all right guys welcome back to the rich Shields Golf Show podcast episode 242 um you might see on the YouTube video that I’ve got a certain drink in front of me that is because I am in Northern Ireland that’s right a week’s filming trip in Northern Ireland for everybody listening you’ll probably guess the drink that’s in front of me it’s beautiful it’s stunning it it possibly might be the greatest drink that’s ever been made a perfectly freshly por P of Guinness in fact this you know what this is a free advert Guinness to sponsor this podcast there you go started it now my first little sip of it oh welcome top of the morning to you all right I’m here in um sleeve Doran hotel which is literally right next door to Royal County Down Royal County Down being one of the greatest golf course in the world often ranked either one two or three in the the world for golf courses right now as I record this podcast I should be somewhere on the bat nine of that Golf Course however the rain and the wind has stopped that taking place it’s horrendous it’s really really really bad weather so we’re in the hotel we thought we’d record a quick podcast um it’s crazy obviously we Northern Ireland really busy trip coming up I’ll tell you a little bit more about that as well but even last night Rory maroy as as we as I landed into uh Belfast airport yesterday and I drove down here to ro County Down Roy mroy was going on a charge on the back N9 at Quail Hollow and as I uh as I finished my evening after a couple of pints of Guinness um I wasn’t going to drink I’ve not been drink my last technically my last drink was at the Sunday of Augusta at the Masters but when you’re in Ireland you cannot drink right you have a couple of pints of Guinness um but yeah he won the he won the um the Val not valpar what’s the actual tournament called I’ve got Ed and Matt here as well and Joe it’s not the Val far Fargo oh Wells Fargo he’s got the Wells Fargo so you won the Wells Fargo loves Quail Hollow going into this week’s PJ Championship major um hitting some form it’ll be fascinating to see um but yeah right now we are basically at his Rory’s home Golf Course or he’s a member at Roar County Down um and it was a pleasure today I was actually sat in the clubhouse after I hit in a lot of golf balls today I spent I was very productive my time CU we couldn’t get on the golf course ended up hitting 266 golf balls today uh much needed practice lots of short game practice I’ve done a wedge chart I’ve done all different shot shapes I’ve been trying to hit I’m consistently trying to draw my driver it’s new strategy I’m going for um so I’m fully hit out and I’ve got Matt and Ed here as well Matt have you ever known me to ever hit that many golf balls in a practice session I think you’ve probably hit 266 golf balls in the three and a half years I’ve been working for you actual practice that is that is very true and it was really really good practice today now um I have got Matt and Ed here with me and Joe as well uh a guy is actually sunning himself he’s on holiday uh so he’s not present he’s not come on the island trip he’s gone to a family holiday um but The Show Must Go On so this week you’ll still get a full episode that you’re going to listen to now and you’ll still get a Clubhouse episode on Friday audio only if you’ve not subscribed to the podcast on audio channels make sure you do to get the Clubhouse episode on Friday but yeah I uh I hit lots of golf balls I feel prepared for a busy busy busy week tomorrow we’re going to have to squeeze in 36 holes uh to get all the filming done tomorrow I’m playing AR glass uh which is just down the road here from Road count down then tomorrow evening when the sun looks like it should be basking over the the golf course we’ll be able to play the bat nine or the full golf course but get that on video as well which is going to be pretty epic and we’ve got lots of travel we won’t tell you all the golf courses we’re playing you can find that out in the Friday episode at the clubhouse but some incredible golf courses Championship golf courses open hosting golf courses that gives it away a little bit because there’s only one here in Northern Island Royal Port Rush um but a lot of golf course I’ve never played before and all content that will be coming out the Channel I want to say soon but we’re so far ahead of schedule at the moment like going a long way in advance these are like July videos right I think so um the videos that I’m filming this week will be out in mid July we’re so far ahead of content at the moment which is great but it means obviously the stuff that we film right now I’ve said this a number of times on on um on the podcast videos aren’t always going out in chronological order so yeah they’ll be we want to put them all together all the island videos together and get them out back to back to back weeks it’s going to be absolutely epic in more pressing matters go on a fin push the button I have finally now officially entered open qualifying nice well I’ve actually done it and I’m a bit scared hence 266 bows correct but you know what that’s exactly why I wanted to open why I wanted to enter open qualify say that to me when we were discussing it I would not have H 266 balls today if I hadn’t entered open qualifying hopefully it’s the best 200 200 quid 20 you that’s that’s waste money down the drain ad no he needs to give the mic Matthew no cuz we filing it spray 75 content that is true is we may make the money back we will make money back from the 200 um but yeah I’m I’m really excited um like to say as soon as I did it I had instant regret I had like few comments there was a lot of there was a lot of you know what I I’m I’m horrendous at at listening to One negative comment out of a 100 positives and and a lot a lot a lot a lot of comments that came through on Instagram when I posted that had entered were actually somewhat delusional but very very very very positive I got some got I got some lovely lovely comments from you know fans who are saying go on Rick you can do it and and just to clarify the the yes I’m entering open qualifying I will be te it up with every intent of trying to get into the open but the reality it’s it’s a break 75 episode that I’m going to practice for get ready for under the pressure under the lights with a proper scorecard in my hand with other Pros what I actually did find out this week which is actually quite interesting that my first course that I’ve put down for which is hesc in Southport last year your friend my friend Ed’s friend Joe’s friend James Robinson entered okay yeah he missed out just but three over qualified really so if I actually break 75 three over because he was really hard apparently the the fairways and greens were hard as this marble table so apparently it was proper burnt out and therefore that’s why it was three over par um but no one was hitting putter from the Fairway there though correct you got my Str the advantage now now that I’ve got a wedge chart which I I’ve actually so I wrote it all down today in my little book is that what you were doing doing today I’ve got a little uh a little notebook I have my bag and the lovely lovely lovely stuff at rooll County down at the practice facility had this had this gorgeous fitting room uh it was really quiet because it obviously it was a horrible day so not many golfers out there really I must admit shout out premium Callaway range balls like chrom soft range balls um I had a GC I had my GT3 with me I had a trap man there and a little notepad I was absolutely in my element and I did all my wedges all my wedge charts so did like hip to hip swing chest to chest swing chest Tosh shoulder swing shoulder Tosh shoulder swing head to so I did all these different swing length with my all my wedges um and you remember this actually you know and viewers of the channel if you’ve seen the hit video you know the gapping session yeah you know the N9 iron that I had and I said there was an issue is it Juiced it it was three years three three years 3° weak oh well that’s what made sense like in the video I was like why am I in my 99 anywhere so Keith the lovely guy down at the D driving R today I said do you have a a loft and line machine he went oh no I don’t not here but I have one at home oh he said I’m going to go home for lunch I said would you do me a favor just take your this 99 and and check it it should have been 42 it was 45 so like one degree difference to my to my pitching wedge crazy so he’s now put it to 41 and a half so a tiny bit stronger I’m actually hitting at the proper distance again but how M they have brand new set clubs fresh out of the box I think that was quite scary actually I think we need to actually get a loft and line machine I mean no not complaining yeah I do to do with um sorry is that because potentially because they’re a bit more of a forged iron they’re a little bit softer softer irons definitely move easy without question but that that’s a lot that’s for a brand new that’s a manufacturing error that for me that really is the Wilson irons and listen Wilson you know I’ve used Wilson irons in the past never had an issue uh in fact time I I did open qualifi had set of Wilson V6 in the in the bag anding one my first ever and last ever huling one not the last currently oh yeah last ever is not the right description is it first ever and only only one currently so far um this trip hopefully this trip hopefully this trip would be nice um but yeah they we um yeah I can’t believe how we were so I had that change Keith looked after me I did all my wedges I hit M’s unbelievable I’ve made loads of little notes I’ve I’ve now um I really interesting phone call last week with a a I think he’s I’m pretty sure he’s a golf pro over in America called Scott faucet I’ve got to get him on the podcast CU his voice is incredible got to have him as a guest and he set up an app like a software called decade golf have you heard of it you have I haven’t so decade golf basically it’s that’s the best way of describing it without doing I don’t want to do it disservice it it’s it’s all it’s course management basically so it takes all your information and using Google Google Earth imagery and all this you can actually print out your own uh course management guy it’s almost like having a caddy basically and you work out fire you at your drive your 3w your longest iron and then they use this Google Map overlay and basically show you where the widest bit of that hole is so that that’s the club you should hit off that te and how to hit shots into greens and this other and had about an hour phone call him last week and he and you know he’s really willing to help me which is great but he said to me what what shot shape do you hit with your driver he asked me like my strength and weakness it’s hard to say really cuz I mean I don’t I find it hard to answer that myself you guys have seen enough golf of me you might be able to answer it I actually don’t know what my strengths and weaknesses really are um I I used to say my driving was a was a strength or being not the longest in the world I felt like I was always okay um and he asked me so he said what shot shape do you hit I said that’s an interesting question I I’m a natural draw the golf ball but I was probably spent 5 years never trying to draw the golf ball off the tea he said why I was like I don’t know I said I feel like my my right to left my draw was getting too aggressive and he said okay so what’ you try and do now and I said well now I hit everybody shot Under the Sun I pull it I block it I slice it I fade it I draw it he said driver is the only Club in your bag you should have one shot shape and to be honest when I started to think about that film with Bryson he just had one shot shape didn’t it you guys were there massive big draw and some holes didn’t suit that draw did it but he still hit it yeah yeah Tommy Fleetwood draw every single t- shot that he ever hits when I’ve played with him Lee Westwood bull it straight it straight Joe tiny little fade um like a lot of the but they’re so consistent those shot shapes like Rory we just talked about the start of this podcast big high draw every time he very rarely does he hit not a big high draw so but they’re probably not comfy doing that if they do have to rely on a fade they probably like would rather hit the draw that they can like say rely on every single shot same with no so this is driver only okay that’s what I say so driver only Ed just ask then is this also par three apparently driver only you should almost have it set to only only one shot I in you should have have that club adjusted and dialed to hit a big highy draw every single time or a big fade every time or whatever it may be so I thought you know what that’s quite liberating so I played a couple of rounds of golf last week with some guys from the marott and uh I stood there on the golf of course and and like I felt liberated I was like I can just hit draw every time and and honestly I hit driver so much better so much more free I hit the middle of the club face so much more so I’m really excited about that spent some time just hitting big high draws today which I loved irons no different you can it draws you can manipulate your irons a bit um but he also talked about this Scott faucet about how to go for certain pins when to go for him not to go for him uh so I’m going to learn a little bit more but um it was really like all I tried do then today with my wedges wedge charts it hit some nice shots my irons tried to change the ball flight a little bit and then just stood there with driver and just tried toit High draw After High draw After High draw and at the moment I can’t wait to see how it goes on the course like at the moment 9 out of 10 I’m hitting these big high draws cuz it feels natural to me that’s my shot shape really yeah it always has been even with your R I know there you go yeah with your wedge chart were you doing hip to hip or were you doing the I’ve done the clock in the past but I did try and do more almost like feeling position so my first one was hip to hip and that was like my club at hip to hip then I went chest to chest but that was more my hands going to my chest then I did one that was I might drop this one but I did one that was like almost um chest to like head like so a little bit of a longer follow through and then I did shoulder Tosh shoulder then did shoulder to Club over shoulder so not a full follow through but like a club over to shoulder that did head to Club over to should over shoulder it sounds complicated but it was great the only thing I I did drop so I went all the way up to full shots full shots with all my and then normally I was like I you know I don’t really do it on the course but I tried to do you know like grip down like full shots but grip down yeah it was not making a single bit of difference good to know that you don’t need to do that yeah to my carry distances it wasn’t making a jot of difference and if anything I was striking it worse okay so what I’ve now done set you a bit more set you up a little bit more for occasional thin or toing down I just I just felt like I I didn’t like it so so now to just take a bit off a club I do full back swing but three4 finish off yeah and the spin nice jeez that’s all you’re bothered about really spin like I should have actually brought my wedge chat down with you cuz it we might put it in the as a clip of this podcast there’s so many times when we’ve been out filming and Ed knows this and like Rick will hit a wedge into the green like Nice Shot middle of the green and it’ll land and obviously we can see it spins and he can’t see it spin and he gets the green the first thing he says how much did that spin every time how much did that spin and then he goes to the ball and goes the ball’s here and it’s pitched all the way up here that 30 ft of back you know what that is honestly really ingrained in me that is so ingrained in me even even today even today like it started raining after about half an hour 45 minutes of practice and I was hitting these little 30 40 yard little pitch shots which were lovely I really enjoying them and it was like just that ground condition premium ball got skip skiping I was like oh I could do this all day I do all day like I was doing that at the Marriot the other weekend and it was similar where it rained and then it just dried off just that little bit and you clip a couple and you get a couple of and you hear it like pull back and it’s just so good and then next minute you’re there for two hours doing the same shot over and over again I really enjoyed it so uh yeah I’ve I have always been addicted to spin I I had a little par three course where I grew up playing and me and my mate would take out a box of brand new strats with the ball at the time dead soft covered ones and we just literally rip him up he’d go to the tea I’d stand on the green watching like oh and then shout back his spun like 12 feet and then he would do the same and we just literally it didn’t matter how close it was going to the pin they still do that now I do that now and I get it on video to be honest when I when I review the content I just go to oh what was that all that spun it loads let me see what that look like um I know you’re not joking there as well no not at all so yeah I feel really in tune so yeah definitely it’s kind of put a rocket up my ass to to practice and hit balls um uh today I did want to spend some time kind of actually chipping around the green which cuz that’s actually feeling quite good at the moment I do quite like like linky Turf I’m going to really I know you’ve said it before to me Ed like I’m going to really aim Point as much as I can this week because I think if I can get dialed in on that I think my putting so much better that round at late NOA you remember when I I was felt like I was putting like God uh couldn’t miss anything I really Ain pointed it that day so um yeah it should be really really good I’m kind of really looking forward to it um there’s lots of exciting times the one thing I I can’t quite work out yet is whether I’ll try to enter some tournaments before open qualifying even if it wasn’t on camera just you know cuz definitely playing in a tournament an actual tournament is different to just playing and and every shot means something as well where sometimes you can be a bit like Blas about it you’re like I’m not too bothered where this goes where I’m just going to smash driver whereas in reality if you’ve got a card in your hand maybe a three wood or a five wood or something just to get it in play well I you know last couple of holes my club choices are selected by decade golf now I don’t I don’t get a club Choice anymore yeah so I I I think that really helps me I think that’s why I really like the wedge chat like some shots today even just on the practice cuz what I did after my I did all my wedge chat and I went on my phone and did a a random number generator between 30 yards and 130 and uh obviously it was all on carry and what was so confidence inspiring like what you now look at that wedge chart and and I must admit I’ve done wedge charts in the past I’ve probably not done it for a few years I really I kind of almost kicking myself I’ve not done it sooner um and I’ll tell you why I did a wedge chart cuz in a minute but let’s say a random number came out like 57 yards and I look at my little wedge chart and I’ve got like oh chest to chest with the 60 is 57 y 58 yards you like being told what you need to hit I being like what do I need to hit correct for me it was just like okay that’s all if I do that if I go chest to chest that ball will go somewhere near that number and I did all these 10 shots and I’ve worked out the difference and sometimes I hit it really close sometimes I was like four or five yards out but on average over the 10 shots I think the first time I did it I was like three yards out on average I was like that’s 9 ft if I can hit it within 9 ft from anywhere from 30 to 130 yards on average bloody hell right your Line’s okay exactly well that was it be dancing well if you saw again if you saw this practice line this um all these wedge charts these wedge shots I hit today like the balls were just in this like perfect Channel cuz you never really right and left with a wedge are you it’s all just dist like if you can get your distance control right your line should be so much better so and the re the reason why I did a wed shot a couple weeks ago I played I just went to nine holes with Robo um and I think I was like 72 yards away from one of the pins I went to S and old links and he said what you hitting from here I went oh I don’t really know I’m like I might go yeah three4 sandwedge or something and he said what you like what do you mean you don’t know and he got his phone out and he has all his wed sh his phone laminated at one point I that’s I’m actually going to ask the hotel if they’ll if they’ll print it off for me today because I obviously you guys were with me but when we went into raw County Down pro shop today I I spent a small fortune and one of those products that I bought today was a little score little scorecard holder so I basically want to print the wedge chart in my scorecard holder then in there I have my little decade course management um and then that in the back pocket little r counted down swagging it like Rory um and so he said to me like what you going to hit and so he brought his wedge chart out he said well for me 72 with my whatever 54 degree I do this swing so we kind of just did a even just a bit of basic Mass he went just try and do this swing with with that with your 56 degree and I’d do it and literally like three or four shots like hit were like 2 feet away I was like why am I not doing this like this is ridiculous that I’ve not done this so um so much less effort sometimes isn’t it like sometimes you can just go I’m going to really muscle a sandwich here when in reality you just do three4 swing with a 50 or 52 it’s so much easier and you feel like you have so much more control and then what I’ve done on my wedge chart you know like the Emoji symbol which is like a swirl yeah so I put swirly symbol next to the shots that spin spin yeah I might do I might do they’re the only ones he’s going to go with and then i’ and then on on I mean that I know this already but it was almost just to remind me like a a chest High to chest High swing my pitching wedge is a really really low flighted like 90 yard shot or something so I’ve kind of put a downward Arrow just to remind me like that’s not it’s not a fault yeah and then what I do need to work out I mean tomorrow hopefully now we’ve had a bit of rain overnight and the place has softened up a bit like the carry number loads of spin the carry number becomes the number anyway where when it gets firmer You’ got to go right well it’s it’s 80 yard flag but what do I actually want this to carrye on links Turf as well cuz that can get really really tricky like I’ve played a couple of links courses and especially in summer a bit like when you were saying hesc was really burnt out like when it gets like that like you want to be landing it almost like 10 20 yards short I mean you saw it even at at qua Hollow I saw the I was watching the Highlights today and like there was um uh the 17th hole which is this ridiculously hard par three nobody bured it all day nobody which is mad to think and and Xander shley and Rory probably had the best chances the final two and they just missed the puts it was a 28 yard flag and Rory hit seven iron but it landed like 190 and then ran like 28 yards on the green it’s hard to judge that so it’s like you know even then and Rory creates tremendous spin you think like that’s on a perfectly Green Golf Course in America but it was it was firm obviously here in the summer like 28 yards run out with the sand wedg is possible so that’s something I kind of now need to gauge I mean more importantly if my flag’s at 80 I’m I’m thinking what lands me 85 and Spins it back five yards you what I mean that’s my actual goal throw it back there rip it back into the hole yeah bring it back yeah so yeah I’m not sure what to do with with competitions I do want to I need that competitive juices I need to be able to feel that hit shots Under Pressure but I do feel like straight away even just I know it sounds stuff but couple of days last week when I played I played 18 holes on Thursday 18 holes Friday 200 Dr balls today I’ve got you know five round of golf coming up I feel like right let’s see what’s actually possible and let’s try and build on it cuz open qualifying is literally like five weeks away it’s not far yeah have a good build it five weeks uh yeah five or six weeks five or six weeks away so it’s not far at all so um I do need to put my foot down on the accelerator and kind of practice as much as I can I’m not going to mess around my swing too much it’s more just managing what I’ve got managing the course and right Club selection with this this app and your wedge chart and then You’ be laughing because there’s not you know we’ve seen you play enough golf there’s no huge mistakes it’s just a culmination of small mistakes where you’ve you’ve maybe hit a club too much or Club too short and then left yourself with a really awkward distance in um you know and I think a lot a lot of people who watch the videos and and you know get the odd comment here and there but don’t realize sometimes actually how long these courses that you play off off the tips so far back um and occasionally they set up pins in odd positions to actually make it really difficult so even if you H the Green in R it’s still quite difficult so it’s funny actually so after I spoke to that conversation with Scott I said what should I what should I measure between now and next time I speak to you whatever I said I’ve got loads of golf com up in the Ireland what what do you what what things do you think he he has asked me to measure where you missing on Fairways no he’s actually not bothered about Fairways really yeah cuz again going back to his point like if you hitting driver far enough and you going for the widest part of the hole if if you if you only got 110 yards from the roof it doesn’t really matter does he have a book by the way or is it just all just things he said to you VI a phone call this was OB he’s got this app that kind of teaches you through it but obviously so Greens in regulation okay that’s pretty standard one Strokes gained putting so what I need to do tomorrow or when I play is actually work out how far away I am from each put so I just have to pace it out CH isn’t that hard how many yeah how many three puts I have how many bgs on P fives how many doubles they’re actually quite negative things but um n how many bog is assuming you’re getting doubl how many how many bog is inside 15 yards uh this is a very this one hit home how many times I two chip how many times they get up and down mental scorecard errors and what it means by that is like if there’s a if there’s a shot that you’ve stood over and you’re not comfortable with you’ve got to Circle at that hole and go there was a mental scorecard error there like I didn’t I didn’t stand over that shot fully committed and then then that’s it so those four or five things apparently four or five or what I think even the last five of what tag used to measure in his Heyday um cuz really yeah so if I can work on all of that I feel like I’m going to be shooting ridiculous are going to give him the most information for you to then improve which is correct things that you probably like I remember when I was younger it was Fairways hereit greens and regulations and how many puts but ones you’ve said there are a little bit obscure cuz I think I think how many puts now has has become a bit obsolete since kind of Strokes gain has kind of started to kick him because Greens in reg puts per round it can it can you know you might have missed a green by a foot you play a dead simple chip and then you then you’ve hold a three-footer or whatever yeah like that’s not showing your puttings good it’s showing that your Ryan play was bad and then so I’m putting like and then the other thing he’s actually he’s going to send me in fact I might try and get it before tomorrow things like stats on putting cuz I think I I expect too much from my putting I stood over like a 15 foot footer thinking I have to hold this but the the actual stats of holding a 15 foot is really kind of quite low I’m sure the Toro one from within or just outside 10 ft I’m sure it’s like 50% from 10 ft even for Tor proo so nice that you had the confidence that yeah that you you think the problem with that then I think I’m too hard on myself if I miss it well if I accept it if I go right yeah if if I have 10 10 foots today I’m going to miss five of them okay if I hold six I’m winning yeah you’re on a good round then and I think if you miss few at the start then give the m and make sure he can hear people he Matthew if you miss a few puts at the start then do you feel like you’re going to have to make a few at the end possibly possibly but then statistically you probably should make him in the first few but then you almost think well well if I’ve not made him now statistically it’s like when you play it’s like when you play roulette hold on blacks come in 10 times I’m going to bet my life that red comes in right now because statistically it has to there comes another black but it but yeah so maybe maybe stats go out the window a little bit there but uh I think it giv it would give you reassurance to go you know what at least if I’ve got you know a 10 footer here and it’s let say it is 50% I’m like okay well if I hold it you know I am winning I’m technically winning on that Port rather than even holding a 10 foot and going I I should have done that if I missed it then I’m losing but yeah so I think it’s just changing my mindset and and uh I think these next five rounds of golf I’m really excited about um you know make sure that I can wedge it close and drive it well and be mentally strong mindset thing though about the long puts as well that’s something I think massively important in terms of like watching you from obviously filming you all the time you so hard on yourself on those 15 Footers but then you almost go for them too much and then because in your mind you’re like oh I should have hold that you then don’t give any respect to that returning put and the amount amount of times I mean everyone’s seen on sort of the videos where you miss that return putt that’s relatively easy but I think because you actually wound up that you’ve missed a 15 footer you just stand up to it you don’t do your routine you don’t line it up and and then yeah that goes from a par to a bogey quite quickly yeah so that’s definitely important for you A lot of people have said online as well I should maybe get James Robinson to caddy for me but I think he I think he’ll be playing him yeah I think he’s going to enter himself uh get to caddy for you I’m not sure we head are the best combination when it comes to on course I could I feel I’d feel very like if I did shot in front of Ed be like like like like a condescending parent like uh Richard I’m not angry it’s when uh when Ed sometimes goes up to the green and uh there’s a few of us left by Rick and when Rick hits a shot and he’s like oh it’s all over the flag that and it lands and we can’t quite see where it is and there just no reaction from Ed it’s like all right well it’s not within six feet is it cuz he’s obviously not impressed with that standards yeah Ed’s off two handy for those listening um actually I saw a comment the other day under the gapping session video yeah uh about they’d love to see yardages from guy and Matt aka me uh about different handicaps so I actually did a yardage gapping session after yours cuz I was thinking I’m quite fancy doing mine now so this for reference is I’m off eight handicap but you’re you’re not a reference as as an eight handicap but you fit and you swing it fast yeah but they want to know what an eight handicap would no you’re not an average eight handicapper I’m well the S tell me how far you carry seven out so I want to know 169 that’s I don’t think that’s realistic that’s not realistic that’s not realistic you but my scores are reflecting you as an eight handicapper it’s not the average bear a handicapper if you took if you took 1008 handicappers okay where do you think your swing speed would fit in those eight handicappers it’d be fairly High it’d be like one the top one% Mark I know I can swing it fast I do well I KN I know how fast I swing my driver I get 119 so that’s in the 1% of eight handicappers it is okay that’s that’s above tour average you swing it faster than to the tour players I do swing it pretty quick so so your numbers are uh they irrelevant totally irrelevant so for the person who comments this don’t waste just it’s crap I’m very sorry unrealistic but it is it’s true like it you if you it sounds D for an eight hand if you were to get your distance for an eight handicapper you’d almost need to figure out what’s the average swing speed of an eight handicapper cuz that that’s a more re re realistic reflection how much do you recommend a person between handicaps of 12 and 15 doing a wedge chart or do you think it’s something that may maybe you need to be a little bit lower I I think you probably just don’t do as in as in depth okay I had a lot of positions today I think you need to know how far your full wedge shots go maybe maybe a 3/4 and maybe a half do you know what I mean yeah so you so you’re not making it too complicated keep it simple cuz I had like God there so many different variations today and and I might scrap some of them I might after a time go I’m never using this bloody head to shoulder one yeah or whatever I’m doing like shampoo right head and shoulders um I might scrap that one because I’m never using it so for me I did a lot of them today but I definitely think like you need to know how your full swing is your three4 swing which is like maybe shoulder high and your half swing which is like hip high really I think if you know those ones it’s pretty good um I’ve got some questions actually from last week um the Think answer uh guy are you going to C for Rick in the open qualifying I don’t think I don’t think I’d want guy to C me open qualifying I don’t think I would he’s a good hype man but I think he’d do a in as well trying to beat you he turn guy turned into a match halfway around your little shot go right I’ll show you how to do it 20 quid if this goes in 20 quid 20 quid if good at putting the other people off though yeah exactly um imagine if you get drawn with Sergio is he I don’t think he’ll do re I reckon he’ll get Exempted final qualifying but once I get into final yeah obviously uh this is a great question how do you practice on the things you are bad at without losing what you are good at it is prati that’s a tough one yeah practicing things that you’re bad at is crapping and it’s no fun either because you’re crap at it so you just hate doing it it’s a bit like well you’re not always bad at it but like no one ever like the amount of times you go to the range and you hit wedge through to driver and then there’s so many memes about it where you go to the putting green and hit two puts like no one ever practices putting like it’s just it’s boring to put for one it’s nice just to hit wedges at greens and watch it spin back 30 feet all day but like it is hard to practice what you’re bad at and then a lot of the time even I from from my experience um practicing your putting can not so many shots off your score compared to definitely like you could you could practice getting fast all winter but if you actually did all that time on you putting and starting the ball online you would probably knock five or six shots off than being able to hit it 10 yards further there’s a there’s a question here when when are we coming to Australia I think we’ve got to do it I don’t think we can squeeze it in this year and also realistically when’s the best time to go to Australia it’s in the summer for us our summer our summer yeah when then our summer we it’s busy and it’s nice here so we need to find a a gap may maybe like have to commit to go in maybe like March or April that would be a good time to go um rightly April no cuz that’s the Masters and after obviously once I qualify for the open I’ll probably get I’ll probably get invited to the Masters um right last question um have you had a pter fitting that’s rubish last question I have had a p f 2,000 but I am actually using that P to be fair yeah um right would you rather be a Jedi or a wizard I don’t know enough about Star Trek I’d go wizard I’m I’m a Lord of the Rings guys so wizard all day long I think you missed what I said I said I’m not that into Star Trek Star Trek wow there you go proven I like to I’ve literally not watched any Star Wars films ever ever ever ever ever well I’ve watched like one or two yeah what Biz bizarre story I’ll tell you this script so when I was born many many moons ago um my family my family had my family had a dog okay and when I was born I obviously the dog was already there I didn’t have any say what the dog was called and the dog was called Jed and the reason why it’s called Jed because another family member who’s not actually lives in our family but is a family member um called our dog Jed because of Return of the Jedi yeah yeah I’ve still never watched that film so a dog that I had for 15 years of my life who was literally the best in the best animal ever I’ve never even watched a film that he was named after anyway thanks for listening everyone hopefully that was a fun episode hopefully you enjoyed it we’re going to do little 10-minute podcast uh Clubhouse episode on Friday or only so make sure you’re checking out that If you are going to do gapping sessions you also need to include the make / model or your clubs and their lofts. Strong lofted irons could add a full club to your distances.
I don't know what my weakness is 😂 chip much.
266 balls and he has mastered golf 😂
Matt really need to work on contact or launch conditions if your swinging a driver 119 mph and your 7 iron carries 169
Have never tried fading my driver. Always go for a small draw – used to be my favourite club however lately has abandoned me
Dear Rick,
Most of us are happy to hear you are entering open qualifying! We won’t care if you shoot 86 or 71 we will enjoy watching you compete in a competitive golf setting and hopefully having fun doing so. Best of luck pal.
Goodluck Rick!
🤞🤞🤞

Cant wait to follow the results!
Hoping for the best!
Ouch!!
Genuine question…. and asked in a respectful manner
Matt swings a Driver 119mph… but carries a 7 iron 169 yards
Seems to be disparity there to me as I'd of thought his 7 iron would carry further in relation to swing speed????
Can I ask opinions on how this is, or am I way out in expectations?
I think it’s wrong to equate swing speed and distance with handicap. I would bet that Matt types aren’t uncommon. Young athletic guys that are good ball strikers but not all that good at course management, putting and short game. I play off around 20 handicap but I can bomb a drive at 180mph ball speed 300 yards down the fairway and get my 7 irons 190+ yards. I can’t putt to save my life. In practice, even with great distance it’s real easy to be 10-15 yards off line.. duff or blade a green-side chip. Then 3 putt for double bogey. A bunch of my friends are in the same boat.. good distance. Poor golf IQ and course management. We play around 90-95.. golf is hard.
Local knowledge isn't the best. Alot of people in Hollywood won't be happy you didn't get Rory's home course right 🤣 all the best for open qualifying
Lol at the idea of a wedge chart. I'm never close enough to use a wedge on my second shot!
I absolutely agree with the statement that play in tournaments is different. I've played competitive baseball at the national and collegiate level, so I'm no stranger to competition.
When I picked up golf, it was a lot of fun, but starting proper score and now playing in the Amateur Players Tour, the fact that each shot matters makes me plot my way around the course better and forces me to be smarter in my regular weekend play as well.
I'm off of 14hcp right now, but am planning to do a simple wedge chart. I got my 52 Kirkland bent to 50 to try to close the gap and get better at finding out what my carry distances are. Is there another way aside from Trackman to reliably get this?
Excellent Star Trek nerd joke!
I love ya Rick…..but shouldn’t you be able to break Par at least once in a round of golf before trying to qualify for the Open….😎
At last Rick welcome to Ireland ☘ You will have a great time. And only an hours flight time from Manchester. Can't wait to see the content. Enjoy the Guinness and the craic. Slainte.
Great to hear you're working with Scott Fawcett Rick. Scott is absolutely one of the smartest people in golf. I was thinking that a series of videos of you trying to up your tournament game with Scott caddying for you would be incredible. His golf strategy game is the benchmark. He's also a great player. Imagine a kind of "One Year to PGA" or even more exciting an idea… Team up with Scott and aim at playing a Liv event next year. Just some thoughts. I'm thinking gym, training, coaching, the whole nine yards… You're in a very unique position. Use it to educate your audience.
Thanks for the impromptu podcast. I really enjoyed the conversational nature and hearing Matt and Ed! Would love to see a round table format with everyone on camera chatting about topics. You couldn't refer to it as a rough cut (wink wink) but I think the lads add a lot to the discussion.
Best time to come to Australia is March/April. End of our summer heading into Autumn. I would love to come meet you and watch you play. My local course Port Lincoln Golf Club, South Australia would be a great break 75. Hoping you can find the time to come “Down Under”. Probably to late but will be keen to see if you qualify. Good luck.
I have to be snarky – 266 balls??? That's what? 18 holes for you? 😆
Just a good natured rib. If I could hit half as well as you, I'd be a much better player. Safe travels and we look forward to the videos!
