happiest man in the history of time right now is Paul marce did he die hair or is that just Florida Sunshine no that’s Florida Sun cuz he’s looking very young these days very youthful I think like based on how this press conference goes um I think you’ll you’ll realize that Paul Maurice has never been happier in his entire life uh here’s an answer when he’s asked when he’s asked about uh the the take giveaways uh in the game last night there was only one by the Florida Panthers all game long and he has a great response that I think is something we’ve talked about previously and it’s just happy Paul Maurice so it’s fun Paul you guys according to the statute had just one giveaway tonight is that something that you awesome is that something just don’t tell me rosi had it no you want to know who was yeah who was it hecky oh he’s out is that something that you guys talked about I mean you were surprised by it so I don’t know if no you know what to be fair I I I don’t follow the qualification of what a giveaway is there were so many Puck battles on the walls that I thought we had control of the puck that we didn’t make a play and it’s into their feet and then they get possession of it I would count that as a giveaway I I I think it the change of possession um it’s either forced or it’s not in some ways what am I trying to say I think there’s a hell of a lot more giveaways in that game for two coaches and that blads out so the the one thing before we get to the the fun e BL out in pal marce is just so happy the giveaway thing I wanted to bring up because we talked about it with when Biz ran his his uh his saw on on Mitch Marner and all of the turnovers he had and then when you check the the actual stat card and it says Mitch Marner had one turnover and you’re like know we just ran a seven piece highlight reel of Mitch Marner turnovers the numbers aren’t what we think of you know we can’t trust these giveaway numbers on the box score because the people who are in front of the the benches who are on the benches who are on the ice don’t look at it the same way the stat counters do or or the coaches do or the coaches do and I like when somebody who has more pedigree within the game says the thing that kind of we’re all thinking so there’s something to back it up there and I just want to bring that up I I want to throw I I want to just add to that I think the more important stat for individual players anyway is takeaways takeaways when you actively take the puck away like you look at a guy like Mark Stone where you see it over and over and over again another guy who’s good with takeaways is William neander feels like a takeaway is easier to quantify than a giveaway yes that’s what I’m that’s what I’m trying to say yeah because because what Paul Maurice there is not he’s saying well if we gave the P or if we if it changes possession it’s giveaway I don’t think it is I think the idea of a giveaway is you coughed it up because of pressure or because of mistake or because of both well it’s an opportunity you could have had the puck and you didn’t otherwise we’re just tracking change of possession I think that’s what he’s doing yeah which is not but my my whole thing with this is is not like the individual stats of like what we think each should mean I just think like the way you look at each stat is different in your evaluation of the team and who should be out there you know it’s not just black and white hey this guy had this many giveaways this season or amongst this games and then you put that into a stat and then it pumps out some number on this guy’s defensive metrics or offensive metrics it’s not that simple I I don’t think anybody within the game thinks it’s that simple and a lot of the times we look at things and we try and make it that simple and it’s really not so complicated and Nuance I mean he literally finds the publicly available information kept by the National Hockey League laughable like he burst he burst out laughing it better not have been Bob that was a knee slapper he thought it was hilarious so that’s that’s really interesting though because he Quantified to an extent what the Florida Panthers well he but he is the head coach of the Florida Panthers what the Florida Panthers count as a giveaway I wonder if they track it internally yeah yeah like yeah they have to it probably takes forever yeah um I also wonder if there’s ever an instance where a game is so bad a coach just goes to the stats department and they go no don’t count this one that’s burning the tapes no we’re going to burn the tape of that game no it’s really burning the tapes when you tell your stats Department not to track it yeah I I I have a little thing that like tracks my golf swings and like if you if you completely like skull one or you just miss it you don’t include that in like your average distance or anything if you hit your driver 100 yards it’s supposed to go 200 you know you don’t have if I hit my driver 100 yards it’ be the best hit I’ve ever had ever it’s the best hit I’ve ever I’d be like include please include that’s my only hit so if I’m doing that for I’m the amateur of of stat keeper for my golf I think they should be doing that too at their level yes no I watched uh a game where possession changed uh hands probably 500 times and Only One giveaway from the team in red yep stop it stop it immediately do you guys have any thoughts on him just running bits and doing ah e BLS out everybody just laughing I like that he has uh personality man I I really really do and and uh I think that it wasn’t whatever happened in Winnipeg that that caused him to be I don’t think that team was a i I think there were character issues on that team and I’ve seen reporters talk about it it’s been rumored about it I think he managed a lot and dealt with a lot there and that’s not a it’s not an indictment on the city of Winnipeg I think it’s just the players that they had at the time and I think he’s enjoying it and what’s nice is that we’ve got a coach with some personality in this league so people like him Paul is becoming a star before our eyes 25 years into his career how about that I love oh even more even I’m not sure any coach has ever been more poorly timed for the Leafs he was the head coach of the Leafs yeah yeah yeah there’s a lot of people who just learned that because I said it like that’s how much of a blip on the radar his time with the leaf was he was the Marley’s guy they called him up they gave him no goalies and he’ll talk about that in interviews too he completely sewers his guys it’s hilarious because he had tuscala raycraft yeah that’s brutal it’s just terrible and then he was gone and he basically been pretty damn successful since yeah and and a lot of that time without go tending right until um heluk showed Huck yeah no goal tending no goal tending the goal tender are the two best coaches in the National Hockey League in the State of Florida uh yeah I I think that you can make a good I mean depends depends on what you think of U Bruce C I think that counts uh Bruce Cassidy in Vegas is uh to me one of the best although Rumor Has that Vegas is very analytically inclined so it takes some of that out of the coach’s hands um as in like they’ll hand you a piece of paper after a period and say these are the lines you’re going to like the Blue Jays the Blue Jays will do that too yeah the Blue Jays do do that yeah they don’t talk about it but like can they borrow some of the golden Knight success or what oh no you actually have to believe your your your your stats are wrong for that oh that’s good um uh again remember the score takes care of itself except when it doesn’t uh and oh the hu Chronicles or whatever the the uh uh who’s who else would I put how we not put Pete deor has been in uh three conference or four Conference Finals now in the last five years I would say though the one coach that’s missing is is Craig baru because he’s the Leaf’s coach he’s now among the greatest of all time no Jim Montgomery in there oh Monty man okay all right all right how many years how many years of Monty in Boston do we have to talk about before we go I’m not putting him in that category well cuz La you know he had two amazing regular seasons how many years until he gets Dwayne Casey I think is that’s what I’m trying to say cuz like there were there were conversations happening you guys remember if Boston loses game seven this year Monty’s job’s under threat oh yeah what yeah what well you blew it last year you can’t blow it again like eventually something’s got to give isn’t that nuts though I mean pretty rare you you blow a 3-1 series deficit backto back years yeah like it’s happened a little bit on the cach I want to say it’s happened less than 40 times in NHL history so for it to happen twice in two years even even even almost blowing it the second time is still almost blowing it no you know what I mean like you still have to look at that and go well that’s not great um like what people are sticking rod bremore with despite the fact that Rod’s actually won some a lot of playoff series in his time in Carolina it’s like might be at the beginning of that unless they figure out what’s what the thing is to get them to the next level this is once again I I asked the question a few weeks ago how many Elite coaches are there well you can have a lot well like I you have to have like three to five Max I think we have a category of three to five and then another category of you know maybe you know eight good ones then I think you got a whole big old pile of mid and then you got some dudes who teams are just trying can I get you guys I’m going to do it uh we’re going to clip this okay Adam and Steves that’s Adam wild and Steve dangles top five coaches in the National Hockey League oh oh all right all right all right list it all right this is you got to make it quick this year currently currently right now currently and B based off the past based on Vibes based on vbase yeah no that changes my answer okay like Pete dor like I’m not Pete Vibes all right let’s get another round for Pete like no Cooper that guy’s going to be tell knee slappers till they kick us out okay based on the best based on BS I think by the way I think Cooper can quote like Socrates too like I I think he’s that one of those guys who’s funny but also very smart I’d go out for beers with Paul marce I’d go out for wine with none of this is a top five list no this is this you guys you said Vibes and I’m talking about who I want to drink with okay so here the easy one John Cooper is the best coach in the National Hockey League I think so one two uh number two I think we should we should have gone 5 to one five to one yeah that makes that makes the well we know how we’re building it so five we need the coach pyramid when are you going to put it come up with your cards I come up with my stupid coach pyramid coach Power Rankings yeah John Cooper uh Pete dor I think is in that yep I’d put Bruce Cassidy in that um Paul Maurice I wouldn’t have a few years ago but yeah Paul Maurice I think has got to be in there now and then can I throw a name yeah that’s gonna make me unpopular you could lob except for one place uh Rick toit’s name not yet not yet it’s he hasn’t had enough had enough is he not the current coach of the year he’s the current coach of the year but he hasn’t Monty was last year two years away from getting fired like that’s usually what that means I think seeing what he did with a very very similar Vancouver team that Bruce buo had what he did at the beginning of this season and then through maintaining it throughout the team as the added pieces as well Rick toet needs to be in the top five on on the almost list I would also put Andrew brunette uh because what he did in Nashville this year yeah I think is really impressive is brendam Mo out of your top five yes because I’m putting in Jared bedar oh yeah of course bnar bedar you put dor in there too right yeah okay good okay I think is is somewhere between two tiers that I mentioned what and torz what he did with Philadelphia this year no what do you mean nah they almost made the playoffs wow they’re a garbage team oh you’re right he deserves to be in the elite class because they choked a playoff spot what are you talking about martan St Louis uh no not yet no not yet not that he they done they they they finished they finished close to last and less close the last I’m asking okay so you named a bunch of guys let’s let’s now do this Steve dangle and Adam Wild’s top five coaches list going from five to one oh I hate it rank them all right fine you said that like do a Lia Rod Bren more 5 have you seen that interview with Seth Myers no they they play this game where it’s truth or take a shot and she goes you have three kids right and then he goes yeah and she go rank them anyway Adam yes I’m glad you explained that I know Matty mat there five to one rod brandamore at number five the disrespect to Rod is unfair okay M you guys you can have your separate list number two or number four Jim Montgomery I don’t think that you put together the best regular season of all time and at least have a little recency bias and be on this list I put him in the rod tier you put him in the rod tier yeah you get your own list shut up okay fine you know what no no I’m I’m taking Monty back because it’s unfair uh because I have John Cooper later on okay list them okay so Rod we went through everybody Rod okay Paul Maurice petore uh uh who was the number two I had Jared bnar number one um uh uh John Cooper Steve I’m goingon to say Pomo number five you got to win a cup Pomo that’s what they call him Pomo Paul Maurice prison rules Paul are you in the Panthers now yeah no Benny no I would call him like freaking py or something hey Jess you remember when Dua took a shot it was crazy it’s a love it’s a heartwarming clip all right Steve make your list I put Paul Marice five Bruce Cassidy Four bedar 3 uh dbor 2 Cooper 1 okay thank it’s good you’re welcome Maddie all right you’re you’re welcome

  1. Unforced turnovers aren't giveaways statistically. Giveaways in the stats specifically are forced turnovers. Every giveaway should have a takeaway associated to it by the other team. If at the end of the game those two stats don't lineup someone didn't do the job. Now is that the most important thing to track giveaway wise? No probably not. Unforced turnovers are often worse turnovers than those produced by someone taking the puck.

  2. Florida has just looked so dominant throughout these playoffs, it's really hard not to be impressed by the job Maurice has done there. If you had told me that Florida would've been this good under him when he was hired, I would've told you you were crazy. But he's quickly become one of my favs, even as a Lightning fan.

  3. After the Cats win it all, that list order will have to change. Paul is the best. He always makes me laugh, too. My favorite line of his was when someone asked him about how good Reinhart was playing he said (Im paraphrasing), "He's a great player, but he's a free agent, so…. he's a terrible locker room guy, and he hurts small animals" 😂😂😂😂

  4. Some of our jets players were toxic. Paul Maurice had enough. I don't blame him. But we did like him in Winnipeg.

  5. The top five in my opinion are Jim Montgomery, Rick Tocchet, Kris Knoblauch, John Tortorella, and Jon Cooper. I wouldn’t qualify Maurice because he has a stacked team just about any coach would do well with them. Montgomery lost both Bergeron and Krejci and they still did very well. Tocchet took a team that probably wasn’t even supposed to make the playoffs and they won their division and almost got to the third round. Knoblauch took a team that was in last place and now they are one win away from the Stanley cup final. Tortorella took an awful team that should have been down with the Sharks, Ducks and Hawks and made them into a team that was very close to making the playoffs and were in a position to for most of the season and as for Cooper well he took the Lightning to the Stanley Cup final 3 years in a row and won 2 of them.

  6. Underrated coach is Kris Knoblauch(Bias) but he has outclassed Pete this series and has done an incredible job with the Oilers as a First time Head Coach I think.

  7. Knoblach is truly earning his name in these playoffs. Idk what other coaches would be willing to make some of these moves.

  8. The gieco moronic stat of the game…joe blow has the 4th most 0zone time for a 23 yr old during the 3rd week of May in nhl history

  9. 10. Andrew Brunette
    9. Bruce Cassidy
    8. Jim Montgomery
    7. Peter Laviolette
    6. Paul Maurice
    5. Mike Sullivan
    4. Jared Bednar
    3. Rod Brind'Amour
    2. Pete DeBoer
    1. Jon Cooper
Honorable mentions: Kris Knoblauch, Rick Tocchet, John Tortorella, Craig Berube

  10. Boston's issues aren't Monty. They are players. Or more importantly a lack of higher end forwards that can step up big. Boston's forward group is their biggest weakness at the moment. The system, willingness of the players to play the system and goal tending is what is making Boston look so good in general.

That said top 5 coaches in my mind. This is my mindset for this list always: If I want to get the most out of a roster in an attempt to make the playoffs what coach do I want.

    5. Tocchet What he did with Arizona was impressive. A basement dwelling team constantly flirting with the playoffs? Those teams were playing way above their skill level. Then he lands in Vancouver. I was not surprised at the results. Boudreau was undermined by management. If Tocchet could find a way to deal with that then he was going to do great.
    4. Mike Sullivan The Pens were actually a good team this year. The best team to not make the playoffs and it isn't close. The downfall to the team this season was a lack of player execution on the PP. If their power play is even mid pack the Pens are a borderline dark horse strong playoff team.
    3. Jim Montgomery Boston looks like a great team and they really aren't talent wise. They rely heavily on their defensive system/goal tending and a few select forwards for offensive output. Hence the recent playoff flops.
    2. Torts I said this when Torts was hired in Philly; "Torts just lost them a chance at the top pick." Talent wise the Flyers were a very bottom basement team. Ok, they "choked" out of a playoff spot but they were in a position to make the playoffs all the way down to the wire when they should never have been near the playoffs to begin with.
    1. Brind'Amour Carolina has all but 2 things. 1. A top rate goalscorer. 2. Consistent elite level goal tending.

Why no Cassidy or Cooper? Even with the injuries I think those teams should be finishing better than they are. They are great coaches but I don't have the confidence that they can "take less and do more" if you will compared to who I picked here. Personally I have Maurice and Brunette at 6 and 7 for me and 5 was pretty much a 50/50 between Tocchet and Maurice. That said those two and DeBoer do finish my top 10 coaches list. Honorary mention goes to Gerard Gallant who seems to do really well wherever he goes but can't keep a job through seemingly no fault of his own.

  11. Maurice is a solid coach for sure but this team was good before he got there. I mean if he was bad, the team would have gotten worse of course but I don't feel like he is getting dramatically more than he should from his team. Much like with Bednar – with that kind of lineup, how bad could COL possibly be?

  12. When you coach down south nobody knows who you are outside of arena. Not like in Canada where every armchair coach comes up to you with advice in restaurants, bars, grocery stores……etc.

  13. Hockey people are typically so boring. So when we get a guy who has any sense of humour it all, we have to act like he's the second coming of Andrew Dice Clay. He's kinda funny sometimes, But like Dice, the schtick is getting old fast.
