Maddock Smiley Kaufman as well uh his weekly uh appearance with us as we will get ready for the Wells Fargo uh coming up this week at Quail Hollow uh and then tomorrow of course full full golf Wednesday as we have been hot as a pistol with the golf and we are going to try to keep that going this week with two events uh remember you got not just the Wells Fargo you got the Myrtle Beach uh classic going on this week as well with Jojo heith and the crew uh of course uh every Tuesday and Wednesday here on C Toc you get uh an extended version of the very popular sports grid radio show Panthers huh what happened what happened unbelievable win 51 guty well Joe look what happened uh a very gutty win and it’s the first game of a long seven game series between those two and it you know it’s funny Joe I I think I mentioned to you last night and I know me and Scotty talked about it yesterday going on these teams that had just played seven games still in a little bit of a rhythm you know no T downtime Florida had an entire week off Boston goes into that game after beating up uh beating Toronto in game number seven would they have a little extra juice we’ve seen that sometimes in the opening game of the following series and sure enough Joe uh Boston had a little bit more hop last night will that be the case tonight in a similar situation in fact Joe not a similar situation an ident IAL situation Dallas off of game seven against Vegas with Colorado who’s been sitting around for a week do we get the same result show now difference is Dallas at home and they’re obviously the favorites in the series Boston Road not the favorites but I think Dallas uh like Boston last night might come out with some jump tonight absolutely I mean we picked uh Dallas to win the West we’re not backing down now I think they’re the better team I think they win it in six car for four games to two and I’ll just say this about the performance last night about Boston I believe they’re the best team in the East I think it’ll be the Rangers and Boston square and off so don’t I’m telling you this is not a one hit wonder and I think this team is a little bit different from last year where they had the 3-1 lead against the Panthers and relinquish that keep an eye out I think the Bruins are in fact for real coupled with the fact that marchan didn’t even score last night and they won 5-1 unbelievable actually Joe I mean it’s seemed like all the guys that scored from uh were from deep down on the list right you know no pasta no Maran uh you got some guys on the defensive line the Brendan Carlos of the world who were scoring goals for Boston so they take a one lead we’ll discuss it a little bit more later and tonight two games we mentioned Dallas in Colorado a game one and a game two at the Garden for the Rangers and the Hurricanes uh so we have that today as well to discuss on C toc on the NBA side Joe two uh you know it’s weird one game was great the other game was awful but it feels like Joe the significance off of the awful game is what’s really more important here right I think the Nick Pacer game was great we’re going to talk about it we’ll BR some 40 points again but the Timberwolves destroying Denver in the way that they did and winning both games at Denver against the defending champs the favorites etc etc I think that’s kind of the bigger deal today Joe are is Denver done are they going to win four out of five games and somehow come back in this series against Minnesota I’m not so sure Joe not the Anthony Edwards and that Cru playing yeah they got a little fat as we like to say right you win it it’s very difficult to repeat whether it be NBA or NFL we know how difficult it is Garver but I equate you know that performance with Edwards and and Cat the last night to to just what we saw with Jimmy Butler last year and Miami now can they stain that throughout the West because we still have teams like OKC and you still have Dallas battling it out tonight that remains to be seen But when you jump up early with the Killer Instinct I mean Edwards is carrying this team right you know he he is the best player out on the court so as long as he stays hot basketball is the type of game where you could ride that player to a certain point now I don’t know if they have enough potentially to hoist a title but right here right now they look like the more complete team through two games in the series right as good as Edwards has been uh Joe you got to understand they got other guys uh that are playing huge roles whether it’s Nas Reed whether it’s Jaden McDaniels whether it’s uh the Alexander Walker the kid hitting the threes there in the corner so they’ve getting contributions from up and down the lineup which they need they didn’t even have goar last night uh and they still went into Denver and they absolutely tore them up the Nick Pacer game was great what bothers me about the Nick Pacer game Joe is you know once again and this is kind of weird right because the Nick Philly series was like this also once again what’s everybody talking about today the refs it’s like so this is like following the Nicks around Joe it’s like the refs are the discussion today because of that that call at the end of the game with the screen uh kind of similar to uh what do we have Joe the I what game was that the Iowa game a couple weeks against Connecticut right in the final four so very similar and I don’t like that when that becomes the discussion but that’s kind of the way the cookie crumbles Joe yeah it is and now the Knicks are like the flavor though of the league now it feels like right when you know they win the series against Philadelphia everybody loves Devan chenzo and Brunson and Josh Hart the Nova Knicks I’ll just say this you know the Pacers played the right type of game plan they had it halberton was a complete ghost non-existent as it related to the points aspect I mean you can’t have halberton dropping in more assists and only six points and expect to beat the Knicks in the garden I’m sorry I know other role players stepped up but you gotta have one of your best players want want The Rock when it counts right I mean come on that was a gutless performance from an offensive perspective anybody but me anybody but me anybody but me uh is kind of where it was at that’s for sure we will talk about that and we have two game ones tonight in the NBA finally uh Dall and Oklahoma City are going to get going with a game one and Cleveland off of their game seven win against Orlando uh they are in Boston tonight Joe with uh some heavy Lumber 12 and a half right now uh for the Celtics and the Cavs so we will get to that too we have a Full Slate of baseball tonight that we also have to discuss in fact Joe I even have one afternoon game for you in fact because it’s starting in like 15 minutes I’m going to give it to you now uh and that’s Texas and Oakland who are about to get underway I know that Ur is going for Texas this afternoon Oakland is going to send Ross strippling to the hill uh minus 125 for Texas plus 105 for the A’s and a flat 8 Joe big comeback from Texas last night late uh talking about it you know two significant games obviously last night and the Nick Pacer game was great down to the Finish you know down to the wire game what bothers me the most about it Gabe is and you tweeted about this a little it seems like even in the sixer series and now the first game of the Pacer series the next day it’s not a the Nick games have all kind of skewed towards one narrative and that’s the refs uh there really hasn’t been you know brunson’s got four straight games of 40 plus points I don’t even feel like he’s getting the proper du because it seems like the officiating in the Nick games since the playoffs is started has been the main focus that’s a great Point nobody’s talking about Jaylen Brunson nobody’s talking about the performances on the court and you know is it fool fool me once you know fool me twice is it one of those type of situations now you know Nick fans I tweeted about this and Nick fans were coming at me you know they won because Brunson scored 43 points and I said listen I’m far from a Philadelphia 76er fan but there’s no disputing that Maxi was tackled okay at the end of game one and it should have been called and it it affected the outcome of the game now similar situation to last night though right Carver the Pacers were still losing they were down one right they had the ball they’re down one so there’s no guarantee they’re going to win but and I know it’s it’s frustrating for Nick fans to to you know that they you know Nick fans feel as though they’re being unfairly called out we don’t get calls it’s not true Brunson is why we’re winning but you won a series in seven games and there’s not like there’s not a lot of room for error with this stuff Carver you know what I’m saying so you know that that Philly game and then let’s get into the let’s get into Nick nurse trying to call a timeout and we can argue about yeah you could say listen he should have called a timeout and got the ball at half court that’s true they also should have called a timeout when he given him the timeout like put have it the NBA admitted the next day oh yeah by the way yeah but he should have been awarded a timeout and know that probably should have been a foul well it doesn’t really help now that you admit it now and you can’t just say either because it’s not like the Pacers Carver or some sort of public entity that everybody’s rushing to the defense of right like Stan Van Gundy during the broadcast basically said this is embarrassing okay he goes well we’re near Broadway and I guess this is you know it is what it is and Van Gundy was pretty critical I don’t often agree with Jay will but Jason Williams earlier in the morning today basically said the NBA is an embarrassment so that’s an embarrassment to the league I don’t mind bad calls Mike you can’t have like calls like that with 12 seconds left in a one-point game bro you so what you guys let you let him beat the crap you let them beat the crap out of each other right but now suddenly that’s unacceptable right like come on man well I think the other thing about the Knicks is is that they have act they’ve just been the one team that’s played in all of these close games down to the end like I think that that’s why it’s also getting more of the hyperfocus right Gabe because let’s be honest the majority of these NBA playoff games I mean they’re more like the Timberwolf uh Nugget game last night than they are like the dick P game they’re nlock both games and it seems like every Nick game is the game that gets under the microscope because with two minutes to go there’s crucial calls because the game’s tight and at times too almost like the NFL right when you know we all feel as if though the bills never get a call like oh the Browns never get everybody lion fans we always get screwed right like people are always going to believe this I think a part of it is maybe we just got to realize maybe there just bad officiating at times maybe it’s not personal maybe it’s not bias maybe it’s just human eror right but the NBA’s a little bit different dude than other leagues hockey you know I think hockey are the best okay I I don’t think the hockey had the best playoffs either Mike right personally but I do think they’re the best of what they do it’s freaking hard bro like it’s hard you These Guys these guys are skating up and down with the pros like the hockey’s the only League where the the the refs like are in good as shape and the players are because if they like hockey’s also the the only League where you have to take a test every year to stay in the league what a novel concept Mike you got to show up every year hey bro hey hey Mike can you still skate getting up there right know you’re 49 now can you still skate right and if you it’s like listen it’s it’s not like an emotion it’s like listen you’re not meeting the time barrier that you need I’ve talked about it with the NFL bro it’s not personal against senior because I thought it was excellent as always uh and it’s so true you have a lot of people right now telling you how bad things are in college with the portal with nil with things like that and I don’t disagree with some of those things but on the other side of the coin Mike people still watch people still go to games people still tune in it doesn’t seem as bad when you look at the at the real numbers involving college sports does it I think the main point that I was trying to make make Mike is that this is not a circumstance that we woke up and found ourselves in yesterday this is something that the NCAA leadership I’m talking Mark emert the various presidents who served on the Committees this is something these are decisions that they made over the course of 20 to 25 years that led us to this circumstance that led them to being reamed in court just about every opportunity from the abandon decision uh to the Austin decision to the decisions last year that allowed multiple time immediate transfers all of these things have led us to where we are and nothing about what the circumstance is now is going to change quickly there is no easy fix so if you find this situation untenable if you find it unpleasant you don’t have to watch nobody’s making you you don’t have to work in it if you don’t like it you don’t have to be involved in it in any way this is a choice being involved in athletics is a choice watching Athletics is a choice but here’s the other thing if you’re in it what good does it do to complain about something you can’t change you can’t change this so try to make the best of it I don’t see anybody trying to make the best of this I don’t see anybody saying hey this is a rough circumstance but let’s see what we can do to try to make this better let’s make sure that the agents that are leading players from school to school are accountable for what they do uh let’s make sure the players understand that if they’re making money now for the first time in their lives it’d be really smart to save a bunch of it because you’re not likely to make this kind of money again in your lifetime I mean if you’re Zach Edy yeah you probably will if you’re Dalton connect yeah you probably will but if you’re the backup point guard for a high major program and you’re getting six figures you’re not going to make that money easily so you better hold on to some of it I don’t hear any of that talked about all I hear about is how terrible it is and I don’t think that serves the sport the game the business I don’t think that helps anybody and Mike like it it’s not going away uh it’s not the door’s been the door has been open and people are going to have to start embracing it and honestly I think that they just have to start looking at things maybe in the off season a little bit differently obviously and is it going to be more like how we look at professional sports probably uh in terms of trade deadlines and signing days all things like that I mean hell Mike I wouldn’t be surprised if years from now and it’s probably even closer than I think they’ll make something out of this in terms of a production a spectacle a a transfer deadline day in the aspect of like English soccer in the Premier League you know on on transfer day or the trade deadline in the NBA and the NH and MLB they will make a day where there’s going to be guys on TV for 12 hours talking about all the transfers they’re going to have people hold out until that day make all their announcements that day it will become a television event Mike within five years I bet I think you’re right I do think the one of the things that one of the notes uh that was very Central to the column that I wrote was that I do believe we are heading inexorably toward an employer employee relationship and once that’s established then you can set certain ground rules relative to when you can transfer and how many times and how much of a commitment you need to offer your initial school and all those kinds of things all of that can be negotiated but the the establishment of players associations the agreement uh that you would then have to have between the universities and the players associations I mean it’s just not going to happen quickly so I’m talking about the circumstance that we’re in now now you can complain about it and and to no effect at all or you can try to make the best of it again by educating the athletes by emphasizing the positives uh I wrote a year ago like just like you said I wrote a year ago about how college sports college basketball in particular the sport to which I’ve basically devoted my entire career uh that that from the time we left the final four until July in the past nobody said anything about the sport maybe a couple of straggling coach hires but for the most part the Lights Went Out in whatever Stadium the tournament was played and then nobody paid attention to the sport again until July when the recruiting stuff started now you’ve got conversation about this sport every day so and so is going to Kentucky so and so is going to Arkansas so and so is going to UCLA that is positive publicity uh that it can be construed as positive publicity it’s not if you’re constantly complaining about it in fact I mean it’s early May and I’m I’m about to ask you about a significant transfer that happened today uh kadari Richmond Crossing two rivers and leaving Satan Hall to go join Rick patino at St John’s significant Mike and college basketball news on May the 7th I mean it is what it is H you know it’s interesting uh he’s now touched uh Syracuse St John’s and Satan Hall three members of the old Big East uh he’s going to play at all three of them I don’t think any of us ever envisioned that that would be the case and that’s rough that’s rough for Sean Hall I I think they do a terrific job in that program and obviously St John’s is probably a better little bit better healed uh and and that had something to do with his decision H to move maybe it had to do with the fact that the roster would be stronger at St John’s this year than it’s likely to be at seeden Hall I can’t say what kadar’s motivation was was but it it is interesting and it is something that we can talk about and you’re getting a terrific player to play at St John’s and now he gets to play a lot of his home games in the garden and there’s a lot of positives about it there aren’t any positives for uh for Coach Shaw uh because he loses a terrific player and one who did great things for him this year and last but uh but it’s it’s a huge positive for St John’s fans for every negative in the transfer portal there’s a positive uh it it it it all depends on the the player and the circumstance sometimes the player leaving your program is a positive nobody ever talks out loud about that but sometimes it’s good to get one of those guys to go I don’t think that’s the case with kadari but it does happen it certainly does uh Mike you and Scotty last week spent really the entire time talking about LeBron and bronnie and that entire situation there uh they did put him on the list uh and he was invited to the combine for the NBA draft which is the next significant stemp I guess you could say uh I guess that’s Mye kind of where you’re going to find out uh if look if the lake if he wants the Lakers to draft he’s gonna get drafted I mean it is what it is but in terms of what other people around the league think of him that would be the place you’re going to find out yeah I think you will but I also think it’s not fair to other players who did more to earn it uh I again this is largely because uh or at least significantly uh because he had a massive major health issue last summer that ruined his conditioning and impacted his entire season’s work but at the end of that season he hadn’t done anything to establish himself as an immediate NBA Prospect and there are lots of players who had significant college careers who could have done something with that there’s a g what they call the g-league Showcase it would have been fine to put him in there and make him if you do great if you B out in this g-league showcase they put you in the main combine let him do that let him earn it instead of gifting him this something he did not earn uh he did not Mike tremendous job as always uh we will see you back here uh on your mind uh but great job by dant chenzo with that shot Brunson finished with 43 points uh and the Knicks take a one lead in this series Joe yeah break him up the Nova Knicks that’s it hand him the trophy now no shot Indiana could come back in this series right what did you say last night that Nick bigs don’t like guarding the perimeter that’s why Wagner was eating last night he was eating every Nick game all the sixer games and this first game last night are down to the wire they’re down to the last two minutes which is when all this nonsense with the officials happen the ref suck and it’s getting magnified more in Nick games because they’re playing close games Joe if everyone else is playing as many close games as the Knicks I think we’d see as many problems a tooth to nail tooth to nail they’re fighting too to nail yeah they’re crawling on the nails to grind out games the NOA Knicks you know that Jo’s Joe’s had enough of the Villanova stuff too I could tell Joe’s had enough
