present session two here at the broad Beach bows Club on day three of the 2024 Australian Open the sun is shining now it was a bit cloudy this morning but it is well and truly out for this clash between David Lim of Bondi and Andy Smith of corfield Park very much looking forward to it valo my name and joining me is the one and only Michael hollywood senson good morning it is welcome to this beautiful day here in Broad Beach bows Club it is beautiful an amazing a CRA start Andy Smith of corfield Park in Melbourne and David Lim of Bondi bolo in Sydney what a be beautiful spot for a bows Club some high-profile members as well at Bondi ponter Palmquist of Sweden represented the swedes at the world bows championships last year and the red and white bows of Andy Smith they are grab the model for you they are xgs and David Lim using Taylor srvs he’s got the blue ones blue gray looks like a gray sple yep Andy’s pled another one on there forcing David to change hands straight away that’s the area they’re coming from Fair correction here from David bit of I like to move it move it coming up next playing in the background and he’s just going past the head a little bit not a bad spot so this is section 243 both of these two suffered defeats in their opening round Andrew Smith or Andy Smith going down to Robert bird of New Zealand 2115 and then David Lim going down to Steve Eaton of Strath Alban 21-9 so both of them suffering first round defeats looking to get their tournament back on track and interesting talking to Andy just before this as he gets ready to F down his last bowl of this opening end he’s only been playing bowls for 5 years Hollywood and this is the third time he’s come to the AO so the first time he came up he’ been a bowler for 2 years and that’s how infectious this wonderful sport is and look at this gets in that’ll be enough for a couple and again that’s the beauty of this this Championship it’s the fact that anybody can play doesn’t matter what level you are you can come down here and you can match your wares against some of the best in the world if you’re like enough you could come up against an Aaron sheriff or an Aaron’s or you can come up here and you can play against a couple of guys from your own club but it gives you an opportunity to see what type of level that your bows are at exactly he picks up a quick two there for the first end good start for Andy Smith it’s a two and we’re off and running so both of these two is it’s fantastic now David has been bowling for 19 years and Andy fber both of them assistant coaches at their respective clubs which is absolutely Sensational to see these two giving back to their club and the sport that they’ve come to know and love and again like our coaches our umpires they’re all normally volunteers at their clubs so they’re giving up their time to help other people learn the sport and uh improve their games along way and whilst they’re coaching they’re also coaching themselves it’s a it’s a great way to learn yourself is to become a coach and teach the basics of course it is and Andy was saying uh saying before that you know he ends up you know he’s come up every year he was and how much he loves this Sport and you talk about the coaching getting people to stick to Basics but he got 15 shots in his last round and he was just so happy to get to 15 and that’s what that’s what this tournament is all about as V nearly blows Loy off his chair with that sneeze I had to like rush to get rid of what I was about to what I was saying to get the headphones off and then sneeze into my arm and probably heard it through the effects Mike but yeah this this type of Championship it it’s great to play your own club championships and whatnot but it’s fantastic to have the this offering in our sport where you can come away spend two weeks either playing watching or officiating in a tournament like this like there’s 3,900 participants all up I think and you just walk away with that warm and fuzzy feeling no matter what you do whether you win lose or draw you’re getting to see the best of our Sport and you really are of course and a big thank you to Marcus Seer as well he’s uh he’s our he’s all the way here from South Perth and look at what he’s wearing Hollywood he’s got the national umpire kit the new Puma National umpire kit how good it look a it looks amazing now I went full Postman Pat with all of those we had them all come into the office and we packed them individually and I went and delivered them personally to about five respective post boxes in the area because I had four big bags full driving around doing some nighttime sightseeing around my area the pumar is fan fantastic it is so good of course he can grab some of that pum gear in the tent here in the Marquee might do a social media video and take you through exactly what’s in that Marquee at some stage over the next few days because there is plenty there of course our great Partners at right at home aica Arrow bows they’re all there plus all other different Bowl suppliers sporty leisures in as well he’s made that shter this championship’s been played across 14 clubs on the goal Coast I know it’s so good each Club has something different to offer as well and just real heart and soul people at each of those clubs that will do anything for you and just do anything for this sport nice definitely and it is it is the greatest show piece that we have uh like we have our bpls we have World bows and all those type of championships and competitions that go on but I don’t think you can beat the Australian Open for what it offers just a local Club bowler not like we’re saying in the first game not any bow or tennis player or golfer or darts player in in the world can go to a national CH or World Championship type of atmosphere like this and play against the best Bowlers in the world or the best best players or athletes in their sport bows offers that every year Nathan Wilson asking what time the Marquee closes I believe it’s around 5:00 that it closes so get here before then it generally runs until close of play normal business hours yep so 9 to5 head up and grab a couple of things there’s a couple of things I got my eye on Hollywood one of those long sleeve numbers that they’ve got in there it’s a great choice of apparel and product and then also our Partnerships with u r at home yep and Ora go see Lucas protop papus although I haven’t seen him do much in that ride at home Marque yet so hopefully he’s in there doing a bit of work so one more to Andy Smith he takes a 30 lead after two ends over David limb suppose we put a backet of biscuits in there’ be 100% Lucas does Love A Biscuit who doesn’t though what’s what’s your before we get back to the balls what’s your biscuit of choice can’t go past the Tim Pam yeah it’s probably there’s three for me the digestives love some of those chocolate Scotch fingers and then a Tim tan they make a a triple chocolate chip cookie in New Zealand the that I my partner was rooming with a with a kiwi and uh go into Costco and you can buy these big bags of them they are Sensational yeah I don’t actually a good the Kohl’s brand choc chip cookies as well yep in the Box yep wonderful back to the because I am now starving and it’s my own fault so I’m on a on a diet at the moment so thinking about biscuits is not probably the best way to go so first bow little bit wward from Andy David Lim looking to try and hone in and grab a shot of his own still hasn’t scored yet he’s got the right line on this one whether he’s got the speed of course you mentioned the right line balls Australia’s official podcast can get that wherever you get your podcast from there it is Spotify Apple Google 95 episodes Hollywood almost ready for your 100th mate yes to get a cricket bat take a just bring it with me wherever I go that day it’s just going to slip underneath he’s found the line again as he corrected his speed that’s where they’re coming from some really good turnout there on that beach side of the green green starting to pick up some Pace now that the sun’s it’s getting direct sunlight so Bondi Bowling Club not far from Bondi Beach at all just a couple of blocks away Warner Avenue North Bondi looks like an absolutely beautiful setting there haven’t actually been to the club but I’ve been to Bondi and knowing how nice the area is sure the club’s going to be pretty good too as Andy still got shot there won’t take a lot of Correction here from David corfield Park Bowling Club just in corfield north and balaclava Road in Melbourne if you want to head down there not too far from dandong Road very good part of the world some great cafes in corfield not too far from the race course as well and he still holding shot that surprises me I thought that ball of Davids was be shot but this is where it can be confusing live streaming the the cameras can be very very deceiving it took me a really long time to get my angles right as this one here from Andy s underneath yes great shot and that might just be the two I do a bit of live streaming with the go Coast Association stuff when they do state championships and the like and that I’ve leared to not to go out and call a shot until it’s actually been put up in the air y can make a fool of you very very quickly and but as long as you don’t take it too seriously when you make the mistake is Dave very close very close so what is the end verdict going to be we know Andy Lim or sorry Andy Smith is going to collect again is it a one or is it a two I’ve been hearing the marker right should be two deliberation commences tape comes out cu on screen that front uh gray ball which looks blue on the screen looks closest but it’s not two more to Randy Smith taking score along to 5 nil he’s won all three ends so far has Andy Smith Anthony cier commenting how good is bow such a beautiful yet simple yet tactical game and a game where anyone could compete against the world champion so unique I love it don’t we all it’s a sport that can take your heart as it has done with Andy Smith he only started bowling five years ago and he’s as passionate as anyone having a chat to him and David just before the contest started they both great fellas and it’s I’m really impressed to see how passionate they both are for the sport because this these are the people that you love when you see the Australian Open this is who this tournament is for correct 100% uh giving everybody an equal footing like it’s it’s a gender neutral sport as well uh so when we see the ladies tomorrow in the pairs you’ll get to see just how high the skill level they are as well yep it’s just we use the same equipment on the same surfaces so there’s just no bias whatsoever it’s just down to the pure skill and talent of each person that there is a bias correct it’s just how you master that bias in my case I don’t I’ve seen you bowl Hollywood you’re not as bad as you say you are I try and give it a crack there was a time but I 34 years I’ve been playing this Sport and uh I’ve still got the same passion I had it from from day one as to now actually probably even more y I like to help all my clubs and and other Bowlers while there I coach as well as as hold my role with the bows Australia do as I say not as I do it’s like that with a lot of things as Andy Smith smth pulls up in time Come On Dave sneak up on your last one line was good just needs a couple more feet of weight yeah lock lock is uh giving me some good information I thought so but I wasn’t 100% sure you had a pretty good pairs run last year round a 16 yeah I got got lucky had a very good skip that carried me oh no we had a good time it was good fun uh he couldn’t make it up this year so i’ I’ve uh missed out on playing myself but gives me an opportunity to come out here and speak to everybody about the game and what we do with bows Australia and then showcase the talent of our Bowlers that we have here in the being the number one country in the world as well we we have the best conditions we have the best greens so we should be the best and David Lim he’s the best at the moment because he’s holding shot thanks to His Brilliant second bow he did correct a couple of feet coming out nice and smooth just needs to do it again he’s not going to be too far away sneaking up on it yeah good shot that’s two so now well if I’m Andy maybe if he can see if he can try and get that Jack come around on the on the forehand the left-hander come around on the forehand TR the Jack back follow it through he wasn’t far away with his second ball so has to be inch perfect it’s coming around I think this one might not reach it’s going to drop short so an opportunity for a third here for David Lim or even if he sneaks past that and sits that back ball he can make it into a four to be honest but he’s going to take the backand and like the sa safer option nickname limbo Dave being a right-hander and any being a left-hander so backhand and forehand on the same Wing might some confuse a few of the spectators for a little bit so that won’t do it’s going to be a two to David Lim but he’s on the board 52 after four ends in favor of Andy Smith as that Sun starts to beat down nice ly so there it is those blue paddles raised The Loft for the first time was talking to Andy as to why he chose that color ball and he asked his Club what what’s the color that nobody buys and they said that color he’s like all right I’ll grab that wanted that point of difference actually don’t mind the red and the white well if you’re a St George supporter or a Sydney Swans supporter well if you’re a Sydney Swans supporter you’re sitting pretty happily at the top of the ladder you know the only team that’s beaten in this year Hollywood Richmond you being a tragic would know that well considering we’ve only won two games this year I’d uh I’d know all about the ones that we’ve won being a line supporter it’s not been too much better had a massive win last week against the doggies yep not still the same round actually today with the King’s Birthday clash between Melbourne and Collingwood of course the big freeze as well fight M andd it’s a great cause yeah I don’t know if I’d want to be sliding down that slide I wouldn’t mind it just to see but then I’d immediately regret it that sudden jolt at the end yeah not just being a sudden jolt but freezing at the same time you would certainly want a nice big dressing to jump into once you got out of that water yep and a nice coffee to warm you down afterwards so I think I’d be going alcoholic so it’s this is this is much better from David Lim he’s found his range and I think the most important part about that side of the green is getting your grass line because it just seems to be taking plenty I don’t even think the breeze is coming from that quadrant can’t actually see a flag where I’m sitting but no it’s one of the only parts of the Gren where you can’t really see the flags or broad Beach sorry the club Andy Smith looking to sit something here if he can he’ll be in for shot and well played back Hopper very well played he’s in good territory again watch this come home limbo oh get that one in here well played that is amazing played it to Perfection going to force Andy onto his left-handed backand Andy Smith raced out up to a 5-0 lead after three David Lim secured Two Shots going to dive just underneath I think unless he’s got good weight good effort a very good effort just needs a small correction have a look at this replay here Hollywood you called it to Perfection you said it halfway down the rink that he was in a good area just glad he backed me up those early calls sometimes can go I tend to try and you know look at their weight and see how they’re going but this one just coming underneath so Andy Smith an opportunity for him to get back on the board and see if he can conjure some magic very methodical release he’s got his he’s got his pre-shot routine and he’s on that routine does it with each ball which is what you need to be doing David actually went to go grab the mat but he was still in his release pose sort of like a cricketer when they strike a four that won’t do so one more to David Lim 53 after five a bit like our first uh game this morning whoever seems to get the M gets on a bit of a run yeah we had three ends on the bounce to start from Andy two in a row for David both of them are retired and he was in sales and David was in it of course BPL cup Hollywood love it that’s coming up in November get your regos in you could be like those three gentlemen there from edong playing on the TV rink at Club Pine Rivers during BPL 20 and that’s the BPL you want to be at Hollywood because you know why 12 teams yes the new new format or not new format two new teams this year adds another lot of excitement six new players two new teams new theme songs yep jalon Jets and the Sydney Saints looking forward to that first one the between the Sydney Lions and the Sydney Saints Club Mount leis and St John’s Park compete against each other very regularly up there or down there there we’re in the go coast of Sydney South yep just falling short now but for those wanting to compete in the BPL cup jump on the balls Australia website have a look at under BPL cup and find out whether there’s a venue nearest to you so that you can enter into a qualifying tournament see if Andy can improve on his first ball he certainly got his ball on the right area it’s tracking nicely may just run through great attempt feel like David is the one that’s calling all the shots at the moment he’s absolutely zoned in they found the grass line which is halfway there I think here on these broad Beach greens because if you miss underneath you certainly Miss by a Long Way Green Run that true and speed starting to pick up we’ve we’ve gone from a nice Pace this morning and this is now really just starting to finish off at the last 8 or 10 ft of the B it kind of it makes you want to get out there doesn’t it it certainly does have a bit of a r given this every opportunity again is he going to sit the ball he is he has yeah that’ll do that’s one David return serve one left in the tank for both well on his speed here Hollywood he’s not far away oh what a shot well played pontis Palmquist his teammate sitting up there on the decking he enjoyed it quick high five on the bank Andy Smith and the friendships you can develop through the sport and meeting all these people each year they come back year after year and catch up with friends that they may not see for 12 months or is he just slips past there so that’ll be one more 54 is the score favor of Andy Smith somehow he’s still in front yep but and that’s the thing Hollywood you’re right we saw in 20 21 the peirs team of Cody Packer and Matt Johnston they actually played each other in singles in 2019 and said you know we had a great game we got along really well let’s play PA together and ended up winning the title yep it’s it’s a lot of stories like that even just in cluband but it’s just striking up that friendship getting out there the quader between the players is normally brilliant I mean you’re meeting people from all over the world let alone within Australia at the last game as well we and I just when I was down at ugan on on T on Saturday helping with the tournament down there West Australians and new zealanders queenslanders victorians new South wsman the Old South Australian y but it’s just great to see that you can all come to this beautiful location here on the go Coast play the sport that we love on surfaces that are pristine throughout the 14 clubs which is fantastic T Li he he’s Zed in both of these two looking to get their first win of the competition and needing that win too because you can get thr and two wins in a section certainly can if you can get a big one it’s even more beneficial this is the first time we’ve seen a ball come down this side of the ground for a while well and again you’ve really got to throw it out there and Trust the green for it to come back and it will it’s a smell of food waffs through it’s quite nice whatever that is this one in the area again yeah muscle memory just promotes his own David Li that’s going to help Andy a bit now it’s giving him a shelf on that side of the green so can he can play it with a bit more confidence out there just the ball and the jack to hit now I think he’s given this one a bit more air see what he can do Andy Smith very good line just a little bit overweight a lot overweight really come off the bank there stayed on Dave’s going to have to try and get one behind and count on this wi side bit of protection sticks with his forehand he’s got nice territory on this ball yeah this will come around just wants to be clearing his front ball yep finishing in there and it stops in a good position so that’ll be three at the moment pressure Smith really needs to nail this yep pressure right on Andy here could see his lead dissipate very quickly if he doesn’t get one somewhere close this time looks like he’s cut that line again he might see he cut it down to two Force David to turn over onto the backand slow start from David Lim but he’s making sure that he’s made up for it very close here found the Gap through he wouldn’t have minded a little Trail there could have made four not at that speed I don’t think it might have gone a little that Jack would have traveled a fair ways and uh and he’s got two sitting right back there so probably a good miss so to keep his lead Andy Smith it’s coming around going to need the Jack and all of it got it but how far did it go still two just in a held we had helensville and a couple of other clubs that were helping out as well just rolls through a little bit but on a good line so David limb down 5-0 he’s rectified that 65 should just die underneath or is he going to get a piece he got a piece got a piece but pushed it towards David limsy Smith this is well grass he’s going to run through again though one in one out Aaron jaros watching on the plane back to Sydney he played think a couple of yesterday or a couple of days ago great to have seen you and your name back on the Australian Open list Aaron and sure you’d be watching us from a couple more gym sessions I know you like to watch ringside in the gym this one just going to tuck around the back for Andy Smith probably the shortest length they’ve played so far so it’s found both of them out that little bit especially now that the green is freeing up that little bit as well will this get down doesn’t want to knock that in just moves past Miss he’s got territory right just a bit quick again big opportunity here now for if he gets hold of that Jack we could be on for a three low scoring Affair so far this one needs to get down it might just come little start there see what Dave can do in retaliation looks like it’s coming in nicely it’s going to slip through yeah a lot of a lot of players from Malaysia have come down had iron Nabil Tami and Alina nowi they’ve come down and also got isadul Kepler in the men’s singles he’s a finalist at the world champion of champions and made the final at the world bows indoor championship in gery earlier this year has lost both of those in a tie break that world title surely not far away lost to best here in the quarterfinals last year this is a great start for Andy Smith wish da to change his hand if he’s got the right speed that should come back a little heavy again oh heavier the Green’s in that transitional time for the speed as well so it’s going to slowly pick up well actually it’s picked up quite drastically from this morning to now City zelen armad she’s also playing very very very accomplished bowler com games World Champs AO she can do it all now you’re just showing off I’m not even going to attempt to it unless I have to there’s a couple of tennis ones out there until session three today what have you done to me what’s locked on to you here’s a good ball he’s needed this is it going to hang around it has so we’ve got Peter lucat up against Mark Nim kovich Peter and mark That’s All Right a chance here for Andy just arrive up onto the shot ball or it can just sneak underneath it in a little touch of that Jack to turn a one down into a three up can he do Shake of his head as he let it go so I’m not sure what that meant can he do it and get it back to level pegging and he’s not going to get there so one down again for Andy Smith and it’s six ends in a row 95 Dave seems be just getting that one in there on on Andy um and he’s just got to hold hold fast and keep keep tapping away um same thing happened this morning yep but this momentum is well and truly with the Bondi product he’s got a nice smattering of fans here on the deck jooy some Beverages and some food on this p picturesque new broad Beach renovation and doesn’t it look wonderful it is amazing I didn’t think about our grand stands though taking away a bit of space for our grand stands so now the grand stands usually go we’ll on the green we’ll have one out on the green this this year for sure but uh the one we normally have clubside is there’s not going to not going to fit that’s a great start here Dave’s really found it now playing shorsh ends on a quickish type of surface pushing up around the 15 15 and a half second Mark for those that uh understand that understand that terminology so Andy Smith this one might be a little tight but it’s coming he’s close just slid underneath the ball gave his ball a chance great great effort David Lim I think he would love a big multiple here no one has scored more than a two if he’s got the speed he’s going to be very close well he’s got his line right it’s enough for two be anything more than well he’s only bow two so definitely can’t be anything more than that how am I going today on fire and he’s got this on a really good line his weight looks okay too hello more than okay here we go um going to give David something to beat now I think yes but when you give him something to beat in the last six ends he’s obliged he’s been up to it very much looking forward to seeing what he can do here still got two left in the tank again he’s got another good line David Lim whatever you can do I can do better did it roll too far did we give him did we go the early Crow no he’s given it to the blue just but he doesn’t need to do much more he can just sit the last bow that he bows can Andy Smith and he must be thinking what do I have to do I’ve held good shots mhm but David’s just leading me to the punch in the end is up 5 Z if he gets around that front one he’s going to be very close and he’s got around the front one and he is very close Hollywood great shot so what does David Lim do here I think he’s just got to add a little bit of weight to the last line he had and sneak under the ball or sit the ball clean I wouldn’t be changing too much if I was David Mar Marcus C says I favor yours for second but I would measure so there is a slight possibility that he’s down to here needs to make this count oh has he got the speed thinking not not the hold that line anyway speed was probably pretty good for the shot so now Andy Smith has a chance does he go for that bow that could be second shot maybe knock it away and stay for possibly three well I’d be playing for the wider line for protection to start with because that’s David’s ball on the way in oh boy he doesn’t want to hit it does not want to hit it knocks his own in a little risky so is it one or two we do know that he’s back on the board and that’s a big positive for him being played in a great spirit both of them having huge Smiles on their faces so one taken out they’re going to measure for two so if he gets a second here it’s only 97 considering he’s lost the last three ends Andy Smith would be chuffed with that if he can get a double very reminiscent of our first game this morning yep the patterns are eily similar looks like two well Andy thinks it is Andy handsome measure over and says if you want to confirm that is more than okay steady hands required making sure he gets the nearest point to the jack with the measure yep it is two there you go so he’s back on the board for the first time since end three this was n 10 let’s see what he does with this mat 97 I’d be surprised if he stayed with the shorter lengths I’d imagine need to try and stretch it out a bit he’s taking the M right back to the T still Hollywood nobody has scored more than a two it’s a good way to play singles just keep your balls in there don’t concede big scores because then if you can get a two of your own it’s like gold he’s taking the mat back but I don’t think he’s thrown the Jack all that far yeah it’s another small length I it’s been a while since he’s had the jack in his hand so sometimes you think you’re throwing it at a longer distance but it’s not so let’s see where this ends up going and how Andy Smith can rebound from losing six straight ends from N4 to N9 was up 5-0 down 59 Ed a two this not a bad start just missing first ball so being so important in a game of singles is you really want to try and get a little closer than that with your first one so gives David a little bit more of a relaxed opportunity to take advantage of and if he’s got good speed that should come back a fair distance yet just needed a little bit more but it’ll do for one that’s for sure I really do think this is just over minimum length so it’s it’s a and on a 16c is type of green it’s it’s a very touch type of an end this looks very good still just slipping through that little bit but a nice little catchment building David’s thinking about that something behind would be advantageous you would think doesn’t really have to change too much off his first ball looks like he’s made the correction on his line as it comes in nicely although it does set up a bit of a target for Andy So currently got two here David Lim what is Andy Smith me a little bit he’s been going so well on these shorter length ends and now all of a sudden he’s throwing the Jack long trying to stunt the rhythm of Andy Smith keep him on their toes very interested with the outcome after this end because he could be could be kicking himself after this you I know it’s an early call but when you normally got the momentum on short lengths or on a particular length and then you choose to change it that’s very unusual I think there were three short or two really short balls there so I thought maybe maybe he’s just doing something to give himself more of a judgment of the weight I don’t know but we’ll see cuz Andy’s been pushing them long he has so this I would think would favor Andy unless he continues to push long at either length but uh I think it’ be easier for Andy to correct David could have me eing my words very quickly and he’s on a good line speed doesn’t look too bad neither lovely correction sneaks its way up well played so he’s in one
