e [Music] welcome to the 2024 ipf World classic and equipped bench press championships live from Austin Texas brought to you by none other than Alo and SBD and we are in the final day of equipped competitions I’m Gary Williams and I’m I’m joined by none other than World Champion Power lifter Bryce Lewis who’s jumped into the commentary box for today to lend some of his vast knowledge of lifting also engaged heavily in equipped lifting and equipped coaching his partner is also a champion lifter as well welcome and uh it’s great to be here with you thanks so much for having me yeah my wife Natalie competed yesterday so we’re just on the other side of uh a bunch of pizza and some celebrations as as many lifters do and uh excited to watch some lifting here as we get into this uh Masters 84 plus session yeah it’s going to be a good session we’ve got a there’s a few people vying for some national records as well so we’ve got all the 84 a plus Masters lifters so we’ve got M1 M2 and M3 I don’t believe we’ve got any M4 lifters today and we are just about to get underway Linda mcfas from Canada opening 67 and a half current world records for the world for the m1’s 238 m2s 207 and M3s is 135 I think if I remember rightly the feeder here is quite a crowd in the audience cheering as the uh opening attempt here of this flight it’s been a great crowd for the whole two weeks the stadium has been pretty close to full most days for all sessions just getting one on the board to start with I think that’s the uh the hardest part in equi bench press is actually getting one on the board not to mention double being the very first lifter out there yeah being that first LIF on the platform is always the toughest Isn’t it nice work from MERS opening up strong and here she handled it really well the shirt really slid up her chest though she’s wearing a belt to hold it down but might need to that up a little bit so Michael Harris us team USA’s coach has been quite busy here I think home turf you get a few more people coming from uh yeah he’s been he’s been coaching every day plus he lifted as well so you’ll see lifters combined across uh all three Masters age divisions Masters one two and three always a good idea to go to goodlift doino you can watch the live scoreboard there it’s particularly useful when we’ve got multiple age categories on multiple weight categories Michael Harris or known in her team as Dr har Dr Mike oh that was a tough press she got good off the chest there but just didn’t chase it up made a little bit tougher for herself but she gets a lift on the board quite a slow descent on this really taking your time to bring that bar down to her chest is load our from probably wasn’t the cleanest LIF ever done got the job done yeah yeah she’s on the board for opener mommy kamatsu from Japan 85 kils we’re in the m284 plus class now Japan has such a history of Excellence on the bench press yeah they really they got a big team here this year as well and been very successful quite fast there Matsu yeah I was just watching how much her shirt slid up her chest there I mean you’ll see a lot of lifters wearing a belt uh in equi bench primarily to keep the shirt in place and here’s a good example of how much that shirt can shift what effect perspiration has in keeping that shirt in place too it’s it’s kind of cold in here so not a whole lot of C keeping that garment against her body Vicky bracket from the US 105 so we back into the M3s now I think if she can put her opening lift on the ball cleanly she’s going to be pretty hard for mcfas to catch her on this Unlimited weight class there’s quite a body weight Advantage there for uh for bracket as well okay absolutely smoke that that’s a nice that’s a nice looking warm up that one yeah yeah the challenging thing for these athletes in this class is going to be there’s only nine lifter so it’s a quick turnaround and in the weight classes you know 120 plus men the 84 plus women 120 men Etc it’s a the recovery times is a lot slower between lifts absolutely Canada is Fowler here is our first Masters one athlete starting us off the 130 on the board just want to get the opener on it’s a lot easier in classic lifting you can open light to get the uh you know a and a short lift on the board it’s much harder to do that in classic you can’t open light because you can’t get a touch on the shirt you’ve got to find the right weight that matches the shirt set up she gets that one on the board Sarah Wagers will be our next lifter from the US in the m1’s 140 kilos I did uh take a look at last year’s results from bench press uh worlds in 2023 all of these Masters athletes are new um none of them have been here uh last year and there have been so many Masters athletes competing in their first worlds this year mhm which is great to see little rocking back and forth but uh solid in three whites on her opener get on the B so important to keep that bar moving consistently upward from both sides yeah as soon as you as as let it stop or slow down suddenly you’ve lost all the momentum Joanne Le from Great Britain looking for [Applause] 150 am I right she competed earlier as well yeah I think she competed in the classic as well so we’re dealing with potentially a little bit of fatigued I’m happy the equipped came second actually yeah quite quite a number of athletes this week have competed in both now I have it on good authority that the current British record is 162 and a half and it just happens to belong to my partner in crime Joe whle who has been here every day this week commentating it is within reach for lar here oh struggling with the touch though that is a tough one she gets it there she handled that really well though wow a lot of would have struggled to regain control over that was skipping around great work from the head ref too to make sure that she gave that press command at exactly the right time yeah she recovered from that really well so Helena rberg from Finland 152.5 on the bar in the m1s that’s going to be tough for the top for the gold there I think we’re going to see some very strategic moves yeah there’s really some early separation here very quick there from easily to 165 no problem with that lift whatsoever that kind of pronated position with the um the hands there kind of rotating the wrist out a little bit Yeah if you can do it it can reduce that range of motion a little bit Sian Taylor now Great Britain 165 valuable seconds here making sure that you’re getting exactly what you want on the liftoff critical to make sure they don’t take the bar and do anything different than what you’re used to in training yeah I think it’s a really important thing to do you keep it nice and simple for them you remind them every time you go out but these guys have seen a thousand lifters this is our heaviest opener here almost ratcheting down it’s a tough point to get the touch on she should get good speed gets it to the top didn’t get as much speed as I thought she would but she does the job she is one of the few lifers I’ve seen so far wearing an Oni bench shirt yeah there’s been a few of them getting around it’s uh it’s Gathering a little bit of popularity moment he folks don’t forget about the bank obviously Dy kadama wore one the other night as well Lo and there are our current standings at the end of round one in the m1’s Taylor out in front on 165 rberg on 152 and wages on 140 in the m2s lead is out in front on 150 comeu on 85 and Harris on 67 and in the M3s bracket well out in front on 105 and de is on 67.5 and speaking of Linda mcf she is just taking the platform now for her second left 72 and A2 and i’ GL to see that the replay there she just didn’t seem to get the right SP you called it out in the opener I did see the bench shirt start to slide now you can actually see the logo start to peek out from the singlet now yeah and she’s losing a lot of tension as that happens mhm she got good speed there I think she was pushing in the wrong direction I think the slide of the shirt hasn’t helped I mean look it’s great to see everyone made their openers here so you know we should start to see these athletes push but you know everyone will be completing the meet well that’s the thing too once you’ve got that open on the board in equipped you’ve now got the opportunity you can push yourself a bit go for a few big numbers try and work up the rankings Michael Harris the US looking for 75 in the bronze medal position a few of these lifters are just a hair into the 84 plus kilo weight class as well yeah there’s such a vast array of weighin here today long range em motion for Harris here not through that stick that’s that momentum piece you were talking about there yeah it’s really important I mean one of the things I say to my athletes I’m coaching is to chase the bar yeah and you’ve got to do that and sometimes it can pop off the chest it can really catch you off guard how fast it is and if you’re moving slower than the bar it comes to a stop and it is very hard to get going again if at all okay here comes Japan Katsu 90 kilos 5 Kil jump interesting she’s throwing a belt on this time try and keep that suit in place I don’t know if it’s tight enough to really keep it there but yeah I mean it just wiggled right through as she adjusted it right and you know and if you’re if you’re not comfortable wearing a full-size belt on the bench they do make bench belts specifically for the bench it’s helped a little bit i’ tighten it up a couple of notches and that thing won’t move at all get her a lot bit of press yeah I mean that moveed like a second attempt she’s got a good amount of room left on that sets up nicely there is loaded for Vicky she had an easy 105 opener she moves up to 112 7 kilo jump Vicky bracket to the bar yeah not an enormous jump in this weight class INE equipped I mean you probably would you wouldn’t see 7 and 1/2 10 12 kilo jumps in classic but in equipped It’s Not Unusual to see larger jumps particularly in the bigger weight classes I mean the 120 plus guys you’ll see some 20 Kil 30 kilo jumps at times and we’ll be seeing those a little bit later tonight I believe sure will that it’s going to be an incredible night of lifting quick descent handles it really well another easy attemp for Vicky braet we move up to 140 kilos for heid can got to really find the balance the descend to the bar and equip lifting you don’t want to be going too slow and wasting energy but you don’t want to be going too fast where you can’t control it either and it’s so different than raw lifting too because you you do actively have to bring the bar down and and drive it directly to a specific spot keep it in line and the tighter the shirt the harder that gets to do the shirt you’re building up all that potential energy all the shirt wants to do is find the path of least resistance and you’ve got to try and find the path of most resistance hey fouler for 140 big work to get the touch oh I think that might have dipped I don’t know I feel like she didn’t come off quick enough I hope we see someone going to the jury on that with that one white light they’re allowed to go protest that call and Canada’s coach seems to be walking Wonder feel like she came yeah I don’t think they’re going to get that one just looked like her hands were moving slower than the bar really nice to have these multiple camera angles so we can get a better look at that so Sarah wages from the US looking for 150 very slow descent K she lock that right arm very hard to tell from this angle but we’ll get the front angle soon so she’s got the blue and the yellow there there’s been a lot of work on the uh the record side um the the single lift record for the m1’s is hildor ball uh set just a few months ago 238 Kil or something like that enormous yeah 15 so in lead now must be confident in the opener with the 10 kilo jump 160 and this will put a well out in front I think this puts her in a position where no one’s really going to threaten it for the gold medal most lifters here adopting that maximum grip with yeah you want to try and reduce the range of motion as much as possible and a wider grip particularly is much better in a shirt as well it helps the shirt spread across the chest lets the sleeves hook into the triceps a bit better not to mention maintaining stability on such you know large loads nice lift there that was a very easy second lift easy we move up to 1675 for Helena renberg of Finland is loaded so Helena renberg from Finland now 167 a half this will put her to the top of the table in the m1’s with Taylor still to lift you know it’s getting kind of close in the m1’s there 2 and2 kilos separating the next two attempts yeah you just want to get yourself a toe on the on the podium or get yourself up into that position you never know what will happen in equip lifting and if you can get yourself up into a position Finland here is making her move [Music] move she’s got the power she hasn’t got a lot of speed off the chest but she has the strength in that in that finish where she can really get the triceps going it’s going to depend on how this 170 moves from Great Britain but I think it’s going to be a battle here in the m1s so Shan Taylor now to take back the number one position with 170 so this is the lift we really want to watch if it’s super fast you’d have to be confident she can take anything that renberg can throw it off and renberg will be watching this too to see how fast a slow it is can I challenge her has she got more than I have just like full power competitions they get two changes to their third attempts well she’s got the speed off the chest and it’s a good lift it was a bit Scrappy but I mean you’re at a world championship you got to go for it on a third attempt yeah look you’re not going to be chased from behind so yeah you’ll see a lot of changes coming now and that brings us to the end of round two already not a lot of rest time for these athletes so current standings in the m1’s Taylor out in front on 170 with renberg chasing from behind the 167 A2 wages on 140 not really a threat but has to protect that bronze in the m2s L out in front on 165 kamatsu on 100 and Harris on 75 and in the M4 in3 sorry bracket on 1122 and mcfas on 672 and MERS on the platform again missed the 72 on a second looking for 75 Not Unusual in a quick bench of throwing a couple more kilos that shirt is just sliding all the way up yeah I mean sometimes you actually do need a little bit more weight on the bar to kind of help keep that bar in the groove on the way down uh the groove on equip benching so so important of the United States there’s an enormous amount of tension she’s losing there as that shirt slides up yeah those are potential added kilos that she’s missing out on so Michael Harris looking for 75 as well she has the bronze medal in the m2s not really really in a position to threaten for silver that was a bit of touch but it just got away you can see that’s such a such a common thing to happen on a quick bench the shirt is just trying to resist you and it just throws you back back into the rack does kind of seem like her elbows got out of position she’s kind of unable to like get them in the right Groove here interes you say that cuz as she pressed you really tucked her elbows usually you come down in that tuck position and press and they slowly come out but it was definitely the [Music] opposite okay kamasu here has something to prove taking a 10 kilo jump up to 100 kilos yeah it looks like she’s tightened the belt off a bit so that should keep the shirt into position strategy usually the case that we want similar jump sizes between first second and third attempts just can’t get that right up lagging and it’s really I mean it’s really difficult if one arm extends faster than the other cuz not only is it difficult to extend the other arm but all the weight is pushing towards the other side now of the United States yeah it’s a good point you’re making one side harder as you’re making the other easier yeah early lock out on the left side Vicky bracket from the US in the M3s looking for 1172 she is the gold medalist she dominated the M3s right from the start these competitions are so quick going right into single lift event yeah the turnaround time for these athletes is extremely rapid just couldn’t quite get to lock out but she goes home with the gold medal it seem like she was you know speaking of the bench Groove the groove is that kind of perfect line of of optimized pressing she was a little bit too close to her belly for that one kind of couldn’t get it back over her shoulders yeah it’s quite an incredible feeling when you find that Groove you when you really Hit It For the First Time suddenly everything’s feels easy and then you’re just chasing it forever after that hiy Fowler from Canada 140 on the bar still push her up into bronze for a moment because she’s lighter than wages so that put the pressure on wages to make sure she gets that second that third attempt and so she’ll definitely want to repeat that it’s a nice touch good speed good follow through that was I think that was one of her best lifts so far that was fantastic that maybe that Groove you were just talking about kind of finding that perfect line will be next at 150 K is load Sarah Sarah wages now wants to take that bronze position back again with 150 she miss this on a second just’s going to have to put it all together to get back onto the podium sometimes one of the advantages of being in a heavier weight class is that you just don’t have to press the barbell as far slightly reduced range of motion Here Comes wages USA touch point is good [Applause] I think she’s got it there she has she takes back the bronze our next is 165 K with a gold secured for lard 165 will be a Victory lap well not only that that will be a British record as well that currently belongs to none other than Joe whle he’s probably sitting behind me watching very closely so she’s actually gotten up for a better view I think she’ll probably be standing there cheering her on actually knowing Joe 165 she has the gold she dominated right from the start in the m2s [Music] oh just couldn’t quite get there I have to say Martin Marshall has done great with the equipped team he’s the only coach I’ve ever heard say stay gentle in equi lifting yeah it seems kind of intuitive right you want to kind of be as aggressive as possible but the bench especially the equip bench is such a technical movement Martin is such a great coach with equip I would never argue with him okay and so far at least we have two lifter attempting the same load on the barbell yeah this is interesting because Taylor is lighter so if rberg wants to get pter she’s going to have to lift heavier she has one change left upper sleeve so she can do that sioban Taylor now 185 she’s in the go middle position on body white I love a good fight nothing like pressure to bring the best out of athletes this is bigger than she’s ever lifted [Music] before I think she’s got that there she’s definitely locked it she has two to one fantastic and the pressure is on now for Finland and that really does put the pressure on so renberg will go 187 and a half I would imagine 18 the attempt is going in now but right now Taylor is in the gold mdle position she’s been forced into a 20 kilo jump here from her second attempt tough position to be in Fin and she doesn’t have the option to go down obviously even if she can’t feel she can’t lift that she’s stuck there lifting it I mean she’s had a great standard lifting here I think I mean if anyone can do it it’s her she’s guaranteed the silver the sniff of a gold medal though can do quite amazing things to an athlete and you can play with that shirt quite a bit to change things she’s got that belt really tight to make sure that shirt stays in position doesn’t want to lose any of that tension got the wide foot position to keep your hips down gets the touch there just couldn’t quite do it just didn’t have the position she really wanted so that means Taylor Wins the go I’m pretty sure we could just hear her out in the back yeah we just we just heard some blood curdling screams from the warmup area that was a I believe that was celebration screams what a great way to end this though battle to to the gold medal and there are our final standings in the Masters one Taylor takes the gold medal with that last left over renberg with 1672 and wages in bronze with 150 in the m2s lead right out in front right from the start takes it with 160 couldn’t get the 165 in the British record kamatsu from Japan in silver with 90 kilos and Harris from the US with 672 and in the M3s bracket dominated right from the beginning with2 1/2 and mcfas on 67 1/2 well don’t go too far away we’ll have
