guys welcome back to day 15 today I’m going to show you guys how technology has changed golf right here I have a ponwood and right here I have a brand new tailor made Qi 10 which I am gaming and I’m going to hit everything in between and show you guys how much this game has changed let’s get right into it [Music] so as you can see we have almost 10 drivers here pmen is this is a really really old driver okay this is completely wood there’s a little bit of metal on it and one thing that I think is really crazy is as you see these things progress the heads are slowly starting to get bigger and bigger and bigger every single one of these is a driver it’s a onewood which is a driver and then you get all the way to the gamer which is a very big very forgiving head there’s lots of different shapes and I think as technology was progressing they were starting to do things like this where they’re trying to create speed slots and this is a this is actually a graphite head with a little bit of metal on the bottom so just very interesting to see how technology is progressing and to know that people were winning golf tournaments on the PGA tour with clubs like this it just makes me wonder how good they would be if they had technology like this maybe there’s not that big of a difference I don’t know but we’re going to find out today so we’re going to start out with the pmen um I believe that this driver right here was pretty common in the late 1970s and I believe in the early 1980s is when they kind of switched over to metal heads I think tailor was actually the first company to put out a full metal head in a driver so cool fact there I think that’s think that’s real by a little Google research that I did but here we go I’m going to hit like five D with each and I’m going to hit a couple really hard with each to see kind of what Max is look at some Spin and everything I have no clue where this is going to go nice little baby draw there first one right out the gate 160 ball speed 4,000 spin dang 270 total right down the middle is pretty good I feel like this is a very hook biased draw what the hell did you just say I just said hook bias DW all right there’s two with a pmen that one’s a little bit faster face was closed so I know that I can really I don’t think this thing is going to slice so I can really just hit it out there to the right oh that was smashed I feel like 250 carry is like the kind of the max I’m getting out of this I’ve hit it I’ve hit it really dead center of the face every single time ball speed the highest has been 164 ooh 270 161 spins High 3,000 is really high spin obviously but I mean my gosh this thing is consistent I’m going to hit these last two really hard this thing is it’s been very consistent I think it’s probably carried within 10 yards every single time I’m going to hit this hard see if I can blow this thing up holy crap 166 ball speed 284 total harder I swing the spin actually doesn’t jump up that much the spin is pretty consistent one more here blow this thing up swing through it that was low on the face got it to go right but all right so that’s the pmen right there this is the oldest driver that I have um it actually held together really nicely probably a at least a 40-year-old club and I don’t think they were swinging it at 165 ball speed back in the day so Props to this guy for holding up and uh whoever got to hit it before me all right so right here we have the um adx eonic 100 we believe this driver is kind of mid to late 80s from some research that we did but it is it does say it’s a graphite aerodynamic graphite head for maximum distance so nice big face we’re going to see how forgiving it is looks like people have hit it in the center so this one feels better it’s it it actually feels really good holy smoked that was hammered that was awesome 169 ball speed I couldn’t get that other one above 166 and here we are just a little bit later and we jumped up a couple miles an hour that was hammered wow I’m impressed with this this one has a more normal length of shaft oh my gosh this actually this is legit 160 I haven’t got it above 170 yet but this is really really neat feels good too it’s like it’s stable here we go one more regular and then I’m going to hit it hard for the last two okay maybe under some speed this one has a little bit more rotation in the face just because I don’t know what stiffness is Sha is but here we go I’m going to hit this one hard Now launch angle is good for a driver 286 carry I feel like the one thing that I’m seeing with this so these driver older drivers so far is when you hit them harder the spin jumps up which is common with any driver but yeah 173 see if we can get to 175 here 170 yeah all right so so that is the yanx adx1 100 I want to look at the total carry on that real quick and then we’re going to move on to actually the first metal driver pmen average carry of 254 and then we’re jumping up to the next driver that I have is that’s almost 30 yards that’s a lot but we’re going to keep going first on to the first metal driver all right so we’re on to the image this is the first metal driver it’s fully metal and uh this is probably early 90 this is probably actually yeah really late ‘ 80s again early ’90s um when they started making driver uh driver heads out of metal so here we go that was a really good one 167 ball speed right out right out the [Music] gate that dang that was a long one that was a really good drive there image one baby wow 272 carry 292 total just just right down the middle here we go couple more with this one first metal driver I mean I am just loving the feel of this thing little low on the face there m hit still goes dead straight 250 carry wow I popped that up and duck hooked it there is the zero forgiveness driver right there so I hit that one out on the toe and you can see just the ball speed dropped by 20 some odd miles an hour carry dropped a b a ton um couple more here you really have to hit these in the center of the face in order to maximize the efficiency of them here we go I’m going to hit these last two really hard [Music] dang 176 ball speed that’s me Swinging really hard which is probably around right now with this club probably like 125 one more here but that was a beautiful Drive hammered even though it kind of overdrew 175 ball speed I think that’s the highest one for this club um image one let’s see what the total k area on that is average that thing felt really nice wow look at that slowly creeping up so we had a big jump between the first two and then we had a little jump um a four yard jump between those so now I’m going to be moving onto a cobra King this is a TI titanium wood oversized 10.5° just a real classic looking driver there really neat how old school that looks it’s aerodynamic it has all these little folds in there I’m not sure how that helps it but we are about to see what this driver can do o this thing is really flexible this could be a good one here this is good looking driver 286 carry 309 3000 spin 171 I mean pretty pretty good golf shot [Music] there 278 or 275 171 ball speeds in the low 170s right now which is actually more than I was expecting for a driver of this age I mean this thing is probably older than I am that’s a hook there is one thing about this is you cannot miss the center of the face and if you do you are getting punished when I swing hard it just spins 172 ball speed this is kind of hanging out this one I feel like maybe not that much of a difference I feel like the other one probably was holding with this one all right I’m going to hit one really hard with this and see what [Music] happens 174 I can’t seem to get over that 174 175 Mark that one ah really not that impressed honestly not much of a difference there look at the average I feel like it might be just even even less oh it’s same it’s almost the same yeah 280 all right we have hit um we’re kind of making our way through the metal drivers and as you can tell the heads are starting to get bigger and this actually looks like a more modern size driver head we got 12° of Loft this is a Tom select x101 TI I think that’s titanium so titanium head here with a ultimate low torque graphite 88 proflex shaft so we’re about to find out looks like it’s actually lady shaft all right so I definitely think it’s a lady shaft but um you can see much more modern head a lot bigger your face I even have to use a normal size te here so we’re about to see what happens here all right 279 carry 167 ball speed this is probably a much more forgiving driver but it does look May might be a little bit slower here 168 281 305 total spins not too bad ooh 291 total or carry 165 ball speed so it’s almost like the ball speed may have slowed down just a little bit but the obviously the carry has significantly jumped up there I think the biggest thing isn’t like that it’s not as Gable is that the the margin for error so much like smaller yeah with older clubes yeah exactly like with older clubs I was when you Mish hit them a little bit they’re like really far off line whereas I didn’t hit that last one great and it’s probably right side of the Fairway 170 ball speed 260 carry that definitely was unbelievable spinning I think this shaft is probably a little weak for me but let’s see what Tom has if I go after it I’m going to try to get this to 180 172 is all she got I mean great drive though all right let’s see the average right there I really don’t think we’re going to see a ton um that just didn’t love that driver to be honest average 280 it literally stayed the exact same all right moving on to I don’t even know what the heck this big franking orange is TI Matrix Innovation variable launch control 10.5° 460 CC driver don’t even know if this was made on the earth this could be built by aliens but we are about to see what happens here we may see more traditional ball speeds with this let me know if in the comments if you’ve ever hit this driver if it’s uh if anybody’s familiar with it also we are hitting the 2024 tailor made tp5x it’s a club longer than the previous year I’ve tested it you can go check it out but here we go [Music] I mean it was dead straight but that was not I was not expecting that 255 car surely this there’s got to be more than that in here yeah that’s better 172 4200 spin just crazy that’s like a fivewood [Music] now it’s just going it’s just I mean 172 ball speed carrying 260 like this thing got beat by a club twice as old as it I mean surely this is this this was like something where it was a commercial on TV where people were like oh buy this driver has 25 yards here did it game instantly then andbody bought it and realized it was a joke okay I mean it’s 178 ball speed 3,400 spin which this one necessarily haven’t hasn’t gone to Ay it just the spin is it just I don’t think it’s made for these type of speeds I want to break this driver I really do I don’t I dislike it that much here we go I’m going to break it okay that’s the highest ball speed we’ve seen this whole time 183 that was hammered all right I’m going to give it one more try because I want to Cave the face in on this actually the face is kind of going the wrong direction right now so I think I’ve already done my I’ve done my duty here holy SN how do you snap no look the phas I it actually I caved it in look can you see it yeah it’s going the other way probably hard to see on the camera but it actually is dipping in exactly what I want to do I broke a driver today I was trying to do that let’s see that let’s see the total carry on this thing it’s probably going to be a little higher but let’s see here oh my gosh it actually dropped 2 yards whatever the last one before we get to 2024 this right here Diablo Edge 9.5 de I would assume that I’m probably going to see some better drives out of this more probably in the this drivers is probably in the last 10 years um don’t know exactly but somebody in the comments can probably tell me so let’s get this thing fired up and see all right so here we are this will be cool I think that we probably we have had a total jump from in total carry from 254 when we started to [Music] 280 as we have progressed through the years of technology and now here we are second to last this is a very much more modern driver I’m excited to see like the spin and the numbers on this before I get to the QI 10 which you guys stick around for that because it’s going to be a thing to behold here we go yeah look at that much more conventional there 180 ball speed right out the gate this thing actually because of the reflective on the face it actually is enough to give me Club head speed even just like it’s so crazy to see how quickly technology has changed because right here we have pretty much probably not every driver but very similar to each kind of category of every couple years in the last like 45 to 50 years and just the way that this feels it’s so much more forgiving hitting that per driver it’s like the people that hit those and actually played on tour with them they had to be so freaking good to hit the center of the face every single time cuz like I said if you missed it at all like you’re losing 40 yards and it’s going really far left or right dang 130 Club head speed with this driver just insane 181 this thing goes left hard look at that 181 18 you can see it right there it’s always all over the place 18% off bad birdie apparel click the link in the top of the description use the code mic 18 one more with this I’m going to give it all I got and then it’s what you guys all came here to see okay the beautiful qi1 and all of its Glory here we go 185 310 310 car and I will tell you that club head speed is not correct 140 a’t right it’s just it’s getting Reflection from here and it’s it’s reading things 185 ball speed that’s the fastest we’ve seen 310 carry watch this average from just a couple drivers ago to then right now watch this 307 we just jumped 20 average of about 25 yards and now we’re going to the beautiful qi1 to finish this thing off another thing I want to recognize from this is obviously more modern-day style driver look at this once this club is built the shaft’s in there you can’t change it okay this driver I had this thing twisted and turned I have it built up in a way that suits my swing exactly and that’s another thing that you couldn’t do with any of these you know drivers probably even 10 12 15 years ago you didn’t have the adjustability that you do now I have the TPT 15 low shaft and I’m hitting the qi1 9° core model it literally has a sleeve you can adjust everything I have it a little bit towards lower it’s probably around 8 and a half let’s go let’s hit five or six drives here and we’re about to see a massive jump and everything I guarantee it 309 carry 334 total right out of the [Music] gate look at that 321 in the air 178 ball speed that’s that’s the optimization of this driver obviously it hit a little bit out on the toe so it kind of is a big draw but 321 in the air wow I just love this driver I just love this driver so much just right down the [Applause] gut just got a little bit left there now I’m going to go that’s like really stock swings I’m going to hit a couple really hard for you guys and uh just see how much we can get out of these new drivers [Music] 323 in the air with a perfect draw right back to the center line when I tried to swing harder with these earlier drivers the spin just jumped up so much and there is so much control in these heads now especially the QI 10 the core model has just been so [Music] good 185 ball speed 333 total I mean this thing just writes the story itself that’s right nope just I mean what more do I need to say let’s look at the average carry here as we rounded out with the QI 10 313 yards in the air and I kind of hit those the dispersion on those was pretty big um you can see that I had some kind of M hits in there I guess you could say and I still have an average carry of 313 yards so one other thing that I want to look at real quick is just total distance um and I’m just going to click over here to total distance and we’re going to be able to see so total distance on average we have pmen at 271 which is you know pretty good and then we slowly creep up and we go from a pan driver at 271 to my current gamer at a total average 340 yard that’s 30 plus 40 that is a 70 yard difference over the last 40 years I’m actually just kind of mindblown seeing this right now pretty much all of those driver swings was very similar I feel like I was really consistent with Club head speed so that right there is just a perfect picture of how technology has changed golf it has gotten unbelievably longer so it’s interesting to see these numbers and how I mean this is what the PGA Tour is looking at every single day of every single year as the game is progressing and it’s cool to see that’s a really fun video hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I did if you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet make sure you are doing that right now drop a comment let me know your thoughts on this and let me know your thoughts on how technology is going to affect golf in the next 50 years we’ll see you guys tomorrow love you all peace [Music]

  1. Love the intro 😅 but seriously nice video. It really makes you appreciate improvements made to metal and carbon fiber.

  2. TiMatrix is junk.. I think he paid about $75 for those all those clubs with the Cobra Ti being about $20 & Diablo $40.. surprised he didn't cave the face in more of them.
Being on TaylorMade staff, you'd think he could've gotten a Pittsburgh persimmon, System 2, Burner bubble, Firesole, 300 series, 580, R7, Rocketballz.. interesting video nonetheless

  3. Was hoping to see a Big Bertha, Burner and Sasquatch. I still rock the Nike Sasquatch.
    Great video.

  4. That wood driver was a Northwestern brand club. Not persimmon. Laminated maple likely. Northwestern was sold out of big box stores like Canadian Tire up here in Canada. in the 70s 80s. You should find a real good persimmon driver… that Northwestern, would be like a Walmart box set driver as far as quality goes. Nicklaus played MacGregor that would be a good place to start looking. Get something with a steel shaft too, for full effect.

  5. A better comparison would be putting the same shaft in all of them. Not sure if that’s possible, but it would decrease the variables.

  6. Very cool vid. Yonex and Cobra made great drivers in the 90s. You should consider doing a vid where you try different ball types from the past 30-40 years. Example: Wound balata ball, wound surlyn cover, 2 piece – 1 layer like the Spalding Tour Edition, Pro V1 thru the modern golf ball.

  7. You’re built for driver content. Good stuff. If you were able to pair the golf ball used at the time each of those clubs was released, you would see even greater variances in the technology.

No doubt the club tech is better (especially shaft). But THE BALL is a massive difference.

  8. Gives you semi idea how fast Nicklaus swung with that wooden head and 60s golf ball averaged close to 280 for a year

  9. I watched Greg Norman hitting persimmon drivers back in the late 70's in Australia, he was hitting them 300 – 320 yards consistently. No kidding it was a sight to see!!!! He truly is the best ever with a driver in his hands. Which is why he was number one for so long.

  10. So in the past 15 years (Diablo driver), there’s really a minuscule change. Especially considering none of those shafts were fit to you.

Basically, you can pick any driver off the shelf from the past 5-10 years and expect very similar results. Fortunately for companies, golfers are dumb. And every year so many buy into the longer, straighter, better hype. Rinse and repeat every season. Yet never seem to get any better.

  11. 499k so close, Let’s go bro! Loving this series, happy to see you open up about your frustrations and your new perspective on golf/competing. Keep it coming brotha! God bless!

  12. 70 yard difference and add another 30 at least for the ball improvements. I was a long hitter and tour caddie in the early 70’s and 250 was an enormous drive.

  13. Would love to see numbers with a Balata ball. This shows that the powers to be are looking in the wrong spot to control distance on tour. Simple solution, persimmon woods and blade irons.

  14. I just turned 50 and when I started playing I was around 10 (1982). I started out playing with persimmon and you’re right it was about that time that Taylor made came out with the “metal wood” lol. I had that Cobra driver and I think that’s the driver Tiger played in the late 90’s. I’ve never heard of those drivers between the Cobra and the Diablo. Those were impressive numbers with the persimmon but now go find a ball from that era and do it lol. The changes made in the golf ball have has as much impact on distance as driver technology.

  15. Why does your ball draw on the simulator but in real time it slices out of bounds to the right

  16. must be running out of ideas. Thumbnail is pretttty damn close to Good Good's from 2 months ago….

  17. Micah vs Brad on speed/distance would be a great video to watch….why weren't all the stats displaying??
