The Atlanta Falcons spent big on free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins who is 36-years old. They’re likely going to lose draft picks for the tampering charges levied against them after signing him. They backed Cousins with drafting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington with the No. 8 pick in the NFL Draft. No matter how you slice it, it’s hard to make the combination of those moves make sense. Scott Kennedy and Nick Kendell get into it on the Falcons Podcast.

good morning fam we are live on the Falcons podcast on YouTube we’re going to bring in our Facebook groups as well buckle your seat Bel y’all we’re going to get into it it is the day after the draft and what can only be described as a shocking first round for the Atlanta Falcons welcome in everybody this is the morning after the NFL draft on the Falcons podcast and this is the morning after episode last night you got a little bit of the gut reaction you got the gut reaction as we were streaming live during the draft and when the Falcons stunned the World by selecting uh Michael penx with the number eight overall pick stunned all the Falcons fans with the number eight pick in the NFL draft my initial response was pretty negative it hasn’t gotten any better so slept on it I still can’t come to grips with this pick and we’ll get into the reasons why and it doesn’t necessarily have to do with the pick itself it’s nothing against Michael penx I like Michael penics it has to do with the direction of this team the leadership of this team the construction of this team the expectations of this team are completely mindboggling Nick is going to join us shortly he is uh got some daddy Duty so he’s going to join us at the top of the hour and we’re going to uh we’re going to get into it but I want to get into it with y’all we go live every Monday Wednesday and Friday uh 8:30ish every day and we do do so because we like having uh I like having the conversation with y’all uh I haven’t slept in two days I’ve got up on the couch and watched a Braves game on replay because that helps calm my brain and helps me go to sleep so thank goodness for lion coffee our partner uh lion coffee.com to keep us going because when I start getting into debates into justification in this my mind goes wild I try and come up with every single possible argument for and against it’s like playing chess you want to see where everybody’s coming from and my mind just spins on this so I’ve been spinning on it a lot and I know there will be some people and I’ve seen those arguments because the comments I I I posted last night the comments are in the hundreds already on the gut reaction video and there’s some good Arguments for drafting Michael Pennock I get that we’ll get into it I still don’t back the move that’s why I changed it a little bit the title for this is Atlanta Falcons quarterback plan still makes little sense why because every single justification for Michael penx indicates that signing Kirk Cousins was a mistake you can be for Kirk for uh for Michael penx okay I get it you can say signing Kurt Cousins was a good idea you can’t do both I cannot justify that on my brain I cannot get them to come together and we will be uh we will be getting into it John Brook says coming in uh first this morning we we built this pretty early and he was in nice and early he says Scott it’s being reported that Kurt Cousins is upset he was never given a heads up about the Michael penck pick Kurt Cousins says he was never told about the pick at all not quite true on that one as far as uh what he was told the report was was from Diana Rini we’ve got it up at all fans.com Daniel flick wrote it up last night kids of machine by the way um that they found out while they were on the clock hey’re we’re taking a quarterback okay would you be upset about that does he have any right to be upset about that well Kinda Yeah uh would Kurt Cousins have signed with the Atlanta Falcons for what is not overly expensive $25 million uh dollars guaranteed this year for his uh cap hit this year 40 next year what do you have signed with the Atlanta Falcons if you knew you were taking a quarterback at number eight you’ve signed my successor before I even take a snap am already a lame duck quarterback if I struggle at all the cries for 24 year-old Michael pennx are going to be pretty loud in using that number eight pick he’s a lame duck before he even takes a snap would he have come to Atlanta you come here to win I want you to invest as much as possible into the team to win this is not a win now move it’s just not so Kirk Cousins has a right to be a little miffed if you feel like you have been misled by your k current employer already we’ll get into that one too Atlanta Connor ATL Conor says I wonder if KT feels like he’s going to get replaced well of course he is he’s 36 two years guaranteed that you’re expecting because he wants to play he wants to be on the field but he does not like the decision of grabbing a quarterback and I’m not telling about at all um you know ATL says I’d be mad too he didn’t come to Atlanta for just money I mean the money helps he’s getting he’s well compensated nobody’s going to cry tears for Kurt C cousins but we’ve all been in that situation where you feel misled and I think the Falcons fans feel like they’ve been misled this is a win now team we’re going after a 36- year old quarterback with 90 million guaranteed we are forsaking many of our other needs in free agency like Edge like cornerback 2 like wide receiver 2 well you say Darnell Mooney Rond Del Moore might be you’re fors the big needs at Edge to spend big money on a quarterback okay well we’re in it we’re going to win now now we’re going to go get defense or build onto this team in the NFL draft uh or or maybe not so one of the quotes that uh that came out of this was Terry fno talking about you know if he doesn’t play right away the the Green Bay Packers model we’ll get into that one too cuz I can tear that one to shreds with uh with him sitting and not playing right away and and and Michael penck not playing right away okay uh I’m not overly worried about the age okay he’s 24 if you don’t start till he’s 26 okay if I get 10 years of good quarterback play from 26 to 36 that’s actually 11 Seasons I’m pretty happy I am I’m not I don’t worry so much about oh he’s old already I I really don’t if he can play he can play if he can play he’ll play for a decade if he can play for a decade it’s worth a number eight overall that’s fine when you when you have belief in a player you can’t pass that up said font no uh let me see that one’s that one’s a little that’s fine I get that one um scroll down here a little bit if you believe in a quarterback you have to take him font said at his press conference last night if he sits for four or five years that’s a great problem to have because we’re doing so well at the position my God man okay I’m GNA draft this guy and if I don’t play him it’s awesome because I didn’t need him you didn’t need him why’d you draft him well we went ah hedge and make sure that we’re really good you aren’t really good you’re seven and 10 you’re drafting in the top 10 three consecutive years you haven’t been in the playoffs in Seven Seasons you’re not really good you’re not the Green Bay Packers coming off a 13 and three year my goodness he doesn’t play it for four or five years have you ever heard of the term opportunity cost look at the Players you passed on man do you think they could have helped do you think the Green Bay Packers model worked out for them when they’ve got a back-to-back MVP in a 13 and3 season and they don’t go to the Super bowlt because Aaron roggers doesn’t have enough help in the playoffs what a first round pick at another position helped them who would you rather be the Green Bay Packers and out in the playoff where would you rather have gone for it and be the LA Rams win it all and then slide back I know which Falcons fans would rather have having never won a Super Bowl you’d give it all you you’d have you would trade three consecutive two and 15 Seasons if it meant you’d get a Super Bowl you would absolutely let’s say hello to some folks that are coming in on the chat coach is coming he says morning studs he’s offering up the coffee I haven’t even had a sip of coffee yet if you can believe that first sip of coffee God knows what I’m going to be like by the time I get to the bottom of that uh of of my press here it uh I might just combust waren Scott says Scott I’m sorry listen I don’t fan like I used to by any stretch of the imagination okay but when I see things that don’t make sense that upset this community that I’ll be passionate about it absolutely giving Kirk Cousins $90 million guaranteed over two years and then drafting a quarterback at eight does not make sense you can tell me because every argument I’ve seen every argument I’ve seen for Michael Pennock is against the signing of Kurt Cousins and I’m not advocating for either one of them oh you’re just a kurk cousins Fanboy no I’m not but that move has already been made you have already made that move when we started talking about the options at quarterback for this Atlanta Falcons team there is no spot in the world where we said spend $90 million guaranteed on Kurt Cousins and use your number eight pick on a quarterback no no Russell Wilson and a rookie I love that idea how about Justin fields how about trading a fifth round pick for Justin Fields if you’re looking for a bridge quarterback because you love this quarterback class at 8 and you could get Michael pennix at eight there was no doubt about that there were three guys maybe four going in the top five you’re sitting at eight there was no risk of losing Michael penx if you love Michael pennx you don’t sign Kurt Cousins get Michael penx I’m okay with that get a different Bridge get bis this is a great pick Kurt Cousins is nothing more than a bridge who’s budgeting this bridge the L the Los Angeles County uh Tax Commissioner is the California state government doing the budgeting for this 90 million Bridge no go get Russell Wilson go get Justin Fields go get Ryan tanel go get Joe Kobe brassett if you want to build for the future build for the future not got a 24 year old quarterback who’s been really good as a starter start him he’s going to be an upgrade over what had last year anyway did you get better is Michael penx better than Desmond Ritter by God he better be he better be with better quarterback play it was a playoff team last year you don’t spend 90 million guaranteed you know what could you know what got who got 90 million guaranteed denil Hunter and Jonathan greenard combined the top two edges in this class give me Jonathan greenard and denal Hunter and this free agency class instead of Kurt Cousins and draft Michael Pennock oh and we’re singing a whole different song the day after the first round appreciate you coach uh ladim man 94 says uh Saints didn’t get penck so it’s actually a good move by default I think it’s clear the Falcons were scared by uh what they had with Ritter and Mariota again every single argument you have for penics tells me you’re already admitting to a mistake in signing Kurt Cousins before he’s ever taken a snap one of these moves was moronic which one you’re a [ __ ] either way okay if you like the Michael penck pick okay don’t sign don’t sign Kirk Cousins it’s moronic to do both I’m not advocating for Kirk Cousins I’m not putting down the move for uh for Michael pennx the two of them combined make makes zero sense for where this team is so yes Lon and again the idea argument if this move works out and you’ve got your franchise quarterback then it’s worth it you say that about every single draft pick you take there’s risk involved in every single pick if this move works out Dallas Turner was a was a reach at eight but if he turns into the next Micah Parson’s off the edge then it’s a great pick yeah if but if but we I get it okay that’s not what this process is all about so were the Saints the Raiders gonna get penic if you like penx you don’t sign Kurt Cousins it’s just that simple it really is for me Edward Brown comes in and he’s talking about the confusion thank you for the Super Chat my friend he says I thought the signing of Kurt Cousins we were in win now mode maybe maybe let’s just we think we should be okay we should we should win some games Kirt cousins on this team last year and it’s probably a 10 and seven Team 11- Six are they Super Bowl contenders probably not last year would they have been this year they would be in the argument we’ve talked about this the over under on wins for this team I think is 10 and a half so 11 and six you’re in the discussion and anything can happen in the playoffs why not draft a player that can help you win now Edward Brown I don’t know I really don’t unless you are admitting you have already made a colossal mistake in signing Kirk Cousins people are forgetting that Kirk Cousins is 36 years old and coming off an Achilles injury and declining and he wasn’t that great to be those are all arguments why it was stupid to sign him you can’t justify Michael pennx without saying stupid to sign Kurt Cousins you cannot do it can’t and I’m not saying it was stupid to sign Kurt Cousins I’m not saying it was stupid to draft Michael penx again I’m saying it was stupid to do both that’s where I am on that one Edward Brown he follows back up so once penx takes a field JY talking about his fifth year option fifth year option on a quarterback was what because the uh the Pittsburgh Steelers just declined the fifth year option no kidding on Justin Fields the uh his fifth year option and it will be up because it’ll be in four years from now was 25. 6 million $25.6 million I think Kurt Cousins gets two years and then you eat 25 million doll in dead cap and if he plays so well that you want him to play keep playing on that contract at $50 million in 2026 again you’ve wasted a pick for a guy that for the opportunity cost of who you passed up you better hope romad dun is a bust we’re watching we are watching in we are watching Dallas Turner We are watching terion Arnold we are watching Byron Murphy we are watching romad dun we are watching Caleb McGary if I’m looking long term how about offensive tackle in an offensive tackle loaded class how about that how about Caleb McGary being a Turn Style and pass protection through most of his career even when he was playing well in a run based offense how about Jake Matthews turning 32 years old and being really really expensive how about that for long-term thinking in this draft for a guy that could help you right now I could I could do both Edward I could get a long-term investment in a position of need and a guy that could help me right now in a deep draft of offensive tackles and he says can you tell I’m pissed can you tell I’m pissed can you tell I’m pissed for you it doesn’t make any sense it makes zero sense it really doesn’t Nick Nick Sutton comes in he says we better draft all defense today the problem Nick Edge rushers go in the first they just do now I think you can still get corner I think you can still get DL you can get Braden Fisk in here you still need a wide receiver too speaking of overpays we kind of played this down a little bit because okay so be it not necessarily a position of need but Darnell Mooney had what 400 yards last year and he got a12 million contract 12 half million contract for a 400 yard receiver you can’t tell me I can’t get a receiver in the second round that would get 400 yards in this offense $12 million I spent 20 I spent 90 guaranteed on my quarterback and I spent 12 million this year so I got 37 A5 million doll poured into darn Al Mooney and um and Kurt Cousins this year what is that number jump to next year for those two I already know the number is 40 on Kurt Cousins and Darnell money let’s see where his number is I have to do contrl F his uh his guaranteed money was I think it was 25 $26 million guaranteed so it’s two years his cap number jumps from s to 14 and a half next year s to 14 and a half and you’ve got to pay it because he’s on a $19 million Deb so next year I’ve got 14 a half million dollar I’ve got 40 I’ve got $55 million tied into Kirk Cousins and Darnell Mooney and I went with a quarterback who wouldn’t have cost me much and I could go in a deep wide receiver class and I wouldn’t have spent any of that free agent money I could have poured it into the defense zero sense I have been dogging on Thomas demitro for his unbalanced teams for a decade this is what worse this is worse at least when I overspend it wide receiver on one of those guys I draft Calvin Ridley I spend a boatload of picks on Julio Jones at least I can put all those guys on the field at one time I didn’t draft a backup quarterback good Lord rusty Moore Jr says thank you for the Super Chat my friend uh he says Terry font was a nice guy but that doesn’t make him a good GM for Dra for draft four bad picks Terry is not the guy uh or this that Super Bowl in 2017 gave this organization brain damage I think it may have started when the Packers hung 50 on the Falcons and what was that 2011 following the 2010 they were 13 and three that’s when some of these moves started going Packers hung 50 on us and we didn’t force him to punt let’s trade five picks for a wide receiver we just spent 90 million on a 36 year old quarterback we’ve got holes all over our defense we just lost our defensive coordinator let’s draft another quarterback it it it doesn’t make any sense we’ll get into the Packers model with Nick Nick’s gonna be here in just a couple minutes he texts me he should be here in just a couple minutes we’ll get into the Packers discussion and the Jordan love discussion and how stupid that is in just a minute I’m gonna have to try not to hurt Nick’s feelings because he’ll take one side of the argument and I don’t want to call I’m stupid Drew Griner grineer Griner help me out though that looks like grinder to me uh Drew thank you for the support my friend I hope you’re doing well he says penx was picked for the future but we all know the fan base on day one is going to be calling to throw him in now anytime a mistake is made he was picked for the future kurk cousin was signed to win now make those make sense as Quinton says this pick makes no sense in a vacuum the pick makes sense okay a quarterback of the future is a good thing your quarterback is 36 years old why are you complaining that you you drafted a quarterback of the future Scott good question because I didn’t need to have a 36- year- old quarterback on $90 million guaranteed that was a conscious decision made six weeks ago and oh by the way I’m gonna lose draft picks too we tampered to do it that’s me in the free in the front office that’s another argument I’ve seen maybe the front office knows they’re about to get hammered for the tampering charges so they want to make sure they can get their quarterback now because they’re not going to be able to because they’re going to lose picks that’s another admission that signing Kirk Cousins was moronic that’s another one you can’t do it you cannot give me an argument that doing both of these moves was the right thing to do I can listen to one I can listen to the other the two move them together well you see I’m got sweat be sweat beaten up on my forehead now so thank you drew he says and then Quinton says this pick makes no sense let me hop over into my Facebook groups I uh I’ve hit the the super Chatters they a little bit easier to see I see Keith and Ellen Johnson he’s come in already um he uh appreciate you says uh I just don’t get it if you choose one or the other you can’t do both it’s so frustrating wait until next year again this team will be better this this team is still possibly a playoff caliber team if they can get some defense that’s that’s the thing you lose Kus Campbell you need a safety safety we talked day day two even day three for safety we talked quarterback two on day two I get it what about your pass rush man where where’s your Edge rusher on this okay well we didn’t believe in Dallas Turner well well Dallas Turner at 8 would have been a reach fine trade back how many times do we say trade back during the the Minnesota was willing to come they weren’t willing to deal with us well who was there were teams willing to move around trade back I I I don’t get this hesitancy for that’s four years in a row Rusty you talk about four drafts four bad picks now I would say that the pick that probably was the best pick of the four so far would be Drake London you’ve got value uh the value position you’ve got a really good player and Drake London now my problem with the Drake London pick was one you still had no idea what you were going to do at quarterback so why are you taking receivers and there were a bunch of wide receivers available in that draft class so um I think he was the first of like four or five guys to go in a row um Let me let me check 20 uh 20 2 the 2022 draft but you had your pick again Falcons had their pick of defensive players they had Roma dun if you wanted to go with another stud wide receiver and I can justify taking another stud wide receiver when wide receivers are getting $30 million in free agency I I can absolutely justify that but the the the problem I had with the Drake London pick other than you who’s your quarterback why are you taking receivers is Garrett Wilson goes at 10 Chris Olaf goes at 11 Jameson Williams goes at 12 Johan doson goes at 16 trayon Burks kind of a bus there at 18 and then again I love wide receivers in the second round you got Christian Watson from the Packers um that was my guy there and that was uh and George Pickins and Alec Pierce those were all second round wide receivers that I love this draft is full of wide receivers that I love in the second round so again you go with two non- premium positions a wide receiver first amongst a bunch of wide receivers when you don’t have your quarterback and now a quarterback when you’ve got your quarterback and you just spent big on a 36- year old guy with a small window with a short window man I get Darius Mayfield Darius Mayfield $10 for a chill pill here let me take a sip for the chill pill thank you for the uh the perspective Darius dude take a breath take a breath yeah thank you like I said I get fired up you can see why I haven’t slept I get fired up when we start talking about this stuff trying to justify the nonsense that we’ve seen I do I get fired up and this move just makes no sense in the more I thought well it’ll sleep on it you’ll feel better the hell I will I uh this this the more I thought about it you know then other arguments start coming in where people start you know they’re fandom everybody’s going to there’s going to be people out there that will justify any move made there’s millions of Falcons fans someone just to be a contrarian will come in and say this is a great move and this is the reasons why I I get it the the counterarguments to any move for Michael penck is Kurt Cousins it just doesn’t make any sense to spend 90 million on Kurt Cousins at 36 years old if you loved a quarterback well they didn’t know they loved the quarterback until they got to the NFL combine and the meetings and the pro days and all that kind of stuff well that’s on you then then you’re doing a poor job of evalu ating you should be all in on these quarterbacks and have a pretty damn good idea who they are and done background searches on all of them well before free agency well before free agency so thank you Darius for the perspective Keith bugman comes in with some stars on Facebook he says maybe Terry fno was working off his old mock draft from January accident maybe uh maybe it’s uh again like I said it’s it’s really really hard to uh to justify that so what isn’t hard to justify for me real quick again is lion coffee I’m I’m barely into this cup and I’m this fired up so the caffeine hasn’t even kicked in yet but thank God for our partners at lion coffee because it’s been uh I I’ve been Downing this stuff during the day because I haven’t been sleeping and uh love the coffee and they are a partner of the podcast so you can check them out of of the Falcons podcast you can check them out at lion coffee.com there’s a link in the description and also the code for 20% off everything on their site except 100% Kona or cases everything else go Falcons 20 go Falcon 20 because this is still a season to be excited about and you can start your day midday or finish your day like we do at the Falcons podcast with Lion coffee it’s freaking delicious I love the company and uh I’m I’m proud that they’re a partner of the Falcons podcast um John Brothers again uh I get this here’s another Super Chat he comes in he says uh maybe this is a contingency against kurk cousins getting injured again or that his Achilles isn’t as good you know it was in bad shape you know maybe it’s it’s worse than we thought it he’s he’s gonna take some time to get back into it okay again John that is a argument against Kirt cousins that is an argument for saying they it’s a mistake to sign Kurt Cousins if I immediately need to hedge on my $90 million guaranteed quarterback by taking a quarterback top 10 in the draft I shouldn’t have signed Kirk Cousins shouldn’t have that that’s I I should have signed Kirk Cousins and dropped a Lloyds of London insurance policy on them that’s what I should do I shouldn’t have signed Kirk Cousins that’s what this move screams so any any single dis discussion you have that is pro Michael penck and there’s reasons to be Pro Michael penx he’s got a first round Talent arm he absolutely does it screams you wasted the opportunity to improve your team in free agency because you dropped 90 million guaranteed on a 36y old quarterback coming off an injury that’s what this is about it’s not about Michael pennix was a bad pick it’s not about that Kirk Cousins uh was was was bad it’s that the combination the signal it sends out by doing both of them is that we made a mistake we made a mistake with Kurt Cousins and we’re really not serious about trying to win now we’re trying to think 10 years down the line then you don’t sign a 36- year old quarterback to 90 million again so um let me see on here uh Nick Nick’s coming in he’s almost ready to go I appreciate the super John but again like I said every single argument for Mike P Michael penic is an argument against Kurt Cousins there’s just no way for me to to make those moves make sense and say yeah this is the right move well your quarterback room is solid now most most teams because there’s so many resources dumped into the quarterback position with the money you know $90 million most teams are in trouble if they lose their starting quarterback and this isn’t a team that was a quarterback away that that that’s the point for me this isn’t a team the the Packers model worked okay the Packers were 13 and three when they drafted Jordan love and then Rogers went on and had back-to-back MVP Seasons they were 13 and three and they missed their window this isn’t a team that has that luxury this is a team that hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2017 they don’t have the luxury of let’s just take another guy let’s stack up the quarterback room because everything else is good you’re not good you haven’t been in the playoff in six or seven years Nick give me a thumbs up you ready to jump in all right here he is Nick Kendall Nick is going to breathe some levity in here I’ve been breathing fire Nick I I actually got a uh I got a a Super Chat saying dude chill sleeping on it Nick didn’t help my overall my Twitter post on this basically for this move and I titled this atlana Falcons quarterback plan still makes little sense the morning after it still makes little sense my over all on this isn’t that Michael penx was a bad pick it’s that any pro Michael penx argument is an admission that it was stupid to sign Kirk Cousins to 90 million one of these moves was stupid and if you do a stupid move then you made a moronic move own it which one is it that’s the argument I’m having this morning with myself yeah again I think there can be Arguments for it to line up cousins is older he’s coming off an Achilles injury and if they evaluated pennx as a superstar Blue Chip caliber quarterback prospect and you don’t expect to be picking in the top 10 in the next three years given you know comp coaching competency hopefully uh better obviously overall roster not a really talented NFC South there can be arguments uh for that there but I’m with you overall it doesn’t really seem to align and it it feels like it gets worse and worse uh the more fno and Morris and everybody talk you know it’s like ideally penx won’t start until you know the end of his rookie contract what is he going to be is he going to be collecting a ARP checks by then I mean a 20 I mean I guess I could hear it for you know 21y old uh JJ McCarthy or something like that but for panic I just I don’t understand I guess they they obviously fell in love with the guy over time but then the whole dynamic now with Kurt Cousins and you know paying him and not letting him know until like you’re literally on the clock it’s uh it’s a weird situation and I guess uh Scott we we really are you mentioned it before the show that some sort of soon as you and I started doing the shows together the Broncos and the Falcons are like tight at the hip or like some weird torment there a Synergy there where things just just kind of happen Addison comes in with a super sticker I appreciate it and Nick did did you hear yourself as you started talking about the pick what did you start doing when you started talking about okay I can see where the the Michael penx thing makes sense maybe if because if because what you went right into hedging against Kurt Cousins yeah maybe Kurt Cousins the injury the age etc etc again all of that just goes to scream signing Kurt Cousins to 90 million guaranteed was a mistake I I cannot and and you didn’t just now I even LED you into that you didn’t justify saying that both of these moves together were the right thing to do for this team it’s just hard to say now one thing I will give again just trying to play devil’s advocate here because I’m with you guys trying to work my way through the logic here um I’m very much a logic based uh individual and and when I see The Logical I get pissed the I don’t think we would make it this long if I was constantly not following logic but the processes of evaluating these guys happen on two different timelines right so the a lot of the S Kirk Cousins you have a chance to get him in here he’s a good fit your coaching staff likes him great you bring him in now you’re evaluating the quarterbacks because it’s due diligence and boom Oh my gosh we love Michael penck uh we’re gonna have a chance at him we think he has a chance to be a franchise caliber quarterback we don’t expect to be up here again next year so again there’s so many contingencies to get to that point I understand that I wouldn’t have made that move I’m guessing I probably I mean how many times we do the simulator and we never took a quarterback after Kurt Cousins of course at least in the first round not in the first round no and we took Ro romad dun time and time again I mean we’re on adun watch there Dallas Turner watch Byron Murphy watch tradeback watch uh for not just you know the Falcons but the Broncos as well sitting there at 12 for a couple of those guys but uh it’s uh it is an interesting pick now you mentioned it Michael penx he’s gone through unbelievable amount of adversity um in his career uh the injuries playing at a very I mean outside of ruter I don’t know if there’s a team in the Big 10 that is as consistent pathetic as Indiana um and he made Indiana look pretty good um I know that Co season he uh threw two pick sixes against Iowa and got benched because he was so terrible against Iowa but Iowa’s defense has made that happen to lesser teams so I’m not too worried about that and then goes to Washington and kind of a weird system uh but goes out there and shows the Howitzer finishes second for the Heisman this last year and uh takes Washington to Heights that they haven’t been to since what 1996 maybe I I they won the national championship at some point uh split one they split one yeah back in the day right the voters of the newspaper um they they know what’s best but uh yeah it’s a uh it’s hard to process uh that pick especially because I mean with the the Bon Nick stuff I didn’t think personally bonu was worth the 12th pick obviously the Broncos feel different and God I hope they’re right uh but it didn’t feel as blindsided or like not making as much sense as the Michael penck stuff with the Falcons it just it doesn’t align with your window I I it’s just it’s an inter it’s an interesting move that’s for sure that’s an interesting move yeah can you trade next year after you lose your pick for tampering uh you that’s fine so number eight are you gonna get a top 10 pick for Michael penx next year no no way no how Jeremy I love you Jeremy but I’m gonna have to keep be speaking my truth and we’ll see how it works out because he’s uh Nick you didn’t think penx was worth a 12th pick I probably would have traded back and I heard Broncos had some moves on the table and it was split in the uh the O’s room Shawn Payton got his guy it’s on him um hopefully he gets it right so and again Ryan andonis coming here didn’t penx whip K whip Caleb Williams it is a team game and again when I watched Michael penx in Oregon again this isn’t necessarily about Ryan if you’re coming in a little bit late I want to reiterate here the argument for Michael penck and there’s good ones I I like it it’s me you throw back you watch him throw the ball you’re like yes that’s a first round arm I get it but every argument you make for Michael penck is an argument against signing free agent K cousins if you wanted to tell me that you wanted Michael penck in the draft and we need a bridge okay go get jacobe brassette just go sign Ryan Tanny Hill go go trade for Russell Wilson get Russell Wilson on $2 million that was something we advocated for that was actually my number one choice this year going in before the the I think Kurt Cousins was probably about my number four choice of options for the Atlanta Falcons my number one choice was Russell Wilson and a and a rookie that was my number one Justin Fields could have been had for a fifth would have come to Atlanta and played on that and then you got okay we got Justin fields on a one-year deal and you take and you hedge him with Michael pennx because it didn’t cost you anything to get Justin Fields okay that makes sense well then if Michael penx doesn’t play because Justin fields did so well so be it didn’t cost me anything to get Justin Fields so I used a first- round pick I didn’t use a first round a top 10 pick and $90 million on a guy I’m only going to have for two years because he’s 36 yeah that doesn’t make any sense I can argue for Michael Pennock I can argue for Kirk Cousins I cannot argue for them both if I wanted a quarterback I should have spent free agency building up the rest of my team not on quarterback and Nick I right before you came on I mentioned the timeline on here you know okay well before I spend 90 million if I wanted Michael penx I shouldn’t have spent 90 million on Kirt cousins well I didn’t know I wanted Michael penx until I went to the NFL combine till I went to Pro days um till I went to you know something else like that well they did have the Senior Bowl they got a chance to talk with the guys down there if you didn’t know that going into free agency before you drop $90 million of Arthur blank’s money shame on you shame on you if you don’t know these kids before you’re willing to drop nine figures on a 36- year old quarterback if you don’t have a pretty good idea who these guys are by then shame on you and shame on your scouting department so I’m not having that I’m just not not their money right and if Arthur Blank endorses it either way then uh you know he can he really wants to win a championship and he put those people in power to make those choices but again I keep coming back to the interpersonal relationship stuff here I mean sounds like Kirk Cousins was blindsided by it and pretty shocked by it and I’m curious to see if we get you know vengeful Kirk Cousins is this is there talk in the background that the Achilles is worse than we thought would you should you have paid him all that guaranteed money if so which is another argument that signing Kurt Cousins A90 million was moronic yeah again one of them is moronic which one take your pick yeah and we’re we’re obviously having to speculate because we don’t have every tidbit of information but we’re having to speculate because we have to try to put order into this because it just doesn’t feel order Scott I know you’ve been on the the uh anti on this like most people are without a doubt give me your cleanest take on how this makes sense and how it works out for the Falcons there has to be a lot is how it makes sense is something’s wrong something’s wrong with Kirt cousins that’s how it makes sense and you basically already blew $90 million that that’s how it makes sense it’s the only thing I can come up with that year that it was a mistake the otherwise the only justifications you can make for spending $90 million on a 36 year old quarterback and then drafting a guy number eight is you’ve lost your mind I mean that that’s that’s that’s the only thing it’s like again every single discussion here is against for for Michael penck and there like I said there’s lots of good reasons I like Michael Pennock sign to Neil Hunter then off get get your Edge get your Edge in free agency Michael pennx and denil Hunter I’m interested Michael penck denil Hunter and Jonathan greenard you know who got $90 million uh in guaranteed money Nick in free agency no one Jonathan greenard and denil Hunter combined yeah sign those two as your book bookend edges and draft Michel penx okay now we’re freaking talking but doubling up on that at the same position not having it gadx boy says red Kirk’s contract is basically two years 100 million in Minnesota paid 28.5 million because of the Dead cap so two years 71 million for a starting quarterback isn’t bad there your numbers are a little off on this it’s 90 million guaranteed um and his cap number isn’t bad it’s two it’s 25 million this year which isn’t that bad and it’s 40 next year which still isn’t that bad that’s 65 million that leaves $25 million in dead cap if you move on from him the Minnesota Vikings have dead cap money because they had void years in the contract so they’re not they’re not picking up any of that money it’s 90 million guaranteed 25 million 40 million then you can move on in two years and you would take a $25 million dead cap hit spread 12 and a half across two years on a $300 million cap it’s not that much KT Cousins contract isn’t that much but again it’s the opportunity cost what could I have done with those resources if I was going to invest in a quarterback at eight if I was going to if I was going to get a quarterback and again I had time to spend with Michael pennx at the Senior Bowl I got to watch him for three days down there in January a month before free agency opens doesn’t make any sense it really doesn’t here’s my question does Kirk cousin son with the Atlanta Falcons if he tells them there signing a they’re going to draft a quarterback at number eight no I don’t think so uh you’d think that spending all that money that in level investment on him is a commitment and you are in a with a 36- year old quarterback in a shortterm window and that was a big thing I mean I know a lot of people in here were like well what about after cousins you don’t got to worry about I said that many times on here you know three years as an eternity in the NFL so we’ll worry about that when we cross that bridge but I guess Arthur Blank was tired of the quarterback you know know Carousel and look to double down on the position and hopefully never have to invest in the position again for as long as he’s you know live ticking yeah that’s not to be morbid uh but uh you know that’s uh I guess that’s one of the things you think about there with this uh Tyler Eckles comes in says I hate it still shocked clearly blank wanted to win now but he didn’t know Terry or Rob will be there come on Isaac Ellis cornerback talking about the next guys here I’m sure we’ll do a u a day two mock here at some point uh for the Falcons but for now we’re still trying to put together the pieces as far as the the F Falcons and the Fallout Scott obviously if we can put on our GM GM hat too if you were on the clock there would you just have taken romad dun obviously there was some talk about I think this comment has more to do with day two honestly but uh thank you so much for the Super Chat Nick but what would you have done there obviously if you were in charge I would have tried to trade back um and I probably would have gone with one of the edge Rush The Edge rusher I had highest the board I probably would have gone that direction again I could justify for this team for building longterm I could justify taking an offensive tackle the offensive tackle to me was kind of the off-the-wall pick wait a minute you’ve got two starting offensive tackles why do you need a third you know that’s the light discussion you know like Miller Light not as in Miller fat that’s like Coke Zero version of this discussion of hedging of doubling up on what is a strength is if you had gone offensive tackle in that spot and maybe they would have if two didn’t go right before him I doubt it but radun the Chicago Bears sprinted to the podium to take romad dun after that pick you couldn’t move back with them you couldn’t come back at all I I probably would have gone Dallas Turner on this but you know normally I I try and say with one pick who would I have taken and then let’s keep an eye on that player you know at this one there’s probably 40 guys I would have taken before I would have taken Michael penx for this team in the situation that they are in right now because of signing Kurt Cousins now if you don’t sign kurk cousins yeah okay quarterback and if I didn’t sign Kurt Cousins I may have been able to get danial Hunter Jonathan greenard I could have had the money to outbid some of those other teams uh and and make them a a starter so either way I would have had 90 million in guaranteed to cross two years to upgrade the defense that you’re losing some pieces of and there’s some gaping holes there including Edge rusher cornerback safety yeah and luckily you do have a lot of day two picks and there is talent to be had in the first 60 picks of this class I don’t really love round three I feel like once you get to round three it’s like looks more like round four or five many years uh but we’ll see what happens Bobby means uh Terry fno is now behind the eightball after this year I it’s hard because you’re not going to be able to really ideally not evaluate that pick for a couple of Seasons uh so it’s he is behind the eightball because of it’s not just you know we’re not evaluating penex but it’s the opportunity cost of that pick as well uh but again if if if I know you don’t like it Scott but if penx ends up being a top five quarterback you know a decade from now we’ll look back and be like wow okay we were shocked at the time but it worked out for you good for you you got you you evaluated it right we don’t know what their pure evaluation was uh but the timeline wise it’s um it is risky as hell uh to do that and it definitely is not an investment in the guy you just gave 90 million guaranteed on again with that with that argument again that discussion goes for every draft pick ever made if he works out then it was a great pick so that’s standard it’s different for quarterback though I think it’s in a box little different for quarterback it is any quarterback that’s taken whether we thought this was a reach but if it works out Denver Broncos take B Knicks that was a reach but if it works out Michael Penn if it works out that still doesn’t justify giving KK cousins 90 million yeah and um you know Terry font’s he is Terry fno is on the hot seat without a doubt he’s absolutely on the hot seat but how much does it matter because oh we might not see Michael pennx for three or four years but Brad Clark says doesn’t this put us in a better situation in the future he can sit and learn for a couple years and develop and cousin still get us a chance to win now so both future now we are set at quarterback what are your goals Brad what are what are your goals for this team okay you have two-year window with Kirk Cousins he’s basically a bridge now to Michael pennic did I need to spend $90 million do do do I think I can win and win big with Kirk Cousins if the answer is yes then I should have tried to build up the team I I should have tried to to this team where I could make a run while I have KK cousins while he’s 36y old because he’s got a two-year window with this team before he’s either too old or whatnot if I don’t believe that in Kirk Cousins I don’t need to sign Kirk Cousins if I do believe that that he gives me a chance to win and win big and make a run then I need to support it I need to go for it now I don’t need to get a guy and sit for the future and again with 24 year old quarterback and a team in a pretty decent spot overall why does he have to sit at all why if I can play Desmond Ritter and Taylor hinei last year is a rookie Michael pennick an improvement with a veteran offensive line and weapons all over the place I’m not dropping him into a number one overall pick with a shoty defensive line who just went one and 15 why not play Michael Pennock now I think Michael Pennock as a starter would have improved this team enough that they could have won nine or 10 games last year and be knocking on the door of the playoffs anyway what do I need Kurt Cousins for why does he have to sit and learn doesn’t make any sense to me you I Brad I cannot make the two moves come together I cannot put them together in my head they just no they miss you can’t do it yeah the only thing again trying to logic it is that those evaluation aspects happened in silos and you had the Kurt Cousins ones you made the deal and then okay that’s done now we’re going to do our process for the draft and Scott I know you talk about the they should have already known but a lot of these coaches honest to God don’t start doing the work on the draft prospect process until that’s why you have a scouting Department and a general manager separate from the coach but if the coach has the power they can override I mean that’s a tale I you and I know a few Scouts and they they put in the work and they have opinions and then they the front office presents the stuff to the coaching staff and but what about this guy he’s you know he plays with a lot of toughness and grit we’re gonna toss your board here and uh go with this one so coaches are a a reason that you like to have those two silent no graned we’re definitely more on the front office side of things than the coaching side of things uh but but for a coaching staff specifically again the reports are out there that Raheem Morris loved penic uh that I think maybe it’s a they happened in isolation and that’s how you have something like this because they don’t they don’t Jive otherwise there’s no there’s no way that you pay cousins that if you have a think I thought that you could go get a panic and also I mean with that many quarterbacks going that quickly you probably could have moved up too right um if you didn’t get cousins before but you still a penic you can move up to seven six something like that or play the risk game and have him fall there but yeah it’s uh it’s hard to correlate those two we’ll see what happens luckily the Falcons have a lot of picks the rest of uh day two which will help you know fill out some of the roster are you going to be able to get a pass rusher of that caliber I don’t know um we’ll see but H comes in good morning jents was penck tampering punishment I don’t think so they loved him uh what I would like is for fno and U Morris maybe to stop talking about the stuff there because I feel like you’re kind of isolating your $90 million quarterback and making it weird for penck I mean God I can the Falcons now they got a new head coach I’m like can we have the Falcons in the U Hardo next year because I just want to see the side by sides with kurtt cousins and Michael penx talking to each other but yeah it’s a uhu it’s gonna be a fascinating year for sure funny Rob was he the tampering punishment and again as Harry says there’s a couple of good points coming in here Harry says why didn’t we cut Taylor hinei before his roster bonus for your draft in a quarterback again that’s a good question question too they ended up with an extra $2 million of salary cap hit for Taylor hinei why well he’s the backup then what’s Michael pennx doing besides mothballing for a couple years is that really the plan if you love him that much play him play him well they didn’t play Jordan love okay well if Kirk Cousins goes on to win back-to-back MVPs of the NFL then I will change my narrative Kirk cous isn’t Aaron Rogers the Atlanta Falcons news flash are not the 13 and3 Aaron Rogers Le Green Bay Packers that doesn’t work that way uh and and as triple a Dr Pepper follows up he says what will make this Falcon staff look very incompetent is if you lose one or more premium draft picks next year for tampering again $90 million guaranteed to a 36y old quarterback and it’s going to cost you draft picks to do it and then you back that move by taking a quarterback number eight that just doesn’t sound good y’all there’s there’s just no way to justify that yeah it’s a it’s a pretty wild pick uh Scott I do wonder I mean obviously we’re talking Falcons here and shout out to Lion coffee um I always have the late night uh draft day one Buzz so it’s hard to get to bed and then baby didn’t sleep great last night either had to cook dinner and still walk the dog last night after the uh after the show so I’m going on about three hours of sleep maybe uh but I had to give a shout out to Lion coffee uh for keeping me alive uh this morning I could have rushed down with no coffee but I’m like Scott I I can’t I I mine’s actually calming me down i’ I’ve burned out a little bit the first 30 minutes of this I had beads of sweat coming down so Ryan says Falcon fans are freaking out because we’ve never had a quarterback competition say maybe one of the closest times was when Chris Chandler and Mich Vic were on the team at the same time you know Chandler led the team to the Super Bowl uh was a good quarterback for the Falcons uh made the Pro Bowl and then he you know but he’s his window was closing so you draft Michael Vic number one overall and you try and find ways to get him on the field knowing that he was the future um and again the resources that are put into the quarterback position 45 million $90 million and a top 10 pick for a 36y old guy just doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense yeah uh Edward Brown is now now you’re going to have to draft a top 10 right tackle to protect pennock’s blinds side so now you’ve got Caleb McGary in a pass heavy offense from Zack Robinson protecting Michael pennx is no actually you’re you’re right on this Edward McGary will be gone McGary probably won’t still be the right tackle when his current contract comes out because they’ll think that he is a liability and pass Pro and you’ll say gosh there were five offensive tackles that went after that number eight pick and two of them are in the Pro Bowl huh interesting and Scott I mean we’re talking obviously Falcons show but I would like to maybe talk a little bit big picture uh with the draft as well and I’d like to talk day two so um overall I gotta say I think not to Pat myself on the back but the the draft was pretty although not a lot of people people got the slots right the overall ranges of where these guys came off the board felt pretty good um we had talked about it a lot um on this show like we kept talking about defensive player at eight I’m like man I guess we could talk about Dallas Turner Byron Murphy leat latu there but it’s the defensive talent in this class is Not Top 10 caliber for the most part we don’t have a top a defensive player doesn’t come off the board until pick 15 and then when we did talk about the defensive players who are the group of guys Kenyan Mitchell tyon Arnold Jared verse Leu latu Byron Murphy Dallas Turner literally those guys come off the board picks 15 16 17 19 uh 22 24 so big drop there I will say uh a little bit not surprised but we talked about the top Edge rushers as well who are the guys off the board chop Robinson then pretty much pretty close to in order of what where we had them ranked uh and also just there being that drop off I mean after pick 24 you get Jordan Morgan Graham Barton Darius Robinson Xavier worthy Tyler gon Nate Wiggins Ricky Piera Xavier Legette there’s that Line in the Sand we talked about right there’s that area where it’s that cut off um and didn’t really feel like we had any besides a quarterback leave the quarterback in a a box right it’s its own kind of thing you almost have to make your Quarterback board separate from your other positions but uh really no substantial shocking reaches in that first 24 picks in my opinion I mean it’s really just like I think pretty the NFL evaluators the NFL draft Twitter whatever you want to call them on the whole I think they did a pretty good job this year and uh pretty chalky in that regard yeah there’s the the really only big surprise in the first round was a Falcons at eight um maybe Jordan Morgan sneaking up into the first round you know there had been some chatter of him uh at 25 for the Packers at the offensive line grah Barton was kind of a late Riser as well you know Kansas City Chiefs you get a guy that runs a 4-2 it’s not a surprise to see him in the first round uh I’m not a huge fan of Tyler gon uh for the Cowboys I I just I just question his physicality love Ricky piol not surprised to see him come up and get into the first round at all with the type of production and then the off season that he had um want to um want to hit some supers that are coming in here Scott canaly my friend another Scott K Soccer Dad I’ve known Scott for years he says you demand Scott no you demand Scott thank you for the support hope yall are doing well his uh son’s a hell of a hell of a footballer uh someone to keep an eye on if you’re into that space as well so hope yall are doing well uh burn follows up he says penx isn’t physically ready let him train and learn the Shanahan system to become a dog for the future Kirk knows this system more than anyone okay um again if if pennx was my future and I just needed a year I didn’t need to spend the money on Kurt Cousins that’s that’s that’s where I come down to this I want I I would have rather taken that 90 million guaranteed and put it into building up the team around my QB of the future instead of my QB of the maybe the the bridge it’s an awfully expensive Bridge unless you think that this Falcons defense is good enough to win you a championship right now which I don’t they were 30 second in pass win Rush rate last year and they haven’t added anybody they’ve gotten worse their top two sack guys last year aren’t even on the team kalas Campbell and Bud Dei they’ve gotten worse grd Jarrett comes back that helps but you still have massive massive deficiencies in your front five your safety you can address safety you can address corner on day two but your front five where you find your difference makers on your front five is in the first round or free agency and you didn’t do either that’s that’s a problem did want to talk a little bit about just you know teams that I think did great um today uh obvious or yesterday um wanted to give a shout out to the uh Giants for obviously putting out a lot of smoke and then ending up getting Malik neighbors sitting there at 6 I think they were really trying to manipulate the uh the media to get him to fall oh we’re gonna trade up for May oh we’re GNA take JJ McCarthy here whatever you do don’t trade up ahead of us with the Chargers who would love to trade back and take Malik Neighbors from us uh we love romad dun it’s not Malik neighbors it’s not Malik neighbors well ends up being Neighbors in the end I love that fit um somebody mentioned it in here there is a there’s a funny video of like ay sprinting and there’s like no reason for him to knock this Grandma out of the way but he like just fullon shoves her like air Airborne um and that’s how I pictured the Bears going to the podium when romad dun was there at nine you know sprinting there’s Grandma to the side she’s not really in the way but get the hell out of here grma uh getting romad dun there uh pairing him with Caleb Williams to go with Keenan Allen DJ Moore Cole KT uh young offensive line still I’m man I I have sympathy for Bears fans because I grew up in Eastern Iowa and most people are bears fans and they’ve been a tormented fan base for the most part I mean Bears fans who are also Iowa Hawkeye fans I don’t know how they’ve done it because the offensive has just been so terrible I guess I’ve been having to deal with that in Denver um but wanted to give them a shout out uh I think the I really do like what the Vikings did as far as the players they got they gave up so much future capital and both trades as far as what they gave up value wise they lost I saw them getting ploted for not giving up that much I was like that looks like an awful lot to move up to that 17 pick from what 23 to 17 it seemed like they gave up a lot to me they did I think I saw the value was they gave up the equivalent of a future early to MidFirst to move up with the McCarthy and the uh Dallas Turner move so they don’t have many picks in 2025 I think right now they’re sitting on three or four for 2025 we’ll see what happens there um if they get their quarterback it won’t really matter uh that much and just looking at the rest of the board um I don’t know if it’s the biggest winner today but somebody I am really excited to see what happens uh with the fit I think they did a great job in the draft today and somebody that deserved a little help got some help and that is the Jaguars trading down getting all that extra Capital going from 17 uh down to 23 and ending up with Brian Thomas who pairing him with Trevor Lawrence who I expect to get a huge contract before the start of the next season is great Trevor Lawrence has needed some help out there I think that he’s I know he had unbelievable expectations coming into the league and because the Jaguars have been ho hum he hasn’t hit them but when you sit down and actually watch Trevor Lawrence he’s pretty masterful at the quarterback position already I think that adding to Brian Thomas and another year in that system he’s got a chance in my opinion to propel himself into that top seven top 10 conversation without a doubt uh him versus CJ stad this year versus Anthony Richardson man the AFC South is so fun um is going to be a blast but Jags trading down and then getting Brian Thomas I think is might be my favorite team day one today I mean again the the that’s because the best moves were made last year which was Chicago you know Chicago coming out of this with Caleb Williams and romad dun at one and9 is was a master stroke it’s just we’ve already expected that yeah to happen so for me it was it was uh them and then you know the Cardinals may have gotten the best player in the draft someone to watch with with Marvin Harrison Jr and if they can get another Larry Fitzgerald then that he’s going to be an awful lot of fun to watch one of the best to ever do it and Austin fries brings up a good point here why not go after Trey Hendrickson with a second and third round pick there’s your defensive line help Scott yes it is yes it is so it’s not over it just seems a little harder because you’re kind of out of free agency money but a new contract you can massage some things and uh you could do some stuff yes that would be a really good move for this team you get Trey Hendrickson for a third round pick and spend some money for sure rusty Moore bringing up a meme about the dogs in Atlanta seeing a quarterback that looks you know physically similar to Michael Vic being scared dude that’s rough that’s that’s rough um let me see here where did I there was another Super in here that I wanted to grab real quick we’re already at an hour five uh and then he says Edward says Baltimore as usual sits back unless the draft come come to them and still gets a good player uh Nate’s a little under siiz but again traits monster we talk about that scale at the back end of the draft you’ve got physical traits up this axis and then along this axis you got football player the guys that go in the top 10 are top right on both and then the guys that the Ravens and the Chiefs the Steelers typically end up getting are really high on one of the other they’re either really really good football players or trade monsters and Nate Wiggins at corner for the Baltimore Ravens is a is a super fast uh cover guy and they’ve got some Thumpers out there that they could use you know a guy like him so solid another solid pick for the Ravens yeah Ravens did well I love the Seahawks sitting there and doing what they do adding to the defensive line uh some more with a premium pick and I also really like the according to my board one of the best values of uh the entire draft was the Steelers Troy font there at 20 so actually kind of an inside scoop here um but um one of my buddies is a general manager at Pensky out here in Seattle and uh he had Troy Fontano come in and he talked to him for a bit and he’s like he where are you gonna go he’s like oh man been doing a lot of work with the Steelers um there I’m like I don’t think they’ll get past 16 in the end I don’t know if the Seahawks thought that U fno would fall uh or Murphy would fall so they took him but uh shout out to my buddy Ty um who had the inside scoop there saying talking to detroy F himself and saying yeah look out for the Steelers that ends up being the pick there Jeremy says congrats to the Bears for drafting number one overall every year yeah but that wasn’t their pick they flee somebody to get number one so the Falcons are picking number eight every year on their own merits so yeah the the Bears getting the number one overall pick was good wheeling and dealing that was good maneuvering for them so getting one and nine was a good move uh for them I mean picture if that had happened on draft day the the Chicago Bears are traff are sending Bryce young for a f the number one overall and another a future number one you’d be like what it’d be eye popping wouldn’t it oh and they’re getting you know who’ they get in return their their the receiver they got back that was that was really good I’ve already forgotten his name Nick I don’t I don’t remember the Bears who’ they get the receiver that came from the Panthers in that deal he’s a number one and I can’t remember his name DJ DJ Moore DJ Moore yeah we’d be our jaw would drop yeah but we’ve already had s come to grip with that still the best move of this draft was last year’s move on that one so we are just about to get out of here a couple more supers coming in watch 20-minute highlights of penx he’s good Tyler penx is good no doubt about that he’s got a first round arm so you know to kind of just to sum up because we’ve been going for a while Kurt Cousins I can make sense of Kurt Cousins Michael Pennock I can make sense of Michael pennick I cannot make sense of Kirk Cousins and Michael Pennock I can’t do it that that the resources would have been better if you had gone Kirk Cousins you did the resources for this team would have been better spent trying to build up the team while you have Kurt Cousins under contract if you didn’t get Kurt Cousins then the free agency money you had would have been better off building the team around a rookie quarterback that you drafted I can’t justify the two moves together I can’t do it tried I just can’t real quick then we’re going to out of here Curtis thank you for closing us out here he says who is the best player available the Falcons can draft now one of the questions Chris Walker ask who’s the best right tackle Roger rosengarten might be that guy um he’s Washington also I didn’t really even think of that Washington’s Roger rosengarten played right tackle and never gave up a sack for Michael Pennock there you go how about him uh wide receivers there’s some pretty good ones still on the board there too and then uh you’ve got your pick of your second round corners Braden Fisk defensive lineman still there so um I expect wide receiver Corner defensive line is kind of where you’re looking or maybe offensive tackle still on on day two and there three Pi tonight I know you want to get out of here but could we do a quick round two round three simulator just to kind of talk at the board here especially since I got here L I want to hang out some more Scot I was half expecting I don’t know how much movies you watch but uh I thought maybe I’d come on the show today and you’d be the Joker I thought that pick might last night might literally you know you’re coming in I refuse to acknowledge that it’s not funny I won’t I’ll quit pretending that it’s not I I always like that my one of my favorites is you know Heath Ledger is one of the best characters ever in cinema period but I like it when Twoface wakes up in the hospital and he’s let her sitting there in the hospital hi like I’m sorry I’m here hi that’s how I say hello to my wife hi sorry sorry it’s it’s me again I apologize um I don’t know that we can do a a second round mock I think we can actual 24 picks yeah we can yeah we can I’m like PF good about this just do two and three um they’re they’re pretty good about this I want to prefill pre-fill the picks and I can choose the number eight Atlanta Falcons I want to do a three round mock I want to pre-fill those so start at pick 20 at 33 um positional value we’ll turn that up just a bit needs we’ll move that down a little bit and we’ll hit go we ready to go let’s do it yeah this a good idea 33 on the clock we’ll start draft next pick for the Atlanta Falcons is 43 uh Payton Wilson linebacker Johnny Newton fell to 41 there’s Rosen Gart at 40 maybe you talk about a little bit of a trade up you’re right right tackle there he is there’s your Caleb McGary replacement right there at 40 uh wide receiver lab makon like see all these wide receivers kind of went Kool-Aid mckinstry is still there someone else to keep an eye on uh if you really if you’ve got your safety evaluated you need a starting safety um Richie Grant you can sign you can save almost three you can save a little over $ three million if you move on from Richie Grant and Richie Grant was not an average safety and he’s making average NFL safety money Adisa Isaac there’s one of your edges right there yeah I really like Roman Wilson is did Cooper deene go off the board here he must he went first no he didn’t oh that was right they they missed that one when they called it they said Cooper de Jee then it wasn’t Cooper deine yeah he must have gone on the board here maybe CER went 35 okay because I would say he’d be amazing for you as far as a looking for a safety um returner as well so I’m looking at the board here um edges stand out here I agree with Jeremy the two that really uh stand out to me um even though he’s not that high I think he’s going to come off the board here pretty quickly and that’s um marshan neand um I think he’s gonna end up being a good uh end up going pretty high if you want to go at the board instead I don’t even know where I think PFF is a little lower on him uh but I think Adisa Isaac makes some sense here as well that’s probably where I’d go Adisa was really good in the 11 v1s at the Senior Bowl I think you’ve got two number twos then but if I can rotate them in and maybe get anything out of D’Angelo Malone this year then I’m I’m running three in there and then Lorenzo Carter um you know everybody always just like Arnold abetti well Arnold eetti improved last year so eetti Isaac Malone and I’m still probably looking for a guy and for agency uh possibly to come in and help but I I would probably go Isaac in this spot okay I got I got a dark horse here for you what about quarterback no I’m just kid I’m just kidding God I I had to do it to you um yeah I think ad ISAC makes a lot of sense quarterbacks are gone do you ever consider maybe uh you know I’m just kidding um I’m fine with Adisa Isaac here I see the chat also is talking Fisk makes some sense yeah I don’t mind I like Fisk also so we mentioned wide receiver Corner well we mentioned all of them for God’s sake Scott Rosen Gart if heer makes sense here’s a big DL a roaro I could have gone Braden Fisk there I would have been happy with Roman Wilson there and I would have been happy possibly with the safety there so there will be good players available like we’ve said all along my dream scenario in this NFL draft was to trade back and get another top 50 pick because I love the players in the top 50 the top 60 really of this draft at 74 uh aoro really good defensive linean there’s some uh there’s some value there devontes Walker will he fall that far Javon Baker another good wide receiver traits monster Johnny Wilson still need a safety there’s still safeties I like here Austin Booker cornerback Renardo green green I need another corner there’s players I can get that I can plug into my starting defensive line or a wide receiver too on here too I mean starting defense not just defensive line corner two safety two uh defensive line depth yeah and I just want to say real quick gats boy uh we’re going to give our opinions of what this team’s doing I’m not even rooting for any teams here we’re just going to give our analysis but uh don’t gatekeep that’s that’s my only I only have one rule well two rules for fandom don’t be a Richard and uh don’t gatekeep uh fans can fan their own way uh for me the one who stands out here is ruk ororo uh I think he is the uh the best player left on the board I know that the Falcons on paper are not like you know desperate desperate for defensive tackle uh but I think aoro is U really athletically gifted he’s long and he is he’s still putting it together as a pass rusher but you have the potential there but his tape as a run Defender was fantastic this last season um unfortunately he was only the second best defensive tackle on that Clemson team because they had a true freshman named Peter Woods um who is different um you we’ll be talking about him in 2026 but it’s he’s he’s one of those ones where you have like the uh the wolf with the eyes poking out of their head auga auga uh that’s uh that was Peter woods but uh I think aoro makes a lot of sense here I don’t love the I if you wanted linebacker to I really like Junior Coulson uh he’s my number one linebacker in this class honestly uh but he get a little bit more value and I think there’s a drop off at defensive tackle after roro I’m not as big on Brandon dless who I feel like is a little bit more yeah me neither I’d rather have a Roho there too um yeah real quick bside rap reviews uh y’all if y’all are into rap check out his channel it’s pretty awesome so if if that’s your if that’s your your flavor of Style music bide rap reviews channel is is pretty sweet so y’all check him out uh he comes in with a super he says our win now mode was really just a two-year window of first- round playoff exits than back to quarterback Purgatory I’d rather turn our two-year window into fiveyear with pennic move Ellis to Edge and Phill needs later in the draft and bside rap reviews again this just is the argument against Kurt Cousins so basically everything that we’ve talked about if you don’t think that you know hey we’re we’re just going to make an incremental increase and we’re still not going to be really good 10 and seven then you don’t need to spend $90 million on Kurt Cousins take that 90 million of guaranteed money and build it around the team so you get a a more a steady and draft Michael penck I’m okay with that I’m not okay with 90 million and Michael penx I’m not okay with with uh with it just it’s the two of them together don’t make any sense so invest in other parts of the team if you get your quarterback well they got their quarterback and then they went and got another quarterback and that that doesn’t make any that doesn’t make any sense to me that’s that’s the problem I’m I’m having with it so but I I certainly appreciate the idea again I like Michael pennick I don’t like Michael penck and Kirt cousins I just don’t not the resources that it took to do that for position where only one of them can be on the field funeral services coming in always good to catch y’all live you if you’re an hour and a half late we’re running a little late yall give you your thought on the pick last night nah not a bit uh start from the beginning and you’ll think oh my god I’ve got a customer Scott’s gonna have a freaking heart attack he’s he’s gonna pop a corner there’s probably the big old forehead of mine there’s probably a vein popping out the uh the the idea again of spending 90 million guaranteed on Kurt Cousins and then backing that with a number eight overall pick at quarterback just is asinine to me it’s just asinine and that’s not against Michael again that’s not against Michael Pennock Michael penck is a good player y’all he’s a good football player I love the arm he’s got a first round arm I don’t need them both and despite the fact if I’m sitting a guy for four or five years and it means I’m really good at the position that’s fine there is an opportunity cost to have them both either who am I not getting at number eight or who did I not get in free agency because I gave Kurt Cousins $90 million those assets would have been better spent somewhere else that’s the problem I’m having on this one I can go DL best player on here I like the wide receivers there’s going to be another wide receiver again when we pick take the 79 overall pick so do I want to get a monster a Kyle pittz clone and Johnny Wilson or something a little different like a Javon Baker or a hybrid in and devantez Walker I like the wide receivers here um Kyrie Jackson’s okay Renardo green we’ve done that before but I I like the corners I like the wide receivers in this spot probably a little bit better yeah keep scrolling down I’m just curious I want to see how really I feel like it really falls off here man um pun’s interesting but I feel like he’s almost a little redundant to uh that’s who we probably should have gone with with Michael Hall I I think roro is a little they’re both good um Roo’s got a little bit more Body Beautiful um I mandated that you take a wide receiver in this spot because those are the best players I think are on the board which one do you want oh man I think I go devontes Walker it’s uh it’s hard for me here um to say that just R worth taking he had some drop problems at the Senior Bowl but before that he’s really talented and was thought of as a first- round pick Let’s get that straight he tested great I just have issues drafting wide receivers who uh fight the ball but like Baker I have some questions about separating Johnny talk about dropping the football Johnny Wilson sometimes looks like he’s playing with two left hands that’s not a saying Nick I don’t know um again we follow we talked to this Malik Washington’s really interesting but pretty small thick but small um I think I go thank you Scott yeah that’s what she said uh um but uh I think I lean Walker here just because the athletic upside and we’re hunting for explosive plays and I think Walker has a chance to bring that all right so we got a second round Edge and Adisa Isaac we got defensive line help if I’m not mistaken uh with aoro and then we got a wide receiver I didn’t necessarily hit how do I have four picks oh because the first one was on there um Edge DL wide receiver I still want my corner I still want my safety but I’m not going to reach So based on how this board Fell in This mock this is the way we went and we saw some guys that could have be available I love Rosen Garten there’s your right tackle of the future cornerback safety edge that’s that’s what you’re looking for in with your three picks tonight in day two yeah it’s that that’d be a way to salvage it some um yeah we’ll see what it’s just it’s really hard to find on paper quality Edge rushers after that first round um now granted Maybe This Year wasn’t the year to get that guy obviously they don’t go until pick 15 uh but it’s um historically speaking Edge rusher day two is not filled with superstars it’s you have a chance to find okay starters yeah as you’ve seen as you’ve seen with the Falcons well and and you hope one of them you can find wide receivers in in the second round they’re usually there so again there are lots of good players available tonight stay tuned we’re going to get out of here check out all the coverage on Al falcons.com I want to say thank you to our many superstars that came in over the course of the day coach kicked us off lman Edward Brown several times Joe I got Joe I missed Joe earlier Joe I apologize uh I missed this super I’m not sure how Joe said sorry Scott this’s a tough pill to swallow especially during optimism season if it’s any consolation I sent your gut reaction to a friend last night and you had him dying laughing great work and love all the effort Joe I’m sorry I missed this super I’m glad we’re going back through and thank you for sharing it’s uh because of people like you the site has grown we broke 6,000 subscribers on YouTube last night and um the uh the draft is good for the Senior Bowl stuff so I think we had probably six guys go in the first round that were in the Senior Bowl yesterday so lots of stuff uh Edward Brown again and uh I don’t know how I missed all this stuff when they came in at the beginning uh Nick Sutton rusty Moore uh Drew Quinton Darius was probably there you were so fired up I probably skipped down to Darius saying take a chill pill this is for a chill pill and I missed some of those apologies y’all uh Addison John Brothers Tyler uh Bobby means Rob Scott Kiley burn rusty Moore uh Curtis case Joe again thank you for coming back Joe bside rap reviews and funeral services on that note y’all it’s been a long 12 hours or so and I appreciate you taking the ride with us we’re going to get out of here we will be back on Monday for a review of the entire draft day three is loaded Y and the Falcons have three picks cesia of the Calvin Ridley trade and we’ll see who that pick turns into Nick any final words uh did also want to give a shout out to a few other of my favorite picks in this class um the the Lions going up and getting Terry and Arnold um he has a chance to be the best defensive prospect in this class and getting him at 24 I know that there’s some questions about his ability to stick on the boundary uh but adding another defensive back that brings tenacity and tackling and versatility uh especially in today’s uh soft Zone coverage world having guys who are tacklers and physical coming downhill is really big so I thought that’s a good move and then all the talk about the Eagles wanting to move up to get uh Mitchell and him falling to 22 and them just taking him so uh waiting on cornerback uh quarterback’s probably in my opinion the fifth most valuable position in sports now but still a position of value and them sitting there and having him fall maybe sixth if you want to put in Edge rusher and defensive tackle separately uh but I thought they did a good job waiting there and getting good value uh that late in the draft Eagles have done a good job in the draft recently and uh they’ve got the wins to back it up and free agency $32 million guaranteed on a wide receiver it’s a lot of money but AJ Brown’s a pretty good one and uh they back their investment they put into him uh special thank you to Lion coffee.com check them out use your code g Falcons 20 for 20% off at lion coffee.com already finished mine and I’ll probably be hitting it again later so thanks for being here everybody y’all have great weekend enjoy the rest of the draft and again whether the move made sense or not this Falcons team has improved greatly over the last six months without a doubt in my mind there is still plenty to be excited about in 2024 even if we didn’t like necessarily how they’ve handled the quarterback position they’ve got a quarterback they’ve got two y’all have a great weekend we’ll see you later peace

  1. This is there logic:
They'll eat 37.5 mil in 2026-2027 when they cut Cousins after the 2025 season.
The low cost of Penix Jr. (being on his rookie deal) makes those cap hits easier to swallow and Cousins will be off their books in 2028… just in time to sign Penix to his 2nd deal.

I think that Atlanta is sending Kirk a message: "you've got two years to build your legacy…".
Penix can also be used as leverage to force Kirk to restructure his deal if he's playing really well.

  2. Look i wasnt happy with the pick at all but we could not have got a qb in later rounds with the talent of penix and lets be honest what good would any other player be if kirk gets hurt do we really want to run it back with heinicke? I mean you can not say kirk will be healthy for a year or 4 if we dont have penix and kirk goes down week 1 what good would it do to have turner or anyone else if we are getting turnovers repeatedly and our defense is on the field 80% of the game thats y we had so many injuries on defense in 23 they was over worked and still performing at a high level so with a good offense that keeps our defense fresh not turn our 6 sack players into 10 sack maybe more granted calais hasnt resigned yet but i can see where this makes sense i just didn’t want it to because I wanted the best defensive player in the draft or rome odunze… thanks for the pod scott your the man

  3. I get what you’re saying scott and agree for the most part but you sign Kirk because you’re unsure about the draft and its a jump now or lose the opportunity then you yourself have said in this league you have to have a good backup we didn’t so they took penix i wish it was Dallas and i value your opinion love the show but I can see y they did it penix is good but penix learning from cousins for 2-4 years could be great , least thats what im trying to tell myself

  4. Say you didnt sign kirk and just signed penix then we have to work the bugs out of a rookie qb on the field at least this way we have a great qb for the time being and a good backup with arguably one of the best fundamentally sound qbs to teach penix

  5. I think all you folks are not seeing the big picture. Lets say Cousins gets hurt , then who takes over Hienikie get real , its a succession plan for the future. We still have , something like 5 picks. Its old school foorball.

  6. CRAZY ASF!!!!He's still working as a SPY for the Saints. Got himself hired just to screw up our pick. Trade Penix and Fontenot for a veteran edge

  7. The Atlanta Falcons Front Office IS incompetent. Not really surprising when you see who is in charge. Penix was a ridiculous pick for your organization.

  8. The process of this pick is absolutely not how I would’ve done this but I’m also absolutely happy they didn’t fool themselves into thinking Cousins was a long term answer. All in all if you have a chance at what you see as a legit franchise QB, take it, pick value be damned. We’ll know if it works in a couple years

  9. Best case scenario is Kirk has strong year this and you trade him next offseason and just eat his dead cap money while you have a quarterback on a rookie deal

  10. Sounds like the plan was to take the can't miss qb prospect to secure the future, and desperately tried to trade back into the 1st to secure an immediate need (Latu). The plan was great, but unfortunately we couldn't pull it off.

  11. Just bc you are in "win now mode" doesn't mean you can just forget about the future. If you can do both, that's ideal. I believe that was the intended plan.

  12. First off as a 35 year Falcons Fan the Organization has to earn my support by putting the best product they possibly can on the Field. The idea that Fans have to just go along & not be critical of a failing franchise is ridiculous & something you'd expect from someone getting paid by the Falcons. It's a dumb pick & you haven't seen bad reactions yet. Just wait till one of the guys we could of had goes off in 2024 on another team while Falcons fans have to wait 4-5 years to see if there 2024 1st round pick even hit.
