ladies and gentlemen sea Payton yeah coach coach how are you guys doing look I’m gonna be honest Pat Uh bill and I have done a number of Trades a heck of a lot faster than coming on this show and so you guys are talking about like Ocean City New Jersey there’s pcks happening out here um excited to be on and uh always appreciate you guys hey we’ll waste as much time as possible for you you got nothing going on as you’re trying to rebuild this entire team let’s talk about it obviously you guys move on from Russell Wilson $85 million in dead salary cap there was a lot of expectation for you to go young at the quarterback position Bo Nicks was tied to you quickly throughout this draft process how come what did you see from him and why’ you ultimately make the decision yeah I well a couple things um you we we have a hard time controlling the outside narrative relative to who might go where um and and certainly there’s been a lot of comparisons you know whether it’s to Drew um but we we tried to really go into this process and and look at each one of these guys and fortunately for us we we had a lot of them have a ton of playing experience Bose played six years I mean and then we start doing the studies and we’re comparing Drake and we’re and we’re kind of then narrowing it down because you you know we’re looking at Drake we’re looking at JJ we’re looking at penx um you know we don’t know where we’re going to be at with Daniels and certainly uh uh Caleb so we get to a point where we’re we’re really spending time taking visits and one of the things we like to do is you know on the night before we get to the school on a private workout 5:00 pm we’re going to send them 3 days of installation we’re going to try to send them maybe more than they can get from 5:00 p.m. till the next morning at 9: when we’re there and just kind of get an idea where it stops and and all of these guys handled that well um and so we do the same thing with Bo and and when we get up there um like he’s I don’t know what time he got to the office but I felt like you know he was in a hotel room with a do not disturb sign on coffee you know the whole thing and and because their their work week is is is pretty stressful and um he’s he’s he’s super intelligent we have his center from a year ago Alex forsight he’s very smart and the thing the thing that we kept finding with him as because you’re trying to be number one we start with the things that they can do it’s easy to start with the things they can’t do and his coach is like what can he do and then so analytically you remove the short passes he’s got a play in the offense he’s in but first on third down first with few ass saacks the the the most accurate passer in college football history first at the end of the half 2 minute first at the end of the game in 2 minutes second in Red Zone fewest sacks first in time to get so number one he’s extremely smart he handles the protections and he’s a tough sack I mean the ball the ball comes out and at times you know he can hang in longer maybe with a progression but I think aside from the mental then that day and even his Pro Day his arm strength was extremely impressive um he he does throw it from a noisy pocket you know some quarterbacks need that that full stride step and we felt like you know a lot of times he just took that little 2-in pop step to get the ball out mhm and you get to a point and I remember saying this in our ownership meeting and I said we can’t be the only ones seeing this like you know in other words despite you know we got to avoid the NFL train cu the NFL train will just take you into a like into a quarry yeah and and you know so you’re working uh our ownership group and George and I and the scouts and and and and I think it’s harder now for the scouts and assisant coaches not to to hear that outside noise and be affected by all of that and really just close the doors and pay attention to what you see and uh yeah I I uh it now it got a little hairy there when Atlanta took pennic because we thought as soon as we cleared the Giants we felt like all right min s’s going to get their guy and uh shoot we could call up the Vikings and Raiders we all kind of knew who each other wanted and said look don’t do anything foolish here so um but we were excited all right well it sounds like you got your guy you just ratted off a bunch of stats you’ve obviously done your homework and now a new era in Denver begins Bill’s got something for you Sean yeah Sean I you know uh we were talking about this at the beginning of the show you know Nicks has played a lot of football he’s played a lot of good football and it’s kind of felt like the short passing game was you know the product of the system but he could definitely get the ball down the field and you know it looks like he’s pretty I nobody’s NFL ready but I’d say of the college quarterbacks he’s probably pretty close to being NFL ready and you know like you said the best quarterback in the pocket best in those situations there’s a lot to like about this kid and he and he wins and he wins yeah I so look we we they they play in two big games against Oregon and you you say all right let’s take a peek at this first game drives him down the field they got a chance to win they miss a field goal um I also like the fact that he’s he’s had some adversity you know and and look he he was in Auburn U he battled back and I think you know a completely different offense um so I ask these listen I this this analytic group that we have here we’ve got five of these guys that and I said look I want take all the intermediate short throws out I want to see how he stacks so we got rid of all the quick screens the bubbles cuz he can’t that’s his offense when they’re calling those plays and remove all that first in yards per completion first and and and so it it kept coming back and uh the thing the thing that was most impressive and I we have these things Pat and Bill knows that we have critical factors you know we don’t want linebackers that can’t tackle receivers that can’t I mean there’s certain things that are musts yes and I think it’s hard I think it’s hard to be an NFL quarter back if if you know you’re not somewhat accurate and watch his pro day and then we and and then we were there for the pro day and then our private workout was the following day we threw 80 more balls and I can’t think of a pass where and and so the first sign of an inaccurate quarterback is when you’re throwing these shorter these shorter routes because the ball’s got to be on the right shoulder it’s got to be on the you know for the back um it’s a little bit easier down the field to to stretch the ball and maybe uh hide your accuracy deficiencies and so man it it’s it was impressive and uh I just remember we got in the car afterwards and I just looked around and I said are you kidding me I mean he the other thing was I was surprised how big he he’s 62 218 lbs you know it’s it’s hard sometimes when you play on the west coast your games are on at 9pm but um yeah I I think I think the biggest thing is trust in what you’re seeing and and I say that respectfully everyone has jobs to do and and and it’s always like well manage the draft this is you know they could have backed up and got him and I heard that with Patrick momes when when Kansas City took him and I’m like well they couldn’t have backed up and got him because we were taking him with the next pick so it I I think uh look we before penck was taken we were discussing like a slight wiggle then you start looking at it and saying is it worth the risk for a third round pick and and uh I’m just glad it worked out in our favor he’s excited uh shoot he’s a he’s a son of a coach and a son of a former player and I just like you know it’s harder to be a gym rat these days and I like the fact I like the fact that he’s one of them yeah hell yeah it sounds like you got a great fit over there we’re excited to watch you two grow together maybe Kevin James comes in and coaches them up a little bit too you never know it might be the right play have a great night we appreciate the hell out of you Sean thanks Sean heyy appreciate you and Bill we miss you and uh like like the one thing we said this at the start of the draft you know as as we get older and these these other coaches and GMS get younger you don’t know who’s ready to make a deal like when you need to on a spot and and I always appreciate you know Bill and I have had a ton of times where in 8 seconds we could do a trade and it was or not do one and I think it’s harder with a lot of these younger GMS and so as as we get older there’s less there’s less people people that maybe you feel like uh that you could pick up the phone and call so we certainly miss you during this time time period appreciate it Sean ton of respect for you and uh you know congratulations all right thank you guys we’ll see you ladies and gentlemen head coach of Denver Broncos Shawn Payne thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]

  1. Draft picks are like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re going to get. Mama says 😂but I think Nix is going to surprise a lot of people

  2. Payton got boxed in and had to take Nix; 11 other teams had a chance at him and passed. They must know something we don't.

  3. They drafted nix because he was the only one left 😉 Don't get me wrong, he's a good QB and a good pick, but the WHY isn't really a question lol

  4. Blah, blah, blah………they needed to draft a QB and Bo was what's left! He may turn out to be a total winner by chance, not by the Bronco's believing he was a top choice!

  5. Career-defining mistake. Nix is a career journeyman at best and he had no business being drafted in the first round.

  6. If Nix works out as a franchise QB, 12th is not a reach. If he is not, then it is a waste even as a 4th round pick. So, this is really all on Sean. Broncos has picked QBs at all rounds of draft since Manning and none works out. All along, it is a front office problem, they don't know how to pick. I hope Sean can change that.

  7. lol Sean likes to act like a genius could of traded down to the last pic of the 1st round and still got Nix. + had more assets later in the draft or next year..
No one after Denver was gonna take a QB in the first round…. Nix was the biggest winner he would have fell to the 2nd round if Sean didn’t panic. What happened is he was really trying to trade up for JJ it wasn’t a bluff but the Vikings got it instead then he panicked and drafted the last QB that had a 1st round 2nd round grade. Then he had to say some in this press conference to make it look like nix was all he ever wanted you can just tell he always has to say some like that to make himself feel better.

  8. I'm both a Vikings fan (lifelong) and Broncos fan (since the arrival of Elway), and I'm so happy about these two selections. These two guys fit their respective systems perfectly. A couple of winners.

  9. Bo Nix going #12 overall…………..I owe Steeler fans an apology makin fun of them picking Kenny Pickett 20th overall. B/c thats what this pick is for the Broncos.
**And the Dumpster fire in Denver continues

  10. Man, I love Sean but god is it hard to follow his conversation. Dude changes subject every 3 sentences haha!

  11. Why does Payton think he’s a god in this game? He’s such an arrogant clown
