so what we’re going to talk about today is one why are there so many different prices and secondly what are some tips to make sure that you get the best price for your custom fit golf clubs let’s [Music] go hi everyone welcome welcome back to the channel hope you’re having a wonderful day so this video is really all about the variation when it comes to custom golf club prices now I’m not talking about variation in prices between say A you know a few hundred box starter set and a set of Japanese forged blade irons I’m talking about essentially the same irons let’s say but very different prices very different costs in what you’re going to pay depending on who fit them where you are fit and what sort of details are included in that custom fit setup okay first question why are custom fit golf clubs so varied in the pricing well I’m going to break it down into three different kinds of fitting results that you can get now the first kind of fitting results you can get I refer to as basic fitting results these are going to be pretty much your standard setup options with limited modifications so we’re talking about things like shaft length grip size Li angle shaft flex and set configuration set makeup this is usually going to be better for beginner golfers people just getting into golf just sort of starting out now the nice thing about these sort of specs are the pricing is going to be basically the exact same price as it would be just buying the golf clubs off the- wall now moving on from the basic fitting results we get a little bit more advanced fitting results now this is going to include all the basic stuff still the length the LIE the shaft Flex all of that stuff but we’re also going to be adding on some additional layers things like shaft weight shaft profile maybe different grip tapers things like that now this is going to be for someone who is a little bit more uh involved a little bit more invested in golf plays more often maybe plays to a higher level in general people who are going to know a little bit more what they like what they don’t like what they’re trying to accomplish with getting fitted golf clubs now these clubs again like the basic setup are in general going to be the measurements will be taken and then we’ll send off those measurements those specs to the manufacturer who will build the clubs to those specs and then ship them back as far as the pricing goes on this type of fitting results in some cases it’s going to be the exact same price as it would be with the basic fitting results so if we had that $150 per Club off thewall price it’s going to again be that $150 price however in some cases it might not and it might go up a little and we’re going to come back to that a little bit later on now the last type of fitting results are basically just taking what we already talked about in the other two and just going up another level as far as customization as far as options go why would somebody go into this category well this is going to be in general for people who are more invested in their game who have played golf for longer who know exactly what they’re looking for maybe they’re looking for some certain aftermarket shafts that aren’t readily available maybe they’re looking for a build that is not quote unquote traditional either in the length of say half inch intervals between irons Maybe wanting something different maybe they’re wanting to do something different with the swing weights maybe they’re interested in counterbalancing which I talk about all the time on this channel all of those things are going to be reasons why we would have these sort of fitting results now with these sort of fitting results these are really going to come down to being built by a club Builder by a dedicated Club maker not necessarily being the specs being shipped off to the manufacturer to build because this is going sort of above and beyond what they usually do so this is if you really want that Custom Touch these are going to be a little bit broader as far as what the pricing can be whereas the basic and the standard or slightly more advanced fitting results stay in general around that same price point once we get into this category the prices can fluctuate a little bit more and that is the perfect lead into the second part of this video which is is what can you do to make sure that you’re getting the best price for your custom fit golf clubs number one pay attention to what the manufacturers actually offer you as far as shafts and grips I think a lot of people just assume that if you change into a different shaft than what is on the rack what is on the wall when you pick up a golf club that you’re going to pay extra for it but that is often not the case very often you will find that different manufacturers have a list of different shafts different shaft specs different weights different profiles different flexes that will allow you to fine-tune your golf club a little bit more and not actually have to pay anything extra for it now just to be aware different Club manufacturers are going to have different offerings when it comes to shafts and grips and this is going to be both in what our stock options and what our upcharge option options or ones that you’re going to have to pay a little bit extra for but in either case definitely be aware that all these different manufacturers offer different shaft and grip options other than just what comes on the club off the racks all right tip number two and I’m going to be now utilizing this build recommended build spec sheet from a big well-known fitting company I’m not going to say who it is I’ve redacted all the information so you can’t see who it is and you can’t see who it was for but on here I want you to pay attention to and I’ve talked about this before in other videos but the shaft puring you can find my stance on it and my reasoning for it in plenty of other places but we’ll just go ahead and say it for the amount of money that they’re charging $40 per shaft you can do a awful lot with an extra $200 or $300 you can pick up an extra wedge or two an extra hybrid any number of things that’s going to be far more helpful than any anything that the shaft alignment promise is going to actually fulfill for you so if someone is willing to give you this service if they are not going to charge you for puring or flowing or shaft spining then whatever I don’t care because is it going to help no but is it going to hurt no but if someone’s trying to charge you $40 per Club on top of everything else for this service that should be a hard pass save that money and use it somewhere else so finally tip number three and that is make sure you understand make sure you know what the component prices of your golf club actually are and not just what someone tells you they are once again we’re going to go back to this build spec sheet here now when you look at the head price you will see that price that they’re giving you there is the exact same price that you’re going to get if you buy these irons off the rack from any retailer that price is pretty much right on but now move down to the shaft price we’ve got these Aerotech steel fiber flight control shafts and they’ve got them listed at $128 well that all sounds well and good until you actually look online and see what the retail price is of these shafts and guess what it’s under $60 so somehow in this build setup here the shafts have gone up in price an extra $70 now be aware they do put on here that this includes the assembly charge but that means that even if they’re selling them at the standard price of say $58 then they’re charging you $70 per Club to put them together I don’t know of a single Club Builder anywhere at least in this country where you’re going to get charged $70 a club to put a golf club together unless we are doing some very outof the-box stuff in that build so all that is to say make sure you understand what the prices are for the golf club components that you’re fit into because looking at this build sheet and looking at the final price here versus what it should actually and what it would actually cost you to build these clubs going through someone different than this fitter is going to be very very different all right so custom fit golf clubs can they be expensive can they be more expensive of course depending dep on the configuration depending on the shafts and the grips and what particulars are being done or who’s building them they can fluctuate in price to a certain amount however there are far too many golf clubs Being Fit and sold where the price just does not match up with what you’re actually getting so the whole gist of this whole video is really understand what you’re getting understand what you’ve been fit into and understand what the prices are of those particular components because what you will very often find is what they are retailing for and what you are being charged for them don’t really match up hey again if you enjoyed this video make sure you go down below like comment subscribe to the channel hit the Bell icon you’ll be Bought a nice set of Japanese Tour Stage heads and built them up with Apollo stepless stiff shafts for under $200. Zing! The Japanese play five times then sell on eBay.
$70 a club install ….. good work if you can get it. 🙃
Good assessment. It’s more important to find a good fitter to assess your game correctly. I did a shaft fitting with a “big well known” company fitter and I have to say that I was fortunate to get a good fitting. My consistency changed significantly to the point of improving my round by 3.5 strokes. Just from focusing in on my most inconsistent play. Anyone who is in the Atlanta area, check out EFG. He is good.
I reached out to a fitter / builder in Augusta and was quoted $75 per club for assembly… Yes, assembly only. The fitting was a separate fee.
Profiteering comes to mind.
I'm tempted to try out a few models from Maltby when I look at upgrading from my srixon ZX4s. I appreciate what CC did for me in terms of my 3 wood which is probably the best club I have ever hit, but it was quite costly. Thankfully it won't break me but man that bill was no joke.
So how then, does a company like yours make money AJ? Your overhead, your incredible experience and the like. If you're using retail prices to calculate a price, how do you add a markup for your time and experience and not price yourself out of the business? I work as a club builder at a chain in Canada.
Some custom shops only have “head only” account, meaning they get bulk access to iron heads “at cost” and as AJ pointed out you pay the “premium” for having the privilege of them building them for you. I do think they should charge something, it is a service, but as was pointed out 2x shaft cost, 1.5x grip, and an add on to PURE a shaft is ridiculous. You can take your build sheet and shop it out for a much better price.
great video
Why not expose the company that’s ripping people off in that build sheet? Club Champion?
Question: Can you make a video on the best way to buy Takomo (or any other brand) Golf club? Should we just use online calculator for shaft, or buy heads only, or get fitted for best shift… What do you recommend?
