I think this morning Sam we should raise a glass to your Chum Trevor Burch at the efl I mean in spite of your protestations I think it’s time to accept the positives of what Hollywood owners can bring to football the efl has managed a 40% rise in overseas broadcasting rights and it’s eyeing up cracking America and your friends at rexam Ryan Reynolds and Rob Michel heny and look at your face you don’t like to compliment them and you won’t but rexam claim they now have the biggest International following of any efl club beating the likes of Le United and Leicester city that’s where we’re at they probably do I mean they probably do because of the nature of the association with with a major movie star um and let’s see how that plays out and let’s see how it plays out if they manag to get promoted out of League 2 this season into League one where the costs go up and everything goes up exponentially let’s see how much appetite they’ve got because we know this is a project that’s ostensibly being funded by an underpinning TV deal uh and when it becomes that TV do only go so far and you’ve got to write out proper checks with due respect to the scale of wealth they’ve got we’ll see how much ambition and how much enthusiasm they got for it right now what they’ve done is they’ve turned an aien uh Welsh football club into something that people are talking about well done to them I have every respect for that but I don’t want to go overboard attributing far too much to them than they necessarily Merit they’ve got huge interest because a lot of people look at Ryan Reynolds the other fell you know he carries his bag but but Ryan Reynolds is the audience true kind of true isn’t it Tom Tom Brady’s going into Birmingham city as well and I met some of their guys last week and they’re really happy about that because it gives them profile fantastic but profile carries you so far in the end you got to know what you’re doing and you got have the propensity to put your hand in your pockets and so far what we’ve seen from Tom Brady’s little crew is bring Wayne Rooney in and put Birmingham in the bottom five of the championship but profile Simon whether we like it or not has got a big deal to do with a 40% rise in overseas broadcasting rights maybe maybe I maybe maybe we can attribute some of that factor into the equation I mean ultimately they’re not going to be buying TV writes for English football because Netflix have done something on a documentary that sub subsequently makes sense and you’ve got a movie star attached to a film uh to a football club I think you’ve got to attribute a lot of that to the remarkable nature of the attendances inside the championship the value of the clubs that are inside that Championship like Leeds United and other clubs that are in there they’ve got Heritage yeah and the fact you’ve got two boys at the top of the efl in Rick Perry and Trevor bur they know what they’re doing well exactly exactly um the adviser to the board at rexim is Sean Harvey who of course was once the top man at the efl but he’s been talking about the merits of this us broadcast deal the league concluded a deal yesterday to sell its own overseas TV rights for the next for the next four years and and effectively was recognized that um you know the previous way of selling these rights wasn’t going to generate the maximum value so effectively they split the rights and sold them individually into America and you know that’s that’s the story of the day you know the the efl giving its clubs a platform to try and to try and win hearts and mindes in the USA I mean it’s down now to the efl I suppose Simon to show us that they’ve got the reach they have the appeal they have the drive the enthusiasm to get from there where they’ve got to now good luck to them to there well I think in I think you know for once including the fellow that just spoke we’ve got some competent running of the efl in terms of uh Rick Perry and Trevor bir you know previously none of them including sha Harvey have been particularly good at what they’ve done and so now you’ve got people inside the efl that commercially know what they’re doing and you’ve got to this order that’s being maintained in the efl Rick parry and Trevor bur have got a real opportunity to get the Premier League to come to heal around some proper distribution lovely you get an oversiz overseas deals lovely another 150 million grid on top of the sky deal that’s been increased to whatever it was £10 million pound a season they’ve done two deals that have you know exponentially grown it the next Frontier is they can get some proper money out of the Premier League in advance of the independent regulator um so and the efl’s got to hold together because I know this league and I know that there’ll be clubs sitting in the in the efl now going oh don’t ever play your hand Rick don’t ever play your hand take what’s on offer from the Premier League now is the time you’re never going to get an opportunity again you’ve never had an opportunity in the last 30 years to get a deal with a premier league and to get them to come to heal because of the threat of independent regulator so one thing is getting overseas deals 150 million quid over four years or whatever it is another thing is getting the sky deal for 180 million pound season there is an opportunity to get near to 20% of UK distributions which is 700 million and that’s where they need to hold their nerve and that’s where the opportunity for the efl but it’s a brilliant I mean a brilliant brilliant league and look at the teams in it look at the fact it’s probably the fourth the best supported league in European football as our second tier of English football look at the competitivity in it look at the Jeopardy in this league and look at the guys that are running it now and that’s where the value is and even if the distribution does get agreed and it’s much better and healthy and everyone’s happy is there going to be any changes in the way that’s governed because all absolutely otherwise it’s worthless that’s what I just going to they they they will have to bring in a variety of things and I think salary cap should be right at the top of the que what should their next priority be Simon get the money out of the Premier League and underpin it with governance like salary caps yeah yeah yeah based on turnover and also look at their own distribution mechanisms because it’s ironic ironic ironic that we complain about the Premier League and its distributions whereas currently what happens in the efl is 80% goes to one League 12% goes to League one and 8% goes to League two so you’ve got this Cliff Edge in each division We complain about the cliff Edge dropping out of the Premier League you’ve got Cliff Edge dropping the championship so a lot of things but these boys have got the capability to do it morning talk sport that must be us and no naming this I’m not a reom fan but I think Simon is underestimating Ryan Reynolds he’s not just a Hollywood star he’s actually a keen investor and he’s a smart businessman look up his history and his Investments he can fund rexam to go all the way to the Premier Well we see won’t we yes of course we know that he’s invested in some very significant alcohol companies made a lot of money out of those businesses yeah I don’t doubt it if you attach your name to something and you’re in a position of great influence it’s often easy to make money isn’t it yeah yeah true we’ll see the appetite don’t know I mean without them Rex and man united preseason in San Diego probably wouldn’t have happened last year of course not and absolutely and and I I don’t I do not decry the impact and the effect that they’re having on their on their football club my my question is when it gets expensive and I mean really expensive right because this time last year we were hearing them say if we didn’t get promoted it was exential because we that million quid would have cost if we didn’t get promoted was an existential threat well make your mind up even you’ve got loads of money and you’re a keen investor or a million quid is a big sum of money ultimately if you’re going to get to the championship and you’re going to compete you’re going to be spending tens of millions of pounds sure but you do accept though that the 40% rise in overseas broadcasting rights in the efl a lot of it has got to do with people like these two coming into the game well it’s not Cas of accepting it because I’m not resisting the notion I’m not I’m not on the other side of the argument I’m just them I’m not but no no interest in them either which way I’m just not attributing more to them than is necessary because by attributing the success of something to them you’re diminishing the achievements of other people they are part of the process of course the awareness Factor would have gone up fivefold but the championship wouldn’t be a secret it’s also not huge amounts of money so with the greatest respects in the world the championship is the reason why the uh efl is being rewarded with this deal not because Ryan re running around Ding A Deadpool mask at rexam but it they have raised the global appeal you can’t deny that it depends I mean we might see we talk about a 39th game will we see a championship match played in the US sometime soon for what purpose and to what end and for what reason to service the audience that’s obviously out well the audience is servic for the broadcasting deals well I don’t I never understood this argument why we need to hwk our mutton over to another part of the world to prostitute ourselves to make us look like we need their particular products when we got the whole nature of the deal is a broadcast deal they’ve got the vision let’s have some more money from broadcast deals so I I’m not denying in any shape or form the value of Ryan reynolds’s contribution to reom and the fact that it will will have had an uptick in the US because of the fact you’ve got a major movie star that’s got tens of millions of followers having some eyes on the priz when he shuffles off back to the you know polishing his Hollywood star and no longer interested in Rex and we’ll see how long that interest stays with I there there’s run Simon sounds jealous of these guys Jim doesn’t he um who’s not je jealous of a major Hollywood movie star that looks like he does you got to have an element of jealousy you en EnV is a better word uh there’s who’s got in touch Jim Jim Simon um portsman of course owned by one member of the Walt Disney Family well somebody that used to work for uh the Disney corporation uh who was it Michael E Michael Michael Eisner but you never speak about them because you know in your eyes they’re a Mickey Mouse team do you like that I have to say Well done Gary hey Jim no wonder you get all these Good Charity gigs up in Scotland thank you thank you very much indeed there’s another one I believe Ryan Reynolds is around the billionaire Mark due to his business dealings and his companies that he owns so I mean Fant peanuts but he was the one you don’t like us praising him because of his business I admire achievements I’m not like the British people that like to bring people down I like to praise people for what they actually do rather than give them give them more credit than they’re entitled to but the reasons why I talk the million pounds is he’s the one that said it he’s the one that said if we didn’t get promoted this was exential to us a million quid would have been lost and we’d have been in real trouble well make your mind up even your a billionaire or you’re not briefly how far can the efl go though over in the United States uh um how far can it go how far does it need to go well they a big identity now they didn’t have before well they can’t mean everybody everybody wants the Premier League so if the efl was really polishing itself I used to have this conversation about the Premier League being all bells and whistles and the and the championship being an old geizer with a rattle as part of their advertising so if they’re going to up their game and promote themselves in the right fashion they give themselves lots of opportunities but they will always be second fiddle to the Premier League yeah the and the efl let’s be honest it’s it’s it’s Ryan Reynolds is the one that’s created the spike of interest there and Rex them it’s not really the efl as a package they’ve got people over there who love watching AFL yes but that that’s not that’s only been enhanced because of one owner and one club and the and the Netflix series I don’t think people over there are going oh we really love the efl now oh helps value it helps it helps because you you’ll gain interest but only so much it can only go so far it’s not necessarily the interest of the punter it’s the broadcasters the broadcasters eyes have been opened up a little bit so they can see the value of it so of course it plays its part I’m just pushing back up against the categorization that you want to put on it that the only reason they’ve done this deal is because of Deadpool look you’ve already admitted you’re jealous of him and and we agree so let’s move en yeah I mean I must admit at the time when they came in we thought what are they doing here Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mel heny but now the spin-off for others Simon has been it’s it has been quite seism in in a relatively short space of time I mean we knew what they were doing here because they ultimately they underpinned their proposition and wonderful for rexen by the way yeah um underpin their proposition by a commercial broadcast deal and that’s great and because sport is entertainment I fully understand the reality of it but we have seen football people with significant wealth um attached themselves to football clubs like sford and we know that there was a massive discon between what it takes to get yourself into a position where you’re a proper football club competing in the championship as opposed to smaller football clubs that still have value and still have cost implications but there are two different distinctions and if we’re going to make all this brewhaha about these guys let’s have a look at it through a proper prism rather than just a how wonderful it’s a Hollywood movie star that’s turned the efl into something viable I don’t like that characterization down for a movie role is this why were you meant you being moving we would have seen you and didn’t get the I think it’s admirable the um the amount of energy and effort they have put in yes I didn’t expect that you know they’re they’re there a lot the journey they’ve been on you know integrating themselves a lot with the local community and the fans and stuff they could have been more distant and good luck to them yeah yeah and I think it’s great there’s nothing wrong with it I’m just saying you diminish the efl would have gone and got this deal one way or other it’s been helped and enhance in every aspect of something increases the recognition is good when you’re sitting there as a tub Thumper you know we see you disappear up David Sullivan’s backside you’re off with the sa’s Left Right Center and now all of a sudden you have the post the boy for Rex do you think do you think they would have got a 40% rise in overseas broadcasting rights without them um that says it all Poss now then um Andy Nottingham sure hi guys I’m a reom fan I agree and disagree with simonk yeah the value of Robin Ryan is immense and they’re in it for the long haul but also the value of teams like Leeds and IP and Lester also will play a huge part in all of this a balanced argument ryan reynolds was not making it say that the million was going to harm the club as they could afford it but they wanted to get the club to be self sufficient and it was costing a million pounds a season more than the club was making at that time which was a threat to the club being self sufficient
Have Ryan Reynolds or Rob on the show. No need to speculate.
With hi hindsight 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Simon Jordan, your so so wrong about all this, Ryan is making UK football become a sport to follow and watch in America, hes a clevery boy don't underestimate him as just a hollywood actor with a name. Rememeber this comment, he will take Wrexham to the premier League 100% He won't even have to use his own wealth, Why do you think he's invested in a Formular 1 team, the mans aligning himself in circles of Multi Billionares. Anyway your stupid views are for the show so i get it, gets us commenting like i just have. Ps I'm friends with people who know him
Who's Simon Jordan and what has he done to the rest of the 72 other teams? He has been there much, much longer than the Ryan and Rob. He could have invited other international celebrities' and millionaires. Or put out other models that would race the international or national awareness of people to these 72 teams. Many of which are in bad need of financial support. And here comes 2 helping the best the could, considering their cash is not limitless – and all Jordan does is trash the 'new comers". SMH!
Simon is a mupet. He have no clue what he is talking about. Get someone who actually bring some knowledge and have some experience.
Leeds sell the 17th most football shirts in the World after spending over 20 years outside the top flight. Wrexham do not have a bigger global following than Leeds United. Come off it.
Simon Jordan has no idea about the connections that both Ryan Reynolds & Rob Mcelhenney have. For sure they will have business access to dozens of Billionaires who would invest for entertainment / the challenge / association & friendship with A-List Hollywood stars / business potential.
The business network that Wrexham have / are building up will mean they will generate more revenue than most Championship teams next season & when they are in the Championship, they will generate more revenue than all but 6-7 Premier league teams.
If / when they get to the Premier league, they will sky-rocket to one of the most profitable clubs in the world bar 5-6.
Come on guys, just enjoy the Wrexham ride, its good to see a well run club using today’s added social media presence can prosper and climb the leagues, its a good watch and Wrexham are fast becoming every kids second team ( plus us Dads)
I agree with Simon–if i could just watch EFL on my tv i would be good. From PA USA
Gave up on the PL.
How many views do you think this video would have if it didn’t have Wrexham in the title? It’s not just the football club that’s getting an international bump because of what Rob and Ryan have done in Wrexham. And on the other point, they’ve always said that outside investment will be necessary when the team gets promoted to the Championship. The whole “not getting promoted will ruin the club” line in the documentary was a bit of Hollywood there to up the tension in the storyline. Those of us that follow the club and its financials know the how things are looking.
In my humbel opinion (responding to this from Nairobi, Kenya) that is FACT globally personally I couldnt care less what is going on at EFL I will just search who got promtted at the end of the seasonn Wrexham on the other hand I try to watch all the post match highghlights there is no point arguing this just run the data i sure the answer will be clear lol…..And that comment about Rob is down right disrespectful I personally never heard of this guy or this show only reason im here is cause the name Wrexham is on the tag line he should be more repectfull
globally, if we being realistically, they probly are, new viewers join the internet every day, and they will see wrexham before they even know leeds and leicester are a club. they just have a much bigger platform to carry their club then the "traditional" clubs.
One can question Ryan's understanding of football but no one can question the Marketing Savant; Ryan can practically "own" the definition of what Global reach means.
I apologize to my British friends here for not knowing who this dude is, but does he not understand how a business works? Rob and Ryan can not run a business like an endless printing press; that is unsustainable. It has to function as a business that creates its own capital and performs as its own entity, so thinking he made a lot of money selling his phone company and liquor business means he is just going to divest himself of that isn't logical.
So, getting to the next promotion provides a new entry of capital to the club, which allows them to say, let's invest more money into the club. Does this guy understand that the reach outside of Wales and the rest of the UK is the only way they will have that capital to compete later on if and when they move up? This gentleman is near-sighted in his analysis of how these things work. Forgive me if I am missing the market as to how things work in this format, but
The reason why he said a million quid was a threat was because they are trying to make the club be self-sustaining, it was job one in their mission statement.
Hugely disrespectful to Mac – the whole thing was HIS idea
Be interesting to see what Simon Jordan has to say at the end of the 2024/2025 season.
Would have thought man u was the biggest internationally but im Wrexham all the way and from Australia and i dont even really like soccer "up the town"
Clubs all over the world are coming up with new ideas to bring more revenue in especially with financial fair play rich owners are no longer the advantage they once were previously with Chelsea and man city although they help still its not an open chequebook like before they have to bring in revenue, and if you own a club and don't take advantage of your fame to get deals your a fool.
Ryan is right
It’s a shame the government over there throws money away with political circle jerk agendas instead of helping the economy (the kop) but that’s an everywhere problem. They just did terrible with optics.
What I’d say to quell the strong feelings is that those Americans who are now introduced to the EFL system should go one further and find a team you actually like, for one – most Americans have English ancestry of some kind and you could absolutely find a team based on that. There’s a million ways to get addicted to a team’s story and most teams lores are variations on ‘glittering heights in the past now hoping for a rise back up’. Take my team, Ipswich Town FC, 22 years out of the prem and now, at last, with back to back promotions we are BACK! That’s a story for the ages and one that I see many people getting behind. I study in Ireland and plenty of people in my class are now moving into casual fandom of ITFC because I’m passionate about them. Pick a team with an ethos, or a story or even just a colour that you like, and go all in. It’ll feel better and will be better for the EFL if the love is spread rather than hoarded on one team.
Mental how much people sleep on Rob.
If he genuinely thinks the efl deal isnt solely because of Rob and Ryan he's more deluded than i thought. Speaks like hes the oracle when hes really a crackhead street preacher
Wrexham are so popular that people think they're on Netflix when they're on Disney plus lol.
What rubbish those hollywood people push
Total bullshit
How on earth would anyone believe wrexham is known beyond niche places
These hollywood people have no idea about football if they think wrexham has a global reach.
