England were beaten by Iceland at Wembley last night as their big Euro sendoff fell very very flat in fact they were booed off by a section of the fans at Wembley yeah have a look at this the ghosts of Euro 2016 eight years on from that famous defeat which saw England knocked out of the Euros that year the ghosts of Iceland haunted Harry Kane and Co once again yeah England forward Anthony Gordon described the result as a wakeup call and with just eight days and until England’s opening game against Serbia manager G Southgate warned his players they must improve any sort of complacency that Talent is going to get us you know this trophy um and that we only have to sort of stroll in I mean football is not like that you’ve got to be spot on in every aspect of the game to win any game at this level and we were we were a long way short of that tonight and uh you know Iceland deserved deserved their win they had a couple of other chances on the break that we we didn’t deal with um so I I think it really focuses our minds to drive the team over the next week no quals with the supporters reaction you know we to um to have the fans with you uh here obviously makes a massive difference but you have to give them enough goal mouth action you have to play well enough uh press and win the ball with with intensity to keep them with you uh during the game and and tonight we wer we didn’t do that so we have to accept the the reaction as it wasse I don’t think obviously we’re England got some very good players out on the pitch we don’t expect to lose these games so it’s a bit of a smacking the nose and maybe a little wake up call what have the boys said to each other after there is it damaged confidence at all no no way I think it’s good practice you know it’s doesn’t matter unless we do in the tournaments the tournament’s where it matters and that’s when that’s when we’ll do it now the England Captain Harry Kane said this about the performance on social media he said not how he wanted to sign off for the Euros but loads to learn from and will’ll get stronger get behind the lads and we’ll see you in Germany ended it with three lion emojis I think we need some reaction don’t you to last night’s game our senior reporter Rob Dorset is at Wembley Stadium for us this morning and just behind us in the big screen hello Rob you’re the game last night how concerning was last night’s defeat where do you start uh listen not since 1968 have England lost their final warm-up game before a major tournament that puts it into context a little bit for you and this was against aside ranked 72 in the FIFA world rankings usbekistan the United Arab Emirates and Cape verie are ranked above Iceland in the FIFA world rankings and England lost one n it should have been more there were clear-cut chances that Iceland didn’t take and I don’t think I I’d seen such levels of optimism amongst England’s supporters and indeed from pundits on Sky Sports and elsewhere after Gare Southgate named his squad for the Euros on Friday uh on Thursday I should say Thursday tea time the reality is now I don’t think I’ve ever seen an England squad this underprepared this ill prepared before a major tournament um it’s a day off for the players and the staff today G Southgate decided to give the players the chance to go and spend some time with their families and reflect and recover a little bit before the Long Hall out in Germany but that first game in group C against Serbia is just eight days away now and Gareth Southgate probably has some major headaches there are real real problems for England going into this tournament you say major headaches there Rob there’s lots of talk about England’s defensive frailties going in to the euros and their two center backs last night they both picked up knocked didn’t they what’s the latest on them yeah look England’s defense has been a problem in every single tournament and to be honest England are incredibly strong going forward they’re brilliant in Midfield now with Jude Bellingham and Declan rice as two of the the best at their arts in probably European maybe World football um but the defense has always been a problem for England before they had all of these injury problems at the back and that’s just made it worse and that was in full view last night we know that Harry MaGuire who is actually really important to England despite all the controversy about when he’s been selected in the past we know he won’t be going to the tournament because of that ongoing calf problem that was a big blow first and foremost that meant Jon Stones was the senior man in in England’s defense what happened very early on in the game one of the Iceland players falls on his ankle it looked really nasty he managed to play on until halim but then England took him off as a precaution how serious is that ankle problem bear in mind Jon Stones desperately needed the game time he’s only made one Premier League start for Manchester City since the middle of March so even if he recovers from this injury how much is he going to be able to train how fit is he going to be for that opening game against Serbia that’s just eight days away and then to compound it all Mark Gay the natural understudy the man who was surely going to be alongside Jon stones at Center back for this tournament gets a ball in the face from close range it it looked really worryingly like it might be a cushion might he have to follow some protocols and not be able to train for days coming up in in this week in the buildup to that first game those are the levels of concerns we’re talking about I should say we saw Jon Stones walk through the mix Zone after the game he looked fine but there will be a lot of medical attention to check that out of course and Mark Gay actually did an interview with Crystal Palace TV after the game and I saw him and he looked fine it certainly didn’t have any wooliness around his head but again it’ll be monitored very closely by the medical staff so those concerns at the back before you add in the fact that Luke Shaw is coming with England to this tournament who hasn’t played any football since February and may not be able to play much if any of a part in the group games and you start to get a sense of what GTH Southgate is dealing with Southgate didn’t get a lot right last night but when it comes to the injury problems he’s got at the back it’s beyond his control and there are real worries about England at the back key players are not here key players have significant injuries key players have real doubts about their Fitness about how much they can train with only 8 days to go before the tournament starts for England Mark fine I think um John we decided at halftime no point in taking any chances because we’re obviously so close to the uh to the tournament and um he’s he’s a very important player for us so so a short bit of G Southgate outlining there and he sounded optimistic didn’t he there are also concerns you have to say up front about the fitness of the Captain Harry Kane remember he missed the final three games of Bayern Munich season with his back problem he came off the bench and scored against Bosnia and Herz goia at St james’ Park on Monday night he he was on from the start last night and he looked really lethargic he made a a brilliant turn on the halfway line on about six minutes and sprayed the ball out wide uh to Anthony Gordon who who was clear of the Iceland defense and I thought wow that’s that’s what Harry Kane can do but then I looked when Anthony Gordon tried to play the ball into the box and Harry Kane was probably 230 yards behind the play he simply couldn’t make up the ground to try and get on the end of Anthony Gordon’s cross so the reality is that England’s Captain one of their most important players their their chief goal scorer England’s all-time leading goal scorer has Fitness concerns isn’t fully fit going into the tournament is still nursing that back and hasn’t had enough game time look I don’t want to sound like a Munger of Doom but there are real problems here for England real problems we’ve asked uh some of our viewers for how they’re feeling going into these Euros Rob I’ll just give you one for a flavor of it quite scared is one England fan they’ve got just over a week to prepare for that first game against Serbia so what happens in between now and then well I think that day off today for the players might be significant a chance for them to get away get out of the camp and and clear their heads they’ve already been together for best part of two weeks now 10 days plus most of them um and they’re about to spend the next five weeks plus they hope if they go deep into the tournament uh in Germany so a chance to refresh and get away and focus the minds with with the family uh Anthony Gordon I did interview with after the game at Wembley last night and he said it’s a smack on the nose and it has shaken the players I think GTH Southgate will be pleased to hear that um I mean the fact that g s said the problems were chiefly off the ball well look I agree with him England didn’t press it was far too easy for Iceland to get through the England Midfield and and put pressure on England’s back four they have to look at that they do have a bit of time to prepare for that um but the reality is England’s tournament starts very very quickly now look the good news is because of the expanded competition this this summer in the Euros it’s going to be very difficult for England not to progress from the group stages one win and a draw out of their three group games ought to be enough so they’ve got time to get some of these players fit they’ve got time to get a bit of Rhythm together but G Southgate will have been really concerned by what he saw last night England had got to change things and change them quickly and that tag of favorites for to win the trophy to lift the trophy England’s first major trophy since 1966 all seems pretty Hollow right now doesn’t it England got a lot of an questions to answer and they’ve got to answer them quickly [Music]

  1. Had 4 years to prepare. Anyone know what the back 4 looks like? Have they played together before.

  2. The amount of hate we get as England fans does nothing but motivate us, you abuse our players, you mock our team, you berate us for supporting OUR country and then wonder why we dont win anything.

We are hated for existing, so even if we win people will taunt us for no reason.

Portugal loose to slovenia- we say nothing
France concede in 7 SECONDS and LOOSE- we say nothing
Spain loose to colombia- we say nothing
France draw with CANADA- we say nothing

As soon as we loose, the haters come out and verbally abuse us.
At this point we dont care anymore, if u dont wanna get behind the lads, the team and this fantastic club f off and find a team that suits ur likeings.

  3. Dont forget they were also dire under Cappello and Ericksen, this is just a continuation of our FA appointing crap managers or in Southgate,s case complete wokey yes men.

  4. Nothing like showing your support to your national team as they leave for a major tournament like booing them. Bet that will help the players perform their best

  5. The English media are the worst:

Before: "We're guaranteed to win it – aren't we?"
After: "They're and absolute shambles – what a disgrace."

My god, it's a friendly – failure is the key to success.

  6. The Britih press is truly disgusting! Get behind our team for once and stop the racism against the young, black players! Gareth Southgate has been one of the most successful England managers by all metrics. I cannot understand the hate!

  7. It's the defence that's the problem the fact he hasn't picked Erik Dier who has had a decent season for Bayern and cb that they need is puzzling

  8. Except last week when we had a squad full of bang in form, young quality talent & in great shape for the tournament.
Dorsett’s a muppet, never get a good word out of his trap.
France drew 0-0 with Canada last night, wonder if Les Bleus are having the same cataclysmic meltdown our media seem to have gone on?
Buzzing to bring the trophy home and have every one of these doomsday reporters eating humble pie

  9. We did terribly in the Nations League, we just lost to Iceland……. we should be doing so much better with the players we have.

  10. France drew 0.0 with Canada yesterday who are rated 49th in the world and last week Holland thrashed Canada 4.0 last week

  11. The problem is not the manager or the tactics. The issue is that for their clubs, these players have the support of many the best foreign internationals in the world who create chances and score goals with world class efficiency. Without these world class internationals, this is the result. When playing for their clubs, England supporters need to discount the contribution made by foreign internationals when trying to gauge prospects for the national team. Supporters always forget this and extrapolate aspirations based on club fortunes, forgetting to subtract the international contingent.

  12. This was a warm up game and unfortunately after a long season, complacency will set in. The real question is – does Gareth Southgate have the winning mentality to drive his squad to the final? Is he capable of tactically managing a group of highly talented players to the trophy? I honestly don’t believe he takes it as seriously as he should!

  13. England have players that can win anything but they have a useless manager. The FA are a disgrace for keeping Southgate because he doesn’t answer back.
