Can average golfers break TPC Sawgrass? | Episode 1

Takomo’s Tim Urban is on a quest to break 80 at TPC Sawgrass. The problem? He’s a five handicapper prone to a slice and the occasional snowman. Tim is joined by Joonas, another member of Team Takomo. Joonas is a 16 handicapper attempting to break 90 at Sawgrass.
In this new video series, we hook Tim and Joonas up with some of the worlds best golf coaches and YouTube golf legends as the prepare to take on this demanding feat. Will the lads make it or will they get broken. They have six months to get their acts together before taking on Sawgrass. Welcome to Breaking Tim & Joonas (the best title for a video series we’ve ever come up with).
In this episode, Joonas joins the fight and flies to Dallas where he and Tim get a quick lesson from our PGA-pro friend Brendan. The fellas then set out for a cheeky 18 so you can see the state of their games.

hi I’m Tim Urban and I’m about a five
handicap golfer right now I’m starting a
journey that will culminate in me
attempting to break 80 this September at
TPC Saw Grass now look I know I’ve got a
lot of work to do but I’ll be getting
some help from some pretty amazing
people along the way this is breaking
Tim hey what’s up Jonas I just heard you
are doing a breaking Series yeah I’m
actually recording the intro for it
right now can I join you of course
that’d be sick hell yeah so how do we
start I think the best place to start is
probably for you to get on a plane and
come over here to Dallas so we can get
started filming um but first you need to
record an intro hi my name is Jonas I’m
a 15 handicap I’m starting a journey
that will end in 6 months when I try to
break 90 at TPC sress I know I have a
lot of work to do before that but I have
some amazing people that will help me
and guide me on how to break 90 at TPC
sress welcome to Breaking team
and
Jones right I just got to the course
waiting for Jonas to get here it is uh
it’s pretty cold this morning but I am
very very excited to get this started
get this journey really started look
this is something I’ve wanted to do for
a long time something like this to
really put a Target on the wall
challenge myself to get better at golf
and and also to show that to y’all right
to see that process hopefully you guys
can learn stuff from Jonas’s Journey
from my journey and this morning we are
meeting up with my buddy Brendan uh
brandan Richardson he’s a fantastic PGA
Pro here locally but today we’re going
to do a little short game lesson before
we go out and play just to give us
something to to really that we can we
can use today that can really
potentially impact our scores right out
of the gate look at this guy you’ve been
in the states for a day and you’re
driving a charger I’m whipping at the r
let’s go what’s up man I’m good I’m good
hey ready to do this thing yeah I’ve be
scared too I know the chipping game is
like your most confident part of your
game
right come on never be scared never be
scared come on let’s have a good day
today we’re going to do a little review
on where my game’s at I’m going to show
him kind of what I’m doing and then just
let him clean it up hopefully and then
we’re going to go over to Jonas and
Brandon’s going to work with him
hopefully give him some stuff that he
can use uh today on the round to maybe
start out this series on a good note so
all right Brandon so um what do we got
my short game’s actually been feeling
pretty good thanks largely to you and
then just doing I believe what you’ve
showed me so what I thought what I
really wanted to do is just show you
kind of how I’m approaching the short
game the chipping and then uh let you
kind of clean it up cool so I’ve been
chipping a lot with a 60 and a 56 good
so I’m going to just start with the 60
uh for you amateur golfers out there
always build a relationship with either
one club or two clubs around the green
all right you don’t need to be making
all these different changes with
multiple clubs just have one club or two
clubs that you love using I I just want
to see how you’re swinging what it looks
like what your feels
are there you go one of the things that
I have been working on is uh is just
letting the letting the length of the
Swing dictate the speed instead of
trying to AB get pokey with it R my mind
yeah kind of what Tim said there guys is
a big thing that me and him hit on when
we got together the way I teach short
game is always making sure that you want
your shoulders and your hands together
in your swing always right so Tim has a
very nice narrow stance is shoulders and
hands are always going back together
that’s what you want in your short game
you mind if I see a little bit longer
longer shot here I got I got more golf
balls come on down we when we go further
distances the swing should not change
guys it should always just be one
continuous motion if anything you’re
just taking a little bit further back
yeah that’s
nice I love how very controlled you are
last time we got together it was a
little bit more all over the place a
little bit I mean look I like to think
of myself as an artist hey that’s what
you are Picasso yeah absolutely but no
I’m excited to see how Jonas is and how
his short game is but Tim is doing
really good so let’s go let’s get into
it all right Jonas why don’t you walk me
through it talk me through it your
process your feels um Tim had some
really really nice and beautiful words
about his short game but mine is a lot
simpler at least now so I just try to
keep my weight on my front foot so I
don’t like fat everything because that
that that was one of the biggest issu I
have been actually using like an a IR or
like a beaching witch but I would like
love to get like a real sweet step in
there and we’ll just get right into it
like the biggest thing that you said
there is having weight on your left side
I love that that will reduce uh the risk
of having that Leading Edge really dig
into that
ground at least I’m
consistent
consistently there he is now look let’s
let’s talk about that difference there
your left hand right got in here and
then the Palm got through it like that
the hands were a little bit more ahead
that’s what I want to see how you’re
kind of leaning already that way
naturally that’s what I want you to
start feeling right so like this right
we’re kind of we’re on that left side
but you’re not really trusting it so
we’re here and then we’re kind of like
backing up into a little bit I want you
to always fully commit into that left
side there you
go very good
yeah look at this guy already a world of
difference so the audience out there if
you’re having trouble with the duffs the
chunks always make sure that you’re
getting that left hand a little bit more
forward waight on your left side and get
through the shot
right there you go look at this guy yeah
okay you like that yeah yeah yeah like
little bit easier like makes me somewhat
more confident that I’m going to like
hit the ball first not the ground
feeling like you’re ready to take this
out on the course yeah AB score
abolutely for literally tens of people
to watch yeah yeah yeah so I’m going to
I’m going to do my best today which uh
look you Pi let’s go let’s go Blues okay
it’s cold today guys we’re going to play
from the blue teas because it’s cold you
know look there’s a camera what do you
think we were doing today Jonas all
right guys uh this is Tim and Jonas we
were watching this with you um after the
round wanted to get some commentary here
damn what a do yeah Jonas honestly you
started this this round really well yeah
yeah and like Brandon said like oh
driver is the worst Club in your
bag NOP yeah then stuff happened well I
mean let’s not give it away too much um
we talk about the the weather a bit here
it was quite cold it was very windy yeah
um that does play a factor here yeah and
like you can see like the tire tracks
right there that’s like the course was
super wet as well it was yeah nice pot
to yeah I mean you’re going to see today
I think in this in this round that my
putting at the start of this journey is
definitely my strong
suit far on the first I do I think I
even
yeah oh my God great start great start
to the series so excited second hole
looks like we’re under 400 yd yeah a
little
375 all right so after we put this video
together we realized that we needed a
bit more context from me and Jonas about
this round of golf and also this journey
cuz this is the start
right look at that shot Tracer uh but we
really just wanted to give you guys a
bit more context on kind of where our
games are at the strengths weaknesses um
at the start of this yard or so going to
be done as well I’m going to go 56 as
well so so when you’re watching this um
feel free to point out what you think we
should work on in the comments um and
Jonas you have some thoughts as well on
what you should be working on as do I on
what I should be on so mhm this was a
really good Chip Shot though that was
fire I had the teaching from Brandon
like fresh M Brandon is a really good
short game coach uh chipping he’s he’s
really good um I should have had him fix
my putting next time we get together
we’ll do a putting lesson okay but now
you have a better Putter and maybe the
stroke is better as well I’m I will be
spending so much time working on third
hole out here is a par five back into
the wind it’s a long one it is a very
long one and there’s water all down the
right side so
yeah man that’s like finished like low
and what am I do bouncing towards the
water a big ass wipe with the driver
that’s exactly what it is and my foot
literally slipped there by my right foot
just I did a Scotty Sheffer on accident
if you like compare my driver like like
the release and yours there’s like this
like this much of a difference like
where the shaft goes
that actually hurt I remember how much
it was so cold and windy uh the
microphones cleaned it up a lot nice
yeah there were several shots that I hit
that were very painful and then a few
that I hit that I thought this is really
good and I looked and it wasn’t anywhere
close cuz destroyed by the
wind sorry Jonas yeah that golf shot
went nowhere 171 yards left go with a
five iron keep it low Drop got off the
right side over to the
green so one of the things that uh has
become apparent with my game you see it
in this video the I’m I’m very
indecisive when I’m picking what shot to
hit oh that was great Jonas all right oh
my I think hey this shot was good though
Mone yeah that was good uh I’m pretty
the pot after that one that that’s the
this one yeah the next pot from me
that’s money
amazing but I just I’m indecisive here
about what I’m trying to hit whether
it’s a draw fade um like what I want to
do actually not this part no the part
after this yeah yeah no I I knew I knew
that one this one was amazing oh just
the best putt on YouTube golf like full
on horor show but here’s the thing sit
down it did break that much it just had
to get past the hole oh oh wow this is
what it is today okay like this is where
the game this where the game’s at we’re
being honest with you guys this is uh
this is a tricky conditions but it’s
also a good good way to start the series
right
absolutely one thing that happens pretty
quick Jonas had a really good drive on
the first right and then the driver
starts going squirly yeah so every T
boox we thinking is it a driver and I
think at some point here we just decide
it’s not driver anymore yeah it’s not
driver anymore and like I I think I told
you before the round that like I would
try the hit driver as much as I can but
then after like I don’t know the fifth
hole I’m
yeah yeah well that was as much as you
could that yeah and and that’s like a
pretty good representation of how the
drivers looking Jonas hey yeah
aggressive swing here results don’t
matter a couple of holes into this thing
and anybody watching is thinking Tim’s
trying to break 80 and you’re trying to
break 90 like it should be the other way
around yeah the scores results are
pretty solid man really Back N yeah yeah
stick around stick around see what
happens oh man I felt bad for Brendan
cuz he was he was tagging along this
front nine just kind of watching and
seeing the rest of our games obviously
we some short game and then watching the
rest of it and you just oh man you got
to hit it he had to be thinking like
these guys are going to get destroyed at
TPC Saw Grass yeah like I’m not going to
spoil anything for you
guys the video that we filmed with Brian
bro a couple days ago for this series
yeah yep it was special there’s so much
fun content coming down the line on this
series uh and that watching this video
um knowing this is the start of it oh it
was good CHP and it was gone yeah man I
figured out like throughout these
videos that uh the the classic Tim round
of golf that was a great part the
classic Tim round of golf is one where
if you were just watching the swings
you’d be like oh okay and then you look
at the score card and you go there’s not
a single par yet yeah it’s bogey bogey
double double Bogey and cuz I just threw
putts
away oh here’s the driver again I think
this was the last hold with the drive I
think we said enough and look at this
see okay there’s the indecisive if you
if you watch that back my feet were
pointed left cuz I was thinking should I
cut it and then literally as I’m
standing over the ball I think I I
thought let’s hit a draw but aim left
and just pulled it into the street like
my swing looked pretty good like from
far away so remember I told you that
when we filmed together and I’m in front
of you looking back the swing looks
money and then I never know for sure
sure what that means about the results
so if we film rest of this episodes like
I would be always like 100 yard to
you dude this was a phenomenal shot yeah
that was a good bunker shot I believe
that this right here is some of the best
short game I’ve ever put on
camera I think that was really
I think and then I believe the puttting
here might
be yeah the if you struggle with putting
just please don’t watch oh I made it oh
yeah I kind of thought I three putt that
cuz I believe that’s an eight cuz my
first one was out of bounds like I think
that’s no Jonas I think we’ve we’ve
noticed your putter might be too short
oh that was a horrible pool what am I
doing listen there’s always a blow p for
me there it was and now we’re done with
it uhh and now we get our game together
on the trickiest goofle on this okay
this a driver
again oh oh it’s just it’s beautiful
it’s a work of art yeah it it it’s a
handsome Drive Sean it’s very handsome
it’s a handsome
Drive why I I like doing this yes
absolutely am I really doing this yes
you are
and I thought play it safe and by
playing it safe what I meant was throw
this one into the woods on the right
that good yeah I should also hit
phenomenally well if you’re watching
this and you don’t know Tim and Jonas’s
game you’d be like what what is this
series Tim is not a five handicap Jonas
is not a 15 I don’t believe them but the
whole point of this episode was to level
set and show you guys what a straight up
round looks like for these two so this
was the result but we were just worried
like with with the drive from Jonas the
hand the hand gesture uh we’re worried
like oh man they’re just going to click
away so let’s go provide some context
but like my lowest round ever is 87 so
like I have already broke a 90 but that
was in Finland so like like I have the
game in me but then just like like
things happen and I get on a plane and
fly to Dallas in freezing cold windy
weather yeah but it is like Midsummer in
Finland yeah it’s still pretty chilly we
just felt like man this looks like we
genuinely can’t play golf but we also
didn’t want to just get rid of the round
this is what happened right this is the
start of the journey that being said I
do have a bet with the editor of the
series oie uh I’m betting I bet 250 on
each of you to not break your goals of
soag what I did I I saw this and I’m
like yeah there’s no way there’s no
world that I do it did he take the bed
he thinks we’re going to he took the bed
he thinks what let’s go oi he actually
believes in you guys I’ll leave you

enemy play it to
Perfection oh what a
park oh wow back toback pars basically
69 watches back on hey we on to the
ninth hole it’s a par five this is the
last hole before Brendan gives us some
thoughts on our games uh and then we
finish out the 18 to record that first
score
so you hit something
hard oh there it middle of the Fairway
that’s
hilarious oh that’s a great ball hey
important thing important thing to note
here the driver for Jonas is a big
problem but the Fairway
Woods be usually work yeah and a lot of
the shots that you see here for me
they’re not that far off it is just a
it’s indecision it’s setting up and like
I’m aimed for a fade try to hit a draw
like I’m just not committed yeah and
that was that became very apparent that
that’s got to get cleaned
up um that was a good yeah watch this
watch this watch this watch this little
wedge shot ooh Zippy from nice like both
of the extremes the back now
um the back D things clear clean up a
bit that was another triple I think yeah
or double triple so Bren is going to
give us some feedback from him and then
we start the back nine yeah so front
nine is done let’s see how much I scored
because I can remember 47 oh okay almost
in like on Pace with breaking but like
three pars I I love Jonas’s just natural
stance and swing already I think a big
thing that would help you is we’ve kind
of talked about it through the nine
holes is when you go up to that upswing
making sure that your first initial
feeling is going into the shot and
staying down and through it um putting I
love your putting stands I like to see a
little bit more work in the shoulders
like we talked about uh kind of up there
before we started but yeah overall Jonas
is a really good golfer he’s a lot of
potential um I think if you just hit the
range a lot like the and just grind it
out yeah get to the Grind like the rest
of us you’re going to see a lot of
results that you’re going to be happy
with what about me Brandon what do I
need to do to for Timothy dude for Tim
no Tim uh as y’all saw those last three
holes Tim’s got a lot of potential I
think uh once once Tim plays for a shot
shape or just is really comfortable over
the ball we see really good results
right we’re not we’re not hoping that
it’s going to not go here or we’re
hoping that it goes over here it’s just
having a process routine um but for
driving I would love love for you just
to play a draw or play a fate and just
work on that you know appreciate it yeah
no problem out guys hey okay so what I’m
going to do I’m going to try to commit
to plane that fade off the te every time
that I did on the last one I’m going to
try to play that drive off the T anytime
I’m pulling driver okay that’s that to
me is going to be huge yeah play that
fade and I’m just going to try and like
keep in the shot and like not lift
myself up too high and maybe maybe like
experiment with the driver because yeah
the issue is probably like when I’m
trying to hit it up I’m like leaning
back and that’s where the glove face so
Back N I remember I just this is one of
the funniest things that I’ve ever seen
in why am I hating the driver I don’t
know I said I’m going to play the fade
and then I played the fade right into a
tree but it’s like if like if that would
not have hit the tree it probably would
have faded to oh yeah yeah it was it was
at least to the left rough all right so
um man we’re going to start out with
this with a crooked number here on the
first on the 10th but it’s fine yeah
it’s fine I would have played so much
better if I didn’t hit any bad shots
yeah you hit a great shot
here that was a good bitching wge I
remember that Jonas that’s a phenomenal
shot about 70 yards or so but there’s a
lot of wind all right I know what I’m
going to do ready for this 52° punt shot
lands on the green skids back stops
right by the hole Yeah like you don’t
usually do those chips like those weak
right ones it’s wow yeah I pretty much
did what you said but the wind just went
soon as I hit it I should have done that
with like a almost a nine
iron go go go yeah pound that was such a
good line IIT it you’re going to notice
something Jonas and that is that I don’t
ever get the putts to the whole la la
good yeah you live them yeah that’s
something I’m I’m trying to work on is a
is a
consistent issue that I have I I
need and I made a part after that
drive like it feel like it it’s actually
not as bad as the results of shown today
we’re we’re moving in a good direction
yeah we are that was a great Hole by you
played really well the drive but all all
the other stuff will good all right next
to par 4 it’s like 387 yards dog leg
left it’s pretty wide open looks like
like I’m I’m just going to try and to
hit the driver like and like make some
fixes yeah focusing on releasing MH okay
Jonas I think you still have the driver
and the exact same yeah like what see
this is exactly why I took the bet you
guys wondering why I took the bet
against you guys like you just hit a
tree with your driver then you’re like
you know what time it is driver time
this is YouTube golf baby this is this
yeah but he’s going he’s got to get the
driver figured out if we’re going to if
we’re going to break a TPC it’s true and
I know no spoilers set up with one of
the world’s best coaches this series not
going to drop names it’s going to be a
cracker Banger super sick video love you

Aussie’s money yeah I don’t blame you
for that actually that’s fair but I love
for taking the B I know oh she’s the man
oh that is the way he’s talked about
your game I would not have expected to
take yeah that like that one Zoom call
we had that what a shot but like every
once in a while the woods they really
yeah they they like like like when I can
hit the Fairway which like I hit my
irons it’s usually good but when I try
to hit the driver and and I have to hit
it like a driver yeah doesn’t work yeah
all right so we got like 111 yards uh
wind is like into off the left pretty
hard so I’m going to hit a punch
pitching wedge up there um try to start
it left of the flag and let it drift
back I hit this and went oh that’s money
and then I think beautiful bro right uh
yeah then oh no it actually kept coming
down that’s why you got to get through
this one that’s the key for this toate
through it not worry about the ground
disappearing the bound Feld do the
work oh no I went I went back on it I
just kind of leaned back
yeah that was it that oh and another one
that was a good segment of chipping yeah
we all of us we have these holes so it
is what it
is that’s so so slow Jonas I would like
to see you make this yeah me too that’d
be phenomenal

how bad I can play golf sometimes like
that’s too short Oh you mean the putter

is so this is pretty much the putting St
yeah he’s a he’s a belly putting a
normal length with those what are you
aren’t you 611 or something
yeah hold on we’re missing the point
missing the shot this was an eight iron
from 130 that ended up 50 yard
short the wind was a problem that went
nowhere it might be short of the bunker
all right so the contact on that shot
actually felt pretty good but I knew I
had like compressed it
spinning it’s short of the bunker which
was short of the hole this is this thing
maybe went a 100 yards
hey watch this putt that I sent past the
hole I bet I missed
this oh no wonder why I take the
bet you got to hit it like this is some
of the worst
putting stupid
go on to the 13th it’s not a long par
you you can easy to get there no cuz
it’s straight into the wind like
straight into the wind so so it’s going
to be aay up somewhere I think it’s
going to have to be hey Fairwood this is
a bad one no no this was great like this
was the problem everything was going
right all day with the driver you take a
fairway wood off the tea and hit a nice
little draw problem was you weren’t
ready for
it went left how did I hit it left the
club place what like was that actually
Square on accident
could oh no exactly look at this draw
yeah that one worked out pretty well it
went into the trees and I I was aimed
wrong again so that’s what we’re talking
about right like I should have if I’m
hitting a draw I should have been aimed
more right but I was aimed like neutral
that’s what I do I aim neutral and then
fade it and draw off of that it from the
yeah it’s it’s so bad looking at it now
at the time I thought I was crushing it
I think it will stop I would catch a
flyer or
something good job that was that was
money I think so good and so straight
maybe one 30 which based on that last
shot is a four
iron oh

so I was actually short and then I’m
long then you’re long so you did
remember correctly you just needed an
extra shot to get
there that was terrible wait for this
putt look at this
see he good I’ve got to have realistic
expectations here as of today I’m a 28
handicap
so this was a good chip yeah but it
still went no that’s
okay and I missed it yeah we missed so
manys now if I P I’m sorry if you’ve got
the putting Yips in you’re watching this
yeah like we’re I’m so sorry yeah I
promise you it was more painful for me
oh oh D this is one of those rounds
where if you were playing with your
buddies you wouldn’t care you just like
wouldn’t worry about the score but since
we’re filming this yeah on YouTube it’s
like and this is why it’s going to be a
challenge for me to break 80 for him to
break 90 it’s
so off the oh no oh boy spoiler alert
the one he pulled into the Woods was not
found this was actually a good shot yeah
this was a really good shot just went it
went
long I think no this was on the that’s
the best iron swing I’ve made all day
yeah dude this was a really good shot

yeah I’m going to say what
happened I like watching this back it’s
pretty entertaining I hope it’s
entertaining for y’all but oh no I
forgot I forgot what happened dudee I’m
so sorry thought that went over
no I’m so sorry Jonas I wasn’t trying to
Flame you there look at this this was a
pretty good W shot
oh I think I missed the putt oh no I
miss make that was a part that that
might be the first part of the day for
me big part wait I have one two three
three parts so three doubles in a row
and a driver
again what am I doing actually what am I
doing
it’s really
good this drive was an absolute Monster
uh for me best Drive of the day
downwind and it went a very long ways oh
dude this was a money was a really
good so this is how much of a difference
the Wind made we this is one of like the
first real downwind holes that’s out and
you hit a just a rocket Three Wood M
yeah that’s great
uh so after that drive which I’m decent
poke decent poke um it was close to
350 that’s good really good
Tim that’s really good it’s slightly
long of the pin but on the green so do
we have an eagle putt we have an eagle
putt Jonas is up here left side of the
Fairway great little position into this
pin um you got about 50 yards
um good CH but too long I like the kick
yeah dude you have some of the cutest
leg kicks I’ve ever seen on the golf
course and you know we filmed with like
Sabrina and
Claire but I don’t think any of them
have as cute of a leg as you do it’s my
speciality
yeah look at that oh it was a little
long you want to bet I make a par
here I don’t think I make this but yeah
you are going to make this I don’t I
don’t know I’m going to bet you our
lunch too that they’re going to make I
made
it gets me back to I should remember
like we I played that whole I just oh
that’s a bird that’s what I’m saying I
was in part five
so has this was a really bad wood
yes oh wait a minute this is our
favorite part of the whole video isn’t
it with the uh no it’s not that’s L it’s
later yeah it’s the the last table or is
it I don’t know I’m sure
the the divots going left the ball’s
going right and it showed up with the
three but I honestly don’t know uh
little driving iron here this goes
really good yeah it was a great great
shot I should have aimed more right um
so but that was great contact just kind
of bounced up here past the bunker and I
think this oh this was a good shot this
is a really good shot I am so happy with
that I’m good yeah I’m good almost on
the green let’s go take that all day

yeah again both of those were hit really
well they rolled really well so oh look
at this all the UN necessary
spinner but so here’s the thing I left
myself this for par and do you know what
I really good pull it oh wow [ __ ] all
right here’s where it stands um Jonas is
now on trying to break 100 which means
for the last two holes you need to do
what uh better than 14 Strokes so uh now
yeah so it like sounds a lot because we
have a par four and a par five left so I
I think I have it in me but it like I
like I can’t do triple triple because
and I’ve got to par both of them if I
want to break 90 yeah yeah oh this was a
three-wood see it’s just going right but
Jonas is sending everything this is the
div yeah look at this what am I
doing right there and the te is like
oh this one like 2 in from the divot uh
this one I think is out of bounds and I
yeah that’s be did I was it about I take
a I don’t remember I think I maybe hit a
provisional here so could be uh and
that’s a good one yeah that one worked
out a little
better man if I if I would just hit the
drives hit the drives better short game
better putting better and some more
