Hi everyone, welcome to the Strike Savvy YouTube Channel. The goal of this YouTube channel is to analyze fights, fighters and other stuff in MMA through the visualization of data.
I’d like to say first that this video is in no way meant to bash or discredit a particular fighter that was mentioned in this video. Even though I present a lot of statistics in this video to prove my point, the final conclusion is still my own opinion. This video was created out of love for the sport. Comment your opinions below but please be respectful when sharing them.

UFC 300 just wrapped up and boy did it
deliver an absolute spectacle of a night
that saw all types of crazy finishes and
fights that had us all longing for more
from Alex pereira’s intelligent knockout
of Jamal Hill a moment that proved me
and many other analysts wrong to the
gritty performance of Jang way Lee that
opened up a few chinks in the armor for
the champion however despite all the
crazy fights that happened in this one
card one fight stood out well above the
others a fight between two well-known
Titans throwing it all on the line for
this what is this what is the BMF title
to the critical eye it may just seem
like something the UFC made up so they
could sell more pay-per-views for Islam
makev the BMF title is just for bums but
the BMF title serves a purpose Beyond
just mere marketing it’s a celebration
of the fighters who embody the essence
of toughness resilience and a
willingness to engage in fun and
thrilling battles and at UFC 300 Max
Holloway and Justin gagei did just that
they left it all in the Octagon in a
fight that saw both Fighters get hurt
bad at some points Holloway getting
knocked down for the first time in his
career although not statistically and to
top it all off we got one of the
greatest knockouts in UFC history
so let’s talk about it in this video
we’re going to break down the stats and
fight between Max Holloway and Justin
gagei and find out what
happened rather than waiting out his
well-deserved Undisputed title shot at
155 lb Justin gagei chose to be true to
the BMF title and accepted a fight
against a former featherweight champion
in Max Holloway but unlike the wars he’s
been in for the past few years that saw
him knock out multiple Fighters and some
of the most violent way as possible in
this fight he faced quite a challenge
Justin gagei was fighting a lot
differently than in previous fights but
not in the typical sense let me explain
while his strike distribution for his
fight against Max appeared typical of a
gagei fight with a significant emphasis
on head strikes and effective leg kicks
his head strike accuracy was notably
lower than previous fights landing at a
36% rate to the head rather than his
typical 50% a 14 percentage Point drop
marking this Knight as his least
accurate when it comes to head strikes
in his entire career in the
UFC but it wasn’t just gai’s accuracy
that suffered in this fight his strike
output was also notably lower than what
fans come to expect from him in fact
this fight marked the lowest strikes
landed per minute in any of his fights
in UFC history the man renowned for his
five round cardio and unyielding
resilience found himself unable to
summon that same ferocity against Max
Holloway but why the answer lies in a
single moment that would come to define
the trajectory of the entire fight a
moment that unfolded at the end of the
first round Max’s spinning back kick a
technique often used to create distance
in his fights capitalized on a subtle
but critical flaw in gai’s approach gaii
has a habit of of Dipping or rolling his
head whenever he tries to go in for a
blitz that leaves him vulnerable to
uppercuts or knees at first this kick
seemed to just land to Gage’s chest
which although hurts a lot would have
been something gayi would recover from
in the break between rounds but this
kick wasn’t just some ordinary
significant strike to the body this kick
actually connected to Gage’s head first
because of his role and in turn
shattered his
nose so with four rounds to go and at
the break of the first round gaii had
two options option one Justin gagei
tries to blow his nose clear out his
nostrils risk a fate like cowboy against
Tony Ferguson and the fight is ruled to
TKO or option two endure the discomfort
of breathing through the mouth opting
for a slower paced but resilient
approach to the fight and for the sake
and pleasure of the fight fans the BMF
incumbent chose the latter refusing to
let this adversity dictate the course of
his Destiny you have to be in awe of
Justin Gage’s heart but unfortunately it
did come with its own set of
consequences because not only did Justin
gagei endure his worst offensive
performance in his UFC career but
defensively he faltered as well only
Landing second to his fight against
Charles Olivera continuously eating
clean uppercuts counter shots and even
at one point looked like Calvin Kar
against Max
Holloway okay we get it Gage’s nose was
broken by some free kick by Max which
didn’t allow him to go all in with his
savagery or even be the most defensively
sound but is it really safe to say that
this was the whole reason why he was
losing because although gaii seemed off
Max Holloway was having an amazing
performance at UFC 300 unlike his fights
before that average to your typical UF
UFC boxer in this fight Max Holloway was
keeping Justin gagei guessing by using
all parts of his body to tango looking
at his strike distribution for his fight
against gaii we see a very different Max
hallway an adapted Max that took a much
more balanced approach not only did we
see his crosses to the head and body but
most surprisingly is that we saw him
capitalize on some of Gage’s weaknesses
by using his uppercuts and spinning
kicks his unique addition of the leg
kick to maintain his distance also
contributed to Gage’s slow strike output
yet Perhaps more impressive than his
varied style was Holloway’s strike
accuracy Landing his strikes at a
whopping 58% efficiency it was one of
the most accurate performances we’ve
ever seen him in only falling short to a
few notable fights and some others near
the start of his
career however this offensive prowess
came at a cost as Holloway also endorsed
one of his worst defensive performances
to date despite Holloway’s offensive
Onslaught on gai he still remained quite
a challenge Landing strikes more
efficiently than many of Max Holloway’s
previous opponents a testament to Gage’s
skill and resilience especially in the
face of adversity as the fifth round of
the epic battle between Max Holloway and
Justin gagei Drew to a close Holloway
found himself clearly ahead on the scor
cards yet rather than coing to Victory
he chose to risk it all by engaging toet
to Toe with one of the most dangerous
Strikers in the UFC which ultimately
culminated in one of the greatest
knockouts of all time defeating not just
one of the most feared men in the
lightweight division but also defeating
this notion that he once had pillow
hands however nothing can compare Max
Holloway’s 10-second risk at the end of
the fifth to the whole 3mon risk that
Justin gatei took when he first accepted
this fight you have to feel bad for the
guy he’s long awaited to become
Undisputed champion and took this BMF
title fight with no real benefit to him
and at 35 years old his chances are
starting to crawl away from him rest up
Justin gagei and know that many of us
are still rooting for you to come back
and challenge for that title and as for
Max hallway welcome to the new world of
possibilities if you want to know more
about Max holay and his significant
strike record there will be a link in
the description or something should pop

Gaethe made over $2 mil on that fight for defending an actual legit belt. Why does everyone assume this belt isn’t a legit belt. Max didn’t get ppv because he’s not a champion all champions now get ppv belts and with 155 always being held up over the last few year for a few months during the year it kills viewership over years. This belt is a belt for non not huggers. No one buys nut hugger main events unless the nut hugger is going against a top tier ppv draw that’s facts. Ppv suffers because too much jut hugging.
This channel has big secret base energy… love it
The judge who gave round 2 to gaethje is an absolute tool
What did the data show for just round 1? I’m curious if what we all suspect the difference being his broken nose (an eye poke in each eye during round 2 didn’t help I’m sure) was demonstrated in the numbers. Also, I didn’t have Max up by 4 rounds going in to the 5th before the KO.
Thank you for the work you did to compile this data. For a nerd like me, I especially appreciate it. Well done man 👏🏽👏🏽
Justin accepting this fight, reminds me of when Edgar decided to fight T-City, rather than wait on his title shot. All risk hardy any reward (except for us fans). Would be nice for fighters who do this for us to get their flowers & more recognition for just that aspect alone. Meanwhile we have the Belals and Chandlers of the sport who sit on the sidelines whining about what they “deserve”. Hats off to Max & Justin for this EPIC fight! Hopefully UFC gives him the title shot he still deserves, or only makes him win one fight to get one like DP. I wish they would’ve offered Max the fight with Islam, when Arman turned it down, instead of DP. Longest comment ever lol, but yeah lots to say about status at LW at the moment.
Holloway 🙌🙌🙌
Love the videos great work

Why do they always make one judge throw out a random-ass score?
Well done, but its also a sad reality check. Its seems the days of watching some of the most exciting fighters over the past 10 years are coming to an end. Dudes like Olivera, Gaethje, Poirier, Ferguson, Chandler, and Beneil (I guess Conor too but he doesn't fight he just talks about fighting lately) are at the end roads of their fighting careers, especially poor Ferguson. I think the LW division in the UFC will shine less brightly without these guys. We are going to miss them. Of course the LW division will still have Islam, Arman, Gamrot, Fiziev, Benoit etc.. It just won't be the same.
Gaethje never had more than a punchers chance. His numbers are low because max is a much better boxer. Great video and analysis!
6:45 His "dip"in his overall performance was a consequence of Holloway's perfect execution of a well-designed game plan.
It's nice to see the quality of your content get better. Not that your videos were bad or anything like that. But the production, editing, and presentation of the statistics have improved. Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see this channel sky-rocekt!
Chinks in the armor is crazy
This was a great video, much respect!
I was 100% for Max Holloway in this fight. However, any one of those bombs that Justin missed would’ve put Max out. Justin is far from done.
I'm still so interested to see what your analysis of both Sean O'malley fights where O'malley set striking records. 5 rnd masterpiece against Chito & 3 rnd record setting performance against Kris Mutino. Just to assess and break down some high level striking with decent cardio high output as well as good pop on his shots. It's not often we see that combination, as well as his fast twitch feints and jukes that he ties into his offense. It's some high level MMA
lol Justin’s performance was less than you expected because he was fighting max
I really appreciate the work you put into these videos, by far my favorite mma analysis channel because your stats and the way you use them to compliment a fighter’s style make it easier to visualize how they came to be.
However, I think this video would have been better if you walked the viewer through the stats as the fight went on vs displaying the aftermath of key moments. For instance, showing how holloway was able to create such a striking differential with gaethje by using long combinations compared to gaethje’s big punches (of course there’s more to it than just ‘big punches’). I feel like this would give your video more content for the viewer and allow you to employ these statistics into real-ish time as the goes.
Lastly, it would also be interesting if you could try approaching fight analysis from another dimension, like how fighter’s height and arm length can completely change a fighter’s style/stats. For example, when Holloway fought volkanovsk he was at a major disadvantage in the boxing. Consider Pythagorus theorem, Holloway is taller yet has shorter arms (5’11” with 69 inch reach) meanwhile Volk was shorter with longer arms (5’6” with 71.5 inch reach). This would mean that when volk jabbed holloway’s body (71.5 inches away) holloway had to punch at the hypotenuse at 99 inches away (5’11” = 71 in; height^2 + reach^2 ≈ opponents head^2; 71^2 + 69^2 = 5041 + 4761 = sqrt(9802)≈ 99 inches) or 8 feet 3 inches away. Of course this does not take into account foot position or leaning/turning your hips into one’s punches, but this travel distance is incredibly significant and is likely why the boxer (holloway) had such a difficult time trying to punch volk, further evidencing why holloway’s defense was also lacking since volk’s leg kicking and leaning away from counter shots game plan was so effective due to holloway’s insistence on boxing vs mixing it up (which could allow you to bring up more stats on his deficiencies with utilizing effective kicks or checks).
All in all, I always appreciate your videos since they are one of a kind in this MMA space, although I would like it if you made longer content and broaden the type of analysis that you do, this content will always be something to look forward too and maybe one day be brought to the forefront of MMA entertainment where people use it to make gambles or predictions on future fights of the fighters you evaluate.
Side Note: Keep up the great work, it’s nice to see your channel growing from a couple hundred subs on your first video to 10,000’s now! 🎉
He wasn’t swinging like usual…
Broken nose made this fight. Just a second of relaxation made this fight. Dunno why you need stats to understand what happened
Didn’t Nate Diaz come up with the BMF idea?
The benefit to Justin was $2,000,000. I would say he came out pretty well.
Max undoubtedly earned this amazing victory, but Justin will find his way back.
The "BMF" title is so immature- I think it's stupid. That said- I like the BMF fights themselves.
Justin is teetering on the edge go Fergusonosity.
All of the questions will be answered (either way) in the next time Holloway fights. No matter who he fights.
Max should stay 155
Please do ilia topuria vs max holloway
A few whats in the armour of Zhang Weili..? 😳
Thanks for your support of Justin.
Fire the judge that gave round 2 to Justin
If ilia somehow wins the bmf can Dana strip it from him when he immediately starts refusing fights?
Holloway will poke both your eyes then knock you out.
Can we all say that Gaethje got the Tony treatment? He didn’t waited for his title shot, accepted a high risk fight and it didn’t paid off.
But like Justin Timberlake said “what goes around comes around”
0:20 how you gonna use that phrase with 2 Chinese fighters? 😂
It would be great an analysis of the matchup topuria vs holloway
these videos are so good. real analysis. quality from start to finish.
A what in the armor 🤨
Max didn’t get knocked down or “hurt” but okay
Islam hasn't fought 1 person from his division in 18 months.
Edwards doesn't look much better managing a rematch and Colby in a similar time frame😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
Justin is DEF not known for he’s “5 round cardio” bro had out in rd 2 first half of he’s entire career
Insane video man, keep up the good work. We asians will let 0:23 slide
Excellent analytic video, brother. Subscribed, keep it up!
Did you just use the word " chinks" when talking about a fight between two Chinese fighters? 😂😂😂
