hey guys this Michael welcome back to scratch Golf Academy today I’m going to talk about how to stop hitting behind the golf ball the dreaded trunk that so many of you guys seem to struggle with and honestly me sometimes as well but I’m going to show you a drill that’s going to really allow you to feel that Tor level contact that ball first Contact compress the ball and it’s going to really help you out so first let’s talk about why we chunk the ball so I’m sure I don’t need to demonstrate but as you guys know chunk looks something like this where we hit way behind the golf ball and we take a big deep divot it doesn’t seem to go straight at all usually when I see what happens is when people chunk is they take the club back here they’re throwing their arms down and they’re leaning back and take a look how the club bottoms out really quickly when you do that we’re here the weight stays back we lean back like this our hip fires out like that now we throw the hands out and we hit the ground behind the ball like that there’s like nothing you can do to prevent that and it’s pretty frustrating but let’s talk about a drill and and how to start making some great contact so obviously an ideal shot looks something like this where we hit the ball first we make a divot after the ball and it goes the yardage you expect it to go so let’s talk about a drill it’s going to have to do with sequencing and body positioning in your swing so I’m going to I’m going to demonstrate for you guys right here and then I’m going to hit some shots with with it as well so the way it’s going to work is you’re going to start with your feet together like this feet together as you take the club back you’re going to step your front foot forward something like this at the same time like this and now you’re loaded in a great position and you can come on through so the way it’s going to look is something like this feet together back through now what happens is all of our weight now is on this front leg we’re not leaning back at all we’re getting to our front side right we’re preventing the dip of the shoulder slaming the club into the ground one more time here feet together now it’s going to help with the sequencing right so we go at the same time forward and through and now you can do it and hit and hit a ball as well it just takes a little uh finagling in terms of where to set up cuz you are moving forward but from this angle it looks something like this forward through really feel that weight shift to your front side like this so I recommend starting with the ball a little bit in front of your front foot when your feet are together okay you’re going to set up straight away step through and that is a very pure golf shot right there I’ll show you one more time what you should think about is keeping that chest down not sliding that hip out in front of you because you can still do this drill and slide that hip and drop the club right so we want to stand tall down and through through okay same exact feeling one more so we start with that ball out in front of us like that step through really great drill to time up your swing and then also get that club to bottom out at the right spot give that a try make sure to subscribe to scratch golf um some great tips from a bunch of great coaches of us on here check out my stuff over on that golf grind my practice plan is also listed in the link below so check that out and I’ll see you guys out here real soon [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. Great drill. Just set up to the ball as normal, then bring your left foot to your right. You’re ready to start the drill, with ball position in the correct spot.

  2. Why not just leave the 75% of the weight on the front leg, rather than taking the step, while taking the backswing and then move into the downswing as you demonstrated? More like a "Stack & Tilt!"
