necessary absolutely not even guys that
go to the portal come back out of the
portal a changed man so it’s the
uniforms Joe it has to be the Jordans Jo
as LeBron James said the other day uh on
his podcast with JJ reic so two bits of
news for the tar Hills we found out
yesterday afternoon when we got done
with the podcast that Seth TR is taking
his name out of the portal he’s coming
back to North Carolina that’s I think
good for everybody involved but then
Matt norlander our friend over at CBS
kind of buried the lead a little bit
with the hey you know great news about
Seth Seth Trimble but he’s not the only
one who’s decided to come back and he
drops the news that RJ Davis should be
making an announcement here relatively
soon that he’ll be coming back to North
Carolina this goes against something
that Brendan marks of the athletic and I
agreed on when it came to RJ Davis and
whether or not he was going to come back
at UNCC what more do you have to play
for um you can use your extra year of
Eligibility totally get it yeah there’s
nil but again what are you coming back
for exactly you Joe were like yeah you
know a million
dollars I mean it’s not just that I’m
not trying to be dismissive I know it’s
not just that but I think if you have
options right like I can make a bunch of
money do something I’m comfortable doing
even though to your point it might be a
different group who you’re playing with
you’re still comfortable in that setting
you can still be dominant you can still
have success and you can still have more
success right while I thought North
Carolina did a tremendous job this
season bouncing back from the historic
collapse from being the preseason number
one and not making the tournament at all
in 2023 MH they still left some meat on
the bone the final four to be specific
yeah and you know if you’re Carolina and
you’re sitting here going what what can
we do to differentiate what can we do to
kind of continue the standard that we’ve
had here and I I I think that’s the
challenge in front of RJ Davis um not so
much the financial part of it but I
think it would be erroneous to sit here
and say to someone who’s 23 years old I
guess at this point hey you know you you
you should go make your living and then
be like well you could make you know
200,000 in Turkey 300,000 you know and
he probably play in Spain too sure I
mean he’s good enough to do all those
things he just his his his problem is
his size quite frankly right mhm plenty
of there are plenty of places for him to
go play and make money playing
basketball there’s not the same
situation though for him that where he
can make as much money as he can in
Chapel Hill and be in a situation where
quite frankly if you’ve asked anyone I
remember talking to Trevor Lacy who
ended up playing a year in Russia and
it’s like okay this is before all of the
great Putin stuff you know but you’re
just
like what what have I gotten myself into
I remember you know you have those
moments and then you sit there and you
worry am I going to get paid am I here
for no reason I really just want to eat
something that’s familiar to me I really
just want to go have a conversation with
someone other than you know my loved one
on the phone or or on Google uh mail or
whatever it was you know at the time aim
or I always I always think back to two
conversations with a Carolina guy and a
state guy who played overseas for a good
chunk of their post college career one
of them was Bobby Frasier the Razer and
I forgot what country he was in he was
in England he was in England but he also
played somewhere else too where I
believe I I of this this conversation is
so old that I can’t remember the
particulars of it but all I remember is
that at some point somebody didn’t get
paid it was either him or another player
on the team did not get paid so this was
at the height of Angry Birds they played
Angry Birds on the
bench while the game was taking but I’m
not playing like you’re not gonna pay me
then I’m not gonna play so I’m just
gonna sit here and play Angry Birds and
that just that just cracked me up and
then I think about Julius hch who spent
a good chunk of time in China and I
remember him always talking about you
mentioned the meals right he’s like he
like hey man I just want like I just
want mcdonal you know I just want like a
burger or something like that you know
and and all that kind of stuff comes
back to you didn’t have that choice back
then yeah um you know um now in the case
of Julius hodj and Poppy Fraser they
played their entire careers their their
entirety of their college careers that
they could but now if you can do it and
make money everybody wins and that’s
what it gets back to with North Carolina
you’re going to have a back court now
that has RJ Davis you know a returning
ACC player of the year you’re going to
have a very key role guy that doesn’t
need to learn anything new in Seth
tremble I mean I know Charelle McMillan
our guy over at inside Carolina put it
in the best terms possible Seth tremble
coming back would be viewed differently
if he was coming in as a transfer Portal
from another program like you look at
Seth trumble’s stats you look at what he
does you look at you know he’s a veteran
right people would be going oh man we
got a good guy on the portal this is
going to be great but now with Seth
you he knows what he’s supposed to do he
knows what his role is he’s more of a
glue guy at this point that veteran uh
room would help with the new guys that
are coming in of course you have Elliot
kdo year two and his development so
North Carolina’s gonna have a very good
back cour very very good back cour um
and to just kind of illustrate how weird
all this kind of stuff is Matt norlander
added this on social media this is a wow
but follow me here RJ Davis returning
means that North Carolina will have two
different all-americans return to school
in back to back years the season after
earning allamerican honors Bott 1D team
and 23 came back for 24 for the first
time since worthy Jordan Perkins in the
early 80s this gets back to what you
always like to talk about when it comes
to Carolina what they had guys come back
a year more than anyone else at any
other program ever must be nice because
of the Jordans must be nice the uniform
it has has everything to do with that
everything to do with that all right so
North Carolina’s back court seems to be
pretty much set at this point still need
a big they still do need a big yes and
the other news that came out this week
Harrison Ingram is going pro which we
talked about earlier I think he left the
door open though a
jar if I read that correctly perhaps if
I read it correctly he was going through
the process the door was slightly a jar
there I I don’t know what’s going to
happen I know based on based on the
atario for Life comment I’m GNA assume
he’s done like he’s talking about in the
past well you can’t go into the draft
process and think oh I’m going to half
ass this thing and I’ll be back I think
he’s going in thinking I’m going I’m
going he is obviously uh the kind of
player who can impress you in a workout
I think he will um but you know I think
his healing is probably the second round
meanwhile over deny State uh Kevin Keats
is going distressed assets route not one
he’s talking to he’s talking to David
terer yeah not one but two Louisville
players have now come over to NC State
through the portal uh Brandon Huntley
Hatfield came over earlier he’s what
he’s a forward right he’s a big and then
we’ve got uh 13 and eight I mean that’s
pretty good and and then in the last 24
hours we found out Mike James will be
part of a backourt that features dant
Styles but they still need a guy yeah I
think Mike James is your ancillary
scorer yeah I mean he averaged 12 and a
half points five rebounds last year at
Louisville rebounds might be a little
bit lower this year uh on this
particular State team but you know I
would think the Styles as the cascy
morel role uh and now I think James is
your bigger guard type role now you need
that lead guard and that’s will that
will be the Kevin Keats Levi Watkins
special this will be the DJ horn the
darkel Joiner you know this is where you
go and I think maybe you apply some of
the lessons from last year you know yes
you had to pay for these two players
from Louisville uh but you probably paid
the same rate that you that you were
comfortable last year I think one thing
they figured out last year was you know
it might be worth it going now but James
averaged 12 points a game last year okay
that’s in line with the Jaden Taylor
that’s actually in line with What DJ
horn did at Arizona State sure they want
a guy who average 15 16 17 that’s where
you’re spending a little bit more
there’s your Hunter Salis that we had
talked about from last year I could see
them overspending or prioritizing that
lead guard position and and using the
bigger chunk of their nil investment in
that we’re gonna talk to BJ Barham
American Aquarium who’s going to be part
of an NC State and I event as of this
recording is taking place tonight okay
but it’s a larger conversation that we
can tie in we can talk to BJ about you
know final four and all the run and
because we talked to him after the uh
the ACC tournament run curious get his
his thoughts his experience on the final
four and you know being part of of what
n State’s trying to build to your point
about the
budget I am curious if this is the this
is the proof is in the pudding with what
the final four means for ncy State sure
if you’re if you’ve if you’ve
reinvigorated the base like getting the
final four you’ve stuffed the stuff you
then say let’s keep this momentum going
it’s not like Kevin ke is going anywhere
with the contract you know he he will go
if he wants to go but ultimately that
contract’s locking him in all right now
it’s time to truly make this
work that’s where the money that’s to go
full Don Draper that’s what the money is
for here’s one so how much how much do
you think they got a bump sure from the
final for we always talk about the
enrollment bump from teams going deep in
the NCAA tournament but with nil now
it’s a hey guys if you want to keep this

1.1 Million last year so I would expect
that to at least be two this year now

diploma was my motto senior year the
problem is yeah there are some he’s an
international player so there are some
nil restrictions there you could still
get them money there’s ways around it of
course right the problem is as the old
got man loveed to say oh jeez when
they’re on
campus they’ll listen to you the second
they get off campus
they got a cousin they got cousin Yuri
they got an uncle they got a Handler
they got a girlfriend they got a baby
mama they got something who’s gonna tell
them are you sure are you sure you want
to go back to Raleigh man you sure we
could go do this we can go do that their
concern is Mo goes home and doesn’t come
back interesting that that’s even though
he would be the centerpiece of that team
in a way that DJ Burns was was in the
postseason but wasn’t physically capable
of during the regular season you would
see them feature Mo in a way that he
would truly be the centerpiece of that
team look the the Turn Around from
question is can they get him to come
back that’s a key component because and
that would be a huge I remember you and
I you and I talking about this because
you had highlighted modar at the
beginning of the season and the early
Returns on modar was raw man raw but as
the season you need but as you Pro as
the season progressed you saw how he
came along he started getting more
comfortable he started becoming a key
component we you know this run does not
happen with how they handled Ramadan and
his availability and everything else so
yeah you’re looking for the growth I
mean that’s that’s the thing about
college basketball we can go portal all
day but sometimes continuity matters and
diar’s development would be key to this
that if this happens I don’t want to
hear about n State [ __ ] no no no I hear
about it there’s a reality to it exactly
right exactly this guy has a family
wants to live somewhere else wants to
move on with his life doesn’t love
school yeah that’s not [ __ ] that’s a
reality but I’m say thank you you can
just suppose that with Carolina like oh
yeah B is going back for his 20th year
we’re gonna find a way find a
loophole I mean well you know he’s got a
girlfriend MC state had it locked down
on the none and duns so they gotta find
something they did find something to do
you’re thinking about State you’re
thinking about diara middle Brooks and
Michael oconnell those are your three um
Paul mcneel can really really really
shoot but he’s a freshman they have him
coming in you know MJ rice is still kind
of out there too what what’s he going to
do with the rest what what decision does
he kind of face but I do think you’ll
see Kevin add some more players as
someone who had sent sent me a message
about Kevin adding these Louisville
players I said sir if you think Kevin
was stubborn before and Kevin Kevin
enjoyed doing things his way before now
that he had has this scalp under his
particular belt you you you ain’t
telling Kevin what to do now sir he

jealous of what he’s doing yeah we had a
conversation earlier today about what
we’re doing and he’s like oer you’re
telling me I can’t get on the golf
course today you just want to live the

when you want who
wouldn’t not not the worst way to go
about your day I didn’t think so I
didn’t think so all right man let’s get
back to Monday night PNC Arena and they
have this this comeback and we’re also
we’re all kind of processing it it
actually happens uh in front of fans at
home typically when the canes have done
this they’ve done it on the road so it
was pretty wild to see it in person what
are you thinking watching this I mean
are you having flashbacks to 02 I mean
what’s going through your mind I
honestly yeah it the the way that that
all went down it it reminded me of when
staly tied it in game two against New
Jersey where we had uh given up a goal
with like 30 seconds left and had
controlled the majority of the game and
and it was just like well how do we get
here all of a sudden you know and uh and
he he he scores to tie it with what
2.4 seconds or 9 seconds something like
that and you know the building just
erupts um but I think you could like you
could feel that like the canes were
pushing um you know once they got that
first one um you know later in the
second period and then you know Jarvis
hits the crossbar and then he’s got a
wide open net and the shot gets blocked
um I mean they were coming so you know
it was it was almost like after that
goal and and you know the few shifts
that they strung together at the end of
the second period it was like man you
you just hope that they can carry that
momentum and that you know the
intermission doesn’t kill it and so I I
thought they did a good job of you know
sticking to it like you just you have to
just keep going at the team the you know
the same way shift after shift and
that’s how you you you break them down
just I mean it’s a war of attrition out
there when it comes to playoff hockey
he’s two digits off a little bit smaller
not quite as Reckless as you are but
does Seth Jarvis remind you of
anyone he yeah he is um he he kind of
like at times reminds me of more like
like a Chad the Rose where he’s just CU
he’s a smaller guy and he just he gets
into guy’s hands and you know he’s
feisty um he’s he’s kind of he’s
referred to uh as one of my Bulldogs
here at my house my my scrappiest uh and
my youngest Bulldog uh Dallas so um yeah
it’s kind of funny but he um yeah he he
just he plays the game the right way he
plays hard skates hard and you know for
a you know an
undersized uh you know guy in terms of
his stature he he plays a lot bigger
than than he is I have a playing with
other people question for you this is
not a rod criticism question for you
okay um I didn’t I did not love that he
took Jarvis away from AO uh before this
game as a guy who who had a great
rapport with Rod bremore and amongst
others what does that do as a player
does it does it matter or is it
something more of like that we can talk
about line changes and and playing with
different guys or do you see it kind of
the way that I did I mean jarvey was was
really rolling there with AO and gensel
towards the at the end of the regular
season so I I didn’t love breaking them
up I’ll just I’ll put it that way but as
a player how did you kind of see it well
I think lots of times you know when
decisions like that are made it’s it’s
not
necessarily um
like a oh you know we gota we got to
switch it up because this isn’t working
it’s you know we maybe we need to get
somebody else going maybe it’s the
matchup and we like you know how this
looks better with with Jarvis on the
stall line um because they can you know
play that checking line role and shut
down the teams the other team’s top but
at the same time they’re a threat to to
score goals and you know I I think that
like lots of times decisions like this
it’s more about the rest of the lineup
and what the the other matchups guys get
and you know getting or you know say
getting terrain you know going and
getting him a good feeling and things
like that so I think there’s you know
there’s a lot of different reasons why
uh coaches will make little moves uh
like that but I would say you know nine
times out of 10 it’s it’s for the
matchup yeah it’s interesting that you
bring up the matchup aspect of it
because jilo and I talked to Brena Moore
at the end of the season and I had asked
him bringing gensel on allows the canes
to have something they haven’t had since
Rod’s been the head coach and that’s
kind of have a line that’s a bit of a
hammer and when you’re in the playoffs
sometimes you need that and then he you
know he kind of he’s like yeah I could
see that but let me push back on that
and he brought up the matchups like I
don’t know how these lines are going to
roll out I don’t know who’s going to
match up with who so you can see that
you can see that that change in the
first game and and them sticking with it
and I guess to Joe’s point I mean at
this point in the
season I guess you’re used to playing
with people or with Rod and what he’s
been able to do it doesn’t really matter
there’s depth and you know what your
role is going to be and just go out
there and do it yeah well I mean the
system is the system and okay like you
know Rody’s got these guys all playing
the game the same way which is the right
way then if you don’t play the game the
right way you kind of stick out like a
sore thumb out there right like so from
the the most part you know everybody’s
bought in and you you see it right
there’s going to be times here or there
where you know somebody’s you know needs
a kick in the pants or whatever it might
be but as far as you know when you when
you get shuffling you know around with
the lineup all that is is just it’s the
little little nuances of chemistry with
certain guys and knowing their
Tendencies and and things like that you
know like with that line in particular
you know Martin knook and Jordan both
big bodies they’re going to you know
take up a lot of space create space
they’re going to hang on to the puck
down low you know what I mean so you can
kind of anticipate okay like if I’m
putting the puck you know back down
below the goal line I’m gonna go look
for some space like you know some soft
ice somewhere in the slot or whatever
you know like you just you know what
their game and so you just you know you
might have to adjust your game a little
bit to it
but it’s I mean at the end of the day
you’re playing hockey Eric Cole part of

it has to be has to be against them well
I I mean it’s been a couple years now
right like and they’ve been they’ve had
a a good Hockey Club we’ve had a good
Hockey Club yeah um you know I think
that you know Chris bringing in lobby to
to that organization was a was a really
good move um and yeah I mean lavy’s got
a knack for in that first season where
you know he he gets teams you know over
the hump um you know whether it’ll be
the case this year I I mean remains to
be seen I hope certainly hope not but um
you know they you know they got away
with uh you not getting very good goal
tending from shesterkin and actually you
know a former K Smite winner yeah as
their backup was uh was really carrying
the mail for them um but they’re just
yeah they’re a solid all-around team and
they got a really like strong power play
so I mean they’re they’re going to be a
tough matchup but I mean we can’t be
looking past anybody just yet you’re not
playing any you’re not play you can do
that now was curious I see it setting up
I see that Lobby Alou out there waiting
for you and I I did want to ask this we
we’ll let you go to your tea time after
this because I was curious It’s almost a
two-parter in the the psychology within
the game and then once the game is over
and you process and and where you go
from there so let’s go back to O2
Montreal right um You you’re part of
that that molsen maral you pop out you
score the goal things get tied up they
win it in overtime there’s the sense in
the game oh we’re gonna make this
happened which I’m guessing you felt
that within the game oh yeah you you can
tell right my curiosity my curiosity is
after the game could you also tell
they’re shook we’re good this series is
going to be ours because I kind of got
that sense at the end of this game on
Monday where you could tell the
Islanders were shook by the way they
reacted at the end of the game and I
feel like the series is over yeah it I
mean it’s a shame that we have the extra
day in between two and three um like for
me I mean people don’t really probably
realize this but like I mean we used to
play even backtack nights with travel in
the playoffs like it was never just
really like strung out like this um I
mean you look at what happened you know
that night in Montreal when we come back
we beat them 4-3 in overtime I mean they
were yeah they didn’t know what to do we
go to Raleigh we play them on Sunday on
Mother’s Day and we scored early and
we’d end up stomping them like 51 it
like there wasn’t even very much push
back but the beauty was we went right to
Montreal we played like an afternoon
game on Mother’s Day and then we went
right to Montreal and played that night
in game six to close them out and just
buried them I mean it was like you could
tell like it was just like their their
Spirit had been broken and we we rolled
them from there on from that from game
three performance and unfortunately it
didn’t do us any favors leading into
that Toronto series
because I mean that was just an absolute
you know prison rules War so it was uh
yeah it was a significant difference
between the two series speaking of
facing your Padawan learner facing the
master that was you and Gary Roberts
yeah I yeah I yeah Rob’s got me pretty
good that’s couple different look at
your Roy Williams like memory though 5-1
yep on the 12th very next day you you
beat him 82 at the molon center you all
never forget this stuff that’s the thing
it’s wild you never forget this stuff I
got a I got a really I got a really good
memory so yeah I mean I remember stuff
from my childhood that my brother and
sister are like how like how how do you
how do you come up with this stuff Eric

four love Kevin Durant man but no turn
out the lights man no it’s it’s actually
Tim and Joel embiid for different
reasons right Kevin Durant’s just at the
point where Kevin Durant’s 35 and we
it’s something that I will pound the
table on not every not everybody’s
LeBron James not everybody’s Tom Brady
we just act like all these guys just
play into their mid to late 30s Kevin
Durant has had a series of injuries and
the fact that he was able to come back
from what the blown Achilles the
Achilles uh in the first place was
incredible enough but at that point he’s
kind of fragile is the wrong word to use
but you’re just waiting for him to break
down again yeah well I mean Kevin Durant
this is the guy who couldn’t do the
bench press at the combine like this is
not a guy who like LeBron James takes
care of his body physically in a way
this is a guy who could really shoot the
basketball yeah is one of the best
one-on-one scorers in the history of the
NBA but he’s also 35 now and is not
capable of taking over games the way
that he used to be and I will say
forever that the Celtics were the
smartest franchise ever for being like

right for a guy that we already have two

embiid as the Sixers find themselves
