‘Super seniors’ highlight weekly Peoria Women’s Golf League
golf is filled with numbers scores tea times handicaps players in the oldest golf league in Poria are enjoying the early days of the golf season and some are proving the adage age is just a number if it’s Wednesday you know where to find Virginia Henderson playing in the Peoria women’s golf league where she’s played for 54 years if golf is a passion for anyone like it is for me it doesn’t make any difference as long as you can play golf you know and you uh and you got the course that you want to beat you know but you can’t Henderson and her golf playing buddies are part of a weekly women’s golf league founded in 1936 that’s before the LPGA was established and she’s one of three super seniors here wonderfully there are three women in their ’90s still playing regularly in the league I’ve had two concerns in my life one is to be bored and the other is to be uh incapacitated and I think it’s a challenge at this point just to be able to play it’s a game that you play for yourself you don’t play anybody else’s game they don’t play yours you play your your yourself and I like that cuz self is not doing very well right [Laughter] now at one point there were 100 players in the league and a waiting list to get in 70 years years ago prizes included cigarettes now the ladies play for fun enjoy the fellowship and have lunch afterwards when I was playing good when I was young I wanted to par every hole and now that I’m older I just hope I get a par [Laughter] that’s the pury women’s golf league plays Wednesday mornings at pu pares at golf courses into the fall
