Wyndham Clark has ‘off day’ in The Players Championship Rd. 3 | Live From The Players | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1
well this course obviously Demands a lot
from a player you’re a worldclass player
what did you do to meet the challenge
today um you know obviously guys clearly
played well today lot of five six seven
eight unders um you know it was just
kind of my off day I missed a couple
short putts early and then that wedge on
17 but outside of that I thought I
played pretty solid you know it
was it’s it’s a hard golf course and I
um you know I think you’re going to have
one poor round out here and that was
hopefully just my one po round ask about
17 not to harp the negatives was that
was that a was that just a miss or a
miscalculation it was a i chunked it it
was a user error um we were John I’m not
putting him throwing him under the bus
at all but he thought if I hit a full
Sand Wedge there’s a chance it could get
on top and so kind of last minute he’s
like hey just a little bit off of a a
stock and so as I was kind of at the top
of my swing I was like okay little off
and I ended up kind of desing and
chunking it so I mean that was
unfortunate but I mean honestly come
pretty much dropping the ball and making
a birdie from there was was huge and I
think kept me in the tournament you said
you didn’t maybe have your aame today at
least compared to everyone else but
still your Bame was good enough to keep
you in this Championship how important
was that heading into tomorrow yeah it’s
huge I
mean yeah it would been nice to go shoot
5 six seven under and have um two three
four shot lead but if you would have
told me at the beginning of the week I’d
be right there up for the lead and um or
near the lead in the final group on
going into Sunday you take it so I’m I
love where I’m at and I’m hoping I
hoping um I kind of flip the script and
have a xan around tomorrow uh final F
guy you obviously know how to win you’ve
won three times in the last year um and
you’ve been in the final group just most
recently uh or final few groups last
week forget about the mechanics or even
strategy mentally and emotionally what
do you hope to be committed to
tomorrow um I just hope my mind is a
little more uh a little more focused
tomorrow was a little little aloof today
and um you know and then really just
being um just really present and kind of
you know not worried about score and out
come I I found found myself maybe
wondering off a little too much and so
I’m hoping tomorrow I’m kind of laser
locked in and um can really throw a
great round at Xander rest well we’ll
see you tomorrow thank you window
awesome
thanks uh not his best offu Paul but he
held firm
two times that he hit it in the water at
12 and 17 showed some Moxy made the par
at 12 and that huge bogey at number 17
what’s your takeaway H my takeaway was a
guy not on his game today he was in a
difficult position with a four shot lead
H in a huge tournament it’s not an easy
place to be everybody Tiger Wood
included struggled with leads and know
they got the job done but it never was a
case of I’m winning by four now I’m
going to win by seven that’s rare that
that happens um so there’s a lot of
pressure a lot of a lot of uh intensity
there uh coming down his shoulder the
golf course was yielding a lot of
birdies guys were on the front foot with
nothing to lose they were able to hunt
them down and you can feel the footsteps
coming behind you right know we’ve been
there and when you’re leading a
tournament you and you’re not quite on
it and the footsteps of everybody making
birdies and the cheers ringing around
the golf course in these sellout crowds
today I’m sure had an effect on him so
as he’s admitted there himself I think
he’s lost a bit of focus today h
culminated with his t-shot here duffing
it into the water on 17 not on his
striving not on his iron play Battle
like hell he’s still there at there
abouts I think he’s going to reset and
come back different Tomorrow there’s a
different Dynamic at Play Because as I
say you know now now now he’s the hunter
not the haunted and that is a
psychological difference and I think
he’ll relish that tomorrow I I I you
know I don’t think he’s going to have a
bad day again tomorrow he’s going to go
tomorrow and I’m think in Xander or
anybody else is going to have to go to
we are in a Sprint here tomorrow mhm you
know he had the luxury of a big lead so
he could uh you know suffer uh let’s say
just an average round by his standards
and still be in the mix he also has the
luxury of unbelievable power remember
all these people you hear it all the
time golly I wish we had trackman data
for Tiger in 2000 well we we don’t have
the data but we do have somebody with
movement patterns variables that add
Force to the golf club very much in the
same vein as Tiger Woods and that is
wendam Clark we’ll go back to when he
won at the AT&T here he is at the 18th
hole in route to shooting that marvelous
60 of course he hit this uh beautiful
iron shot into the 18th hole and had
this putt for 59 I want to dive into in
deeper to this golf swing I want to take
a look at the variables that allow him
to add Force to the club and they remind
me of tiger watch the way his head moves
up in the transition okay this is kind
of kyl burkus but a little bit he’s he’s
forcing the club up but in transition
here’s what I want to focus on we’re
going to toggle this back and forth see
how his upper body and lower body crunch
together he’s got this ab crunch okay
you see that that angle has increased
between the upper and the lower body
he’s pressuring into the ground right
there okay he’s getting down low he’s
getting into the ground he’s flexing the
legs it’s almost like like you said
let’s see how high you can jump that’s
how best you’d squat down and from there
you can use the ground to extend and
rotate that is stunning right there so
let’s roll in Tiger Woods from well his
greatest ROM his greatest victory in
2015 stroke win here he is at the 18th
hole and again I want you to watch the
movement patterns from the upper and the
lower body how they crunch together now
this is the advantage of YouTube this
generation have over previous
generations this is Tiger’s progy Windam
Clark you see how that upper body and
lower body is crunching down right there
how his knees are flexed just like
Windam C that’s pressuring into the
ground right there and from there you
can rotate and extend use the ground
movement patterns I hear people talk
about stability all the time give me
variables that increase Force those
variables will beat stability five and
four and send them packing that’s
beautiful now the downside is when you
got that kind of movement when you got
that kind of power you’re going to
straight from the Fairway occasionally
but the advantage is when you’re out of
the Fairway you got all this power you
got power where you can hold off the
face Windham Clark first round thickest
rough doesn’t this look like Tiger Woods
how many times we see Tiger Woods pull
off Miracles like that go to his knees
do the whirly bird run out in the
Fairway Chase it down Chase it up to the
green that was stunning anybody that’s
been there knows that you could just
leave it right in that rough or snap
hook it over in that bunker watch Cory
Connors at the first hole to day drove
it in the right rough he only moved
about 5 ft in the exact same space or
thereabouts as Windam Clark he did a
little bit better than moving at 5T
this is what 122 to upwards of 125 mph
Club head speed with a driver will do
for you not only does he have the power
to get out of there but he can maintain
the stability of the face stuffs it in
there looked like he’d make bogey but he
made birdie let’s go back to AT&T again
and have a bit of fun this a guy
shooting 60 he wasn’t right down the
middle of the Fairway and on the greens
every single time not at all here he is
at the 10th after turning in an
unbelievable number of under par looked
like he might have some trouble at the
tent no stuffs it in there for a
beautiful birdie for to the 13th hit a
big hook way over to the left coming out
of the thick stuff to a back right hole
location ho location that’s trough to
access from the middle of the Fairway
but again the right angle the right
speed it doesn’t shut the face down it
is so easy out of that thick rough to
get the face shut down you got to have a
lot of speed you got to have a lot of
strength to do that this might have been
my favorite shot on that Sunday on that
back nine with inclimate weather coming
thinking this might be the last round
the thought was there for everybody and
right out of that rough to the back pin
of course he made that now I want to
talk about belief power is one thing
belief is another get to the 12 hole
today gets up on the tea waterers left
right this is as enticing as it gets
they move the tea up and a wonderful
move how we saw a lot of variable shots
today balls in the water we saw eagles
saw shots out but this is not what you
want to see coming out of the barrel but
what I want to focus on is the very next
t- shot he had with water left look
where he’s lining up here look at he’s
lined up just inside the bunker think
about the belief it takes when you just
snapped hooked your previous shot into
the water to stand up on that tea and
you’ve erased everything you got the
what is that the memory of the Goldfish
10sec Memory reset like that powerful
drive right there absolutely obliterated
that some 320 yards and that belief was
on display again he said he wasn’t there
today wasn’t completely focused had some
miscues we saw the shot at at the 12
find the water this one I don’t know if
I’ve seen a worst shot into the 17th
hole but what was so impressive was in
the thick of things last group on
Saturday that kind of shot will
absolutely stun you to regroup get up
there and have the belief to go back to
work everybody’s impoverished by
comparisons to Tiger Woods that that
doesn’t mean that we can’t still use it
from time to time Tiger Woods always
going to represent the bar but that was
very Tiger esque standing up there
erasing all negative doubt and just like
tiger wood turning what looked like was
going to be in a double or a triple into
one of the best Bogies if he wins by one
tomorrow we may point to shots on Sunday
but it may very well be that right there
coming down the stretch and think about
it if he does win tomorrow he’d be in
the most unusual position uh as a
master’s rookie next month and one of
the two or three favorites I would think
he’s going to have to deal with among
others Xander Schley this appears to be
quite a dog fight tomorrow Paulie yeah I
mean it’s a great breakdown there by uh
by brandle and it’s what we’ve been
highlighting all week about his
resilience and the mental strength that
this guy has you know we talk again I’m
going to use the term I’m sorry for
overplaying it if I am you know front
foot back foot all these guys are
brilliant on the front foot they can
play Great Golf when you’re feeling good
we’ve all felt good as golfers everybody
out there in TV Land as well knows what
it’s like when things are going well the
game feels easy your mind is simple it’s
the hard thing when you’re in the middle
of battle and you’re leading a
tournament and you don’t quite have it
and to be able to dig something out of
the dirt and you know tiger had a had an
expression of going to work you got to
go to work and and and I and I think
brandle just totally uh nailed that
there with with that breakdown that
resilience that ability to wash it out
of your head and get back in again and
reset that’s the key that’s why I talk
so much about about Scotty Sheffer and
that ability with for bounceback Ability
it’s why I love that statistic so much
it’s the one stat that really looks into
the window and soulle of a golfer and um
you know that’s a great uh great
observations there brandle and and I
love the fact that you know he hits it
in the water on 12 and he stands up on
14 and just bomb he hits a little power
fade down there absolutely that shows
belief that shows the character of the
guy he’s not finished yet I know today
wasn’t a good day he’s going to come
back um but you know there’s some tur
breads now that he’s invited back into
the race he had kind of pushed him out
of the race and come on guys you come on
in I’m going to show you all and uh
we’re going to make a fun day of it and
uh that’s good for all of
us
