this episode of on the beat is brought to you by Eng Les shop online with Eng Les curbside pickup new curbside stores opening every week please welcome Mike Griffith welli everybody Mike Griffith here welcome to this week’s edition of Engles on the beat and of course more Georgia news to talk about a lot of goings on and some opinions today that I want to give into in my second segment can’t wait for my five biggest offseason questions but I want to open up with the news of the week and that was Kirby Smart becoming the highest paid coach in college football $13 million a year and you might wonder about that amount considering Kirby when he started I think he made about three million back in 2016 called inflation if you will but the reality of it is is that college football is a big money game and Georgia has benefited greatly you look at their athletic budget around $200 million I think that’s the fifth highest in the country really some amazing growth across the board we also saw that Josh Brooks the athletic director now in year three he’s making 1.3 million and remember when Josh got hired he was one of the youngest ads in the league he was about 40 years old but he is so sharp and I think his football background having been once a student manager for Nick Sabin at LSU right and then even did a little coaching I think he might have been a uh one of Jimbo fer G this is a guy that’s been around the game a long time he was Mark Ricks director of football uh this is a guy that understands Kirby Smart and the Georgia football machine and yet you’ve also got to give Josh Brooks Credit for all the hires that he’s made most recently you’re seeing some great things happening with Wes Johnson and the baseball team we’re going to talk about that in our hot and cold segment a little bit later on in the show and of course we’ve seen Josh do some hires in track uh and field as well uh basketball Mike White you’ve seen that basketball class is getting built up they’re getting bigger stronger faster guys I think Georgia basketball could be a fringe NCAA tournament team next season based on some of the transfers that I’ve seen come in through the transfer portal so big race for Josh Brooks big race for Kirby SM and I broke the Kirby thing you could say of course H why wouldn’t he be the highest paid coach in college football the guy hasn’t lost a regular season game in three years you got to go back to the 2020 season to see the last time Georgia lost a regular season game and I don’t know if you all remember that game but it was in Jacksonville Jordan Davis was missing with an elbow injury Richie lount was missing from the starting safety position and uh as I recall I think ston Bennett got injured in that game and so did Marcus rosemy ja it took a lot of things to go wrong for Georgia to lose back to Florida flid in 2020 in the regular season Kirby Smart another stat that I love about this guy and I did a column on this the three reasons why Kirby deserved to be the highest paid coach in college football one of them was coaching acument and I don’t think he gets enough credit for the x’s and the O’s because everyone knows Kirby is a guy that recruits so effectively and delegates so well on the sideline but from an X’s an O standpoint do you realize Georgia has won 20 straight games when it’s had more than a week to prepare you got to go all the way back to the Texas Sugar Bowl after the 2018 season to find a game that Georgia lost when they had more than one week to prepare remember that Florida game they lost in 2020 typically you got a week off that was a covid year so they didn’t have a week off before that Florida loss all the way back to the 2018 season Tom Herman who’s now at Florida Atlantic was the head coach at Texas at that time and do you know that of all the active coaches in college football Tom Herman back in 2018 at Texas was the most recent to beat Kirby Smart head-to-head he might say well no wait a minute Mike georg’s lost some games since then well they have but Nick Sabin retired Dan Mullen at Florida I guess we’ll call him retired maybe back in the game and then will muschamp South Carolina working on the Georgia staff is a gr assistant the other coach Ed oron no longer at LSU so think about that you got to go all the way back to 2018 to find another head coach active head coach that beat Kirby Smart head-to-head great stat came out of the NFL draft adding more perspective to Kirby Smart and the success that he’s had do you realize Kirby’s had more first round draft picks 17 than he has losses in eight years 16 and five of those losses came in year one so coaching Acumen at the top of my list I don’t think you win 20 straight games with more than a week to prepare if you’re not a guy that can out scheme and out coach and out prepare uh the 29 game win streak had never happened in SEC history ever and it’s amazing when you think about past generations and the way they were able to stockpile talent and how heavy topheavy the league was and the fact that there wasn’t a four team playoff or for that matter an SEC Championship Game you would have thought I would have thought that one of those SEC teams before Georgia 2021 into 2023 won 29 straight games you would have thought that one of those Dynamic teams maybe one of those Alabama teams maybe Florida with Steve sper maybe Tennessee under Philip Fulmer at some point sh Jordan at Auburn Pat D at Auburn at some point wouldn’t somebody have won no they didn’t Kirby Smart in Georgia did the 29 game win streak in an era more competitive than ever I go back to the 2021 team this is what’s truly remarkable 15 players were drafted off of that Team 15 that was an NFL record there had never been more than 15 players drafted off one team in the history of the seven round NFL draft another 13 players left in the portal and four of those players were former starters there had never been a program that had that much attrition that lost that many players in history in history no team had lost that many players much less that quality of players so what did George do in 2022 he went 15 and0 the 29 game win streak only had two wins from that historic 2021 team the nuts and bolts of it was 15 games from that 2022 team that had to replace 15 NFL draft picks and four former starters that left via the portal 13 that were in the two deep that’s you know 28 players out of your 44 too deep were gone and Georgia went 15 now think about that think about that reload think about that development think about that coaching and then you roll that right into 2023 had another 10 guys drafted after 2022 had to replace your starting quarterback Georgia won the first 12 games George is a Carson backck underthrow away from winning the SEC Championship remember when Carson underthrew Aron Smith in the SEC Championship game they settled for a field goal that was a four-point play and a three-point loss that’s how close Georgia was so coaching Acumen is one of the three things uh that I said was a reason why Kirby Smart deserved the race and to be the highest paid coaching col the future was another one right you look at Georgia and Kirby’s 48 years old this contract extension I believe goes through 2033 13 million year at 48 years old Kirby’s in the prime of his career I I really believe that now I I don’t know that I think Kirby’s going to go to 2033 probably guess not but I think he’d serve out half that contract the fact that Nick Sabin just retired from Alabama and for that matter Jim Harbaugh left Michigan I think George’s got incredible momentum and when we talk about where we’re at with nil and I know there’s been a lot of chatter about off the- field collective bargaining agreements but right now money still talks there’s been players that have come said hey I’ve taken less money to go to Georgia than somewhere else because of George’s pension for developing NFL Talent part of that is the talent that’s already on the team when you’re practicing against the best or some of the best you know iron sharpens iron it helps raise the bar and so the momentum that’s been generated in the Georgia program is is like no other you know they’ve won two of the last three national titles they’re the most recent SEC team to win Inter National Title so that Glides me right into the program that Kirby’s built and yes some of the structure was from Nick Sabin and Kirby’s time coaching with Nick Sabin in Alabama but remember Kirby left Alabama after the 2015 season it’s nine years ago a lot has happened and changed in college football since 2015 not just rules but nil transfer portal a lot of legislation so while I think a lot of what Nick Sab talk Kirby translated in 2016 I I don’t really know how much of Nick Sabin we’re seeing now I think we’re seeing the Kirby Smart product and and sain wasn’t the only coach that Kirby coached under Mark ricked spent some time under Mark Rick spent some time under Bobby Bowen and of course his father Sunny smart and then he played for Ray Golf and Jim Donan and I don’t think these coaches get enough credit for helping to develop Kirby Smart I really don’t again I know the The Lazy narrative is uh Nick Sab and this and Nick sa and that but I think there’s a lot more to who Kirby is I mean I’ve interviewed and spent time with both of these coaches over the last 10 years they’re very different people um Nick saan is a very different person than Kirby Smart again I think Kirby gives Nick plenty of credit and appreciation for the opportunity to get out and T Kirby was a key to Alabama’s recruiting and development certainly was the defensive coordinator for four of those national titles uh that that saving one there but on the back end I don’t think Kirby Smart’s getting enough credit for developing into the coach that he is and I say that because I think that the Georgia mentality is like no other and I’ve tried to tell people that it’s really not for everybody players some players is if you don’t have a very high opinion of yourself if you’re not willing to put in the extra work if you’re not willing to fight the fight and and start out at the bottom uh if you can’t reload quickly I don’t think this is the place Jaylen Walker had a quote and I Jaylen Walker one of those another one of those incredibly talented hybrid players that can play off the edge they can play linebacker I think he’s really going to come to the Forefront this year is one of the stars of the team and again we we’ll talk about the five biggest offseason questions here here in just a minute but Jaylen Walker’s quote was our goal here is to make history every day you might wonder what he meant by that I was talking about practices and I was talking about how teams get up for Georgia how every Saturday whoever Georgia plays is gonna give their best effort their best game and Jaylen kind of trumped that by saying that Georgia Looks To Make History every day what he was saying is Georgia practices like that every day it doesn’t seem logical I know Kirby’s talked about the the rubber band effect he talks about how he tries to stretch his team out and push him every day and build some elasticity so that this is a team that can respond Under Pressure so this is a team that doesn’t snap and doesn’t break when they’re pushed to the limits uh in games and they have been pretty clutch in these ones score games but this is all by Design so again the three reasons why Kirby should be the highest paid coach in college football is the program that he’s built the future of the program with him being only 48 years old and then the coaching Acumen you know Kirby’s ability to get his teams prepared and right for every opponent one of the topic I want to cover in this opening segment and that is my favorite picks of the NFL draft and who I think is going to perform really well for Georgia I’ve got lad makoni at the top of my list I love that he’s catching balls from uh Justin Herbert out there with the LA Chargers I saw where Mike Clay one of the fantasy gurus likes this pick the most h h d draft lad makoni on your fantasy football team but I like lad and Los Angeles in general not everyone can handle Los Angeles there’s a lot of distractions but lad is a guy who’s dialed in and lad is a guy who is going to find immediate success and he’s going to be a favorite Target of Justin Herbert because lad can get open by himself you don’t have to try to work something to get him open this is a guy who’s so quick off the line he’s going to catch the ball he’s going to make yards after the catch my favorite pick of the draft from Georgia was lad makoni going to the Chargers with the number 34 overall pick and this was a pick they traded up for so Jim Harbaugh saw lad and said I want that guy he knew who he wanted push the button go get him and when a team want you like that it just increases the chances exponentially that they’re going to find a way to use you number two Brock Bowers someone named Liz Loza I don’t I’ve never heard of Liz Loa but apparently she works for ESPN and she is a fantasy expert Liz deemed Brock Bowers the worst pick of the first round and she did that based off the fact that the Raiders drafted Michael Mayer last year and he was also a tight end well here’s what I think may get a little lost in the shuffle for people double tight end offenses and I think Meyer’s more of a a combo tied end not not that Brock can’t block but why would you right and talking with Nick bom Garner last week and I know a lot of you saw last week’s show and Nick broke down every single Georgia pick if you haven’t seen last week’s show it’s still up on our YouTube page uh you’ll want to check that out but Nick was talking about how with Brock Bowers you’ve got to kind of remove the tight end tag yeah technically he’s a tight end but true enough we we’ve seen how he runs the ball we’ve seen him run deep we’ve seen him take screen passes just a remarkable guy and I think if someone gets too married to the idea that they drafted a tight end early in two consecutive drafts then maybe that wouldn’t make sense until you look a little closer at the player or maybe understand who the player is Brock is my second favorite pick and talking with Hondo Carpenter a guy I know that covers the Raiders the Raiders thought he was one of the top three players in the draft they they were stunned stunned that he fell to number 13 I mean the Raiders it was Christmas morning number three player and I have a story up on this player today that’s Javon Bullard with the Green Bay Packers I think Bullard was pivotal in the secondary not just because of the plays that he made but the attitude that Javon brought Kirby compared him to a little stick of dynamite early in his career because he was able to use him effectively as a Blitzer off the edge he was a guy that could take down the quarterback that could beat the blocks but this is an instinctive guy that plays 100 miles an hour obviously the Marvin Harrison Jr hit everybody remembers that from the Ohio State game but Javon is really good and and run fits he’s very aggressive and he’s got the right mentality and and I watched an interview that he did in Green Bay known as title town the Packers have 13 NFL titles I guess some of those before the merger for sure but this is a guy that said hey there’s a standard at Georgia that I played to and I’m G to bring that to Green Bay there’s four George Bulldogs on that Green Bay team Quay Walker Eric Stokes Devonte Wyatt and Javon Bullard that’s a pretty good start I know we talk a lot about the eagles and their Georgia players I’m G to keep an eye on that Green Bay defense because I think javon’s going to be starting next to Xavier McKenna next year I think the Packers are quietly getting pretty nasty on the defensive side of the ball I want to take a break right now when I come back from this break we’re gonna recognize Engles in just a second I’m gonna go over my five biggest offseason questions about Georgia football they’re preseason number one you know I’m bullish on them but there’s still questions to be answered and we’re going to deliver those answers just like Les delivers the goods no questions when it comes to Les we know we’re going to get service consistency they’re going to come through in the clutch let’s take a moment and recognize our sponsor Engles when I come back the five biggest questions about Georgia football in the offseason do you know know Les only sells USDA choice and Prime cuts of meat maybe it’s time to reward yourself our butchers cut all our meat fresh in the store every day grass-fed organic you name it not only that we’ll even cut it to order just the way you like it and we grind meat fresh in the store multiple times a day it’s all in the bag that’s the best meat in town for the best folks in town Engles low prices love the savings come back to the show and of course the biggest questions of the off season it starts with the most pivotal player maybe in college football maybe the number one overall draft pick in the 2025 draft maybe georg’s first Heisman Trophy winner since hersel Walker Carson Beck Carson Beck to me I can’t say enough about Carson in his growth and his talent and his abilities and his upside I’ve said this before he the most talented Georgia quarterback since Matthew Stafford was the number one overall pick in 2009 we know that Carson Beck Has Talent what we don’t know is Carson back a championship quarterback you might say that’s not a fair question and maybe it’s not but what I have to go on as a head-to-head matchup last year against Alabama’s quarterback and I saw who played better in that particular game now I don’t think there’s any any question that Carson back is a better quarterback than Jaylen milro I they’re nine out of ten times I’m taking Carson back but that afternoon in Atlanta Jaylen milro delivered and Carson was just a little bit off again one Carson back underthrow short of beating Alabama Aron Smith was open Carson underthrow I don’t think you’re GNA see that this year and part of the reason why I’m bullish on Carson I’m asking the question I’m kind of answering it is because Kirby said it’s time to let the cat play and I felt like that was a reference to maybe Mike Bobo and Kirby or Kirby and Mike Bobo maybe being a little bit more restrictive on Carson than they should have been hindsight right the first thing you got to do when you play quarterback is not get your team beat and George is very good at having efficiency at that position now that Carson has the green light I think we’re going to see some throws and some plays out of him game-winning plays game-winning throws it seemed like at the end of that game against Alabama Georgia wasn’t going to be stopped the problem was they couldn’t get a stop when they needed it milro was hot the 35 yard scramble right what if they had turned Carson loose earlier in the game we’re gonna find out I think 2024 this Georgia offense is going to be wide open and that leads me to my second second biggest question during this off season and that’s going to be who is the number one receiver now Dom love it was a guy that made a sensational catch in the gday game and probably will lead the team in receptions just by the nature of his position I think Dom love it is a guy sort of like lad makoni gets open on his own really quick off the line of scrimmage you throw the ball to him underneath he gets the yards after the catch he makes the tough catches is he the true number one though is he the clutch goto guy or is that Dylan Bell we saw Carson connect with Dylan a couple times in that game not a lot and of course not George is not going to put their best plays out there for everyone to see they’re not gonna they’re only going to give you a a shell of the offense in the gday game because everybody Scouts it everybody’s got tape of it and everybody that Georgia plays has tape of that game not necessarily for the plays but they’re goingon to look at the Personnel on the players that’s a big part of the matchup so who is the number one receiver is it going to be Dom love it is he going to be the go-to guy and have the 100 yard gains how many might he have is it going to be Dylan Bell I I’ve seen flashes from Dylan Bell but I don’t know that I’ve seen him take over a game as a receiver it’d be a great story if he did remember last year he took some snaps at running back I thought he was fantastic as a running back I like that hybrid role Kobe young was a guy Georgie got from Miami this is a big tall 6’4 receiver really good in the Red Zone can Kobe be effective up in down the field and a guy that made a play at the end of that gday game on that final drive when Carson took him down in under a minute to tie the game was rahah Thomas I’m G tell you Rah Thomas looks good in the uniform if this guy has put it together if he is able to know his assignments this could be a big time impact player could could sneak up on you ra Thomas and Aran Smith right aran’s a guy that’s worked so hard we know has the track speed probably a 4-21 guy I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Aron Smith s an NFL combine record next year in the 40-yard dash and he likes to call himself a football player first so could Arion be an impact player receiver at long last remember early on all he did was catch touchdowns I’ve seen him catch a lot of other types of passes I think he’s worked really hard number three for me is the running back rotation and specifically Branson Robinson how ready will Branson Robinson be you’ve seen me WR about Branson and you’ve heard Branson’s comments that he thinks he can have a thousand yard season he thought he could have played in the gday game if he had to couple years away removed from carrying the ball in a game how really ready will Branson Robinson be or will you know the 240 pound gonna be real interested to see how Trevor Kirby is really good at the roster management and keeping the best players is healthy for the stretch Drive I don’t know that you can lean on etn early in the season and expect him to be fresh and ready to go come playoffs so the management of the running back position is going to be very interesting I think they need Branson Robinson healthy I think they’re banking on it or else I don’t think Andrew Paul would have gone in the portal this this Nate Frasier kid out of Southern California can he bring any juice to the table could there be an impact I mean it’s modern day High School best high school in the country year in and year out or one of them be real curious to see how that kid fits in uh number four we’re going to the defensive side of the ball that’s secondary it’s such a competitive situation I didn’t even try to tackle it I mean star position you want to say Juan Al Aguero is a sophomore could he be the guy but Kiren Jones and jakori Tom still cross trainining there I’m not sure it’s going to be that settled I get the feeling Corner uh Humphrey and and dalen Everett to me who’s going to play next to Malachi Starks at safety I mean you got Dan Jackson there you got David Daniels there uh we mentioned jakori Thomas how about Jake Pope the transfer from Alabama KJ Balden what I see from all this I asked the question so I have to answer it it’s I don’t see an answer a definitive answer I see uh state of fluidity I see players that are going to get better and compete all year long I just don’t think it’s as simple as Kirby’s going to knock this out and here’s a starting lineup and then go I think these players are going to compete all year long for these spots and I think that’s a really healthy situation when you have that sort of depth where players can compete at all these different positions I think that’s huge uh and I think it behooves the defense now before I get to my number five question I want to point out the areas that I didn’t ask about no one’s asking about the offensive line it’s a given it’s solid it’s one of the top tour three of the nation I’m not even asking about the defensive line and last year I really beat these guys up because Kirby called him out for not having any training records or Havoc makers I think it’s inevitable that this is going to be one of the top two or three defensive lines in the nation and yeah I’m saying that I don’t know who the first-rounder is maybe Michel Williams I suppose but Nazir stack house is getting some buzz and if Stack’s getting some Buzz then Brinson can’t be far behind we know Jamal Jarrett’s been on the team we know Christian Miller was a guy that looked at going elsewhere he’s not sticking around if he’s not playing uh we know big baby’s almost ready um Hall Jordan Hall uh there’s a lot of depth and a lot of talent here these guys are going to do an outstanding go CH Chaz chamblas is going to be fighting uh for snaps over there Jaylen Walker’s a hybrid guy that front seven CJ Allen can’t say enough about him smile M’s going to be back he could be a first round pick railen Wilson the talent is such that I just have no questions about the defensive front um so linebacker DL not worried about that special teams no questions none not even a drop I mean this is an area that Kirby’s emphasized George is among the best in the nation in the tight end room Oscar DPP lost and lucky a lot of young Talent there Todd Harley’s done remarkable job recruiting and coaching that up so these are the again I want to go over that again the positions I don’t have any questions about offensive line defensive line linebackers special teams and tight ends no questions no questions number five question who’s the backup quarterback who’s the backup quarterback what does the future look like there Jaden Rashad did not come to Georgia to be the number three he came to be the number two he came to be next man up how does Gunner Stockton respond to that what about Ryan pugy did pugy know that a guy was going to be coming via the portal so keep an eye on that position let’s see who two is it could say a lot about the next recruiting class it could say a lot about georg’s Championship hopes for 2025 2026 even so with that I’m going to wrap up segment two those have been my five biggest questions of the offseason right now I’m going to go to the hot and cold segments brought to you by anytime heating cooling and plumbing when we come back from this message I’m going to give you the hottest sport on the Georgia baseball campus and one of the coolest as they get ready for the SEC tournament your family stays comfortable all year long our family of train Comfort Specialists are available anytime to service or repair your system or it may be time to replace your old units with a new trained HVAC system we are a locally owned family business and we carefully select the technicians who we send into your home at any time heating cooling and plumbing we are large enough to handle all of your hbac and plumbing needs but small enough to care call today to take advantage of our three visit annual maintenance plan this is not going to surprise anyone that the hottest team and the hot segment is Georgia baseball if you’ve been paying attention now if you just if you went to the moon for a year and you’ve come back and I’m getting ready to tell you that Georgia is the number 12 team in the nation in baseball that they have the number five RPI in the country with a first year coach and 28 new players that’s that’s what’s happened and and if I told you that Georgia had a player of B B Ruth Collegiate stature you you wouldn’t believe me you you’d say who could this PO I’d say well he was already on the team he was red shirted his first year and last year he was a red shirt freshman he was the national freshman of the year but do you know Charlie Condon Charlie Condon has 33 home runs in 47 games so of course he leads the nation in slugging percentage but did you know he also leads the nation in batting average bizarre this guy is so incredible I I did a story about Charlie Poise and you can read dog nation.com to just kind of get a taste of who this guy is a flavor of it the SEC record for home runs by the way set in 1997 I was covering Alabama baseball back then a guy by the name of Brandon Larsson hit 40 now since then the bats have changed they’re not as alive there’s this BB Corbat that went into existence in 2011 Charlie’s next home run will make him the home run leader since this this bat came into existence in 20 or the BB core legislation so you are seeing the most prolific home run hitter in recent baseball history collegan baseball history you are seeing the most likely number one pick in the draft Georgia now 35- 12 12- 11 13 11 here’s the buzz Georgia plays South Carolina on the road this week three- game series then they come home and play Florida if the dogs win three of those games go three and three there’s a pretty good chance that they’re going to host a regional if they go four and two I think they will Georgia has not hosted a regional since 2019 and they got upset uh by Florida State they were a number four National seed and Florida State came in and knocked them off and then Florida State and this is under Mike Martin went on to knock out of LSU and went to the College World Series so they caught the wrong team at the wrong time this year’s Georgia team looks primed um I looked at the D1 baseball rankings number one right now is Tennessee number two is Clemson number three is Texas A&M Georgia’s got wins against all three of those teams oh by the way singing the Praises of Charlie Condon would you believe that Georgia has the secc pitcher the week in late in Finley it’s all come together Wes Johnson has done a remarkable job it’s been two years since Georgia made the NCAA baseball tournament they were at North Carolina um they got knocked out early long story short it’s been a minute since georg’s gotten out of the Regionals and on of the super regionals Wes Johnson and Charlie Conan trying to change that now coolest team this is tough because at one point they were ranked number three in the nation but the Georgia softball team now uh has lost what I say 11 of their last 21 they’ve gone seven and 11 in the SEC since their start you’d say that’s a team that’s fading and yet I would tell you to keep an eye on this team they were in a very similar situation in 2021 and got hot and made to the World Series this team is talented there’s a lot of graduate students I just think that when you are a veteran team that’s been there and done it it’s hard to sustain tremendous success from the beginning of the season to the end of the season and I don’t want to say it’s not special for them but they’ve been here and done it a lot and this week they’re at the SEC Softball Tournament it’s at Auburn Georgia will play Auburn on Wednesday in softball if Georgia doesn’t play well the SEC Softball Tournament wouldn’t surprise me I don’t really know the relevance of these SEC tournaments in the big picture when I think about baseball or softball but when it comes to the postseason I do believe this Georgia softball team will come alive I do believe though in their Regional they’re going to have to travel more than likely they’re 38- 15 right now and uh 12- 12 in the league they just wrapped up the regular season losing two out of three at Mississippi State number 20 team in the country I think Georgia will be ranked still in the top 20 they have a really high r Pi uh they’ve beaten 14 top 25 teams now a lot of the work they did the hay was in The Barn at the beginning of the Season some of the tournaments they played in but this team seems to have a pension for getting hot at the end of the year and playing their best ball uh we’ll see if the SEC tournament’s included in that that starts this week next week the NCAA tournaments in Earnest so that’s going to put a wrap on this week’s Engles on the beach so I hope you’ve enjoyed the production I’d like to thank thank Kaye Manzel for her production element today thank you Kaylee being behind the camera and
