Tre Spann is a former college football player and entering his 3rd year of playing golf. Tre is really strong and possesses a lot of club head speed. Tre is a beginner that has a round or two in the 70’s. In this video, I discuss how I think amateur and recreational players can learn. Using Brooks Keopka as a swing model, I note the similarities that Tre has to Brooks. I then take a brief look at Brooks’ TRACKMAN numbers and swing analysis. I look at some of Tre’s swing flaws and offer some practice drills for Tre to work. Tre has already been working behind the scenes to fix his early extension problem. I will do follow up videos with Tre on the range in the near future!
the thing that’s probably impressed me most about Trey’s golf swing is the incredible amount of power that he’s had from day one his first swing on the radar with a driver was 122 miles an hour and for somebody that new to the game to possess that much Club head speed to me was was simply incredible I believe that the fastest way to helping a recreational amateur player play better and learn faster is to match them up with a model find a tour player that you share the same characteristics with may not be exactly the same but things that you have in common when I look at Trey swing that player that he has a lot of similar characteristics to is Brooks Kea we can see in Brook swing when he takes the club back he keeps that club head outside the hands and the first part of the takeaway tray uh very similar to that as they go to the top of the back swing what you can see is Brooks he gets his lead arm really steep I mean it’s well above the shoulder Trey as his swing goes back he’s in a similar position now when we put those swings side by side there are some places where Trey is off compared to Brook so my first goal and the easy eest thing I think to do for Trey is let’s get into some of those positions that Brooks is in and see how that changes our ball striking [Music] n [Music] [Music] we have some of Brooks’s swing data from the trackman website we’re going to go through the data and as I look at data what I’m really looking for are Clues that’s going to give me some insight when I look at the swing video of a player now the first thing we can see about Brooks’s swing is that his club path is 1.7 de to the left so that means that he is swinging the club out to in face to path the club faces 1 and2 de closed to the path the spin axis is 1.1 de to the left now the spin axis is the first clue that he didn’t hit the ball on the center of the face because if this strike would have been on the center of the face what you can expect to see is about 6° of spin axis for every degree of difference between the face and the path so here if we multiply 1 and 1/2 time 6 we should see something here on the spin axis approximately around 9° of left spin axis Brooks is hitting down on the ball with the driver has a spin Loft to 14.7 De and a spin rate of 2600 almost 2700 RPMs of Back Spin well the first thing we can see is Brooks is set up just a little bit open to the Target line Brooks takes the club back we noted earlier in the video he keeps the club head outside of the hands we can see that right arm start to fold here left arm parallel the clubs not quite 90° to the ground so one thing I want Trey to do in his swing when we look at it is when this left arm is parallel to the ground we want to see the angle between the Sha of the club and that lead arm at 90° starting down here’s what you really want to pay attention to you see how the left hip moves back the right hip never moves closer to the golf ball as he starts down it’s not a spin out it’s not a Twist it’s not a thrusting of the hip it’s just simply the left hip socket moving back in line with the right hip socket getting everything back Square to the Target line [Music] the first thing I’m going to point out is that our stance is close to our Target line when we talk about getting the hip back if you’re close to the Target line that left hip socket’s already closer to the Target line than the trail hip socket so how is the the left hip socket ever going Want to Get Back Square it can’t we can see that the club head initially Works outside the ball so we need to do a little bit of work on your takeaway once we get the stance fixed we need to take the club away to where it’s not getting outside of the golf ball going up to the top now one thing in Brooks’s swing is when we get to the top of the back swing you can see in Brooks’s swing that the club is to the left of your hands your Club gets to the right of your hands right here if you just stopped right there you would already be playing better golf now here’s the issue that you contacted me about and that is the early extension playing good golf is about giving yourself the best opportunity every time you set up to a golf shot and Trey with the early extension that you have going on I’m going to say that a closed stance is not going to give you your best opportunity so set your an alignment rod on the ground and when you take your stance put your feet your toes equal distance from that alignment Rod go ahead and get set up here and start making some 3/4 swings some half swings to get back what it feels like to have your hips neutral and square to your target line now from there what you need to do is work on not letting the club go back and Away outside of the golf ball get set up where your you feel like your thumbnails are underneath your chin that’s going to get the arms out away from me a little bit and that’s going to give me some room to swing the club then the second thing we’re going to do to help us with this takeaway is we’re going to take our alignment Rod again we’re going to take our Trail foot and put in front of the alignment Rod L uh Lead Foot behind the alignment rod and then just take this golf club put it right here in your belly button just take your stance with your hands underneath your chin again and then just practice this little takeaway and as you get a feel for this right here tray it’s going to help you Groove a one piece takeaway you can feel everything move away together the last thing you’re going to do to give yourself the best opportunity to making a good strike on the golf ball is when you get to the top of the back swing that what I want you to get the feeling for is get this hip back so get the hip back get the weight back here on the heel and as you do that the hand should come down so as you get this little motion right here then you can turn explode into the golf ball and then just set up keep in mind the cues that we just went through just make a 3/4 swing with about 70% of your effort [Music] [Music] if you enjoyed this video I would be honored if you would consider subscribing to the channel to help support what I’m doing here on YouTube we’ve got follow-up lessons with Trey that we’re recording those videos will be coming out in the very near future so the only way you’re going to know about those videos is click that notification Bell and we also have some content we’re working with with other golfers
