[Music] we started with 64 teams we’re down to two the 2024 NCAA Softball Championship from boomba soldiers Creek Park Longwood Florida it’s UT Tyler taking on Western Washington game number one it’ll be a best of three series Western Washington out of the west west region and GAC conference traveled probably the furthest and took the longer path to get to this championship game having already played five games this week UT Tyler South Central Region lstar conference the highway rof they have played just three games Leo Sako and the Three Time All-American and national champion in barbar Jordan with you and Barb we look at these two teams their P to get here the experience of UT Tyler being here and the hungriness and the will to win for Western Washington what can we expect in game number one it proves to be a very interesting matchup and yes we know that the Patriots have been here before the Vikings this is their first ever championship and so when you take a look at these two teams they met earlier and the Patriots Domin minated the Vikings but there has been some major adjustments by the Vikings with their will to win and we are going to step aside now for our national anthem [Music] [Applause] we are set to go in game number one in this first game of the series the Patriots of UT Tyler wearing ing their dark jerseys they are the home team from game number one as selected as the upper seed coming into this week uh the eight teams that participated and we congratulate the six that have left us at this point uh for making it down this road here’s the lineup for Western Washington and they have gotten a great chunk of effort from their entire order Barb but you have to look at that four spot and Emma Andre jesi Ramirez yeah it’s been a very potent lineup one through nine uh Emma Andrew Jesy has done a fantastic job providing a big punch batting 389 so far in this tournament but I but I love Malia Andrews at the top she has absolutely been the spark yeah you when we were speaking with Coach Gilmore yesterday uh your face kind of lit up a little bit you could tell with the way that Andrews plays the game and she is certainly the table setter for this Viking [Applause] team getting the nod in the circle once again that’s Christian ha good and Kristen has been solid throughout this tournament uh she has held opposing bats to a 151 average this week and she has been steady yeah and the way that she does it is that she throws to all zones and she uses a variety of speeds and we are underway with Andrews in the Box she’ll be starting at Third Base today the steady Main St for the [Applause] Vikings outside corner called a ball head coach Mike Reed said hey you know you might see flashier pitchers warming up in bullpens but he gives a lot of credit to his pitching staff because they stick to the plan this time goes on the inside corner to tuber Andrew’s taking pitches we don’t see that often with her a very aggressive leadoff batter hey good looks down is ready to work two2 slaps this one price up with the play to first for the first [Applause] out the infield for UT Tyler that’s Clarissa Zapata number 22 over at first base Nicole Price steady with that glove at second Courtney pek at third uh short Michelle Aras at third left to right in the Outfield shot Smith and Mullen and that’s Audrey esina behind home plate esam catching today once again for Kristen [Applause] Hager that brings up Connie ptoy ptoy slaps this one up over the head of price for the base hit [Applause] I like when people swing early in the count especially in a championship game you want to win you got to go after it you got to be aggressive in everything that you [Music] do the steady bat of Haley wrath now with ptoy at first base Haley had a big three-run home in the victory over U Indi 7 to1 to propel the Vikings to this championship game wrath got him going in the first inning with this launch into left center field off the top of the tent that put them on the board early three to nothing and they never looked back Gators out behind that fence were hungry for something and I’m sure they enjoyed getting that softball here’s wrath now with a 2-1 count facing hey good here in the [Music] first [Applause] [Music] 3-1 P good has gotten at least one hit in four of the five games heer is second they don’t get the out you see the arm out there at second base and a great job in base running is ptoy on the Aaron throw moves all the way to third I like this just a hard ground ball hega just trying to get the lead Runner pek unable to make it really a routine throw maybe a little bit low P toy all the way to third wrath to [Applause] Second and the biggest bat in the lineup here is Mike Reed heads out to the circle to discuss it kind of settle down his teammates or as uh Emma Andrew jesi Ramirez who is coming off of a big three for four three RBI huge double in the the 7 to1 win against U Indi Western Washington had to play u Indi twice forced that Elimination [Applause] Game beat them two to one in 12 and then s to one so Runners on second and third here with one out and Emma has shown us power Barb to that right side of the field as well she covers the play nicely yeah we’ve seen her go extra bases to that right center Gap we’ve also seen her go deep though to the left Center Gap big cut there one and [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one again this is a best two out of three they’ll play one today at noon and then tomorrow noon time and then if necessary roughly 2:30 30 minutes after the completion of that second game Emma goes after it good job protecting ha good trying to extend the Zone on the outside part of the plate Andrew jesi Ramirez listed a 6 feet tall so she’s got good extension and good reach got her big strike though this is a real big pitch by ha good early in the game going up this going up against this power hitter with this called strike three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] outside corner for a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ball we saw Western Washington regroup after their first game of the tournament where they lost 10 to1 to UT tile they have really I don’t want to say they have cruised through the losers bracket but they have gained momentum with every victory [Music] since it’s probably the one good thing that comes out of this two good things that come out of this you everybody starts fresh today at o and O again with this two of three series and for these two teams they got a little Scout on each other like a true Scout on each other having played earlier well we had a chance to talk to head coach chyl Gilmore for Western Washington and she said you know they came out they were fast they ran the bases they were aggressive and I I think it stunned the Vikings so we will see and watch for their adjustments on the defensive side of the field Vikings only managed three hits in that game Full Count now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Vikings staff only giving up three runs total in the last three [Applause] games and one of those games going 12 innings Kimble has struck out 12 on the week and ready to work here 2-2 on that outside Region won a national championship West Texas A&M won their second in 2021 thr three games with a Cinderella Biola team and shot hit by the pitch she’ll head down the first [Music] space needing to walk that one off the last time a team from the West you have to go back to 2011 UC San Diego taking care of Alabama Huntsville led by head coach Patty gerkins interesting to see how many teams that have won a division 2 Championship have since moved on to division one and and there’s a handful of them and that was uh UC San Diego’s second as well my colleague Barb Jordan three-time All-American and also a member of three national championships during her time at Cal State [Music] [Applause] [Music] Northridge no price who has been steady steady steady with that glove over at second base when you look at experience Nicole Price is somebody that the Patriots look to having won that national championship you know there’s so much to be said for having won before because you understand what it takes and as a leader you can share that experience specifically with the younger players who have never competed in a game or a series with so much on the line well that brings up a player who knows a lot about a lot on the line one of the biggest bats certainly for the season and this week the graduates student from Deer Park Texas Courtney [Applause] po big cut at [Applause] it Longwood Florida home of the division 2 Softball Championship Western Washington out of Billingham and a gorgeous area if you ever have the opportunity to stop by their 215 acre campus great setting for Coach Gilmore and all of the students and athletes they are in search of their very first national [Applause] championship and they came over 3200 miles to this location their first ever division 2 championship and they said in this time they’ve had a lot of support from their new athletic director Jim sturk coach Gilmore said they didn’t even have batting cages the beginning of this season and within the year Well magically those batting cages have been installed right before the Regional Championship coach Z it made a huge difference with her Squad golden fishing on the outside corner second strike out of the game here by he good as Emily pson goes down see he good coming here and just getting her to chase right off the plate and that’s the pattern we’ve seen with haod early in the game trying to get these right-handed batters to lean and look outside and then try to finish him with an inside pitch that’s the junior number two Lexi barkham the left fielder out of Pasco [Music] [Applause] Washington Lexi picked up her first two hits of championship week in a solid effort in that seven hole going two for two against UN in game number five [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 11 one now a pie for a [Applause] [Music] ball we talked about how far the Vikings have traveled they are actually the first team from the gck to appear in the division 2 championships CER inside out of play coming off a amazing come from behind at the Super Regionals and the winner take all game they were down by six runs after four Innings that was against Cal State Dominguez Hills team that we saw in the finals in 2022 against Rogers [Applause] coach Gilmore said they came back they won that game 7 to six she had to look over in the middle of the night at the trophy and say did we just really do that Malia Andrews with that big Gua Homer Never Say Never back they were uh down six nothing Full Count now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bark back hey good over to first for the second [Applause] out well it’s a nice job thus far from the Vikings they had some Runners on two Runners on in the first inning but they’re doing a nice job making hay good throw a games played the biggest one probably the single that broke open the tie and helped give Western Washington the 2-1 win in game four and forced that if game with you Indie 2 two chases it upstairs [Applause] their run through the losers bracket has been you know something pretty special we talked about how they’ve outscored opponents 16-3 in those three games collecting 31 hits in those games up high she goes after it chases it Aras with the play in foul territory three up three down in the second for the Vikings here in game one of the division two Softball [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Championship welcome back as we head now to the bottom of the second inning it’ll be 678 Michela Garcia who has been the steady steady freshman bat out of leic Texas for the Patriots this year stepping [Music] in Garcia with four hits this [Applause] [Music] week was one for two with an RBI and two runs scored in the 10 one win against Western Washington and she slaps that one through this Ball Trails up in the zone just a little bit and it gives Garcia a nice chance to get her Barrel out in front and drive it through [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the catcher Adreas Kama stepping in she squares the butt gets it down only play to First that moves Garcia up to second [Applause] base and this is a good fundamental bunt by ESO this pitch was sailing lowrise ball in the zone she does a nice job of keeping her Barrel at the top of the strike zone and just dumping it down to move the runner Cassidy all in the right fielder with two hits on the week she was one for four in this ball is fou for Western Washington making their way through the losers bracket having played five games in this tournament two just the other day against you Indy m one of those games going 12 Innings and yesterday at the end of that day when they won their second game they said hey coach your practice time to tomorrow is and she just looked at them and said uh I think we’re going to take the day off it’s well deserved they had been in this FL to heat you could see the redness on all of her players arms and Coach Gilmore said it was the stickiest hottest grueling grittiest most fun day I have ever been a part of on the softball field true true when you’re winning down low for a ball but those are the memories those are the things like when you come back you don’t just say remember that it’s like it’s all those little things during the day that are are the laughter I promise you some of them rolled over in the middle of the night their arms were so sunburned they felt it yeah absolutely outside corner ball four so Mullen is on first walk of the [Applause] [Music] game team had an opportunity yesterday instead of practicing ing they decided to put their toes in the Atlantic Ocean they went over towards the Coco Beach area not too far going to try to see if anything was transpiring over at Cape Canaveral which isn’t too far from long wood at all I promise when their toes hit the water they could not believe how warm it was compared to the Pacific Ocean on the west coast you’re talking about a to 20° difference in temperature Clarissa Zapata has been spectacular this week the first baseman with a hit in each of the three games went two for three with an RBI against Western Washington yeah zata batting 500 in this [Applause] [Music] Tournament being careful here success with their program and their first three years making it to be one of the eight final teams here the Patriots coming to Plate it’ll be 345 Courtney pek will lead it off here Courtney flew out to left field her first time up UT Tyler of course part of that University of Texas system public research University established back in [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 1971 one one count [Music] [Applause] shows Buck pulls it back we had a chance to talk to head coach Mike Reed for UT Tyler and we said you know what is your message to the team and his response was think about all the players you’ve ever played with dating back to when you were like 18 you 10 you where are those players now how many of them have ever made it to a national championship and I think there’s a lot of Truth in that that’s like a proud moment as you reflect on an athlete because the percentages of playing in a national championship at the Collegiate level are about 1% [Applause] right my colleagues had that opportunity multiple times as this one is popped up and out of [Applause] play and B you know having that having that chance and being in a very select group of division 2 athletes you what was your biggest take you know now reflecting back on the not in the moment but now reflecting back on it well I think you always have to give credit you know to your leader to the head coach our head coach back then was Gary torguson who ended up becoming inducted into the nfca Hall of Fame you have to have a leader that sets the tone that reminds you of the standards and drives you every day and sets goals that are realistic and somebody that pushes you you know whoever that might be and we we definitely had that as a program you saw Northridge compete in four consecutive national championships between 82 and 87 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh all in one count here on JT [Applause] Smith P check over at first base and that went out of play I did my math wrong on that 82 to 87 is 5 years let me let me do my the math in my head a little differently yeah but you know what your your team like you said your your team was there those five years winning four five stepen F Austin kind of ruining the party in between with that one to nothing Victory I remember it well slapped out to left field and barkham grabs it in gets that ball in [Applause] quickly you know and I think that’s probably you say you remember well as we take a look at it on the replay look at this nice shot by Smith unfortunately for her right at barcom and left po goes back to first [Applause] base you say you remember it well and just probably the same way that UT Tyler remembers it well tasting it so close last season losing to the eventual national champion in uh North Georgia yeah there’s a lot of lesson to be learned whether you win or lose at this level and when you lose and you come up just short you have to learn from those lessons North Georgia would then go on to play uh Grand Valley State swept them in two for the national or three actually in the national championship last year best two out of three is well 7 to3 and three to nothing [Applause] this one off again and out of play they’re going through softballs here today like like like something nobody’s business yeah they’ll roughly go through 16 to 24 dozen softballs during championship week without a [Applause] problem and some of them in the park setting certainly at soldiers Creek Park you just it’s like a golf ball on a golf course you just want to let lie as uh there’s some water around there and it is Gator mating season and they’re rearing their heads right now so just let the gator have it and move on yeah you got to be careful which home run balls you choose to Chase [Music] [Applause] [Applause] security outside corner for a ball cyber security I think she’ll have a job for a long time coming fifth batter this inning to face Kimble in this best two out of three series for a
