Victor hin the defending champion this week thanks to a late comeback remember a year ago he was two shots behind Denny McCarthy with three to play forced a playoff then one with a seven-footer for par on the first extra hole to win for the first time on us soil so havin with some fond memories to work off of this week they’ll be off in the morning tomorrow with our most recent major Champion Xander shafley here’s hin with Todd Lewis Victor before we start uh talking about the present and the future here in Dublin want to talk about the past your last start the PGA Championship you had a great performance how would you how would you rate your performance there and and did you gain confidence and momentum from that yeah I think that was really cool um you know struggled the last few months and um things haven’t felt very good and as soon as I kind of found the fuel that um helped me produce some better ball flights I started gaining confidence and it was nice to see that I was able to put myself in contention right away it wasn’t like some some process or project that was going to take multiple months to to figure out so uh as soon as I got on my way and uh was able to to have a chance to win a major championship so that was uh that was really cool are you expecting that kind of performance here this week uh I’d like to um I mean I’m I feel like my game has improved since then a couple weeks ago which has been been really nice um obviously this is one of the toughest golf course we play all year and you can still play good golf but if you miss it in the wrong spots you’re going to make some double bogeys and stuff so I think as long as I hit the shots that I that I want to hit I’m going to be pretty happy but I think um a lot of it boils boils down to a game plan and where you’re missing it cuz that’s uh this this golf course is so penal how would you describe the last year since you went here and your journey uh in golf yeah pretty up and down uh but uh no it’s been it’s been really cool um you know obviously winning BMW and at East Lake rder cup um it’s been so much cool stuff that’s been hap happening the last year or so um just excited to keep it going finally from those that the down part of the up and down year what do you feel like you’ve grown or gained rather uh in those moments uh it’s a good question um you know it’s just like con L just try to problem solve you know um you know it’s easy to feel sorry for yourself when you’re playing bad but you know at the end of the day you’re the one that has to figure it out and it’s not going to get any better the more you feel sorry for yourself or the Miss more pissed off you get um it’s nice to do that sometimes but you got to use that to motivation to to get yourself out of the hole your digging uh instead of using that motivation to keep digging the whole deeper so um yeah no it’s I I think it definitely you need kind of those experiences um to relish the the highs and uh kind of appreciate them a little bit more and I think it teaches you a lot about yourself well in addition to his win at Memorial havland also went on to win the FedEx Cup but in 2024 he’s been tinkering with his swing not enjoying the uh season so far that he had a year ago he’s gone back to Coach Joe Mayo in recent weeks coming off a third place finish at the PGA Championship which is his best this year hoping that finish at Valhalla gets him back on track so let me ask you this you a tinkerer no yeah I was very very surprised uh obviously I with the rest of the golf world to see Victor havin leave Joseph mayo and then now has since gone back I listened to an interview that he did with Jason soble right after the PGA he said he was very very close to not teeing it up that week his game was in such a mess he didn’t think that it could stand up to the riggers of a major championship he pushed those guys all the way down to the end and it’s nice to see Victor holand in a much better head space well incidentally that was the only time this year he’s been in the top 15
