Mississippi State Alcorn State baseball recap. Women’s basketball update. Women’s golf SEC champions

Welcome To The Bone Yard with Steve
Robertson as always I am your good
friend and host Steve Robertson here on
the hump day edition of the yard much
later than I hope to be been a busy day
a lot going on lot of book stuff
happening
too lot of book stuff happening we’re 13
chapters into the uh the rough copy of
the dude I don’t know probably got seven
or eight chapters left you know so we’re
we’re rolling man we’re getting this
thing done the goal was to be done
roughing this thing out by the end of I
think there’s a good chance I’ll be done
somewhere around the 1st of May and that
next month we’ll open up pre-orders now
again when you pre-order the book it
doesn’t come until it’s printed right so
we have we deal with that every time
like it’ll say pre-order allow you know
4 to six or whatever 8 to 12 whatever
and then I’ll start getting emails like
the next week I I don’t control any of
that but I’m just letting you know
because many of you have uh had a great
level of interest and this and I’ll tell
you where we are in our development
right now in our
project we have now reached the end of
Duty Noble’s first tenure as your
athletic director major Raph sassy is
about to be hired it is
1935 that’s where we are
now it’s not a year-by-year accounting
though we do go over every year some
years in Greater detail than others like
we wion a conference Championship well
that that deserves some of our time
right but a couple stories that I think
you’re going to find of
interest in the remaining chapters we’re
going to have talk about the coaching
search that led to the hiring of one
Allan
mcken some wild wild stuff about all
that stuff and then uh shortly after
Spike Nelson got fired you may recall
Spike
Nelson shortlived coach here at Missi
state was supposed to be the daer pick
you know to be our savior after we ran
Allan mckin off on a rail which was a
huge mistake
we essentially fired our Bear
Bryant thank you thank you to all you
medling doners back then that thought
you knew better but
nevertheless that Spirit still
exists and they we’re also going to have
a story a little bit later of course
about um the plot to get dudy Noble
fired and maybe you didn’t know about
that those some of the same daers that
got mcken fired were
emboldened and they went after dudy
Noble
and so we’re going to have that to
recount of course they we named The
Stadium after him while he was still a
sitting athletic director we’ll talk
about that we’ll go on to talk about bu
Ferris we’ll talk about um you know the
Legacy many respect so A lot’s happened
you know we’ve covered you know him
being born of course and him being
raised on a farm outside learned
Mississippi came to Mississippi state
had a very storyed athletic career here
and of course came back to be our coach
and so we’ve gotten through all that
we’ve gotten through the chapter of him
going to Old Miss and coaching which was
um chapter six in the book it’s very
difficult to write it’s almost like
writing about the person or the woman or
guy you love and writing about them
being with somebody else it’s very
awkward right but uh yeah it’s been a
fun I’m having a blast man I’ve had
never had more fun writing a book than I
have writing this one and it’s really
become an obsession as of late that’s
one of the reasons you’ve seen this
thing jump from you know six seven
chapters to 13 very quickly I mean I’ve
did some extens research and part of the
the more difficult part of something
like this is when you reach the end of a
chapter you you have to kind of sit and
contemplate and think about okay how do
I want to tell the next part of this
story and so you go through your your
stuff you walk outside you know you you
take the dogs out there and you kind of
just uh walk around the property a
little bit kind of get your mind right
and you come back and sit down and start
riding and and thank God that the must
of that comes from you know the
god-given ethos you know it’s all out
there you just kind of get the facts and
you begin to kind of write your
narrative and you cite the right people
when you use their quotes and things of
that nature but um it’s a process so
book number seven coming your way very
very very soon we discuss uh winning SEC
championships and we have done that
before in our in our history but we have
a new one to celebrate and I wanted to
kind of open the show with
this and I want to offer number one
congratulations but uh
thanks to our student athletes that are
involved with this newest
championship and the glory that they
have brought to Mississippi State
University for the first time ever our
women’s golf
team is number
one in the Southeastern Conference
absolutely number one and so I want to
be able to uh you know to again to to
name these individuals and I will do my
best because we have uh we do have some
uh
some players that are from outside the
United States and so I may mispronounce
some names which is kind of on brand for
me uh so I will do my best but it does
not in any way
represent my true sentiment because I am
very very grateful Chiara hoarder by way
of Munich
Germany
sarapa uh
jumani and here this is going to be a
tough one
here uh
R kagari from Thailand Julia Lopez
Ramirez Izzy pellet or Pat I don’t know
how you pronounce that Anna Pino Ortega
Avery weed
Samantha Whitley uh thank you all so
much for your contributions to
Mississippi State and doing something
that we have never done
before it’s true we we listen we have
made some real advancements in women’s
Athletics in the last decade we truly
have uh for many years we kind of did
women’s sports and you know for one
reason or another it was just kind of
something that we did but we’ve made
some really good hires we’ve made a
commitment financially to these programs
Al lo and behold we’re reaping the
benefits and so tremendous day uh to win
the Southeastern Conference
tournament can’t even begin to say how
rewarding it is to see so many of our
fans you know have like you know hey
you’re like Steve you know let’s just
kind of get behind all this because of
the fact that um we may not be Avid fans
of women’s golf but we are fans of
Mississippi State and these young ladies
have won our logo and have gotten out
and represented our University with
class and dignity and have done
something historic so ladies to each of
you and your families thank you so much
for your contributions to Mississippi
State and to Mississippi State Athletics
a job well done to each of you and your
coaches let’s thank our friends at
Bulldog Burger Company longtime sponsors
of this show I got to get in there again
this week I I like to get in there two
to three times a month sometimes more
than that like if I have friends that
come in from out of town they always
sayy Steve I’d love to take you to lunch
or uh just let the break bread whatever
uh where do you want to go I I typically
say Bulldog Burger Company not just
because I’m a raving fan but I want them
to experience it too and I love to eat
shop and done local that’s me that’s
kind of starville too you know we don’t
really support the national chains here
we love our local restaurants and nobody
does a better job providing the local
restaurant Downing experience than the
eat with us group and of course Bulldog
Burger Company part of that proud proud
organization when you’re in
town come by and check it out a bulldog
Burger Company uh the three locations to
serve you University Drive in Stark
Vegas glosser Street there in Tupelo
Lake Harbor Drive in the rigin Flowood
area
go in and have the spring rolls as your
appetizer you will be
amazed and surprised and how much better
looking you’ll be because it makes you
and everybody around you better looking
it’s even on the menu it’s not a joke
trust the science they
say make the world a more beautiful
place have the spring rolls and then get
that great restaurant quality hamburger
you know if you’re new to Bulldog Burger
Company I advise you to get the Bulldog
you can’t go wrong with the Bulldog you
can eat the Bulldog like every day from
now on and uh and you’d be great and be
satisfied right but I listen I’m an
adventurous person I like to walk on The
Wildside a little bit so I have eaten
everything on the menu I can highly
highly recommend each of them but I’ll
tell you I do have some favorites the
Bryant the Lauren among my favorites The
Freshman
15 The
Smokehouse maybe get out and try some do
new things for yourself and I get
dessert to go it’s always a great thing
when I when I eat the bread pudding
sometimes I eat it there but but a lot
of times it’s so convenient just to get
that that chocolate shake to go cuz
sometimes that’s exactly what you need
is a pallet cleanser you can ride that
ride home with a
smile Bulldog Burger Company the place
where people go to meet
meat all right let’s talk a little bit
about last night’s baseball game it went
pretty much as we
expected I mean it it wasn’t like some
uh you know some deal you look at and
say you know what it’s a big game for us
matter of fact the RPI was uh kind of a
killer for us too I mean with many
respects and people say well why play
the game well you play the game so you
can get some young guys in there too I
mean as Lona said last night we haven’t
had that game very often because he
non-conference games have been so
competitive but you like to be able to
play a lot of people you know Dylan cops
a guy to kind of working back from a
from a knee issue and he gets back on
the field lo and behold gets a very
difficult play the very first time he’s
out there but uh also a nice RBI single
last night from
Dylan but uh yeah a good game for us a
chance for us to get some guys some work
and that’s what these non-conference
games are supposed to be about of course
State uh you know wins the game 11 to
nothing and uh we’re 18-0 all time
against alorn State and listen the
Braves listen I got a lot of respect for
our HBCU in Mississippi I do and they’re
awful awfully
underfunded in aorn state right now
spending some money to kind of renovate
their home venue having to play many of
their home games at natch’s high school
yeah that’s a tough thing I mean it
really is hey you’re we’re going to play
D1 baseball we’re going to go play a
high school field that’s tough it really
is but it’s good to see them investing
some money in college baseball try and
improve their program so let’s run
through it real quick
here Pico con uh your starter and uh
there’s a couple things that I want to
say
too no matter what happens with this
ball game right I I don’t care I said
this earlier on on Facebook because some
listen I love all of you but some of
y’all make my head hurt
nobody expected All cornn State game to
be
competitive nobody and if it had been
there’ been blood in the
streets but what Pico con did last night
is impressive I don’t care if he’s
throwing against air I don’t care if
it’s a YMCA te ball team this is a young
man that has had to overcome a major
surgery and uh I I could get pretty
angry about this if if I led
myself but some of the dises respect
that I’ve seen for the
game really irritates me I mean it it
does my wife would tell me don’t let to
bother you but it does it bothers me
because the big lesson learned from last
night is that Pico con is rounding back
in the form and that could be a big
piece for us down the stretch we talk
about the bullpen woes we can’t go trade
for anybody but now all of a sudden the
guy it kind of begins to emerge so you
know what maybe he can eat up some
innings for us on a weekend
and be a guy that can help us bridge the
gap and and get to uh you know a victory
that’s a good thing and last night he
looked more like pico than he’s looked
all year right he had the one little you
kind of you know relief deal and then we
bring him in and start him against
Sanford and um I thought his V was
pretty good against Sanford his control
was not but last night was very
promising and again I I don’t care if
he’s throwing a bullpen when you’re
spotting up 9192 from the left and
you’re able to land your breaking ball
for a strike with
regularity that is something to get
excited
about because we need Bullpen relief we
need some guys that can go in there and
throw strikes and get outs and be
winners and Pico is very very very
competitive this has got it pitched
extensively for us back in
20122 and uh just you know never could
quite get right and we were hoping he
would be a challenge for a starting spot
in 2023 and you find out pretty early
he’s probably not going to be able to
pitch and never really has the UC tear
but had a very very very very
very bad
situation with that uh that ligament and
so they went ahead and elected hey it’s
just it’s a tick and Time Bomb it’s just
a matter of time before this thing goes
so let’s go ahead and correct it now
which is one of the reasons he was able
to come back a little quicker than most
but I share that with you because they
were very patient with them last year
and I can tell you I I’ve gotten this
from a third party not from your
coaching staff that Scott foxall and
Chris ammonis could not have handled
Pico con better last year than they did
you know they didn’t push him too much
they were very patient with him and
they’ve been very supportive of him
throughout this well now all of a sudden
now he’s back in a position to help us
so let’s be grateful for that if we
don’t take anything other than the
victory away from last night is the fact
that Pico came in did a great job for us
con excuse me pico con or KH I I confuse
myself but Paladino opens up with the
ground out right back to Pico and then
Martin strikes out looking and then
Banks Colin Banks Jr grounds out to
second
base so uh couple groundouts there soft
contact you always love to see that all
bottom of the first St goes to work we
get a little help here early and we knew
the stolen basee was going to be an
issue we discuss that a little bit in
our preview on on Tuesday if you read
that over on Jean’s page aor cannot
throw people out and uh what we go five
or six from stolen bases but Amman Larry
walks and takes second on the pass ball
then steals third they walk Maran he
Stills second I mean it’s just you know
you know what it’s like Jordan singles
to left field both run score and I
honestly feel like we don’t run
enough and I think it’s situational and
we’re green a lot as Lona says but uh
when it’s a first and third situation
you know unless you’ve got Johnny Bench
Jr behind the plate we need to take
second we really do put pressure on the
defense make them make a play a lot of
times they won’t even throw down if you
get a good enough jump you just get it
all the way uh but DJ singles in left
field two run scor it’s t the ball game
and then DJ still second and hind
grounds out the first pushes DJ to Third
and then heack with the ground ball to
the right side gets the run home good
situational hitting here really that’s a
good job right there
on a 1-1 count push that ball to the
right side get the run home it’s three
nothing doesn’t matter who the opponent
is and we talked a little bit about that
you know when you get those elongated
games and all of a sudden the game has
been decided one way or another
sometimes you lose intensity at the
plate games like this when you know
you’re going to win you got to go out
there and lock in and this is good
situational hitting this is a good ab
here from Conor heac Bryce Jansen
singles through the left side and uh
pushes to run it to Third and then uh
excuse me bases are empty there and then
Bryce gets on and gets caught stealing
that was a bit of a surprise too I I
didn’t get a chance to see the jump
there but it kind of surprised me got
thrown out but uh you know we’re taking
bags here right we’re taking bags three
stolen bases in the inning and three
runs score it’s incredible how that
works you get yourself in a scoring
position all of a sudden you don’t even
need the benefit of a base hit to get
you home in some situations all right
top a second Pico right back out here
really good job strike out swinging
gz and grounds out to the short stop and
cast and Strikes Out Swinging and if you
look at these counts all Advantage
counts that’s another thing you look at
the Nuance of the game here right you
even go back to the beginning right so
we’re now we’re six hitters deep into
this and he has thrown a first pitch
strike to everybody and that’s what you
want to do is attack hitters the most
important pitching baseball strike one
all bottom of a second state goes one
two three Coler strikes out looking but
that was not a good ab and we got to get
him going Powell pops up to Second and
imp pulum grounds out to third so
nothing doing for State there in a
second top of third Pico back out for
his final inning of work here and U it’s
a strikeout swinging and again we’re
getting ahead 01 Lopez strikes out
looking and again getting ahead barell
hits a double inside the bag at third
but he was in an 02 count maybe we catch
a little bit too much at the plate there
and then Paladino grounds out the second
so nine innings excuse me nine
hitters 10 excuse me 10 at bats so we
Face 10 hitters in three Innings and
nine of the 10 see a first pitch
strike and lo and behold we retire nine
of the
10 with five strikeouts and no walks if
that does not encourage you I don’t know
what does that’s something again we’re
going to continue to monitor his
progress It’s begin you think about it
it’s almost like signing a free agent
bottom of third ammani Strikes Out
Swinging then mine walks and then DJ
triples to center field and uh that was
going to be an extra base hit no matter
what happened in center field he slips
down there but that Ball’s over the head
it is and so it’s an RBI triple Maran
scores on the play Then hin is hit by
the pitch so now of a sudden you got
Runners on the corners and here this
again a great situation here as heac
walks lengthy at bat and it’s good to
see him kind of locked in a little bit
situational hitting the first time up
and then he he gets an this count here
gets a one-1 count and then works it for
the uh for the Bas on balls to load the
bases and uh what do you know we get the
Fly ball to uh to
right and DJ scores it’s a good
situational heading and then I I don’t
know what Hunter was thinking but he
decides to take a bag there and they
they get him out so it ends up being a
double
play bit of a base running blunder there
but State taxs on two more in the inning
top of four
Carson Lian comes in to get some work
and play a
Pico Jackson McKenzie comes in for
Hunter hin Martin walks that’s the last
thing you want to do as a relief pitcher
is come out there and walk the leadoff
guy in the very first pitch of he bats
the ball too but you do get into a
one-two Advantage count and then walk
him you can’t get out there and nibble
you got to finish hitters Banks strikes
out looking and in the middle of this
bat we actually picked the runner off uh
after the K there we pick him off off
it’s like he thought it was Ball Four it
was almost like the heac thing right
when heac came down the line at third
similar to that he just starts trotting
off there we pick him off and then uh
cell lines out to center field so you do
get the one walk but you get out of that
by facing the minimum bottom of four
they pull Michael
Len and bring in Garcia here he walks
ker and then ker pretty crazy situation
here ends up going they try to pick him
off and he goes all the way around to
third so now all of a sudden lead off
guys is already on third with nobody out
got to get this run home here and what
do you know situational hitting again
you want to get the base hit but the
very minimum you want to do a job we do
we get an RBI sack fly make it 6 nothing
pulling him then walks and Larry doubles
to center it’s good to see him kind of
swinging the bat a little bit better
last couple ball games even though he
had had a lot to show it he had that
double It Old Miss but uh he’s hit some
balls hard we double left Center here
pushes pull him to Third and then it’s a
wild pitch everybody moves up it’s a
seven nothing ball game rondan walks DJ
Strikes Out Swinging not a greaty bat
there michon steals second and then
Jackson McKenzie walks and then heack
Strikes Out Swinging so you know you got
to the heart of your order here and you
can’t you can’t have these KS you just
can’t all right top of five and a seven
at and ball game we bring in black and I
thought this is the best the Gavin black
has looked in probably a
month really look good really look good
pounding the strik Zone throws a heavy
fast ball he just has to kind of keep it
down Gad Strikes Out Swinging Caston
reaches on a throwing era here and this
is when Dylan CS in the ball game it’s
just kind of part of it don’t don’t get
down on a kid he’s still working back
from that knee uh lucky then Strikes Out
Swinging and Lopez flies out to right
field uh but yeah a good effort here by
by uh by black for sure and he’s the guy
that’s going to have to help us they
bring in Brazil
here who uh is a weekend guy and I don’t
I just think you know maybe this is a
left-hander but I’m thinking you know
are they just trying to give this kid
the the opportunity to kind of work on
some things a chance to pitch at
Mississippi State well he comes in he
walks the first two hitters chanceen
kler and then Powell flies out to left
we move the runner up so even though
it’s an out it’s a productive out and
then Ethan Pam former soccer teammate of
my youngest son Ian Robertson
synergetics for life we went undefeated
that year won a championship Ethan pum
ridiculous ridiculous soccer player too
single through the left side RBI base
hit his first is a bulldog Larry then
reach is on the fielders Choice there
they force Ethan at
second and then Larry still second they
throw the ball away Coler scores on the
ER it’s a nine nothing ball game and
then Dylan cup comes up and really
mashes ball here on a 3-1 count back up
the middle to chase Larry home to make
it 10 nothing Nolan Stevens pinch hits
and hits a single left it’s you know we
just kind of keep rolling here but it’s
good to see some of these guys get get
some quality of best Jackson McKenzie
works for a walk here Michael O’Brien
comes in works it for a basis loaded
walk that forces a run home to make it
11 nothing to cap our scoring Aaron DS
comes in and hits and uh reaches on the
fielders Choice
here but um they just step on the bag
really thought that third baseman from
aorn State he’s a he’s a beef ofier guy
I mean I don’t know how well he moves
laterally but I thought he played pretty
well we had some we had some rockets at
that kid and he fielded them all right
top of six
liberally substituting here uh Stevens
goes to right orrian is Center down to
left so we completely change out the
Outfield and then Nate Chester goes in
at third for Logan kler and then Kobe
hul comes in and uh yes I understand
it’s aorn state but I thought Kobe
looked really good here he gets a barell
swinging Paladino kind of gets an excuse
me swing single on an 02 count just kind
of the ball meeting the bat there Martin
Strikes Out Swinging and then Banks
Strikes Out Swinging uh colig up to 97
on the gun yesterday bottom of six they
changed pitchers again Chester singles
back up the box and then Joe Pavo
grounds into a double play and pulling
him singles through the left side his
second hit is a bulldog and I’m sitting
there thinking uh maybe the kid should
be our right-handed DH right he takes
second and a wild pitch and then spaleta
grounds out second base top of seven the
final half ining to play here bring in
Logan forides and I thought he looked
good too you know that’s a kid with a
lot of talent we got to get him going
Corell Strikes Out Swinging link to get
bat there and then gz singles to left I
I I’ll be honest with you I didn’t like
the pitch selection and this it bat I
understand it’s an 11 nothing ball game
I get that but you could tell that this
kid was starting to kind of time up the
fast ball like he barely fouled one back
then he fouls one in over the Bulldog
Dugout then he fouls another one into
the net just outside of third base and
what what does he do he takes a fast
ball out to left field when you start
seeing it happen you got to make an
adjustment you do and I don’t I don’t
know if that’s on Parker and listen I
get it’s 11 ball game but you got to
maintain some some level of intensity
here and if you’re Logan Foreside I mean
we don’t need to have these lengthy bats
you got to find a way to finish hitters
not trying to pick apart the performance
by any stretch but I really thought you
know hey this is a guy here let’s you
know if he’s shown that he can time up
the fast ball let’s drop the breaker on
him and see how he handles
that uh casting Strikes Out Swinging
Lucky Strikes Out Swinging that ends a
ball game and so again a very efficient
effort and against still some teachable
moments in the ball
game but uh yeah you look you know lot
of people got to swing it yesterday
Bulldogs had nine hits in the ball game
and some of that too is a byproduct of
the fact they were walking us a lot but
your hitting stars Dakota Jordan and
Ethan pulam with h two hits a piece
pulam two for three on the day with a
run scored and an RBI uh pretty
impressive uh you for the for the young
guy there I mean to get in there and to
get his first Bulldog start and to
perform the way way that he did Dakota
Jordan two for three two runs scored
three RBI he uh certainly your MVP of
the game but again I don’t want to just
absolutely glaze over this pitching
effort either we allowed just three hits
and uh one of those of course that
excused me swing single off Colby
hul Carson lean goes one inning one
strike out one walk Gavin black two two
punch outs no walks for him Kobe hul
three punch outs and then the uh the
little single and then four side uh
three punch outs to strikes out the side
so Bulldog’s 14 strikeouts uh in the
ball game and just the three hits there
and and there was never a challenge
offense we nor did we expect one against
a team it’s 2 and
27 and all due respect to alorn you know
we probably could have pulled nine kids
out of the stands and U in 24 bats
managed to put a few balls and play but
uh really nice effort from the the
Bulldogs U and again we had to take care
of business we do and now we get ready
for alurn we’re going to preview the
Auburn series on the Friday show we will
take a few moments uh to kind of review
the scores of last night kind of a kind
of a wild night in the
sec2 some big numbers put up and some
surprising results too but the Air Force
heads down to College Station Texas our
friends from Air Force of course they
they uh they had a tough M Night excuse
me tough tough night uh tough ball game
a 10-run ruled by The agies Who are
absolutely rolling right now
currently ranked number one in the
country about that I’ll be they better
not expect them to be I they have found
some production the bottom half of that
old it’s tough and of course with two
big left-handers going on the weekend
they’re tough that’s a midweek win there
15 to5 against an Air Force Team now
it’s 15- 20 overall and 8- six in their
league I remember people telling me
beginning of the year they thought
they’d be a tournament team I remember
that uh bellermine who is now six and 30
they go in Knoxville
that game actually goes to full nine
innings I guess the 10-run roll was not
an effect because Tennessee wins that
game 20
to5 20 to5 and scored uh just three runs
in the eighth and ninth inning maybe
bellermine just needed to get some work
but that thing goes to full nine and
gets a pretty gy score there but uh you
know seven runs there in the second to
kind of put that game away early or so
you thought and then bman bounces back
with four in the third so it’s a seven4
ball game uh Midway through the third
but of course Tennessee does take care
of business there uh Jacksonville who
beat Florida in the midweek earlier this
year they get 10r run rolled last night
12 to1 by the Gators who are now 19 and
17 and again that series loss still
haunts us it does and I think we’re
going to look back and say you know what
that that was significant of course KAG
leó with the big Jack last night they
said it went over 500 ft but 12-1
winners are the Gators who are now seven
and8 in the SEC we’ already recovered
the covered uh the aorn state Missi
State game uh Vanderbilt who had a very
tough weekend bounces back 15 to four
winners over libum libum in their league
has been very competitive a lot of
people thought that they would win the
Atlantic Sun this year they’re seven and
eight in conference play but 1124
overall Vanderbilt wins 15 to four pound
out 12 hits in the ball game uh probably
feel good about getting the bats going
but they’re eight and seven in the
league we’re seven and eight so we’re
right there with them that that series
with them in Nashville l Bo’s large
that’s one we got to go up there and at
least get one and we I think we could
win that series if we swing the bats but
if we swing them like we did on Sunday
uh we’re not going to beat Peabody
college but um I
digress Kentucky gets down early in his
ball game to
Louisville 2 to one and what a wild game
it end up becoming they scored nine runs
over the next two innings in Louisville
Kentucky to take a 10-2 lead Louisville
comes back with three to make it a 10
five ball game and then in the fourth
it’s a 10-7 game you’re thinking this
thing’s going to go down to the wire and
ky’s like no we’ve got this number three
Kentucky now they put up five runs in
the top of the fifth and began to just
kind of pull away from there even though
they um you know had to get some outs
late as Louisville puts up three in the
eighth but it’s a 1713 ball game 33 hits
in this ball
game that’s a tough night man that’s a
long night for everybody involved UAB
goes into Tuscaloosa our friends from
UAB and they take care of Alabama 5 to2
it’s it’s two runs in the first and
Alabama counters and then it’s just 0 00
0 and then in the fifth UAB puts two
more across and then scores one in the
eth Alabama does not score after the
first inning maybe they were filling
their oats a little bit after winning
the series against
Arkansas and think
hey we should be rank you know come on
come
on you got to look at the full body of
work guys you can’t just look at a
weekend but uh nevertheless they’re 18th
in the country I kind of challenge the
validity of that but uh so that they
legitimize that ranking by dropping that
game 5-2 The Old Miss Arkansas State
game was
canceled and then uh South Carolina four
three winners over the Citadel a much
tougher game I think than most people
anticipated and Carolina’s 8 and7 in the
League 2 26 and 11 overall The Citadel
is 0 and9 in their own league and they
hosted this game in
Charleston and nearly found a way to
pull it
off pretty crazy right when you look up
it’s a 32 game in the seventh and then
South Carolina gets a run so little
anwers it’s a it’s a one-run game headed
to the eighth and the Gamecocks are able
to hang on
there uh Auburn All Over Georgia Tech in
that first inning they jump on them
Auburn of course very difficult weekend
now 2 and 13 but this Georgia Georgia
Tech Team some people expected them to
be good they’re kind of middle of the
road right now seven and eight in the
ACC Auburn really frustrating but
offensively they have a chance to be
good even though with you know two wins
in the league they put up eight in the
opening inning and then Georgia Tech
rallies back to make it an 87 game in
the
fourth nobody scores in the fifth and
then Auburn cash is in to here gets
three more runs a little more room to
breathe and ultimately win the game 12
to8 but a lot of runs scored in this
ball game and again it’s just amazing to
me that Auburn doesn’t have better
pitching it really really is LSU and New
Orleans that was a game for a while too
un know jumps on LSU and Alex Box two
runs in the first it’s a 2-1 ball game
headed to the third and the privateers
score again make it a 3-1 game and then
they get a big triple there in the
fourth that will shoot us to score run
and pull to within one and from there it
was all tigers they win six to3
the cello team obviously not as good and
I would venture to say
probably probably a little more talented
than what we saw from Old Miss last year
at Mississippi State in
2022 but that pitching staff is not good
despite what everybody’s portal rankings
told you and here’s the thing I want to
say about this and I know I have some
elsu friends listen to this show from
time to time when I talk college
baseball listen
UCLA
historically has had one of the the best
pitching staffs in the country right I
mean that I think is that a fair
assessment I mean with their recruiting
footprint if there are guys in
California that typically elect to go to
college and play out in California they
typically go to UCLA and Pitch they’re
USC but typically It’s
UCLA occasionally the guy go to Oregon
State but if you see La want a pitcher I
don’t want him
either you understand what I’m saying
and so back to back years LSU goes and
gets a pitcher off the UCLA Brewing
scrap peap of college
baseball and they’re like hey you know
they got that you heard and then
everybody’s like well yeah he had better
numbers but his back was hurt well then
he has a terrible year he finds a little
something in Omaha and they don’t win
the naal championship without him you
the benefit of that big ballpark gives a
lot of pitchers
confidence and then they go get Gage
jump and everybody’s like oh look at
this guys this LSU pitching staff is a
mess and don’t you think Luke Holman is
thinking you know what I probably should
have gone to start
can you imagine we would probably be a
top 10 team right now if Luke Heman was
here so it wasn’t a good decision for
him and it wasn’t a good decision for us
and looking like I you spent a bunch of
money that they’re not going to reap the
benefits from because outside of Luke
Coleman they don’t really have any
weaken pitching it’s a tough deal man
Missouri Missouri
State uh Missouri wins that game uh to
advance their record to
1721 Missouri comes out gets four runs
early makes it a 5 nothing game in the
fourth and the Missouri State finals
gets on the board and Missouri Cru is 6
to2 that’s team is starting to play a
little more confidence and all of a
sudden you can’t really assume the fact
that we’re going to sweep that series
Florida probably thought the same thing
but it’s weird having to go and play in
Columbia just it’s just a different deal
and then in an night cap it was on ESPN
to they’ll play that was game one of a
two game series between Arkansas and
Texas Tech and Texas Tech is just kind
of in middle of the pack in the Big 12
this year they go into faval and win
that ball game 9 to8 and they had to
hang on there because uh Arkansas with
one in the eight one nth time rent the
plate and uh Texas Tech closes it out so
98 winners against number two Arkansas
so uh and and to update that game by the
time you listen to this show the game is
probably final but Texas Tech is leading
that game again today how about that
wouldn’t that be something if the Red
Raiders go into Ville and take two and
yes it’s midweek pitching I get that but
it’s not midweek hitting right the same
players uh P hit on the weekend hit in
midweek so there you go that’s your
recap of midweek baseball in the SEC and
real quickly we’ll kind of look ahead uh
just because of the fact that uh we’ve
got a series or two uh opening tomorrow
let’s if I can get the SEC website to
work here it’s always so interesting
it’s just when you think you’ve got it
figured out you don’t they change
something or more to the point they
don’t fix something but yeah we so we
have uh our Thursday
series we’re going to have Texas A&M in
Tuscaloosa right what do you expect
there I expect they them to go in there
and run and and run that and then
Florida is at Vanderbilt that’ll that
could be an interesting series from a
pitching standpoint uh but uh that park
at vanderbild is um is kind of build for
offense especially for right-handed
hitters it’ll be interesting to see what
happens with the Florida lineup we we
throw we would love for Florida go win
that series I just don’t have any
confidence that they will so if you’re
looking for college baseball uh tomorrow
night
you’ll have an opportunity to uh check
check out a couple of games again A&M
and Alabama and then Florida and
Vanderbilt and of course uh Alabama
future Bulldog opponent so you can do
your Advanced scouting and be the most
knowledgeable of your friends at the
water cooler right all right time for

right we continue our journey into
sound the feedback on this Series has
been great we may do some other stuff
like this in the future uh but uh yeah
feedback has been great great and thank
you guys so much for your opinions
because I I I can’t disagree right it’s
one thing like if I’m sitting here
talking about Molly Crew we might come
to blows right but something like this
as difficult as it is to put these lists
together and uh sometimes I pick a band
cuz I want to talk about that band but
um yeah it’s been great the’ 70s were
great and uh it’s interesting too to to
get the feedback from different
Generations on these lists because at
times there’s some overlap that’s the
thing about like rock music there’s a
lot of rock music out there that uh you
know
Generations share a love and
appreciation for so today our fifth of
six installments into the journey into
sound it’s the 2000s
I guess we could I guess we could extend
it and do like the 2020 so far but uh
it’d be tough to get uh you know what
I’m saying change format so we’ll see
but we’re going to do rock songs the
best rock song of the year for the 2000s
that’s 2000 through
2009 now I’m going to start music was
changing and listen this was of all the
list I’ve done so far this was the
easiest without a doubt the easiest and
part of that is because a lot of the
rock music in the early 2000s was
terrible yes it was and listen I’m
looking right at you Jimmy e Jimmy eator
fans I’m looking right at you big
daddy you know I I get the pet band
plays the middle and everybody gets
excited and some people like oh the the
whole album is great you know you’re
entitled to your opinion and I hate to
sound like a music
snob but it’s not it’s not my friend
Bill Martin used to be had of media
relations here at Mississippi State now
media relations at the University of
Tennessee love Bill love bill um love
Ali Martin even more and they have a
child together too so bill is now like
number three on my list of favorite
Martins uh but all that said bill was a
big uh Jimmy World guy which is weird to
me it it really is it’s weird to me and
Bill Martin a rocker too you wouldn’t
know it but Bill used to go to all these
shows at div vary at Baton Rouge when he
was at
LSU absolutely absolutely he seen it all
and uh sometimes I’ll hear a cool song
and I’ll send it to him and when Bill
was here at Mississippi State I would
send him a song he goes you know we
ought to use that as a promo like for
football you know back before they got
serious about enforcing copyright law on
Twitter but yeah I love Bill Martin I do
I absolutely love Bill Martin and um
with all that time I spent Knoxville
when Dan was travel nursing you know I
had a chance to kind of interact with
him a good bit but uh bill is our guy
man love Bill and so anytime I see Jimmy
Eat World I think of Bill Martin and him
trying to tell me how great that album
was but anyway I digress so let’s start
with
2000 when this song Hit the
airwaves it changed a lot it was really
the Gateway track for many people into
this band that is really in many
respects become iconic 25 years
later these guys are still jamming man
still playing Arenas uh still writing
big hits they a number one earlier this
year would leave a light on I’m talking
about P roach Papa roach’s Last Resort
cut my life into pieces this is my last
resort of course uh Ronnie radkey and
the guys in fallowing Reverse did an
incredible rendition of that song kind
of reimagined it and made it more of a
ballad which made it sound more
desperate and again you look at the
lyrical content you can tell jacobe
shadex was in a bad way and it was
really a song of rage and Rebellion but
it was also a cry for help and Kobe of
course at the time will tell you that he
was dealing with some uh some Demons of
his own when he wrote that song uh but P
roach man and I had a chance to see them
at Scrooge in the coast years ago with
hell storm and shine down and our
friends and paper cut Massacre Joey God
rest your soul my friend Brian Jones was
the guitarist on that
album and uh you know Brian I’ve been
known to go sit in with Brian on
occasion even at Hobe on Main down here
but uh yeah love those guys for sure but
Papa Roach man they’ve written a song
pretty much for every
mood and as they’ve healed you know the
uh the music has gotten a little more
uh optimistic shall we say all right
number uh
2001 a band that really needs no
introduction we did a top 10 list for
them and it absolutely killed and I had
so many people that hit me up and said
Steve I thought you killed the list but
it reminds me of how many great songs
are in this catalog and I I’ll never
forget this I don’t remember who said
sent it to me one of our our Avid
listeners after I did they did the
Lincoln Park list they said I knew where
you were going with number one before
you got there I knew it was going to be
faint well it’s not going to be faint
today even though we could make that
argument we’re going with the the great
in the end from Lincoln Park for our
2001 track and God Rest Chester
Bennington
Soul we couldn’t do early 2000s without
including Nickelback I know many you
like Steve likes Nickelback yes I do I I
do like Nickelback a matter of fact I
think the new material is very good and
uh
Nickelback it’s so weird like for a
while in the early 2000s like social
media kind of changed and like
everything was about like zombies I
guess The Walking Dead had come out and
people were like there’s this and and
all this the love of bacon was all over
Facebook and then all these jokes about
Nickelback and I I didn’t get it then I
don’t get it now it’s like well
Nickelback This guys Nickelback rocked
and they still do and uh recently you
know uh Hardy had a deal with
Nickelback uh they did the Rockstar
thing it’s great Robbie faulcon I talked
about that recently about how great that
was you seen Chad Kroger get up there
and sing with
Hardy cool stuff man we’re going with
too bad for 2002 it’s too bad great
track for sure little percussion on that
okay
2003 could have gone a lot of different
directions here but I tell you this to
me this was one of the easiest decisions
in our journey through the 2000s
I love to rage against a
machine I did I did and it’s like one of
those uh things you know it burned too
bright too fast and it all melted down
very
quickly but then rage against a machine
decided to keep touring without Zac
laoka sound garden was on Hiatus and our
friend Chris Cornell God bless Chris
Cornell Chris Cornell front of the band
they changed the name to Audio
Slave and the first really big hit
coaches was the first single but the
first big hit was like a stone and when
Tom Melo and the profets of Rage of
course they get B real and and Chuck D
and they get out and and they’ll play
some Public Enemy and they’ll play uh
some Cypress Hill they’ll play some rage
stuff again they call it the profits of
Rage but
um the every
show the all right Bulldog fans let’s go
ahead and admit it Mississippi state

another our friends at T are back to get

they have a lighted microphone that is
empty and then the crowd sings the
lyrics to Like It St from Audio Slave if
you don’t know Audio Slave or maybe you
only know the hits let me encourage you
dig into those albums there are three of
them and Tomar says they have more
material that at some point they’ll
release uh because there are some great
great great songs in that Audio Slave
catalog I’ve got a couple Audio Slave uh
album covers tattooed on my on my
leg from
2004 and again this was one of the
easier ones too because there wasn’t a
lot of great rock music this
year we had another super group of
Swords we had Scott won Duff McKagan
Matt sorum and Slash
where Stone Temple Pilots meets Guns and
Roses one of the best songs of the 2000s
and really I would say of this Century
the great track the debut single from
velvet revolvers debut album It’s
Slither and I was looking into some time
ago into getting a um a
Shelby and that was going to be my
license plate that was my hope I said
I’m I’m going to get the Shelby I’m
going to put Slither on license plate
and it’s going to be cool
Ruby’s not ready to retire yet but when
she is maybe maybe we’ll get a Shelby
maybe all right 2005 and you know at
some point we get to this band I
absolutely love this band my oldest
daughter Audrey went with me to see them
in at in Memphis at the FedEx for him
and Dave Gro had the broken leg and he
was on the uh on the throne many of you
were there you didn’t know I was there
but I was and I offered a a security guy
20 bucks to give me a set less he
wouldn’t do it he didn’t take my 20
bucks there so thank thankfully that
didn’t happen but one of my favorite
songs of all time and it’s really a song
of encouragement and empowerment it’s
one of those things listen at some
point there is going to be negativity in
life there are going to be times when
people mistreat you for no good reason
at
all and that’s what the song is about
it’s Best of You by the Foo Fighters I
absolutely love it man and I I would
venture to say like if I had to come up
with like my favorite songs of all time
I would say carry on my wayward son from
Kansas is probably number one but number
two it’s probably best of you from the
Foo Fighters I absolutely love that song
because how many times in my life have I
thought about this somebody’s getting
the best of me so what are you going to
do what are you going to do you’re going
to sit back and take
it n I’m not going to take it I’m gonna
fight
back you know we talk about having the
uh the fight or flight
Instinct I’m just one of those kinds of
people man and I don’t want to get too
deep in the weeds here but uh you know I
I I’ve overcome a lot in life and uh I
have not survived a lot in life I I I
think that when people term you a
survivor in many respects it’s a matter
of luck right I think when you overcome
it it shows that you have a little
gumption in life you know it’s like he
you know he survived drug addiction no I
overcame it because I had to do the work
and other times in my life when people
have wronged me they have I didn’t
survive those situations I overcame them
because I did my work I said you know
what I’m going to work my program here
this has happened it’s been unfair to me
I can’t change it and one of the most
difficult things to do in
life is to turn the other cheek it’s
very very difficult to do I struggle
with that you know I’m in my 50s now and
I struggle even to this day you know
when I was 19 it was different you know
it’s like you know you want to square up
let’s go well you we’re not going to
fight in our 50s as far as you know um
but my point being is that there Comes A
Time in life
whether it be literally or figuratively
you have got to plant your back foot and
just start handing out
Haymakers that’s true it’s the only way
you get respect the world doesn’t
respect the
coward that’s important to
understand and nobody fears the coward
well I remember being a young man my dad
asked me this I’ve never forgotten this
I don’t know where he got it from maybe
it’s his own thing I don’t think so but
it is a it is a truth in life my my dad
asked
me when I first got into management he
goes do you want to be respected or
feared I so well I think I want to be
respected he goes no son you want to be
feared because fear commands a respect
of its own and there is truth in
that if people don’t believe that you
have the ability to hurt them back or to
hold their
accountable they’re never going to
respect you ever
all right 2006 this was the toughest one
right we had a lot of great songs this
year a lot of great
bands but this is an album too that I
think in many respects kind of Changed
music it’s it’s Emo music it is but I
love this band that got back together a
couple years ago I don’t like the new
stuff quite as much but I I do love like
uh you know three cheers for Sweet
Revenge love that
album but it’s Welcome to the Black
Parade by My Chemical Romance that album
is a masterpiece in its entirety from
start to finish you can just get it
started and um you I love the chorus you
know we’ll carry on we’ll carry on you
know and I think about that in life too
that’s another song too it’s about a dad
talking to a son you
know you know when I when I leave you
you know will you will you rise against
them you know there are so many people
in life that never rise against
anything it’s true think about it I mean
how many people like well that’s a
strong person you know sometimes people
are just a glutting for punishment there
are not a lot of Agents for change in
the world and I used to always say I
don’t I don’t understand why more people
don’t work hard and have more ambition
in life and now I’m just kind of
grateful that that’s the case because
there’s less people in the
way as you go down the road of life
don’t run over anybody but stay ahead of
the
traffic
2007 love this band uh I want to thank
my buddy Mark as always uh out at
Rocklahoma few years ago and I’ve seen
this band a handful of times and every
time I see them they deliver saw them in
Brandon with Three Doors Down Here a
couple years
ago we’re talking Seether but when I saw
them at Rocklahoma they closed I think
it was Friday night I think but they
closed out the
show or maybe they were next to last ban
but anyway it was it was it was night
the place is packed and cther came out
there and it was so incredibly good
Jackal played right before them and went
long and then nothing more played so we
had to we had to run over to watch
nothing more at the side stage and then
run back to see Seether and um I
remember uh the lead singer cther says
uh you know I’m from South Africa where
we kill Jackal you know it was pretty
funny but uh we’re going to go with fake
it we’re gonna fake it because you’re
such a hypocrite remember it’s your 07
track you dig it man number eight or
excuse me
2008 one of my favorite bands of all
time and I have drawn so much
inspiration over the years from this
band uh because number one they’re very
positive but uh I had a chance to meet
these guys met them for the first time
in tupo Mississippi of all places uh you
were probably at that show save and
abble opened and then we got about an
hour of shine
down and uh I’m trying to think who else
is with them and then we had Buck Cherry
but uh it was a phenomenal show oh aveng
sfold how could I forget we met the Rev
incredible met him Shadows it was nuts
but uh shine down one of my favorite
bands of all time and uh I remember the
very first time I heard this song I said
that’s going to be a hit uh so I was in
love with the Shine Down catalog from
the beginning so I’ve got I share with
you guys before my dad was really sick
down of cancer I discovered the song
Burning Bright by shine down and uh it
just kind of scratched me where I itched
I listened to it on repeat until I got
to my dad’s bedside and uh I still in
sometimes the day when I put that on I’m
kind of hesitant to put it on you know
some days St you’re in a good mood and
it’s like I I really don’t want cuz you
know music is the best time machine in
the world right you listen to that song
it kind of takes me back to some sad
times in my life but um but I remember
being able to sing that song with with
you all with 10,000 of us and uh singing
burning bright together but um when The
Sound of Madness came out of course the
lead single was a devour but when I went
out bought the album the first day it
was out and uh many of you have the
shine down I have I have both versions
of this because I’m I’m a bit of a nerd
when it comes to music so the original
like the limited edition Shine Down
Sound of Madness album actually had a
black cover and the uh the birds were
white and then the the album cover that
you know is white with the black birds
and I actually have uh a
tattoo that is kind of inspired by that
album cover but the very first time I
heard it through on the way home from
buying the CD I heard second chance for
the first time and I said that’s going
to be a hit because everybody in the
world can relate to that everybody in
the world and uh it is such a song of
encouragement and empowerment and that’s
one of the things I love about Shan down
and
listen I love every album some more than
others I love the stuff with Nick Perry
probably the most Jason Todd to
incredible guitar players and uh it’s
just been Zack Meers the last few albums
but um the song’s Second Chance uh a
friend of mine made a joke about that he
was uh he was a guy that had been in
some unhealthy relation relationships
and um and he said that um he was going
to counseling for
codependency and he goes you know that
that song is the that’s the codependent
theme song I like what do you mean he
goes you know sometimes goodbye is a
second chance you know I was like well I
guess so you know um but the reality of
it is is like there’s so much of that
song that I think speaks to people
because of the
fact sometimes you have to let people
go you you you have to kind of move on
and I I’ve dealt with some of that in my
personal life in the last few years you
know people that you think would always
be there and think that you could always
turn to and people that would always
have your back and you find out that
they
don’t and you say you know what this
relationship is uh this friendship or
whatever is is more detrimental to me in
my mental health and my my feelings of
myself and my
life uh than the benefits are you know
and so there’s a lot of psychic vampires
out there you know just trying to suck
the life out of you and you got to be
careful of that and so I think that’s
one of the things about this like the
lyrics about you know tell my mother my
father that I’ve done the best I can to
make them realize this is my
life and so there are so many people out
there and I I got people that I deal
with all the time you know in recovery
or or
whatever and uh you had I’ve had some
people share some pretty heavy stuff
with me you know I really have and and I
don’t say that to
um in any way you try to suggest that um
maybe perhaps that
um that’s one of those things that you
look at and say well you know Steve’s
just putting on airs here that that’s
not the case but there are a lot of
people out there they’re really hurting
and one of the reasons that they’re
hurting many much of that pain is kind
of
self-inflicted it’s like this is who I
am this is what I want to do but I’m not
going to do it because it’s inconvenient
for everybody else I don’t want to
inconvenience everybody else I don’t
want to be you know the source of of
their
accountability is really what it bools
down
to and we kind of package that up and
call it unhappiness and um I’ve had some
counsel with somebody you know it’s like
you know the person they love the most
hurt them the
most emotionally spiritually and
physically and this person basically
chose to stay in the relationship
because it was what they felt was the
path of least resistance and I I share
that with you because maybe you’re
dealing with something
today and it goes back and kind of uh
works exactly with this song know
sometimes goodbye as a second chance
saying goodbye to those people may be
the best day of your life it may be the
most empowering moment in your life and
and you know really quickly you know
I’ve shared this with you guys I think
before but when during family week when
I was in P gr way back in
1992 feels like forever and a day ago
right there was this guy kind take a
inventory anyway I I just I just spoke
up and I said you know I respect you but
I don’t like you and my counselor said
and you know what Steve you don’t have
to you don’t have to and all of a sudden
it was like a new world open up to me
it’s like what I what I felt
mattered you know we get to talk about
feelings today and there’s so many
people that think that they should be
immune from ever having their feelings
hurt um I don’t know how many feelings
that I have left but there are people
that attempt to hurt my feelings on a
regular basis they’re just incapable of
doing so and it’s because of the fact
that I know exactly who I am and I’m
living the life that I choose uh rather
than the life that somebody else is laid
out for me and there’s so many people
out there and uh I know that I’m
preaching now and but I’m not going to
passor around off and play give make
your donation to the Bulldog initiative
but um you know I share that with you
because I think it’s important to
understand that um there are so many
people out there that are hurting today
and um it’s it’s incredible to think
that you would live your whole life your
entire
life for somebody else right and so
nowadays it’s like when we get our
feelings hurt and sometimes we wear our
feelings on Our Sleeve because it
validates us as people it makes us feel
like we matter well this person said
something is so hurtful and my feelings
are hurt you know what life sucks get a
helmet it’s as simple as that to quote
Denis
Larry people are going to upset you that
is a part of the human
condition but to stay in a situation or
to stay in a relationship or a
friendship or a professional
relationship that is making you feel
unfulfilled may be the most sad
existence I can possibly imagine I’ve
heard before in the rooms that the the
most expensive thing in life is to live
a life of
regret that is something that I I just
simply find
unbelievable all right closing not our
decade 2009 another band uh that that
kind of tells it like it is and I had a
bunch of hits too I’ve seen these guys
half a dozen times and uh every time I
do I walk away say man this guys are
great it’s Breaking Benjamin and I know
the homie
Fred you guys know uh no Fred Fred is
the uh the concierge at the clown Hotel
so he’s checking in clown boys uh you
know left and right man Fred’s great
I’ve had a chance to go um to go see
those guys a few times and uh you never
know you never know when uh I might jump
up on stage with uh with Fred and those
guys you you never know I introduced
them when they played at Martins last
time but you never know when uh Fred and
I may just decide you know what let’s go
U let’s go do this together I I I dig
Storage 24 and uh when you get a chance
to get out and go see those guys play
you certainly should but uh yeah Fred is
a great bulldog and uh in their first
video he wore in Mississippi State
jersey and uh appreciate him and uh
listen support live music whenever you
can but Fred is a huge break and
Benjamin fan huge huge break and
Benjamin fan and Fred if you’re
listening and there’s a good chance that
you are I I think what we should do is
uh let’s do a rocked out version
of a band that didn’t make our list
today but had some hits let’s do a
rocked out version of everything’s inen
from Bush I’ll sing vocals and you can
do make we’ll create a wrap and we’ll do
a wrap part we’ll rock it out and we’ll
release as a single and uh we’ll set the
world on fire with that but uh yeah
break and Benjamin man every time I see
those guys it’s a phenomenal experience
and again we’re going to go with a song
of empowerment it’s I Will Not Bow I
will not break I absolutely love that
song Sometimes when I’m feeling down a
little bit I put on shine down at
Breaking Benjamin and maybe some Three
Days Grace it did make our list and I
want to give a shout out to both them
and the Red Hot Chili Peppers who were
both very hot in the 2000s uh this
didn’t quite make our list but um bre
and Benjamin one of those bands that uh
you can find a
song that absolutely fits your mood and
uh absolutely love those guys B glad
they’re back and making good music you
know Benjamin left for a while dealing
with some social anxiety issues and
while he was away a couple of band
members uh basically went behind his
back and signed a contract to release
the greatest hits album that they all
profited from and uh as soon as he got
healthy again he fired everybody
involved and all that and started
turning out new music and uh the next
album debuted number one so that’s your
2000’s rock list today again my song of
the year from each year of the 2000s and
we’ll come back on Friday we’ll do 2010s
and you never know you never know who
could show up in the 2010s you just
never know what direction we’re going to
go but I tell you this list I had so
many people that have said Steve I’ve
absolutely loved these lists I’ve
downloaded them from Spotify and I’ve
enjoyed them as I’ve traveled or I’ve
worked uh so again thanks as always for
your support of the top 10 list and I
would encourage you too as always if if
you don’t already do it follow Roy Sante
on Twitter he’s not going to Tweet out
pictures of his food or anything like
that uh but that way our list will be
easily accessible to you and if you’re a
Spotify listener you can find Roy on
Twitter and on Spotify at dogmatic 67
that’s D AWG m a i
c67 and just subscribe
and then those lists will show up for
you and uh listen we’ll keep you a
breast of new music and uh some old
favorites right here on the top 10 list
but thanks as always for your support
and uh I’m I’m not going to apologize
for that I got a little longwind there a
couple times but uh maybe perhaps
somebody out there that’s you don’t know
needed to hear that today but we We are
the champions of our own life as simple
as that and and uh probably the most
profound thing that I can ever tell you
is uh when you are in the wilderness of
despair
and at some point you will be there if
you haven’t been already or perhaps
you’re there now let me remind you of
this because the people around you may
not tell you the truth because they love
you right and uh sometimes they’re
co-conspirators in your demise because
they enable You by not telling you the
truth let me tell you 100% unadulterated
truth right
now there is no search party being
assembled to come rescue you get up walk

I um I’ve got some concerns about what’s
happening too and a lot of us just
because we don’t know right I mean
there’s been a lot of change in the
staff a lot of change in the roster a
lot has
changed since we last played a game in
the
wbit now let me share with you my
thoughts about this number one I believe
in s pel i i do I know people like hey
what’s going on up there I don’t
understand Sam purcel has had to make
some difficult decisions some other
people around Sam have had to make some
difficult decisions of their own now I
share that because a lot of times people
think everybody leaves us sometimes we
leave them right and that’s important to
understand I’m not going to get out here
and you know put all the business out
there in the world but uh you know
sometimes people just get other
opportunities that they feel are better
employment opportunities your playing
opportunities and they leave and there
are other people that we look at and say
you know what we need to upgrade this
position whether it be on staff or on
the
roster but Sam s has done some big
things here was this season of
disappointment you better believe it but
the thing that I have learned about
sports and life and work is that
everybody has to be pulling in the same
direction towards the same goal it’s
true it is evident to anybody that
watched Mississippi State women’s
basketball at times this year that we
were not all in one Accord and I don’t
mean a
Honda right there was some times this
year that it felt like you know we had
some some people some individuals that
maybe weren’t playing team basketball
and other times we did when we were all
on the same page we were very difficult
to beat but down the stretch it was
evident that there was trouble in the
house of
purcel well that’s being
addressed and that’s not always a tidy
undertaking it doesn’t necessarily mean
that there’s trouble on the horizon it
just simply means that we’ve had to make
some difficult decisions it is Sam
Purcell’s job to do what he feels is
best for Mississippi State women’s
basketball that is what he’s being paid
to do he’s got to go out and
staff his coaching staff with the best
available
coaches he’s got to staff this roster
with the best available
players this is the guy that’s been a
phenomenal recruiter this is a guy that
did a really good job in the portal last
year uh and so I I just share that
because I I think you know you I think
think we owe a little grace to S prel
because because listen you know Vic
Schaefer has made us all
um made us all feel like that um hey we
care about women’s basketball all
right and it’s tough to recapture the
magic at times I mean it truly is and so
it’s important to
understand Vic schaer took us to Heights
that we’ve never seen do I think Sam can
get back there I don’t know
but I do think that we have a good coach
and I do think we have somebody that
cares and uh yeah this time last year I
was a little bit worried that we may
lose him to alurn at this point and
Johnny Harris of course great job this
year for them so you know they’re
probably you know not going to make a
change for a while and so Sam pcel is
here and he deserves our support and the
thing that I think about when all this
chaos is going on is that is when our
coaches and our Administration us the
most it’s easy to kind of climb aboard
the
bandwagon when uh everything is great
right when we’re winning games and you
know you’re you’re blowing people out
you’re getting big time recruits it’s
easy to do that
right but I think s prell means a friend
right now I do and uh I’m not going to
sit here and say that all of this was
unexpected we got tipped off that Gab
blazo was leaving a couple days before
it happen one of the reasons we had a
story ready to go
and of course he had just been promoted
to be associate head coach here and now
he leaves for for Tennessee but you
could see how quickly Sam was able to to
react and uh have a hire in place
because this was not something that was
totally unexpected and I trust that
everybody handles things like
professionals right I mean you don’t
have people that just Blindside you
right I mean you never know who you’re
going to end up working with or at some
point you may need a job right and you
wouldn’t want to just you know snake Sam
pcel and then down the road you go get a
job and and it’s somebody that knows Sam
is like hey this person didn’t handle
things appropriately so you know you
trust that people handle things
professionally but the Optics on it
don’t always look good right we just
announced a promotion for Gabe and now
he’s gone
well when he accepted the
promotion who knew that he was going to
have the opportunity to go to Tennessee
I I don’t think it’s a situation where
he tried to make us look bad now I’ve
seen some social media commentary out
there that kind of leads you to think
that um
you know that’s where we are and uh I I
just want to encourage people to just be
patient take a deep
breath really just kind of take a deep
breath and uh understand that uh you
know Sam purcel is going to be judged on
the product he puts on the on the court
this is a guy that um has been involved
women’s basketball a long time he’s head
coach for the first time so it’s the
first time he’s really encountered
something like this but you may recall
too you know once he first got here we
had to go right to work in the p
portal and uh you know put together a
quality team this time last year you
know we had we had to go to work in the
portal and uh you know some of those
players are now gone and we got plenty
of room to work with uh but you know we
got to get van lith and that’s a thing I
I think about and uh you talked to some
people yesterday about this and
everybody kind of agrees you get her it
kind of becomes u a bit of a uh a
drawing card right Jaa Jordan is back
not really worried about her uh you
never know what’s going to happen but
you know it’s like it feels like the sky
falling you think and and I read this
stuff all the time and I kind of shake
my head uh people like are we even going
to play basketball no we’re not going to
play no we’re just going to we’re going
to disband the program of course we’re
going to play and there’s a reason that
their portal recruiting has become the
the boom that it has it’s because
there’s value in the portal and there’s
a lot of players out there looking for
another
opportunity and so we have proven that
we can win here Sam has proven that he
can win here and has kind of restored
some pride back in our program in many
respects and so let’s just be patient
here and let Sam do what he needs to do
not to mention you’re bringing these new
coaches in they will have new
relationships they will have players
that maybe they have a connection with
that we didn’t previously and so
there’ll be guys out there and ladies
out there in the portal that uh you know
these new staff members will be like you
know hey I know this aaou coach or we
recruited this lady when she was coming
out of high school
and so it’s important to kind of
understand things are rather Dynamic and
continue to
unfold but I’m just going to encourage
you you let’s be good Bulldogs here
okay you know Sam pel’s got enough to
deal with you know without the fan base
out there you know getting on Twitter
you know like we can tweet out a you
know graphic about Golf and next thing
you know I got you people are saying
well at least they’re doing better than
women’s basketball I mean come on let’s
grow up a little bit I mean seriously
seriously
yeah I think a lot about our branding
you know we we always talk about
marketing you know it’s always on
marketing right well they’re the ones
that uh you know kind of push the
Bulldog brand well the
best caretakers of the Bulldog brand are
me and
you and how we carry ourselves and how
we react and what we represent on social
media and listen I get it man there’s so
many times in the middle of a ball game
you’re like oh we stink well don’t tweet
it you know turn to your significant
other and say man we in tonight right
and I I’m the kind of person to listen
I’m I’m a free speech person but I think
you got to consider you know perhaps the
perception or damage you do you know
when you jump into that situation I mean
it’s like you know today and and I hate
to single this person I’m not going to
mention their name but um yeah I wrote a
story on Pico
con and uh rather than you know it’s not
a p would surprise winning peace I’m
going to be wrong but rather than say
yeah this guy can help us down the
stretch it’s like yeah yeah but it was
all
corn
really
really this is a young
man that had his career flashed before
his
eyes and lost all of last
year and he’s now finally rounding in a
good health right when we need him the
most and rather than us be happy
we want to come out and say well it was
just all
corn what does that say about us as a
fan
base and yeah true to point it was just
alorn it’s
true but it’s really not pertinent to
the
story that was an encouraging
performance last night from Pico it
truly was and he deserves our
support as to S pcel and one of the
things that I have learned about
Mississippi State fans over the years
even though that we may all disagree
about some things and that’s perfectly
okay perfectly
okay I don’t think everybody needs to
think and feel like I do or act the way
that I do you may be a good
thing but I will tell you this when when
times when we’re in crisis I I would
never ever ever bet against us and you
know I’ve researched extensively you
know about the uh you know the billbo
purge it was all part of the duty Noble
experience Miss State and led to Billy
Chadwick’s um termination
really and rather
than get
sideways the Mississippi State family
kind of rallied around each other
because that’s what that’s what unites
us right I mean the chances of all of us
getting together in a bar and being able
to agree on uh just about anything is
pretty pretty slim right so you know if
we all got together and decided to have
a drink I’d have a DI Coke and lime you
guys could have an adult beverage if we
talked about anything other than
Mississippi State we probably wouldn’t
be friends by the end of the night but
because we love Mississippi State it’s
easy for us to kind of get behind that
and say you know what I’m going to be a
bulldog and so I just encourage you with
s pcel situation to to remain a bulldog
and remain loyal to Mississippi State uh
you know I’m I’m not a big trust the
coaches type person I know that coaches
always know what they’re looking for and
sometimes things happen that are beyond
their control and things happen that
they’re not
expecting but much of what’s what you’ve
seen happen in the last uh week has been
expected all right last segment of the
show brought to you by the Stark Vegas
Clubhouse if you’re looking to bring a
large group of people to town for a ball
game weekend maybe it’s a work rated
trip maybe it’s a station maybe it’s a
girls weekend a guy’s weekend A CP
coup’s weekend maybe it’s a family
weekend maybe you’re just going to take
some time off and say it’d be great to
go to staro when it’s not a ball game
weekend so that I can just kind of enjoy
starle and hit all my favorite
restaurants up hit my favorite favorite
clothing stores up maybe go play some
golf and someone take some vacation time
and we’re just going to go rent the
Stark Vegas Clubhouse and everybody’s
going to come
hang I’m giving you some ideas here how
to spend your free time rather than just
sit around the house and watch Netflix
once you come to starville spend some
time spend some money have a good time
bring everybody here and uh rather than
go out and waste your money getting five
hotel rooms have everybody stay under
one roof right so that way you’re not
having to track everybody down Hey
where’s bill you know I don’t know he
went to the room where is he now I don’t
know you know it’s crazy but everybody’s
there together you can have your private
quarters but also have some common areas
where you can sit and eat full service
kitchen there so you can run down to the
store you can stock that kitchen up you
can cook all
week you can uh use that wet bar use
that great that patio I mean that back
porch is incredible and of course the
fire pit area out there I’m telling you
when you go think about sitting out
there on that back porch as it’s you
know it’s great temperatures these days
you sit out there and just kind of watch
the sunset with the people you love the
most get up in the morning and Grandma’s
already made the cinnamon rolls for
everybody you know that’s a joy in her
life to be able to do that to take care
of her family you know mom never
graduates she’s always taking care of
the
kids so give her the chance to do that
let’s get Mom and Dad up here they can
have the master bedroom downstairs and
everybody else can get upstairs and stay
up late and chat and catch up
whatever and just have everybody
together there’s nothing better than
togetherness and so rather than hey
we’re I going to take a trip and then so
and so’s going to stay in maon and so
and so is going to stay here they BNB
there or whatever and they’re out West
Point let everybody just stay
together Google the Stark Vegas
Clubhouse while you’re there you’ll see
their Facebook page populate up and you
can uh go peruse the uh pictures of the
great amenities that are available to
you there’s also going to have some
booking options you can book through
Airbnb or vbo but if you book to the
Evolve website you code
bsr1 save 10% off your stay if you book
through the other other networks you may
be great but I can save you some money
by going through the evolved website
you’re going to stay at the same place
you might as well save a few coins while
you’re at it again that’s promo code
bsr1 through the evolved website Stark
Vegas Clubhouse all right you may have
heard there is some NCA Transfer News
out there and a lot of people are kind
of confused what does it all mean I’m
going to do my best to explain it to you
it’s not official yet but we expect it
to be later in the week when the D1
council votes on it but basically
unlimited transfers is coming and uh I
don’t like it I I don’t uh especially
when you couple it with nil because
basically you’re going to it’s going to
even lead to even more widespread
poaching it’s true and I read the
comments out there people are like I’m
about done with college sports and you
know I think to
myself you know we deal with this in Pro
Sports all the time you know people
leave and don’t renew contracts or
whatever people get traded uh I never
thought we’d see that in college sports
but kind of here we are right uh so now
basically if you’re in good academic
standing you can transfer it used to be
a one-time transfer exception which I
thought was good enough but now they’ve
opened it up you can basically transfer
every year you don’t have to be a grad
transfer in order to uh earn immediate
eligibility if you’ve exhausted your
one-time transfer and a lot of this is
just getting ahead litigation there’s
already some cases out there that are
pending and we all know how that’s going
to go you know say hey it’s a it’s a
free market society and uh you know
people should be able to kind of go
because like if you as a student like if
you wanted to uh spend a year at
Southern Miss and then transfer to
Mississippi State and then you change
your major whatever then you transfer to
I don’t know you know University of
California elag gundo you can do that
and kind of the argument against it is
that you know hey if you’re a student
athlete you don’t have the same freedom
of movement as regular students do and
there’s some truth in that it’s true now
regular students by and large are paying
for their education and many of our
student athletes are not and so that was
always kind of the rub it’s like if
we’re paying the freight here then they
should remain with us um but a lot of
people said you know what the old system
is Antiquated and that’s kind of where
you are but um you know I’m not sure how
it’s going to impact College athletics I
can’t sit here and say it’s necessarily
a good thing for College athletics it
may be a great thing for the student
athlete and I’ve always been one to
advocate cap for the student athlete but
I really believe what is happening now
is that we are
overcorrecting it’s like the old
expression you give people an inch than
they think they’re a
ruler that’s kind of where we are with
this it’s like okay we want NL
compensation okay let’s do that all
right we want immediate eligibility
should we transfer okay let’s do that
all right well that’s not enough well
now we want to be able to transfer every
year and cash in NL dollars every single
year and put ourselves out on an open
market and basically as a meat market
and see what I can get and so that’s
really the concern for me is that um and
I I tell you this I had I had lunch
today a late
lunch and I visited with a couple young
a couple young men they’re not young
they’re much older than me but um one of
I’m is a big steers fan and I walk up
and he goes hey Steve I hey I love the
hat you know I’m a steers fan too so we
sat there and visited as I polished off
some barbecue chicken and um we talked a
little a little bit about how things
have changed you know as far as loyalty
goes and not just with players but with
coaches and it appears at this point the
only people that are loyal to
institutions or the fans
themselves and so we’re having to kind
of navigate through this thing too and
we have no say or control in it other
than the fact that uh you know we give
some money to the Bulldog initiative
right to kind of Aid in their efforts
and I’m always going to encourage you to
do that but it’s so interesting when I
look back in hindsight it’s like look
look how much has changed in 5 years you
know it’s so interesting some people say
well you know what was legal 5 years ago
uh you know what was illegal back then
is legal now there’s still some some
things that have to happen obviously but
um I think it’s important to understand
why we may not Embrace or support the
change change is happening nonetheless
and so we really have no choice but to
accept it because you and I are not
decision makers I mean we may be opinion
makers but we’re not decision makers and
that’s important to understand and so my
loyalty is always going to beat to
Mississippi State and uh it is evident
at this point that um you know basically
free agency is now here in college
athletics and every time that something
happens some people say draw a line in
the say okay well this is as far as
we’re going to go you know what’s next
you know what could happen next you know
I don’t know but I I still think well
eventually we’re going to have a
collective bargaining agreement I think
that student athletes will unionize and
they’ll be compensated as part of the TV
package because I think we’re going to
look back five years from now and say
can you believe we all used to give
money to a collective to get players you
know I think that’s something that uh
will eventually go
away I think that’s probably a good
thing too to be quite honest with you
and it is interesting that many coaches
around the country that uh basically had
a good system in place to uh to deliver
dark money to athletes and things of
that nature that have decided you know
what this isn’t fair because now it’s a
Level Playing Field in many respects
where you can legally give money to
players
but uh yeah does it change how I feel
about certain things yeah you better
believe it you do and it’s so
interesting to me too when I think
about the people that are getting the
most are the ones that never stop
wanting you hear what I’m saying do you
hear about controversy in softball when
it comes to transfers and nil no you
don’t do you hear about it in baseball
or golf no it’s the full scholarship
Sports and you said but Steve that’s
because that’s where most of the demand
is and I get that too but it’s
interesting you we first started talking
about nil compensation one of the things
that I said is you know we need to clean
up scholarship and Equity first and
don’t think that there’s not an imprison
young lawyer or two out there that
hadn’t considered
that because if you have two people that
are similarly situated and one is
treated than the other then there’s the
form of discrimination and so you can
say you know what well my son excelled
in football and he got a full
scholarship well my son excelled in
baseball and he had to get student loans
to pay his way through school if you
don’t
see the basis for a lawsuit there
against the NCAA cuz they’re the ones
that set the
rules you’re kidding yourself and don’t
think that’s not coming at some point
that’s going to and that’s Pro that
probably should have happened before nil
or this transfer stuff to be honest with
you uh that’s that’s coming just get
ready for it is as sure as I’m sitting
here that lawsuit is coming and that may
be a good thing because it’s completely
unfair that just because my child excels
in one sport and not another that they
have to pay to play when other people
not only are they getting the you know
the little stien and getting their
education paid for and graduate
debt-free they’re also getting major
niil dollars on top of that and then
your softball players are having to uh
you know graduate sometime $40 $50,000
in debt just wait that’s coming and I
think that’s more important legislation
than what we’ve seen happen The Last 5
Years it’s just my take on it hey if you
had done so go to win thebottom
falls.com you get the latest book win
the bottom Falls and all my sports
titles are there too that’s fln flam
Stark villains alpha dogs and Dogpile we
got plenty of FN flam I say plenty uh we
got we got substantial inventory there
got probably more dog pile than anything
and uh of course you know things are
running out with villains and alpha dogs
so if you want to get those books if you
say I want to complete the comp The
Collection or I bought villains or I
bought alpha dogs and I want to get the
companion book you need to act fast uh
you do and I guess all those titles are
there and uh pretty soon you’ll be able
to pre-order the dude from that same uh
URL we’ll have a you know we’ll do like
the dude book or whatever we’ll figure
that out but all that understood uh some

you in the Pod one time and the Pod kind
of does its thing and you’re like where
has this been all my life people ask me
all the time Steve why do you float well
you may not know it but your good friend
and host deals with a lot of anxiety a
lot of stress in my life I do and I
don’t want to die young I I really don’t
there was a time my life I did I raced
to get out but uh I don’t want to die
young and uh and so there is it’s done
nothing has been better for my anxiety
than floating nothing and I’ve been so
busy as of late I haven’t floated in
about 10 days two weeks I need to get in
there I was going to go today but we had
a lot going on but all that understood I
think it’s something that could help you
and I’m not saying that because I bought
the business I bought the business to
bring this to starville so you could
experience this for yourself because I
think it helps people Dana of course has
been a registered nurse for forever in a
day and uh she wanted to stay in
wellness and she has a heart to help
people and so this was a perfect fit for
us and so we encourage you as always

we always do the same thing you know we
always take Mom out to dinner and buy
her flowers and you know buy her some
new cookware or whatever and we just buy
dad a pack of socks whatever and throw
it to them on our way out the door but
do something special this year and give
them the gift of floating maybe buy one
for yourself too uh you’ll be glad you
did but until next time it’s all live
our lives in a way we make more friends
than enemies and people can see a
difference in the way we live
