the back on get up and on this very busy day there’s a lot of football out there with OTAs starting all over the place so Tim Hasselbeck let’s do some QB quick reads you think Caleb Williams can take this Bears team to the playoffs as a rookie well I understand the question because it’s not a typical situation number one overall pick goes to a team that’s probably better equipped to compete that being said I think you just look at the division it’s too tough So my answer is no Green Bay is gonna be really good Detroit’s going to be really good and I think because of the challenges in that Division I think that’s ultimately what keep Chicago out of the playoffs certainly won’t be easy and you don’t mention Minnesota but they may also be good if their rookie quarterback plays well so let’s go to them next do you think JJ McCarthy should be their starter right off the bat I do and listen I’ve been you know kind of saying this for a while in terms of like you get better by playing and if you’re worried about playing a guy too early because it’s going to ruin him then you probably didn’t draft the right guy so I think I look at the situation in Minnesota and then I look at the type of prospect McCarthy is which is a guy that played at a big program that’s been well coached like he’s more of a readymade prospect than somebody that needs to develop and so I think when you look at it through that lens it just makes the most sense to put him in there right away and let him learn on the job it’s an interesting one let’s come back to that one another day cuz I’d like to talk more about it but let’s go then to this one he’s most certainly not a rookie do you think Russell Wilson should be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh week one if you’re going to have both Justin fields and Russell Wilson on the roster then I think that Russell Wilson needs to be your starter week one I I just I don’t see an environment where Russell Wilson is the backup and it’s good for your football team with Justin Fields as a starter both quarterbacks there I think it’s important for people to remember this both guys are there playing for their next contract yeah they’re playing for the the Steelers but they’re really playing for their next contract and I think that Dynamic is going to be fascinating that’s why I think Russ if he’s on the roster with Fields needs to be the starter okay now that is really interesting that is the first time anyone has said that on this show and it’s the first time I’ve thought about it that way I may be changing on the Fly where we’re going to go here because I think that is an interesting place to go understanding Team Dynamics Dominique as you do I I think what Tim is saying makes sense which is to say Russell Wilson as the starter and Justin Fields as the backup nipping at his heels you know trying to get out there that makes sense Justin Field’s winning that job outright and Russell Wilson at this stage of his life and career being the backup from the moment the season starts I hadn’t really thought of it this way that does not seem like a situation that is that is destined to work what do you think of that thought NE yeah yeah I I think think that this is one of those situation where there is no right answer but I think part part of what Tim’s rationale is at least I’m assuming a bit of this is that one of these guys is going to start and both of them might have some struggles going from Russell to Fields is a better position to be in than having Fields out there and having Fields struggle with Russell breathing down his neck I think best case scenario is Justin Fields is your starter at some point because the ceiling is higher on a player that you could argue hasn’t gotten a fair shot in the league and is on the ascent no one’s arguing that Russell Wilson is going to get better like we recognize that at this point in his career he’s at his he’s on a decline like this is the the backside of his career and I think that’s part of the expectation is at some point you’re switching from one quarterback to the other and you’d like to be switching to someone who you think can be your long-term answer which I don’t believe that anyone thinks Russell Wilson is at this point in his career get in here Jeff yeah I’m always fascinated by that Dynamic and how it plays into the actual decision-making process you know we’re talking about the court of public opinion in some ways about how that sort of works out Mike Tomlin does not feel like the type that would cave but when you do lay out each possible scenario it does feel like the best of I guess three scenarios is the idea that Russell Wilson starts week one struggles and then Justin Fields replace him as a star I guess the best scenario for the Steelers is Russell Wilson starting week one and starting week 18 and leading them into the playoffs and then of course the third which we mentioned would be the idea of Justin Fields starting the season that does not feel to Tim’s Point like the best option Tim I’m fascinated by this and you understand the Dynamics of this having been in those quarterback rooms for as long as you have look I give Russell Wilson all the credit in the world he’s become someone that it’s somewhat fashionable to take shots at but frankly he could have walked away from the NFL and still gotten paid every bit as much this year as he is getting paid to play so um he clearly wants to be out there he’s playing because he loves playing and wants to play give him all the credit in the world that said it’s tough for me to Envision a scenario where he is happy satisfied or fulfilled being the backup quarterback to Justin fields in Pittsburgh right now that that feels like a a long way to try and go Tim listen and greeny that’s why my posture on the Russell Wilson situation was look I’m not sure he was playing football this year because I I forget the number now we’re almost numb to it $50 million or something like that that he was going to get paid whether he was sitting at home or playing football and so the fact that he’s you know playing for league minimum for the Pittsburgh Steelers and we can put playing in quotations if Justin Fields is a starting quarterback look $1 million is a fine salary for a lot of people but not for a guy you know that’s made you know well over $200 million playing the game of football like Russell Wilson has so like that’s the part of it yes he deserves a lot of credit there’s a huge risk in this for Russell to do what he’s done and so with that if he is not the guy I mean I I just I don’t know how you respond and overcome from that and yeah that can affect your football team yeah uh Dominique a final word yeah I mean I I think the best case scenario is eventually Justin Fields takes over because we recognize that the ceiling is higher on that team if his athleticism combined with The Playmakers they have can match up well with that talented defense then they could make a run in the AFC I don’t think I don’t see a scenario where Russell Wilson is the starting quarterback and they make a run in the AFC against the quarterbacks that they have to face and I understand the ceiling is a lot higher for Justin Fields but the floor is a lot lower for him also so it’s a risk that they have to take and it’s a hard decision to make I would think going into this season [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]

  1. He should be worried…and that's worrisome because fields is trash too lol….wilson is washed…and fields is never gonna reach even wilsons level.

  2. By Tim's logic, we should give up now and not even try to compete because the division is too hard. Guess what, every division game is hard. Maybe the division will be hard for Detroit too?

  3. The biggest part of it all is the Steelers brought Russell in first with the intention of him being the starter. Justin came to the Steelers knowing that Russell was already in the building, so it makes sense to rock with Russell and that's what we're doing. In addition, Russell was recently more productive in the touchdown throwing department by tossing 26 and running for another 3. That is a significant upgrade for our Steelers compared to last year. Both Russ & Justin had lesser talent around them last year so they both can do better in Pittsburgh, but Russell is not going to allow Justin to become the starter; however, I would HIGHLY advise Arthur Smith to produce some frequent packages to get Justin Fields on the field. It's great for the team because Russell cannot get complacent knowing who's next in the bullpen. My biggest fear are my fellow Steelers fans who are impatient and will start chanting or booing Russell and calling for Justin should Russell have a bad play or two. The same fans that booed and called for Kenny knowing that Mason was the best option…but they woke up at the end of last season. Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson.

  4. Seriously, i am a UK NFL fan but ESPN are the only network or let me clarify Greeny is the only one continyally pushing this…why?

  5. Russell Wilson is an experiement & Justin Fields is a future journeymen bridge QB, like Fitzpatrick, Brissett, Bridgwater etc. It was a desperation move by Mike Tomlin, because he is on the hot seat & the Pittsburgh Steelers organization is good at keeping quiet about it, nobody does anything like that unless your job is on the line.

  6. CMON MAN this is a dumb topic. The best man wins the starting roll. Wilson Vs Fields let training camp determine the outcome. Anyone could get injured and change the whole discussion period. 🎤🫳🏻 Mic Drop 😎🤘

  7. As a Steelers fan it’s in our best interest for the qb in their 20’s to win the job over one in their 30’s …. But, that’s not realistic, Russ is the starter and will be the starter unless an injury happens or Justin has an extremely giant leap in his abilities as a passer

  8. Sorry Tim but if bears don't make the playoffs the coach will be fired then maybe we will be it 🤡

  9. JJ a ready qb? Homie is 21, and saying if you gotta sit him you probably drafted the wrong guy… huh!? How is this on espn i swear its a joke

  10. RUSS WINS GAMES & SB
    Jus ain't that … yet.
    No comparison n o comparison.
    OWNER DEMANDING SB NOW.
    That takes Pros ONLY.
    RUSS can do that.
    Jus can't period.

  11. I need something to happen to some other team so they can stop talking about this already. Jesus Christ.

  12. Enough already. There are over thirty NFL teams out there, and yet it's the same ol talk about Russell Wilson. "He washed, the Steelers will regret signing him."Why are you people so negative about Russell. Try talking about another quarterback. It's really sad that you always try to tear this man down. Is it for ratings? This is what people want to listen to? All this talk from all the commentaries becomes one big noise. Also, Russell Wilson is being paid . the Broncos. I think all this negativity about Russell Wilson is really not necessary. If Russell fails this year, then the whole world will have something to talk about. So, let's just wait and see. You may be surprised to see that he is still a viable quarterback.

  13. Greeny is bias. I wonder when he did he turn on Russell Wilson. He thinks Justin Fields should be the starting quarterback. Why? Because he's younger? That just Crazy talk.

  14. Can ESPN stop talking about fields! Good god. The man can’t play, move on. I haven’t heard a single word about Mac Jones battling Lawrence for the starting job, and Mac has had a better career

  15. I don't believe that a QB should play right away all the time. Their are a ton of examples where this has worked

  16. Russ will make everyone eat their words. 100 life QB rating 9 time probowler 43k passing 5300 rushing 336 TDS 108 int 39 game winning drives. Superbowl champion.

  17. I've been saying, ever since the league went to a 17 game schedule and is thinking of a 18 game sean, you need 2 starting qbs in this League. The conversation should be, especially in the AFC North, how to aquire more qbs like Pittsburgh did, and SF also🖤💛🖤💛

  18. Russ making 39 MIL this year. He is playing for a Historical Franchise with a Great Coach and Team. Has a beautiful Wife. What the Heck are you talking about?

  19. The 2024 Steelers have TREMENDOUSLY improved from the 2023 Steelers.

The Offense is the most improved in the NFL and will be Top 10.

The QB Room has Drastically Improved with RW3 and JF2 being the best back up in the NFL. RW3 threw 26 TD's and 8 INTS and had a bad year compared to the Steelers 13 TD and 13 INTS. I can see RW3 30TD and 5 INTS and 3500YDS and 67% completion rate in Arthurs Smith's offense.

The Offense finally has a legitimate and Bonafide Offensive Coordinator with a proven offensive system and scheme. Importantly he has stated that his already successful offensive system and scheme has evolved into the point where it will incorporate and utilize the speed of the WR Room: Roman Wilson (4.39), Quez Watkins (4.35), Scotty Miller (4.39), and CAIII (4.32) all with 4.3 Speed. The Running game will start game 1 of the season rushing for 150 yards or more versus getting it going week 9 of the 2 previous seasons. In addition, the offense has proven weapons: Pickens, Muth, Najee, Warren, and Patterson. I look for Darnell Washington to have a breakout year! Najee and Jaylen will rush for 1000 Yds.

The Offensive Line Has Systematically Improved with the additions of Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier, and Mason McCormick who can play Guard and Center which adds quality depth to the OL. McCormick would be a starter on most NFL teams.

The Defense will be TOP 5

With the addition of Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson we have two athletic ILB's that can play sideline to sideline and cover TE's and RB's which the Steelers hasn't had since Ryan Shazier! Also, the addition of SS Elliott improves the Steeler 3 Safety Package Scheme that they employ 25% of the time. This will allow Minkah to be the Ball Hawk he is. Beanie Bishop at the SLCB and the resigning of Cam Sutton provide Depth at SCLB and CB2 or CB3 as Donte Jackson brings his 4.3 to the Secondary with JPJ taking the second year Leap! The CB room has quality potential that is untested depth with Darius Rush, Cory Trice, Ryan Watts all between 6"'2" and 6'3" and 200lbs + with 4.4 speed plays with physicality. This is a classic Tomlin's CB Room. KEY Point Payton Wilson hasn't had an injury since 2021!

To finalize the Roster, I would sign Calias Campbell to help the DL. I am looking for Benton to take the leap in year 2. And to add quality depth I would resign Kwon Alexander ILB, Golden OLB, and Eric Rowe S all play very well for the Steelers Last year.

The Steelers own the Ravens and have beaten them 7 of the last 8. LJ8 has his worse QB passer rating versus the Steelers at 67.4 with 6td and 7ints and 20 Sacks and 1-3 record.

Watson has never beaten the Steelers he is 0-2.

Burrel Dominates the Steelers but we did have a 4 INT Game versus him in the Season opener in 2022. But with the additions on Defense, I think the Steelers will contain him and slow him down enough to let RW3 Cook! Key Point All Three QB's have injury history: LJ8, Watson, and Burrell and the Backups are average, but the Steelers have Justin Fields as their Back Up!

The 2024 Steelers win 12 Games and win the AFC North and make it to the AFC Championship. Steelers were 5-1 in the Division in 2023.

  20. Excited to see Payton exposed to be the lackluster coach and ESPN/NFL hatred towards Russ showcased. Russell Wilson doesn’t have to win the chip… just show he’s still the one that deserves a starting role due to the consistent negative narrative (he still was in the top PASS,TD,INT last season for how he was handled)

  21. Wilson has at least 9 seasons and maybe 2 others that are better than any Fields has ever had, Russ should also benefit from Smith's offense, i favor RW to be & stay the starter and for the Steelers to be a wild card n a tough out in the playoffs

  22. Keep creating stories ESPN. It is Russell Wilson’s team folks. Justin Fields is average and will be a gimmick back up QB. The only way he plays is if Russ gets injured.

  23. Coach Mike Tomlin said "Russell is in pole position," Tomlin told ESPN. "His collective body of work merits that. But we're really excited to have Justin as well. During the course of team development, training camp and preseason he'll be given the opportunity to compete."
So until that happens? Please stop.

  24. I think they are underestimating RW on this one. I have concerns about his ability to throw over the middle but otherwise, at least from a statistical standpoint- what if our QBs- threw 26 TDS against 8 picks last year, how many games do the Steelers win last year? How much pressure would 26 TDs taken off the running game, the defense? RW does not have to turn back the clock, this is a balanced roster with legitimate star power at several positions.

  25. The steelers have had a winning record with qbs far worse than Wilson. Trubisky, Picket, Rudolph, hodges. Russ playing as he has the last two years is still better than all those guys.

  26. I referenced his salary because it was referenced like he was making $2 this season. It doesn't matter whose paying it because he is still making $39 million this season and he is still QB1 and he is not worried about Justin Fields taking his position.
