the Cradle of American Golf did not swaddle nor sway on Thursday Piner number two even in its most verdant tones putting the world’s best into conflict only 15 players of this year’s 156 man field able to manage round in red numbers maoy and Klay did more than manage dueling 65s to set the pace at the 124th playing of the United States open and for more we take you out to Pine where our guys chip Patterson and Kyle Porter are standing by two different Corners so we got you covered out there Rory maroy had just about everything covered here in round one fellas KP you are resident Rory historian so I will come your way first here we are looking for four days of this were there any indications here in 18 holes of it that this sort of temperance will be carried for the next three yeah I think there actually were you know the the word that came to mind as we were following his group around late in the afternoon here at Pinehurst was sensible it was very sensible today which is maybe a little unusual for him at at major championships sometimes he takes some aggressive lines maybe takes on a little bit more than he should he played to the middle of greens he hit 15 of 18 greens 11 of 14 Fairways he was just he hit great shots obviously you have to hit great shots to shoot 65 but I thought actually the way he played the golf course Joe was very encouraging for that to continue to be the case uh going into Friday and Beyond I actually asked him about um after the round I asked him like what’s your theme what you what are you trying to do this week what how do you reorient yourself and he said that uh he’s trying to be stoic he’s trying to be conservative he’s trying not to get too far out over his ease and you know obviously it’s working he played against or he played with Scotty sheffler and sander shley the two major winners uh from the the majors that have been played so far this year and he outplayed both of them by a pretty wide Marg so I was encouraged by the 65 but also the way he shot 65 I thought was actually more encouraging than that number itself yeah it was intentional uh everything was with a game plan his 65 ties Martin Ker’s record for the lowest individual round in a Pinehurst hosted US Open and I think about the fact of what he was doing yesterday on Wednesday playing his practice round with who Martin kimer it’s about developing what you want to do and he even spoke after the round about how his approach to us opens in general have changed in the last 5 years or so you know the the one he won in 2011 that wasn’t a US Open the way that the mind of a golf fan thinks about a US Open maybe a little bit of a PGA Championship flare to it and so it is that intentional approach it is that game plan and another word that he used was conservative you know you you go in there and you do exactly what you need to do you fire the middle of greens he had some good numbers today so can it be replicated yes Martin kimer did it right again on Friday uh back in 2014 chip the governing bodies they do tune in so the PJ of America the USGA they will be uh there will be there will be a quote board uh sent out here in the media packet later on tonight chip Patterson on CBS Sports HQ it’s a great point and it it really came through from this side of the screen as well I know you guys took in Rory in person today but that sort of stoicism that measured approach it really you looked up and he shot a 65 you woke up and Patrick hlay was already well on his way to his chip when you take a look at Klay I there was form to indicate that this could come here on Thursday for Rory maroy not so much for KL what do you attribute the success to and not US Open for him I mean nothing better than a what a T12 I think is his best finish at the US Open he has a top 10 finish in every major championship except this one uh he he was not on my board when we were putting together our picks our predictions it was because I thought that the the USGA was a little bit of his cryptonite uh K said to the rounds you know that he thought that going off at 7:40 in the morning not facing a lot of wind having a little bit of humidity he seemed to indicate that he thinks that this course is about to get much sharper teeth he was taking his 65 he was certainly proud of the work that he did but he was looking at this not necessarily as a building block of this is how I’m going to win this major championship and have this big breakthrough the sense that I got from Patrick Klay is that while he made in that morning wave things look easy that looked so difficult for Brooks kka who melted down the stretch or Colin marawa who is on an absolute roller coaster or Justin Thomas who was lost in the sauce from the moment he hit his first t- shot I thought that Patrick Klay seems to know that there’s a long way to go and maybe that’s the scars of US open’s pass so now it’s going to be a big challenge for Klay to be able to replicate this as he he said himself he expects that it’s going to get a lot tougher than it was for him at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday yeah and I think he’s going to have to be better from T to Green chip than he was on Thursday he did a lot of his work uh around the greens on the greens which is obviously great for putting a score together I don’t know if that’s the best formula for maintaining sustaining that number throughout the rest of the week so he’s gonna have to drive it a little bit better I mean the thing about can’t is we’ve seen that he’s capable of it right you watch him play on the PJ tour the Ridder cup basically everywhere about a major championship and you’re saying man this guy didn’t have any holes he’s he’s unbelievable in every aspect kind of like a Xander shley and and then he gets to majors and there’s just nothing there he’s never bu to cut at a US Open but like chip said he’s never had a top 10 either so I it’s kind of been a weird thing with can’t lay a major championships obviously it’s a very good start but I I I worry about sort of his history of Majors specifically at us opens and then keep an eye on driver on Friday if he hits it off the te as as Wayward not Wayward but you gotta be really precise and and if he’s not as precise or if he’s not more precise than he was on Thursday then he could work himself into some very difficult spots as this course gets tougher tougher on Friday Saturday Sunday the numbers in this game always serve as our road map and I find it uh humorous adjacent the fact that Patrick HL and Scotty sheffler currently have almost exactly the same odds according to data golf to win this golf tournament sheffler at one over can’t lay at the top of the leaderboard but it just goes to outline what those two entities have been throughout this season KP the fade was on point for Sheffer but the the fade wasn’t on point today what was the issue that led to this one over well he was bad off the tea I mean like you said he he the haircut looked great but the game did not I don’t know if the haircut looked great either but it did it did it did take play you know I was talking to somebody as we were walking on Sheffer I’m like man he’s just hit some kind of swirly shots today he put himself in just horrible positions off the te very UNS Scotty likee and and you know what he still got a he still got a 71 out of it so I I don’t know that he’s leaving the golf course tonight thinking oh that was terrible you know I got it I I think he’s thinking man that’s about as bad as I can play I still shot 71 I’m still in it so I think he cleans it up off the T gives himself some better opportunities to score I mean even he he had some bad approach shots too I was on number three he’s got a a short iron in and he he just dumps one in the in the right bunker in the in the p p on the left and you’re like man that’s just a very UNS Scotty like shot so he’s got some cleanup work to do but I think that you know his recent history has shown that he can definitely do that cleanup work and and come out shoot something under par on Friday and be right back in this tournament going into the weekend yeah I expect that Scotty Sheffer will be near the top of the leaderboard I expect he will be in it as we like to say um you know going into Saturday going into Sunday but I am sensing a little bit of fatigue and who can blame it he has been operating at such a high level so consistently for the whole part of this season that you know he was talking about you you do everything uh closing out the memorial you leave Columbus you have to end up going to fville late Sunday night you get in super late you wake up you it seemed as though there was a very fast turnaround for him and that maybe that might be contributing to some of what Kyle was describing as just some UNS like shots some UNS Scot like performances and look he maybe he gets a good rest tonight maybe he shows up totally rejuvenated but I’m willing to attribute at least a couple Strokes of this that just to the fact that he has been playing his motor has been running so hot for so long that a course like this that is going to test your perseverance and your resiliency that it it might just be the too much for the world’s number one golfer to be able to overcome and all that said Joe he was one overpar and the field average was three overpar he was still better than field average even with all of those shortcomings yeah his floor is going to beat an average PGA Tour golfer any day of the week fatigued or not but to your point it has been quite a season already with two more major opportunities out in front of Scotty sheffler I I need not even ask a question here I could just say the name and let you guys go but the greatest showman back on display KP Bryson to Shambo I guess I want to it this way we have seen live golfers come back for these majors and we haven’t seen many results Bryson has given us that how in your eyes KP has he maintained this level of competitiveness on the greatest stage without the Reps that these guys on tour are getting yeah it’s it’s an interesting question I think he’s doing it a bunch of different ways he’s obviously got all the YouTube stuff going on I I think what’s interesting Joe is I think he is I don’t know if he’s maintained the competitiveness as much as the creativity you know and and I don’t want to get too steep on the YouTube you know all the things that he’s doing on his YouTube channel but he he does he goes out and tries to break 50 with a partner he goes out and you know plays Hickory clubs he just he does a bunch of different things and the thing that strikes me I was following him around uh not today but during his practice round on Wednesday it seems like he’s just having a lot of fun and I don’t know that that was always the case when he was on the PJ tour I don’t know that that was necessarily A PJ for a specific thing I think he was just younger more immature I think he’s matured a little bit he seems to be just really enjoying himself and obviously good golf is going to lead to enjoying yourself more than bad golf but uh he it is really stru me how much uh fun he’s having not just shooting good scores but also like you said putting on a show for fans and uh they’re eating it up just like they did at balla they they they enjoy I think you dub the greatest showman and that has continued on to to North Carolina this week I I could not be more um impressed by the support that Bryson dambo has I was with him for most of the day and they just they were following him from hole to Hole uh he gave so much of his time in the middle of a major championship rounds to to make eye contact to acknowledge to throw a golf ball uh to almost always identifying a a child or a young person who then was elated and given their dad a high five as though Bryson had made their day Bryson dambo is great for the growth of the game of golf because as I saw this Army of supports and followers they were all between the ages of 10 and 25 and they were loving obviously everything about getting to see him in person after seeing him on their screens uh for for all that time that he’s producing content you pair that with some really really good golf I mean he hit the hole out on 18 after he had missed the Fairway was just phenomenal and Drew a great Roar he had another on the par 55th he hit a low little Runner to give give himself a look at Eagle I mean he had some amazing shots to go with what is already the Showmanship of just sort of his energy I I’ve I’ve been really impressed and enjoyed getting to see what the fan response is because it it is making me as as a fan of golf even more a fan of of Bryon dambo I’m not crushing uh the Youtube videos myself I’m making YouTube videos check out the cover three podcast you know how it goes but I really like what Bryson is for golf right now I certainly do too it’s been fantastic you think of the moments he’s offered us just in these last few weeks the chip in Eagle throughout the tournament there at Valhalla applying the pressure the full starfish hands in the air when he makes the Putt and applies the pressure then on Xander he he’s been there for us there’s there’s almost some Gallagher in it the people want to see a watermelon get smashed I’m going to smash a watermelon that’s that that’s what he’s doing right now and he’s doing it at a very expert level chip we like to do a thing here when you guys are out on site and I’m back here at home because I get I get a little fomo going we do the best thing you saw today so just take me into a moment your favorite thing it can be on course off course that you took in today um there is a a specific Zone here where you get the only people that are allowed to get autographs are kids and it goes back to like when I think about Bryson and when I think about some of these stars that that you’re not you’re not going to be uh signing it for a 45-year-old who’s going to go hawk it on eBay like you’re really making a memory for someone and the uh the crowd here the galleries are filled with just absolute golf fans and this is not a Who’s Who uh tournament the these are people who are The run-of-the-mill Weekend Warriors and hearing some of the commentary seeing the kids that are so fired up about this know go out to some of these Grand stands and you’re listening to the uh the fans that have been there all day they can tell when the shots in the air where it’s going to land just cuz they’ve watched so many golf shots and love every bit of it so uh Pinehurst you know just sort of in general I would say the the kind of fans that are here are ones that really love the game and that’s one of the best things that I saw I think the best thing that I saw is uh I thought chip was talking about The Crushers there when he talked about crushing YouTube video I didn’t I didn’t know what he was referencing there but H the the actual best thing I saw today was uh Rory unintentionally walking in a putt on 18 uh he admitted afterwards he thought he left it short nobody in the crowd that they were going absolutely bananas it was a really cool scene here Joe because I when I think of us opens I think about hot kind of Dusty huge crowds just the the massive Grand stands on 18 we had all that and it’s only Thursday and when Rory walked that butt in uh they went bananas I mean it was really really loud they’re CH chanting his name he’s tied with canay it felt like it felt more electric than any honestly anything we saw last year at L so I I’ve been blown away by Pinehurst it’s been awesome so far far and I thought kind of end of the day Setting Sun Rory charging at can’t lay and making that put on 18 was pretty special my quote of the day came just moments ago Kyle Porter says I don’t want to get too steep on the YouTube called it called it the YouTube the YouTube lose the the Kyle Porter chip patters and great stuff as always we will see you throughout the week from Pinehurst here’s a look at that leaderboard one more time can’t lay and mroy five under setting the pace some historical precedent here at Pinehurst back in 2014 it was Martin kimer your eventual winner going out it was the 65 on Thursday the 65 on Saturday but the course it did stiffen that five under number got him all the way to nine eventually no one else in that field cting anything lower than one under despite those red numbers on Thursday it’s going to heat up it’s going to get fast and these guys are going to be put to the [Music] test e

  1. USGA set up Pinehurst to be easy today. It had some teeth but not even teeth as I thought it would have. Clearly these divas that act like bitches when there is a hard test got their wish. 14 players under par. Just like 2014 65 lead after day 1. I loved how some of them were struggling. 64 players are +2 or better. I hope there is more teeth tomorrow. These players want an easy Pinehurst. I dont think they are good. I think its a case USGA cave into the superstars BITCHING about how tough she was on Tuesday.
