This is the story of the 2009 match between Geelong and St Kilda, with the winner keeping their 14-match undefeated streak. Enjoy!
heading into round 14 of the 2009 AFL season never before had two teams managed to stay unbeaten in the first 13 Rounds the match between jalong and St Kilda at Eddie had stadium was going to get heated one team would continue their impressive 14 match winning streak while the other faced the unfortunate possibility of picking up their first loss of the Season just a minute into the game Gary uplet hble to Tom Hall created some trouble resulting in Clinton Jones scoring the first goal of the match the mistakes continued as cwoods risky kick into the center of the ground was intercepted by Sam Gilbert Nick re Walt’s incredibly courageous Mark ends with him scoring an important goal Sam Gilbert Shrugged off Travis farco took a bounce and passed the ball to Steven mil despite Matthew Scarlet’s attempted spoil s killed to maintain possession Andrew mcqualter then found kazinsky on a lead out wide and this time kazinsky ensured his kick made the distance now Gary abl’s mark on the wing might seem ordinary but it stirred up some controversy the little Master won a 50m penalty against Clinton Jones for an illegal hold even though it looked like abet was playing on the Umpire took him to the edge of the goal square and there was no way one of the game’s alltime greats was going to miss from that close abt’s goal seemed to open up scoring completely for the cats suddenly Travis vco had a shot just before quarter time after marking Gary abl’s pass he missed his kick initially but a head high bump from Zack dwon gave vco a second chance and this time he made it count there was no more scoring for the rest of that quarter and the saints went into the quarter time break with a 19point lead the second started with Nick rewal one of the best forwards in the modern era marking on the lead and unleashing a beautiful kick from a tied angle splitting the middle and extending the Saints lead not long after a notable play unfolded as Steven mil successfully delivered the ball inside 50 to mcqualter although mcqualter shot at goal initially seemed off it slowly drifted back and scraped through the post extending the Saints lead to 31 not one saint player looked like missing despite this jalong was still not out of the game but Milburn confidently booted a powerful kick that easily cleared the goal line Cam Mooney eventually kicked the ball to the square Landing it into the hands of Gary abet abet promptly played on and dribbled it through for a goal later in the game the ball headed into Saint killed his forward line once again Jimmy Bartel stopped the Saints attack with a bold flying mark Mar despite an awkward Landing silder led by 17 points at half time rewalt sprinted away from Harry Taylor and hooked the ball back to Gardner who collided with kitzski but secured the mark kitki badly injured his shoulder but Gardner made it worthwhile with his second goal of the match Scarlet then had possession and found an unguarded Andrew Mackey with a short kick Mackey made perfect connection with the ball unleashing a powerful kick that never looked like missing in St kilda’s forward half a well-placed ball up ended up with abet Matthew Stokes then sent a perfect pass over Sam Gilbert to Cam Mooney on the 50 who didn’t miss a beat for the first time that day jalong fans were starting to believe as the margin shrank to its lowest since the opening minutes Brenan godog quickly moved the ball down kicking it towards rewalt once ruy marked it he saw the vacant goal Square rewal sent the ball over two Jong Defenders maintaining his accurate goal kicking for the season with a major it was the last score of the quarter bringing the margin down to just 10 points at three quarter time the Saints started the last quarter strong scoring the first two goals Justin kitki nailed a massive 50 m set shot for the first goal looking very good the second goal happened after Shane mumford’s handle blunder hitting Harry Taylor’s Boot and going out on the fool Lee Montana quickly took the free kick finding Michael Gardner in space Gardner wasted no time playing on and kicking his third goal of the match however the cats turned things around quickly scoring the next three goals Travis varco’s clever diving tap to Max Rook gave a rook his first goal next Jimmy Bartel had a set shot from 60 M out but he passed up the opportunity to Paul Chapman who bombed the ball forward Chapman’s floating top seemed like Michael Gardner would touch it but a last second slip allowed the ball to roll through for a goal rewalt set up a perfect pass for Steven mil who easily outran Defender James Kelly and caught the ball with a simple chest Mark although mil’s kick was a bit wobbly it went way too high for Shane Mumford to reach scoring a much needed goal for the Saints jalong started an attack from their own back line to their forward line bto’s accurate pass to Darren Milbourne was impressive and the defender had no trouble taking the mark for a Defender playing up forward milburn’s set shot kick was exceptional Cameron Ling had the ball in the middle of the ground making a precise pass to Cam Mooney Matthew Stokes somehow left unmarked on the wing received the ball from money played on and scored a goal on the run from 40 m out narrowing jong’s deficit SC for the next 3 minutes both teams struggled to score until Luke bull the 2003 Rising Star winner found space on the wing he then centered the ball to the goal Square where Michael Gardner took one of the greatest marks you’ll ever see running back into traffic I saw holy on the ball Gardner waited 2 minutes to take his kick taking advantage of the time to compose himself as an injured Harry Taylor left the field the big man managed to guide the ball through securing the lead for the Saints with only 30 seconds left jalong had one final chance Cory enr kicked the ball forward to Cam Mooney who was 60 M from goal honey used his body to brilliantly push kazinsky under the ball and he was ready to run onto it but the Umpire blew his a whistle money had given away a free kick for a push in the back jalong needed to Mark Kit’s kick but they couldn’t Gardner rose up and grabbed the mark over mford the Saints successfully ran out the clock maintaining their undefeated streak while the cats suffered their first loss of the season however jalong would later get their Revenge defeating the Saints in in the 2009 Grand Final to claim their second Premiership in 3 [Applause] years some kill to win thanks for watching subscribe if you enjoyed the video much in oh how I want to
