one all between Chile and Canada the mixed doubles to determine the outc L 15 [Applause] you play much mixed during your time as a pro robber when possible MH usually uh at Wimbledon Olympics hotman cup a couple times [Music] I think sometimes the players out on court can think oh it’s just like normal doubles I’m going to play the same but you really have to have a bit more of an awareness where to go what times how active to be as the guy on the court because you don’t want to do too much I think we saw that a few times yesterday with Casper Roode and and Zev in the first few games trying to get everything and then realizing you can’t be everywhere all at once5 and Fernandez has played a little bit of mix to played at the US Open last year did well made the quarterfinals there so she’ll know what she’s doing 4 a bit like that point really Diaz maybe could have just stayed in that rally waited for Lea to get an opportunity at the net there that feeling of wanting to go big all the time can so Team Canada up and running with the opening game of course it’s not just a Robson alongside me got Court sight Bubsy first of all you’re welcome yep thanks for having me and uh I want to know have you and Josh ever played mixed together throughout the course of your life together well we’ve been playing mixed for the last 17 years together that’s called marriage no uh we have played mixed doubles together on the tour we were not a couple then though okay um couple of uh yeah actually we reached the finals of the Australian Open which uh was pretty good um we uh lost pretty badly though in the finals I think less which just our goal is some stage was just to make it crack the hour mhm and we did that was our success but no it was fun it I love playing I used to love playing mix doubles but it is certainly a little bit more pressure for the guy because they think they have to do much but they don’t because we are very capable aren’t we Laura absolutely there you go I tell you what it’s a very different story story that I heard from Josh but that’s for another day oh can’t wait to hear that one he was broken first by the way as well not that you remember I remember everything getting a first look at that man on the right of course subing in for niiko Jerry is Thomas beros Vera he’s a big boy takes up a lot of space in the four court on the cusp of the top 100 singles and make them tall in Chile 3 15 it’s a big moment to come out here here maybe didn’t know if he was going to play or not probably depended on how Jerry felt after the singles physically whether he wanted to get out on court oh what hands delicious that doesn’t get you decid to tell you what you’re pretty hard to please Steven Diz has exceled here that get off the net court and he’s so close to the net we can’t even pick him up on [Applause] camera really solid from f as she is’s making a lot of returns which is key give yourself the [Applause] opportunity the mix deciding point deciding point is guy to guy Woman to Woman we’ve seen so far from Diaz is a very compact backand return of serve it’ll be interesting if Thomas decides to go there or not I would stay away from it he’s done yes excuse me Laura he heard you but it didn’t work two toow went for the forehand it was a nice forehand block return deep enough that’s the third ball that you kind of just want to roll back in because Fernandez from where she was in the court wasn’t able to get forward or do too much or think about Crossing so patience I think in mixed is key off to the p start team [Music] Canada wow he’s moving so well quick reflexes forus Vera he would be very annoying to have a cross cuz he’s covering the court so well once you’re hesitating we know that in doubles that’s not great you got to pick your [Applause] spots Steven Diaz making some good net four Rays there for Team Canada of course I mix them up apologies oh right [Applause] idea 13 left Daniela Sig out doesn’t have a huge amount of doubles experience definitely not mixed doubles career high doubles ranking 110 way back in 2014 was picked up a fair few titles on the ITF tour I think if years was a dog he’d be a little Jack Russell I can see that you can see that Bubsy yes totally he’s everywhere he’s all over the place in a good way yep snapping at your heels good energy like it can relate that’s nice keep him honest at it see Diaz 15 being super active trying get the first cross in good time to go bang down the line I think that’s important to do every now and then now just to make de think a little bit too game team Canada so after a flyer three games played Canada leads three games to left Canada have bagged them all three zip first [Applause] set well the South Americans are always so energetic in their support Canadians are a little bit more laidback sporting their red and white proudly of course they had a lot of success in team competitions of late have the Canadians with the men they won the ATP cup of course they also won the Davis Cup and then this year with the woman it was The Bu Jun King cup so the money that they investing into tennis in Canada is certainly doing its [Music] [Applause] thing guy on the pck screen spinning some moves that everybody’s keeping an eye on there he is there he is [Music] is time it was a semi breakdown would say he quite had the moves to call it the real thing Felix loved it there he did just trying to see who the number 10 player from Chile is in the National Football team wonder if that’s him low [Music] 15 came off his body I think yeah good try which part I didn’t see it I think it was a hip here we go let’s have a look a bit of everything there yeah the left side yeah she returns so well Ila Fernandez with a lot of depths and it’s easy for the to step in at the right time inbs you speak of depth there and I wish I’d paid more attention to it when I was playing same questions also at you Laura was it something that you were made aware of every time you practiced oh 15 14 you can hardly do a thing wrong at the moment absolute Banger down the line I think yes I would practice it but it wasn’t something that I was necessarily thinking about in match play which was probably not the right idea well if it depends if you play against somebody who plays Sur and Vol or stays back obviously Sur and Vol you want to get it on the feet not many s voles in my time perhaps oh they were around in my time Martina naoa she is a lot older I have to say but she played for a long time Renee [Music] stabs game Team Canada on fire team can red hot team Canada at the moment and once again that depth that you were talking about of the ground strokes of Lea just so difficult to make any inroads against and the reason I asked bubs is I would remember hitting you know forehand Cross Court or backhand Cross cour I’d make 15 20 in a row and I think yeah done a good job but what I wasn’t realizing that so many of them were dropping short in the service box and I only really became more cognizant of depth when I started commentating when it was probably a little too late a little well we all number ones now aren’t we mhm I feel like the depth is something that I was more conscious of actually when I was playing doubles because I was always trying to set my partner up at the net to then get a slightly higher ball and immediately for them to cross so if you are constructing a crosscourt point as the baseliner you are looking for as much depth as possible so that your net player has enough time to feel like they can move in the first place mhm that’s a lovely combination good fire power coming from the [Applause] CH qualified at won this year did Thomas had some good wins mhm beat Aussie hijar in the second round of ques and then beat Sebastian Bas first round of main draw oh I love the little Shimmy Shake and Bake is trying to be a little bit more active at the net now there is [Applause] Vera rookie Bob would have been very happy with those moves 15 [Applause] 14 oh made it yeah CH rifled that forehand to get chile up and running in the mix doubles and team can they needed that cuz remember we’re all squared up at one match a piece this is the decider Canada very much in charge so syney of course has some iconic beaches none perhaps more so than Bondi Beach it’s only 7ks east of the Sydney [Music] CBD it’s about half a mile long and of course a famous surfing spot stunning scenery and it’s got such a a vibrant culture around it good coffee good coffee around there it doesn’t get much better than that right early morning walk dip yeah how’s your surfing skills or you a boogie boarder I’m a boogie boarder surfing is non-existent I realize that [Applause] when you know you have to pop up and my hips don’t do that that can’t just pop anymore it’s it’s slow and steady which doesn’t quite work if you want to catch a wave and that’s his Approach at the moment coming back to tennis have the tell him of this season slow and steady for Felix time was really hampered by injury throughout the course of 2023 hey good energy [Music] now so beros Vera trying to hold serve for the Chans they yet to do so out 59 let see how your surfing skills there up in NOA body surfing yeah okay that’s it so I’ve never it’s not in Josh doesn’t do it so I’ve never really picked it up what surfing fun though L yeah Catch the Wave at the right [Applause] time what about your serving skills Robbie limited I know you have fishing skills Boogie border like Laura grew up on a boogie as we say nicely done this is just what they needed a bit of momentum the Chileans of course I South Africa which has some amazing surf beaches and I can let a little cat out of the bag speaking of Surfing Brazilian Legend Gustavo Quon coming to my Shores to do some surf surfing at the TA end of January big Surfer is gooa like Mark full ofas 15 I wouldn’t have gone I wouldn’t go to too much of a kick serve on the second serve where Diaz is with his back hand because I just feel like he can go line take that ball early and go for the net player all [Applause] day using that momentum suddenly they’re looming large in the rear viw mirror or the Chileans has had some great players over the years especially on the men’s side Mak of Marcelo Rios and how talented was he Nicholas massu Fernando Gonzalez gold medalists of course at the Olympics when the doubles gold 2004 in Athens 15 [Applause] left currently it’s Christian gin and Nico Jerry flying the flag so proudly for the South American country BS just getting getting away from her a bit there too far out in front so that she’s chasing the ball over the Baseline sorry Laura it’s amazing how Square on she is when she serves right I always feel it’s quite a disjointed motion anyway because it’s a bit stop and start with this front arm well we put that down to that she’s not a real Lefty telling you she’s a righty Norm way so maybe it doesn’t feel as natural that’s been a thema the last few days there’s quite a few players now who playing with the other hand I just can’t imagine it I’m so left-handed you are aren’t you I saw it when we were having lunch today the fork was in the right hand oh no I go fork in the left bsy you do I go fork in the left so you’re not a real Lefty oh am I not a real righty I’m confused [Applause] four5 just looking to steady the ship here [Music] 14 1 [Applause] ah fantastic Canada two bites at the Cherry should have put the first one away but didn’t get punished for it and order is restored as far as Team Canada is concerned as they take a five to [Applause] lead they’ve done well there because with this format SU uses the score lines can change so quickly all of a sudden you’ve gone a breaker you use it 2 minutes later and back foot so kind of just just stay steady I don’t want to see my room it’s not your bathroom jeez oh [Music] jeez if you have an empty bottle then you can start spitting it out in the bottle you [Music] that very handy doubles player was Captain chesda the one ttle to is credit was back in 2017 and Leon memory [Music] serves so new balls serving to stay in this opening set is’s seal and team ch you joining us for the first time today a warm welcome 15 from the United cup here in Sydney Lea Fernandez the straight set win over the lady that is serving now Daniela Seagal 6263 Steven Diaz and Nicholas Jerry locked horn in the men’s singles Jerry winning that one in straights 7564 to the to CH so on is even this will be the decid there’s aniko not playing in the mix doues a new member of the top 20 as far as men’s singles is concerned what a standout year he had winning two titles stack a little bit closer to the Nets 3 15 and you can see Taz telling himself the same thing he could have potentially crossed one ball earlier when Fernandez hit a really great deep crosscourt backand that’s [Applause] clever I love how calm Fernandez is despite everything that’s going on in front of her with Diaz great peripheral vision choosing the right shot it’s everywhere it’s incredible uh the footwork of uh Steven yes that’s for sure and the determination as well you sitting Courtside and you would hear it up uh there as well you can just hear the noise he makes with those little steps he takes there so much intensity I wish I had his footwork it’s a dream footwork has brought a few set points here [Applause] well you still have to watch the ball so one set point has been snuffed out on this deciding Point sure barus Vera is going to look for that return now we’ll see how evolved he gets yeah remember woman Toom in the mixed oh yep it’s a Well time move tattooed the volley to the shoe of Diaz certainly now just a little bit more additional pressure on the server as Steven Diaz steps up to the line to try and serve out the set and it’s it’s always I guess it’s made tougher by the fact that you’ve already just had two set points in the previous game certainly was for me Laura what about you did it not bother you not so much in doubles no just at all sometimes Double’s not as much singles more yeah singles definitely more mhm [Music] cuz you’ve got this sounding go on the same side of the net so if something’s not gone well on those set points or if you could have done something different you just talk it out blame them try it again yeah sorry it was your fault what can I do just help me out right now to hold serve good start here L service yeah just left it too open that’s the danger with Fernandez cuz she gets quite close to the net but she doesn’t have the same Wings [Applause] span where should that volley have gone then back crosscourt short crosscourt and then at least if he gets to it it has to go up over the net 3 15 I like the intent from Fernandez even though she got beaten the previous point still looking to cross and poach on this one I think ultimately that’s what helped them win the point just catching the yine of her opponent ah one of the best points of the match so far all four involved beautiful combination of quick hands touch power well this is a really big Point here for the Canadian [Applause] team 14 13 it’s almost danela has been undone by the lack of pace on that first Ser was just 143 km an hour from di she was so early on the swing get the feeling she was expecting more third set point [Applause] she knew it was coming deciding [Applause] points he going to stick with the serve out wide what do you think guys I’d go bod so then at least he doesn’t have too much of an angle on the return any particular side on the body body for or back hand if you’re going to try trap him in the back hand I think forehand you can sometimes go off [Music] forehand what a comeback team Chile very much in the fight now they fight off four set points and we’re back on serve at 5-4 in the opening s has the reaction from Jerry on the bench he’s in every [Music] [Applause] point grip tip and rip [Music] tip and that’s mix doubles the momentum can change so quickly and this deciding points they are nerve-wracking when you’re out there Fernandez did a great job on the first volley knew it was coming at it but then three in a row you just can’t block it quick [Applause] [Applause] enough well they looking a little D and subdued about 20 minutes ago but anything but now down 52 of course they were down four love at one stage sigal and baros [Music] Vera maybe it it’ll be easy to break for the set rather than hold let’s see how this 10th service game shakes out and because Chile have gone line a couple of times on Diaz he’s now all of a sudden holding it not being quite so ambitious at net which is really the best part of their partnership three four games ago it’s completely different body language as well [Applause] now they look so much more confident they can see it that they could win this first set they’re in this match mixing things up nicely behind his first serve took a lot of pace off of that first delivery 4 15 you know what’s going to happen here right sudden death juice 4 good chance that’s what I’m thinking all of a sudden 40 love looks like they’re very much back in the set now the belief turned into hope yeah I hope I’m going to win my surf and that’s not good he still thinking like that no can do they are not going away without a fight seal and baros Vera even things up after 10 games what a great fight back [Music] I thought we would be midway through a second set about 20 minutes ago the way things were going but some good re guard [Music] action that’s what Diaz needs to get back to getting it that first Crossing before Chile can even think about gang line he’s definitely a little bit less active now at the net 13 [Applause] up fora [Applause] oh 4 [Applause] 15 Freddy Fon on the right and Hugo gravil who will be traveling with Felix this year of course was with SAS ver for many seasons as his physio traveling physio fulltime given the injuries that F has [Applause] had that is some heavy artillery heavy AR what do you think I feel if Diaz goes he’s got to commit there’s a little bit too much of back and forth at times because then it’s uncomfortable for Fernandez cuz she’s trying to defend from a difficult spot at the Baseline I was just as you were saying that I was just trying to watch where seigal’s F crosscourt landed it was right near the sideline I mean he’s tried to make the cross but I think the quality of the strike was just too [Music] good that’s very good incredible ball striking out there from all of them at the moment we have another deciding Point deciding points I’m nous watching what an acute angle bruising angles and egos with shots like that haime has [Applause] delighted could he prove to be Captain [Music] Fantastic [Applause] thanks for coming Diaz using every inch of his 5’7 frame to make that fley Canada need a death they lead [Applause] [Music] 65 Rock Solid from Fernandez in the forehand line rally held a nerve she could sense that both of the guys at the net were looking for the first [Music] volley it really is tough to get by the net person and trying to beat them with the crosscourt pass cuz of course they can move forward and just cut off the angle can understand why Canadians are so [Music] happy are pretty close to getting away from them here in this opening s [Applause] all right guys first point huh let’s go let’s go stay on top of [Music] [Applause] these good L come on come on let’s go two very beautiful countries so Chile and Canada almost opposite ends of the Planet Natural Beauty in in or Hemisphere and of course Tira Del fer down in the south of Chile is spectacular L service the land of Fire and Ice [Music] love [Applause] 15 oh [Applause] 5 let into this back and got some nice momentum him on it and then immediately you can see her partner choosing before Diaz even hits the ball to commit to the cross at the net 183 it’s all about the timing of the move it is isn’t it got to move when uh your opponent has the wet uh the the ball right on the wet you do it a little bit too soon then you’re in trouble sa P all this hard work may come to not more set points for Team Canada lovely from Lea Canada as you like a backand of Rich quality to close out the opening set they took a detour but they got to the desired destination they’ve won it 75 some Brave tennis that got him the break for the set herandez with that last shot but Diaz again Super Active at [Music] net could have easily gotten away from them ter of the numbers both players really high on the first Ser percentage which is exactly what you want in a mix doubles Canada just slightly ahead with that first serve points one what they’re able to do off the third ball really you look at how many break points they had only converted three out of seven it could have been a totally different score line in that [Applause] set yeah initially it was Steven Diaz dominating at the net for Team Canada Lela setting him up beautifully she was the one who was creating all the assists and I think fittingly that she closes out the opening set because her ground stroking was beautiful and beckan in particular forged in steel yeah I think overall they were just uh more creative out there doing a lot more at the net playing down the [Music] [Applause] lineer we wonder if Felix orasim if we will see him compete in the next couple of days oh his knee is not ready yet terrible way to start the year isn’t it yeah it really is Bubsy it did seem like he was quite a late withdrawal there Robbie yeah you’re right so hopefully that’s good news and that he was hoping to play and just wasn’t quite there because he had a decent start to the year and and then of course he went through that bad spell between Miami and Shanghai I think he won only one of 10 matches but by the time the indoor season rolled ground he was able to defend his title and ble that was one heck of an effort so actually finished the year some decent results given how poor the middle of it was and of course he was fighting all the knee issues yeah I meanit it hit it noral like the other side getting up with second six as best as possible yeah Team Canada to serve as fast as possible to surve okay looks like uh bo on the bench thought that he was holding back a little bit whenever he served to sigal set number two underway love [Music] [Applause] 15 here I’m here I’m here [Applause] and taking some lessons out of the opening set especially the early stages of it making some aggressive plays some good crosses [Applause] love so after going follow down in the opening set this would be the perfect start for team Chile in the second three break points [Applause] 15 go buddy Ki fol captain of Team Chile of course Nico’s grandfather niik Jerry very nice first second captain haime will be delighted with the start to the second set I have to think they didn’t do much wrong once they started to turn around that first set quickly things could have changed for them after handful of sudden death juices [Applause] a little bit of a hesitant start though from uh Diaz in his service game this aggressive not just with his footwork but also with his [Applause] swings got to commit in doubles makes doubles with your shots otherwise the net play is all over it been shaking his legs a few times as well it’s a busy day for him so with the early break baros L service I love [Music] [Applause] [Applause] 15 it’s frustrating as the net player sometimes when you know with full certainty that it’s coming directly at you from the baseliner but you just can’t get your hands ready quick [Applause] enough up it’s wonderful controlled aggression measuring his shots 3 to the nth degree over playing that one prepared for the two shot [Applause] combination [Applause] exactly the start that they would have wanted there’s no better feeling when you got the momentum working in your favor the court looks so big on the other side Gap so easy to find [Applause] 43 oh that’s not coming back again this time he really committed deing this return okay suddenly things got a little complicated deciding point oh she’s too heavy handed oh she was right there didn’t need to be such a deep volley just cross in into that gap between the two opponents would have been ideal sometimes she takes a big swing doesn’t she on her forehand volley especially yeah good spot Bubsy L [Applause] 15 [Applause] love 30 B here you go yeah after the opening seven games of this match things have become real Topsy Turvy many momentum shifts what do you think from court side should she been maybe half a step further up to play that volley definitely I think in doubles it’s so important to just have that quick transition to the net to be as close as possible once again you know I think uh with uh danela she just needs to have shorter take backs on the volleys they have more control then let’s [Applause] 30 oh we were discussing it earlier in the match it’s a motion that’s a little disjointed she kind of looks down the eyes aren’t quite looking forward as she makes contact with the ball for me she could clean that up a little because then she’d be able to get some extra power and also get some extra slice really use that leftin it doesn’t really seem a a weapon at the moment for Lea her surf yeah the rotation of the shoulders is such a power move for the Ser actually there’s a Canadian that Springs to mind that does it so beautifully Milos rage just to see him make that nice shoulder turn right before he delivers his big blow and what a simple motion it is he’s also double the height bit unfair can tell you what it’s a tough team I’m commentating with I’m going to have to up my analysis game here I’d have to think of a better comparison the Canadians Saw Set 21 to the good I’m going to steer you towards the rinky hij jakata there you go there someone’s got a great serve for someone who’s small and it can provide some fireworks with it speaking of which we’re going to see plenty of those this evening pyate Technics Galore lighting up the Australian scars here in Sydney it is one of the great places on the planet to be as we usher in a new [Music] year you could already feel the energy of around the city this morning so many tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of those [Music] [Music] tonight I feel like ni jarry’s become team captain over the last 40 minutes or soing most of the talking at the change J [Music] [Music] [Music] we saw this beautiful shots of the Harbor Bridge if you would Hazard a guess I’m going to start with you Laura as to how much they spend on New Year’s fireworks in Sydney what is your number Bubsy I’m going to come to you after Laura’s given her number don’t I’m I’m getting 10 mil 10 mil are you going under or over Bubsy well I I think it’s over to be honest it feels bit unfair that I had to pick a number and just go under over yeah well sometimes you know you’ll be [Laughter] I’m sure Robie will come up with another question where he asks me first okay how many tennis balls are going to be used during the United cup for example that’s a good one we’ll use that we need to find out the number first we’ll ask Robbie misfiring I can tell you the annual budget for the New Year’s fireworks in Sydney is around 7 million oo 7 million Australian dollars Big Win For Me Yeah I think they pulled back this year yeah around 8 tons of fireworks of course it takes them a couple of days to set it all up they’ve been doing that great pick up from Diaz wasn’t enough [Applause] Z he might be a big yard with plenty of far power but he’s got some diff touch too that’s not the first time that Diaz and Fernandez have had a bit of a miscommunication of who’s going to take the forehand through the Middle with there being a lefty involved she wants it bad but might not have been the right choice there let the service [Music] [Applause] two games set number two much better contest in the opening couple of games of set number one when the Canadians had a fall love lead at this point the tie scores one a piece just to reiterate and remind Lea Fernandez winning the lady singles in The Opening match and Nicholas Jerry beating Steven Diaz in the men’s singles love [Applause] [Applause] 15 oh I think he’s made it he’s going to take the plaudit but his partner’s done all the work Laura he’s got the glory [Applause] yes he in trouble again surf I need to Cle check but I don’t believe that we’ve had a match tie break yet in a deciding mixed doubl so far this United cup M could this be the first today we’re Fair Way off that but I feel like Chile just has so much momentum and again 14 for [Applause] spe 15 14 [Applause] time Steven Diaz once again proving the weakest link especially on his serf the upshot of that is that team Chile I’ve got a 3-2 lead with a break in set number two it’s really interesting this uh the first five games or six games he was uh the player of the match and now he’s really the one who’s hesitating a little bit who’s unsure uncertain out there you can see it in his face there’s a lot of eye contact with the players box with the team yeah I’m never a fan in any sport when they choose the nvp before the match is done always got to wait right just in case couple of balls here and there but make sure that that she’s hitting those balls right make sure she he started overthinking as soon as he got pass down the line two or three times just amount of doubt in his mind but it’s enough if you you want to be the first player being active at the net in a takes that away from you very [Applause] difficult [Applause] time [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 15 left [Applause] 5 [Applause] know F 153 what the four cross score I should say for cross I just say in the Cross Court railings it’s the woman that are out gunning the guys at the moment showing more consistency that was more definitive in the decision making there Rober 15 14 he sprinted up to that one he yelled at me so it was [Applause] clear break points Gore in the second set 34 yeah that’s using your 6’3 frame to good effect to exploit the angle out wide and now Diaz with this score line is going to have two break points in a row so does he just try and rip the first one deciding point at the right shot too early actually they’re playing two at the back no rush to go [Applause] line oh what deciding Point Laura what a smart surf though body forehand a little bit of hesitation again from uh yes and there it is yeah that’ll give the Chalan a bit of breathing room at 4-2 in the second set it’s the slow kicker you’re are able to get the spin on it it bites more when the ball is going slower through the air and that’s what we saw nice deviation off the [Music] turf [Applause] nice makes it look so easy toughest thing to do with the ground stroke change direction from the crosscourt to the down the line almost took a head off [Applause] I wonder if the ball touched her hair there I mean it was a famous incident I think it was at the the French or the US Open back in the day with Ken Flack and Robert sauso remember Ken Flack in his long hair I can’t say I do do you remember him Bubsy I I do yes I do I can see it happen but sometimes you don’t really feel that as well I mean if a ball touches your hair how can you feel it oh it does I’m telling you I saw something there tou does it count if it’s the ponytail well it’s part of your body isn’t it interesting better cut our hair oh it hands and yellow seal all over the [Applause] net the [Applause] opp go we go easy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 346 sudden death [Applause] J Marin so fine [Music] Team Canada p hold Team Canada are still pointing to Harbor Ambitions of getting the one done in Straits they playing catch up it’s 4-3 to the Chileans so let’s have a closer look at this hair incident let’s see if we can spot anything here ladies he catches it late tough angle and no I’ve changed my mind I think she’s turning and it’s gone there could be one little hair sticking out you know touching the ball yeah we would need uh certainly a lot more of the camera angles can we get the snicko on that and should never feel it either so you can’t really be honest and say oh it hit me we need the hair we need to invent the hair camera Y and that’s exactly what Ken flx said course his big incident was in the the US Open men’s doubles finals in fact they were playing lont and Noah and it was in the pivotal third set that’s when the Dub’s finals used to be three out of five one set all tiebreaker lonto nowhere up 64 and he swung at a volley and Ken just tried to get out the way and they swore that it touched his hair of course he denied it and then uh the French just got so angry because he didn’t call it upon himself and then tanked the fourth set in the farmers of the US Open imtion that six love incredible what a story I have to look it up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah [Music] was a real chance I actually thought that he touched the ball again with his body before but it was all going so fast see that was not necessary he moved backwards instead of forwards [Applause] oh where’s that Pat rafter Top Spin for and volley when you need it yes somewhere in Byron [Applause] Bay go almost did it good good job good job they’re certainly going for each other now all of [Applause] them way Thomas kept his eye on the ball even though it looked like Diaz might hit him he still was watching leads five to three that’s a stronghold niik Cherry’s happy why [Applause] not the one out Sage isi fol team capson very happy with proceedings 77 years of age don’t leave him hanging now DF serving and he’s had trouble all set on his own [Music] gamesv 15 left oh that will hurt ball 5 Meats skin that could be a bruise that one y skin stings of course you can’t wipe it you want to show that you’re cool and you can handle the body shot but it does hurt I can promise you that much but it happens in doubles and mix doesn’t it yep CH got another one yeah they’re really the Chileans they’re really going for it now I you have to yeah deciding doubles trying to get to a set all and as the net player you would be expecting it 14 [Applause] 15 play STV 43 how much has she improved since this match has been on court firing Out full hands here go so nice when you see a player com to their ear during a match now they have been a dynamic Joo in the second set they have complimented one another [Applause] beautifully set point good look at that he has not missed to many back hands in the net normally so good at getting the net clearance that’s what she does it’s 54 whoever wins this doesn’t get any easier because Greece is the third team in group b who would you put your money on now you two up there so even isn’t it yeah I’m probably going to go with the team that has red in their flag Bubsy of course what about you Laura I always think a match tie break can go either way it’s a bit of a lottery isn’t it where you get a couple free points off your serve all of a sudden you’ve got a mini break and just trying to hold on to the momentum so if there’s a team that’s done a little better off serve in this set it would probably be the Chileans but anything can happen I tell you what I’m going to make the core bus in I’m going to say that if it does indeed go to a 10-point match to breaker Lea Fernandez is going to be the Difference Maker on the court because she has the most experience no I just think she’s going to come up with something that will compliment her partner better than seigal for her to do that when she’s getting peppered at the moment exactly at the moment she’s the target isn’t she yes but we’re not in a match tiebreaker yet right no we’re not okay just checking okay we’ll get back to you when that happens I don’t he you going out on a [Music] Lim tell you what tough love out there on the match called tough love here in the commentary box for you know who well we’re just you know trying to keep you on your toes oh [Applause] yeah he is the coolest customer in the house is Jack of Chile thoroughly enjoying this contest as his team tries to take us to the first deciding match tie break she didn’t move her feet there Lea Fernandez too far away such a good placement from varus Vera left and just watch her how she moves towards the ball this time so much easy to put it away when you have that forward motion especially at the net what a service game this has [Applause] been serving has been [Applause] intelligent ground stroking has been explosive now a whole host of set points for team Chile [Applause] jom that’s the way to shut the gates on set number two and we are indeed Going the Distance here as Chile take on Canada for all the marbles and a 10-point match tie break to [Applause] follow flag down that player has left the court for a bathroom break Daniel seal interesting our first match tie break in a deciding mixed double was this year at the United cup I’ve got no idea which way this is going to go well I think Robbie has a bit of an idea oh you’re Tipp in Canada I am Qui look at the set two summary Laura what numbers jump out you well the immediate one is the Improvement on the first serve and the first of points one from Chile just a little bit better you look at how many sudden death juice games we’re in that second set it’s another set that really could have gone either way and um they just took advantage of the bigger points I think they were a bit braver when they needed to be and to be honest they started peppering Fernandez at the net which helps because she she then wasn’t so active Diaz is then trying to cover more from the Baseline and it just spirals a bit but it doesn’t take much the [Applause] Pumped yeah there’s so much more belief there now isn’t it the way they’ve been uh playing from middle from the middle of the first set onwards and until now is incredible so much more aggressive so much more certain in their shots and now it’s a matter of keeping that momentum going it might sound silly but the first couple of uh points they so crucial the tie [Applause] break first her percentage crucial in the tie break and to find that right combination of being aggressive but not risking too much as well MRE Team Canada to [Applause] serve oh this guy is lighting it up he is really coming to his own I think ner in the opening four games but have a look at the S I mean two shots from the Baseline didn’t make it over the te so go back a conversation on depth doesn’t it mhm you want it now what a point di is trying to be everywhere on the court herandez did well to just cover him from the back that’s a big call they’re calling him Stevie [Applause] G what did he say Stevie D he’s got the right color shirt on if he was called Stevie G one a piece [Music] nice solid she was just holding that line 2 one doubles it’s a 10-point match tie break that decides the outcome of it first her 10 by a margin of two Daniela seal simple but effective with Ed [Applause] volley [Music] oh bit of movement at the net from seal 31 Tim [Music] chill is that off ping bobsy getting miked up but uh yeah I was just thinking of Robbie what he said before about Lea Fernandez what oh this is not [Applause] over far from it that’s kind of the beauty of the first of 10 tie break you can feel like you have some momentum be a mini break maybe even two up but you’re still a long way off the finish [Applause] line oh once again Lea Fernandez providing the assist to make Steven Diaz look great at n she sure did helped out slightly by vario Farah who committed them you know you see anyone turning around like that the net just left a bit of an opening for Diaz to sneak into still haven’t heard Bubsy or Laura pick a winner in this okay we’ve had six points played in this match TI breaker Bubsy who you going for oh it’s tough one really really tough well if you go for Canada if you think Canada is going to have to go against you I guess right it don’t have to no no no I think I I think Canada has the edge too okay what about you Laura I’m going Chile okay there you just to be different yeah always likes a bit of South American drama does war three a [Music] piece she was worried about hitting deers in the back of the head [Applause] there this is a good angle just caught it slightly late late as well didn’t she as she hit it ver did a good job just looking across just caught the a line of Fernandez oh she was ready tremendous be ready he’s ready that’s all they’re telling you from the side too yeah you can hear it nice and clearly from adal shanon team captain of Canada be ready be ready he’s saying oh Lea absolutely fantastic from Fernandez oh you’re happy with that that’s a big time B committed early great feel she should get two points for that that reaction from [Music] Diaz Big Time play on a big time points and he knows it [Music] it’s not about hitting the ball hard to the net player it’s about getting it to the feet and that’s what Lea did Team Canada go guys next one next one and how often is low and slow taou she was Rock Solid think one more Cross Court there didn’t feel like the right ball to open it line she’s forced into that because she wasn’t around the ball enough with you Laura take the chance of going a little Central and crosscourt Danel poach is too good such low percentage shot trying to take that one up the [Music] line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what a point both teams bringing it when it matters most he was wondering who’s going to be the first one to cross here which wasn’t easy because uh the groundstroke rallies from the girls were amazing and have a listen to the atmosphere in here now it’s all even Diaz wanted to be first how many times did he try and cross in that rally Fernandez did well to work around him as he was running back and forth Chan fans really adding to the atmosphere absolutely nothing to choose between these two [Applause] teams in these team competitions the mix dou was always so popular with the fans and especially when it’s the deciding rubber Frozen rope of a backand 76 chil great use of that left hand to drive around the side of the ball to pull it back down the line beautiful contrast of emotions there the joy of the Chileans the Heartbreak of the Canadians after being 64 up they’re now 76 down [Applause] no he’s missed it8 six K and this is what sport is the best form of reality TV because there are no scripts here folks it was the right [Applause] Ball Four Points in a row for team Chile oh Grace Fernandez hitting it from the Baseline finding angle after angle te [Applause] [Music] [Applause] chil such an intelligent beforehand wasn’t it knowing that baros Vera wanted a dominate the middle of the Court Stitch she pulls him [Applause] [Music] wide oh get out of here she said do it again come for me again he well she is so ready now Lea Fernandez isn’t she incredible rallies we’re witnessing out there right now I’m I’m actually so nervous I don’t know how you guys are feeling balanced on the width of an atom this one eight all the coolest player on the court right now can going to hit the smash as did eight all you’re going for the slow steady slice one match sure one set all in the mix and finally a match point for Team [Music] Canada they’ve done it Canada go top of Group B and they go the distance they Prevail 108 in the match tiebreaker in the mixed doubles to get the job done what a thrilling tie that was that was such an enjoyable match and the intention from both teams in the tie break my goodness there were some nerves and how solid was Lea Fernandez point after Point she brought the team back into [Music] it started as Diaz’s MVP in the first set what you got to give it to Lela after the tie break J so close yeah so far they did everything right HS Smiles all around at tell you what this sport will put you through the ringer so much tougher being on the bench Isn’t It Felix went through every single emotion in the book in the last 20 minutes or so he was heading hands then he was up on his feet and then he was back heading hands two seconds later and how good does it feel to get that first win under your belt and as a result of winning the mixed they will do will indeed go top of Group B here in Sydney and this is how they did it there is no better feeling if you could bottle it and sell it you’d be a very wealthy individual and doing it with somebody and doing it for your country [Applause] can’t beat that feeling just soaking it all in for a [Music] moment I almost can’t believe they came through that one I sometimes in these team events you see emotions after ones that you don’t even see it in in individual events when they’re playing tournaments cuz the ability to share it with people and of course the disappointment at least in the team environment is shaped makes it harder though because you’re you’re wanting to win for more than just you and now fif point it’s more pressure some people enjoy it Fernandez clearly does and those fans we hope will be back for more seal give a good account of herself did really well in that second set but in the end it was the Canadians were able to find that X Factor when it mattered most the maple leaf is flying high I can tell you down courts side is Barbara shett with the winners let’s see from them well Lea Steve what should I say I’ve got a few more gray hair watching this match that’s for sure about 2 minutes ago it was 8 all in the deciding tiebreaker and now you’ve just won this tie this deciding mix doubles how are you feeling Leila I’m extremely happy and extremely proud of our team uh you know it was a nerve-wracking doubles match there’s a lot of ups and downs but you know I think I was extremely proud of the way that we stayed calm stayed cool and then just use the the positivity to our to our advantage yeah at the beginning of the match I thought I mean you were the player of this mix doubles it was unbelievable you were all over the place uh you were moving so well and then you just dropped it a little bit what happened were you getting a bit tired or carried away um I’ll be 33 next year oh that explains it so yeah um yeah I started really pumped I was a little bit surprised that Felix um wasn’t going on court so so um I think it was about time I could pay back Felix for a 2021 um winning the ATP cup so yeah I was really pumped and really motivated but then my legs my legs start to feel heavy tired but yeah we kept it together the whole time we were four love up and it was 5 all and luckily we stayed with a great attitude and we stayed positive as she said and yeah and then the second set was there’s a few um no add points that we didn’t win so it could have gone both ways and the Super T bre I think it was it was really fun and really it was really really fun and great Now Lea after your singles win uh I tried to ask you what are your plans for tonight for you New Year here he said no I have to stay focused I’m still playing uh the mix doubles later on and what are your plans tonight I mean this is a perfect way to celebrate right this win and New Year’s yeah know it’s it’s a perfect way to celebrate um you know we get to to celebrate as a team uh with this win and hopefully we get to see some fireworks hopefully we’re not too tired after this time but you know I think it’s going to be fun uh walking around the the city a little bit uh explore and then the fireworks is going to be special do you have enough energy left uh to party tonight maybe she could do the walking around I’ll try I’ll try well done guys we can’t wait to see you in a couple of days have a new year thank you happy New [Music] Year understandable that can’t what that smile off their faces and what a lovely way to close out the new year and I shut in another one it doesn’t get any easier they play grece next so uh tough already even tougher in a couple of days when they come back but they can ride this highe for the moment and Fernandez really in particular deserves to just soak this up after what she was able to deliver today for her team here’s what Bubsy was talking about you can see her writing with her her right [Applause] hand plays with her left s Rafael Nadal B anything in it with the numbers really you look at that break points one totally even four out of 11 for each team seven out of 11 for each team service games one and just shows how the Sund death juices the super tie breaks it’s a bit of a lottery at times but we love it that was a great mix ups match thanks so much Lauren just a a quick recap of how things unfolded today of course it was Lea Fernandez that got the Canadians off to a perfect start against danela seal beating on straight sets and niik Jerry bouncing back with considerable upom for the Chans to even up the tie and after the first four games he thought it was going to be a whitewash in the mix with Team Canada going up 4-0 eventually they won at 75 beautiful comeback from the Chileans winning the second and of course that deciding set match tiebreaker that we have just seen was box office Gold Team Canada are the winners of the first match to be played in group b we hope you enjoyed our coverage today and of course uh we wish you the best of the New Year and may 2024 be an absolute cracker from Laura Robson and myself we say goodbye for now [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah

Fernandez playing against her father's team…. and defeating them! 😊
Anyway, Leylah is not the same Leylah now since her maiden runner-up finish in the US Open years ago…. Fernandez had improved a lot by leaps and bounds…. Attagirl, Kabayan! 🎾
