let’s look back at one of the greatest
moments in Players Championship history
as we continue our countdown to the
players brought to you by Rolex this
1999 this point in time where David
Deval was as good as tiger he was and
this was just about as tough as this
golf course had ever played it was windy
and the greens were just uh rock hard
David evall shooting overpar on the
weekend and still lifting the trophy
speak to his talent just how tough that
Golf Course
was 50th Anniversary this week yeah I’ve
been coming to the player since 1988 one
of my favorite weeks of the entire year
one of my favorite finishing holes as we
go down the water line here we talked
about the stretch of finishing holes at
Bay Hill but I just love 16 17 and 18 at
the TPC star grass at Stadium Course
just an unbelievable place to watch if
you are a spectator need go back 50
years 1974 Nicholas winning that was
before they got uh to TPC s grass that
didn’t happen until 1982 but a lot of
good memories a lot of great memories
you go back to 1974 matter of fact you
can go to the Wikipedia page of the 1974
The Players Championship as it was
called then uh and you go down and you
start to read the newspaper columns they
had every intention of it be ascending
to become a major championship I think
it has settled into its rightful place
as one of the Premier Events in the
world of course bouncing around from
course to course uh from 74 through 81
and in ‘ 82 found its home at the TPC
Sawgrass in that period from 74 even you
can go back that far I think it is more
than coincidence that nobody has managed
to be uh Su or has managed to
successfully defend in that period uh
the Masters has had two successful
defenses in falo and woods the US opens
had two in strange and Brooks Kea US
Open or the Open Championship Tom Watson
Tiger Woods and padrick Harrington all
three have done it the PGA Championship
Woods did it twice Brooks kka did it
twice nobody has shown up at the TPC Saw
Grass as the defending champion and
successfully uh went on to win to defend
that Championship I think there’s a lot
at play there I think the demands of the
golf course I think the intimidation of
the golf course and I also think it
requires a certain amount of let’s just
say magic because if you take on that
pen as David Deval just did in 1999 and
we’ve seen players do that the odds of
you getting it in that spot year after
year or week after week or day after day
are well let’s just say marginal so you
just have to have everything and then
you just have to have a whisker of good
luck look nobody followed uh more great
players around the PLAYERS Championship
than you did nobody’s ever seen as much
golf Great Golf as you did you were with
Tiger Woods every step of the way and he
did play great golf in 2013 but he also
had a little magic dust sprinkled on
some of those shots coming in uh
especially like on 14 and uh and 17 that
day yeah you know the 14 toll is one of
my favorite par 4S in the entire world
really and I look at TBC sass Stadium of
course and I think it’s kind of too bad
in some ways that 17 Hogs all the
attention it really does because there
are so many good golf holes out there uh
14 being one of them I love the 11th
hole the par five I think it’s just a
brilliantly designed uh par five and
when you think about the history of the
players for 50 years uh you know in the
beginning the players just absolutely
despised that Golf Course now it was
different then if you hit the ball
offline it would Ricochet out into the
uh woods and you get in all kinds of
trouble in those Palmetto bushes but the
players have come to really like it it’s
a tournament that means a lot I’m glad
there’s no more talk about should it be
the fifth major you don’t have to talk
about it it is one of the most important
golf tournaments in the
world

  1. Yay! A weekend golf tournament that we will recognize the name of the winner of the tournament.

  2. I’m so bored with the PGA Tour. There is virtually no way to watch it for free. Sorry, I’m not paying to watch golf. Thats what advertisers are for.

For all of LIVs flaws, it’s at least free to watch.
