Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton have strong Rd. 2 at The Sentry | Golf Central | Golf Channel

golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the new Chrome tour golf ball
from
Callaway nothing quite like it high at
top the Pacific Ocean from the
plantation course at
caloa round two of the centry and the
PGA Tour season opener 2024 going to
look a lot like 2023 with Scotty
sheffler the man to beat and contending
week in and week out Rich ler alongside
brandle damble you’re Sheffer at the par
4 third led the par four scoring average
on the PGA tour in 2023 no surprise with
that kind of ball striking no surprise
also that through two rounds he leads
the par four scoring average right here
almost birdie and half the par fours
that he played this is not a par four
it’s a par five on the scorecard but
essentially when you hit it like these
guys do you got good looks at threes and
from 25 ft away that was the biggest
question mark coming into this year
outside of Tig
was what would Scotty Sheffer do on the
greens he’s looked great thus far
speaking of great how about this shot at
the 14 drivable par 4 left bunker got it
up and down kept this birdie train
moving right along all right so Scotty
sheffler one of six players today to
have shot nine under 64 we had one
yesterday that was saw theala that was
low score on Thursday this was a record
low scoring day at C ala in fact the
lowest single round scoring average in
the 101 rounds that have been played
here at this tournament going back to
1999 it was almost six shots under par
67.4 that’s right it is a par 73 the
score today you can see it it is cherel
Hatton with 11 under 62 and here’s how
he capped off that round brandle at the
part 58th yeah what a way to put the
finishing touches on this round of golf
he only made one one par on the back
nine only one par actually on his last
11 holes he birdied eight he birdied
nine he birdied 10 he birdied 11 he
birdied 12 uh and then at 15 16 17 he
made birdie and then finishing off with
an eagle 32 out 30 and
62 that was a 97f footer you saw the
caddy Fitzpatrick’s caddy rais his arms
yeah that was a touchdown that was like
a long kick off return here’s the always
entertaining Hatton with Todd Lewis
after the
round you said you body wasn’t feeling
great what was going on uh just very
stiff I think the he traveling from
England 25 and a half hours door to door
and my body still um I wouldn’t say I
looked after myself in the December
period maybe that played maybe that
played a part um yeah so body hasn’t
been moving well I’m sure if you’d seen
some uh flight traces of some of my
t-shots should’ be disgusted but um
they’re kind of of going into not too
bad a spot so um yeah managing fairly
well at the moment well it be fun to see
what you do now that you’re loosened up
yeah I mean pray for my body these these
next six weeks because I’m playing next
Honolulu next week and then flying
straight from there to Dubai in Dubai
for six days and then flying back to
Orlando for five days before flying back
to West Coast so I mean I’m a plank of
wood as it is by the end of that trip
it’s going to be brutal did did you work
on your game prior to coming here uh if
you class hitting balls for half an hour
every day in my dad’s studio
for uh what maybe a week and a half in
the buildup to come in here did yeah I
mean I had six weeks off after Ryder cut
played Dubai and then from finishing in
Dubai to coming here I’d played one
round of
golf so
yeah yeah but still equally frustrated
at bad
shots absolutely love the guy I wouldn’t
say I looked after to myself in the
December period we can all relate to
that I uh I remember when I first got on
I guess now it’s called X it was Twitter
uh the first tweet I sent out I I think
you were allowed 120 characters I think
it was something like that anyway I
think the first tweet I sent out was 120
characters sounds like a European Tour
event uh because that’s what you get on
the European tour uh you you get players
like that I think that’s part of why uh
it’s fun to listen to them at the Ryder
Cup as you mentioned earlier today it’s
probably a large part of the success
there um yeah he’s got a horrific temper
uh maybe that does rub a lot of people
the wrong way uh not his peers though
his peers laugh at him uh you know I I
said earlier he kind of reminded me in
my era of Steve PA it was known as the
volcano Dudley Hart was known as the
mini volcano John Cook should certainly
had Volcan eruptions the golf course all
the best guys all the nicest guys and
that’s it’s kind of one of the most in
congruous things in the game of golf is
that some of the guys or most of the
guys with the nicest demeanor are
quickest to get the hottest on the golf
course uh it’s nice guys get nice guys
get peeved when they stub chip shots
another another one was calavia uh he
was like that but uh you know I pull for
uh I don’t know I pull for hat to play
well because I really like him as a
golfer I think he’s extra but you also
don’t mind him missing a shot because
you just don’t know what he’s going to
do next you think they’re going to touch
30 under if the wind doesn’t blow sure
uh yeah sure um you know there’s 62s
flying out there 63s 64s uh I suspect
the wind will blow and uh you know right
now it’s tough you know I’m surprised uh
at how cluttered that leaderboard is on
the on the on the one hand uh but the
fact that there’s really no wind it’s
hard to separate yourself you work some
of the numbers on shuffler with his
putting and what you know if he just
improves a bit what it could do to the
scoring average yeah you you you look at
where he came from uh last year he won
the Varden trophy with the lowest score
and he put it atrociously if he just
picked up and I know this is quite a
turnaround but if he picked up half a
shot round uh so if he finished let’s
say 35th in Strokes gain putting uh
that’d be about what that would be uh
that means his scoring average all
things else being equal I don’t see his
ball striking falling off because he’s
not changing that offl swing his scoring
average might get down might bust 68
which would get him down around where
Tiger Woods was famously in 201 2007 and
and when you’re there you’re winning
you’re winning six seven eight times and
you’re blowing Fields away you uh you
recall high level player I’m talking an
elite player who was able to make a
fairly dramatic Improvement
year-over-year in their putting yeah
there’s one that comes to mind uh and it
really it happened in one week and then
carried on uh in 20 8 Rory marroy missed
the cut at the V bar quickly jettisoned
ironically enough his coach that he
jettisoned was Phil Kenyan who’s Scotty
Sheffer is hired he got rid of Phil
Kenyan went to Brad Faxon they worked on
things Monday Tuesday Wednesday Rory had
the best putting week of his career won
the Arnold Palmer Invitational and in
again improved his putting on the greens
moved up a 100 spots improved it a half
a stroke on the field the next year led
the led the Varden trophy won the
PLAYERS Championship and really hasn’t
looked back and hasn’t struggled with
his putting to to any large extent sense
Uh Kevin kissner is going to debut as a
commentator alongside Dan Hicks NBC at 4
o’clock Eastern on Saturday then over on
Golf Channel at 6 and again on
Sunday beloved guy in the locker room
great sense of humor as sharp as his
wedge game four-time winner not even 40
years old so he’s in touch with the the
current players you made the leap PGA
Tour winner to broadcast Booth uh with
what’s your sense yeah he’s got all the
tools he’s a really likable uh really
likable guy as you just alluded to he’s
witty he’s smart he’s got some nice
credentials uh and uh it just a matter
not whether or not he really wants to do
it you know if he really wants to do it
I don’t have any doubt that he’d be good
at it maybe maybe very good at it it’s a
tough job though what what makes it what
what’s harder than than people might
know at home and look be be clear we’re
not you know shoveling you know 5et of
snow in Buffalo in the dead of winter to
come in right of course but to come in
every single day and talk about the same
subject in a different way and say
something new about it uh you’re talking
about you know you have to keep up with
all of these players but you have to
come in every single day and approach it
in a different way and that it takes a
lot of work to to have something to say
I see it pretty much every day I think
you’re going to do probably 200 Scotty
shuffler breakdowns in
2024 we’ll see you on Saturday three
Eastern for the pregame on golf champ
