Rory McIlroy shoots 4-under 67 | Round 3 | Wells Fargo Championship | 2024

In the third round of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, Rory McIlroy gained ground on the lead, carding a 4-under 67 to get to 11-under for the tournament, just one back of Xander Schauffele, who sits atop the leaderboard after 54 holes.

The PGA TOUR heads to Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club – site of the 2017 PGA Championship and 2022 Presidents Cup. This is the sixth signature event of the season, which features an elite field of 69 players. Rory McIlroy returns this week to a place where he’s had plenty of success. He’s claimed three victories here (2010, 2015 and 2021), as well as five top-10s. He enters this week with momentum after winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry two weeks ago. Wyndham Clark will also tee it up as he looks to become the first player to win back-to-back here. This was Clark’s first win on TOUR, and he has claimed two more titles since that victory – including the U.S. Open. Xander Schauffele will also be in Charlotte this week as he hopes to secure his first win. He finished second here in 2023 and claimed T25 or better in 10 of 11 events this season. Others to look out for are Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood.

miss one this week these things are perfect true good all the way all the way for mroy both mate from about the same length maroy first for birdie [Applause] he’s watching it heading up the left and oh covers it easily [Applause] wow TR this could be the better decision oh nearly that’s a great leave though Frank certainly is so he shouldn’t hit the wrong ball that Ro on past reminds me a little the walk and talk again pleasure good to good to be with you it is uh it’s nice to be back at the mroy Invitational here in Charlotte I mean you’re loved everywhere all over the planet but uh it seems like there’s an extra little boost of uh love for you here in the Queen City yeah it’s uh it’s it’s been great every time I come back to Charlotte it’s uh yeah it’s sort of like a second home for me obviously I’ve got a lot of great memories here and being able to get a few wins and have my first win here uh you know it’s and yeah this is you know I think I’ve celebrated 13 of the last 15 birthdays here as well so uh it’s been a it’s been a great place for me Quail Hollow the Harris family it’s uh you know it’s just it it’s it’s an awesome week it sure is it’s the best I want to jump into the strategy here at 14 Rory obviously reachable for you you’re one of the longest hitters in the game but you decided to go with the Fairway would there so what are you thinking when you’re making that decision yeah so Trevor I hit fivewood because I felt like my three-wood could get into that that green side bunker on the right and with the pin cut on the right side of the green I thought that was going to be a pretty tricky uh bunker shot so I I knew that fivewood wasn’t going to quite get there and and I didn’t I didn’t quite get all of it um but it’s given me a straight straight pitch up the green and and a nice angle to to to sort of hit my second shot here okay is this one of those holes that you check the whole location out before you tee off and kind of have an idea what you want to do or you one of those players that just goes by feeling the moment uh I I like to see where the whole location is especially on a on a green like this it’s got quite a bit going on um you know even if I didn’t quite get to that bunker over on that down on that uh Hollow sort of Xander hit it to it seems like it’s a it’s a pretty tricky chip so you know I’m pretty happy with even though it wasn’t the the best golf shot I’m pretty happy with where it ended up real quick one before you get to your ball there you’ve had such a great uh success here played so well what is it that you love so much about this golf course you know I think it’s um you know I I you know I I’m so comfortable off the tea here and I feel like when I feel like when I get I I you know I get on the T boxes here I have an advantage straight away and I’m feeling you know I luckily I’m feeling good with the driver this week and you know if I do that I can you know I can take advantage of so many holes that maybe some of the other guys can’t and um you know that gives me a huge Advantage Plus obviously so many great memories over the years that I just come here with with Good Vibes all the time well we’ve been uh very fortunate to document it since that magical first win that you had all those years ago you brought it up well leave you and get back to focusing on this shot but happy 35th birthday one week ago today Rory you’re the best thanks Jim I appreciate that yeah I feel an old but I still got a few left in me I think oh yeah we know that we look forward to watching all the best Rory maoy all these amazing things he’s accomplished here in Charlotte 2010 that put he made it the 18th from 42 feet 2015 he did it again 2021 he’s had magical rounds just needs to land it a few yards onto the front of the green it should release towards the [Applause] hole apparently he knows what he’s doing guys he sure does doesn’t get any better than that from that range and the president’s gup got three points and a tie and the tap in birdie forer Rory and that moves him to 11 under par with shley oh [Music] [Applause] boy oh it stayed up it’s outside the penalty area too yeah yeah look at this hopping along dangerously and even sits up the Winding Creek going way down the Sha with it above his feet here get in the [Applause] hole this one on a really good line if it’s the number just couldn’t spin it from there Trevor yeah but a good result that’s this one actually from our crane on the right side of the 18th landed whole High yeah he loved it he actually gave
