and we got to flash back to what unfolded earlier in the week and this was an unfortunate series of events led to the disqualification nasah Oka you checked this out in her first round on Friday this was her approach to the par five 9th that was their final hole of the day in the Deep grass the search committee was out trying to find her ball they ultimately did but remember you’re only allowed 3 minutes to search for your ball NASA Oka once they found it took it unplayable she had a rules official that helped her with the drop but once the 3 minutes had aaps she should have gone and just replayed from the original spot Johnson it’s a it’s a tough situation in 3 minutes in this sort of scenario goes by really quick so she had signed for A6 under 65 which was an incorrect scorecard here was the LPGA statement after viewing video footage provided to the LPGA falling the around it was determine the search for NASA’s ball lasted longer than 3 minutes um player must proceed under stroke and distance the rules require the player whose ball is lost to proceed under stroke and distance so the LPGA Tour had said hok’s ball was eventually found after the search time expired the rules require the player whose ball is lost to proceed under stroke in distance they went on to say this is considered a serious breach of rule 1417 with a penalty of disqualification if not corrected in time the player had until she left the scoring area to correct the mistake for signing for that improper scorecard so Jenny Shin who had been the overnight leader she’s now trailing by one put this out on Twitter or X she said this is probably controversial NASA Hoka getting dced because someone thought it was 25 seconds over 3 minutes after the scorecard was signed should not be happening should someone be timing to prevent this maybe however if I heard correctly there was a rules official who is present to help her take an a play on all players Cades in the group did not mention anything to the official or even after the fact this is probably costing her deal for the Olympics coming up not ideal so these are the Olympic standings that Jenny Shin was alluding to for the Japanese women you could Sasso just won the US Women’s Open is in that first spot they would only have two spots because their second players outside the top 15 so NASA Hoka currently in that second spot these are tied to the world ranking she’s 19th in the world rankings why is this week so important well she’s disqualified why aaka fway is currently top 10 so she may jump up in the world rankings not sure if she’ll jump up far enough to catch nasah Hoka this week but they only have two weeks left so you never want to see a player disqualified but Johnson I mean you’ve lived that life through the lens of a player what’s your read on the situation well in that situation it’s just off the edge of the green it’s really hard to think that when you go up there and start searching that you need to start a clock but with a 3 minute uh as opposed to a 5 minute like it used to be before the 2019 rules changes it is incumbent on the player or their caddy to start a clock or someone in the group and the fact that this all could have been avoided had that happened so I just think the lesson going forward is start a clock when you’re on a search this happened to a friend of mine at Pebble Beach earlier this year at spy glass it was really soft ball plugged in the left rough he hit a provisional uh and they found the ball but it was determined since he didn’t start a clock it was after 3 minutes and had to go and play his provisional ball so it’s that player told me that anytime he starts a search he’s going to have his caddy start the clock and I think this is a lesson you learn one time real quick how often do people actually start clocks when they’re searching it’s hard it doesn’t happen enough but I think since the rule changed to three minutes it needs to start happening more and the messaging needs to get out to the players from the officials and the tournament organizers that we’re not going to be there when you start looking by the time we get there it’s hard to determine how long you’ve been searching so it is truly on the players to to do this

THIS PENALTY MUST BE RECALLED and RULE MUST BE CHANGED! What can 3 minutes do? Clock started by the time she arrived?
There should be a Green Marshall. Though there was not field marshall nearby at first, but then an OFFICIAL CAME, STAYED AND ALLOWED for Nasa next shot. Why did't they instructed her? Japanese don't cheat like Korean!
Yeah ultimately it's on Nasa to know the rules but a tour official was right there. She should have let Nasa know the time situation then inform her she has to go back. Something needs to change regarding official search timing and not say it's on the player to start a clock.
People start searching right after the ball lands nasa has no idea once she gets to where the ball was lost, only going by what spotters are telling her, if she starts searching in the wrong spot than the official following that group needs to approach her and say you now have three minutes to locate Ur ball than she or her caddie can start the clock even than the official should have started her clock and warned her that time was up, can u imagine this happening to Nelly Korda, i think not😅
I always start a clock. Eveb when playing alone.
The punishment does not fit the crime… if there was even a violation to begin with. When is video replay an acceptable means for officiating purposes, and when is it not? Other pro leagues have outlined criteria of when video replay can and cannot be used.
All about the rules here but also about pointing out poor governance and rules officiating. Golfers take 3 minutes looking for a ball even when they aren’t really looking for a ball.
The 5 minute rule was never administered by the second and even less should the 3 minute rule be. The point of this rule is to save time and improve pace of play.
All this did was slow the pace of play.
When we arrive at a ball—say for a competitor— I sometimes look at the clock but even then I’m giving major leeway because I don’t want to be like that.
Whoever did this is like that.
I agree if the rules official is there and suddenly for the first time in the history of golf they are going to care about a few seconds, maybe he should have to ask the player if it’s possible they went over time. Because otherwise the players are using their best judgment like any other judgment call.
Super lame here. Embarrassing for the sport. The big takeaway here is the more they try to fix the more they mess them up.
WTF ..Maybe cut the grass or buy some goats and this would not happen
What is the purpose of a rules official if they are not going to inform the player of a possible rules violation on the spot especially something so subjective like a time limit! And then inform them after the fact that, oh by the way, you’re dq’d! And also they used video evidence after the fact to discover the rules violation. So that means players that are not stars or in contention don’t have to worry about being scrutinized by rules violations because they are not on tv to be second guessed. Sounds like players are treated differently and it’s not an equal playing field. Sounds like Nance telling the pga player in contention who was saying the tv drone was too close when trying to play his shot, to get used to it.
Your officiating is poor.
You made three errors .
First an official that was present should have told her that her time was up.
Second you did not advise her that she was about to sign an incorrect score card. You could have told her that she needed to add a penalty stroke.
Third error is using a video review after the fact. This is a game of honour and the player did nothing intentional.
Are you going to rewatch the entire match to see if someone else broke a rule? I find this disqualification completely uncalled for .
I was at the US LPGA open in Lancaster Pennsylvania an official briefed a player against an immovable obstruction exactly how to take correct releif. It was not up to the player.
The player listened to the officials instructions and followed them.
The official should be the one to say the three minutes are up. How would the golfer know how long the officials had been looking for the ball before she walked up?
This 3 minute rule should be timed by an official and if that is not the rule then it should be changed.
4:07
time clock with a buzzer?
Why did no one tell her before she signed?
Lesson for all professional golfers. If spotters are searching walk really slow getting to your ball.
If they had to use video review I think this is unfair. When no cameras are on guaranteed players are sometimes taking over 3 minutes. I guess a caddie should pull out his phone and start a timer but then what do they do at the Master's. Smartphones aren't allowed.
How did the post round ruling started anyway? I guess LPGA is going to be busy reviewing videos everyday now on.
lame rule, i get it….should just make it a 2 stroke penalty and move on.
Oh.. thats not so good to see… Korean don't cheat like Japanese. Hataoka should learn more about the rules.
This is stupid. Each group in a professional tournament should have a referee. That referee should have a stop watch and they should call time is up when 3 minutes runs out. If you are going to DQ someone over this, then there needs to be a monitor with each group to handle all rules issues.
what's the point of officials if they make their rulings after the round has been completed? Next time, Nasa should ask for a ruling any time her ball is not obviously in play. Make the official tell her where to play the ball and what the stroke penalty is.
are we implying that a player must (1) starting self timing themselves (and watch the clock) and (2) look for the ball, simultaneously?
So (1) when does the three minutes start? and……(2) a player just has to find and identify the ball within the time limit, correct?
This is ridiculous, the rule official was right there and did nothing to prevent this mistake.
Put grass like that right next to the green and only give them 3 minutes to find it? Not a fair setup. Got to change the rule
I wonder what would have happened if this happened to Tiger Woods ?
Rough like that should not be within 15 yards of the green. And the rough should be cut to a reasonable height so at least a ball can be found within 3 minutes.
