description bet smart bet responsibly with odds Jam Welcome Back everybody Welcome Back how’s it going Max how you been doing I’m good how are you how are things well I’m a little bummed because I turned 41 on this Saturday and I’m finally kind of having the reality set in that I’m never going to play for the Yankees you know unless there’s some kind of catastrophic event like in that movie Interstellar where you all the random dudes like out in a cornfield playing as the Yankees while nobody has food like if that happens I and I survive we’re good but otherwise I’m pretty much uh I’m pretty much screwed never gonna play for the Yanks well hey we’ve got the uh the media game at Fenway Park coming up next month so us on the beat are we’re definitely looking forward to that and then Yankee Stadium is is later in the year in September but um those those are good benchmarks throughout the year where we can actually get out there and you know Flex our muscles a little bit try not to pull a hamstring or anything like that I saw you take one to the warning track last year that’s pretty impressive was it metal or wood wood bat nice yeah nice was it a hanger from hul what was it no so we play against the Red Sox media so I I don’t know who it was I think they may have actually brought their side brought a couple like men’s league guys or or friends of reporters because I think Boston had a getaway day in Cleveland the day before this was last fall and yeah it was a a lefty I’ll I’ll give you a Jamie Moyer comp wasn’t thrown very hard um and I was licking my chops coming up there it was late in the game so I had warmed up a little bit and and he just grooved one uh you know belt High I was using marwin Gonzalez’s pink Mother’s Day bat because they give us a like a hodg podge of of random equipment that we can use that they have left over so there was a mahiro Tanaka bat a Rob ref Snider bat and I I fell in love with the the marwin bat and yeah it was the the single best moment of my life probably uh because I thought it was gone and uh I’ll try to be better at at Fenway now but I’m looking forward to that game for sure one of one of the last times I ever pitched I got Elliot Johnson out who was a uh he was in the World Series I threw a cutter down and in at the USA baseball stadium and he’ll ground out to first base and that was pretty much the the end of the line I had a really good year in 2016 in this men’s league but by 2019 there the guy who wrote my mortgage was pitching against us and he struck me out like three times and I was like I’m done I can’t like it struck out by bankers and like if you’re an ex- college player ex Pro Player cool but when you’re you’re riding mortgages and striking me out it’s time to hang it up but uh speaking of strikeouts how about Luis heel man 2.11 erra Ken Rosenthal said today that the Yankees might back off of him when Garrick Cole comes back do you agree with that and you know how do you take a potential Sai Young candidate at this point out of the rotation kid having a fantastic rookie season we we honestly could talk about this for the entire program because it’s such a big story with the team right now I mean every time he’s going out there the 14 strikeouts before this now giving up only one hit and it it honestly probably could have been an error on vulpi the one hit that that heel did give up the numbers are historic he’s he’s pitching his way into the history books he’s showing what he can do when healthy because again this is his first full season uh since undergoing Tommy John surgery a couple of years ago and and that’s the the bottom line Derek is that I don’t think the Yankees should overexert him here as good as he has been and that’s why I think rosenthal’s report or maybe that was just his opinion too uh it is spoton to a certain extent you don’t want him going out there and throwing 200 Innings I I added it up earlier at the Ballpark I think between the minors and the majors in 2021 he threw just over a hundred Innings and that’s the most that he’s ever had in his pro career in a single season and he’s already over halfway to that I think he got to 55 and a third as of today so you know he’s going to get to that point and he’s never been there before but the caveat is and this was a question that was asked to both Boon and heel today is how are you feeling it certainly looks like he’s getting stronger or or certainly not deteriorating in the slightest and and the consensus is that he’s he’s doing good and that’s a testate to one the fact that he’s healthy but two just the the routine that he has and learning from from the Matt Blake and the rest of the coaching staff but also gar Cole who calls like uh and and a part of the coaching staff for him and having that routine and and learning to to execute and get better between starts and continue to improve with the secondaries that was what uh when I asked Boon what has impressed him the most today with heel it was the fact that he can use his fast ball or his change up or his slider in any count and he was showing that today as he has in every sing will start so they’ve got a little bit of a a pitching predicament on the horizon here where you know you could make a case for he’ll sticking around I think you could make a case for maybe taking Nestor out because he’s got the highest ER but he’s been so good at home I don’t think Clark Smith’s going anywhere and it’s certainly not going to be rodon or or strowman with how much they’re making and and they’re the veterans and the Staples in there too so Boon didn’t rule out a six-man rotation I I think classically these things kind of take care of themselves though is not returning imminently just yet it’s still three four five weeks away uh and and he’s got some ramping up to do in a rehab assignment and all that so it’s something that we can continue to talk about but but yeah I I don’t think heel should go anywhere anytime soon so long as he’s pitching this well and and feeling as good as he is yeah if he’s got five more starts between now and when Garett Cole comes back I mean if he’s 10 and one with a 2 erra it’s really tough to say okay go down to Triple A or or go to the bull it’s tough to do that but he’s having that kind of season I could see and he’s getting better every time out you can see that GAR Cole’s tutelage is helping and correct me if I’m wrong gar Cole is gonna be an elite pitching coach the day he retires I don’t know if that’s something that he wants to do but but he would be very good at it he’s he’s so charismatic off the field but he’s also such a student of the game and you’re seeing that with you know I think I saw a clip on on Twitter I meant to ask about this after the game but it looked like Cole kind of Mo to Rizzo to call for a m visit yeah and and that turned out to be a huge moment in the game where he had a couple extra minutes to to gather and then get out of that jam I think that was in the the sixth um yeah I mean he he he certainly comes across as a coach and and he’s such a savant it’s kind of like the the Michael King and the Clark Schmidt they’re they’re so good at the X’s and O’s of pitching but he’s also he gets along with everybody and he’s a quirky personality so he he’s got all the bases covered I love I love list to Garett Cole give interviews but unless you ask him if if he used sticky stuff and then he sits there for five minutes but uh I digress would you make a house Stein R’s comments this week where he said the Yankees this is you know our payroll is not financially sustainable for us and yada ya y I don’t know if I buy it to me that kind of feels like hey I’m getting ready to start negotiations over Juan stto let me put out there that the budget’s kind of tight just to set expectations so that Scott Boris doesn’t say okay you want an extension a billion dollars you know to me that’s kind of what it really felt like because the Yankees have plenty of money let’s be honest they do I think my biggest takeaway was that you have to prepare for the Yankees to not bring most of their pending free agents back and I’m not going to include stto in there because I think the plan will be to to bring stto back and if they do the money is going to be invested in him and I think that means gaber’s not coming back clay Holmes isn’t coming back Verdugo isn’t coming back I I wrote everybody down uh Canley Leisa and and Rizzo has a club option which is a little tougher because of how close he is with judge and he has his moments and he’s also such an anchor in terms of leadership and and the off the- field aspects but I think this also signals kind of even more of a youth movement maybe for next year if you bring stto back you’re probably going to see the the Caleb Durbin and the ybit Vivas on the infield and maybe Ben rice over at first and the Outfield it’s it’s all the big names it’s Spencer Jones and Jason Dominguez Everson pereira’s kind of hanging around I was in Scranton the other day and and he’s he’s made an adjustment recently to try to fix his biggest weaknesses and the swing and miss and and the the whiff rate all that stuff so I think that that would be one way to offset just purely the cost of admission in terms of bringing SoDo back which is what they have to do right I mean he’s been so good he’s exceeded expectations that were already in the stratosphere and and how watching this season must be ruing the day that that Soto won’t be a Yankee and and whether that’s uh the beginning of next season which they certainly hope won’t be the case or if it’s 14 years from now when he’s finally hanging it up uh they they got to find a way to keep him around yeah the uh home stand that he just had was absolutely incredible I’ve never seen a lefty that has opposite field power the way that Juan stto does he’s hit some balls that have almost gone into the left field bleachers he sprays it Line to Line I I mean I just it must be some kind of a physics thing that’s different about his swing because he just absolutely hits these balls that are deep in the zone that you know most guys would foul these pitches off and he’s putting them 15 rows deep in the seats I don’t get it I just don’t get it it’s weird there was one Homer that he hit off of the the advertisements on the back wall of the the bullpen I think it was overshadowed a little bit that was in that series Where Stanton hit a ball 120 and and I think judge hit a a very far home run as as he often does as well um but you’re right I mean he’s got power to all fs and that was kind of why the narrative was oh he’s a lefty he’s going to tear up the short porch I don’t think he’s even hit one short porch homer so far when he does pull it it’s to the bleachers and right and he has this propensity like you said to to go to Left Center and it’s either a double off thewall or or it’s in the bullpen yeah unbelievable you mentioned shortly ago that you were at Triple A you were down in the minor leagues um you had written an article about will Warren who is one of the Yankees Top pitching prospects who last I saw had a seveno something ER in the minor leagues this year what’s the story with him is it a mechanical thing is he just getting hit harder by the you know better hitters as he moves up or or what’s the deal the sense that I got and mind you I was only parachuting in for one day so I I I was hoping to to get to see him at his best because he is a very talented pitcher and that hasn’t gone away despite the the 762 ER ra but he gave up nine earned runs uh the most that he has in a single game in his pro career against the Triple A Mets G man shoy hit this home run speaking of lefties going to left Center it was I think it was like 440 feet or something like that but yeah the the the sense that I got while I was there was that he’s just missing his spots he’s he’s getting into not great counts and he had this adjustment period because I I did get a chance to talk to him very briefly after the game which was a a 12 to one loss so kudos to him for taking a couple minutes to talk which is exactly what he’s going to have to do when he is in the big league so that’s good good practice for him um but what was I saying remind me what I was saying you know you had a minute to talk to him and and kudos to him for uh taking the time you know he was uh he was n runs yeah yeah yeah last last year when he did get called up to Triple A I remember he had an erra over six I think for his first chunk of starts and that’s kind of the thing with him right now that he’s just trying to figure out and and make sure that he can trust his stuff I think that’s the bottom line because we saw in spring training he he was on the brink of winning a spot in in the opening day roster I think if Luis heel didn’t have that one start in Clear Water and really start to get hot uh towards the end of March it would have been Warren that would have made the team in fact I think I might have even said to you that I thought it was GNA be Warren because he was pitching so well um so it really just comes down to maybe he’s getting unlucky he’s missing over the middle he’s he’s getting behind in the count where he has to go to his fast ball in certain situations really a perfect storm in the worst way but like I said I mean he he does have the talent to perform as a reason why he’s such a highly touted Prospect and it it’s ironic in a way that the Yankees haven’t needed anybody like that their rotation has just been so reliable and stable and and historically effective I mean you look at the numbers they’ve been so good there hasn’t been a stretch like this in in Yankees franchise history I believe in terms of their last 11 starts so someone is going to go down even when they have Cole coming back and you know Warren’s going to try to figure it out before then because he might be that guy that gets called up so speaking of the minor leagues DJ lahu is working his way back through the bushes he’s supposedly going to possibly be back when the Yankees play the angels on the west coast trip did you have a chance to see him at all and if so how’d he look I didn’t he was in uh he was in Brooklyn the last couple of days with Hudson Valley and then he was in Somerset before that I do make a lot of minor league trips but I just didn’t cross over with him um do you think that when he comes back he’s still going to be the leadoff man or do you think that vul’s kind of I feel like vulpi with a 16 game hitting streak hitting over 320 the last 15 or so games I feel like he’s kind of seized that leadoff spot and and taken it away from DJ right that that’s my thinking too I think a couple of weeks ago maybe I would have said you know if if a healthy lameu and and maybe second half lameu of last year because he’s not going to recapture his old uh batting title form necessarily but he looked much better at the end of last season and vuli was struggling for a little bit once he did move the leadoff spot but that clip right there I wanted to bring up I mean that’s something that lameu isn’t capable of right that’s that’s stretching a single into a double then stealing third and putting stto in a position where all he needs to do is just get the ball through the infield and it’s an insurance run and that that’s such a valuable thing to have at the top of your order not to mention the fact that that vulpi does have the power to go the other way and and hit a ball into the seats and and like you said the hitting streak is great but he’s getting on base he’s working the count I mean he’s seeing so many pitches per at bat I think one of my favorite moments recently in in uh the club house you know postgame press conferences is Carlos rodon was asked about the length of the lineup and he just went on this tangent like going through each different person from vulpi to stto to judge and was like man this lineup is really good I didn’t realize how good it was um but when he was talking about vulpi it’s you know you’ve got a guy who’s who’s going to see five six pitches and you know that Soto’s looming on Deck so you don’t want want him to get on because then he’s going to steal second and stto is hitting almost 500 with runners in scoring position so yeah again not to say that lahu doesn’t get on base when he’s at his best and you know we’ll see what happens when he does come back if he’s spraying line drives to right field and and capitalizing on mistakes because that’s what he does when he’s you know in his in his vintage form but I I don’t think that they’re going to play lameu every single day either he’s got to ease back this is an injury that’s taken him you know over a quarter of the season to to get back you know to the big leagues with so you’ve also got Oswaldo Cabrera and John birdie that have been playing well too so there has to be a way to get everybody in and get them their reps and I wonder if gabber Torres at times will be the odd man out too if lameu was ready enough to play second base you you could put birdie and Cabrera over there at third I guess you could theoretically put them at second too um but I don’t know if they would usurp glaber in that way if you know what I mean yeah I like what I’ve seen from birdie but top of the order I mean you mentioned it’s just such a dead man’s gambut I mean you’ve got you got vuli leading off and if you give him anything that’s too good to hit he can crush it like he can hit home runs on it if you pitch him carefully too carefully he’ll draw a walk so you pretty much got to pitch to him and let him hit and then once he gets on base if you’re throwing breaking balls and pitching around stto he can steal second base and then once he steals second base Soto’s hitting 500 with runners in scoring position and if you decide to pitch around stto then all of a sudden you got Aaron judge up with two on and nobody out and you got Stanton or or Rizzo behind him who are both you know putting up decent years it’s like my God like if you don’t get vulpi out you’re in for a tough inning like you really are and and stto doesn’t let up against anybody that’s why I like him batting in front of Aaron judge and I’m glad they stuck with that because he’ll pass the Baton like that’s his game he’s not going to go out of the zone no matter you know who’s hitting behind him right so I would rather him pass the Baton to judge in a spot for a three-run home run then pass it to you know Rizzo or or someone who’s not as dangerous right so I mean it’s just the best top of the order that I’ve ever seen and we’ll touch on that but you mentioned Gaber Torres uh is it physical is it mental I mean he he’s shown some signs of Life lately but it’s still he’s not Gaber Torres that we’ve seen in the past what the hell’s going on I’m not sure yeah there there really aren’t that many encouraging signs in his Advanced metrics either and I feel like we had this exact same conversation a couple of weeks ago where you look at his baseball Sant page and it’s not like the Austin Wells situation where he was hitting the ball really hard and getting unlucky um you know glaber does have his moments like you said there was the the big home run the other night uh where he almost brought them back into the game and that was huge and clutch and he needed it uh but he hasn’t been able to turn those flashes into consistent you know production and you almost feel for him because this is his big chance to to get a huge contract and at this point if this continu continues one I I do think that he’ll get a little less playing time as the season goes on because if everybody’s healthy someone’s not going to be in the lineup every day and two you wonder what contract he is going to get in free agency is it a situation where he signs a a two-year deal with an opt out or something like that when this is his big year you know he’s he’s what 27 28 uh this is his chance to get a you know a six figure excuse me eight figure contract and and I don’t know if he’s going to get it this point so it’s a very long season and whenever we ask Boon or or the hitting coaches or anything like that they’re they’re very fond of glaber and they always say that we’re not worried about him he’s going to figure it out but it’s been over 50 games at this point at a certain point he’s got to try to try something new or you know remember when he was hitting lead off and and he didn’t have it there either so you can’t even move him to a different part in the lineup because he’s already in in the bottom bottom half and bottom third do you have any idea when ybit Vivas or chase Hampton are D back we’re getting a lot of questions in the comments about that uh vivos is on a rehab I believe and when I inquired about that the other day because you know he he’ll go back to Triple A when he is healthy um the sense that I got from Trevor amicone who’s the the hitting coach there was that one they’re they’re extremely excited about him and his his offensive profile is you know tailor made for for Yankee Stadium and what the Yankees like because he’s he’s a contact guy and he’s also got huge pulls side power um but two it’s it’s that he’s he’s finally getting closer um that was something where he had a a fracture on his face from something that happened in spring training worked all the way back and then I think he played in one game and he just wasn’t feeling right it was still almost like the the situation with Anthony Rizzo I believe would be a decent comparison to that so they’re just taking it really slowly um trying to be super cautious because as much as it’s been two plus months now and that’s a long time in the span of of his development for right now it’s it’s a blip on the radar for his long-term picture and he hasn’t played that much in Triple A in his pro career looking back to what he did with the Dodgers so getting him back and having an extended stretch for him to really show what he can do and continue to develop it might put him in a position to be the starting second baseman next year I don’t I don’t think we can rule that out necessarily all right let’s finish off with one kind of I’m G to put you on the spot who would you say is the Team MVP right now Aaron judge or Juan stto so Soto’s been more consistent judge has a higher Ops and more home runs and he plays a tougher position what do you got oh man and I have to choose one of them you got to pick one baby there can be only one um I I want to say stto but in terms of recency bias I’ll go with judge just because of of what he means to the team overall and and there was something that that Boon said today uh he was in The Dugout and he you know leaned over to Brad osus and was like you know look look up at the scoreboard his Ops is over a thousand and you know less than a month ago it was in the 700s right he’s just been on one of those vintage chairs recently and you’re you’re really seeing what this offense is capable of when he’s at his best because this is this is really As Good As It Gets where every every game he’s churning out extra base hits and a lot of them are are leaving the yard as well but it probably is STO I think in the grand scheme of things just because like you said how consistent and he’s been and every at bat with him I mean it’s appointment viewing with with the both of them right now though too and that’s that’s what you hope with this Duo and I don’t know if you’re gonna ask about this too but best Duos in Yankees history yeah this has got to be up there right and it makes you wonder what they’d be capable of if they do lock down stto for for a decade and Beyond yeah I mean man Maris Garrick Ruth I mean this has got to be up there in terms of just in baseball history and certainly in my lifetime I’ve seen some good ones Ortiz and Manny Ramirez certainly jumps out you know um when bonds and Jeff Kent were at their Peak that was an unbelievable righty Lefty I think having the righty Lefty combination makes it that much better because it’s like you know you can’t I mean you could change pitches but you’re not going to do that in the first inning right I mean so it’s just uh it’s just a gauntlet it’s just a gauntlet I’ve never seen anything like it yeah I mean it’s it’s to two of the top four or five hitters in the game and you got to face them back to back in the first inning and also clutch late yeah it’s it’s so daunting for opposing pitchers and it’s no wonder that the team is playing this well right I mean this is why they went out and traded for him Soo that is because of just how generational he is it’s it’s almost like it’s everything the Yankees wanted with judge and Stanton together right and Stanton just hasn’t stayed on the field for these last several years um but but when he’s at his best too and you got Verdugo hitting four and Rizzo 6 it’s such a long and and treacherous path to get through that lineup and then you got to do it over and over yeah we call it nuclear Stanton because he has these short little bursts where he’s just Unstoppable and they used to be during his hey day like with the Marlins a month or two long and they like as you get older those streaks get shorter and shorter right we saw that with A-Rod to share we see it with everybody as they get older you know those streaks become you know two weeks and then it’s a week and then it’s a series you know and then it’s a hot game once in a while like Josh Donaldson and then you’re gone uh but I think Stanton is still in that period where he can control a series right four or five games and that’s what gives me hope about him because what if that happens in the World Series what if that happens in the ALCS because he’s that type of guy where he responds to pressure you know so like that 2020 Stanton in the playoffs I mean it was it was what five home runs in five games or something like that get out of here I mean unbelievable that’s my CR that’s my response to whenever I hear a fan criticize Stanton is as as bad as he has been in the regular season at times including when he’s just not on the field at all because he’s been hurt so much what he’s done in the postseason is commendable across the board and he’s also been so accountable and candid to the media like he’s handling that aspect of being in New York so well um obviously I think it would be considered a disappointment and and even a failure if they never win a championship with him in Pinstripes because that’s what he was brought over to do and he certainly hasn’t lived up to just the the grand scheme of things that the expectations that the former MVP that was coming over from the Marlins uh but but he has been so consistently great in the playoffs and like you said if if the lineup is clicking like this in a postseason series it would take such such a perfect performance from an opposing pitching staff to win four games in a seven game stet right I mean I don’t know how another team could hold this offense down when it’s at his when it’s at its best for that long of a stretch and that’s what it’s going to come down to are they playing well at the end of the season going into when it matters most and are they healthy because adversity is going to strike they are going to lose one of those guys or two of those guys at some point during the summer but you know can can they have that full strength group versus what happened in 22 when they lost some of those guys and they didn’t have them down the stretch you know it’s not unheard of for everybody to be healthy I’m crossing my fingers we’ll see what happens but uh Max Goodman Yankees beat Rider follow him on X and all that good stuff he joins us about once a month to talk about what’s going on with the team Max I appreciate it good to talk to you and we’ll talk to you again in a few weeks sounds like a plan thanks so much have a good weekend appreciate it guys happy Memorial Day all that good stuff [Applause] hey [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]

6 man rotation and save some arms and be strong for the play offs!!!!!
Just throwing an unorthodox idea out there. When Cole comes back, why not have Gil and Cortez or Schmidt platoon pitch 4 innings each every 5 starts??? It’ll definitely stretch out Gil’s innings.
Why were pitchers in most of the 20th century able to pitch more complete games and more innings than today's pitchers
Max forgets adversity has already struck. Still waiting for Cole’s 2024 debut and to see which DJ we get back.
Great interview. Max has some good insights & stories. 👍🏾
Why not just put dj at 2nd and keep Waldo & Berti at 3rd? Torres is playing like a bench player. Let him play the bench. You aren't signing him next year anyway
Awesome job. Thanks
Here we go let's baby Gil. They're going to mess him up like they did Joba and Hughes
Luis Gil gets richer 💰 everything he goes out to pitch!
Feel free to try to trade Rodon!
AL MVP..SOTO
AL ROTY & CY YOUNG..GIL.
Hal Steinbrenner is a complete clown! Enough with the fucking payroll. The Yankees need to resign Soto for sure and I believe they will.
I love how the lineup is finally balanced and some lefty’s.
I don’t see Torres coming back unfortunately.
