[Music] freaking first cut golly welcome to the first cup podcast I’m Rick ging and this is your recap episode for this week’s Byron Nelson joining me to break it all down Greg duar is here Greg that was uh exciting down to the very last shot yeah really did get uh quite compelling you know Josh was saying this before the um before we went live that you didn’t really know who was going to win um which these events happen from time to time and you didn’t it felt like pendrith but he wasn’t really taking it away um and so you just weren’t really sure maybe Alex norin gets in in there and has a chance to win uh it was kind of kind of wild and as it narrowed down you could see that uh I don’t know if you call it leaderboard gravity but the pressure of the opportunity to win really really played its role some type of gravitational or some type pool uh on on the top of the leaderboard indeed the final score was 23 under I think that’s what we were talking about last night that what TW we said kind of 23 under is the doors open for every for everybody or at least a handful of guys right behind Taylor pendra yes um we got that right and it probably should have been a playoff at 23 under um I mean oh it was almost a playoff at 22 under very very close to that so yeah we’re we were right on the button there and the other guys that were kind of way back there didn’t really threaten that uh which we kind of expected so it did come down to that group of basically what four five players that we really thought had a chance and some of them didn’t play well so that that’s how it that’s how it narrowed up late yeah that’s how it goes we are waiting on H Kyle Porter he is wrapping up on CVS Sports HQ right now so we’re expecting to have him here in the next couple of minutes while we wait why don’t we talk about some of the early movers on Sunday here Greg because Aaron Ry was shot out of a cannon he birdied eight and Eagle nine to go out in 30 then I think he might have looked up at the leaderboard and saw that he was very much in the mix because he played the second nine at just one under and he’s gonna end up finishing T4 great week but probably feels like he left a couple out there on the second night yeah I’m sure he does does um he he plays some really nice golf and he’s so hard for me to figure out cuz this does not seem like the kind of golf course that Aaron Ry is going to have a lot of success on not that it means he’s going to play poorly but H you know you don’t see Aaron Ry in my mind popping up in birdie Fest like this yet he was so solid with his ball striking today so accurate and even though the fairways are really wide and it’s not that important he was striping it right down the middle um I mean he had 13 to four uh 13 to 14 Fairways both days over the weekend so extreme accuracy off the te gave him a lot of um a lot of good quality Iron shots and that kind of limits the mistakes Rick and so it comes down to a putting contest for Aaron Ry on Sunday which is a nice position to be and especially when some of them start to fall yeah he gained uh two and a half Strokes putting in the final round alone that moved him to a positive putter for the week because he had been losing uh through the first three rounds he got in at 20 underpar sh Kim got in at 20 under par I’m Gonna Save the final group here for a second let’s look at Alex norin Greg it ends up being a solo third thanks to a Sunday 65 and with the way the board was kind of cracking towards the end there was an outside chance that noren was going to be able to get into the playoff he does not birdie 18 it would have still fallen short it would have put him at 22 underpar but he was the one applying a lot of the pressure to that final group and and he did it in kind of a simple way Rick this wasn’t overly complicated um he makes it hit a really nice shot into three and made birdie there but you look at these other birdies um five par five he was right up around the green and two I think he got up and down from the bunker there um six hit a little wedge in there almost hold it it was beautiful ear very early on in the CBS coverage nine the par five makes an easy birdie there 14 um great bunker shot but he’s greenside in two and then 17 hits a wedge in there close so these are kind of holes you expect to make birdies on right he doesn’t let anything slip away way uh takes advantage of those holes holes the longer par fours which aren’t I wouldn’t say that they’re challenging but but you’re not hitting wedges into them right you got to hit some longer shots in there and he just hit really smart shots to 25 30 feet and wasn’t really able to make any of those drop and then the last thing that I found interesting about Alex noren he missed that short one on 18 even the putt on 17 he made it was like two and a2t and he dripped it over the front edge and then 18 was really kind of soft as well he didn’t really knock it in there with authority but fortunately you know 20 2200 wasn’t going to be enough because if that if 2200 ended up being a playoff he would have been kicking himself six consecutive top 25 finishes for Alex norin and here is what I like about how he does it Greg so this is the statline and how well-rounded it is three Strokes to the positive off the T 2.2 on approach 2.2 around the green 2.8 with the putter he gained between two and three Strokes in all four major Strokes gains categories it was well-rounded throughout the entire bag and it keeps him in a lot of these events we’re seeing that in his results now yes um I don’t know what what he can do to kind of crack the finish line but you keep playing like this keep giving yourself chances and um his confidence will only rise and and I think uh it becomes much more realistic for him to get into the Winter Circle in the near future let’s add another voice to this conversation we have Kyle Porter who has wrapped up his obligations on CBS Sports HQ KP how’d you do on HQ it was a frenzy I felt like Ben Kohl’s things were moving very quickly we had I had solo and then we had in Baker Finch and then I was doubled up with Doug I mean there was just there was a lot of moving parts so for those who don’t know so we fill we fill the gap before they can get it’s usually Trevor imman or this week I guess Trevor Has the week off Ian Baker fch for the people that they actually want to see correct so we just fill the Gap until the stars come in and then we come back afterwards and do another segment have you have you experienced this KP because this is usually how it goes for me um you know we’re 30 seconds in or I’m getting a second question and I’m about to start answering and they go Rick we have Trevor rap right in your ear and you’re like okay well talk to you guys like you know you have to quickly end like a end a thought I have I have not experienced that we’re we’re a little bit like the uh you know in I think they do well it’s like the um the TR France or France however you want to say it the uh the lead what what’s the lead bike that like clears the way you know what I’m talking about Greg yeah I know exactly what you’re talking about I I mean there’s like the Breakaway pack but that’s not talking you’re you’re you’re basically the person that’s that’s uh reducing drag for the actual star that’s us that’s me and Rick that’s a thing that’s a real thing absolutely yeah because it’s a team it right so it’s it’s a team event but it’s also an individual event so you’ll have a player or a player you’ll have a rider on each team that is like the God there’s a there’s a specific name for it and I can’t remember it but out huh the lead out maybe yeah that might be it uh who who like Lance Armstrong would have somebody clearing the way for him and he would just ride behind them and he wouldn’t have as much wind and that’s like what we do for Trevor enan and yeah and then you get into like the um an opportunity comes up towards the end of the race and then the stars for the teams have more energy to go battle it out is a great bike player bike player yeah exactly I’m yeah and then they just ride by and you’re like oh well glad I could be here is this how like Gees fly south for the winter where they like rotate like everybody else on the team you know you start you go up front you lead the way for a while then you drop to the back somebody else goes up front yeah you’re basically like you’re basically like the pace car but I think there’s like one maybe and maybe they rotate it maybe they rotate it between different guys that would make sense the middle goose is like Lance Armstrong yeah so I used to follow this believe it or not um when I was younger and they they will rotate but there are times in the mountains when it’s kind of like a Twan race because not everybody can climb so Lance would have one guy with him I I think the guy his his main guy when he was on like us Postal Service was which what a team name by the way you love that USPS team I think his name was George his his lead his lead guy but I I’d have to look that up but anyway US US Postal Service what a team I was going to try to find his name I couldn’t find it fast enough all right well listen here’s what we have to do we have to now focus our attention on the final group of the Byron Nelson KP we’ve already talked about Alex noren we’ve already talked about Aaron rice so now we get to focus on the big three at the end here and unfortunately it was not a competitive Sunday for Jake knap after a pretty professional 67 on Saturday bogey free it was just out of whack for Jake knp he goes out and just one under he makes two Bogies at 12 and 13 he does cash one in on 18 but it’s a one under 71 which in at this event on this golf course that’s getting you lap by the field uh yeah wait was it a 71 70 he he made birdie at 18 7070 yeah okay okay gotcha I was I was all I was like all out of sorts there um I didn’t I was on HQ at the beginning of the the the tele like the coverage on CBS and I I kind of called nap out not called him out but I kind of noted him for like that this wouldn’t happen because he had won recently ton of confidence like he he had felt some of the things that guys like we saw with Ben Kohl’s had not felt before and so I was pretty surprised when he he went 55 on uh 1213 there and just kind of faded away I I did not see that coming um but yeah it was I mean obviously a disappointing finish for him Greg the talent level for Jake knap is incredibly High he’s still a rookie this would have been his second win in the last 16 starts it would have been his second win of his rookie campaign you’re not going to close them all but I would have liked to see a little bit more uh competitive nature out of Jake today yeah absolutely the the thing is with him and we talked about this yesterday there’s just too much curve his shots just there’s a little too much curve especially off the T and he didn’t have it with his approach shots today either he clearly didn’t have the timing um but the the t-shot at 12 that ends up in trees I mean this golf course is wide open it’s one of the reasons why you liked him heading into this final day I I thought he could get away with some of that aeny um but it’s just too aant and he’s chipping out of trees and nobody else is doing that you know both days at number 12 on the weekend he’s chipping out at at that hole uh and and it cost him you know I mean you you look now he finishes at 19 under four back of the lead but you put a t-ball in the Fairway at 12 um and all of a s that could change everything right if he makes a birdie at one of those two holes um this looks like a totally different ball game so yeah he’s a little a little loose today uh with his golf swing and he it just he couldn’t Outlast yeah because he got the he got the result from the rest of the guys in his group that that kept this open for a long time just just didn’t take advantage so it ended up becoming uh a two-man race and speaking of two-man races George hppy that’s it yeah he was the key yeah that’s right domestic domestic that’s the name I got the first name right so the the domestique is it says much of the of a cyclist effort is to push aside the eror in front of them riding in the slipstream of another Rider is easier than taking the lead the difference increases with oh there’s a whole thing on I um I would love to know and obviously it’s it’s a tangible amount if they’re willing to do this but like how different that would feel for Lance Armstrong to to be in someone’s slipstream compared to having to move the air yourself and I guess it makes that big of a difference especially over the distances that they are riding that this is optimal yeah well that’s why they have a pelaton as well right that’s why they ride in that big massive group right next to each other because it’s a little e you can kind of coast along in the in the pelaton and it makes I mean look I don’t know all all the little details but it makes a huge difference uh the chat is asking whether George was also using performance enhancing drugs the answer to that is yes uh as they basically all were he took he took a six-month ban he acknowledged it in October of 2012 and he had um some of his appearances in the tour def France retroactively disqualified yeah I was just I was just reading that out his Wikipedia page he also married one of the podium girls from the trde France oh which is a hilarious like very cliche almost like uh romcom movie thing to happen like uh star and cheer and homecoming queen cheerleader well it’s almost like the it’s almost like the backup QB gets the cheerleader yeah she must have been very knowledgeable and known no this is the guy who’s really doing the hard work yeah I want the domestic Lance just comes in here and steals all the glory exactly and I think the guy in the yellow jerseys also with uh Cheryl Crow yeah that right so did not see Cher crow that guy’s with the prom queen did not see a Cheryl Crow reference coming on the Byron Nelson recap neither did I we we run the gamut here so it ends up being two men coming down the home stretch Ben Kohl’s Taylor pendrith they get to actually before they get to uh that final hole we did get a little bit of Taylor pendrith magic Greg I think the first time that he uh looked like there was going to be a little bit of struggle coming in uh he hits a very bad chip on six he ends up in the green side bunker but he HS out there from birdie that is when I thought okay it’s fate Taylor Taylor p is gonna win this I didn’t feel like that later but that is when I I thought that in the moment yeah it kind of looked like things were starting to move a little quick for him uh after a great birdie at number one he hadit a great shot in there it kind of seemed like when he didn’t get five and hit that chip at number six Into the Bunker it seemed like we were going to have a little problem and this thing was going to get away from him um but you’re right when he holded that it was a huge um a huge shift in the momentum and it kind of bails him out for the bogy at number eight right you make you make bogy at eight and birdie at nine you still turn in two under you’re still in control of the tournament uh so it was it was absolutely a huge moment it also seemed to really settle him down um which I thought was big as well as he carried that through the rest of the round yeah the thing we got to remember here KP is basically every single one of these guys at the top of the board outside of Jake knap is looking for their first PGA Tour Victory and there is always that moment seemingly where a guy gets a break hits a good shot rolls one in with the correct Pace that gets them into the round th this was kind of that moment for Taylor pet I thought that exact same thing I was on HQ when that uh we showed that it had just happened and we showed the Highlight on HQ and I was like this is th like I totally know what you’re talking about where there a moment every tournament and sometimes in Majors it actually happens in the second or third round like I remember Bubba Watson at the 2014 Masters he went on this just crazy I think it was Friday run and you’re like he’s he’s winning this golf tournament right now you can just you can almost feel it and totally agree with you that’s what I felt like with pendrith and then he didn’t he I mean he faded he didn’t play great but he didn’t make it’s not like he he did the Jake nap thing where he made a ton of bogeys right he just sort of stalled and Ben Kohl’s was was coming coming up around the uh the last turn there pretty hard yeah Ben Kohl’s was uh racing out in front of his own domestic we will talk about how Kohl’s played and also about the critical 18th hole but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners and there started to get in the groove so impressive block your schedules aces are coming to CBS Sports Network and we’re back remember they played in threesoms on Sunday off split teas KP and while a lot of the attention was on Taylor pendrith a lot of the attention was on Jake naap these Powerhouse thorough breeds who were the two betting favorites before the day started Ben Kohl’s is just quietly plotting along he makes three straight birdies from four through six he attacks on another at 8 he goes out in 32 and he is looking like he’s under control yeah I mean totally like yeah it was interesting because you go out in 32 and you’re like okay he’s kind of in it and then a bunch of pars but then it’s it really got crazy at the end when he goes 332 and pendrith is like holding on for dear life with with pars like he’s 36 in pars on on the 17th hole and all of a sudden you go to 18 and Kohl’s is in control of the tournament I mean what was the what was the scoring average on 18 on on Sunday like 4.1 uh it was 4.17 and it was better than that before Kohl’s got there yeah that’s a good point uh so yeah it was it was really and I think the crazy and I we’ll talk about the Indian here in a second but I think the crazy part about the Indian is that he looked over those three or four holes before that pretty clutch like the shotty hit into 16 sick the putty made on 17 awesome you’re like man this guy looks kind of rock solid and then the Chip he hit on 18 was one that I’ve hit 3,000 times rock solid until the 18th hole Greg they step on 18t Ben Kohl’s one shot better than Taylor pendrith this is a hole that before the final group got there not a single bogey had been made uh Ben Kohl’s hits his drive into the left rough he obviously tries to go for the green according to col no he had a wonderful Lie from there his ball comes up short but it’s in between the two bunkers as that ball landed Ian Baker Finch said easy chip right uh not so much because Ben Cole stuffed it yes now it was uh you know a little bit below his feet um but still to think you all you have to do is get it on the green it’s it’s pretty simple from that standpoint um especially when you have a one- shot lead and giving yourself any putt for birdie I mean that needs to be the very first rule even col no said on the broadcast it’s an easy one to kind of gas by because you just don’t want to leave it short and all of a sudden he hits behind it you could see the club face Ro rotate over um he was not very happy with it and it ends up in just a terrible spot where his feet have to be in the bunker so that was a a disastrous chip shot at a really big moment for Ben Kohl’s who in my opinion didn’t hit a bad shot all day until number 18 I thought he was in complete control yeah um you even go back to the shot at 15 the par three Taylor pendrith hits it in there close um Ben Kohl’s hit it right at the flag I just don’t think he had the club to get it up on the on the second level so he was the straightest player he was um I think the most solid T to Green of anybody in the mix in this uh on this final day and it all comes down to one moment around the green and and he botched it KP I’m glad you said it’s a shot that you’ve hit a bunch because that’s what it felt like that like chunk one-handed release where you know the ball has no chance of getting to the Green is right out of the run good playbook oh gosh it’s and it you can you it’s one of those weird things where it happens pretty fast but in your your head your your mind is almost slow enough that you’re like well I know I know What’s happen I know what’s coming right here right yeah and and it feels a little like kind of yippy and like your hands move really quick and then you’re like oh my gosh like I barely hit the ball yeah I stabbed at it so hard how did it come out so softly oh as soon as he hit it I was I I it it was a weird moment where I was like I felt I was like I oh I I don’t know what it’s like to you know hit like a three 40 you know cut off the te I know what that shot feels like though yeah well the next one wasn’t much better KP because as Greg mentioned he is now choked all the way down on the steel he is very uncomfortable trying to get any footing in the bunker while his ball is is outside the bunker he actually hit a pretty good shot all things considered he he leaves himself uh with five feet for par and as all this is going on uh Taylor pendri is on the green and two he’s got like I don’t know 50 feet or something like that for for Eagle so the pressure is kind of mounting here well and I I actually go back to 17 on this because I think I think if pendrith doesn’t make the putt on 17 I think it would have been so much easier for Kohl’s to get up and down right yeah I mean on the second one or maybe even on the first one I just think the pressure that he felt with a one-stroke lead versus a two or whatever was I don’t know that just looking back you’re like I think that was actually meaningful to be only up one rather than two uh but yeah the putt was not I mean he missed it on the high side right like isn’t that isn’t that is that uh like the the green going back to like sloping back to front yeah yeah I believe I believe that’s right he missed on the high side and it didn’t even it didn’t even touch it no it was it was like his fourth weak shot in a row on on the same Hall it just it was the world was spinning very very fast while this is happening Greg Taylor pendrith hits his 41 foot Eagle putt to 2 feet 11 inches so he has three feet to go Ben Kohl’s is at five feet we’ve discussed that so Kohl’s has got to make uh you know hit his par putt first that goes begging and all of a sudden we’ve got the Mongolian reversal here for all the marel and Taylor pedits got three feet for the win not even a playoff three feet for the win outright which this felt like a playoff as soon as they stepped on that t it just felt like that’s what it felt like because you think about the way Ben Kohl’s played it right oh he doesn’t hit the green and two that’s okay you know he’s he should be able to give himself um a birdie Putt and like I thought he would hit it 10 fet past the hole on his first chip and all of a sudden you know he might miss Pender two putts and we got a play off that’s how it seemed like it should have played out um but all of a sudden you have the disaster that ensues and it’s a pretty straightforward two- putt for Taylor pendrith the one thing I was thinking if if he missed that and they went to a playoff at 22 Alex noren would be kicking himself yeah who do you think h a worst pet on 18 norin or um Kohl’s yeah Kohl’s at least got past the noren’s putt was the weakest thing I’ve ever what was that well I’m I’m glad you mentioned the putt on 17 the the both of those combined you know if the cup wasn’t there would have gotten a half an inch past the cup right one of dripped over the edge and the other on 17 I he he had like a one and a half foot putt he played break like dripped it in the middle when he made at dying speed putter too I don’t understand it I think it’s a I think it’s an end of turn I mean I think it’s the Kohl’s thing yeah like it’s just it’s and this is what I think if you’re watching on TV and and you watch the whole round and you’re like why does this Josh producer Josh said it in the chat that Kohl’s looks like looked like a different golfer on 18 and the thing that you if you haven’t been like out to a tournament or been on like in the in kind of the the heat of it in the last couple holes it feels like a different like thing it feels like you went from this one 16 whole event and now you’re playing this two hole event over the last two and it’s like it’s a completely different sport almost and that’s I think closing is a skill we talk about that a lot right and and I think it it mentally and emotionally it just does some things to you that are wild and uh I mean Ben Cole’s gonna be thinking about that last hole for weeks months he will think about it until he wins a golf tournament yeah those are not guaranteed now uh Taylor pendri is in the winner circle for the first time on the PGA tour congratulations it’s 1.7 million it’s two years of a job he’s going to start playing some more major championships because he’s only played a handful in his career and then Greg as we talked about last night this goes quite a long way to solidify yourself onto that President’s Cup team at the end of the year if you’re a bubble boy and you’re Canadian you have a huge advantage in making the team um if you’re a bubble boy and you’ve won this year and you’re a Canadian you’re you’re kind of It kind of Pops the bub you’re not on the bubble anymore you’re saying he’s in I mean he he look it’s a long way away it’s like saying the guy that wins the match play is going to get on the Ryder Cup team or should you know it doesn’t always happen that way um so there’s a long way to go he’s gonna have to perform to some level of Competency heading into it but it gives him all the Y buts that he needs right if if Mike we has a sign that he has some form and that he’s healthy he’s going to pick him on the team you know it’s a it’s huge momentum and this will be a huge draw in Canada the Canadian fans love their Canadian players and when they accomplish something like this it it means a lot to them up there so and and that could be a huge difference in the President’s Cup you get these Canadian fans going crazy and you know it could put a little uh it could put a lot of momentum into the international team he’s he’s not even in the top 25 right now of President’s Cup standings yeah they use uh they use owgr points this will miss will move them up a lot for sure but the bottom of this list is like Adam senson uh Rio gosh I’m gonna get into some names that I can’t I love it it can’t say Rio H Heat H say it again heat he heat okay K Le thiron Lawrence Alejandro toasty takumi Kaya I mean Taylor pendra is nowhere to be found he but he will yeah he’ll jump up to maybe in the mix I don’t know and also uh he’s got a little revenge on the mind oh o and four the President’s Cup yeah he’s got a little he’s got a little something he’s got to do uh any final thoughts on Byron Nelson we’ve got to talk about Brooks Kea we’ve got to recap the bets we got to do all that stuff so any final thoughts on CJ cup Byron Nelson uh do we do did y’all do spe on Friday we did spe on Friday do you wanna do you want to give us your uh spe State of the Union I mean I’ll Panic if you guys want to panic oh I think I’ve been panicking I think I think I panicked when he when he missed the cut of the Masters I think I’ve been I think I think I’ve been panicking here’s the thing and I read this in my grades for CBS sports.com it’s not like it’s one problem it’s it’s the boy plugging the holes in the dam and there’s not enough Fingers um I got a theory that is new this week hell yeah I actually think it I I think this could be one problem oh he stinks no he he’s has an injury you know like Rex hogard gave the best description that I’ve heard on this on Golf Channel on Friday night and this is what changed my mind there’s a torn sheath Jordan told him all this there’s a torn sheath it can pop out from time to time and when it does it takes you know a couple days to settle back in it’s not getting any worse it’s not getting any better um but it it will give him some fear on some shots that it’s going to happen so it’s not that he’s playing hurt but he’s playing constantly with a fear of being hurt and once you have that I mean I’m not saying the other problems are non-existent but that is the first thing you need to take care of you can’t evaluate any of these other things without that um and also when you’re hitting the ground like iron play where he’s really struggling mhm that gives you a little more fear off a te it’s fine and he’s driving it great so it makes me wonder well is the golf swing in a good enough position technically for him to play good golf yeah yeah I think so but if you have a mental hurdle and your goal going into the week is to not let it bother you that’s just a hard thing to overcome you know I don’t know if it’s possible get it go get it fixed is there okay so is there a fix like that’s that’s a good question because again I think I said this last Tuesday he explained it on this interview with no l up in January like where it it affects like the nerve like he was like speaking as if it was like affecting the nerve like all the way up into his shoulder and his neck like all all this stuff and you’re like God that I mean it it would explain Greg having like plugging the holes in the dam because it’s creating a bunch of issues not just like one issue his you know what’s been really bad is his his uh his short game horrible yeah atrocious worst I’ve ever seen it and so you’re like okay well is there I don’t I don’t know man like it’s it’s I I think I’m I think I can get on board with Greg’s Theory though I think that’s I think that’s interesting and I don’t I don’t know what the I mean yeah like do you go get a f like I don’t I don’t know what the path forward is for him I don’t know medically what you can do but I think he said at the m ERS I I I elected not to have surgery and do pt which leads me to believe there’s a surgical option and I’m kind of in the place where it’s like all right let’s go get it fixed then we can really evaluate all these things well what Kyle said is I don’t know what the path forward is is why that that’s the biggest concern right like I’m concerned about Victor havin but I know the path forward is he’s going to go into the Sim and like figure it out or whatever and he’s healthy and all that stuff I’m concerned about Jordan be because it’s mental it’s physical the stats are bad and we don’t know what the next year right yeah I guess those are all holes in the boat other than that though I mean we’re VI driving it great other than that he’s going for the career Grand which is crazy the only other thing that I noticed was uh my guy sewo I don’t know if we have that clip queued up but SEIU uh on since starting with the the Arnold P start starting with Bill so first week of March he’s played like six events I think he’s been positive Strokes gain in every non-putting category in in every event other than I think Approach at the Masters that’s the only like single thing that he hasn’t been he’s been unbelievably consistent that’s why he’s switched Putters like five times since then yeah I mean left hand low this week is that maybe he should play with like maybe you should carry three in the bag like Adam Scott did that one time listen I respect this as opposed to just like what’s the definition of insanity trying to say over and over and over again sure oh I do too I beat guys up I mean I was beating up Scotty Sheffer for not trying anything yeah yeah and then seiw is like okay I’ll just try something new basically every day look at this that’s so impressive on uh on Monday this week I was up at Travelers media day and Keegan Bradley was talking about his putting and how for a long time he was going from coach to coach to coach and everybody was telling him like this your stroke he was getting on all these machines and your stroke your numbers are as good as they can be like they’re they’re great this is you have a great putting stroke and it was buming him out cuz he kind of wanted something to totally overhaul and so if you’re SEIU Kim and I don’t know this to be the case but maybe this is the case with like k morawa seiw Kim maybe Ben on where the stroke is in a really good place technically but it’s not going in and a change all of a sudden gives you a little spark I mean it happens with K morawa every time he changes Putters he’s in contention yeah I I think there’s something to it well we’ll see keep an eye out for it um all right live in Brooks Best Bets one and done update but first we’re going to take a quick break and hear a word from our partners we need your sports news anywhere we’ve got breaking news to bring you then get your sports anytime you want them big trade news overnight to discuss because we know you need Sports all the time a lot of movement in the rankings this week a legend adds to their legacy we’re bringing you that breaking news right here on HQ CBS Sports HQ anywhere anytime all the time and we’re back Brooks Kea beat out a pair of Australians in Singapore this week he won live golf Singapore 15 underpar rounds of 66 64 68 this is his second Victory on live since since winning the PJ championship last year but what was very interesting about this are some of the quotes uh that came out this week while he was doing his Presser uh Greg he described the first four months of the year leading up to the Masters as quote a waste then go on to say that uh referring to after the Masters quote I think the embarrassment of Augusta really kicked things into overdrive for me and really having to put my nose down and grind it out a little bit harder and having to look at my team in the eye and apologize I’m not looking to do that again end quote there’s uh so many different ways this could go I I find it just absolutely perplexing um but ultimately what I think with Brooks kka is he hates losing and when he loses he gets upset like he did last year at the Masters you know that won’t happen again he goes out and wins the PGA um so I I think he hates losing he loses he kicks things into gear puts in some work get gets focused and he’s one of the best players in the world and I am kind of expecting to see that at the PGA Championship at Valhalla um and on the other side of the coin there’s like a a disappointing aspect to this it’s like you you go out and win the PGA last year and now you’re just kind of cruising around until like something kickstarts you you know like where it there’s still there’s a massive wh if with him because if it’s clear that when he’s focused he puts his mind to it he works at it he’s one of the best players in the world it’s also clear there are times when he doesn’t and that’s as a sports fan as a fan of his golf story that that’s disappointing he’s struggled on the putting surfaces he’s been switching back and forth between his the gamer Scotty Cameron the blade that you see for a while and the the new kind of I think it’s the Phantom that he’s been using he used that again in Singapore KP he gained four strokes putting over the course of three rounds and I don’t have to remind you of his PGA Championship record so as uh we know the next time we see him is going to be in Louisville and he’s gonna be one storylines again I’ve been practicing for weeks yeah he is uh four guy or excuse me three guys have won four or more pgaas uh you may have heard of them Tiger Woods Jack Nicholas and Walter Hagen and uh he could make it four I think go I think a lot of things about Brooks um I think one thing I was thinking about actually as it relates to him and and Greg was kind of kind of getting at this he’s a he’s a man he is like an world class just killer right like he just wins and I think one thing that’s sort of uh like shows that is he’s won all over the world which I think is a little bit of an underrated characteristic like think about the countries that he’s won in Saudi Arabia turkey Spain we’re going back to like challenge tour stuff but Scotland Italy obviously the United State like he just he uh now Singapore he just wins all over the world which to me is I think it’s cool I think it is the sign of a great uh Japan he’s won in I think it’s a sign of a really like great player to be able to win in different environments in different countries and I just think that’s that I think that’s an underrated meaningful um he’s now won as many Live Events as he won PGA Tour events like non- Majors what does he have four four oh two two two in the last year and then two previously right yeah which is crazy uh and then the last thing he had this quote I don’t know if I don’t know if Josh has it it’s on my uh I tweeted it out but he he has this quote where he says he was asked like why do you win uh like what is it mentally about you where you win majors and he said um I’m a great ball Striker but also I’m willing to go to a place and I think he said mentally that other guys are not willing to go to which reminds me a little bit of his quote from the writer Cup last year um he he was asked how who really wants the ball down the stretch how many guys really want the ball and he said very few and I thought that I’m willing to go to a place mentally was super interesting that the guy other guys are unwilling to go to here it is I think the big thing that kind of Separates Me is my ability to lock in and go someplace where I think a lot of guys can’t go he’s speaking uh I think ment like the endurance of a of a tournament mentally like staying locked in it’s what we’ve seen Scotty Sheffer really Thrive at recently right where you’re you’re so committed on each and every shot and that drains you it takes a lot out of you which I think is why guys like kka this is sort of what you’re talking about Greg guys like kka kind of go in and out of that he’s the he’s he’s like the ultimate at being able to go in and out of it like yes to be like he goes one into the Spectrum to the other right where he’s like so committed that he I think what he’s talking about is true other guys can’t get to that place mentally and then he’ll go like so uncommitted where you’re watching and you’re like what what’s this guy doing you know yeah we’ll look up and we’ll be like uh is Brooks fat and does he care like and I I wonder if like if that’s the modern formula where like mentally you can only be locked in for so many weeks or whatever a year um but I wish like Sheffer has been displaying that Keo was like that more often because I think it would result in a really like his career is obviously amazing I think it could be more well-rounded in like one of the great modern careers and I just don’t know if it’s going to go that way because of the reasons that Greg mentioned you know um it’s a really interesting thing you mentioned there like how much energy does it take to get to that place and I may have well what do you get there all the time it may be uh wrong of me to say because some guys maybe this is what makes them great like Tiger Woods um can get there all the time they live there and other guys you know maybe five time major Champions can only get there on a couple of occasions still special to get there but maybe it’s not just laziness Maybe it’s really just the challenge of getting there so I I owe him a little credit on that I think it’s hard when he says that get to a place that other guys can’t go to as a competitive player craigg like what is that what is he talking about there like what is that me because I I Rick and I have not played competitively before we’ve not been I mean we’ve been around it in covering golf but we haven’t experienced that do you like does that make sense what he’s saying there yes I think it’s really difficult to describe you know without I don’t know what that place is right I’ve never been to that place but it’s clearly a a zone that you see you we’ve seen Tiger Woods get into that zone we’ve seen Michael Jordan uh live in a Zone like that from time to time where I think you use the word Kyle I think you’re right on the money with it you’re you’re locked in when things go badly and you’re in the mix can you get yourself out of it uh we’ve seen bro we saw Brooks do that at Beth Page black MH can you get on a big boy Golf Course like that and go shoot 63 in the opening round yeah I mean that that’s a really special place to get to so I I think it’s a heavy lift to get to a place like that and when you watch someone like Scotty Sheffer get to a place like that it doesn’t seem like a heavy lift at all MH and for Tiger it felt like a heavy lift but just felt like he could always accomplish it um but that’s what’s so fascinating about Scotty it it feels like he’s treading water and everybody else is swimming in a triathlon it it just it it feels like he can go on forever because it’s not he’s not expending any energy yeah so maybe that’s what separates him um and maybe it’s not a negative thing for Brooks maybe it’s more of an impressive thing that he can kind of flip to switch like that upon occasion he is currently 20 to one to win at Valhalla which is the same odds as Walkin Neeman and Xander Schley that’s ABS that is outrageous that is that is so dumb like who is not like why why is that the case Rick I don’t know um Xander is always uh more he’s always shorter than you’d expect him to be I think that for a lot of sports books he when they do their models and stuff he’s always gonna model really well so they don’t want to get burned on him the nean thing is interesting the only thing that I could assume and I’m only looking at one one book here I’m not I haven’t chopped this around what I what I’m kind of assuming is we are still very early in the cycle and the vast majority of the money is going to come in Monday Tuesday Wednesday of PGA Championship week we’re very very early in the cyle that this book that I’m looking at might have taken an a bigger Advanced bet on wae nean that moved it to that point but I I I think that as we get closer money starts coming in we see kind of that weak of reset I imagine Brooks I mean I would hope Brooks is gonna end up being like 14 to one in like the third shortest odds behind or maybe the fourth behind Scotty Roy ROM like that that r yeah I I I I mean he should be the second favorite I don’t really disagree I don’t think I don’t know how you could he should be the second favorite I I mean I also I don’t see any way around it I also tried to make Wills zorus the favorite at the Masters like three weeks before the Masters so don’t don’t listen to me hey he finished top 10 uh our bets for this week we are on we’ve got momentum just kind of in the wrong direction our Wagers we did not find a winner I had Alex soring close but no cigar you don’t get paid for that Patrick had Sebastian Soderberg on the DP World Tour who led after two rounds this event was short into three rounds because they canceled the third round Soderberg didn’t win so that that’s no good that’s un that’s tough uh we did get some green via Kyle plus 250 Jordan Speed to miss the cut you were all over that heck yeah and then Greg carried us here Benny on over Jason day that was uh pretty easy yeah Jason day nearly missed the cut should have missed the cut should have missed the cut made like a 40f footer and where did he finish on the week yeah 59 n or something yeah and then you add Alex noren plus 130 to finish top 20 that he did yeah EAS and gets you the gets you the win there I was going back and forth you see joer in my outright um I was going back and forth with you know norin like switching those guys back and forth between columns um and it it wouldn’t have made a difference either way jger finished T20 as well so um it would have been the same either way their number was about the same maybe 120 for Jagger 135 they they were about the same so yeah it worked out we also follow that up with a pair of Peter Quest top 30s he missed the cut Tom hogi finished inside the top 20 he finished t41 and then Patrick went with John ROM to win in Singapore he finished 10th so those are all losers I I’ll defend this this bet I think hogi was first in the field in ball striking and last in putting I believe that is correct I saw that his putting number was was horrible I know he was I know he was last in putting he was F he was like top three in ball striking yeah yeah as usual as usual the one and done wasn’t a ton of Bloodshed here uh the three that went with Stephen Jagger Mark Greg and Patrick got $112,000 Greg you’re the only one here to represent the trio happy or not happy with that ah you know what these events you got to win to really make like a significant move so it’s probably not the best we could have done with Stephen joerger throughout the rest of the year but it’s it’s fine it’s it’s such a terrible answer but it’s right in the middle Josh had Adam Scott 52,000 Kyle had Tom hogi we’ve discussed t41 33,000 I had Sun JM who withdrew after the tournament start started and before he teed off so I get zero which is yeah sunj sick it’s awesome literally he yeah so I’m 30 what is that like $3,500 behind Josh oh wow so wait you are that is tight all right so I’m disappointed in Stephen Jagger very disappointed yeah you’re $3500 35 20 that is tight that is tight wow very good uh we will update where when Ren your pool updates for the Byron Nelson we’ll have the updated numbers for everybody uh next week so we’ll see how that goes I don’t know how many people had Taylor pendrith guess I could have looked that up how did Mark get to the top who did he who who were his winners was it Scotty at the Players I think so yeah he had that but there was someone else he had like two wins I think Josh and I think had Scotty at the Players as well did he mayi I don’t remember well I mean he they weren’t both from Scotty and Scotty’s won everything so probably had joerger the other week or did he have a he might have had a second did he have like a JT Poston I thought he had a won R this when who won re River oh Riv I thought you said live I’m like what are you talking about um uh Hideki did he have did he have that I thought he had something on the west he had okay so he had more he had can’t lay at Heritage how much was that worth second that that was that’s couple mil sweet anything else jent what a note to end on uh no let’s go enjoy enjoy our Sunday nights game seven in the NHL go nights go as they say I was supposed to go that’s probably a hot ticket I got an invite from one of my buddies and uh I had to turn it down had to cover the Byron Nelson oh should have went that would be electric yeah it’s gonna be insane wow okay well we’ll watch it on TV instead um we’ll be back next week for not one but two events Wells Fargo Championship Myrtle Beach Classic Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday yes uh big thanks to producer Josh does all the hard work behind the scenes Greg du charm at the real gfd Kyle Porter Kyle Porter CBS you can find me at Rick run good this has been the first cut we’ll catch you next time [Music]

  1. I got Brooks at 22/1 last year for The Masters AND The PGA Championship – AND The US Open even after he won the PGA 🤣 For some unknown bizarre reason, Brooks odds always seem to be in the 20/1 range….the guy has won 5 majors ffs but seemingly people would rather piss their money away on Rory year after year instead and last year Scheffler ended up winning 0 majors but always had shorter odds than Brooks. Scheffler's wife being pregnant ready to pop it out soon might affect his mindset at the PGA…..

  2. Guys I cashed out my 1 dollar 90:1 Pendrith ticket for $20 right before Kohles chunked it when he was -500 to win. Right move but ughhhh

  3. This was an interesting week on the media side of things. I mean this tournament was able to cross the finish line. PGA Tour Champions that was 2 1/2 hours to the south couldnt finish. It was the 3rd of 9 tournaments where mother nature messed up things. Jake Knapp got exposed BIG time today. I know he won Mexico but that course is so big where you can have a c or a d game and still win. Ben collasped for sure. That tee shot on 17 hit the rough he couldnt lift clean a place. 18 was 545 and everybody got home in 2. Ben should have gotten to -24 if not force a playoff at -23. It was still a good week for Ben and Taylor. Ben went from 154-67 in fed ex with 377 pts. He got in Wells Fargo 4th. Taylor went from 91 to 34 and has a 2 year exemption.

  4. I think Knapp could be inconsistent because of his swing, and put Wolff in the same basket. Noren did really well here at a birdie fest. B An good too. Over on LIV, Brooks is back, and Rahm isnt.

  5. Yes a lot of people dont realize Brookes did his time on the European tour where he was first known as big hitting but a bit loose. Good on him.

  6. I don't know if I trust Brooks to win at Valhalla. He seems to be shaping up, but it's so difficult to tell with Brooks sometimes. I'm sure he'll play well for much of the tournament, but is he really going to win a fourth PGA? I agree he should be the favorite after Scottie, though.

The funny thing about the Tour de France, is that I've read that race has become so long and demanding, it's basically impossible to complete without performance enhancing drugs. So people rail on Lance Armstrong for using steroids, but the thing is all those guys are using it. Because they'd rather not have to withdraw halfway into it, or you know, die during the race without the steroids. If you're going to demand that athletes not use performance aids, you also have to make sure your sport is something sane, and achievable.

Just in chat, there was a guy demanding not to mention Armstrong because he's a cheater. Well, if you take out all of the guys and girls from racing who use performance steroids, you'll be left with what – 1 or 2 people, at most? Lol. You can't do it. For better or worse, that is the race. Hellishly insane.
