freaking first cut golly welcome to the first cut podcast I’m Rick ging and this is your mega preview pod for this week’s RBC Canadian open its storylines Its Best Bets it’s one and done and it is all presented by FanDuel sports book make every moment more and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do starting with Patrick McDonald Patrick good day good day guys Canada Canada open Canadian open it seems to be a hot bed for drama over these past couple years I’m hoping maybe for a little more this week well I’m a little bit nervous because you know it’s Tuesday afternoon it’s been pretty quiet up there to the North and the last couple of years have you know there’s been a lot of breaking news uh seismic agreements etc etc Greg duch charm is here Greg I like I like a more subdued lead in to a Canadian open yes I have no problem with it but as you know north of the wall when win is coming have you are you completely caught up Greg did you watch the whole thing of Game of Thrones yes I watched the whole thing one of the few shows I’m not a big show Guy TV guy um but we watched all A Game of Thrones and I loved it so are you now watching House of the Dragon no should I oh uh season two is coming out next uh month I believe yeah so I don’t know if you should GRE I Mina’s watching it I’ve kind of just been in and out on it it seems it seems good it seems interesting right and and that’s what I was going to say patri because I think it’s like June 16th or 17 mid June they’re releasing the second season of that okay you know I might have watched some of the first season it seems pretty came out a while ago that’s that’s the yeah that’s the that’s what I heard is like it’s been forever since they did so long I forgot about it yeah um yeah I I if it’s the right which I think it is I think I watched it it just kind of felt like you want the same thing but it’s just not um now there’s been a layoff I don’t know maybe my wife really liked it to she wants to watch all of Game of Thrones again wow maybe we’ll watch second season of House of dragons yeah we’ve been talking about that since we watched the finale just red doing it it hasn’t yeah we should do we got to do we got to watch it again so it comes up every once in a while have you do you watch this P what are there eight seasons something like that aot and and honestly Greg in college I did rewatch before like the final maybe second to last season me and my roommate we zipped through the first six in like maybe a couple weeks no no classes those two weeks yeah I could tell I could tell it’s a big commitment good for you guys um I tell you what we’ve got a little bit of a news Roundup this week and that’s exactly what it is just kind of a kind of a Roundup no no real big topics that we need to get super steep on but I think worth noting the big news out of Tuesday uh comes from the lady side that’s Lexi Thompson 29 years young announcing that she’s going to retire from uh professional golf from the regular circuit at the end of the year and Greg while only 29 she has been a professional for like half of her life yeah she played in her first US Open as this week of course is the US Women’s Open she played in her first US Women’s Open at the age of 12 so it’s uh it it’s a lot of time in the spotlight it’s been a wonderful career um probably a number of wh ifs as she looks back on it which which makes it challenging right it’s a very challenging thing to play under the spotlight it’s a challenging thing to have um media attention which in the case of Lexi Thompson is probably more than more attention than her accomplishments deserve because she has been the leader of American Golf which has not been the dominant country on the um on the lady side so it’s a lot of pressure to deal with and I never give an athlete a hard time for retiring I I think um you know if you don’t like the spotlight if you’re done with it if it tires you out if it takes the love out of the game for you then you should step away and I’m not saying that’s what happened with Lexi it’s been a long and successful career um I’m just saying that I it doesn’t surprise me and I don’t think that it’s a it’s a negative thing I think it’s a career that is absolutely worth celebrating yeah I think it’s the grinds Patrick you know it’s every day since you could swing a golf club basically and been doing at the highest level um for H like I said half your life I mean it must be grueling it’s literally all she knows is professional golf she’s gonna like walk out of the end of the season it’s G to be like the trumman show it feels like she’s gonna have the whole world open up to her all the time in the world to do whatever she wants to enjoy life do all the fun stuff she hasn’t been able to do and like Greg said no matter the age I mean kudos to her on a phenomenal career this is her eight 18th US Open 18th she’s 29 that is freaking Bonkers that is absolutely insane uh and obviously six solheim Cup appearances that kind of like rejuvenated her at the end of last year it seemed like uh 15 wins a major like Greg said definitely a number of wh ifs I think of congressional recently a couple years back at that PGA to uh two-stroke lead with three to play the US Open as well at the Olympic club by five that’s the one I remember was just like slow motion car wreck yeah um but like Greg said it’s a lot of pressure to be the face of a country’s like Sport and it’s definitely been Lexi Thompson for as long as I’ve been following golf I feel like I’ve kind of followed her career a decent amount just because we’re close in age and uh you know she hasn’t always welcomed the media attention uh I think she’s been more open recently which has been good with stuff like the match with Rory and the rest of the guys there and Rose Zang too but uh kudos to her she she did kind of hint that the full-time schedule definitely content hanging that up but she’d be open to maybe an event here or there uh if the opportunity comes about she’s probably gonna start playing the best golf of her life yeah literally literally right because she’s still she’s 29 years old and all of a sudden there’s this big exhale of pressure and she is so extremely talented I wouldn’t be I wouldn’t be surprised to see her pick up an event and contend or even win I I love it for her 29 she’s got she’s got the money she’s G to be able to play like if she wants to do more Netflix stuff or the match or whatever she can do that she can play She’s she can play basically anything she’s got her whole life ahead of her I mean this is this this is great she’s made it yeah I’m happy for her congratulations Lexi uh play play well this week what else we got going on um there will be a hearing tomorrow in Kentucky for on the Scotty sheffler Case by the way that it’s uh the verbiage that I was reading well first off Scotty is not does not have to be there so they agreed on that uh let’s see the parties agree and with the permission of the court that defendant Mr Scotty sheffler uh will not be presid will be represented by Council the Jefferson County attorney uh will address the court this this has to be this has to be we’re just dropping the charges this just absolutely has to be I see no other reason why we would have something like this I I mean I’ve said this might be the third time I’ve said this now but this has to be the moment which they dro the charges minimum the felony right the alleged felon we got to throw that one out the window I feel like you look at those videos that came out last week the two new videos and I’m I know there is stuff that clearly happened before that um but that certainly did not look like there there was no semblance of of a felony charge the way that whole situation on camera went down um they are I mean he’s just driving so slow slow enough that you could catch up to him by running you know in the in the dark like it wasn’t even optimal running conditions right and apparently you’re on the ground beforehand yes you get up it’s like an up down and then chase after a car um so that doesn’t look great um it looks like Scotty certainly didn’t do anything wrong the public opinion and eyewitnesses seem to think Scotty didn’t do very much wrong so um it it makes you wonder kind of what do we what are we protecting and serving um and if if Det Gillis really was injured the way that he was said I suppose that could be a reason and I don’t want to dismiss that um but there have definitely been accounts that put that very much into question like he was stay he stayed on property for hours after and then went to the hospital that it just seems it seems strange and and if they’ve sorted all that out you could be right Rick this could be the one that where they drop it I always thought it was going to end with Scotty paying a $250 fine for some traffic violation reimbursing the 80 pants and everybody just moving on maybe maybe we’re there maybe we’re at that point I don’t know wouldn’t it be cool if like assigned flag worked that’s worth like 250 bucks right yeah yeah honestly yeah I I I do not think that any of this has to do with the fact that he’s the number one player in the world right I just think when it comes to Justice systems across the country it should be about getting it right uh no matter what the external circumstances are in this case we’re we’re only paying attention to this because it is the number one player in the world but but hopefully they just get it right it’s like instant replay in sports just get it just get the call right little v action Little V that’s um is that widely is that widely uh like like okay so in tennis Hawkeye like I feel like no one has ever said a bad word about Hawkeye like it’s perfect it’s awesome V I feel like though Patrick has a little bit like there are people who don’t like that right yeah because sometimes it’s like a finger that’s off sides like it’s like very slight it’s not really like an advantage and so it’s like what what are we really doing here but did we get the call right I will say when I went to the tennis tournament in Del re a couple of months ago the sideline judge was was also AI the voice it wasn’t the uh the ref at the middle Center Court ref it was Ai and it got it wrong a couple of times players were not happy well every time I you know what so they’re they’re they’re playing uh the French Open just started and so not only do they have Hawkeye so they have the they have the replay but also because it’s on Clay the judge is the the ref the I don’t know what he is he will jump down run over to the spot and point to the spot in the clay where it hit and then and then the players be like oh okay yeah you got it I love that near nearest point no closer to the hole yeah do they Point down with the walkie-talkie the antenna of walkie-talkie yeah yeah it’s awesome they do they do kind of have that like Spy Kids Mondo glass on one eye I don’t know why but they do is that what Hawkeye is I didn’t know the technology was called Hawkeye which makes it kind of cooler it’s awesome I’m pretty sure it’s called Hawkeye they’ve been saying that but I thought I don’t think the ref well the ref is wearing a camera now so you can see his that’s what that is yeah it does not assist and but so like when he runs out there and points down they switch to that camera and it’s like like he’s like the heavy breathing and then and then he points and you’re like okay that’s it see tennis is the best sport for I mean literally at the French Open we’re talking about lines in the sand you are it is as clear-cut as it gets it’s fantastic there’s no players there’s no other circumstances was the ball in or out I just I think that’s fantastic and I wish other sports could be like that like you talk about the uh the vs they’re like a finger off sides they’re in in football and basketball and hockey for sure and these other team sports there’s a little like there’s got to be a little bit of human element gray yeah human element gray area like does it affect the play so it’s not quite as um cut and dry as tennis it’s like when uh baseball instituted instant replay and then now like the neighborhood rule turning a double play like they actually have to touch the base now and like guys would slide into the base and they would they’d be safe there but like there’d be a millisecond in which they popped off the base and like oh now he’s out like it’s just like all this stuff that we didn’t could now that we’re at like a million frames per second it’s a completely different call now yeah they had this in golf too right like the HD Rule people are calling on calling was we we should bring that back I I have been watching the NBA Playoffs they’ve been pretty good but the last two minutes are terrible to watch it’s always a challenge on the foul it’s always replay replay replay pointing at the desk it’s like let’s just get on with it fellas have you seen the uh Elum ending I believe it’s called I have not is that a movie no so th this is a guy uh first name I can’t remember last name is El e l m and I might butcher this but it works basically as follows um when there’s two minutes to you the game is played like normal then when there is two minutes left they shut the game clock off there is only a a a shot clock and it is a race to a number of points so I think it’s like nine nine points higher than what the winning team has so if the score is 100 to 90 and there’s two minutes left they’re playing to 109 okay okay so the team that’s losing would have to make up significant ground so so they they are at a disadvantage but now there’s not this constant drain the clock foul situation all the it’s just and then and then every game ends in like a walk-off because when the bucket goes down that’s it over okay they use this in the three on three that I think is on CBS sports that that the big three The Big Three I’m pretty sure this is how they end their games it’s very interesting it seems like it would be a huge change for the NBA is that all in an effort to speed up the the game well it’s just because yeah the last two minutes which should be the most entertaining and best part of the game is the worst part of the game because of the because of the fouls intentional fouls the the slow pace of it the timeouts the replay you know all of this stuff adds up the last two minutes takes 20 minutes this is just you know don’t worry about the clock you you are incentivized to go score like go go and score we’re not trying to run out the clock here and you still have you know if you enter if you enter the last two minutes with a lead you still have that advantage who is this guy just a random guy uh I’m pretty sure he’s just like a random guy who like Dam we’re we’re gonna there’s gonna be a golf tournament coming up within the next decade it’s gonna be called the gameing method once a year they’re gonna play it I don’t know what it is yet you still have to concoct it I just simulated in a spreadsheet we hand out the money that way it happened in the 2020 Masters web Russ Russell Henley is going to win so much um this is this is my new inspiration for the elimination of time zones yes that the it could be the the duch charm uh uh standard duch charm time yes yes which is also known as the time the time the time all right well it is the time to talk about the Canadian open we are going to turn our attention over there uh get yall set up for this week at Hamilton reveal the Best Bets the one andone selections but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners the Champions League final this is as big as it gets the kings of the Champions League Dorman are into the fight want to stop me now this is the final round all his dreams coming true versus Real Madrid in the UFA Champions League final on CBS and streaming live on Paramount plus and we’re back I open will be loud they’ve built a hockey rink around the hole that’s something they’ve been doing for the last couple years they do really lean into all of this we are going back to Hamilton here Patrick Rory mroy ran away with it the last time it was in Hamilton that was 2019 he won by seven strokes it was the first part of his threeyear title defense that’s that’s where we’re headed back to five years since I believe the seventh time it is hosting overall it’s gone through a little bit of a renovation there a lot of runoffs tight runoffs which should be fun as well but short par 70 like 7,000 yards you have to imagine with these guys are probably going to tear it up but you look at this leaderboard I’m sure you guys talked about it a little last night Shane Lowry Webb Simpson her Henrik Stenson was in the mix snedker the graphes are different but this leaderboard is pretty much outside marroy the wind of Championship to me okay you’re Patrick is not entirely wrong I will also give him you know cam young is exciting Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry are at least likable I meant I meant the 2019 leaderboard those people who found success those like Henrik Stenson he’s w at such Sun JM he’s played great you got snedker he’s won twice there web Simpson he’s named two three maybe four kids after that as well so so I think there’s some skill set correlation was my point got it okay well I took it strength of field uh as well Greg which is also not entirely wrong no um but I do find this interesting to Patrick’s Point there’s and Rick we talked about this your view on this golf course is that distance will take out a lot of trouble off the te yes and and that is portrayed in Rory mroy success the data as a whole you kind of correlate it through the entirety of the field and it it’s skes more towards accuracy being more important so I’m very interested to see how that kind of plays out like I to Patrick’s Point wind them championship this sets up like a putting contest um but and and I think there are a lot of players who which makes you nervous when you’re picking right guys that aren’t necessarily great ball Strikers hit a pretty good get going on the greens and all of a sudden you have contention which seems like it’s out of nowhere so I’m curious to see if that’s the model that’s going to work or if someone can dism mantle it and separate themselves with the driver it seems like we got a couple of different options which opens up this field agreed and I think that’s that’s kind of part of the fun here is is the unknown right we’re kind of making a bunch of different educated guesses we we’ll see how it how it does play out and Patrick the the idea of uh Canadian or excuse me of of national opens I just love right the Canadian open’s been around forever we have the Mexico open which is now just a couple years into being a PGA Tour event but that event has been around forever it’s been PGA Tour Latin America corn fairy it’s been all over the place uh we’re gonna go to we’re gonna get the Scottish open we’re gonna get the US Open we’re gonna get the open the British Open the I I just love these right and I feel like this one in particular is trending right now it has quietly turned into a top five event for me regardless of signature status that’s a whole different conversation I feel like these National opens should just be Signature Events to begin with agreed and you you’ve touched on it before Rick where the naming of them too let’s just do the LA open presented by Genesis right in instead of like The Branding could just get so much better you could have everything could get better but the can Canadian open despite a tough spot on the calendar despite not having the signature status has turned into a phenomenal tournament I I touched on a little bit with all the drama you had Rory mroy going after Greg Norman after his win Justin Rose almost shot 59 that Sunday as well you had jbird in the booth that was probably a low point for the PJ tour to tell you the truth last year you had the deal Rory sacrificial lamb Tommy Fleetwood Nick Taylor 72 feat for Eagle glorious and free he’s the new silhouette in the logo now just unbelievable tournament and it’s because the Canadians care they really get behind this tournament and you can tell the community is all the way behind it and it’s it’s awesome viewing and I know it’s awesome on the grounds there too and I know the players love it as well I will say this a lot of guys who not a lot but number who are probably skipping next week Tom Kim this is his fourth Sam Burns this is his F fourth in a row can’t imagine they go six straight with the US Open that’s interesting yeah this is a very um populated spot on the schedule and and Greg as Patrick was rattling off all of those uh momentum items for the Canadian open I we’re gonna cap this off with the President’s Cup at Royal later this year I mean the Canadians who love their sport love love golf are going to get uh two massive events this year yeah and the President’s Cup really um I I think it even stirs up the interest in the Canadian open even a little more because you have so many Canadians that these fans are going to want to see on the team and while they’re always cheering for them this is this is Monumental right I mean they would love to have a Canadian team with six Canadian golfers and they’d probably like to have 12 but I think they also want to have a chance to beat the Americans so let’s just say six to give them a good number and they’re going to be cheering on the Taylor pendis and the Adam senson right and all those kind of Bubble Boy Canadian golfers who can make a big impact on Mike Weir this week um so the fact that it’s connected to something else even though it may be a little indirect is a big deal and will be for the Canadian fans this week as of right now uh Nick Taylor is fifth in the President’s Cup standings Corey Connors is ninth and then we’ve got Adam hadwin lurking at 11th Taylor pendrith is 14th McKenzie Hughes is 18th Adam senson is 20th so what’s that Five Guys inside the top 20 Mike Weir will get his eyes on uh to potential I use that word very Loosely international team members for the first two days because he is playing with Roger Sloan Canadian and Sh Kim South Korean I think it’s probably I I said I said potential I was not expecting those two names I wasn’t either I’m glad you didn’t make me guess how much how much as sh campaign you here Rick what’s going on just they are technically eligible right they are not um they’re not Irish they are not American they are technically elig eligible to be on uh Mike we’s team could impress he is really impressive to watch but I think he’s got some work to do and you’re right Rick potential is loose yes yeah listen I’m not I’m not out here lying I’m just you know I will say this who whoever the next Canadian is to win if it isn’t Cory k they’ll not only punch their ticket to the President’s Cup team they might steal Cory Conor’s spot on the Olympics team too that qualification ends after it’s in like a month and right now it’s Nick Taylor and Cory Connor but the same group hadwin pendrith and Hughes are like right behind him I am so out on Cory Connors and he seems like a great guy love him yada y I just like I thought you were gonna say Olympics it just does nothing for me he um is he is really unbelievable it is an unbelievable stat profile especially when you look at it on rickr good.com and you see the ball striking side which is it looks like Scotty sheffer’s and you see the other side and it looks like mine I was going to say mine but even better yeah yours it’s unbelievable how how consistent he is with his ball striking and how underwhelming his short game and putting is well he can shove it right in my face this week and and go win which he which he probably will um but I doubt okay we are gonna try to pick the winners here plus throw in some matchups throw in some some finishing positions I will I’m already annoyed because as soon as I pulled up the outline Greg had all my favorite bets in there already and your matchup of choice boom there it is the 2024 RBC Canadian open betting board I have gone with two guys who have been kind of disappointing I think in 2024 Tom Kim minus 105 over Sam Burns Burns was really good at the beginning of the year but ever since uh we’ve gone away from the West Coast which kind of doesn’t make sense for Sam Burns he has not been playing well and so I’m gonna go with Tom Kim over him the Sedgefield connection he’s got a bit more consistency right now so I’mma roll with him minus 105 my main man the global Superstar Paul Tor on the bag so we have that connection too over Sam Burns who uh has missed three Cuts in his last five yeah those are two guys that are having weird weird years for sure Tom Kim over sand bur so so what I was alluding to with that whole speech earlier is that Greg has has exposure to a lot of Taylor pendri I wanted exposure to a lot of Taylor pendrith so I went with Taylor pendrith over Aaron Ry at plus 105 we’re going to talk about him a lot I just think this is a good course fit for him I think he’s being undervalued we will spend a lot more time talking about him Greg your matchup please uh going with a little Canadian theme I’m going with McKenzie Hughes over my boy Adam hadwin um which pains me in a couple ways one I hardly ever put minus money in here he’s at minus 115 but I think McKenzie Hughes is due to have a really good week especially if a putting contest breaks out he’s been putting the ball beautifully um and and I think his form’s just a little bit better than Adam hadwin’s so I’m taking Hughes over hadwin minus 115 speaking of Adam hadwin I will take the over on whatever the line is of how many times they show him getting tackled from last year what about his wife in Nick Taylor’s wife skydiving in tomorrow into the tournament Is that real you guys see that oh yeah I did not see that oh yeah so Jess hadwin uh she’s awesome on Twitter she’s going to she’s going to sky dive in with Nick Taylor’s wait not Sky Skydive I believe so I believe they’re gonna be strapped to couple guys and they’re going to skydive in did I misread that that’s a big misread if you did no no I think you’re actually right so hold on I’m definitely right yeah so so the RBC Canadian open tweeted this out um today this morning tomorrow and Andy Taylor which is Nick Taylor’s wife will be starting the tournament in high octane fashion thanks to the Skyhawks of Canada which um their Twitter bio is in French I’m going to assume it’s some skydiving uh company or group see it live Wednesday you can at 2 pm yeah it looks like they are gonna Skydive into this golf course how baller is that we should start every tournament with players doing that I know Liv does that sometimes Greg Norman will get up there I think the defending champion at every tournament has to skydive in I wouldn’t want to win but but but but like at their T like they have to skydive to the first te take it off their Caddy will
