well Hideki matama just shot 62 to
become a nine-time winner on the PGA
tour we’re joined by Ken heray your
translator as well Hideki
congratulations how are you able to pull
off this
[Music]
win yeah it’s this win means a lot for
me um you know especially I am the uh
most winning agent player um surpassing
uh KJ Choy so that’s something I can um
you know be proud of uh over the last
two years you’ve dealt with injury it’s
taken you a little bit of time to get
back to this place what does it mean to
you in terms of your game to be able to
have this victory at
Riviera
yeah you know I did struggle with my
injury you know not just my uh injury
I’ve been struggling with my putting too
but you know um I was striking the ball
really good uh putting really good uh
whole week so um hopefully I can keep
that and get another Victory and this
victory was incredibly dramatic and just
how low you were able to go did you
expect to be able to put together this
type of a
performance um you know to be honest I I
shot a really bad t-shot on the first te
so but you know um I was able to play
great uh till the 18th old so I’m really
proud of it so much to be proud of
congratulations
hii so Hideki matama continues to make
history not only did he of course become
the first man from Japan to win a major
he’s now the first male player from
Japan to win the Genesis Invitational he
has become the winningest Asian born
player on the PGA tour Japan just so
proud of him we know the kind of
attention that he gets from his home
country and this is going to be wildly
celebrated I’m sure for you watching
this today what really stood out to you
as to how he was just able to dominate
the field well we heard him in that
press there talk about how he struggled
with his putter if you if you watched
him play today you certainly would not
have realized that he was struggling
with the putter started as early as
number two here excuse me this was a
little chip here
first scrambling was also off the charts
this week Anna around the greens he was
phenomenal um and then on the very next
hole here we go to number two number
three excuse
me and for a guy that’s struggling with
a putter that stroke looks very very
good to me and about 4T in 4T away he
knew that was in the heart of the
[Music]

hall we saw this shot a little bit
easier this was not easy at all once
this gets on the green it goes away from
you very very quick down there and I
mean right at this part of the
tournament this was pressure packed and
handled that absolutely beautifully gets
it within a couple fit of the hole and
coming off the year that he did as well
I mean we hadn’t seen a lot from hii
matama he’s been struggling with injury
we know he had that back injury he had
to withdraw from the BMW champ uh
Championship with neck injury as well
finished 49th in the Felix Cup Standing
so he really was sort of looking for
this boost I mean to do it now this part
of the Season as we’re about to run into
the major championship stretch it is
such an exciting turnaround for Hideki
matama what sort of
a momentum and how will this Propel him
forward this year do you think I I think
that’s the word it’s going to propel him
forward big big time he uh loves the
players he’s he’s performed really well
on that golf course that’s coming up
pretty soon he’s won at austa that’s
coming up pretty soon I think kadek is
going to have a massive year hopefully
he can stay injury free as you mentioned
he’s dealt with a back he’s dealt with a
neck if he can stay healthy throughout
the rest of this year look out for a
massive year and just a final note as
well because I know he was part of your
team in that 2013 International
Presidents Cup team as well just give us
a sense of what Hideki was like I mean
that was over 10 years ago now but what
was he like in the locker room then and
and how much have you sort of seen him
grow in confidence as well oh man I I
love that guy I really do he’s he’s
awesome he uh he is the most genuine
humble Superstar he really is he his
English wasn’t great at the time but he
made a point to incorporate himself with
the guys he was in the middle of
everything dealt a lot with through a
translator his translator was Bob at the
time um but I I really do I love that
guy I had so much fun with him and he
was a he was an awesome
teammate
