welcome to jwl sports where we review
all the best sports from around the
world now you’re probably wondering why
should I watch over here instead of
anywhere else and that’s because over
there they don’t care about what you
have to say they say this all the time
they talk down to us they think we’re
just a bunch of clowns on youtube
Twitter but I think it’s the opposite I
think we know exactly what we’re talking
about so I read every single comment so
whether you agree with me or disagree
with me either way let’s get in some
discussions let’s get in some fights but
ultimately let’s just have some fun and
please do consider subscribing we are
building an amazing Community here and I
would absolutely love to see you part of
it I want to build something that we all
genuinely feel connected to something
that we’re really excited to be part of
and I think we’re well on our way to
doing it without further Ado let’s get
to it we’re watching a clip of first
things first talking about the most
insane story I think I’ve heard in a
really long time now I’m recording this
before the draft this is going to post
right before the draft and maybe I am
going to be a clown and I’m going to
have to eat crow I will literally get a
crow out of the sky and eat it right
here but this whole story that um the
Chargers are going to potentially
draft Herbert’s replacement is one of
the most insane things I’ve ever heard
in a really long time because Justin
Herbert is not only an unbelievable
quarterback but to think that these
other quarterbacks are better than him
is just insane I can see the the Caleb
you know argument right and especially
the Caleb potential but anyone else
better than Justin Herbert is comically
hilariously absurd I feel like Nick may
add some um Credence to this but I know
manini is going to be like that’s absurd
and same thing with brusso let’s see
what they have to say maybe they’ll
surprises but I just I really can’t get
over this show some odd movement out of
Vegas and La that saw the Chargers
chances of drafting a quarterback go
from 100 to1 to 6
to1 Nick what do you make of this shift
and do we really think the charges are
drafting Herbert’s replacement here by
the way hi coach uh all right so let me
kind of be the you know onsite gambling
expert SL degenerate and explain what’s
going on here so a couple things one is
clearly there was some real money placed
at 100 to one and so they wanted to
lower the odds lower your exposure but
then the money kept coming in so why
would the money come in there is a
scenario that exists where the Chargers
are sitting at 5 and for instance the
Broncos want to trade up from 12 and the
Vikings want to trade up for 11 they’re
going back and forth getting the best
bids and the clock is ticking they’re
like you know what we this is going to
keep going up and they draft him only to
then trade him a half hour later like
that so that’s why I think the the odds
Dro from 100 to one down to where they
are now to protect themselves from it do
I think there is a real scenario that
Justin Herbert’s not the quarterback
there next year I do not what I want to
ask you is this though coach even though
the dead money hit would be Russell
Wilson ask if John if Jim Harbaugh
believes what he said that JJ McCarthy’s
the best quarterback in the
draft and you have the opportunity to
draft him and then trade Justin Herbert
for four first round picks from
Minnesota the 11 to 23 and their next
two firsts which is what you would get
if you if Jim Harbaugh really believes
that JJ McCarthy is the best quarterback
in this draft and you get for nothing
for 5 years and you get four first round
picks for this guy then that’s a move
you would make I don’t think he actually
believes JJ’s the best quarterback in
the draft and this is all smoked to help
his guy but if you believed that then
you would do then you would do that
because you would get such a return and
reset the fin yeah look I absolutely
believe from from just a drafting a
quarterback perspective if it’s any
quarterback yeah that the E stick is the
backup so you could go get a quarterback
but if we’re talking about JJ McCarthy I
I’m with you if he really believes that
JJ McCarthy is a franchise quarterback
and you could move on and deal with the
cap hit on Justin Herbert and get a a
load of picks to set up your future I I
could definitely see Jim doing that and
Jim used to say when we were at San
Francisco I’m sure he said it at
Michigan we’re the San Francisco 49ers
we can do whatever we want and what he
meant by that is we’re not bound by
conventional wisdom by what everybody
else in the league thinks we’re going to
do what we think is right and we’re
going to take chances that other people
wouldn’t so for him to do something that
the wrest of league would look at and
say that how could you do it that
doesn’t bother Jim at all and to me
that’s what makes Jim different than a
lot of other guys is because he’s
willing to take chances that other
people will not take wow well saying
we’re the ners is I assume that was
based on their past history when they
were winning a lot of Championship even
though he no it was one of the first
meetings I was in we were we were it was
an offensive meeting we were talking
about a scheme that was little bit
different and it kind of came up and
Jim’s like Hey we’re the San Francisco
49ers we can do whatever we want but the
thought that the the but his mentality
is we it doesn’t matter what the Cowboys
are doing does okay so all right I want
to see where I want to take this because
I get Nick’s point in terms of drafting
a quarterback and then you’re going to
end up treating him so I get that that’s
like one of those cop out that’s like
technically true but it’s not obviously
Herbert’s replacement right that’s like
kind of a different separate thing um
I’m not going to pretend that I
understand all the ins and outs of how
to successfully navigate um the NFL
draft it’s just I that’s that’s a Fool’s
errand from my viewpoint um but in terms
of the whole JJ
McCarthy now as we’ve talked about a lot
on this channel and you guys know that I
talk about this is that right you can
have a pretty good quarterback and
getting him on the cheap you know rookie
deals great and you build a team and
that is absolutely a recipe for success
but that you need to have a great
quarterback a great head coach to be
able to do that obviously Harbaugh is a
great
coach but the
idea that JJ McCarthy will be better
than Justin
Herbert I
wholeheartedly
reject and when you have such an
unbelievable Talent
like a Josh Allen Patrick Mahomes Justin
Herbert Joe burrow that is the exception
to the rule of well hey you know what
maybe it’s better to get a pretty you
know a pretty good quarterback not pay
him a lot of money and stack the roster
because at the end of the day who would
you rather be the Kansas City Chiefs
with Patrick
Mahomes or the 49ers with Brock pury or
Jimmy Garoppolo the Stacked roster with
a great head coach the answer is obvious
it’s the one with Patrick moms because
when you have a great coach and an elite
great
quarterback then you can overcome
virtually anything you still need to
build the roster don’t get me wrong but
the Difference Maker is going to be the
coach and the quarterback that is why
Patrick Mahomes doesn’t need to have the
world’s greatest roster and you can have
an unbelievable stacked roster and still
not win a Super Bowl you can be
highly competitive and the 49ers
probably would have beat a lot of other
teams that were not that did not have
Patrick
Mahomes but and again if Brock pie was
just 10% better and I’m not saying that
Brock py was the reason why they didn’t
win the Super Bowl he played fine he
played good he played a very solid game
I I already laid out all the reasons why
the 49ers didn’t win and Brock pry was
not one of them but it doesn’t matter
because if Brock pry just played 5%
better 10%
better than they would have won and
that’s what someone like a Patrick
Mahomes can do he can play that 5% 10%
better he can be the true differen maker
that overcomes whether it be the
mistakes of the defense or another
offensive player or his own mistakes
right he could overcome his own
interception or fumble that’s what makes
Patrick Mahomes such a Difference Maker
in that regard so Justin Herbert is that
quarterback I know a lot of people are
doubting out on Justin Herbert and I get
it because we are such like in this
world where like you need to win Super
Bowls and MVPs you need to have this
success right now and if not no you’re a
hack you know you’re you’re a bust
you’re you
choke he is was with a bad team with a
bad coach a poorly run organization what
have the Chargers done nothing it’s not
Justin Herbert’s fault so this idea that
you would move on from a Justin Herbert
a Josh Allen um a Patrick Mahomes
because that’s where I put them I put
them in the same category to be able to
get another
quarterback who you’re now going to be
on the rookie
deal so you’re going to be able to stack
the roster
up I reject that because those
quarterbacks are too good if you had a
Dak Prescott that makes sense if you had
maybe like an in between quarterback who
you’re like I don’t know where is he
going to go Trevor Lawrence or I’ll even
throw Jaylen Herz and you guys know I’m
an equals fan I’ll even throw Jaylen
herz’s name in the middle you know in
that in that hat you could be like like
uh maybe actually cuz if he’s just kind
of around you know dak’s level or
jaylen’s level maybe slightly better
slightly worse you can make an argument
that maybe that’s the way to go but not
when you’re talking about people who are
who have just pure Bonafide Talent
that’s
unquestionable and that is what Justin
Herbert is he’s never really been in a
position to truly shine just yet and I
just can’t believe that Harbaugh would
do that and JJ McCarthy has shown me
nothing to make me believe that he is a
better quarterback than Justus Herbert
now if he truly believed in his heart
and you know he’s the football expert
right he’s he knows more than me and you
if he truly believed I know the NFL I
know college I know JJ McCarthy is going
to be a stud in the NFL I know it I know
it I know it without a doubt well then
yeah then I guess you do make that move
cuz now you to essentially get someone
who’s like either as good as Justin
Herbert or potentially better than
Justin Herbert you get him on the rookie
deal you’re going to get all these picks
and then that’s like a grand slam home I
mean like that’s as good as it gets
really right it’s like getting Patrick
mahom being able to draft your Patrick
Mahomes but now also have what did they
say like four first round picks or
something and not pay him any money I
mean you should be able to get yourself
to the Super Bowl within minute
seemingly so I I do see that argument
but I don’t know man that that’s on one
side I want to see this happen because
it’s just entertainment and it’s like
mind-blowing on the other side I’m like
how could they do that that’s insane so
I don’t know but those are just my
thoughts I would absolutely love to hear
yours what do you think the chances are
that La drafts her bir’s replacement let
me know in the comments below whether
you agree with me or disagree with me as
I said I read every single comment so
let’s get in some discussions let’s get
in some fights but ultimately let’s just
have some fun and please do not not

Seems like Harbaugh never really entertained the idea. I agree Herbert is worth holding onto. He’s a potential elite QB and hasn’t had much help yet
I don't think Nick was saying McCarthy is better than Herbert, I think he's saying that if you can get the best QB in this draft (with the context being that consensus is that Caleb Williams is a "generational talent" so if McCarthy is better than that, it speaks for itself) and also get 4 first round picks to load up the offense with top skill players for example, then you would take the deal. Given that Herbert hasn't won a playoff game after 4 years, even if he is a top talent, you could see them making that move. I think what they said makes sense only in the context that they made the argument, but obviously it wasn't real in hindsight.
I do think Herbert is going to have some pressure next year though if the Chargers have another failed season. They'll either draft a QB in 2025 or start trying to line things up to get Archie Manning.
