There’s a lot going on right now in New England fishing. The tog bite has been heating up in a hurry across southern Massachusetts, and Rhody has been putting out great catches with lots of keepers and a few double-digits as well. The fish have been relatively shallow too, mostly 30 feet or less. Striper action is also cooking right along with the first 30-pounders reported in Connecticut and Rhode Island and schoolies reaching the New Hampshire border. Beyond these things, we have great largemouth bass fishing again this week and trout fishers continue to crush it throughout the region.

the allnew Yamaha V6 offshore F350 it’s a featherweight knockout the lightest 350 horsepower outboard on the water exhilarating boating and incredible control in a powerfully light design the Yamaha V6 offshore F350 Dave Anderson here with the fisherman magazine it’s May 2nd these your headlines we have 30 lb class stripers showing up in New England Waters this week to summon nansa Bay and there’s even more of them out in the western sound also seeing some double digit tog coming out of r Island Waters this week and big large amount of fast continue to show up in the reports just really good fishing this April stay tuned for all that more on this week’s New England fishing forecast the fishing news is sponsored by These Fine Partners before we begin we’ve got a few news items for you guys the first one comes to us from our my New Jersey counterpart Jim Hutchinson going to tell us about striper request which is a really cool concept stripe bass tournament going on down in New Jersey and I think we’re all hoping that’s it’s going to expand to other regions so here he is check this out this is a mini Pat device by Wildlife computers deployed aboard Chuck Manny’s thaan for our Northeast stripe bass study a project launched back in 2019 with a fisherman magazine and grayfish tag research now this sat tag tracking device reg registers is water temperature depth and light over a period of time and now in our case it’s several months and it gives us an idea where these stripers go after they’ve been caught and released I want you to take a look inside the May edition our tail end feature for the month of May this is the New Jersey Delaware Bay edition of the fisherman magazine but Jenny auran has a tail end feature in there about that last tag deployed in 2023 that she found on the beaches of the Jersey Shore back on Good Friday now I spoke with roxan from grayfish TAG research about the data that’s stored on this particular tag it’s quite preliminary but I got to tell you the early Returns on this tracking of this stripe bass over the winter months extraordinary so this tracking technology is opening up new opportunities and the data retrieved thus far is sending us a brand new directions so on Thursday May 17th we’ll be holding our second annual striper Quest event deploying four more satellite tags in New York bite stripers and opening up the day’s event to a field of 50 boats the largest day of strip bass tagging especially in competition form anywhere the captain’s meeting is going to be at Ross Brewery in bford New Jersey on Wednesday night the tagging competition uh commences on Thursday then we’ll we’re going to have an Afterparty with awards ceremony following that fishing day it’s going to be back at Ross Brewery and I I hope to have some more details at that event on this latest sat tag and what’s inside uh exclusively for folks are going to be at that event because I think that’s the first time we’re going to really be able to crack open this Easter egg we’ve got people coming for this event from all over the world literally we’ve got guides coming from Mexico and Central America Ben from jackpot sport fishing out of Marina pz he’ll be there Crews from Penn afw yoori seagar Tackle Direct caterpillar marine stiger and more all competing to see who can tag the most stripers and help contribute to this ongoing strip bass effort again it’s a 50 booat field and we think the last minute entry requests will be heavy so if you want to join us I hope you would I want you to go to grayfish tag research.org striper dqu you’ll see it when you go to the grayfish tag org homepage or look to your edition of the fisherman magazine scan the QR code and I hope to see you there make 2024 your year to win compete in the Jenny aran’s Open Boat this one’s going to tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Bluefish here she is hey everyone welcome to this week’s open boat and today my little open boers school is back in session I am doing another fish biology episode now if you haven’t already heard the yelloweyed demons have invaded the East Coast I’ve been crushed them every single night they are an absolute favorite of mine the serial killers of soft plas itics the annihilators of plugs are here and today I’m going to give you a little rundown on Bluefish biology now first off with their Latin name the pomatomus saltatrix that sounds like a new conventional reel coming out in 2025 but that is in fact their Latin name for the good old Bluefish now the females can lay between 4,2 million eggs and those eggs can hatch after only 48 Hours of being in the water and the little baby blues unlike their adult counterparts that feed on literally anything that moves the little ones feed on Plankton now as they get older of course they’re going to feed on smaller fish they’re going to see anything that swims around them they’re going to try to take a chomp out of some of them have even been known to Target humans I know a lot of surfers are more afraid of blue fish than they are of sharks because of their just vicious reputation they just want to eat everything in sight they are glutton and absolutely ferocious now Bluefish can live for up to 12 years and the biggest record Blue Fish was caught out of hatus North Carolina and it was 31 lb 12 oz you think you can beat that this season I don’t know I’m just happy to catch one so blue fish are really cool because they could be found basically throughout the world’s oceans prominently in tropical to temperate Waters most of the time they’re very common in The Atlantics but they can also be found in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans now since I familiarized you guys on the biology It’s always important to know a little bit fishy facts about the species you’re trying to Target I’ll get into the regs if you wanted to keep the blue fish they aren’t really so tasty but there are recipes that make them work but you know Catch and Release if you don’t want to eat them so the regulation throughout the region there’s no Clos season there’s no size limit Anglers can keep three fish however if you’re on a four higher boat there’s a five fish bag per angler limit now targeting the species now everyone thinks that you can only get them on top water that’s only if they’re feeding you know they have blitzes just like striper blitzes Bluefish Blitz on the surface my favorite top water lore to Target Bluefish is the island X this is in their amber color and it’s like a nice top water pencil it has single hooks so it’s easy to remove the hooks blue fish have teeth they’re dangerous you don’t want to make the mistake I did just kidding but there are people who have lost appendages to Bluefish don’t even try to lift them make sure you always have pliers the island exlore this thing absolutely crushes bluefish on the surface it has an excellent action it’s basically like a pencil popper and it is loaded so it can cast even farther whether you’re blue fishing off the boat or you’re blue fishing off the surf you can basically grab the top of the plug hopefully it’s hooked on that tail hook and just pop the blue fish off you want to avoid the mouth as much as you can next up in the water column is something that I’ve been crushing them on locally here you can see the battle scars on this plug this is the new tsunami title Pro twitch bait and I swapped out the back hook for a single cuz there’s just too many troubles you’re asking for trouble when you’re using troubles for blue fish so it’s always good to swap out a back treble for a single hook and you like I said you can see the battle scars from this thing it’s got absolutely annihilated by Bluefish and it has a nice rattle that just aggravates them even more and now sometimes they’re not even on the top or in the midwater column they’re on the bottom so you basically have to jig them up so what do I use when I’m jigging up Bluefish just a handy dandy Bucktail you can never go wrong with a Bucktail you just jig it off the bottom and trust me if there’s blue fish around they’re going to find it they will hunt down your lore and make it their personal goal to absolutely annihilate it one of the best fighting fish off the surf is the blue fish now get yourself ready to go out there and Target some blues and be mindful of your fingers cuz blue fish like those too stay safe out there and I’ll see you guys on next week’s open boat for more than 20 years Anglers everywhere have come to know one thing that nothing says no to fish bites and the last thing of course is a giveaway which is ongoing we’re going to give away a flat Glide Needle Fish made by me and uh by now you guys probably know the drill but it’s just got to be a recently caught fish it’s got to show you holding your fish it can’t be laying here on the marsh or something like that and you’ve got to send it in to me at De andersonthe fisherman.com or text it to the number on the screen and just make sure you give me the pertinent details like your name the size of the fish roughly where it was caught what you caught it on stuff like that we’ll get you in the magazine we’ll get you in the report and you may just walk away with a new plug uh this one’s going to wrap up on July 24th so you got lots of time to uh you know to catch that fish and take that great photo black flies and um we will pick a new winner on July 24th and uh you know until then you’ve got free ring try to compose a nice pick and send it in the coastal kayak Clash is back for 2024 November 30th get all the details at the fisherman.com moving over to the reports now um we’ve got some reports from Maine we’ve got some reports from Vermont uh first one’s coming out of Maine we’ve got some Shad running up a few of the rivers up there I think the Sako River has a run I think there’s a couple other ones out there that do as well but all of them seem to be running really well right now guys are doing uh guys are catching a lot of fish up there also um some of the big bait guys that I keep in touch with up in Maine have continued to just Crush big large mouth five and six pound fish day and night uh that bite just seems to be right at its peak right now in Maine so if you live in the area if you’re traveling through uh might be be a good time to bring the swimbait rod and see what you can catch jumping over to Vermont now uh there a guy on Instagram masterclass angling he’s a guide in the Champlain region his name is Drew price he’s a great follow great fisherman and uh I saw this week that uh you know a lot of proof that even way up north in uh you know the upper reaches of Vermont the fishing has been really good um had a nice piked this week had a bunch of bow Fin and uh again he’s a he’s a great follow so check him out if you if you’re on social media crossing the border now into Massachusetts let’s start things off with James Jes morning what a great morning it is I’m over here at the shaen hering count location and they’ve removed this Dam probably like 5 six years ago and I’ve been out here helping out long with a whole bunch of other people uh checking the accounts and sure enough wouldn’t you know this morning I got to see my first Herring come up through it was freaking awesome glad to help out uh and of course I’m out here with the local Urban turkeys as well oh Jesus fantastic anyways we we’ll get right back into the report here uh Shad fishing yesterday morning I didn’t do so well but the Herring was so thick I I couldn’t help bumping into them and catching them uh so it was a little strange with the Shad fishing I’m sure the guys in the afternoon hit some uh but I got to say uh did have a smallmouth by catch uh very nice on a Shad spoon it was awesome and uh so the GU getting large mouth in the river and Smallmouth and uh the pike have been off the hook I see one guy he had a 41 in Pike very nice fish uh a lot in the 36 to 40 in range really really good stuff uh I didn’t hear anything from the carp guys this week so we’ll see what that happens uh I will be going out for carp with uh The Plum Island surf casters on Saturday so we’ll see how that goes and uh everything else is cooking along and guess what we do have fresh stripers in the area oh yeah I’ve been out a half a dozen times I haven’t had one yet myself but I did get word from a couple of guys small fish which is fine but they are fresh and one had them uh out in the ocean front so we’ll see what happens I’m sure those are just swimming by up into the river uh it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing a a very big push uh I know the guys over in Salem and Boston and creeping up into kpn all those guys have seen fish so it’s on go time no screwing around and oh by the way um this isn’t early this is pretty typical uh of a season you know my last fish last year was May 1st so what are we two days ahead of schedule or a day ahead of schedule no no the Everything Is Right on Time doing their thing these freaking turkeys are crazy look at these things Jesus sorry to get sidetracked but this is uh anyways Dave thanks all righty talk to everyone later hook up and stay [Applause] [Music] tight now as James said this fresh fish have made their fresh stripers have made their way all the way to Plum Island which means by this time next week they should be in Southern Maine great news great time to be a striper fisherman you know it just makes you feel alive um but down south of Boston we saw a lot of strip basss this week as well some of them getting close to 30 in and by this time next week I would imagine we’ve got plenty of slot fish in that region uh jumping into the freshwater deal out there trout fishing continues to impress all throughout Plymouth out onto the Cape I know they did a bunch of their brood stock brown trout stocking uh over the last couple weeks so those are out there some really nice fish out there to be caught you know you might break six seven8 lounds with one of those and uh you know get the Battle of a of the freshwater Battle of your life um out on the cape proper uh checked in with the guys of the goose Ian was saying that they had uh they had good numbers of schoolies in some of the estuaries and tidle rivers out there paddle Tales were crushing it they were getting them on like the 3in and the 5 in nlbn uh White was a popular color uh also some stuff from zman was crushing it too like those Little Swimmers on uh on light jig heads and that’s you know it’s the best way to fish for smaller fish anyway you got the single hook crush the Barb get it back in the water as quickly as possible no need for a photo with those little guys uh heading back toward the canal um it’s been we’re in kind of like a holding pattern at the at the moment the Run has herring in it there are a few you know there’s a bunch of schoolies in the canal it’s probably a few fish around slot size I did see a video of a guy releasing a pretty good size fish looked to be about 15 lbs uh was caught as far as I can tell by the video at the Bourn Bridge um that’s so far that hasn’t been typical but uh for a little bit more on that let’s check in now with East and Eddie hi Dave here we are in the cape C Canal we got a uh West uh e tide this morning I’m a little bit east of the Bourn Bridge uh this weekend I saw one Bait fish jump out of the water but that was a good sign because uh there’s probably a predator underneath it a blue fish or maybe a schooly but this morning I saw quite a big break uh on the cape side way out of my range uh Ron ARA could have reached it but uh it was almost close right next to the U other side I’m on the mainland side it’s on the cape side and the fish was pushing water uh on the surface so it must have been chasing some bait um so I I I couldn’t tell how big it was it was definitely bigger than a a schoolie um but I can tell you one big fish story there’s no big fish in the canal yet but uh J Chang uh lives in Oklahoma and he fishes the canal whenever he can I think will be back here in September he’s a great surfcaster and a really good guy and uh in Oklahoma he fishes the rivers and uh so he’s plugging a river last week and using his bone colored um cotton Cordell that he loaded himself and as he’s plugging the river he gets a tremendous hit and he fights a ferocious battle with this fish brings it in it’s a 44lb striped bass now I’ve got a picture of it and it looks just like our fish the head might be a little bit different but it looks very similar to the uh strip of bass we catch in saltwater 44 lbs congratulations jera that was a ter terrific catch um I also just want to mention that uh I wrote a story for the uh fisherman magazine for the May issue in wingland Edition and uh I collaborated with Dave Anderson the great editor of this the fisherman magazine and uh you know he’s just a great guy that makes everything touches better he’s such a humble guy he didn’t even put his name on that uh my name is listed as the author on the story it’s all about the uh a review of the canal from last year and uh mentions a lot of famous canal rats and a lot of names you’ll recognize uh but I I I want to express my gratitude to Dave Anderson because he’s he’s such a thoughtful guy and uh although his name isn’t on the story his fingerprints are all over it so thank you Dave I also want to mention that my cousin John Kish owns uh Atlantic Boat boats and Stonebridge Marina in Wham and he’s having his annual open house uh at uh this this weekend May 4th from 9:00 to 3 so if you’re in the market for a boat he’s got new and used boats and all the uh accessories that go with them so stop by and you’ll get a great deal there from John um and I I just wanted to uh also uh give you my tip of the week which is uh you know whenever you’re tying a knot with fishing line you should always wet the knot just before you cinch it down um I make my own leaders in the winter time and I’ll just sit in the living room I got a little cup of water and uh I’m watching a ball game or something I’ll just dip the knot in there just before I’m about to tie it tight and that helps to uh make the knot Tighter and reduces friction and just makes for a better knot some guys spit on the line uh my wife frowns on spitting in the living room so she’s so fussy you know but anyway so I’m happy to use a little a cup of water it works for me so until next time try to catch a big one heading out into Buzzard’s Bay now um all these rivers that run into Buzzard’s Bay like the WEEI antic like the wam River uh like in the harbors too like matap poiser Harbor New Bedford Harbor Pyon Aram Harbor they all have stripe bass right now uh various sizes you get anything from like 18 in up to like 35 in um it’s been some good top water action paddletails are crushing it there as well and then out in the out in Buzzards Bay there’s a lot of to fishing going on we got a really nice fish from Jamie price looks like it’s probably pushing close to 9 lbs good size fish and I checked in with Jason Colby they had uh they had a bunch of tog this week and some codfish inore as well he’s moving his operation to ssue it now for some uh flounder action but uh and we’ll hear more about that next week but it is good to uh it’s good to see that tog bite just continuing to fire off now we’ll head Inland get a couple of uh now we’ll head inland and uh we’ll check in with Steve Regal from Steves UV leaves hey guys it’s Steve Regal from Steves UV leaves.com with your Conneticut River fishing report um started off pretty good last week uh numbers were were pretty good in the tributaries and then we got a couple of uh cold nights where we hit 30s and that slowed down the bike considerably almost shut it off uh but the last couple days we’ve been getting some decent warm nights in the in the 50s and the bite has turned on uh the tributaries both in Connecticut and Massachusetts have slowed down considerably but then main river bite the Connecticut River has picked up significantly uh with a lot of Anglers getting into double digits um you know in a couple hours you can pick up 20 30 40 fish if you’re in the right place at the right time um next week we looks like we got some decent weather coming in we’re going to be uh 40s at night and 60s and 70s during the day that could should keep the bike going on the main river so get out there and get them um stripers there’s been quite a few keeper stripers caught from all the way from Connecticut up to the hoo Dam um and it’s only going to get better as it as it as the river warms up a little bit over the next coming week uh there’s already bait in the river plenty of Shad stripers the Spring Run is on so get out there and get some fish um this is starting to look like it’s going to be a carbon copy of last year where it starts off decent and then uh because we didn’t have the snow pack up north it’s probably going to be a short season again this year unless we get some rain to add uh to the to the river uh it’s not looking good but take advantage of it while they’re here get out there catch some fish I’ll see you guys on the water [Music] and we’ll wrap up the Massachusetts Report with a freshwater breakdown from way out in western Mass here’s Roy Lea hey Dave Roy Lea here with this week’s western Mass report um I don’t know before we get to things uh you can see the river behind me this is the Connecticut River uh water levels are down uh quite a bit from what it was um and also there’s a lot of stripers and a lot of Shad in the river right now so um good time to get out and fish for those um on top of that the state is continuing to stock uh trout uh especially in some of the small rivers so a lot of brookies uh Browns um I’m sure they’re probably going to be done soon though uh but that fishing continues to be strong um the one thing with the water levels coming down uh this week I think Monday we almost had 80 degrees or we did hit 80 degrees so that’s warming things up really really quick so uh you know on the good side plus side small mouth bass are starting to move in Shallow uh on the Rough Side large mouth bass are starting to move in Shallow to spawn so um I’m not a bed fisherman um and I’ve seen a lot of big large mouth in the shallows uh this week uh they just they don’t want to do anything but run from you um they’ve got one thing in mind and that’s to uh produce uh but on top of that uh crappie are in the middle of their spawning um there’s still some on beds most of them have moved off I I don’t know if it’s because of the overcast or what um or they’re just almost done completely uh a lot of panish Sunfish all that that’s all moving in tight close to shore they’re starting to build beds uh so I’ve seen a lot of cart moving um the other thing both and bothen have actually come out uh I Target them a little bit this week uh and got six six uh five and lost one so um close enough to six uh but that uh that’s been it it for this week um I’m guessing you know it’s going to continue to be this way uh until until next week uh especially if these if the weather stays the way it is cuz water temps are just going to keep going up uh I didn’t I I I haven’t fished yet today so I’m going to throw the thermometer but I’m pretty sure it’s probably mid-50s right now in some of the uh shallow Coes and probably hitting 50 everywhere else so uh black flies are out um and mosquitoes so that sucks all right catch you guys next week peace crossing the border into Rhode Island we’ll start things off with an East Bay report from TJ copi thanks Steve hey guys uh nice to be back again got a uh got a good fishing report this week uh things have kind of been up and down depending on what species you’ve been fishing for in the bay or whether it’s nansa Bay or Mount H Bay uh first I’m going to start out with um it’s the second year for me I um I joined this uh sport angler data collection team for the state of Massachusetts um I I think it’s a fun thing for me to do what I do is if I catch a stripe bass I will take uh a couple scale samples put it on there just date it time what the length was whether I kept it or released it whether you know if it’s a keeper or not and um I send this back in and they do studies on stripe bass uh it’s pretty much to you know help our help the species uh survive a little bit better and uh if you’re interested they’re always looking for ambassadors to help them do their study it’s not only striped bass but they give you this uh this logging sheet uh which you log everything that you catch and you put it on you write it down on here whether it’s black sea bass fluke scup Bluefish um and pretty much the only one you need a scale sample from is the stripe bass uh just to help them study but they also want to know what else you’re catching out there um in Massachusetts waters for all my Massachusetts followers um on the south coast there um it’s something fun to do and you can go to just a Mas of recreational saltwater fish and contact his uh Kimberly fi and uh reach out to her and uh they’ll send you a kit in the mail and uh basically they they send you like a couple little trinkets every year and uh this year was the uh the circle hook and uh you know pretty much goes over you know circle hook save strip bass and uh you know we all know we got to use these if you’re using any kind of live bait uh presentation for them so um last year was a nice little towel you can hang on your boat so you know I’m happy to be at least helping out with the strip bass in my community here um moving on to reports well we’ll stick in Mount H Bay uh since we’re talking about Massachusetts listen there’s plenty of bass around we all know that um you have to find the hauns it was a little bit tough to find them this weekend um in the p a couple of days before the weekend came in because the weather’s been up and down it got cold the surface temperatures were down to 48 those fish they you know they got lock your start looking more towards Spar Island uh towards the Kohl’s River the Lees River the mouth of them is the water’s always a little bit warmer up in there start looking up in the tarton river up near the old Bri Street Bridge there’s been a lot of pogies in there a lot of big pogies not just uh little peanut bunk but there’s some big pogies in there so there’s got to be some big bass uh I tried to reach out to a couple of my contacts who fished up the there and they they hadn’t caught anything uh really substantial to actually report on so uh look around Spar Island this time of year I go back I look at my records I know I caught a lot of fish around that where the Ki River opens up where the son River opens up get on a common fence Point around there there’s been a lot of bass around moving towards the bay underneath the mold bridge look into Bristol Harbor around uh Hog Island there’s always a little show there that always holds a lot of bass I’m not giving out all the secrets or anything it’s just it’s common knowledge for if you fish out there you know uh get towards the east side of prudence Island on the the on the Bayside looking towards Colt State Park there’s a couple of nice boulder fields in there that will hold bass early in the season and they’ll gang up and just start eating all the bait that comes by there a lot of good Ambush points look there uh baits to use up around there or would be uh bucktails um p a lot of paddle Tails have been working uh for everybody lately um also try to get your um subsurface swimmers and maybe some top water action I got a couple squirrels on in the barington river this weekend when I was fishing for stripe bass I didn’t connect with anything though uh I did better with paddletails so up in the barington river the worm River getting up into there uh there’s been a worm hatch and uh some of the stuff that’s been working and I’m going to just show you a couple little tricks that I use uh if you read my article on the barington road uh I shared a bunch of stuff about the the cinder worm hatch um something I do try and I’ve connected with is this uh gulp jerk Shad right here and it’s in a uh a root beer color um it’s definitely the same exact color as the cinder worms that they’re eating and I I actually found this I I couldn’t find this this color around here I found it in Florida when I was in Florida and I grabbed a couple packs and I brought them and these things I connected with them uh another other thing from G is the Gul sand worm here that works okay and if it’s too long I just cut it down and I use a weightless hook I just let it do its own thing out there and you can catch fish and if the worms are a little bit bigger there’s also this Berkeley power bait 8 in power sand worm now I like to use these when I’m trolling a tube and worm to uh it’s a little bit cheaper than it does a worm sometimes and they last a little bit longer and I I tend to find that the blue fish don’t don’t bite them off as much so quick little tips for you on the cinder worm hatch U there’s tons of bait everywhere um getting over to T fishing T fishing kind of slowed it got better now uh a lot of guys have been fishing uh the M hope Bridge my buddy uh Todd had a couple of nice fish today um and uh I I’ll tell you it it wasn’t good at all on Sunday when I was out there I tried to fish Hope Island and uh I tell you we’re getting blown around the the winds uh were just not not favorable with the tide so uh we didn’t have a good day and it was cold but uh I tell you going forward I I think um in the salt water the the bass bik just going to get better we’re going to get some bigger bass moving in now that all these pogis are in there moving around I think we’re going to get a good good mix of bigger bass uh coming in so just be on the watch for that and uh I’m sure there’s going to be some Bluefish right on there tail too um I I’ve caught Bluefish um the first week of May uh two years ago and uh that was a a good week that we had a good pushup bait so uh if you’re out there and you’re fishing uh East Bay is the place to be for the salt water all right and we’ll catch you guys next week tight lines now this has been a windfall week in nansa Bay in other words we’re seeing lots and lots of stripers moving into the bay and uh over the last like five or six days we’ started to see more of those bigger fish so more like 18 to 25 lb fish and there’s been a few rumors of fish touching 30 lbs up inside the bay which I don’t doubt there a lot of Bunker up there which is great to see this early and with the like dir of Bunker that they had in uh New Jersey this year I have a feeling these we’re going to see a lot of fish coming into the bay earlier and we’re going to see them staying longer which is a good thing uh might be a great year for targeting some Giants in there against at Bay so keep your eyes open for that uh right now the bite’s pretty widespread you can get them up in the Providence River you get them down toward Warwick they’re up inside the barington river they’re around Bristol they’re in Mount Hope Bay they’re up in the Taunton River they’re down the saonet um that doesn’t mean you can go out there with a blindfold on and just cast W wildly and catch a fish but it does mean that there are many different concentrations of fish throughout the bay and guys are getting them on top waterers get them on paddle tailes again very popular bait right now and um seen a lot of guys doing it from the Y I know Dustin Stevens has been pretty much doing it daily and uh putting some good fish on the boat so a lot of good striper action out that way one person I know that’s really been on that bite is coral aello uh from Sarah star Charters we’re going to bring her back again uh here’s her first video of 2024 here she is hi Dave Coral here from sarasara Charters with my first fishing report for RH island of the season um these last few weeks have definitely been heating up uh there has been a lot of bait um in the Upper Bay in nanet um for the last few weeks now and um now we’re starting to get fresh fish um these last few weeks um a lot of schoolies have been caught um a lot of people working in the upper Bays you know a lot of top water feeds um using the spoons um using live bait and um these bigger fish are really starting to explode now um I think today I’ve gotten reports that um you know some 40in uh fish were caught and this is just going to happen overnight and um this is usually what we see this time of year the only thing that is definitely a little slower this time of year is the tat bite so the water temperatures are a little chilly um it’s just this you know the weather that we’ve been having it’s been pretty nice during the day but at night it’s been getting really cold and so it hasn’t really allowed the water temperature to warm up for these T to really start chewing and we are getting them but um it’s pretty sparce and you really have to work for the bite um but we are getting limits you just have to work a little bit bit harder for them I’m thinking within the next week or two with this warmer weather and the temperatures the water temperatures Rising um that the bite’s really going to take off and hopefully we’ll get a good may bite for T um as far as shore fishing goes it’s definitely um right on schedule as it was last year um catching them from Shore um a lot of liced up fish you know they’re starting to get bigger I caught one the other night that was in the 33in range um so yeah we’re definitely seeing what we normally see this time of year and you know it’s really going to to explode within the next week or so now it’s not all stripers that’s uh that are happening we’ve also got a lot of tog reports I saw a couple double digit fish come out of uh Rhode Island Waters this week still a lot of fish up inside the bay so uh if you’re a togger you got lots of options and um unlike Connecticut which is already closed we’ve still got plenty of season left so get out there and make it happen uh these fish are being caught on a variety of baits you don’t have to use crabs you can get them on crabs but you can also get them on worms you can get them on clams you can get them on squid we don’t have a lot of interference fish around there are a few scups showing up in the uh in the sconet rivers probably a few scattered around other places but uh for the most part you don’t have to worry about them and uh you can throw whatever you want and uh still got a shot at getting a tog in fact listen to this um Larry Thompson one of our regular uh contributors guy sends me photos all the time and it’s a really nice guy uh he was fishing outside of quani this week and he said the Tog fishing was incredible they were using Asian crabs they were smashing them they said they got more Keepers and shorts which is awesome uh he said he even got one on a uh on a slow pitch jig so that kind of shows how aggressive these fish are right now and uh proves that it’s a great time to get out there to Target some tog but it’s not just saltwater Rhode Island either we’re hearing a lot of good fish a lot of big largemouth bass probably one of the best guys at it is Jeff Sullivan so let’s check in with him right now hey Dave what’s happening Jeff back with a weekly video this week um I got a short a video um um I just been doing a lot of largemouth fishing 95% of my days and nights are devoted to Largemouth um I mean we just had a full moon and now we’re in the back back half of the full moon which is even better I always love a back half of a full moon and the warm day we just had really jump started things in the gear um I mean when you have warm weather it brings more life um it’s just been going off it’s been on like Donkey Kong as they like to say um I mean fish between four and eight PBS that’s that’s awesome um these these fish are monsters um it’s it’s a good thing to see um but yeah that’s pretty much where I’ve been devoting all my time to right now um I did get the old ninja costume out the old wet suit my plug bag ready I am ready for the big fish and I’m looking I’m you know look I’m probably going to be looking around this week for some some bigger bigger class fish so so uh my striper season will be um going very very very soon so um my buddy’s been to tog fishing he’s been doing good he’s been getting monster fish under an under 10 ft of water which uh you find a rock or a dock you’ll find a tog this time of year that’s what I like to say um my tog season hopefully fingers cross um my tog season starts this week um I’m praying um hopefully everything goes good with the boat I think we’re going to Splash the boat today so hopefully things go good um but yeah so uh same time next week oh and I did do some squiding last night um there’s a lot a lot of squid around um and there’s a lot of poies and a lot of Heron a lot of Heron so there’s no shortage of bait out there guys if you go out there whatever you want to Target right now you name it you put the time in you will get them um I’m just doing like I said I’m doing a lot of large mouth right now it’s they’re my uh they’re my favorite fish to catch ever so I I love this time of year for big bass it’s just makes me tick um but yeah with that being said um you know you go out there and spend the time and you will get the fish you will get rewarded and they’re going to be monster fish I promise you that um so yeah same time next week guys hopefully have a report from you from the boat which would be pretty cool um but yeah all right thanks Dave I’m not getting a lot of reports from Black Island yet um no one’s really fluke fishing yet seab bass isn’t open uh but as you get along the Southshore beaches and along the breach ways a lot of stripe bass activity there as well got these great photos from the guys over at breachway B Bait and Tackle showing a bunch of different guys uh cashing in on the striper bite on the breach ways so that’s something you guys can definitely cash in on also got great trout fishing still throughout Rhode Island still plenty of golden trout out there as well um and he still got you know another week before the golden trout pin thing wraps up so if you get a if you get a golden trout take a picture send it into uh Connecticut d and or Dem I should say and uh and you get a gold pen in the mail which is pretty cool thing and that’s what I have for you guys in Rod Island this week moving over into Connecticut now uh let’s start things off with our Herring expert here’s Kevin job thanks Dave uh standing here in a lwi stream in Connecticut got some spawning going on behind me here you can see uh temperatures are there this is an aif run these fish will probably really be finishing up with their run I’d say by the end of the week here in these small coastal streams water’s warm water’s getting low fish have been running now since March so it’s you know the end is pretty much in sight for these fish um Blue Back Herring runs are you know abysmal in the state again this year um we’re seeing some fish in the Connecticut River we’re doing a project out there with us fish and wildlife and we’re coming AC cross some fish but again our our smaller rivers that historically had blue back Herring we’re not seeing fish again this year um so this year for elwives was slightly better than last year in some of our streams slightly worse in other streams it’s going to equal out to maybe being just a little bit better than last year the one promising thing that I am noticing this year is when we’re sampling these fish we are seeing some bigger fish which points to better survival so hopefully in the coming years here maybe these you know these larger fish or prolific spawners um they historically have more eggs and better survival so I’m hoping that maybe we are starting to see signs of I’m not going to say recovery but better than we were the last 3 years which were just terrible returns um but again this year like I said um the places that we trucked fish to to try and reestablish run 3 years ago um we had better returns at those sites than we have the last 2 years um during similar stocking efforts so that was good to see and I’m hoping that’s pointing to better survival at Sea um but yeah again anyone who’s fishing the alwi runs for stripers your time is closing so get out there in the next couple of nights and these fish are they’re spawning really heavy today so they are going to be dropping out of the systems tonight and over the next few nights um so I would very much put your time in if you have stripers on the mind cuz this is this is the time to get out there um you know we we don’t have our really hot Mays and early Junes with the blue backs anymore just because we don’t have blue backs um the numbers are just very small if you can find them there’s going to be bass on them so all right thanks I’ll talk to you guys next week it’s kind of funny how the Eastern sound is always sort of the last place to totally fill in with stripers there are stripers there they have been for a few weeks we’re just starting to see uh you know more a better population of fish larger size fish like up around 30 in uh so that’s something you can do around Bluff Point up inside the themes going up into Niantic Bay and then heading over more toward the Connecticut River there there’s fish all throughout that region uh togging ended with a bang as it always does but is now closed in Connecticut so uh you’re going to have to say goodbye to that fishery for now uh still good catches of flounder being uh logged throughout uh Connecticut Waters I would say it’s above average um not a lot of guys doing it just because the limit is so small just two fish per angler uh but they’re out there to be had and um and that’s been pretty cool to see out more toward the Connecticut River we got plenty of striper action to talk about and we’ll start things off with a report from Captain Mike Roy at real cash Charters hey what’s up everybody this week I’m fishing in Panama at Toucan Lodge we’ve been catching yellow fent tuna CU Snappers whole bunch of different inshore species some different types of groupers uh different Jacks African pompel whole bunch of different species as far as the fishing back in Long Island Sound the stripers should be starting to migrate in they’ve dropped out of their winter holdover areas and things are starting to get active the sound temperatur is now in the low 50s um expect to see the first weak fish caught this week if they haven’t already been caught will be going into full swing when I get home next week fishing for stripers Bluefish weak fish and everything else so contact us to book a trip heading up the Connecticut River lots of different Fisheries going on up there the carp fishing has been great uh you got plenty of smallmouth bass still around um there’s some stripers that are heading way up you got Shad um and for a little bit more on all the things happening Inland let’s check in now with Rowan Lidle hey everybody uh so now we’re look at some much much warmer weather this week into next week uh some slightly cooler nights uh but good daytime highs bringing up the water temperature the Connecticut River has dropped substantially so the main stem of the river should be getting pretty fishable here uh all the tributaries have cleared up for the most part uh much much lower uh not a lot of debris in the water uh and the fishing has been pretty good for bass bofin carp just about everything channel catfish bite is starting to light up uh but just about everything is happening this is one of those real good times of year so whatever your target species uh now is kind of the time as far as the contic river goes uh just about everything should be chewing with the increasing water temperatures uh lowering water level and uh everything’s looking up for our good mid part of spring here and lastly out down toward the mouth we’ll check in with Matt Stone from black Hall Outfitters in fact this is in his car he’s waiting to go in for jury duty so say a little prayer from Matt here’s this report what’s up everyone Matt here from black Hall Outfitters with this week’s fishing report um tog season in Connecticut is officially closed now that we’re into May so if you want to get some Blackfish you’re going to have to go to some of our neighboring states like Rhode Island where the bite is typically pretty good in May um here in the central sound we are seeing increased strip bass action uh as the weather warms up we’re getting some much warmer nights um what we really need is more sunshine I think to get that water temp kind of rising pretty quickly um you can all see the buds are blooming things are ready to pop here so I think it’s not going to take much to really you know kind of have a catalyst moment and change it into a really nice May fishery for us um we’re going to get increasing surface action from those stripers a few more fish you know in the 30 plus inch range are going to probably become active um the Herring runs are also going to be an increasingly important factor you’re going to start to see larger bass around the Herring runs throughout the month of May um don’t be afraid to throw some bigger plugs um big Glide baits work really well around the Herring runs um top water’s in the right conditions still your same paddle tailes twitch baits things like that um the new tsunami 5 in uh twitch bait is going to work really well this time of year that’s one that’s easy to pick up and use if you’re not familiar with that type of bait um and yeah that’s kind of where we’re at right now things are ramping up uh it should get pretty good here in the next month May is a um you know start slow and then happens all at once kind of month for us and uh you know in a few weeks here we’re going to be talking about a whole lot of exciting stuff so good luck enjoy the nice weather we have ahead of us and have fun out there heading west from there uh strip bass fishing just gets better and better as we head West get more opportunities for bigger fish also lots of trout being caught Inland um Connecticut does a phenomenal job stocking as they always do this year has been no exception lots of happy trout fishermen out there as you get out toward the the toward mil uh Milford Norwalk islands and then further you know uh further down in the marinic and places like that um seeing a lot more bigger fish we’re seeing fish in the 20 to 25 even crossing the 30 lb barrier a lot of fish being taken on butter spoons uh which has been really cool also seen a few wheat fish taken up in some of the estuaries for a little bit more on all that let’s check in now with Max Finch from Fisherman’s World hey everyone Max here from Fisherman’s World with another local fisherman report this past week we had a lot of schools of strip bass push through our area down to our rest off captains to Hemstead Ry down to the bridges remain really good a lot of guys are cashing on some pretty nice catches we’ve seen some fish over 30 lbs uh shop employee Tyler this past week had a mid 20 lb fish at 11 be on the flutter spoons it’s been really good if you time it right with the outgoing you have some pretty fantastic jig and bite the Blackfish is still open guys are using clams and sand worms you know it’s been good we’ve heard some you know decent fish this week too like 5 six SB range and then you know this coming weekend coming up uh the fluke opener opens up so look to you know fish shallow especially along like Sherwood Island man recet power plant small buck Tails Tipp with squid and spearing a lot of guys like shooting across to Smithtown Bay fishing you know the golf course area and then all along the beaches all the way up to Port Jeff thanks and good luck that’s what I have for you guys in the reports this week hopefully it’s going to inspire you to get out there I
