time session two of the 2024 Australian opens day two at the broad Beach bows club and we are looking forward to this one two winners in their first session Gary ball up against against Darren King an all Victorian battle one from yville foots gray and the other one from dennington out near warnable valbo is my name and joining me he was enjoying that aob balls introduction there because some exponents of or some fine work of his was shown on that ad Barry Lester joins me yeah good morning Val and spectacular day here on the Gold Coast at Broad Beach bows club and looking forward to this game looks like a really nice character does Allan I think we’ll get a bit of life out of him on the Green and always good to see another Lefty out there and uh my mate Gary former teammate of mine and all around good bloke very consistent performer in uh a lot of tournaments around Australia so hopefully it’s a high quality match mate looking forward to it and Gary ball with a big win over Alan Sullivan of Ky in his first round 21 to4 but Darren King sorry 21 to 14 Darren King over Doug Stewart of West Tamworth Sports 21-4 so the ladder is it stands these two are on top and the winner of this contest will go a very long way to determining their spot in The Knockout stages of the 2024 Australian Open men’s singles so interesting start here fairly long length chosen by Darren King who is using the gray henselite Cruisers and the red and white era Optimus is what Gary ball is using yellow paddles for Gary blue for Darren and and polar opposite to what we saw last game Val both players electing to play the inside of the rink versus what we saw last game Jimmy coming out of the blocks dominating early from the ditch side might be just one of those things that they preferred that they in the rollup that they saw that they liked the inside of the rink it is traditionally always the narrower side of the rink when it comes to the last rink EG the ditch rink but on these beautiful greens here you’ll notice you’re getting somewhere around that 7 to8 ft of draw on a 15sec deck pretty much anywhere here out of the four greens at BR Beach have a feeling we’re going to have a really close contest here didn’t have too many really cracking matches yesterday A lot of them were fairly substantial margins the last match of the day was very good between Glenn Lynch and Bruce Hughes but this one I have a feeling between the two winners of this morning’s matchups of section 127 we’re going to see something absolutely special yeah different uh different surface that they’ve they going to play on now and um still the same direction but it’s never easy especially when you’ve got a lot of people around if you got a bit of a network around you you got to sort of stay focused if you go off and have a coffee or something to eat and it’s easy to get distracted by all the action happening around here the Marquee I just went down to the Marquee there you couldn’t move in there absolutely froing people buying balls and clothes and getting there some of even ladies I was chatting to they getting all their clothes set for the week they all want to wear the same uniforms so it’s great Gary ball there finishing Jack high at 9:00 but yeah there’s plenty to do and that’s the the beauty of this event if you’re throwing in the uh the rematch on Friday night with the Marquee and and now with the big decking you come down grab a coffee something to eat and take in the quality action 100% so one ball left to come for both this is Darren King’s final of this opening end and he’s on a pretty good track he’s done well Jack but how close is it to Gary balls we get an indication here measure it is so Gary ball as you can see those red and white balls they look quite large quite confident there at least a size four he always used large balls as Gary so final bowl of the opening end let’s see what Gary can do he’s the chair of selectors for the Victorian State men’s team never has to pay for a coffee or beer does Gary now he holds that role which I’m sure he’s not unhappy about for sure so just missing underneath let’s see what we adjudicate here very interesting measure Darren King left-hander rocking the long sleeves pretty cool outfit dennington I’ve never had the pleasure so one day I’ll put it on the the list to get down to dennington I’ve got some coaching clinics coming up uh I do in Mount Gambier and I might have to drop in on the way through yeah drive down there Barry yeah looking forward to why not getting to mount gambir in a couple of months and going to go visit the Blue Lake I will haven’t decided whether I fly and Adelaide go to mount gamber in back or I go to Melbourne and mount gamb in back so so that is one to Darren to start proceedings he’s on the board first the Jets I love that bowling clubs upgrading their slogans upgrading their logos upgrading the you know the image you you got to be marketing and promoting it’s a pretty cool outfit and it’s great to see clubs reaching out to either a local marketing company or working with the state or national bodies to upgrade your your image and you’re collateral it’s good to see it’s great to see isn’t it and I’ll be honest Val it is sad to see the the other side of it too I go around to some clubs and they probably haven’t um looked at it at that just yet looked at upgrading their logos and uh modernizing uh how they present their uniforms and present their the image of the club in this modern day with with really good fun and you know exciting ways to promote your Club through social Med than that and if you ever want some help just reach out to um if you’re in Victoria reach out to BS Australia BS Vick whatever and they will help they will help put something together for you and I love that part of my role working with bows Australia as a regional bows manager going at the clubs and what was your region I had Gibs land so Peninsula and Gibs land and I caught up with some members from a club recently parked out bide Melbourne there and I remember we went in there I went in there years ago when we up upgraded a few things and got some grants and that and that club’s flying now so yeah always keep looking forward don’t you you do so bit of a wayward start of this second end option of getting the jack is well and truly there and Gary ball holding sway at this stage and he looks like he’s out on a pretty good line here as we see this ball arcing back have a look at this Barry leer yeah nice shot the weight is has been nonon perfect he’s got them both out on a pretty good track but or weight I should say yeah just as you see there Val the the left side of the rink the bow of Gary balls uh you can see pretty much that it’s the full face of the balll pointing to the bottom of the screen that gives you an indicator that the the Green’s not only fairly fast but it’s drawing wide because you because of the sharpness of the angle the balls on so it’s a good indicator for when you’re you’re in your roll up or you’re finding your way into a game early on the sun has been baking this green Barry especially this rink here and have a look at how this one turns back he might be on for the Jack or his own bow it’s good shooting from Gary so Darren King with it all to do down three needs to find something with his last Lindsay gr watching from Portland in Victoria to have your company wherever you’re watching around the world been there I’ve actually been there up the road great Place Portland Bowling Club overlooking the ocean what a view is it windy the time I was there no it was it was very pleasant Gary ball Smooth release the Arville foot gray of course foot gray or Western Bulldogs they carry the Bulldogs logo as well the Bulldogs theme yep Harville foots great is on Francis straight right across from Lucky Williams who’s controlling our pictures right across from his Lacrosse Club there you go foots gray lacrosse if you a lacrosse fan are you the they’re also the Bulldogs oh beautiful love that that continuity in in either the township or the or the suburb so I believe this will probably be a three they might measure for the fourth three kicked out we will have a measure for the fourth Carri just shooting that one a little bit long well Gaz has started well he’s definitely off the leash early in this match how long have you been waiting to say that B I got a couple couple more to go hopefully they get better but anyway it’s it’s good to see that is a four wow four good bowls too not only with three really close but one down the line and out the back so Gary ball on the board and it’s a maximum and of course Pez if you want to get involved in some rookie rollers you can get 25% off kits and a free wedge with each kit purchased on the bows Australia e store so shop. bows.com Au is where you can grab those it’s such a good Initiative for kids to get involved in the sport or if you’re an adult you just want to have a little bit of fun why not it’s like ski ball almost with the wedge yeah every Club should have one and if you can’t afford it which is um you know a potential at your Club reach out to some sponsors try and get a grant it’s a kit that must belong in your clubhous uh especially if you’ve got some families coming down to enjoy some social bows or Barefoot balls great for the kids to get out there and use some modified equipment so yeah make sure you you get one of those kits and just knowing have that for school programs and various other kids or Juniors that are at your Club um modified equipment is definitely the future when we try to be fully inclusive for everyone in the community to take up this game or at least give the game a go so well on balls austral great great initiative has been around for a while now the the modified equipment I remember we had a meeting years ago looking at ways we can help more kids get involved in bows and we looked at other sports and you look at tennis and golf and everyone Cricket they got modified so y make sure you grab your rookie rollers kit bag yep so bows.com au/ purchaser rookie rollers that’s where you need to go the easto you can get the backpacks Gary ball right down the spine with the front two as you can see there Line’s not an issue and Darren King so he’s played the first end in this Direction all four balls forand switches to and play the decent end switches to the back end because Gary’s created the pressure from the front two and he and he’s unfortunately sprayed to as a result I think he’s got to get back to what he knows I think he resets here goes back to the forehand just tries to draw something close W this is another Sensational uh bow from Gary ball interesting here interesting I don’t mind this V okay so it’s within the rules you can actually visit the head after your second bow but you have to ask for permission first from the marker and I think he’s just trying to settle a little bit here I like that you know um instead of fighting playing a couple of rough balls and trying to fight it and and let it own you he’s just taking a bit of a walk and a bit of a breath and trying to get that out of his system three very good bows from Gary ball Darren King has a lot to do how’s this track this is looking like it may drop under and that’s okay Val he’s Line’s pretty good that’s a worker he couldn’t work with anything of the first two but that all that needs is fourt of weight and it’s going to get at least second shot so he’s got to grab that and and run with it the thing here for Gary ball is that he hasn’t created a Target at all that’s right yep let’s see what he can do here he’s covering count and cover maybe not sure that one’s going to count so not a huge correction required especially the quicker the green it’s only just a little bit more takeaway speed maybe step into it a little bit more try and hit that line may just count so how’s this one come out it’s coming is it going to get there it might join so there you have it so he’s cut it back might just be the one now it is so a brilliant final bowl from Darren King but he doesn’t want to have to continue to do that it’s a 5-1 lead to Gary ball of the araville foots gray this sight of the very first Australian Open back in 2005 Barry leester yeah they did a tremendous job 2005 first Australian Open as we uh caught up with Jay globits the other night the bows coordinator here his brother winning the first Australian Open singles title beating Bruce Anderson and the men’s pairs I remember that too Billy cornells and Michael wils picking up the trophy there the lady singles I reckon it was Roma dun Roma dun won the lady singles and you’d be right Barry if Roma’s uh tuning in this week get a Roma and Michael wils backed it up with Billy cornells and and um I’ll get the third player to win the triples as well I should know I was in that game actually that’s terrible B oh really come on B I reckon it was the great the great one of my favorite players of all time Kevin Walsh Kevin Walsh Michael wils and Bill cornells uh what an Australian Open that was sets play back then not a lot of people’s favorites sets play we’ve gone back we’ve gone more traditional these days and a lot of people do prefer it as a and I know a lot of people it’s an unpopular opinion I actually quite like the sets play aspect of bows sometimes I know a lot of people absolutely hate it that’s fair but I think coming from someone that loves his tennis I love the ability to mentally refresh and to be able to say okay you know what I didn’t win that set I can start again where level pegging and then we can come back to it and sets play has been often the reason why a lot of some of the world’s best have won titles and you look back at the world bows indoor championships in 2023 Aaron Sheriff versus Andrew Kelly Andrew Kelly was all over Aaron Sheriff but sets play was one of the main reasons why Aaron Sheriff was able to come out on top yeah no doubt and you can look at it the other side as well EXA Aaron Sheriff might have got a couple more ends in and just started to refresh himself and go from there we just saw Darren refresh after his first two deliveries um so you can have a refresh during a during an end and during a game um the unfortunate thing about sets play is Karen Murphy in 2005 the first Australian Open won her first set 22 to1 yeah lost her second set 56 so she’s winning yeah and 27 she’s winning 27 to6 or 27 to7 and loses the game and at 20 22 to1 or that’s or 22 to7 whatever it was you actually won a 21 up match in that set yeah which is cruel in a way so the only way you can get around it in that circumstance is is if if it’s one set a piece you go on shot so Karen wins 22-2 then loses 56 it’s one set each but Karen wins on shots yeah which is again it’s it’s fair but it’s also a cruel way to lose isn’t it so it’s it’s it’s a hard it’s a hard argument because I can see both for and against you can lose a game of uh you can win a game of tennis and lose on games too can’t you yeah well the the match that breaks my heart the most the 2019 Wimbledon final Roger federa won every single statistic more games uh more points more everything over no jovic but jovic won three tie breaks there you go okay Darren King needs Jack he gets it NE he makes three well what a shot that’s the shot of the match so far Darren King had to work up under the front one and around that one on the middle there perfect weight chars it for three next minute 54 and again was down I reckon he would have been down at least two here look at that for shot wonderful left hand is forand on the Northern side here at Broad Beach Bulls that’s that’s a quality shot that’ll that’ll give him a confidence booster now what I’m really Keen to see here is if he puts this forehand away coming in this direction his best balls in this direction going by my stats that I’ve written down here Val from an effective rate is that his his backand in this direction has been His Highest effective so if he opens up on the forehand here n I’d be very very surprised if I could whisper in his ear I’d say Darren you’re you’re you’re effective balls have all been on the back and in this direction I love how you actually whispered that too so why wouldn’t you open up on the back end let’s see yes he does well done good work so when’s your fortune telling business starting up bz no fortune telling mate 29 years of experience just hopefully putting it to good use mate but I want I wish sometimes in this game B I had a crystal ball I give you the tip oh my God it’s hard to read your opposition sometimes and hard to read the way the game shapes up from day to day but but as you know covering Sport and covering balls now for quite a few years it’s just consistency isn’t it yeah that’s exactly right and you sort of when you do this for a long period of time like when I first started I didn’t really know the patterns of balls but you sort of pick it up after a while yeah and I think you’ve done really well I think um even since World bows last year and hearing you on the without bias and that now um kudos to you for putting in the time and effort to you know study the game and study the players and all that and you come in so prepared and how you know the ins and outs of the sport so quickly uh it’s hats off to you mate because if I tried doing that a sport uh that I don’t know particularly much about I would be expecting I wouldn’t be it’ take me years so what also helps that there’s a lot of people around that are willing to share the information with you and are willing to help like sitting with you throughout is going to sound like a Little Love Fest here on ringside life but you know sitting with baz across two weeks of the World Championships you learn more than anything you could ever possibly do and I had to do the bowl show last year and I don’t know how I got myself red into doing the expert tips every week but literally everything you told me on ringside was just regurgitated on the onto the bow show uh split salary IE we’re on a split celery yeah we are now got Colin Bray watching on from henville great summary of yesterday’s play he’s back he couldn’t comment yesterday I’m not sure what was going on I was having withdrawals from Colin Bray not being able to count our lost Jacks so we’re just trying to figure out who’s got the shot here it is a measure so Gary ball in to the backand Jack length around about that 27 M length here he’s looking for Jack movement down the line 2T can make three ideally if he is tied he does hit that last bow of Darren he is in the ballpack oh my God and he’s just missed tight had Christina christic standing right behind us and alen F so Gary ball just missing that ball half a ball tight but as I said he was in the ballpark and it is a good game so far all both players have settled now they’re just finding their groove you can see the weight control with all delivery so far either on or beyond the Jack so Barry that’s two bad puns I can get on board with I’ve got a couple more to go I I don’t want to give them away too early I’ve thought of some but probably some of them aren’t suitable for rigside well when you’ve got a last night Nam ball and a last name King there’s a fair bit to work with there isn’t there I was probably yeah the the ball one was probably the one that I was thinking of but my mind’s in the gutter more than anything else so I’ll have to leave that so Gary ball shifting over to the forehand this time looking to dislodge Darren King’s shot ball sit it for to tr the Jack Smooth release works hard on his delivery does Gary ball not a world missing so Darren King started to flex his muscle here he’s brought the Cavalry now we’re starting to go somewhere this is good this is good so one and we set up five a p after five ends it’s all fives here and we spoke about at the start of the end Darren he shaped up on that backand had uh pretty effective end three out of four real good balls and if he didn’t nail that three on end four which I think we can put an asteris next next two B if he didn’t nail that he was possibly down 81 at that that point cuz he was down three or at least two and of course Tuesday night June 11 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time the next Bow’s Australia and Club map webinar philanthropic funding and Australian Sports Foundation covering information on bequest and gifting programs utilizing the a Australian Sports Foundation to collect tax deductible donations finishing up with a Q&A scan that QR code to register your club’s interest and it’s such a great initiative to help the development of CLS all around the country so well done to Darren King here his best Bowl for the game well it was a clutch Bowl put it that way was on his forehand in this direction TR the jack for three and he says you know what even though that was a really good ball I’m just still going to start up here on the back end now I just want to touch on this is the biomechanics this is the the muscle memory of things he’s now consistently bowling on his backand and he’s getting Rhythm so in this in the other direction four on the back end that’s six bows in a row on the back end just getting that muscle memory going getting into the rhythm of just playing the same delivery and as I’ve mentioned the previous game a couple of times the forehand and backhand they are two different deliveries like using two different golf clubs so it’s good to see Darren really getting some rhythm going now Darren as Darren holds two but Gary ball says well that’s enough of that I’m so of course going to sit that for one proud partners of the Australian Open and arob balls the largest manufacturer of the most accurate bows ever made more models more sizes more grips and over 65 colors as he’s played with a bit of weight here oh Darren King is warming up ladies and gentlemen he is and of course Arrow innovating the game for tomorrow that is beautiful forehand Swinging with weight what I liked about that weight from Darren there he would have stayed on out the back so he’s in control of his touch now as Gary ball tries to put it back pulls up short looks to be probably a couple down so this match has warmed up really nicely both feeling each other out three of the five ends so far been won by Darren King of course dropping a big maximum on n two to get Gary ball on the board Darren King now stalking it he on a good track doesn’t want any connection on Gary Ball’s front one oh he’s oh he’s worked off it nicely and he’s gone into almost a front Hopper so he still holds three cuz he’s turned that front one out of Gary’s that’s a dream head for for Darren King holding shot and not much of a Target but Gary ball has the T at the bottom of the screen will he come in with a wrecking ball here no he won’t he just try and dead draw it thought he’d get the big big stick out there and well it might be a wrecking ball of sorts if he can affect the count let’s see what he can do he’s not far away here Gary ball that’s a big attempt back to one good effort and again these recovery bows they might not win you the end but they can essentially score you two or three it it shows to me both players second game in they’re in Good Touch couple of ends just to get a feel for it and the reason being you saw Darren play that beautiful weighted bow there what I love about this bowl is I feel it was still going to just probably stay on the rink so it was going to be handy out the back so that’s a very good confident touch shot and then Gary backs it up with a nice shot to save a number so that just shows both players are feeling it at the moment 65 is the score Barry and we are none the wiser as to who the form player is they’re both filling each other out and this is a this is a wonderful contest we alluded to the fact that it might be the closest ringside Live Match that we’ve had throughout this Australian Open so far and it’s proving to live up to that yeah we sensed that didn’t we early on we just had I think both players match up pretty well and you see what they’ve done first game both come out with good wins and I’ve seen a lot of Gary ball over the years he’s just a steady performer helped him a little bit with his technique really always Keen to improve sent me some video videos over time just asking me to have a look look at his delivery and it really looks really nice at the moment he’s definitely shortened his step a little bit see it’s trying to compact it a little bit more take a lot of um room for error out and yeah he seems to be getting away really nice so I’m really hoping this one can go down to the wire and both players can keep performing well got Brett spur on board get A8 he’s uh called me Snelly there John Snell shout out to John Snell turns 90 this September it’s a good Innings legend of the game Gary ball forehand again needs a clear run his weight’s good would have been Jack High there just shaving the front so that’s now that’s good from Darren King I like this he’s just he’s he’s a couple of meters off the mat he’s showing some good strong body language he’s communicating with the mar marker you know they’re all little signs that he’s really comfortable now he’s he’s and and the opposite of that is anyone that looks uncomfortable is usually really static really still and not saying anything so he he’s he’s moving around he looks comfortable and he’s uh really starting to own this backand that’s a great shot So currently holding three or at least two still room for Gary ball to certain himself into this head but yeah he seemed to have all the momentum before and was on the verge of an 8-1 lead at least since then Darren King has been on song what has Gary ball done there well he secured shot yeah so who’s actually on top of the ladder in this section Val uh Darren is Darren W 1214 this morning Gary won 2114 so these are the two winners from this morning’s matches so if Gary wins this he’ll Dethrone Darren of that title he will so this is an opportunity to get back the lead here for Gary ball Gary ball forehand again he’s done pretty well here H that’s great shooting another lead change marab Bron who’s done this many times before very good at her job holds those two yellow paddles a loft and we get yet another lead change third one of the match so far after seven ends we sit at 76 Jack stays up yeah that’s where we are we’re getting a beautiful angle when I say we me me you and uh and H sorry and lock um of Gary Ball’s delivery um we can see the ball getting released especially from the back end this side just coming out silk and that’s a great sign especially early on in a day play or a tournament you want to you want to have a sound technique and sometimes I go to tournaments and I just see sometimes a bowler get them away good and just looking really comfortable in their technique and I’ll say like when we go to a BPL or something they look like they’re in touch you can see it after day one as well yeah and uh you watched this how smooth this comes out Gary’s really worked hard on his technique and low good bending both knees beautiful that ball upright lovely gets it away at 60° gets in behind the ball that really helps your weight control too so just missing narrow on that occasion got his lead leg out of the way as well so good on Gary like I know I’ve mentioned about his technique a bit just because I have worked with him a little bit and and players go through those just like any sport they go through those ups and downs with technique and stuff and then you see Darren’s just got that nice release as well so both players good techniques and so far playing quite well that one’s not one of Darren’s best ones but still a good line not quite getting the weight so we’re at Green fall here we are so this is a bit of a solitary green because the other three are in line but it’s amazing how we have the the three greens and then the fourth one wraps around the club it’s such a great setup and have people up on the deck taking it in and they look they look like they’re very stressed out up there don’t they V not in the slightest B they look so content and relaxed it’s a beautiful day and Gary ball takes shot back so he’s starting to try and get his own bit of momentum back we see that in singles it swings a lot looking forward to seeing how this one transpires because both of them been in good neck yeah so what what we’ve experienced there see we see Darren’s ball pulling up short as the nend gets longer which is this is maximum length you obviously have to go wider and where Darren’s going it just wouldn’t have been walked on this morning it hasn’t been uh no one’s gone up and down that section of the green and he’s just pulled up a couple of yards short there’s no doubt it wouldn’t be as compacted that grass out there so I would be nearly suggesting he switches to the forehand where he would know the weight where it’s been walked on where he’s played the majority of his balls so so this is an interesting Bowl here because can tie things up he’s gone with the backhand again so continued with it and this one is looking tight he’s going out into territory that just hasn’t been touched yet and and that’s the result three bad balls whereas he could have played full hand draw work under his own but that’s uh that’s the battle he’s faced at the moment if there’s a long end just playing balls out into that untouched territory so one more to Gary ball he moves ahead 86 that’s after eight ends it’s the second time in this match that he’s won two ends on the bounce of course the right line baz which you’ve featured on a couple of times BS Australia’s official podcast you can listen to that on Apple Spotify and Google 95 episodes we’ve done oh be cutting the cake soon mate yep raising the bat yeah I remember we had little cupcakes without bias cupcakes many years ago for our 100th episode me Jack Evan might need uh might need to get some the right line cupcakes although as the sole Host this year it might just be me eating them on my lonesome I thought you’d be getting some crosss maybe any junk food maybe some celebratory KFC Gary ball forehand on a string it’s like a yo-yo at the moment can’t miss his line he’s loving that forehand but just missing his his weight so Darren needs to avoid it he’s going to creep under big bowling family Gary ball and his sons Chris and Nelson great fellas great kids well they’re not kids anymore but I’ve known them since they were and all love uh getting out there and giving it a go balls seeming to run on a little bit Gary ball yeah almost the top heat of the day now usually around about 1 or 2:00 what do you reckon the green would be running at now a it’ be 16 now yeah it’s beautiful absolutely beautiful little bit of cloud around no wind still and Darren needs to come in from there bit higher but that’ll do for two so long end where he failed last end on a really long end and he’s bounced back here Gary’s rolled a long length thinking well hopefully Darren fails again but so far Darren’s fought back the the head and holding two Gary ball clear run and he’s got this clear run he hung on no just drifting the speed of the green proving to be UND doing yet again let’s see what he can do with his last Darren King trying to get himself back on the board first the double figures is always a little mental win and at the moment Gary ball is the one that is close this one is just overdone a little bit so one more left in the tank for both combatants out there on the map yeah remembering this time limit as well so the respot the time limiting there’s a lot going on this countdown clock there b yeah the players are they just got to monitor everything as they go hour and 35 to go can go quick if you’re visiting the head a lot and last thing you want to do is not be able to play out a game it’s it has happened a couple of times and it can prove costly for sure makes you sick in your stomach it does we feel especially if you lose and you haven’t completed a game oh it’s a very nasty feeling to know what could have been so Darren asking the question and it’s one so it’s just a matter of staying away here from Gary’s nearest ball so yes playing backand and also doesn’t want to be too aggressive either doesn’t want to turn anything up yeah that’s definitely running on now isn’t it B good observation mate it’s and he doesn’t touch it believe this will just stay at one has it flopped in now for a second possibly don’t think so it’s either it’s one and a measure they’ll survey it and just the one so he ends that run of two ends on the bounce for Gary Bal to Darren King and it’s 87 after nine ah gorgeous day here broad Beach Bulls Sunday plenty people around out and about yep beautiful day for some bows to be up here on the go coast and of course the AO proudly supported by events go Coast through tourism and events Queensland thank you for everything that they do you know who the locals are don’t you they wearing singlets and yeah and then you’ve got some people wearing hoodies yeah you know the ones that are from Melbourne or Sydney or even tazzy that’s for sure yeah it’s gorgeous day gorgeous weather really with sported so far and the forecast looks good too it’s 12:30 local time here how many entries in the mega bowl last night all 128 B wow sold out so get in early for Saturday’s event you want to win a cool 12280 bucks it’s $10 cash good finish there from Gary ball for his first so we do have the close one last night’s winner used the bowling arm he did that makes it even better doesn’t it just shows it is for anyone inclusivity Barry from South Australia so it’s all in the name maybe what can remember what club no no idea just came back from South Australia love it over there live golf rade yeah great bowling community over there some of the best greens in the world Darren King little bit stiff there looking for the heart of the ball shaved it and turned it in behind the back Gary ball on the back end wants another one in there or we know Darren can convert we saw it a couple of ends ago two down to three up so Gary will want another one close it’s pretty good so Barry Martin from Strath Alban yes so that’s who it was who won the Mega bowl last night a nice shot great areas there for Darren all of a sudden Gary ball might hold one but Darren’s got three seconds needs to get another one in here on a nice very nice angle there gar just needs to settle down and Nestle in he’s done that flops over for two now we might find out if Darren’s got a bit more weight in that fire has he got more weight in him here Darren can he come down and Trail this Jack or sit the shot ball or even get both balls I think he’s found the Gap well he’s done he’s got both balls but he’s still one down I believe great effort I thought he might have found the Gap there but he did enough to affect the count so this is an opportunity for Gary ball to get to double figures put in a second this one is out pretty wide though so just be the one out of the last six ends we’ve had five singles so we’re working up in ones at the moment 97 is the lead to yville foots graay Gary ball who works at Boe one of the statistical data team get a murve Mur forward a great floor managers and we’ve got Lauren Deon from all the way from California not quite the same without you Lauren had great support from some of the American players over the years did Lauren Dean did he play at the in gy at the World bowls in championships sure did y played in Ray Pierce’s section sure did World bowls last year Lauren play came over played Premier League this year so now good to see him tuning in first met Lauren World under 25 singles many years ago yeah it was Lauren Dan played with Mary Thompson in G this year winners there so good to see Ray Pierce and Samantha ainson win their Maiden World titles in the mixed pairs bit of a loose end here at least Gary can work off that weight and just fine tune his line just keep that same tempo dis ditch ideally you want to be getting good weight control over that longer length and he’s got the line this time just overdoing it and that one is a gut ball look at you Barry very pleased with his own work here is Barry ler Darren King that’s the line he was after only four feet of weight gets him right to the Jack there so this is where you know that that little bit more of a loose end is where someone can possibly take the match by the Scruff of the neck Gary’s corrected very well here now that’s as I said a good sign of touch to be able to a side resting touch up how good is that hops in front hies the Jack and the and only if Darren’s front two were the equivalent behind he’s got a great shot on all of a sudden but now he has to draw his way out of trouble and maybe set something up with his last this one has to be either on or Beyond to give him a chance with his last ball clear run well that helps managed to get second that does give him something to work off on his forehand later on have the ball s sit the shot ball so I think Gary knows it Dar Darren will be attacking this head slightly so neither player has hit double figures yet haven’t been going an hour but we are enthralled with this battle that won’t do the job so an opportunity now for Darren King to get back on the board yeah I think it’ll be forehand he’s shaping up backhand but that’s okay might be just taking his medicine here just happy to go the one down but if he wanted to score I felt it was forehand work off the yeah the ball just in short just make two yeah this one won’t get back trying but it won’t so that’ll be one to Gary ball and he’s first in the double figures here leads at 10-7 and the last four ends six out of the last seven we’ve been working up in singles very close both with balls in the area very much enjoying this battle both just it’s so important this match up because both won their first matches this morning both of them sitting pretty in the top two of their section section 127 but now whips come cracking yeah you want to be two and0 you don’t want to be trying to rely on results you want to be able to create your own destiny going in the last round of a SE you want to extend your stay as long as you can you know what happens when you last the ball don’t you Aron that’s about your Sixth and I’m cutting you off okay long and once again 33 M Darren King all the way from dinnington Southwest of Victoria home of the Jets as I mentioned great great outfit love that getting through these ends fairly quickly as well played 12 so far and the multiples had come we had a four in the second end was Gary Ball’s first score what’s he got here needs a slide just missing but it’s not bad Jack better wait so he’s got two at the moment but the way this has been going the third and fourth ballls of Darren King have been very good just hasn’t been able to master this big wide swooping ditch side I think it’s near time to to give up unless he can produce something here get some confidence back underneath I think it’s time to give that hand away Val I think just from an effective rate I think it’s jump over it to the forehand and even get in Gary’s eye as that ends have got longer that hand got wider just hasn’t sat well for Darren from an effective rate it’s okay to lose ends and that’s okay but just got to keep that effective rate up see what he does here I got a feeling he might give up maybe turn to the full hand turn the gray a few times he’s got to persist so big big big correction required here so one ball left for both I think he’s got the weight better but how’s his line Barry ler tired again I might just turn my mic off and go and have a chat to him but I’m not I can’t do that but that’s I’ve said a couple of times if you’ve got a coach and you know it’s just good to see if you’ve got a coach they’re seeing things you might not be feeling or seeing yourself it just takes a little hey Darren heate jump on the forehand I think that’s uh that’s your best hand this one might be a little tight as well although it does get the rub and that could this could be a three at the moment okay Ron indicating a third so this could break the game Open complete refresh here just take take a risk go out onto a high line and see what happens good body language he doesn’t mind it now it’s going to swoop back but this is a lot wider than his last couple it’s looking good he’s finally taken some grass he’s done it that is the king in action Darren King three goes and then the fourth was the boss or king that’s why I went with it you pick I don’t mind the boss I’ve started using that in a lot more of my commentary but 108 is the score line and you pleading with him to do it baz yeah it just he went right out to the edge of the ditch you know the Peg Peg markers are about 6 feet in from the ditch that just tells you he’s outside the peg line you’re talking N 9 10 ft of grass this is getting there but Jack doesn’t go in the pit Daren King just continuing to fight and again we go up in singles that next multiple for whoever it may be is going to prove decisive I feel this cat and mouse contest has been enthralling to say the least a what a response from three down to one up to a front toucher jack up slightly about 27 M of length so Darren’s nominated the length and dobbed one right on the front of it that is the key to singles ideally get that first bow in there sets you up for the next three needs to go again here though can’t relax Lauren Dion asking bass did you play Yesterday well yes he did he won all three matches in fact he’s through to the second round of singles action he’s done well again here has Darren this is rhythm now three rippers in a row Gary ball doesn’t have to change a lot I love that speed for now the way this head’s shaped up he’s got good speed again needs to hold on needs to hold on Gary ball he’s close well he’s held on all right he’s held on to the point he’s missed that is stiff always thought he was getting at least bowl and Jack there but the contingency is he’s got two balls in the scoring Zone and dar Darren knows all about it he’s shifting over to the forehand to try and cover those two it’s a wicked old side of the rink that one it’s wide drawing if you’re not prepared to take that extra line this is what happens Gary ball won’t be far away here to good a play to not be far away in terms of trying to sit or Trail this just back the weight off a touch here but not a bad attempt so he’s got three bows that are all able to be scored there has Gary Ball but he does find himself two or three down Jade th watching on go Dad you’ve got this Dad Darren King and he’s playing well 214 in his first match this morning that was over Doug Stewart that one just trickling through so an opportunity now for Gary ball if he tucks this Jack away that’s a four yeah if he gets the right angle of it and this is what I reckon he might be going for he’s still stalking it he’s watching this carry ball might need some action off the wing one what has he got he’s done it what a shot Gary ball you’re going to replay that for weeks that is the shot of the day and from one or two down to four up that is Monumental and Gary ball that was special yeah Darren King had two attempts to try and get there unfortunately just trickled through with his last attempt as I said the quality of Gary ball shines through seven ends in a row we scored in singles I said that it was going to be huge for whoever got the next multiple and it tended well it ended up being a maximum great to see Gary ball play clutch shots like that that’s why he’s been such a fierce competitor and successful player on the circuit for many years playing shots like that just looked composed the whole time he did it you know we we we see that good play play The Big Shots when they mattered and that is huge in the context of this match knowing it’s the first play to scored 21 and uh 21 shots he finds himself now only seven away Darren King if he had a doll for every ball that was narrow on that backand in this direction he’d be shouting us all dinner tonight maybe he will anyway who knows and so has Gary don’t get me wrong so has Gary it’s just the size of that hand coming in off the bank there look at the swoop it’s massive and usually I like to work myself around the mat on a really wide hand most times on a really wide swooping hand I go to the inside of the mat on the draw have a look at this he’s tossed this out really wide here as Darren King still working back as you see it’s you know probably a ball higher than where he needed to be but putting that trust into that hand he’ll he’ll see that and see some positives there let’s see what Gary ball can do he’s not tossed this out as wide as what Darren just did but it is working its way back have a look at this Barry leester if he can work off his own he might be in a pretty good position that’s still pretty good going over that length that’s good two BS inside a yard that will do nicely he’s sitting on two 148 Darren’s had enough he’s over that backand he’s playing we forand he looking for shot ball or Jack here Sam just commenting best playing AO we’ll get to that after this bow just missing well bit risky but if he stays on he has got a ball back there in the game yes so Sam asking why is best not playing the a he is he’s just pulled out of the singles it’s his son Harry’s second birthday today which is when he would have been playing so just decided to give the singles a break the 2018 champion and enjoy some time with his family said he might take him for a picnic and whatever Harry wants to do Harry ball with a third here he’s tossed this out pretty wide but watch this work back barer Lester yeah good home I’m interested to see what Darren does here he’s got the back ball jacking the digits to or does he go back to the that wide drawing backand back to the back end beautiful big wide drawing hand but has he tossed this out wide enough he’s got his hands on his hips I don’t think he’s too pleased but he might get some help needs to hang around grip on something and stay could have snuck in for second I think it has find out it wobbled it wiggled and I think it stayed for second but it’s not going to be the right side of the Ledger for Darren King who all of a sudden from possibly going ahead on that last end was holding two so would have at least been level he’s now down by seven it’s 15 to8 in favor of Gary ball who is edging ever so close to a two and0 leder to start his Australian Open singles campaign and be interesting to see if there’s any equipment change for some of these players if they’ve got a spare set or if they just uh stay with what they’ve got throughout the tournament if they get deeper and deeper because if the greens are the weather’s going to stay how it is now right through to the end of the tournament could see potential 17 18 seconds in these greens unless we get some more heavy dues at night but we’re talking this green here drawing right out to the peg good 89 ft of draw and running 16 16 and 1 half seconds on day two scary yep Lauren Deon forgot to mention I’m watching alongside royalty and world champion of champ winner an Nunes now that is that is royalty and winning straight after the world balls championships last year it was a big few weeks for her her and Dan seon amazing week for American balls Crowd Goes Wild the background just over the fence behind us we’ve got front row seats to a local match happening how was the penalty safe there brw be United well they were the ones that didn’t score so a sport for Choice here as Gary ball gets the shot and if we’re not careful lucky this this netting’s quite High would have a ball coming at us oh my god well we’ve got one on the rink we’ve got them over there PS everywhere Darren King not bad couple of feet heavy so Unity now for Gary ball to really stamp his authority it was a real stalemate in the middle portion of this match where seven ends in a row sorry seven out of eight ends we worked up in singles and a second four for Gary ball has seen him Forge ahead he’s up by seven and that one is going to sit pretty as well he’s sitting on two Darren King he needs to get uh get shot here wouldn’t want to leave it to his last scoreboard pressure I know he has shots up his sleeve in terms of standings but if Gary ball can push forward from here he needs to get some shots back on Darren but Darren says Gary you’re going to have to do better than that absolutely brilliantly done way like Ben Stiller Tom Cruz we’re starting to finish each other’s sentences I know that look at us the Bromance of the AO we spent that much time together at World Championships last year Gary ball looking for some action on that shot ball or half Jack and he’s going to M high he doesn’t want to clean a few of his own out well it hung around but the good thing is I think now he’s got a really good catchment back there if he can oh no he’s out of bows sorry yeah but you’re right though that’s the name of the game got a lost in the uh in the sun that’s the name of the game ideally wanted those balls behind but this is like a free hit here or a king hit you might want to call it I don’t think we want to call it that but he didn’t quite uh do it there Darren just missing High so 59 is the score much needed end for Darren King to get himself a bit closer and remember you can head to bows.com wau 25% off rookie rollers kits and a free wedge with each kit purchased and go to balls Australia’s website you can work out how to do that is this Jack trickles towards the ditch and hangs on does just still sell chalk wedges is get a chalk wedge is that I don’t know ice cream chalk wedge ice cream I was I was I thought you were going with the ice cream I don’t know haven’t had one in years could be a day for an ice be one for our viewers was the last time you had a chalk wedge you know what is good here at Broad Beach on Australia’s go Coast you head into the main drag and yoi Barry the frozen yogurt I’m going to have to go during the week I’m not going on a weekend because the line is ridiculous but it is very good some M&M’s in that some sprinkles and 5-year-old Val very happy so the mats up about 4 M and Jack’s just short of the te it’s just on the te there so long end this one and that’s a pretty good starter from Darren considering he’s played that WID side again but Gary balls had a free run at this inside and if he makes it he’s all over it just pulling up short so still a bit of room for Darren see what he decides to do continuing on with this backand it looks pretty good is he finally starting to figure it out it’s just going to roll on two too far I feel but again look at where those two balls are looks very determined Darren King you can just tell in his body language he will not go down without a fight here no matter what happens he’s got that look in his eye well if you take away the two maximums that Gary ball is secured it’s pretty much dead even that’s right just that ability to finish and get those big scores that sets apart the best from the rest Gary ball has been Sensational okay Darren King can he pick the jack up here wow close m mightly close so as we as I mentioned in the game this is one this is for the viewers this one if you look at Darren’s three balls so this is perfect if we can just really focus on the angles of the balls so Gary ball is coming in on the back end which is the northern side of the rink and you can see the angle of the bowl coming in they’re not as sharp as the three gray balls that indicates which side is the widest Ball’s coming on finishing on a much much stronger angle tells you the hand that that’s coming in on from a much higher line and a and a stronger draw so that in most places you play whether indoor outdoor would tell you that most of the time it’s going to be a hard hand to really nail coming in on such a sharp drawing turn whereas Gary ball if he only had the weight you could see would have had the ability to nail those Jacks and people always say I’ll bar you know in the wind or whatever what hand do you like to play ideally I want to play the hand where I can nail the Jack and not have to come across the front or across the side of the jack on a sharp angle like we see the way those three gry balls are finishing and that’s unfortunately the difference of this match Darren’s just trying to persist on a difficult hand and hasn’t been able to get on top of it excellent analysis from you Barry Leicester that’s why you’re the best in the business but Gary B just coming down to inspect the head here he’s got one ball left look looking for a three to get himself to all of a sudden a n shot lead possibly he’s sitting on a live score of 178 if he can nail this oh sorry 179 if he can nail this he can make it 18-9 what’s he surveying there Bez I think for Gaz this is one of his well it’s not definitely one of his better ends but I think what he’s doing there is just going you know what I haven’t really played a good bow yet and I’m might just you mentioned the word I think refresh earlier with the sets play example I think he’s doing his own little refresh moment here just going you know what you can do this what what you’ve played two out of my out three balls really good lines come on you can find this weight you’re after so it’s either add the weight or and or promote he just needs to promote any one of these and run off himself and he’s made at least one that’s a great shot Gary ball did it really composed just the way he conducted himself up and down the ring took his time and and like you said he just refreshed sometimes you need to do that and the best way to do it is either speak to the marker get some nervous energy out or go for a walk clear your head one kicked out this B second look like a two if it is a two puts him into that checkout Zone with an hour and 2 minutes still on the clock so plenty of time but I feel as though the way this is panned out it is only just the one so we continue to pretty much work up in singles 16 to9 that’s the score the last multiple that Darren King managed to net was a three and that was on end four of this match we’re playing n 17 and only three multiples in this match have gone the way of Gary ball sitting with a four on end two a two on end seven and another mighty four on end 13 and it was that shot of Darren Kings on the forehand in that easterly direction where he sat that ball Gary Kell sorry Gary Kelly’s Gary Gary Kelly’s on the mine that’s for sure yeah we just chat about him earlier about the mega Bowl look at this from Gary ball Gary Ball but yeah he he played that ball to to Perfection to make that three so seen a bit of everything from both players here dead draw some touch Play Sitting balls trailing Jacks Gary made the four from trailing Jack so we’ve seen a bit of everything so far and we hope we see more of it as we see the clock ticking down we’re down to an hour now so it does get away pretty quick these games you know if we keep sort of traveling at one shot and end let’s say if Darren scores the next five or six singles there’s the way the speed of the greens running there’s half an hour 40 minutes taking up so doesn’t take much in these games to get start getting down the wire you got to look at the clock you take Gary balls to multiples out and make him singles and we’re well and truly onto a a tough game that’s going to go down to the white with time so as these greens will get slightly quicker over the next week I think we’ll find some games when you’re reading the scores mhm some players won’t reach 21 having said that after the sectional rounds in singles there are no time limits I think is it as we get to the quarterfinals quarterfinals sorry I do apologize yeah I’m a big one for that quarterfinals onwards um I’d love to see it a blanket rule around Australia in all events no time I’ve Just Seen uh yeah some events played in the last sort of two or three years it’ just be great to see quarterfinals onwards no time limits it just sort of doesn’t make sense for me to to have in finals have time limits so it’s a it’s it’s a great thing that they’re doing there for that um it just yeah for me like I said doesn’t quite make sense as we see Gary just needs to find a couple of feet well not quite but look at that line so if you haven’t nailed the Jack that’s not the end of the world what you need to be able to do is be able to say have I at least got my line or have I got my length and really work with that and Gary’s got both here he’s got his weight with his first and his line with his second so that has to help his confidence as he goes about his game for sure Darren’s charging into this head here needs some contact oh so close he knocked his away and then sort of rolled a little bit more this could possibly be a two still leaning towards just the single I think it is two car ball on the forehand don’t know if he’s too pleased with it I don’t think he’s reaching if he is it’s look at this green starting to run on it’s beautiful finish in this green missing High so Darren just coming up to survey once more this is his final bow if he’s down two yeah could Trail it for four here baz yeah that’s you pointed to it yeah that’s what he’ll be after okay he runs the risk it if he if he finds a hole or doesn’t quite come off comes back to what you’re most comfortable if he tries to dead draw this and finishes a yard short he’s still two down whereas if he plays with Ditch weight he could sit a ball go one down could sit a bowl and stay and make one you don’t want to I wouldn’t say overthink it because I think overthinking can be really really good means you’re you know you’re looking at all the uh all the data and and all the assessment of the head but I think here what it’s all about is playing what you’re comfortable with don’t get trapped into playing something that you’re not overly positive about uh you know he could go really big and put the Jack in the ditch if that’s what he natural game is but if he’s comfortable playing the yard draw which makes him fall here back yourself and do it as he centered though it’s going to swoop back let’s see opportunity lost here so let’s see what the end result is going to be if it’s a two it’s real danger signs for Darren King was 108 after 12 ends and then a four for Gary ball has sent this match well put it on its head find out just the one so again we work up in singles and it’s just proving why those SCS have been so pivotal for Gary ball today and now he’s within touching distance he’s within an end he’s in that checkout zone of putting this result to bed out of the 17 ends we’ve played 13 of them have been ones as the clock taks down 55 minutes to go Gary ball he’s played this backand so well he’s had it to himself he he’s had it to himself pretty much all day and now the score sits at 79 Darren now he finally moves over with his first on the forehand and let’s see what he can find here Darren King you know what if he plays a half decent bowl with his first I think that’s it just don’t ever go back to that back end but he’s he’s put one in the way so that might cause him to go back to the back end but Gary ball so see see what Gary Ball’s doing here so Gary ball knows that he could potentially bump Darren in for shot here or or hit Darren’s Ball but he knows he’s probably a higher chance of playing a better bow on the back hand here than he does on that hard forehand he’s coming underneath this bowl let’s see where he ends up yeah so he’s just a bit quick but still that’s a good ball good home in the game and he’s just trying to get that rhythm going Gary just keep firing him down on the same line same hand so nice nice technique there from Darren this one looks a bit better in terms of what waight just a bit high on this occasion but he might get to the re spot so Gary ball within four of Victory it was 108 just five ends ago but he’s won four of the last five ends including that big four on end 13 now he’s switching hands let’s see where he puts this hands on hips he’s throwing it out there it’s coming back it’s spinning spinning spinning into the head and that is another counter that is two I think we’re going to see some big weight here from Darren he’s got the respot ball out the back I think it’ll be forehand looking for both balls and no okay I think he might be trying to draw this one I thought it’ be forand rip both balls out or Jack in the ditch let’s see what he does he’s TR put himself on the back hand throw himself out of trouble he’s not far away he misses High he’s got two back bows now I think he I think he has to go for this Jack doesn’t he he thinks so because it couldn’t get him a big score now does Gary ball try and cover this WOW Gary ball you draw another for game hold to hold game or do you is he holding four is he holding three yes he’s holding three so well then yes you do so Darren’s probably now definitely got a draw to stay in the game I feel and this is coming around very nicely needs it to stop wants it to stop pretty big Target do you run and just flick one out or put the Jack in the ditch for I think you have to try and count here want oh he’s going his full hand he’s got a pretty good shot on here rip a few balls out so he’s going for it get the Jack in the ditch and he has to not his own not his own well he’s got his own and that is another four they are shaking hands it’s a shame because it the the score line of 219 doesn’t reflect how good this match was and Gary ball has just been thereabouts constantly and time after time but he does win he moves to a two and zero record in section 127 of the 2024 Australian Open men singles and he gets the job done over his Victorian comp Patriot Darren King Barry he was he was brilliant and Darren King not far off but just you know those little those little ends here and there that was enough for Gary ball to get the job done yeah you can see how uh Darren King had such a big win in his first game he can see he’s a quality player uh just probably if he had his time back he wouldn’t have played that wide ditch side so much I feel he could have just played that forehand a little bit more to the ocean side to to get in Gary’s way and just change the the pattern of the the game but well done to to Darren he’s uh definitely well and truly in the section with his shots advantage and Gary well I said with his the way he was delivering the ball he’s definitely in good touch and it’s probably going to take a bit of an upset to see him that he doesn’t win the section but well done to both players and um yeah we’re just lucky to be here I guess looking forward to the final session of the day because it is Cody Packer r at home jackaroo he is going to feature looking forward to that contest that’s in an hour and 21 minutes time 2 : local time here on the Gold Coast Australian Eastern Standard Barry
