Master the Twist and Turn: Perfect Your Body Rotation in the Golf Downswing with David Leathem Golf Tips
Welcome to David Leathem Golf (DL GOLF TIPS) your ultimate source for Golf Tips! In this video, we dive deep into a crucial aspect of the golf swing: body rotation in the golf swing. Specifically, we focus on a move I have coined the “Twist and Turn,” designed to help you rotate better through the golf ball. When many golfers come to see me for lessons, they express a desire to rotate their bodies better in the downswing, harder, and faster. However, the common issue is that their club face angle isn’t positioned to allow for proper rotation through the golf ball.
**What You’ll Learn in This Golf Tip Video:**
– The importance of body rotation in a golf swing
– How to execute the “Twist and Turn” move
– Tips for twisting the grip to square the club face
– How twisting the grip will improve your rotation in the golf downswing
– How to achieve better golf shots through a square club face and more body rotation
Body rotation in the golf swing is absolutely crucial for a powerful and consistent swing. The “Twist and Turn” technique addresses the issue of improper club face angle, allowing your body to naturally rotate better through the golf ball. This move not only helps you hit better golf shots but also improves your overall game.
**Why Body Rotation Matters:**
Body rotation is a key element in the golf swing that generates power and accuracy. However, for effective body rotation through impact, the club face must be in the right position. The “Twist and Turn” move focuses on twisting the grip to square the club face, enabling your body to react and rotate more in the downswing.

what does rotation of the body actually do it’s known as an opener if I stand here and leave everything alone and just rotate you can see that that will open my club face okay you’ll actually find your body wanting to rotate much more in the golf swing hey golfers and welcome back to my YouTube channel in today’s video we’re going to talk about how twisting the grip can actually help you rotate your your body much more in the D swing the two things are really important they have to work together we’re going to discuss that in today’s video If I had a pound or a buck dollar for every time someone said to me do I need to rotate more in the D swing or through the ball rotate faster harder I would have probably more money than I make off YouTube but it’s a really common question and yes you do need to rotate this but this has to be in the right position and that’s what we’re going to look at in today’s video so before we get started if you haven’t done so already please don’t forget to hit the like button hit the Subscribe button and let me know in the comments if there’s anything you need help with in your golf game now let’s get started okay so let’s discuss some things as to what I see the majority of golfers doing okay and I know you probably hear this all the time on YouTube but without a doubt like teaching day in and day out it’s such a common thing and if you’re watching this there’s a high possibility that you have it too okay and that is an open Club face now if we want body rotation into the golf swing so think about you kind of see these pros and they get to impact hips are really open shoulders are quite Square we have this lovely sort of impact position as I say hips pointing left shoulder Square we all want to get there and obviously we have some limitations in our body each of you will have different things but definitely more rotation is a good thing in the go swing but what is rotation of the body actually do it’s known as an opener if I stand here and leave everything alone and just rotate you can see that that will open my club face okay now back to what I was saying which is really common among golfers that I teach is open Club faces now that can happen in takeaway top down swing but in general the last parallel which is the club when it arrives here will be more tow up or in some Cas is even this way this would be an open face and then what happens is if I’m thinking here right I really want to rotate well yes I’m rotating but because the face was open here I don’t stand a chance now of getting that club face Square so what does happen when this is open here the body kind of stalls it’s known as pivot stall so the body shuts down and says right I’ll let this kind of catch up squares the face and now my impact position looks a lot like my setup position with my shoulders and hips quite Square okay what other implications does that have if I’m open here and I shut this down to let the body or the club pass you can see the club heads passing my hands it’s kind of that scoop motion here so yes I’ve squared the face but I’ve got the club closer to the ground I could hit it heavy fat thin those types of things okay or I’ll have to lift up in order to stop that so there’s loads of things that go against this all right so the first thing is let’s fix the face and basically what I’m saying is that your body is only really reacting to what the club face is doing you know if it’s wide open it says okay I’ll react by stopping and let this square up if this was more Square it might go left if you stop your body turning so your body reacts by saying okay I can now rotate and turn so I arrive at this nice impact position with a square face and the beauty is if this is here and I can now rotate my body and not only keep the face square but I achiev some shaftline and I’ve got that lovely body rotation all right so that’s the why let’s look at the high or in my accent hi for Americans watching how okay let’s get stuck in used to get that all the time when I lived in America they didn’t understand the accent I would say hi and I’d have to then change it and say how so that people can understand me H even though it’s an English language it’s got a little bit of a a random accent to it okay so let’s get stuck in more to the serious stuff we have twisting the grip right that’s the sort of phrase that I’ve used and that’s what we want to feel in this drill okay so twisting the grip is simply we’re not isolating or doing anything with our body it’s isolating the wrists to do this right so if I twist hold the club in front of yourself and twist your hands count counterclockwise you can see that that will close the face okay clockwise we’ll open the face and that’s what we don’t want we want to get this face much stronger so that we can free up that body rotation so when your face is open you will have it either in the takeaway the top or last parallel so either open here pointing more to the sky obviously this indicator helps here you can get to the top with the face open or down here and the face open that’s whenever we have to stall and let that catch up okay so that’s a little bit on you to find out how your Club face is in those three positions just to give you an idea in the takeaway we’d like the club to match our spine so the Leading Edge or the sole as you look at this matching my spine get to the top we like it to match the forearm then at the top and then last parallel down here matching our spine again okay so you have to check those things because you might have a good takeaway and a good top but actually when you come down into this position is when it’s open okay so this is going to tell you whereabouts you need to twist the grip if your takeaway is good for example here well you don’t need to twist the grip counterclockwise because now you’re going to have a closed face so it’s kind of on you a little bit to check and see how you are in each of those three positions if you’re opening the takeaway chances are you’re going to be open at the top and then the last parallel so you might need to twist this grip much earlier in your swing if you get to the top and you’re pretty good with the Leading Edge matching the forearm well you need to twist in the down swing to get this club F squared up okay so what I’m going to use is the downswing feeling of twisting all right I get to the top in a pretty good position hopefully you’ve checked these things and we’re good right if I twist the grip clockwise remember this way open this is what a lot of golfers that I see will do here twist face gets very open right we want to counter that by going counterclockwise so here twist the grip that way so you can see now that that is putting my club face more to the ground other cool thing about it is when I twist that grip counterclockwise in the down swing I also get some band in my right wrist of a video coming on that soon I’m banding my right wrist which we want into that impact it’s also helping me flatten or even bow this wrist to where I can be in this position and guess what I had better rotate from that position okay so the thing is you have to check we still got a little bit more to go but you have to check where abouts your Club face is open is it takeaway top or last parallel okay that will tell you where you need to feel this twist if it’s open in the takeaway twist it sooner and then continue to twist it counterclockwise throughout the whole golf swing as I said the body will react to what the club face is doing I can guarantee you and you can let me know in the comments but if you twist the grip the way that we’re talking here you’re going to feel a dramatic difference coming down as to how much your body wants to actually rotate okay it has to because if you do your old move from this open face the body stops but we have it twisted down if you’re anything like me and you like to wear a good quality leather glove when you’re playing golf but don’t fancy paying a high price tag for it only to fall apart in about three shots well go and check out my channel sponsors page GX golf clubs.com use code David at checkout and you’ll save yourself a nice little bit of cash as well well that ball it’s just going to go miles left so don’t be afraid if you hit a few of those with your first shot it’s expected first few shots it’s expected and then what you got to think is okay right so I’m twisting that counterclockwise so my face is much better it’s going left because your old compensation is no longer needed so what you can start to do is get some more rotation so I’m going to try here counterclockwise face is really good I can turn like mod let’s try and yeah I hit that one really good and felt my body wanting to rotate because part of my brain knows the ball wants to go straight this feels closed to counter that I can rotate like crazy okay guys so little bit of a Mad one today because it’s kind of matchups and it’s super important that we get that club face in the right position in those three positions Club face is King not just for start Direction but it’s also sending signals back to your body and how to react to make the the ball go to the Target okay so if we can fix this with that counterclockwise move get that face more closed which an actual fact is square you’ll actually find your body wanting to rotate much more in the golf swing do not add body rotation if your Club face is open here because it’s only going to go to the right or you might even shank it okay guys so listen thanks so much for watching if you enjoyed this video please don’t forget to hit the like button hit the Subscribe button and I’ll see you guys in the next one
