all right guys in today’s video we’re talking about how you can get and stay behind the ball and why that’s so darn important with your driver JT and Eric here with performance golf I’ve been waiting for a while to do this with JT specifically because I’ve seen JT coach this into players and they’ve gained a lot of distance off the te I I would say it’s maybe the most important thing if not one gosh it’s it’s right up there if you look at really good drivers of the ball hit the ball high far and straight we’re going to show you a bunch in this video I want you to note where their head is and their upper body relative to the golf ball and what they’re going to note JT is that their head consistently stays back and their upper body stays back but I think the trick of this video and kind of what we want to walk into is there’s a little bit of a different way to think about it or a secret if you will as to how to stay um behind the ball can you kind of talk us through how that works yes big secret guys to keep your head behind the ball is not really necessarily thinking about your head at all it’s actually thinking about where your hips are so your hips uh really influence where your head is uh in space and so what I mean by that and we see this all the time right Eric where we see players who struggle with their driver and they go back and they move their hips really far off the ball and what happens to my head ah now my head’s actually in front of the ball so there’s really hard for me on the down swing to now try and get my head behind the ball and real quick before we go into that a little more too like when your head goes forward on the way down and why this is important at all like if show us a motion JT where the head goes too far forward on the way down on the way down just real slow and so like what would happen with the club with that like what what’s the bad result of that yeah so most of the time when the the head moves this far we’re hitting way too far down way down way down um you know and when we’re hitting so far down on a driver we lose distance we don’t hit it very far um you know the ball’s on a te it’s really the only club that we really hit up on yeah um and so when we have this you know issue of getting the head too far in front of the ball too soon and then moving it even more I mean we’re really doing ourselves a disservice hitting way too far down way too far down probably too far across out the end and like you know from a swing perspective swing speed perspective take a given swing speed let’s say you swing at 90 miles an hour that 90 mph golfer who hits down a lot yeah versus that same speed who learns how to hit up could be 10 20 30 yards different yes so we’re talking about a massive difference off the T without having to s any faster Harder by having where this you the head staying more back behind the ball just wanted to clarify that before we go but really key point you mentioned there if you show the bad motion again on the way back JT hips away from the target so you’re saying hey the upper body really responds to where the hips are gone yes and so the more the you know the more you move your lower body the wrong way or or any direction your upper body’s going to respond because obviously our pelvis and our spine are connected yes so um you know I see a lot of students trying to get their head behind the ball and they’ll even sway their lower body even further and they’re like I’m trying to get it but I can’t why can’t I get my head behind the ball right and so it always comes from really the secret to keeping your head behind the ball is where your hips are in your back swing and in your downswing so um I would say really the most important part for how we look on the back swing to get the head behind the ball is we actually want to feel like the hips especially kind of the tailbone rotates towards the target so if I were to make a back swing here and I turn my tailbone towards the target you already see there I had a slight movement of my head to the right or off the ball so just how if my hips go away from the target my head will go in front if my hips go slightly towards the target at least that’ll be the feeling now my head is behind the ball so you’re always like trying to keep your hips ahead of your Chester head exactly so kind of like that understanding would be I’m always trying to keep my buttons behind my belt buckle buttons behind my belt buckle and that’s like set up back swing down swing yes follow through follow through that’s whole swing the whole swing so again when we see issues is when we see the belt buckle they get this way the button too far in front getting way ahead of the ball way too far down no good let me ask you this JT let’s say you go up to a good top of back swing y so let’s even just say like hey I got the back swing part correct so from there you could still mess things up and get the Shir buttons ahead of the hips for sure and so like the correct way you’re saying is hey we’ve already have the shirt buttons or chest away from the target more than the hips we have to maintain that relationship on the way down is that the way you’d say that yes for sure and so all we’re trying to do is really we can kind of push them both back right towards the target so just how when we go up to the top what we want is a lot of people when they try to keep the their head behind again they also keep their hips too far behind right so we see this all the time Eric how do I keep my head back without my weight staying back exactly and so you’re saying the how do you solve that is getting the hips more forward yeah you get you can move really you can move everything more forward but the understanding that I want you to have is the core goal is you got to keep your buttons behind your belt buckle so we don’t mind if your upper body moves forward some but if your hips keep moving forward and we keep having this discrepancy or this uh lineup where my butt Buckle is more forward we’re always going to be behind the ball always and that’s going to enable us with the head more back to hit more level up to hit a little farther and obviously if you as as you do that with the upper body behind the lower of course we’re showing to exaggerate JT would be turning and rotating along with that right course yeah there’s more parts to it but just to show the correlation if we took a 100 golfers and we took the golfers who had the head the most behind or back in motion with the hips forward they would hit it the farthest for sure and every golfer that had the head working too far forward would hit it the shortest that’s been true for the past 15 years of all golfers that I’ve seen and it’ll it’ll forever be true so let let’s say they have that concept JT do you like them starting with and also right at the setup for sure so we’re actually you’re setting the sh buttons behind the belt buckle the head’s behind the ball line to set up part one yes and we see that a lot well so we see the chest forward high right shoulder high right arm and then the good version is a little bit of tilt there and then if someone’s trying to feel this are you kind of just sayy keep it kind of simple in general keep the chest and Shir buns a little to the right yeah so I would say if we’re trying to feel this in general that would be hey that’s the concept right the the visual that we have in our head in order to do this properly there’s a couple of different ways that you could think about it but the first one would be when you swing back trying to get your right hip pocket to go more around towards the Target or more you know that would be step goal one see this is interesting because I just went right back to the upper body and the whole point of the video you’re saying is the lower body controls that so it’s actually more on the way back feeling that yes it’s almost impossible if you if you put your pelvis in a certain way it’s really hard for you to make your spine do the other direction now if you put your pelvis the wrong way it’s really easy to go that direction so we’re almost trying to fullprof it to where if you do this you can’t you almost can’t not keep your head behind the ball perfect yeah so big key again for keeping your head behind the ball secret your hips so right hip goes more around if you notice that again I’m just going to do this really small I’m not trying to move my head to the right I’m not trying to do anything I’m focusing solely on my hips my head if you notice Eric went slightly to the right again just because I move my hips this way my upper body responded now more behind the ball and we and we’ll show you guys with a different angled end you’re saying actually your tailbone or the base of like your spines the back of your hips are moving towards the target yes almost like towards the left angle a little bit yes exactly and again as we do that especially with driver that’s going to be super helpful for us now you see my head is behind the ball now the goal would be guys again we’ set up this nice discrepancy here the feeling would be if anything all I’m going to TR and do is because I’ve set up this motion well in the back swing if I push my hips more forward to start the downswing my head is going to stay behind the ball so the key guys for keeping your head behind the ball is how your pelvis Works trying to get that upper body trying to get the buttons behind your belt buckle in the back swing and then if we push our hips forward you’re going to notice pushing my hips forward makes it really easy for my head to stay more back and that’s what helps get some weight on that front foot pushing the hips more forward from where they were at the top of the SW I don’t know that we need to say much more than that I think that was so well delivered I think that point of the hips controlling where the upper body is is so beautiful and so they’re feeling the base of the spine set up correct yeah feel the base of the spine the right hip on the way back continue feeling that on the way down and the head staying back should should more or less um take care of that what one quick thing I would say JT if you take a setup there too obviously like I mentioned if we draw the line up the golf ball and show a good model you’ll see they start behind it they probably move a little more and then they stay behind it you know another drill we might do sometimes if you had like a wall or an object sort of over the left shoulder you might feel like you get a little farther on the way back and or down you’ll actually see a lot of good drivers the head will move slightly away yeah as their hips and pressure are still forward it’s a big big move to gain more distance off the te but I love that it’s you saying the hips control it I went right to the upper body like no no it’s the it’s the pelvis and hip motion yes yeah I think that I think that’s so good and I also don’t think it needs to be anything fancier from there I think that’s like conceptually um hits that home if you need to line up an object over the lead side but gosh darn it you have to learn how to get behind the ball and stay behind starts with the setup keep it on the way back keep it on that was really really good if you guys do this along with that slingshot video If you guys didn’t see from JT I think you guys are going to gain a lot of distance off the te as always any questions leave a comment down below appreciate you watching

Soooo you're saying I could hit my driver 58 yards!?!?!
A lot of hot air for nothing. Spent way too much time teaching what not to do.
I can now be hitting 400+ yards?
Great lesson gentlemen!
JT and Eric man these two are a great pair. Easy to understand discussion and chemistry. We need 18 holes round with commentary!!
whr is the slingshot video..?
Thank you! That 'keeping the shirt button behind the hips' thought has really helped the consistency of my driver. By itself, it doesn't seem give me any more distance, but it allows me to use more width on the backswing with confidence and get more distance with that without huge slices and pushes. It's also solved an issue I had with rotating my shoulders too early.
This video is great. But i don't think i want to add 50+ yards to my slice. I'm already in the next fairway as it is.
Great swing tip, technique, and conceptually instructive!
Great video , well explained and something to work on the next few range days.
Keep up the great work lads.
