down here on the 12th hole Bryson getting ready to hit his driver uh let’s see what he’s got I got nothing he hit two on the last hole they we about 5 yards apart it was pretty filthy oh we’re good perfect right down the middle you going to hit another one or you going to be satisfied with that one that was a good drive I’ll take that it’s only 188 hey will you grab the five I I’d like to talk about that all right well we’re here live Bryson to Shambo 2020 US Open Champion thanks for taking the time to be with us thank you uh I’ve always respected your ability of thinking outside the box and doing things differently um your mustache however that you had last week was not appropriate you got to give it five weeks I got scared of you that stash right there you you set too high of a bar literally all right so you this is the latest thing you’ve been doing here it’s the five iron a lot was made of it just got approved right before the Masters it’s got roll on the face roll on the face yeah oh bulge soge well whatever I mean whatever term you want to use but essentially it doesn’t go this way it doesn’t roll this way it rolls this way get it on the toe yeah there we go so see that I go that perspective can you guys see the curvature on the face it’s kind of like a driver or hybrid or whatnot and that might be an easier way to show it too I don’t know if you can kind of see it but it does cave in on the the heel and caves in on the toe as well which creates that curvature so for the speeds uh that I have when I hit on the toe or heel it doesn’t overcorrect so most people think that um irons’s Moi there doesn’t really have it doesn’t really affect the curvature but it actually does at my speeds at the lower speeds uh lower lofted and higher speeds so essentially when I hit on the toe I was hooking it like crazy heel I was missing it right like crazy so I created curvature on the toe and the heel to get his start a little farther right right on the toe and on the heel start a little farther left so that it makes sure it doesn’t go too far off line much like the driver right right and you’ve got a new driver it’s like a long drive it’s crank driver and it’s nobody else out here is playing anything like that all right so also You’ said the what is the Loft on a normal five iron 27 uh something like that but mine’s a 17 it’s just a number I I know I know but it’s interesting the way you said it too the way it’s a number you’re looking for a launch angle and spin rate specifically that’s that’s what gives you the number on the club yep and an apex height if it goes too high then we got to lower it down for that club that I’m trying to to hit so all I’m trying to do on a five iron is have pretty much 4200 4100 spin 4,000 spin um which is this is what it is right now currently at 17° of Loft but you get to like a pitching wedge um and that’s 40° of Loft which spins at 9,000 for me right well it’s it’s roughly for five iron you want roughly 5,000 exactly 9,000 9 9,000 exactly 8 iron 8,000 7 7,000 for me I’m a th000 under all of that okay because of the speed I produce and the and the height that it goes with that speed what are you long or something no no no no I hit it short don’t think I hit it long there’s a lot of long drivers out there that have way faster swing speeds than me actually Charles uh uh Ryder has a have you seen he’s out here this week he has long drive guy no but he’s got 200 M of ball speed so he h a really far he’s playing in the tournament he is oh cool the prep work I’ve done yeah I’m not trying to short you at all uh all right 12th hole Pinehurst you have a little bit of experience playing here you said back in college you came and had a had a trip here I did I um went with uh Mr deadmond who owns the golf course uh I think that he brought the USGA headquarters here which is really cool him to do that SMU um man and he was able to help our golf team out in 2012 2013 when Josh Gregory Jason enla were there and we went out had a nice trip and played a little tournament uh against ourselves and uh got to experience Pinehurst which is really cool very cool as a kid from Clovis California always seeing the pinus number two has been and the history it’s brought uh pretty special for a kid out of California to see that so for a venue like this for a US Open is there anything in particular you’ve done to get ready for the Bermuda grass for knowing that there’s slopes all over the greens and runoff areas or are you kind of doing it on the Fly while you’re here uh I’m not necessarily doing it on the Fly I’m purposefully practicing a lot more more around the greens than I normally would in a tournament and that’s specific to the grass right cuz you I can go to a berm golf course and sometimes it’s not this exact same grass and doesn’t have the same sloping whatnot so getting out here getting comfortable with the grass practicing a lot around the greens is key for Success this week are there any clubs that you don’t normally chip with that you’re trying this week uh I’m not Tiger Woods in it where I got irons everywhere he’s getting four IR four iron yeah which is cool I I’m not comfortable with that I don’t practice with that so I’ll do a 50 5 Dee lofted club or 60° turn the face down put the toe in the ground and try to take all of the grain out of it where I’m just skimming across it think you can teach me how to do that I’ve heard the stories we’re not going to say anything about that I wasn’t going to be too hard I mean you’re welcome too everybody else is taking a shot what’s the uh what’s the distance 165 165 into the wind these greens are diabolical you’re just trying to hit hit the middle of the green here and um yeah it’s not easy to do so 165 into the wind what are you thinking jibbo I full wedge might just have too much spin you think just under yeah I think it’s going to be just like a 1039 iron uh 10:30 that’s when you’re that’s where the position of your left arm arm so the position of the left arm pretty much right shoulder being right here uh at the right shoulder is 10:00 and then little past that 10:30 and then my full swing is 11:00 so you you have a 10 a 10:30 9:30 really oh yeah I got the whole whole whole that takes a lot of practice to get that right so what club is that this is a nineiron well people would say it’s my eight but you know go in oh great shot Nice Shot dude Ben James out here I I’m a Virginia Tech guy he’s a UVA guy so I’m blanking him not even can’t even look at him all right when’s off the left 165 you said going to play about 170 so I’m going to hit a 1031 which my full N9 iron goes about 185 to 187 right now 1030 is going to play 170 so I’m just going to try and do that and H a good swing here it’s like I’m already in tournament mode geez stop that is really good it’ll be fine Bryson really appreciate your time man for have a great week great success George back to you great mustache

  1. He’s absolutely right. The number on the sole of the club is just to identify it from another club in the set. Might as well call it Fred or Nancy.

  2. Love him or hate him, this guy is really engaging and a fun interview! More than anyone else out there in pro golf. Tough to debate that!

  3. Arguably nobody on tour knows more about golf mechanics than Bryson. I would put Mickelson and Tiger up there, but probably knows more than the manufacturers’ reps

  4. I met Bryson at Liv golf in Australia the other month. He stopped and had a picture with us and signed my wife’s hat. He is a true gentleman

  5. “When I hit it on the toe I was hooking it like crazy.” Yes, that’s how it should be. Clubs shouldn’t be so advanced that professionals are bragging about how their bad strikes aren’t being punished. That’s great for making the game more accessible for amateurs but it’s removing skill and consistency from the professional game and turning it into a swing speed contest.
