been throwing back mcaer comes in motion they fake the jet to him P he throws it hot and thr throws his receiver incomplete you got to put up touchdowns off field he will run for a first down and more all the way inside the 15 yd line play action fake right side throw touchdown another heartbreaking loss for Kyle [Applause] Shanahan oh San Francisco is tired of running into that Kansas City buz saw aren’t they welcome to NFL live everybody we got a lot to get to today field Yates is here with me Herm Edward Adam shefer for the hour and as you might guess based on the way we started the show we’re going to begin with some 49ers in some news around them they they have a receiver dilemma okay and what I mean by that is Brandon iuk wants a new deal he isn’t at Camp so as auk holds out you wonder if there’s a way to pay everyone dvo Samuel’s deal is up in 2025 auk added some fuel to the contract negotiation fire he said this to his former Arizona State teammate Jaden Daniels he got me vlogging this bro what what happened they said they they said they don’t want me [Applause] back okay if you’re trying to decipher that was like a FaceTime call with Jaden Daniels that was recorded but either way he’s saying they said they didn’t want him back here’s a look at the Niner skill players even if something happens with auk they still have a lot of great Playmakers and dvo Samuel Christian mcaffrey and George KD they also added white outs Ricky peera and Jacob cowing in the draft this year but Adam let’s go right to you what more can you tell us about the contract talks between Brandon iuk and San Francisco well Laur unless the 49ers stance has changed suddenly dramatically and unexpectedly that statement would be completely false because having spoken to the Niners multiple times multiple Niners people throughout the course of the offseason every single one of them said they wanted Brandon IU back it was a priority I think what Brandon iuk is saying here is that their contract offer says to me that they don’t want me back because the wide receiver Market has exploded recently we’ve seen Justin Jefferson com in $35 million a year we’ve seen uh AJ Brown come in north of $30 million a year we’ve seen jayen Wadd come in $28 million a year we’ve seen big guaranteed money and the Niners and Brandon iuk have been un able to reach a long-term contract agreement and while they’ve had these talks the prices of wide receivers only has risen to the point where it doesn’t seem like there’s been recent contract talks because talks have been at a stalemate so when Brandon iuk says they don’t want me there that’s just not true they absolutely do want him there they just don’t want them there at the price that he’s looking for right now is the two sides try to reach a common ground on a long-term deal yeah chefy’s on the mark there in terms of finding that spot for Brandon auk in this very complicated and robust and Rich wide receiver Market Laura but the other problem that San Francisco 49ers are facing right now is a great problem to have youve got all this worldclass Talent as of right now the 49ers have seven players who are making at least $15 million per season that’s tied for the most of any team in the entire NFL when you’re really good you got to make difficult business decisions and oh by the way next year assuming Brock py plays like he has so far he’s going to be making more than $55 million per season at some point these difficult choices arise for the teams at the very top of the Heap of the NFL I don’t love to always sit here and compare teams to the Kansas City Chiefs but we’re just a couple of offseasons removed from them trading away Tyreek Hill a first team All Pro wide receiver so for San Francisco it’s not simply Brandon iuk it’s the idea that every dollar they pay to one player is one less dollar to pay to somebody else it’s a puzzle they’re currently na well and as we backtrack just a little bit back to the NFL draft it was a signal of sorts that the 49ers drafted Ricky peaw out of Florida and and when you think about that it’s just because they’re adding wide receiver Talent at a pretty high spot and that makes them think that maybe they’re going to miss out on somebody else so Herm you have coached both Brandon iuk and Ricky Piera you’re an expert in these guys okay what would you say the difference is between those two players well Brandon is very explosive receiver uh down the field uh when you look at his yards per catch about 18 uh he led the team in receptions as well as yards after catch but U Ricky piols is a guy that really you can move around he’s like um a Cooper cup you can move him into slot excellent blocker and if you know you play for Coach Shanahan he wants his wide receivers to block so you know Ricky has all the tools he’s not as explosive as Brandon but he’s a really good football player can make plays um and move him around he’s like a chess piece you can move him inside outside uh and it it’s a hard decision for 49ers and both both parties have said it you know they want Brandon iuk back there is no doubt about that he’s a part of this offense but how do you pay all these guys and you had a list you had the screen of all the Fantastic players the 49ers have that’s the problem when you draft right um you’re going to have some good players that you can’t keep yeah it’s like field said it’s a it’s a good problem to have I I think something that I did point out a couple minutes ago that is worth remembering is dvo Samuel signed that extension in 2022 that is up in 2025 so that could maybe factor in in the way they handle this guys we didn’t have a show when Trevor Lawrence got his new deal done at the end of last week so we didn’t get to talk about it yet we want to talk about it now congratulations as you see the numbers right there to Trevor but let’s dive into some more numbers okay Trevor Lawrence posted eily similar numbers in 2023 as he did in 2022 his total qbr the same down to the decimal that that’s almost unbelievable he ranked 17th in both seasons his completion percentage was also the same and his yards per attempt were oneth off one thing that wasn’t the same his touchdown to interception ratio was much worse in 2023 than it was in 2022 Adam big payday for Lawrence and what more can you tell us about the situation for the quarterback there in Jacksonville well Laura the Jacksonville Jaguars made no secret of the fact that their goal this off season was to tie down Trevor Lawrence in a long-term contract extension and Doug Peterson said at one point in time it will get done period and in fact it did the sides have been talking in recent weeks and we’ve seen other quarterback deals get done to the point where right now this deal was able to come in at $55 million a year tying him with Joe burrow for the richest contract in NFL history and of course those deals will be passed at some point in time here maybe relatively soon but for the time being Trevor Lawrence the Jag decided to move ahead Jacksonville identified Lawrence former number one overall pick is somebody they wanted to move ahead with and I think they’re banking on getting more of the Trevor Lawrence that they got two years ago than the one they got last year they’re banking on upside growth potential all the things that they see which is why they paid him so much money but this deal got done last week he’s tied to this team for years to come and they’re going to build this franchise around Trevor Lawrence yeah Adam you kind of hint hinted at it there if you’re thinking about the money going around you still got Jordan love out there you got Dak Prescott there’s going to be more money handed out to these quarterbacks but field how do you feel about the state of the Jaguars knowing that Lawrence is now locked up with his new deal yeah Laura you and I talked about the Jaguars before the deal last week and I kind of talked about like the adjustment of playing better you were in London last year when the Jaguars beat the Buffalo Bills that team eventually improved to 8 and3 a top of the AFC and then they turned into a pumpkin for the second half of last regular season I’m not concerned about the Jacksonville Jaguars having the pieces to be successful as far as the state of the Jaguars relative to the rest of the AFC South that’s where my mind has shifted relative to where we were a year ago optimism was not high around the AFC South in a couple of different situations specifically Houston we thought might be at the beginning of a potential rebuild with CJ stra will Levis and the Houston Texans were kind of excuse me in the Tennesse Titans we kind of at this Crossroads where we going to be is Will going to take over for Ryan tanah Hill sooner than later look at things right now though in that division CJ just finished off one of me maybe the best if not one of the five best rookie quarterback seasons ever that team looks like they are a freight train right now Anthony Richardson a gator has all kinds of potential for this incredibly well- coached Indianapolis Colts team and the Titans spent big all off season making themselves a more formidable foe so while Jacksonville has the pieces in place the competition around them a whole lot stiffer it’s not a guarantee they run away with this division which we thought could be the case regularly just a couple of years ago yeah Fields brings makes a great Point um we said this during the draft this was going to be a division that had a bunch of young quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence happens to be the old guy but you but you mentioned the other three young rookie quarterbacks that have great potential Trevor Lawrence has great potential his problem is at times you know he’s injured he got injured last year this hurt this team uh you know they only won what they lost five out of six down the stretch and had a total collapse Houston ran away with the division now Trevor Lawrence is getting paid the money he’s worth I get it he’s a big time quarterback but he’s got to show up now he’s got to stay healthy this team has to get in the playoffs but they’re going to there’s a fight in this division who’s going to win this Division and right now if you look at it on paper Houston might be the most exciting team in the division I mean I think that’s well said and probably very true either way the Jaguars have been so close it feels like these last couple years they want to make sure they locked up the quarterback they’ve done that and now we’ll see what they’re capable of going forward we’re just getting started here on NFL live a lot more to come the pressure heating up in Dallas with Dak Prescott entering the final year of his is is for oh is
