now La had some serious cap issues so they traded Keenan Allen released Mike Williams chose not to sign Austin Eckler and restructured Joey Bose and khil Max contracts the Chargers had a good draft taking tackled Joe Al fifth overall trading up to Draft wide receiver lad makoni and drafting linebacker Junior Coulson out of Michigan who Harbaugh was familiar with in the third round Chargers white out Josh Palmer talked about the new approach in La I tell the biggest difference is there’s a there’s a large emphasis on the details um extreme emphasis on the details more than any team i’ I’ve been a part of um from college to high school to anything it’s the most detailed oriented emphasis I’ve been a part of so I would say that’s the that’s the that’s the biggest difference it’s it’s blaring that you can’t miss it if you’re in a building with us sounds like Harbaugh let’s bring Dan graciano back in here it gr the Chargers paid Justin Herbert last off season but this seems like an offense built to run the ball should should we expect that when it comes to what we’ll see on the field I think at the beginning yes I mean look they drafted offensive line high in the first round uh they did take a receiver in the second but that the receiving group’s unproven yet I mean Josh Palmer is entering his fourth NFL season so he should be ready to take a step forward he’s been behind the depth chart behind Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on the dep chart his whole career no longer the case Quenton Johnson was a first round pick a year ago Chargers have high hopes for him and of course lad makoni who they drafted in the second round this year so it’s a receiver group that has potential but right now I would say the expectation people have about the Chargers offense is it probably leans more toward the Run game while that passing game sorts itself out in terms of roles and what those guys are able to do yeah there’s nothing to sort out Dan Graziano this is going to be a run first football team period And the reason I say that is this I go back to offensive coordinator Greg Roman who was with Jim Harbaugh when he was the head coach in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014 was also with him with the card Stanford as well but I played against those teams year in and year out and they were run first run heavy they went and they got Dobbins in the offseason they went traded away all their receivers they went and drafted Joe alt an offensive tackle not a quarterback not a receiver first in their first round pick and so they will be a run first team we just talked about Blake corm at Michigan Jim Harbaugh was his coach they ran let me put my coach Prime on run the D ball they running the DAR football that’s what they are going to do and so it’s not going to it’s not about like finding a receiver and finding a fit no this is going to be a physical run the ball down your throat football team it’s who Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman have always been yeah I think that’s going to be as as both of you have said at least at the beginning of the Season kind of the ammo over the Chargers I will note this though hard to run the football if you’re not playing with the lead and they play in the division that has the best team in professional sports right now the Kansas City Chiefs moreover while Jim Harbaugh has played a certain way both the pro and college level I’m not sure he’s ever had a quarterback as gifted of a thrower as he has right now in Justin Herbert I don’t think you put $52 million a year into a guy then say hey let’s put the lambo in the garage for the season and while I know Ravens fans will be incredibly frustrated to have to reminisce about some of the passing game Concepts they had under Greg Roman it is worth noting that Lamar Jackson Who of course is the greatest running quarterback of all time also had a 36 passing touchdown season the first time he was named the NFL’s MVP in which he led the NFL and passing touchdowns so I keep thinking about this on paper this feels like a team that is going to regress in terms of its passing game proficiency And yet when you have Justin Herbert kind of anything is possible because at the very best of Justin Herbert Laura we have seen a player who I know he needs more wins but his brightest moments are in that top five to seven quarterback in the entire NFL yeah top seven what are you talking about Herbert is amazing and Elite listen there’s a lot of confusion here and when I said top seven he’s top five he’s an amazing quarterback this is the way it is har harball understands that you want to establish the run because that opens up the doors for a great Elite passing game when especially you have Justin Herbert he also understands that you just because your quarterback is amazing and has a great arm and can throw throw throw throw throw doesn’t mean that you need that you want to rely on your quarterback to throw the ball a 100 times every single game game in and game out that’s not how you win football games no matter who you are whether it’s Patrick Mahomes Tom Brady Payton Manning Brett Favre whoever past for um present you don’t do that it’s just too much it’s too easy to prepare for even just from from a defensive perspective it it drains out your quarterback you you want to establish the Run game you need to have a balance I mean you can obviously have a pass heavy offense but it still needs to be balanced Balan doesn’t mean equal okay um and not to mention you can establish the Run game and it doesn’t mean that you can run first and have that emphasis but it doesn’t mean that the passing isn’t why you’re winning or why you’re actually a great team it just means you’re establishing the Run even if it’s just three four five yards a carry it’s establishing that so now defenses have to play in a certain way when you don’t have a run game we see this all the time no matter again how great the quarterback is when you don’t have an established Run game it’s just all bets are off for the quarterback for the offense because the defense just knows to get after the quarterback they just know and then it’s just so much pressure and I don’t care how good of a quarterback you are it’s really hard to have every you know every other down is just second and 10 second and 13 third and eight when you just have to constantly throw the ball throw the ball throw the ball you constantly have to get these eight nine 10 15 yard pickups again I don’t care who you are it’s exhausting it’s too it’s too much no matter how great even if you pay that quarterback $900 billion doar a game it doesn’t matter it’s not the way you play winning football and I also use this example all the time how have the chiefs started winning football with Patrick Mahomes they pulled Patrick Mahomes back they brought him back they said you’re amazing you’re great you can do everything let’s take some emphasis off you because you’re so magical so great the way how we really get to take advantage of that is getting everything else established so we use your greatness not to keep us always in games but to just get us over that hump so then they can’t stop us as long as we’re in the game we know you’re the Difference Maker we don’t make Patrick momes the reason why we’re only in a game the only reason why we’re in a game to begin with this is what they’ve done with either Josh Allen Justin Herbert it’s just you have to be the reason why we’re even in the game that’s what they do that’s what the Chargers have done with Justin Herbert that’s what the bills have done with Josh Allen we’re only in this game because of your greatness when that’s the case it’s really hard now to have that same greatness now get you over the hump to truly win to truly get to AFC Championship Games Super Bowls whatever that’s not what the the Kansas City Chiefs do with Patrick Mahomes that’s not what the Patriots did with Tom Brady with Payton Manning right again we can name all these quarterbacks who’ve had obviously high levels of success they’re not in those games just because of course undeniably there are games where they’re just in it because of the greatness of a Josh Allen Patrick Mahomes whoever right but that’s not sustainable you can’t build a team or an offense to do that and that’s what especially these defensive head coaches always do when they have a great quarterback they say oh defense is the best you need defense defense wins championships we got a great quarterback he’ll keep us in the game it’s all the other stuff we need to worry about no make the job easier for the quarterback that’s what the Texans are doing with CJ strad and it’s genius they’re getting other weapons it’s what the Eagles did with uh Jaylen Herz a couple years ago when they went out and got AJ Brown this year when they now went out and got saquon Barkley That’s what you do that’s what Harbaugh is doing he’s building the offensive line he’s building a run game he’s getting you know he’s he’s making he wants to make life easier for Justin Herbert because when Justin Herbert’s not being crushed now because any quarterback would be crushed he now gets to breathe he now gets to play you know football that he knows the field gets to open up with him the Playbook gets to open up for him the offensive scheming gets to open up for him the defenses can be a lot more manageable to deal with priest snap reads all of this all of it just opens up and it can’t be understated so this idea that like well hey you know Justin Herbert’s so great like why are we running or or you know they’re going to be a run forward offense make no mistake about it they’re going to try to establish this run game and even Lean On The Run game so they can utilize Justin Herbert’s greatness not to hide his lack of greatness or any of this other nonsense Justin Herbert will be Unleashed Justin Herbert will make that play because that’s what you’re asking that’s what you ask Patrick Mahomes to do you ask him to make that crazy great throw and let’s not even think about him like extending the play and scrambling and doing a sidearm thing or this side sometimes you’re just asking him to make the right throw that that will change the game and the the best example of most recently to me was really against the Baltimore Ravens in the playoff game to finally to ice the game to make it just you know it was over it was a perfect call Up by Andy re and a perfect throw forgot who we threw too um but it was perfect that’s all they needed for Patrick Mahomes really theoretically that game they didn’t need too much Patrick Mahomes magic they didn’t need Mahomes to throw for 300 plus yards and four touchdowns they didn’t need that but they needed that throw they needed that perfect throw that’s what they get with Justin Herbert that’s what Harbaugh is trying to create he’s trying to create an environment that when we call Herbert’s number up we didn’t have to call his number up 50 times that game we just have to call it a handful of times a game and when you’re an elite player like a Herbert you get to do this floor you you you bring the Baseline up you minimize those mistakes you do the right thing more often than not and when we need you to truly be elite to truly take us over the edge we know that you’re going to do it that’s what it comes down to and that’s what’s going to happen with the Chargers and that’s what’s going to happen with Herbert and Jim Harbaugh but those
