Dozens attend golf classic benefiting Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Ohio

and today dozens of people teed off for a good cause at the barington golf club in Aurora the money raised benefits the boys and girls a club of Northeast Ohio so they need the support right now more than ever why here’s Lindsay Bingham all right ladies and gentlemen a few warm-up shots on the putting green then one by one the cart’s headed for the teas for a great cause we are blessed to have our annual Taco Bell gol event uh here at barington and we’ve had it for many many many years 27 to be exact alen Smith is CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Ohio he says the money raised today is crucial especially since the club’s $ million in federal funding wasn’t renewed so these funds go directly into our general operating fund and they go to support paying for staff paying for programs we’ve had a lot of coverage lately about our deficit and these funds will go directly to help us keep clubs open this fall that’s why Pacific Bells president Scott Shepard says he’s proud of his company’s involvement it’s important to us because we employ a little over 4,000 youth uh across our company and they’re certainly a a major part of our business we couldn’t be successful without them the Boys and Girls Club is such a great conduit for us to partner with because they reach out to the kids in need in a way that we would never be able to and provide support for them Jayla Van Horn knows this firsthand so I’ve been going to the boys in Girls Club and I since I was 10 years old so I’ve been there well I’m 22 now so almost a decade it gave her a safe place when her mom was a working single mom she always wanted us to be out and always learning and so one day my friend came to me and was like Hey the Boys and Girls Club is right up the street let’s check it out the wisdom she’s learned is on par with how far she’s come in fact Jayla is our intern at WKYC I always tell people that if it wasn’t for the boys and girls club like I literally wouldn’t be here today I wouldn’t be here talking to you today they’re getting an opportunity to come to the club every day and engage with positive role models they’re getting exposure trips we have a bunch of great staff members and volunteers who really love young people and so there’s a mutual benefit not just for Jayla but also for us well there are a number of ways to support the Boys and Girls Club so if you’d like to help or volunteer just head to wkyc.com for a link christyj I’m so excited to tell you that Jayla is here with us today yay so we’ve had a chance to get to know Jayla she’s an intern here she’s going to be helping us with the ultimate Cleveland sports show on Wednesdays and Fridays coming up soon what did this club mean to you how did it shape the person you are yeah I always tell people it’s like a home to me I literally spent more time there than I did actually at home and my mom will kind of get upset cuz I’m like don’t pick me up I still want to stay um but I always tell people that I literally like I said it’s a home to me it’s the first place where I learn how to hit a volleyball at it’s the first job job I had I had many lifelong friends who are still friends till this day and it’s the first place where I found my passion and wanted to become a sports broadcaster so I I love it there fantastic I know I know she’s tremendous going to the Ohio State University correct the Ohio State University correct get the the in there we got a buckeye in the mid oh thank you so much for sharing your story thank you and thank you all like I said my my time here at WKYC Studios so far I’m only four weeks in but it’s been awesome you all have been awesome we love having love having you here a tremendous Edition she’s going places and great great piece I love that we put a spotlight on the Boys and Girls Club they do such great work and they need all the help they can get absolutely thank you thanks ladies guys all right
