freaking first cut goly welcome to the first cup podcast I’m Rick gaming and this is your mega preview pod for this week’s Us open it is storylines it is Best Bets it is one and done and it is presented by FanDuel sports book make every moment more Patrick McDonald Greg ducha we’re getting right into it because there is breaking news that’s where we would have hit the drop if we had a yeah so we’ll have to work on that at some point but uh imagine there was a drop there so moments ago uh John Rah has just withdrawn from the US Open he had been battling the toe concern a lesion between his pinky toe and the next toe which I believe is the ring toe and he released this statement on Twitter says quote after Consulting with numerous doctors in my team I have decided it is best for my long-term Health to withdraw from this week’s Us Open championship ship to say I’m disappointed as a massive understatement I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff volunteers and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing Championship hopefully I’ll be back in Action sooner then later end quote Greg du charm your reaction uh what a year for John ROM um I mean it has been a little strange at the majors his performance has not been great uh now has to withdraw from well you could argue is his best major right he has performed very well in US opens uh it seems like a test that he’s always up to the challenge for and and now he’s not able to play um obviously what what is happened with his feet does not look very fun um while it’s kind of a I mean when you’re dealing with a leion it’s not this but it’s kind of a a silly reason to be withdrawing from a tournament you have toe injury um but this seems like a little more than a toe injury so I hope that he is able to get this under control and um better and and has no more issues with his feet last five us opens T10 12 win t23 and T3 but Patrick that is a far cry from his major championship record through two additions this year T45 the Masters as the defending champion and a missed cut at the PGA bummer big bummer whenever John ROMs not at a tournament seems to uh take a hit I mean like you said he’s a great major championship competitor he had the longest made cut streak in Majors before that uh pretty surprising miscut at the PGA Championship and uh it sucks he won’t be around this week I will say the one positive thing we have going for us is we don’t need to uh see pictures of feet throughout the week because let me tell you there were some snipers out there at Pinehurst today just shooting photos of his feet and crazy tan line which is expected he had the dividers in as well one flip-flop one real shoe and so I think the one positive we can take from this is no more feet content because Patty don’t do feet content su’s not there but happy no more feet it’s not so much the uh photos that do it for me it’s the thought of like the in between the toes feel like he could pick things up with those like uh like fingers and like the infe it’s like an infection between the toes I don’t know man and I was honestly his he his right foot is the clubbed foot correct normal question to ask on a golf podcast I I think that’s I think that’s right as well that yeah that’s what leads to the short back swing um 5050 yeah and based on the photo I’ve never seen a club foot before in my life this could have been your chance so based on the photo I mean I mean that looked like a pretty normal foot but I will say how they’re describing it like you know we talked about it on Spotlight how they were numbering all the toes like oh it’s between the fifth toe and the fourth toe it kind of made me believe for a second that he might have an extra toe do they count from left to right from Big to small or small to big I think it’s big to small right Greg that would make sense to me um yeah I would say your first toe is probably your big toe M that’s just me the pinky would probably have something to say about that yeah maybe the left pinky maybe it maybe it just goes in order one through 10 you start go left to right it’s another option I kind of like that between toes seven and eight yeah you could turn a lot of heads with that method yeah yeah so your big toes would be five and six I mean it is it is um it is indp mbly a better way to do it because you would never confuse what foot it’s on right you wouldn’t have to do like 4 L correct yes I like this I like this Greg Greg has a lot of ideas sometimes they hit yeah sometimes they hit well John ROM is out uh which stinks but the championship must go on and Pinehurst number two is doing its best part to to be the main topic of conversation at least through Tuesday we’ve got a a bunch a bunch of pressers done Greg we’ve got a bunch of videos we’re seeing guys try everything from around these greens many times it’s getting no no no Matumbo back right down to their back down to their feet we’re getting firm we’re getting fast we’re getting difficult we’re getting options we’re getting every little thing about this place yes this is going to be a very serious test um it looks extremely firm you heard Windham Clark say in his press conference yesterday that they’re already borderline um Martin kimer used the word borderline as well in his presser today um he also said which I thought was interesting when he went when he got to pin Hurst in 201 uh 14 he thought the winning score would be somewhere between three and five over and shot nine under so he surprised himself as well but he he thought it was an extremely difficult test then and kind of feels like it’s just as difficult if not more difficult this week so yeah there’s the quote from uh from from Windam already borderline um it’s it’s Tuesday and that quote was delivered on Monday that’s right it’s pretty sick yeah yeah I mean you’re you’re running a risk with with greens like this and not a lot of water you’re G to have to be careful because I mean we’ve lost the golf course could come very early Thursday morning uh if this trend continues tiger had a quote Patrick that says quote I foresee watching guys play pingpong now he’s not being literal he’s being figurative he’s referring to uh chipping and or putting over a green then back over then back or maybe back to your feet I don’t think that’s how ping pong works but I think that’s what he’s referring to at first I thought Matt coocher might have a good chance maybe Phil Mickelson with with the pingpong although the Phil that picture from shinok is gonna get it its run this week after he actually did play ping pong I mean people forget John Daly did something similar in uh the US Open at pinhurst as well just whacking the ball when it was going to come back down to his feet but I I think you know we talked about the decision making throughout the bag get pin Herz number two the decision- making around the green rck is probably the most intriguing part about this golf tournament to me we’ve seen col morawa use fivewood we’ve seen Tiger Woods use four iron we’ve seen Xander shafley talk about how he’s probably gonna putt a ton we’ve seen someone like cam Smith use 60 degree use 56 degree to get get more bounce went into the Grain and I think that decision-making process when these guys are going to be okay putting it to 15 feet and when they need to put a little more check on the ball and get something inside five and try to get a little creative with it knowing it could bite them in the butt is super intriguing to me and uh leads to a lot of variety around the greens and a lot of different ways to get it done here’s the quote around variety and creativity Greg this is courtesy of Rory mroy just just today he says I think this course excuse me a course like this demands a different skill set uh and also some creativity I think that’ll be on display this week I’ve already seen some videos online of people maybe trying Fairway Woods or having lob wedges or Putters as Patrick mentioned and then he would go on to say that I think for the viewer at home that’s more exciting than seeing guys hack it out a 4inch rough all the time hopefully that comes to fruition and it’s an exciting golf tournament yeah if you if you understand the game it’s definitely exciting to see what kind of option players are going to choose um sometimes when when you think you can putt from everywhere it takes short game skill away that is not the case with the types of putts that you’ll be facing even if you do choose putter um so it still will be a very difficult decision especially it looks like there’s a lot of divots already kind of accumulating around the green a lot of fluffed up Turf right that’s gonna that’s going to create an issue with the putter at some point during the week uh so I’m very curious to see how that’s going to play out um but you know what I’m also very curious in is are players going to utilize one strategy say okay I have the best luck with my four tiger was using four irons right do I have my best luck with a four iron do I have my best shot with a fivewood like col morawa uh and and are they going to start to use that develop the touch with it throughout the week and just continue to go the same uh the same route I I do think that’s a possibility but nonetheless player to player you’ll see different strategies from everybody uh which which I do think is a very cool aspect and and probably the defining centerpiece of what makes Pinehurst Pinehurst yes there will be a lot of conversation about on and around the greens Victor havin Patrick spoke about the challenges off the tea and getting to those greens he said he is going to be aggressive off the tea and conservative into greens he said he understands the value of Greens in regulation for this week and he thinks the best way to hit a green in regulation is to hit a shorter iron in so even if that means taking on more risk off the te by being aggressive he thinks he will do that yeah and Victor is one of the best probably analytical players there is on the PGA tour one who really goes by the numbers and you look at the statistics from 2014 70% of Fairways were hit like less than 50% of Greens in regulation and so the best chanes these guys have holding these greens that are big on paper but play very small like pretty much Pebble Beach is by putting the shortest Club in your hand even if it’s not from the Fairway and honestly out there at Pinehurst if you get wide you kind of want to go wider than wide you go off the beaten path so you would avoid all those bushes and what chicken WI and all that fun stuff the waste areas and kind of get more into the pin straws and have more of a chance so I uh I like the way Victor is seemingly going to approach this someone like Bryson deshambo talked about needing to play patient right this isn’t a place he believes he can overpower quite like that although we’ll see if that comes to fruition as well but I’m I’m really interested to see what these uh these guys do coming in the greens if if really if they are okay just middle of the green 30 40 feet because I mean that is taxing that is taxing and you’re gonna see someone who’s playing Great Golf get a little aggressive make the mistake card a double Bogey and that’s what the us open’s all about just wearing you down here’s what I hope does not happen Greg I Envision a scenario in which these guys get smoked on Thursday or Friday we’ve lost the golf course it’s unplayable this isn’t fair and the USGA buckles and lays water on this thing I hope and I from my lips to the golf God’s ears that the USGA stands Resolute and allows fire and pain it is a that’s a diabolical take now I understand I understand that you want to see absolute Carnage in Mayhem for one week a year right it’s a very common sentiment um but I do hope that the golf course is playable when you hit good shots what I don’t like to see is when golf courses are the the difference between like the difference between a good shot and a bad shot it it rides on like a you know the top of a roof you get too much on one side it gets too soft and too receptive and all of a sudden bad shots aren’t penalized and everything’s fine that’s no good and then at the on the other end of the spectrum if it’s too hard and good shots aren’t rewarded then everybody’s missing the green anyway and it doesn’t matter whether you hit good shots or bad shots and and so the the contest is compromised at that point that’s what happens when you lose a golf course right becomes becomes unfair and impossible to play so I empathize with the players a little bit foreseeing this situation Rick I I want poor shots even mediocre shots to be penalized they should be in a US Open you just have to make sure that um that good shots are still rewarded okay I I rck I’m with you because let’s look at last year’s US Open Lac one no fans allowed on the west coast that’s beside the point you have the lowest score average in US Open history you have the lowest 36hole cut in US Open history you have the most sub 70 rounds in US Open history and you have the most sub 66 rounds in US Open history obviously the pair of 62s on Thursday Xander Shuley and Ricky Fowler a 63 on Sunday with Tommy Fleetwood they had their time to have fun this is not the year for fun let them have it boys unleash fire in pain pendulum last year swung all the way to one side and it is time to swing all the way back to the other go too far the other way we’re not g to try to get it right we’ll just go too the opposite of last year and then at at Oakmont next year it’ll get a little bit better okay we’ll get it right next year that’s not that’s not for this year because sometimes the weather won’t even cooperate so if you’re if it’s G to cooperate you might as well burn it all down all right well look it it’s looking like that’s going to happen it really does I mean I can’t imagine what Thursday’s going to look like with some of these I I don’t know what they’re going to do with whole locations but um I can’t imagine they’re going to be overly friendly with them and when you have conditions like this it it is going to be absolutely brutal yeah appointment viewing for sure okay um we’re gonna jump into the story lines we’re going to go through a bunch of different players and see where we stand get a little State of the Union on on some of these guys we still have our Best Bets we have our oneandone selections coming up but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners ladies and we’re back this is the storyline section we’re gonna run through a bunch of players here um I’m just gonna start with Scotty sheffler but honestly is there anything about Scotty that we haven’t said right I mean we can rehash the record the crazy stuff that he’s doing right now uh I think everyone understands is there any anything new worth diving into right now about scottty Shuff no maybe a couple of stats that you haven’t heard okay um he’s we know he’s tenth in driving accuracy but he’s he’s first in distance from the edge of the Fairway so he is if he wasn’t as long he’d be the straightest driver on the PGA tour uh that’s how I interpret that he’s also fourth on tour in scrambling which I I know that his around the green performance draws a lot of attention um but scrambling includes putton and he’s fourth in that category and and the last one that really sticks out to me is approach putt performance you know is putting maybe the weakest area of his game I think it it actually is the weakest area of his game and I’m not going out on a limb to say that but his lag putting is quite good um he’s 13th in approach P performance on the year so I mean just more signs pointing towards Scotty Sheffer Patrick if everything that you’ve learned and downloaded from that was that was like a corporate America thing not from like a not I don’t want to know what your download history is downloading a lot of big pictures week I guess the information that you have consumed from uh Pinehurst so far this week are you more bullish on Scotty bearish on Scotty or just the same on Scotty probably the same because coming into the week I figured this was a golf course Taylor Made for Scotty Sheffer you got to drive it long and straight and like Greg just laid out he is long and straight you put it together he’s number one in total driving oh you have to hit High long irons guess who does that the best in the world Scotty Sheffer and you had to have a ridiculous around the green game all while packaging that together with great course management a good head on your shoulders and the ability to not get too aggressive at the inopportune time guess who does all that the best it’s Scotty Sheffer Scotty sheffler Scotty Sheffer so yeah I think uh I think it’s setting up pretty well for him if you want to poke holes in it should we poke holes in it I I uh yeah I know he’s not great he’s not great on Lightning Fast Bermuda that isn’t his bread and butter obviously the stats tell a different story with the new spider but I think that could be something to look at and you look at all his courses that he’s won at recently I guess this year pretty much courses he’s won at before courses he’s played out before he should have won at mirfield Village a couple years ago well he won this year the players API all this stuff the Augusta naal so if you want they’re not large holes I’m not saying they’re large holes but if you want to try to poke a couple holes in it maybe those are them Greg make the case make the case against Scotty sheffler it’s an unfair test um he doesn’t get rewarded for hitting the best shots in the field and this becomes a you know just a bizarre contest and a lot of Randomness comes into play if it goes over the edge to unfair and when Randomness comes into play it it’s why I don’t think it makes for the best golf tournament doesn’t decide who the best player will actually is it may decide who the luckiest player is so um yeah I think some I think some bad luck could play a role if you want to poke a hole in it um and and a situation where he could the best shot that he can play that doesn’t work the best shot to play doesn’t work that would’ be so it’s actually nothing Scotty related it’s just like nothing Scotty related man Greg is so anti St Andrews and anti Pinehurst number two potentially potentially potentially if it gets ugly if it gets ugly it’s not it’s not the golf course you just you got to set up the golf course for the golf course that you have you know how about the other sh golfer in the field that’s Xander sh offley who has an unbelievable track record Patrick at the United States open let me read you his last seven results and tell me if these are good or not 10th 14th 7th fifth 3 Sixth and fifth you okay with that I’m okay with that especially since those are Xander schley’s only US Open appearances he has started his career seven straight top 15s only two other players have done on that Walter Hagen Bobby Jones it’s the longest current streak since ja okay who had 12 top 15s in a row and you look at let’s say last week he was not good from T green at all at mirfield Village for Xander shafley standards and you know what he did finished T8 still and so I I I I love him coming into this week he sounds super confident and uh he should be he he should be right there come Sunday I’d be shocked if he isn’t if you like great finishes at Majors to start your career Greg Colin morawa is trending yet again already twice a major Champion has now finished fourth and third at each of the first two majors for this year uh gave Scotty all he could handle at the memorial played well at the Charles Schwab looks like an elite ball Striker again am I missing anything um he’s back with his coach Rick cessing house who I should say Dr Rick cessing houseee which is important because he doesn’t just address the technical areas of the game they address the mental areas of the game and and I imagine that the conversations they’re having about K Mora’s mental play is extremely positive right now and should be uh but but the last little hurdle for them to climb is do you really believe that you can win and I I look back to the memorial last year and he had two opportunities at 15 and 16 to get up and down from places you could get up and down from and if he does that he probably wins the tournament or at least puts a whole lot more pressure on Scotty sheffler and I wonder if it was just simply a belief factor that U that held him back but it’s another step in the right Direction and I think for both Dr Rick sessing house and col morawa they got to feel like they have the momentum rolling the right way um many of the same aspects that uh the reason why this golf course fits Scotty sheffler many of them are true about Colin Mora as well and I’m fascinated about using that little fivewood around the green I think that could be a great play oh yeah what if he he could he might like use it off the T there might be a hole where he uses it off the T uses it on the second shot uses it on the third shot well they’re going to have like a one Club rule you thinking uh on like a par five I understand and then he might become the only golfer in history I don’t know if this is true we’d have no way of confirming this to play a hole and make eagle with entirely one Club I was going to say do you think non hole in one category there has ever been a man or woman to play a golf hole at the professional level with one Club yes but I think I think three okay so post post 1950 when you know they actually had more so I’m I’m assuming someone has hit like six iron six iron and hold out four iron four iron yeah but when you get to three shots with the same club that feels a little okay you could have done this you could have done wedge to a par three left it short oh chipped it up comes down chip it in yeah that’s that’s a par yeah I think if you say three Strokes Eagle all one club that’s possibly never been done and five five W’s probably the best chance for that right five fivewood or three-wood I hope he does it oh that would be amazing that would be amazing 3,000 words about it you’re ripping driver on the par fives yeah you are you definitely are although Z Xander said he’s like colins’s got that little five worth thing and he’s disgusting at it he was raving about so I’m I’m pumped too Greg about that here here’s a little trivia question I’m going to give you a number and you you guys tell me what this is 3593 sorry let me write that down 3,592 93 okay that changes everything that is uh do we get any context context this is a golf show okay so golf h is this a golf topic oh yeah okay uh that is the let’s see I got to do some math here number of players who tried to qualify for the US Open not bad I believe that number is actually over 10,000 great great guess section sectional qualifiers I don’t the answer to that that is the number unless Patrick you want to guess that is the number of bogies made in the 2014 US Open I probably not but it is the number of days since Rory mooy’s last major championship Victory wow how D have gotten that how dare you guys not know that now was playing this week well don’t forget about that Patrick because I would like to remind you that in 2019 he finished T9 in 2020 he finished T8 in 2021 he finished t7 in 2022 he finished fifth in 2023 he finished second if he is going to improve and keep this streak alive Patrick there is only one position he can finish in and that streak that number will disappear Into Thin Air playoff loss it’s G be painful that would yeah I mean he’s kind of been talking about how he’s really leaned into the firm and fast conditions you think about young Rory mroy that Congressional US Open super wet just boat racing the field at Congressional whenever we got soft conditions back then it was uhoh watch out for Rory mroy and he’s been vocal about how he has he thought that he needed to change his mindset when it comes to some of those us opens because Rick before that string miscut in 18 miscut in 17 miscut in 16 something had to give and it was clearly the mindset and you see it with the results too so he’s so good right there there’s like a couple things you could nitpick about the ls in his tournament is something I’m going to Keen in on on those six to nine whole stretches maybe where he might not have it he might lose his swing a little bit and if he can manufacture score during those times he’ll be in with a chance come Sunday uh that that’s kind of like the one thing I’m really looking at for Rory mroy Greg that’s kind of the one I am worried about um I’m worried about the big number quite honestly right we talked about that a lot to start 2024 he has been better at avoiding that big number but it is sometimes lurking out there for Rory more than his I mean the short list of his peers is Xander Schley and Scotty schuffler so more than those guys and I worry that this place is going to be dishing them out yeah I mean in one part you could say there’s no hazards out here I mean there there’s one area of water that’s not in play maybe that helps him but um I think there’s going to be plenty big numbers to go around for the whole field yeah so but you know the one thing on the positive side and I just I think Rory’s so good heading into a week like this it’s important to focus on the positives um the thing that Rory mroy has gotten really good at and it has potentially you could make an argument at least at two majors that it has hurt his chances is utilizing a very conservative strategy uh I I think Rory compared to 2012 2014 Rory like you mentioned Patrick um his mindset and his style was extremely aggressive and I think he has learned to play a more conservative strategy I’m not sure that’s the best way for him to play every major but it certainly seems like the way to play this one maybe all that practice that he’s had playing a little more conservative uh is going to uh behoove him this week if he will so I I think it it doesn’t feel like a great Golf Course for Rory um on the surface but with his ability level his touch around the greens his Bunker play I think that stuff’s a little underrated at times um and his ability to hit it high could be extremely useful this week as well so I I think there are far more positives than negatives when it comes to Rory the man the modern man that Brooks kep go oh dang I screwed it up y muso would never the modern name that Rory mroy chases is Brooks one major championship behind it’s five for Brookie and Patrick the Putter’s been an issue a T45 the Masters a t26 at the the PGA Championship he’s done much better on on the live circuit but his two majors this year have been a little underwhelming are we expecting Brooks to get back on track I would think so I I I don’t love the setup at Valhalla for him getting to 21 under in a major championship that’s probably something he scoffed at to tell you the truth truth you want Brooks kep on a golf course where if you’re making far you are gaining ground on the field and that was not the case at Valhalla and so I think Pinehurst number two he’s talked about it a lot how he has real soft spot for this place because it’s the first place he ever contended in a major championship albeit very very distant he saw his name on the first page of the leaderboard he got the juices flown he liked the way he played in that final round finished inside the top five and the rest is kind of History so flashed a little form there at Houston finishing inside the top 10 I think he shot 6 five on Sunday which is certainly a positive it’s not like he shot 80 like Cameron Smith did which is uh kind of steered me in a different direction and even though the PGA Championship wasn’t great he was kind of there heading into the weekend to tell you the truth he battled back from a double bogey on 10 on Friday made a couple late uh birdies and then the putter got kind of poor so US Open record surprisingly fantastic firm fast difficult golf course you think that’s okay I have concerns about a short game to tell you the truth the putter hasn’t been great and I would like to have seen him flash a little more for him but Brooks kept g a major if you doubt him you’re kind of a dummy if you doubt him you’re kind of a dummy good that should be the title of his uh autobiography the golfer Greg that that I’ve been thinking the most about this week and most of this was spurred on by you is is Bryson dambo I entered the week thinking seems like a horrible spot for him then I started thinking what about what you said about how you uh trust that he will have a plan which I 100% agree with whether the plan is right or wrong he will have a plan and a strategy and then you talked about um you know maybe the ability to just kind of pull putter around the greens or the option that that that is possible and not having to have every short game shot in the world and I love I mean his form is is undeniably great and and I think that he is probably the golfer I’ve been warming on the most since since last week and I understand the concerns um on that side because you’re you’re feel this feels like a place where an artist is gonna shine and do really well someone who’s really creative it does not feel like the venue for a scientist um but I I do think there’s a fascinating way for Bryson to approach the golf course with a scientific mindset which um like we said on Monday Rick this could be putter heavy from off the green for Bryson and it could prove to be a great strategy uh the other assets that I really like is the ability to hit the ball high very similar to Rory mroy uh he will be able to I mean you talk about the Victor hland approach he can come in with some short clubs and he can hit a lot of greens of Regulation doing that I think his iron play has gotten a whole lot better which which is a a real positive um he seems focused he seems ready to go and the big question for me is can he handle the simp simply the speeds of the green but we saw him at Augusta National struggle with it and that s Saturday round it was pure he could not handle the speeds of the greens I think he learns from that um and I think he also has the advantage of being able to use the launch monitor here which could potentially help him out with that he did win at Wing foot with extremely fast greens as well so you know there’s a lot of PL there’s a lot of pluses and the pluses are really big there’s some question marks but I think there’s a way around it for Bryson I’m intrigued I’m I think he’ll be interesting no matter what okay um we are going to turn our attention to the Wagers which will allow us to talk about some more golfers and we will then release those oneandone selections for this week a lot of money presumably at the top we don’t know what the purse is yet but we’ll find out here in the next couple of days uh but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners have you heard of semag glue ties kmic monjaro apartment this could be dangerous let’s do it South Park the end of obesity new exclusive event now streaming exclusively on Paramount plus and we’re back Hatton at plus 110 we talked about it Monday Rick cam Smith has been struggling with his driver and he’s been struggling with his irons the BET here is twofold one this is going to remind cam Smith the home uh and something his creative genius is going to come to fruition he’s going to fall in love with this golf course and start hitting it better the other side of the coin is um T Hatton is going to get extremely frustrated blow a gasket and walk off the golf course who who breaks the club first Hatton or siuk Hatton I’ll take I’ll take plus I’ll play I’ll take plus 350 on Windom Clark yeah that’s that’s a that’s a great value pick Rick yeah it is it is borderline he’s borderline he’s already borderline on he is borderline the concept here is short game short game short game I hope we get an uptick from cam Smith um and I just I like that at at plus money plus 110 cam Smith over Terell Hatton uh speaking of Windam Clark I’ve decided to pick on him I have picked on him with Keegan Bradley minus 120 over Windam we’ve documented this Windam has he’s just he’s really struggling he really is um I I think there’s a lot of things going against him I think that Keegan is trending in the complete opposite direction which is a positive one he’s getting better and better um I I just think these are two guys going in different ways this is where uh Patrick already starting us off with not a matchup but a nationality we just let him get away with anything he wants he just keeps pushing the boundaries we keep accepting it so so tell us what you have got here Patrick it’s more or less a three ball okay if I said Alex noren over ludvig oberg and Tim Ving of the Corn fairy tour soon to be PJ tour member hash tour bound plus 210 you guys want to want to blank an eye uh blank a blind eye is is that the same blink Blind Eye no blink an eye that doesn’t make sense either yeah you wouldn’t blink an eye that’s turn a blind you turn a blind turn a blind eye there it is he’s the one that writes for a living Greg there’s a lot a lot going on that’s why we have editors yeah I actually have to I was ready phrase I was ready to praise him for his pronunciation of Tim Ving which is absolutely 100% correct and then he said he wanted to Blink a blind eye to be fair Rick you agreed that the saying was blink blink an eye yeah I wouldn’t blink an eye I don’t think that’s the saying is it oh is that not it I wouldn’t no Greg had it right it’s turn a blind eye yeah but there’s also like oh BL I wouldn’t blink an eye an eye I wouldn’t blink an eye oh bat ey Josh says you would bat and I that that makes that makes much more sense regardless Alex noran plus two10 nine top 25s in his last 10 Tim Ving I don’t think he has the chops to to compete with my guy former top 10 player in the world Alex noren and then ludvic oberg first US Open appearance miss the cut in 50% of his major championship starts I have questions about his short game honestly that that’s kind of the one concern and I’m getting plus 210 on noren who’s been super well rounded this year so I’m gonna take a a Tim Ving would describe himself as stubborn persistent and calm what it makes that that’s great for US Open tour bound oh this could be useful for this week uh oh his younger brother Charlie plays competitive table tennis oh no and he represented Sweden and played in the nation’s top League wow this is gonna pingpong all the pingpong you might like this one you’re a Rangers Fan aren’t you Sabers fan I like the Rangers though I root for them all right yeah his favorite teams include hv71 which is the hockey team he grew up playing for in Sweden and the New York Rangers his favorite athlete is Hockey Hall of Fame induct and fellow swed Nicholas Lindstrom how about that regarded as one of the greatest defenseman in NHL history yeah he played for the Red Wings phenomenal player phenomenal player great goal scor defenseman I thought it was gonna be Henrik lanquist so did I I did too when I started that sentence I was positive it was going to be Henrik lanquist yeah well good and know not crazy th this guy he has like he has like 10 bullet points in his buyout it’s very thorough we’ll get to the others at some other time um finishing position anybody we want any finishing position I wanton Frankie sappin top 40 plus 360 talked about him earlier this week Greg I think he’s the Real Deal saw him with the US Open last year he’s been great on the corn faery he will also be hashtag tour bounds before you know it Patrick please Xander shafley top 10 plus 125 he’s got eight straight major top 20s and we already listed off those us opens seven straight top 15 six of those have been top tens so you know he’s going to be on the first or second page of the leaderboard can do everything well great putter great head on his shoulders I think he contends yet again in a major championship so give me the top 10 Xander Schley attended scrips Ranch High School in San Diego California won the high school state golf title in 2011 Greg I am going with 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama to finish inside the top 20 uh I absolutely love this pick I love his game leads the PGA Tour and strokes gain around the green um he’s played in 11 us opens he’s made the cut in 10 of them and he has six top 20 finishes also played here in 2014 finished t35 uh I think we’re looking for we’re looking ahead to a great week for hiim Yama Hideki Matsuyama was the first player from Japan to win The Masters and received the prime minister’s award in Japan following it Hideki Matsuyama top 20 plus 140 Frankie sappin plus 360 top 40 no Hideki top 20 sappin top 40 Xander top 10 two separate outrights there is some overlap here Greg you and I share our first outright please tell the people what it is it’s Scotty sheer but Rick you never put Scotty sheffler in here even when you think he’s going to win what what has happened I think the honestly I think I’ve been spooked by Patrick a lot I just like I felt like I used to have a really good pulse on how to put these boards together and then Patrick got hot and I got scared and I started freaking out and I’m just trying to not not be just just freezing in his shadow you know and I and I and I just said I I think Scotty is going to win it let me see if I can catch a catch a dub here and um that’s what I’ve done well I like it um because I think it’s very likely that he wins that’s why you’re only getting three to one on it we can win with Scotty as I did last week and still lose on this grid so we don’t like that very much um but at the same time I don’t like giving them away but just not going to this isn’t a free space here I don’t want to give away 10 bucks so we’re going to put a little bit on Scotty um best player in the world and if he has anything to say about it which as we discussed earlier he may not if he has anything to say about it he wins this week yeah just to be clear I mean I I I we’ve talked about this ad nauseum this week I think he’s the best player in the world I think this golf course will allow him to be very strategic which he’s very good at and um he seems Unstoppable and even every golfer is I mean Rory mcky mentioned it Xander I mean these gu they’re they know they’re they know they’re in trouble okay um Greg Please Release your other outright please my other outright is the second favorite Xander shley at 10 to one I love what he’s done in US opens I think there’s a very good chance that he’s there on Sunday uh with an opportunity to win in he’s gotten longer he’s gotten straighter his iron play has been very good and if it isn’t the way it wasn’t at Memorial last week as Patrick pointed out um he’s got plenty in the tank when it comes to short game and putting to keep him around he’s built for this kind of test and I think he belongs on the card Scotty at three to one Xander at 10 to one for Greg I’m taking Scotty at 3 to1 Matt Fitzpatrick at 50 kind of a hunch I think he I know he played great last week I think that he’s starting to figure everything out and much like I throw uh Scotty Bryson Victor Fitzpatrick Salat Tores some of these guys where they I I trust them to be the most prepared for this test um so I’m taking a guy out of that bucket I’m taking Matthis Patrick at 50 to one now Patrick your first wager uh is a market without Scotty Sheffer everyone else remains who is that selection I’m going with karawa 12 to1 we hit on this bet last week some variation of it I I I’m not sure if you guys mention it but I’m seeing the board so clearly right now I’m not I’m not blinking any eyes uhuh I’m seeing green green Green so karawa 12 to1 without Scotty Sheffer yeah we mentioned he he’s going to be a US Open Champion one day that is going going to be a fact this Championship was made for him and I think that very well could be Sunday I was say it might be Sunday yes we gave you we gave you you your wow we gave you your due on Sunday we were very proud of you in the black Josh texted me Josh you did it Josh is supposed to be like the Supreme Court he’s not supposed to have any like leanings he’s supposed to just be like completely neutral not supposed to text you for good job I I didn’t text back your mom or anything like that gave him a gave him a love on it I think that was it I’m gonna have to look into this there might be some collusion happening behind the scenes that is colum morawa plus 12 to1 without Scotty sheffler that’s without Scotty Market Patrick has also dipped his toe into the without Scotty Rory morawa and Schley market so without the Big Four he has chosen whom AI matama 25 to1 all the reasons Greg said he can hit the ball a mile in the air as well really good on golf courses where uh greens and regulation are very difficult to hit best short game player in the world and once Greg kind of put out there into the UN Universe the possibility of a perfect grid I’ve become obsessed with it absolutely obsessed and so this is away yes even with my best bet that is coming yes that I can cash three different out rghts in one week yes so quickly so so Josh go to the Best Bets Patrick has selected uh Scotty schu to win as his best bet which is the extra 50 that Josh gives us so just to be clear so I’m gonna need you to flip back here Josh in a second Patrick could he would if so so Scotty winning would cash him his best bet Colin finishing second to Scotty would win the Sheffer best bet and his first outright and then Hideki finishing uh third presumably behind Scotty and Colin or Scotty Colin and then any combination of Xander and Rory so he keki could finish Fifth and still have this workout imagine if that worked out with that leaderboard would be like Beck Patrick Patrick would win that outright as well well he could also get Xander of course uh to finish inside the top 10 during that and then as long as Alex noren beats out ludvig and Tim Ving Ving Patrick has a path to a perfect grit and one other thing I’d like to patch you on the back for here Patrick is um and you’ve taken the creativity to a new level and you have not settled for Scotty sheffler at the same time uh you still win if Scotty wins which yeah well done look I welcome you guys I would always put Scotty in the outright Market but you’re only getting 10 bucks I welcome you guys to come over to the best bet camp where Josh has given me 40 extra bucks to lay on Scotty Sheffer yeah you know what else is cool about that it is the it is the best bet it is it literally is you always you are always sweating Sunday afternoon on the back knot always oh it’s awesome I love it all right back to Best Bets Josh I took uh Patrick Klay to miss the cut plus 160 I think he’s playing poorly the US Open has been uh his worst major I do not trust him I think he goes home early and Greg finish us off here with your best bet okay what if I were to tell you that you could get a top 10 player in the world to finish in the top 30 and get plus money on it I sign me up pal sign me up well we have Russell Henley to finish who is a top 10 player in the world Russell Henley top 30 plus 130 uh he checks all these boxes he’s extremely accurate I mean just listen to these numbers I I think it’s important to highlight these we’re talking about got a top 30 here he’s fifth in driving accuracy on tour he’s 36 in Strokes gain approach which has gotten better over the last month he’s 21st in Strokes gain around the green uh he is fourth in three putt avoidance he’s 13th tied with Scotty sheffler in approach putt performance he’s gained Strokes in F and five out of six approach the green around the green and putting and he’s played in 10 US opens um and three out of his last four have been top 25 checks every box russell Henley top 30 plus 130 he is a top 10 player in the world in the good pick good pick in the without Sheffer Schley Rory Windam Victor Market is what he is a top 10 player in the world at those are the best bets and they’re brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook make every moment more and gentlemen we have one more moment and it’s arguably the biggest moment it’s arguably the most anticipated moment it is the moment that we release the one andone selections and I will tell you that five of six of us are lone wolvves oh oh oh oh except you Greg you’ve been duped you’ve been duped no Kyle did not very funny hilarious that’s very funny Greg has been duped Now Greg if I tell you you’ve been duped who do you want to be duped by well I think there’s only one person who could do any duping okay and that would be Kyle Porter uh but I have been duped by as a player competing in the field by Bryson Des Shambo who I toiled with I have gone like you Rick back and forth I took you from off the fence to on the fence I have also been myself on the fence so you’ve joined me there you did not go with him for one and done I did now the really fascinating aspect of this is I’m the one sitting here with all the hardware right I got the I got the yellow Jersey I got the metal next to my name on YouTube I’m I’m sitting way up high in this perch and the humility with all the humility and I went out and took a huge risk that I didn’t have to take uh and I took Bryson and I hope it pays off and if it doesn’t pay off and it pays off for Patrick I before I saw Patrick put that name in the rundown I almost switched to his pick almost two or three times once I saw Patrick put it in there I said I’m sticking with it honorable good on you because that is Honorable uh Greg and Kyle have both selected brys and D Shambo our highest earner and our lowest earner will ride in tandem this week to Pinehurst oh man Kyle has been the kiss of death on every single pick that he has put in all year long and he will try to take down Greg with him Greg will try to Mush the mush I will lift the mush and defeat it that is Bryson D Shambo uh I chose Brooks Brooks Kea Greg I I kind of thought you might take Bryson so I said well I got to find a way to make up some room I’m going to take I’m going to take Brooks here here I was um you know I was probably going to take a lift guy one way or another and then uh I thought I thought Brooks was my chance of being solo I was correct but I don’t know if I’m as happy about it I can tell you right now um I should have reversed my picks with the PGA in the US Open I know it I know it now but we’re riding this way can’t can’t change history now it now has taken Colin morawa Mark has taken ludvig oberg in just his third major championship and his first US Open ever and Patrick who is the only one who could catch Greg this week unless the USGA announc is a hundred million doll purse which I doubt who have you selected Patrick first let me commend Greg on a fantastic pick last week with colum morawa I know it was chalk but sometimes eating the chalk is the good thing to do so kudos to you our faithful leader I love chalk like uh like Greg this was a a pick I went back and forth with I haven’t used a live golfer yet this year so I feel like I’m leaving or outside of Bryson so I’m leaving a little bit on the board and I’d written down a couple weeks ago Cameron Smith no matter what on a sticky pad like dra Kevin CER and Draft Day fonte Mack no matter what wow and you know what he ended up going with vonte Mack the linebacker from Ohio State but then I realized spoiler alert the Browns are a horrible organization horrible organization they’re picking number one for a reason you take the best player available and I believe the best player available for me is Hideki Matsuyama your 2024 US Open Champion I look great in yellow Greg I can’t wait uh for this time next week for everyone else to see that really hoping for like a third place finish out of him yeah technically yes oh but Josh o oh gosh uh this is gonna be tough I’m gonna have to think about this later too many too many cheering pool cheering sections for me this is this is when you out your ideal leaderboard I’m gonna win somehow I don’t know how though you have 10 you have 10 fantasy football teams you have every player and you’re playing against every player in the league literally you’re like ah that touchdown helped me and killed me all right for those just listening here’s the recap Greg has 13 and a half million he’s got Bryson Patrick has 12.1 million he’s gone with Hideki Matsuyama Mark has 8.7 million he’s gone with ludvic oberg Josh has 8.1 million he’s gone with Colin Mory Kawa Rick that’s me has 7.6 million ion I’ve gone with Brooks Kea Kyle has 3.3 million and has gone with Bryson D sham let’s ride let’s ronos with country that’s right is it gonna be Steelers country Steelers country that’s right uh they call themselves Steelers Nation but I will say there have been some murmur of calling it the Rust Belt 1. How convient the timing of Jons withdraw. It was after he had his press conference. He is using it as an excuse cause he knew he wasnt going to make the cut at Pinehurst. I can see over par winning. The players are saying Pinehurst has its teeth just like it did the other years expect when Martin Kaymer embrassed them at -9. I bet Jon will tee it up in Nashville next Friday. He doesnt want to take his responsiblities and play here. It might be the year a LIV player wins Pinehurst. Jackson Suber will be on peacock. Jons group is one of the afternoon groups on Peacock. Jon hasnt had a great 2024 when it comes to majors. He cant take the pressure from running away to LIV. I thought Greg was going to faint during the Jon discussion. Patrick is trying to hit the BIG BUCKS this week for sure. I used Dean Burmester this week. I think only Patrick could dethrone Greg. Wyndham Clark won 3.6 million last year. I could see 3.8-4 going to first place.

  2. At the 1973 US Open at Oakmont, Johnny Miller shot a 8 under par 63 final round to win. Next year in 1974, some complained that the USGA had intentionally made the course setup impossible in response. Hale Irwin became the eventual champion with a score of 7 over par. This is also known as the "Massacre at Winged Foot." Could we see something similar this year? To prove it wasn't a fluke, Irwin went on to win 2 more US Opens in his career, last one being in 1990 at 45 years old. The oldest ever US Open champion. I believe that record still stands to this day.

  3. The big question is whether the best ball striker this week wins. If the course is set up properly it should rely less on lucky bounces over 72 holes.

  4. These 3 talking golf is like Ewan McGregor's character in Big Fish, just all-around good stuff! "The Russ Belt" is elite, trumps "Mr. Unlimited"

  5. Just curious has anyone picked Sepp Strakka for the one and done? I haven’t been able to keep up and am just really looking into it for next season but what a sleeper steal he would’ve been in some big tournaments this year.
