Michigan basketball and Dusty May who
again it just felt like you know if he
just got that one commitment somewhere
anywhere it was going to be an avalanche
that started as they continued to build
out this roster and lo and behold a
couple days go by and Justin Pippen uh
the son of Scotty Pippen a high school
recruit drops a four star guy top 100
Prospect and five other guys join him on
this roster I’ll list the names here uh
we’ve got Ruben Jones from North Texas
Danny wolf from Yale Trey Donaldson uh
from Auburn the point guard Rody gaale
Jr from Ohio State just did something
with our buddy Andy Backstrom uh which
is on the site now you can check that
out and then Sam Walters from Alabama a
guy who has three years of Eligibility
remaining uh along with the holdovers
that are still on the roster in Jace
Howard namari Bernett we don’t have
official word of what’s up with them yet
so until we do have official word we
assume they’re in mix and then also will
cheddar George Washington the third and
derado Brooks so Clayton I mean it has
been a busy busy few days uh they now
have two scholarship spots left maybe
more depending on some other attrition
but Dusty said he was gonna put together
a competitive roster they felt like
could win in year one and still a few
pieces to go but it feels like they have
that right now yeah I mean I I think
with just this roster um you know based
on what they have and it’s not totally
done yet he did say on John rosin’s
podcast that they’re close to being done
and that the uh the additions will be
more you know maybe just a guy who fits
and I think Vlad golden the big man from
Florida Atlantic probably figures uh
into the mix here I mean I think we’re
just waiting on an announcement on that
one so um but beyond him you know it it’
just be more guys that fit you know
could have be Lorenzo KAS a guard who
was committed to Florida Atlantic and
signed with them before backing out of
his pledge after after Dusty May left
he’s between Michigan and Florida
decision should come you know very very
soon on that one as well so so guys like
that and then you know maybe best
available but I think with the roster
they have right now you know this is an
NCAA tournament team I don’t think
there’s any question about that as long
as they come together uh you have a lot
of new pieces you have to fit together
but it just feels like the right staff
and the right you know players for you
know that to to come together and happen
so uh just incredible I mean Dusty May
is is absolutely everywhere uh you know
from the recruiting Trail to you know
making sure that that his staff is uh is
good to go you know they got five
different assistant coaches now he’s
also visiting fraternity houses may or
may not have been playing beard eyye
that was not on video but I wonder if he
does have a little bit of a shot little
flick of the wrist there with with the
beard Dy dice um he is everywhere you
know and he told uh some of the you know
students on campus when he was going
around he said we’re trying to build a
team so we can end up in San Antonio
next year not just to be you know solid
in year one we want to win big in year
one and he’s not just saying that he’s
going out and doing the things necessary
to make that happen you have a point
guard now in Trey Donaldson you have a
guy who can play point guard you know
probably you come off the bench in Ruben
Jones you have a big guy in Danny wolf
you could add another in Vlad golden you
have a guard Wing type and Rody Gale
from Ohio State and then you also um you
know you add uh you know one of the more
intriguing guys to me is Sam Walters
there’s the video of Dusty if you’re
watching on YouTube uh going to the Frat
houses there but um Sam Walters is
really interesting to me because he’s a
ridiculously good shooter he’s 6 foot 10
uh a lefty out of Alabama that was a top
100 kid a year ago and can just shoot
the lights out he averaged 12.3 minutes
a game last year but made 1.1 threes per
game uh on you know nearly three
attempts like he’s going to get his
three-point shots off need needs to
improve in other areas but he’s somebody
you’re going to work with like you said
for a few years so I mean each and every
piece uh you feel pretty good about that
they’ve added so far Justin Pippen you
have derell Brooks coming in so you do
have a couple freshman maybe some more
um but it’s just pieced together really
well like you said I mean we were
waiting for that first commitment to
come but I think they had a great idea
of where they stood with a lot of these
guys like they told a guy like Conor aan
hey uh you know don’t bother coming on
the visit anymore more because you know
we have some spots that we feel pretty
good about uh you know potentially filed
you like Ruben Jones I think was
committed for a couple weeks before
anybody knew so uh they’ve just done a
really good job so
far yeah and I think the biggest thing
too is we talked about this earlier you
know off platform in that it’s not like
you know you think to some of those
early era like Nebraska roster uh
rosters where um you know a guy like
fred hyberg is Con you know just
rebuilding the entire thing with whoever
will come whoever’s willing to fill a
spot and obviously after a few years you
know it it you know Bears the fruit of
what they’ve been the last few seasons
where you look at this roster now you
know the thing that strikes me about
this group of guys that they’ve brought
in before you add a Vlad golden before
you add anyone else is that Ruben Jones
is the only guy that only has one year
of Eligibility remaining so not only are
you and again some of these other guys
could pop and go to the NBA and
certainly I think that’s probably part
of the pitch too is that that if all
these guys do have good years and they
get to the NCA tournament or or gosh
even make a run through the NCA
tournament which I’m not you know I’m
pretty comfortable saying I think
they’ll be in the mix for one I’m not
ready to say they’re a lock I think
there’s a lot that needs to happen
before on the bub confidence in April
yeah I’m putting them you know Joel
lardy already has them on the bubble I’m
sure first four hours he probably does
have a bracket out which is crazy it’s
funny because he stops caring once the
NCA tournament starts he just stops he’s
like all right well I’ll be back next
year to do this it just sounds like a
miserable life to be honest uh it is it
totally is um but yeah when you look at
you look at what they’ve done here um
it’s not just an entire roster full of
one-year flyers I mean Sam Walters is a
guy three years left wolf Donalds and
Gail they could all be here for two more
years um you know if they add another
High School recruit that guy will be
here for four years along with Pippen so
uh to me I I think it’s he’s done a hell
of a job man right down to the assistant
coaching staff he’s brought in to the
roster he’s brought in to this point and
and you know now the work turns to
getting him signed it looks like they’re
going to get these guys signed pretty
quickly Justin Pippen already officially
signed Ruben Jones of course already
officially signed which I have a feeling
we’re gonna he’s gonna wind up being a
favorite of ours I’m kind of getting
sort of a like a cha D brown type of
vibe with what he could be off the bench
for them so or maybe yeah we’ll see
um I like it a lot so far I mean um A+
if you’re someone who doesn’t believe in
giving out a pluses give it an a I think
that they’ve done a hell of a
job what’s left for you in terms of I
mean let’s assume Vlad golden is in the
mix you have a couple centers I mean you
could play Danny wolf at the four if you
had to you know if a team goes big
against you I don’t necessarily love him
having a guard on the perimeter um
probably missing like that that Wing
type you could slide Rody Gale over to
the two but if you get another guard
like Aiden manany out of St Mary’s who
has the tie with Justin Joiner who’s the
new assistant coach then I think Ry Gall
the three Works um you know yeah because
I do think that it’s going to be a guard
heavy team and by the way I think they
have seven guards on the roster now no
actually eight um like somebody on our
message board the at the wolverine.com
said earlier like I didn’t know you were
allowed to have more than one or two
ball handlers because they’ve been in
that in that cycle the last few years
where just have not had enough I mean
think of the Vanderbilt game in the NIT
last year or two years ago now you know
when they had Terrence Williams
basically playing point guard at the end
they couldn’t get the ball inbounds so
it’s going to be way different than that
I think it’s going to be refreshing from
that standpoint but do you agree it’s
kind of a a wing I mean or another guard
kind of best available between wing and
guard with you know if you get a nelly
Davis in a month after the draft
processes through and you know he
decides to come back to school or not
back to to Michigan but back to college
basketball you know or an Aiden mahaney
type who was just visiting kraton over
the weekend but you know could be a
possibility for Michigan yeah um and it
goes hand in hand too since you brought
up Nelly Davis uh Liam Scott asks Dusty
May’s cooking right now any truth to the
Rumblings about Florida Atlantic
transfer John Al Davis being nicked by
um at missions I haven’t seen anyone I
don’t want to take shots at anyone I’m
not super familiar with where the report
is coming from um we just haven’t really
seen reputable people say that yet
um so I’m not ready to call Davis to
Michigan dead by any means but uh it
does seem like that buzz is cooled off a
little bit um especially now that
Michigan has you know maybe two spots
left and there’s all of a sudden you go
from How Are You Gonna Fill this entire
roster to wow there’s only a couple
spots left like who you know is it GNA
be musical chairs so um I think I’m with
you on I’d probably lean more towards a
wing um I really do think and this might
be
controversial to some I think there’s
room for like a Terrence Williams to
come back if he wanted to I think that’s
the type of guy you know probably more
of a three uh that could play the four
in some lineups the thing is is like
they’re gonna play a lot smaller so
these quote unquote guards you’re GNA
see play the three in some lineups they
might play the four um you know when it
comes to a guy like Rody Gil and just
talking to Andy uh like we did or like I
did a couple hours ago here um you know
there might be some defensive con
concerns with having a guy like him
playing on the wing uh so I I think I
think a wing is probably where I would
put my focus right now um in terms of
point guards it’s really just Donaldson
and and Brooks right now right yeah
Ruben Jones played point guard last year
so he could do it um probably not ideal
you know given uh just his skill set and
I you know I think it’d be much better
suited you know kind of being that sha
de brown I think that’s a good pull by
you earlier with that comparison in
terms of Ro in in personality and
character seems like um a really good
comp um but you know there are guys that
could that could do it and it’s and to
your point too it’s it’s interchangeable
with Dusty may like when you look at you
know the guys like they had last year I
mean all their guards were basically 63
64 could bring the ball up could create
on their own Elijah Martin you know
Nelly Davis um you know Nicholas Boyd
they’re all kind of in that same mold so
you know what’s a three who’s the two
you know come it it doesn’t really uh
matter all that much so I I think that
um you know a wing would be good for
defensive purposes for sure but man I’m
making room for Nelly Davis I’m making
room for Aiden mahaney for sure yeah and
again we talk about those fifth year
guys like Bernett and jaay Howard um
they have to be extended an an invite to
come back and we can’t say with
confidence that’s happened either um so
we’ll see what happens there um a lot of
spots still to fill in U a few spots
left to fill in but got the bones of I
think a pretty good basketball I think I
can safely say not a Wednesday night Big
10 tournament team at this point I mean
I think they’re uh they’ll probably be
in that top half of the conference just
based on the guys they have and based on
the coaching staff they brought in so
any other thoughts I mean who who do we
who are we looking to pop here next I
mean there’s going to be more there’s
there’s at least two more
coming yeah um it’ll be interesting I
mean there’s still some guys on the
board that maybe have haven’t visited
that might be able to come in so I guess
we’ll kind of monitor that um but it
might be guys that you you wait on a
little bit you know like Nelly Davis
going through the draft process I don’t
think he’s any rush at all I don’t think
he’s visited a college yet I know there
was the rumor he was coming to Michigan
that was fake news um you know according
to Jamie Shaw at on three so uh and it
turned out to not happen so Jamie was
all over that thing but um yeah I think
it’s it might just be kind of a process
where you go through it and you see if
there’s some interest out there um and
and you know you kind of just kind of
wait I mean you’re not in a rush now
you’re you don’t have to feel pressured
to go out and get somebody and fill
spots because like you said I mean there
there are a lot of spots that are
full absolutely I’m excited to see it um
you know typically we don’t unless you
he just made a Deep Run in March you
know we haven’t really been super fired
up about Michigan basketball going into
the summer the last few years but uh
that is not the case anymore I really
like what they’ve done here
