Wyndham Clark explains ‘special’ round at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1
golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the Paradigm AI smoke woods and
irons from Callaway and pleased to be
joined now by the man of the moment he
has made the media rounds Windam Clark
Windam how’d you play today made some
putts made some putts you made a few
that was a phenomenal round you’ve had a
chance to digest it uh what’s your sense
of of what you’ve done at Pebble Beach
uh well now it’s just kind of sinking in
that it’s a course record and you know
it’s a place I love love to play here
it’s it’s one of my favorite courses and
obviously the most beautiful place on
Earth in my opinion and to to kind of
have a great round here always is
special and just to even walk on these
grounds is special but then to have one
like I did today even you know it it
definitely is up there in some of my
great accolades that I’ve had thus far
in my career wendham you had 189 ft 9 in
of putts made today that doesn’t include
the 25-footer for bogey on 12 from The
Fringe that is the most feet of putts
hold at AT&T T Pebble Beach proam since
the Advent of shotlink uh rumor has it
you maybe came to this tournament with
more than one putter what’s going on
with that yeah um I think this year I’ve
maybe made 189 ft of putts and I’ve
played two tournaments and that’s eight
rounds and so I have not been putting
very well um I came here uh this last
Sunday early to work with a new putting
coach I think I showed up with eight or
nine Putters and ones with lines one
without lines one’s long one’s short um
and we spent about 4 hours on the
putting green right in front of the
shops here and when I left that putting
session I was like okay I actually feel
pretty good um the next day and Monday I
played out at Cypress with my caddy and
proceeded to make zero putts again and
was kind of frustrated and then Tuesday
Wednesday started trending and Thursday
I made some nice putts at spy glass and
then um you know yesterday I had a great
round going and made some nice putts so
over 90 ft of putts hold that one day
around
soft maybe not the smoothest greens
you’ve ever puted still Pebble Beach and
they’re great but uh that’s pretty
incredible you showed up with eight
Putters to a week they just set all
kinds of Records yeah I’m sure you’ve
been there before when it when you’re
searching you you just say all right you
know what let’s just start over let’s
try something totally new and you know I
switched from being conventional I had a
line on the ball longer Putter and this
week I went same kind of putter but no
line on the um on the putter I went to
left hand low so I made a lot of changes
and I thought that I needed to do that
this week to almost have something
totally different so I didn’t have
anything to fall back on you know
negative and so it’s like okay this is
something totally new and um you know
it’s it’s huge and putting just to see
some go in because then you start
thinking okay I can make the next one
and yesterday that’s kind of how I felt
I started making some putts at the end
of the round and then obviously starting
off today with making some really made
me feel like I can make everything
Windham give us a look into the mind of
Elite Performance very elite performance
you’ve done it in the US Open down the
road in La you’ve done it today around U
this iconic venue give us a little
glimpse into the window of your mind and
your mindset as you’re coming down the
stretch things are going for you you
know this elose of 59 you know talk we
often hear people talk about being in a
present and you know just illustrate
that a little bit more and give us a
little bit of a yeah I was really zoned
in honestly all the way probably till 12
T box um didn’t even think about score I
was just it’s one of those things where
you just see ball hit ball and read the
putt hit the Putt and it goes in very
simple obviously that bogey on 12 kind
of woke me up out of that Trend a little
bit and then then that’s when you kind
of start thinking about score and to
follow that bogey up with a birdie was
probably the biggest turning point in
great third shot there on 14 yeah thank
you big biggest turning point in the
round um for me at least mentally
because I was like you know to bounce
back after kind of making a really bad B
um was huge and and then you just got to
keep the pedal to the medal and focus on
on keep doing what you’ve been doing and
not think about scoring is as cliche as
cliche as that sounds it’s the hardest
thing to do especially in these moments
when you’re coming down to shoot a great
score or to win a tournament to not get
so focused on the score and the outcome
so Simplicity and process those two
things in particular yeah I mean I know
guys get up here and talk about it all
the time but when you do get into the
Heat and the nerves are coming the only
thing you can rely on is is is your is
your mind and and in my mind I was
focused on really being positive on
every shot and anytime I had anything
negative come through try to think more
positive thoughts and then I was trying
to have fun and I was trying to smile I
was talking with cooch a lot talking
with my caddy John and just trying to
stay light and focused out there you
know you did shoot 59 right-handed you
had the one shot left oh yeah there we
go I like the one shot left-handed at
number 12 for an all World bogey uh you
made a 38f footer for Eagle at number
two that jump starts the round and by
the way you started a five under and in
a tie for 23rd six shots off the lead
let’s pick up the highlights here at
number four this is relatively speaking
this is a tap in for you this is it
no yeah it’s an easy putt here this is
at number six yeah I mean this is a you
know an uphill putt across the green and
you’re not really thinking about making
putts like that you’re just more focused
on getting it close and trying to make
birdie and if it goes in great and and
oh by the way that’s two Eagles in the
first six holes a nice little break here
at 7 yeah i i i tugged it obviously you
want to be just left the green slopes
left to right so you want to be left of
the cup to try to have a chance to make
it I pulled it I got a fortunate kick
and then obviously the spin brought it
down to a TA and just like that you’re
at 11 underpart and you’re tied for the
lead so now it’s part 48 this is a 29f
footer yeah this is when this is when I
started feeling hot if uh if you will I
you know making this putt up the hill
it’s about 30 some footer and it’s hard
to get it to the hole and I hit it in
the back of the cup and then to follow
it up with another almost the same exact
putt was pretty pretty remarkable how
many people in the history of playing
Pebble Beach do you think have birdied
eight nine and 10 in a row in the same
round I think this is well Eagles six
birdie 7 no I know but a lot of people
have eagled six and birdie seven but to
birdie eight nine and 10 the same and
throw throw throw in 11 I mean he you
played six through 11 that’s as good a
six-hole stretch as there is in the
world in seven under bar and here we are
at number 11 yeah I mean it’s definitely
one to remember you know make this putt
out here obviously it breaks about 12 13
in it’s super fast you know it’s on PO a
greens and to read that right with the
correct speed is obviously very
challenging so to you know it’s great to
roll that
in now you have to work here at number
12 yeah I’m really shocked that this was
plugged um you know I wet sand I didn’t
think it would plug and then typically
when you play plug shots it shoots out
to the right so I was aim left thinking
it was getting to squirt out to the
right and it just went dead left and so
I was more shocked than anything that
that went there and then then I’m in
even a worse position here um you know I
I went through so many different things
I try to take my time think about it and
I ultimately said I think the best
chance for me to try to get it up and
down but also just hit it on the green
was to go Lefty and you ever practice
left-handed shots like this you need to
if you don’t because that was very good
yeah no I know but hey the lie was bad
okay thank you Johnson uh you ever pull
it out though and and try to you know
yeah I’ve actually done it in my career
as a professional I’ve I’ve done it a
few times I’ve had better lies so this
was uh you know and then obviously to
make the putt that’s when you’re just
like all right I this is a special round
so and I I know how uh much pride you
take in bounce back and yeah last prior
to last year I was um like 160th in
bounce back and then after last year I
was in the top 10 in bounce back and so
that’s another stat that we’re really
focused on this year is to you know stay
in that kind of top 20 in the bounceback
category Brewing animal hole what was
this yeah so it wasn’t for a plug lie um
it was I was right basically on the edge
of a buring animal hole and based on
where I was going to hit at it it was
going to impede my uh through stroke so
getting a break there and being able to
drop was huge my my favorite rule in the
game yeah
when the officials come over I’m like uh
this looks like a burrowing animal hole
right here doesn’t it John yeah you
always feel a little bad doing that but
you know in this case it really was a
burn burning animal all right you you
just roasted the te- ball giving you
what about 230 in with a four iron yeah
um you know to hit that t-ball with the
nerves that I had going I was really
really proud of myself and then
obviously you know I play a cut anyone
would probably try to draw that ball in
there and I said you know what in the
past you try to draw long irons and
doesn’t work out so I said just trust
your cut and obviously it was a tight
cut but um you know to hit the four iron
and have a chance to shoot 59 was pretty
awesome I haven’t had the nerves like
this since the US Open so it was really
you know really fun to have a have a
chance to kind of really break history
and you hit on 16 17 18 three gorgeous
putts and we’re all sitting here
watching it together they all came up
short and we were kind of cussing it for
a second but I’m sure you were to
yourself but you just had so much
command with your putter all day long it
was really beautiful to watch yeah you
know if you could go back I wish I had
about 4 in in the last uh last two putts
really um you know I feel like I would
have made a couple of those but honestly
I can’t complain I had my career round
at one of the most iconic places and I’m
just you know I’m happy to be sitting
here you you’ve mentioned your caddy
John Ellis a few times obviously he’s a
great player himself I believe he’s won
eight times on the Canadian tour uh yall
have a great relationship what what what
is so special about having a guy like
John Ellis on the bag
well first off this place for him is is
uh probably the most special for him and
so he always told me he said wendam if
you could do anything in your career for
me it would be to try to win at Pebble
Beach so you know I don’t know what’s
going to happen with tomorrow and if
we’re going to play and if we do play I
don’t know what the outcome is going to
be but I think at least I gave him
something special that he can hold on to
shooting a great number here um and with
that said he he’s so good for me I don’t
know if he’d be the best for everybody
but for me he really can kind of get
inside my head a little bit when I’m out
there and knows when I’m nervous knows
when to calm me down knows when to get
in my face and say hey stop acting like
a baby and let’s you know let’s focus
and and get the ball in the hole and so
he’s he’s been really instrumental in my
career and you know especially in
moments like this when you you know have
a chance to do something special when at
the start of 2023 you were 163 in the
official world golf rankings you’re now
up to number 10 with the US Open Wells
Fargo in your back pocket now the course
record here at Pebble Beach what
changed um two two main things I took
control of my swing um I I and with that
I changed equipment and I changed
equipment I went to work on um my swing
on my own so John and I he checks my aim
he kind of checks my path but I don’t
have a swing coach and I really kind of
find it in the dirt and so what’s huge
about that is when I’m out on the golf
course and it’s not going well I really
know what to do I go you know what Under
Pressure I always seem to do this and I
think prior to that I was so focused on
golf swing that I didn’t know how to fix
it mid round and I would just go to a
swing coach and say fix it what do I do
and so that I think was the first step I
made that was huge and I started seeing
Great Golf and then the missing
component was the mental game and um
hiring sports psychologist and really
working on the mental game is what I
think put me over the edge from being
you know I think a middle of the road
good PJ Tour player that had a lot of
upside side to then finally kind of
breaking through and getting in the
winter Circle What specifically do you
work on psychologically a lot of lot of
meditation a lot of um a lot of reading
uh a lot of listening to books on tape
um and then just a lot of talking about
my feelings on the golf course either
during the round post round and it’s so
huge because I um it kind of alleviates
a lot of that stress and angst that
maybe I had before um and then the
biggest thing is honestly I would get
dark on the golf course and anyone
that’s been in a rut in golf gets really
dark and really bad thoughts go through
your mind and the stuff that comes out
of your mouth you’re like I would never
say that to anyone else but you say it
to yourself and I fix that part of my
game I still struggle with it um but I
really focus on that so anytime I have
negative talk I try to replace it with
something positive and that’s it’s been
one of the biggest things for me you
deserve a pat on the back today don’t
you that was special and a treat for all
of us to watch congr congratulations
Windham Clark with a Pebble Beach course
record of 12 under 60 well done yeah
thank you thanks guys
thanks
