This is for all you golfers who pull down on the club in transition. This usually causes the golfer to get narrow and steep, and eventually have to compensate in some fashion by stalling the pivot and tilting out of the shot.
It includes the visual explanation of what it is, what happens mechanically when you do it, as well as a DRILL to correct it 👊

okay golfers if you are somebody who struggles with a pull down okay so this is relating to the student that I shared the other day there is two things I want to talk about here okay so first of all what is a pull down a pull down is when you have a lot of hand speed in transition really downwards right your body can keep Pace often times you’ll see the lead rist get very cued you’ll see the shaft get very narrow and then you have to try to find a way to unwind it later oftentimes the golfer can get stuck from there it’s really hard to play good golf so what we want to do is we want to try to soften that to allow the hand path to work a little bit back in front of you better keep the shaft a little bit more shallow so that you can continue to rotate through the ball so there’s two things I wanted to talk about number one is just the grip strength often times when you see golfers pull down on the club they get the club way too much in the fingers of their lead hand they get the grip so strong that now when they get to the top of the back swing the lead wrist is going to stay very extended when the lead wrist stays very extended often times from here it’s really easier for me to apply that downward Force to the handle of the Club so what I would do in that scenario is just get the grip a little bit weaker so get the club a little bit more in the palm of your hand obviously this allows the lead wrist to stay a little flatter a little wider and then from here it’s a lot harder to actively apply that downward Force to the handle and that just softens the pull down and allows the hand path to work very differently in transition that’s the first one the second one is just would be very simply a drill that actively improves the way the body is moving and slows down the speed of the hand which basically means instead of having so much hand speed downwards where you get narrow we want to try to find a way to slow down the speed of the hands and improve the speed of the body when your body rotates your hand path usually will want to work back in front of you so we can take this club and instead of applying a downward force with the pull down this way we can apply an outward Force to the handle through the rotation and doing that actually helps you to shallow the club but it also helps the body to rotate a lot better as we’re doing it so fun little drill that I’ll usually give players you’re going to take an alignment stick you’re going to put it under your Trail armpit try to have it sticking out parallel to the ground in front of you when you’re doing it you’ll notice I have a little bit more of the stick in front of me as opposed to behind me and then you’re going to take your setup and what you’re going to do is you’re going to do a lot of half and three quter swings at first as you’re going up you’re going to notice this alignment stick is going to rest on top of your lead arm all you want to do here is try to retain the connection between the arm in the stick and try to keep the stick elevated as your body rotates and when you do this you’ll notice the hand path will work back out in front of you you’ll notice the shaft will obviously have a very different Force being applied to it to help it get shallow and then from here obviously your body is going to start to continue rotate well not start but continue rotating from there and you’ll notice the stick is going to want to work a lot more level through the ball so a very different move than if you’re somebody who pulls down on the club if I do this drill and then I get to the top and I’m connected to the stick here but then I pull down really fast you’ll notice number one the stick is going to tilt down towards the ground really early you’ll notice my arm and the stick have lost connection because the hand speed separates from the alignment stick and obviously from there the stick is not going to point towards the target nearly well or fast enough right so you have direct feedback now on what’s happening if you pull down on the club in terms of the arms connection to this alignment stick so when you’re setting up to the stick here we’re going to go to the top of the back swing retain the connection a lot of slow drills and exercises stick stays elevated right stick keeps opening up the arm stays connected to the stick and we’re doing a lot of rehearsals almost feeling a lot of this obviously that’s a very exaggerated movement but some amount of exaggeration is necessary if you want to soften that pull down that you’re doing if I go to the top and it’s connected and then I pull down on the club I get very steep very narrow stick is nowhere near connected to me and it’s pointing to the floor right so you’re just going to do a lot of exercises of connection and then rotate through the ball trying to retain that connection as much as possible from face on it would look something like this here you’ll see the stick is poting in front of me it might Point slightly towards the lead that’s fine and then from here is retain connection and then I’m not pulling down and disconnecting it I’m trying to hold that connection and then rotate my body very very different pattern this is the best drill for you to start doing it okay
