[Music] the 49ers and lions would play a game worthy of Legends Joe Montana and Barry Sanders but in this game a new group of players would establish their own place in NFL lore welcome to Joshua’s football breakdowns where we don’t tell you what you’re seeing we let the film tell us what we’re seeing and what we saw on Sunday was one of the best NFC championship games of all time and a comeback for the ages the Lions would start out with the ball and would look to set the tone early and did they ever they go straight away on the first play of the game to a play we would see several times throughout the night using a wide receiver to block the defensive end in this case Nick Bosa and here it allows to tackle to pull around to be the lead blocker for David Montgomery [Music] Montgomery was college teammates with Brock pie at Iowa State which turned out to produce a lot of NFL players why did the 49ers struggle early defensively in this game Nick Bosa said players were just trying to do too much and we get an example of it early on this play on Detroit’s second play they would call another run and again it would be a play that they would run again and again throughout the night double teaming the tackles right at the point of attack and the way to defend this is for the linebackers to immediately step up and fill those gaps but here Fred Warner sees a man going in motion and he thinks the play is going to that side and he leaves the middle of the field vacant that play works so well Detroit calls it again double teaming the tackles at the point of attack putting a Man in Motion ostensibly for a run to Montgomery but ah check out the tight end Anthony frisker sneaking out for a pass route Ambry Thomas sees him and he goes with him but Jer Brown goes with him too now the 49ers have two Defenders On frisker and nobody on the other tight end rookie Sam leaport and the lions are Marching right down the field and did you notice how that play looked looked so similar to the play before it that was by Design it’s very Shanahan esque in that each play builds off of the previous play for Detroit I got to tell you guys I was really impressed with Ben Johnson’s offense watching this tape and whichever team gets him for a head coach will be in great hands as far as the X’s and O’s are concerned case in point check out this play Detroit puts two men going in motion to their left and you can see Fred Warner and dador Lenor re act setting the 49ers up for the reverse my initial reaction to this play was that JY Brown overran it he is trying to set himself up in the lane but I think ultimately Jameson Williams is just too skilled in the open field it doesn’t help that brown and Ambry Thomas end up running into each other and Dre Greenlaw can’t bring Williams down and the Detroit Lions cap off the drive with a 42 yd touchdown on a reverse oh my goodness well we would be crazy to ignore the fact that Detroit has been building this program for a few years now under Dan Campbell and they take the lead 7 to zero they’re not just here to Crown the 49ers they are here to play and San Francisco would very much like to answer back and almost immediately we would see another surprise from the Lions there’s Aiden h son their star pass rusher and what’s surprising to me about this is he’s lined up against Trent Williams you know ordinarily you wouldn’t line up against the other team’s best pass blocker you would line up on the other side well in this case he goes right at Trent Williams and he’s able to get inside and get his hand up to force an incomplete pass very impressive but of course we know the 49ers also have an array of talented players here Brandon auk has already beaten his man he just gives him a quick move to the inside and then Cuts outside to come open for an early third down conversion in this game skipping ahead one play on second down we would see the Lions do something we saw a lot last week when they harassed Baker Mayfield with a lot of pass rushers not just Aiden Hutchinson and here they get a free runner coming right at Brock pie but py sees he has Debo Samuel open over the middle middle of the field and check out Brock take this hit and deliver the football nice on the play the 49ers would line up with a tight end a fullback and a running back in the formation this looks like a run and Detroit responds with a fiveman line and what’s interesting is they stay in that fiveman line even after Christan mcaffrey motions out of the back field and here we’re going to take a look at the block of Jake brindle but to get a really good look at it we’re going to need to see it from the other side okay there’s Brendle and he’s blocking mcneel and mcneel does a great job of just kind of throwing brindle to the side and getting off this block and coming free right up the middle big hit on Brock pie but Brock still delivers a strike skipping forward a bit more the 49ers are again facing second down and long but here they appear to have Brandon auk wide open on the slant in fact this is probably a touchdown and Brock spots it but turn your attention to the pocket once again we see Aiden Hutchinson working against Trent Williams able to get inside and get his hand up to block this pass what a huge play by Aiden Hutchinson and just watch how fast this happens in real time we’re getting a great look right away at how talented and how how dangerous both of these teams can be so the 49ers would face third and long and the Lions have a lot of men up at the line of scrimmage but watch how fast Rodriguez gets great depth on this play taking away this route of Brandon auk and forcing Brock pie to turn to the checkdown to Christian mcaffrey and then Rodriguez steps forward and makes the tackle on mcaffrey short of the line to gain it’s an extremely impressive chess match early between both teams and the Lions Force the 49ers to settle for a field goal which is no good so Detroit will take take over leading seven to nothing so the Lions move the ball downfield and this time it’s their turn to face a third and long but the chess match would continue it looks like Jer Brown has gone with almond ra St Brown in man coverage in reality he’s actually going to drop back and join Town Gibson in a too high safety look and check out what’s going on up the line of scrimmage we see Fred Warner and Chase young both poised as if they’re going to rush the path in reality the 49ers would rush Dre Greenlaw and drop Fred Warner and Chase young into coverage they’re going to be the ones defending these receivers and this time it’s Fred Warner who gets great depth on the play and that’s the problem because the Lions have come up with the perfect play call for this situation just the perfect play call against this defense the screen to almond ra St Brown they get him the football right right away after the 49er defense has already moved away from him the Lions would follow this up with a run to the Speedy the D dous and The Sensational rookie Gibbs and he appears to go right up the gut and there does appear to be a hole there for a split second desperately Randy Gregory abandons the edge crashing down inside Gibbs uses the opportunity to bounce Detroit would punch it in with Montgomery and take a commanding 14 to zero lead again the 49ers take over really wanting to respond facing a second down and four they again line up in a run formation with two tight ends and a running back in fact you can actually see it’s Kyle yuse cheek who’s lined up in that second tight end position San Francisco fakes the handoff to Christian mcaffrey and the formation and the Run fake is having the desired effect Detroit once again lined up with a fiveman front and the linebackers are reacting to the fake and you may recognize this play as one of the 49ers favorites faking the hand off to one side and sneaking a receiver out to the other side in this case Brandon auk the problem is defenses are also getting really good at recognizing this play and here they defend it well taking away Brandon auk and the checkdown option to Debo Samuel but remember Kyle usechek he was lined up in the tight end position as a blocker for the Run fake but he is technically an eligible receiver on the play and he finds himself downfield use Che moves to space Brock py spots him and gets him the football an outstanding play that results in a gain of 23 yards and if this looked a little bit familiar think back to last year against the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs we can see it’s the same play with the same personel the only difference on this play was this time it was was George KD who found himself running to space huge play in that [Music] game not the last time Brock pie and Kyle usechek would link up for a spectacular play in this game all right we’re in the second quarter now so the teams have switched sides but this is still the same [Music] drive this time Detroit Lines up with a four-man front Debo Samuel goes deep taking the corner and the safety with him so when chrisan mcaffrey comes out of the backfield it will be the responsibility of the outside linebacker to pick him up Alex anzelone but Detroit makes another chess move sending anzelone on a blitz the sort of generic solution to the Blitz is to throw in the area that a team is blitzing from because they’re obviously removing a Defender from that side of the field and that’s exactly what happens here Christian mcaffrey is wide open on the play and Brock p is going to spot that immediately maccaffrey gets past the safety and now he’s doing his thing in the open field a very dangerous player to turn loose like that and look how many people it takes to bring him down in fact at the end of the play he’s not down he’s still [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] standing [Music] [Music] mcaffrey would finish off the drive and in the second quarter the 49ers would finally get on the board making the score Detroit 14 San Francisco 7 and the 49ers would get the ball back but they would still be trailing on the scoreboard so facing a third down and 10 they want to make something happen here they appear to have Debo Samuel coming open for just a second Brock is going to have to Rifle this ball in there but he does spot him and the ball flutters up in the air and it is intercepted by the Detroit Lions ouch let’s see if we can find out what happened and from here we get a great look it’s another Defender getting his hand up but this time instead of just deflecting the pass he makes contact with Brock’s arm and the ball flutters into the waiting arms of Malcolm Rodriguez they have the lead they have momentum and they have possession of the football but backed up by a penalty they would also be facing a second down and 15 but here Detroit also has a plan needing to get to the 36 yd line the Lions send three receivers deep the 49ers have no choice but to back off and this opens up Sam laporta underneath and what I really like about this play is it’s second down even if he doesn’t gain all the yardage now you’ve made it third and manageable and if you’re thinking there should be one more Defender there in the middle of the field you’re 100% right the reason there are fewer defenders in the middle is because the 49ers sent a blitz and leaport is able to to get all the way across for a first down wow why didn’t the blitz get home well a couple of reasons for one thing the Lions left the running back and the tight end to help with pass protection so that’s going to be seven blockers against five rushers Nick Bosa fakes his rush to the outside and then loops around to the inside which is fine but that takes time leaport chips and then heads out on his route and gof is able to get rid of the football B quickly we’ve praised Brock pie on this channel for some gutsy throws in the past and here I think we owe some praise to Jared gof working against Ambry Thomas almond Ross St Brown runs the curl the idea being he’s going to curl away from the coverage of Thomas but you you can see the problem there’s a safety Gyer Brown lurking right there so Goff makes an incredibly gutsy throw throwing this football away from Jer [Music] [Music] Brown [Music] and here the Lions return to the play that we looked at in the opener blocking Nick Bosa with a receiver allowing Gibbs to get around the edge and here I want to draw your attention to chase young Javon kinla and Kevin given who spot Town Gibson in position to make the tackle and they just kind of jog casually over waiting for him to make the tackle well when Gibbs puts a nasty move on Gibson now they’re out of position and Gibbs scores a touchdown on the play this was a really disappointing effort from the defense there I they’re not going to do that in the Super Bowl are [Music] they [Music] so Detroit goes up big 21 to 7 and they would get the ball back with less than 2 minutes to go in the half they are facing a big third down and 12 how does Detroit approach the situation well they have a tight end a wide receiver and a running back to one side of the formation you can see that’s where San Francisco sets up their defense now the 49ers are actually only going to rush four Fred Warner is in man coverage on the tight end and Dre Greenlight is on man coverage on the running back Gibbs now the problems start to go Ary on this play when Chase young does not set the edge instead he crashes down to the inside expecting a pass play probably so when Detroit hands the ball off to Gibbs he’s able to gain the edge the Lions obviously must have been Prett prepared for this look they must have felt like they were going to get this and they had a plan to hand off the football on Third and 12 now the last line of defense Jer Brown has to beat Gibbs to the edge and force him back to the inside instead Brown rushes straight up field which is a mistake and it allows Gibbs to gain the first down on Third and 12 he runs for the first down on Third and 12 ouch on the 49er side of the ball this is a disaster but on the lion side credit goes to the coaches for some excellent planning and preparation you know be being prepared for that look and having a play ready for it later on in the drive they would be facing a third down and 18 surely the 49ers could stop him on Third and 18 right right well here the 49ers go into a Zone not the worst idea on Third and long but the Lions use this as an opportunity to isolate almond raw St Brown against Fred Warner now Fred is an all pro and the best linebacker in football and we’ve seen him with amazing coverage against some of the top players in the NFL but I think in this case asking Fred to stay with Alan ra St Brown was just a little bit too much to ask and St Brown comes open on the play why didn’t the past rush get home on third down and 18 well the Lions double team Nick Bosa and Eric Armstead on the other side of the formation though notice Gibbs does not chip Chase young before going out on a pass route H we’re going to come back to that later moving ahead in the drive the Lions have third and at the six with just 17 seconds to go before the end of the half so the 49ers very shrewdly put seven men in the end zone and you can see there’s really nowhere for Detroit to go with the football however there is an outlet underneath to Gibbs and in terms of play design it’s very difficult to design a play when your opponent knows you have to go into the end zone but this was a nice ring wrink Le would he score unclear but there’s a lot of green grass in front of him and space and for a speedy player like that that can be important however you can see Gibb slips on the turf he catches the football which is impressive but the timing of the play is thrown off and he stopped short so with just 10 seconds left to go in the half and the ball at the three yd line what do you do on fourth down do you go for it or do you kick well even for the ultra aggressive Dan Campbell the solution is obvious you kick why well if you go for it and you score a touchdown great you’re up three scores if you don’t get it you’re only up two scores and the 49ers get the ball to start the second half if if you kick the field goal you’re still up three scores it’s a 17-point lead it’s a very obvious sort of mathematical solution even for an aggressive coach that’s the right move and that’s what Dan Campbell does and the kick is good and Detroit leads by the score of 24-7 a huge huge Advantage going in the halftime and rather famously the 1957 49ers led the Detroit Lions by the same score in the conference Championship game of 57 well things have a way of repeating right those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it so let’s get into the second half where the 49ers would come out [Music] swinging what a throw to Debo into a crowd let’s take a look at how that play works the 49ers once again line up with two tight ends and a running back in the formation again catching Detroit and a fiveman front and sucking in the linebackers the corner on the other side of the formation has to keep his eyes on Brandon auk or auk is a threat to go to the corner and auk is also the only receiver the safety can reasonably help against so he does leaving Debo Samuel one-on-one down below Debo Samuel takes the space of Defense left behind [Music] [Music] later in the drive DEA would motion to the outside and we would see the safety go with them so what’s going on here well the lions are going to send the slot Cor corner on a blitz very sneaky the safety is actually going to line up with auk and the outside corner will line up against Debo the chess moves continue as the Lions also send the linebacker on the Green Dog this means if the running back stays in to help with pass protection which he did you have the green light to dog Brock pie decides he doesn’t want to wait for the bigger play to auk to open up down the field he gets the ball to Debo Samuel immediately but this allows the corner cam Sutton to time his rush to tackle Debo Samuel immediately but if it were that easy to tackle Debo in the open field he wouldn’t be Debo and he’s knocked out just short of the line to gain and this would be significant because they would actually lose a few yards on second down so on third down they would be facing third down and four and this is important needing to get to the 31 Brock pie sees a lane and decides to scramble the only problem is that lane closes up pretty pretty quickly in the NFL but this time one of the Defenders coming up to meet Brock pie is supposed to be defending Joan Jennings leaving him open on the play and at the last second pry spots him and he gets this ball up and over the linebacker and Jennings makes a spectacular onehanded catch oh my goodness on third down in the NFC championship game with the Super Bowl on the line are you kidding me outstanding stuff from Brock pie and Jawan Jennings the drive would lead to a jake Moody field goal which he knocks through reducing the 49er deficit once again to two scores 14 points but the Lions would drive all the way down to the 30 yd line where they would be facing a third and four of their own and they hand the ball off to almond ra St brown but kinlaw is able to get off his block and Fred Warner is able to penetrate before the guard can slide over so now what do you do on fourth down if you’re Detroit well even for the ultra aggressive Campbell the answer is the same right you want to go up three scores with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter you want to make sure you go up three scores in the ball game it does you know good to pick up the first down here you need to take the points they are inside the 30 yd line take the field goal here well this is the first time I thought that Detroit really made a mistake in this game they decide to go for it on fourth down and well let’s see what happens Nick Bosa gets an excellent pass rush and notice Gibbs does not chip Nick Bosa he just goes straight out on his pass route Bosa is unfettered to gof and he moves gof off his spot and gof throws an inaccurate pass wow Reynolds is taking some heat for such a major drop but n that’s a difficult catch going to the opposite side like that so the 49ers take over with a huge opportunity to get right back into this ball game needing only two scores now thanks to Dan Campbell Kyle Shanahan calls for the kill shot when Debo Samuel comes across the middle safety drops down and Brandon auk appears to have a clear path to the post and we can already see Brock prie winding up to throw this football however the corner vildor really showcases his speed here and does a great job of staying on top of Brandon auk very impressive but here vilder bumps auk back and we’ve talked in recent weeks on this channel about how some contact will be allowed if you are a Defender going for the football but that is not it and the flag would come out for pass interference but that doesn’t even matter because check this out you’re not going to believe what you see next the football bounces off of vor’s helmet and Brandon auk catches it on the Ricochet oh my goodness are you kidding me there we see the flag for pass interference and Brandon iuk would be down at the three on a 51 ydd play and this was undeniably the biggest momentum shift of the game to this point now the head referee did say no foul on the play I’m pretty sure the officials misspoke and meant to say San Francisco declines the penalty otherwise they would get the ball at the spot of the foul not down at the four yd line where auk ended up and from this angle we get a great shot of with possession of the football being contacted by the defender he is correctly ruled down at the four instead of into the end zone for a touchdown two plays later auk would give his man a move to the outside and then immediately cut up field and turn your attention to the pocket just look at how comfortable Brock is moving around [Music] [Music] round and now it is a one score [Music] game and Gibbs fumbles the football and the 49ers recover what is happening here and here we get a great look at what happened gof clearly turns to One Direction while Gibbs runs to the wrong side he is a brilliant Dynamic player but he is still just a rookie and he never got a clean grip of this football I’m going to show you in slow motion zoomed in he’s bobbling at the whole way stripped and Eric Armstead recovers to Shan Gibson on the Strip offered another golden opportunity the 49ers would like to capitalize Brock pie takes a quick look to his right doesn’t like what he sees with the pocket collapsing around him he decides to scramble pulls it down goes right up the middle Cuts gets a block and then hangs on to the football at the end going down at the 4 yd line 21 yd gain on the play right Christian mcaffrey would punch it in and just like that we are all tied up all season long we’ve looked at how quickly the 49ers can score the lions got a taste of it here and the 49ers would get the ball back and just watch Christian mcaffrey come all the way across the formation on a difficult Blitz pickup and he whiffs we’ve done a breakdown of every single game on this channel since Christian mcaffrey was traded to the 49ers and that is the first time I’ve ever seen him miss a block in past protection it turns out CMC may be Human After All but it does mean that Brock p is now a Sitting Duck a fitto mifan Wu has a clear shot at him whoop Rock py scrambles and finds Kyle use Che Tippy Toe catch first down wow the corner Blitz was another chess move but in this case it was a Gambit Debo Samuel is going to be turned loose down the field and the linebacker Rodriguez will pick him up now obviously that pass coverage is not going to hold up for long so the blitz must get home which it appeared to initially but what about the other part of the play Kyle yuse cheek how did he get so wide open take a look at cam Sutton he’s keeping his eyes on Debo Samuel across the field he never saw Kyle use coming one of the best plays I’ve seen this season this game has rapidly progressed into the fourth quarter with the 49ers in a rhythm on this play the Lions decide to just leave mopon wo in pass coverage and he sets up to the outside George K goes to the inside and when mopon wo scrambles to recover KD Burns him with a double move and it’s another 28 yd chunk for the 49ers what do you need to throw the ball deep time and Jake brindle is hanging on for dear life but he does enough to allow Brock pie to drop this one in the [Music] [Music] bucket [Music] perie kills the Lions again with his legs the ners fake the handoff to Christian mcaffrey pie takes a look at Debo Samuel but he’s double covered so he takes a look at Brandon auk and when he does the safety moves auk is going to be double covered too by the same man and this is because the 49ers only ran a Twan route something that happens when you fake the hand off sometimes with nobody to throw the ball to Brock pie takes a sack and maybe I’m crazy but I don’t hate the sack here protect the football at all costs the most important thing here is points including a field goal take the lead in the game and on the next play James Houston would deliver an extremely dirty and dangerous hit on Brock Pie when the officials apparently didn’t see so the 49ers bring out Jake Moody again and he knocks it through another clutch kick giving the 49ers the lead in the NFC Championship Game the Lions now trailing for the first time in the game would go on a drive but here they would face a key third down and 10 and now it’s the 49ers who make a chess move only rushing three dropping Chase young into coverage Fred Warner up at the line of scrimmage would also drop back and the 49ers do send Dre Greenlaw so it is a four-man Rush on the play is it three or is it four and that’s exactly the point the Lions have no idea who’s coming or who’s going with the 49ers dropping three safeties back deep and Fred Warner taking taking anything away over the middle Goff is forced to go to almond Raw on the sideline and the 49ers Rally For The Tackle this brings up a fourth down in three once again Dan Campbell decides to gamble a bad decision you don’t take a risk like this when you’re losing the game as far as the play itself is concerned Dre green law would go with Gibbs revealing man coverage Detroit uses this to their advantage when green law goes with Gibbs leaport will come across the The Other Side open but green law isn’t going with Gibbs he’s staying right there all right what about Gibbs could gof get Gibbs the football no Logan Ryan is staying on the other side the Niners aren’t in man coverage they’re in a Zone and this was a sick defensive call by Steve wils gof is forced to throw up a desperation pass down the field and it is incomplete turnover on Downs if you consider a turnover on Downs to be the same thing as a turnover and I do that would be three turnovers in the game by the lions in concert with the pass coverage on the back end the 49ers also did something tricky with their defensive line they didn’t rush forward instead instead Javon kinla rushed at an angle allowing Eric Armstead to loop around unblocked and this was the pressure that ultimately forced goff’s hand with just over 7 and 1/2 minutes left in the game the goal for the 49ers now is simple run the ball take time off the clock convert third downs and score they give the ball to Caffrey and the clock runs the Lions cannot allow this in desperation they sell out to stop the run leaving Debo Samuel one-on-one and here Debo scorches cam Sutton and from this angle we get a great look at the defense selling out to stop the run and notice the effort Debo makes at the end of the play to stay in bounds keeping the clock moving if you want to run the football you have to be able to convert third downs but here all the receivers for the 49ers are covered needing to get to the 45 yd line once again Brock pie does it with his legs oneon-one with the linebacker forget it outrun the safety no [Music] problem [Music] and on the very next play Christian mcaffrey puts the Lions on life support Romeo quara does get off of his block but he’s completely lost his balance and it’s a trivial matter for Christian mcaffrey to go by him forearm down inbound so the clock continues to run but then he lands awkwardly on his head and he would get a stinger and have to come out of the game [Music] but it’s no problem Elijah Mitchell would punch it in putting the 49ers up by 10 with just over 3 minutes remaining punching their ticket to the Super Bowl it was a textbook drive on offense and here we would see a textbook demonstration on defense taking away anything deep and allowing these completions underneath which as we know keep the clock running the 49ers would force the Lions to nickel and dime their way down the entire field setting up a third and goal at the one with just over 1 minute 5 seconds remaining and here’s the Dilemma for Detroit the easiest way to get into the end zone is to run the ball but you cannot run it and get stopped in Bound because time is such a critical factor and you need all your timeouts you’re down two scores they try it anyway and it’s the final error of the night take a close look they are forced to use one of their timeouts meaning mathematically they can no longer Stop San Francisco from running out the clock if they give possession of the ball to the 49ers making this play moot why is it moot because this success rate for onside kicks is drastically low the Lions touch the ball before it travels 10 yards that’s a penalty and possession of the football is awarded to San Francisco the 49ers win the NFC Championship Game and they are going to Super Bowl 58 for a rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick momes what a game this was what a comeback by Brock per and the 49ers they have so much talent at every position you know I truly believed they were the better team against Kansas City four years ago they entered the game with a better offense by yardage and in terms of points and the same applied to the defense as well if you don’t believe me go look it up you might be surprised they had the lead in that game until late and well then some strange things happened a lot of debate depending on on who you ask but the 49ers are going to get the rarest of things in life a second opportunity and to be frank I just don’t see Kyle Shanahan dropping two to Andy Reid I think the 49ers are going to win the Super Bowl in two weeks and it comes on
