Max Homa, Xander Schauffele recall Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines | Golf Today | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1
Damon we’ve got live golf on a Wednesday
heading your way stay with us on golf
today as we lead you into first round
coverage for the Farmers Insurance open
at 300 p.m. Eastern that’s some birdies
on this Wednesday and hard not to think
about Tiger Woods when the tour is at
Tor Rex as you know won this tournament
seven times most recently in 2013 also
won the 2008 US Open at Tory Pine South
it’s eight wins at Tory Pine South are
tied for the most by one player on one
course in PJ tour history with Woods
also winning eight times at Bay Hill and
firestones South course now earlier this
week players were asked about Tiger’s
dominance in their favorite memories of
him at this
venue I remember I think we skipped
school on a Friday once and came down
and uh it was kind of sleepy out here so
we got to watch tiger play the back nine
on South which is cool when people think
about Tiger Woods being here you
mentioned coming out and seeing him play
what shots do you remember you know from
him specifically being here whether it
be at the farmers or the open is there
any any of that that stand out uh one
hole 15 another bear of a hole I
remember he hit a massive drive and it
looked like he hit a nine and and spun
it back to like two feet and kicked it
in that was the hole that I just
remember it sticks out so much to me uh
just you know it’s graceful and it’s
powerful it was it’s just something you
have to almost see up close I was um on
this putting green out here and I was
still in awe of everything you know my
rookie everything was just I couldn’t
believe it you know living out at my
dream and was putting and there was so
many people around the putting green and
I I heard this like buzz or this this
commotion and I I didn’t know what was
going on and I looked around and tiger
had walked down into the putting green
and it was like a holy cow moment for me
like I’m I’m trying to putt but I’m
still like I’m peeking over to see like
I’ve never really seen him before so I
was it just was it just struck me you
know and there’s there’s holes out here
mostly because of tiger that you
remember you know you remember shots
that he hit hit and US opens and um it’s
just a special place I was on the tree
on 18 that fell uh I was hiked up pretty
far on that tree I remember I was going
up the the trunk of it as high as
possible I got pretty pretty far above
uh just short short left on of the
hazard on 18 and I had pretty much a
straight on sideline of him making his p
and the the whole sort of colum feel
that 18 was during that US Open so many
great moments Tiger Woods at Tory Pines
but it goes back even before his
professional days used to go to the
junior worlds down there his parents
would take him there I believe he met
notto beay III for the first time at the
junior worlds and then of course when he
was a professional there was always
little undercurrent does Tori belong to
Phil or does it belong to tiger and of
course all roads lead to 2008 in that US
Open we were we were asked we were
tasked last night to come up with our
best tiger moments and it was a little
embarrassing as I kind of started
clicking them off like at least three of
my top five came from’ 08 and I’m
thinking he’s had a lot of really good
moments on this golf course but I think
it’s a test to what he did in ‘ 08 I
think when I started thinking about it a
17th hole on Saturday when s and look he
was making his run and I I’ve compared
this many many times to the idea that
there are roic cup clar crowds there are
Master’s crowds and then there’s this
Tory prim’s crowd like I don’t know that
I’d ever been in the middle of something
that exciting that sort of chaotic with
Tiger Woods doing his maximum Tiger
Woods thing and that moment the second
on that list has to be the putt on
Sunday this is just to get into the
playoff the emotion the best is when you
look at that Putt in slow motion sort of
close it’s bouncing around there’s no
way that putt should have gone in no
doubt of course the great duel with Roco
mediate and to think that he was told by
doctors do not play and he said I’m
playing in the US Open I believe he
added a few other words in that uh
statement as well I think when you look
back at that Monday and we talked about
it this morning the golf itself wasn’t
overly compelling I mean I think they
were really grinding it out I think they
both knew what was at stake it was
afterwards that stuck with me because at
this point in Tiger’s career even now
he’s not one to sort of look back he
doesn’t spend a lot of time looking into
the rearview mirror that’s probably why
he has done what he’s done in his career
I think in that moment given what you
just said the fact he should not have
probably been playing that the doctors
told him not to that his body was very
much broken I think he understood it in
that moment what he had accomplished and
I think that’s why we saw some of the
reactions that we saw after he HED out
on 17 the smile on his face the giggle
he even but this is ridiculous how is
this happening and then of course you
know the putts that he made on on greens
that were like you know putting over
sandpaper I mean the guy just you want
talk about the power of the mind and the
ability to will shots and that’s why you
had Rocko mediate standing watching on
the TV shaking his head on that 72 hole
I knew he’d make it of course he’s going
to make it that was almost like it was
written in the stars well and I don’t
want to gloss over everything else he’s
had if you took that US Open out of the
equation he has still had a Hall of Fame
career at Toy Pine and I immediately as
I kind of looked you go back to 2003
when he won the Farmers Insurance open
now it was a commanding Victory he won
by four shots that’s not the part that
stands out to me he’s done that a lot in
his career he shot a 68 that day the
scoring average was 73 he was five shots
better than the rest of the field it was
an amazing performance one of the first
times they paired the the super groups
of of tiger and Adam Scott and Phil
together and tiger just ran away from
him all at the end of the day as he so
often did and he was so comfortable he
is so comfortable on that golf course
and it goes back to his Junior days it
goes back to him talking about his dad
taking him down to see the PGA Tour
event at the time it’s a very special
place for him in golf hard of the course
the better he played it’s amazing when
you look at what he accomplished in his
career it was always against the
toughest fields and it was always on the
hardest golf courses yeah maybe he has
one more run one more chapter perhaps in
his late 40s never counting him out I
got out of that business a long time ago
no doubt about
it
