if you like so many golfers struggle to get the lead arm straight through impact um it could well be a simple case of a misunderstanding of how to do it I see a lot of golfers out there trying to stretch the lead arm out at impact and the problem with that is that your Trail arm is trying to do the same your Trail arm is swinging the club down and trying to straighten itself again in order to create this triangle that you had at the beginning of the golf swing and get the club down to the golf ball if the lead arm starts doing that as well you’re going to hit into the ground and if you hit into the ground often enough you’re going to have a new idea and start pulling the club to yourself whether it be intentionally or intuitively to stop yourself hitting the ground and you’ll start topping it so how in the world did the pros manage to get this straight lead on a slightly bent Trail arm in Impact um and they’re not pushing the arm or straightening the arm in any way well it’s all about kind of the physics of moving this triangle of your shoulders arms and hands through the golf ball if you can really think of it as just a triangle here which is hung on an axis it’s not exactly what it is but it’s gives you a kind of at least a kind of a visual point to start with if you were wanting to move this triangle now obviously you could kind of start down here and swing it right and left and because it’s hanging on a an axis up here it would actually move the triangle but if you want the triangle to kind of move itself and you were saying well where do I apply a force in order to get it to do that you would apply a force down the lead side in order to move the triangle to the right in this case and down the trail side to move it to the left that means in the case of the back swing you’re quite right to be trying to stretch the lead side but in the downswing you should be almost trying to stretch the trail side fortunately in physics wherever there’s a Yin there’s a Yang which means that the triangle is remaining a triangle not because we’re pushing away with both sides because were we to push away with both sides the triangle wouldn’t move what right or left but as we push with the with the lead side we pull up with the trail side and as we push down with the trail side we pull up with the lead side fortunately when I give my body these kind of impulses these kind of commands it automatically realizes that in order for that to happen the shoulders have to turn the hips have to help them and the legs should do a bit of work as well but if you actually look at what’s happening to the lead arm through impact it’s being pulled away from the ball with the lead shoulder and pull down to the ball with the trail arm and therefore the lead arm is being stretched out not by actually pushing consciously towards the ball with the lead arm but simply by the opposing forces that the trail side of the triangle in that case and the lead shoulder are actually applying to it and this is the reason that the pros seem to have such a beautiful long lead arm for such a super long time even after impact because the rotation that they’re able to achieve in their hips and shoulders means that they are really getting that lead shoulder up and behind them away from the ball the tra arm is then working down in order to stretch down to to the ground and get the ball and this is giving them this beautiful long straight lead arm at impact as ever golf is a counterintuitive sport you just got to think of it as swinging a triangle to the right and to the left and to do that rather than moving it here you’re going to move it here and then here so there’s a circle of force as I move it back the force is going down the lead on up the trail arm and across the shoulders as I move through the ball down the trail arm up the lead arm and across the shoulders this is helping me to move the club not only backwards and forwards but down the target line for that short space between my feet where I need it before swinging it around my body and into the end position this is one of the reasons why it looks so simple it’s simply these these forces are perfectly balanced in a good golf swing and that is basically the reason that the pros are on the driving range every day getting a balance between the forces in the lead side pulling up away and around the body and the forces in the trail side pushing down and through the golf ball and if you do that perfectly you have complete control about the amount of ground contact there is and where and when and how you make contact with a golf ball hope this has helped you to better understand how you can keep your lead arm straight through impact if it has hit that like button if you haven’t subscribed to the Channel please do so and we’ll see you in the next one

  1. Excellent video Jonathan on "forming a triangle" and "how to properly use it!" I have worked on this "triangle" principal for years and although not always used to perfection, I definitely recommend what you are advising! Well Done Jonathan! Always enjoy your input!
